돌을 던지면 닿을 만큼 가까이

종교지도자들이 무리를 지어 간음한 여인을 예수님께로 끌고 왔을 때, 그들은 그들이 그 여자를 예수님의 은혜에 돌을 던지면 닿을 듯 가까이 데려가고 있음을 알지 못했습니다. 그들은 예수님을 곤경에 빠트리고 싶어 했습니다. 만약 예수님이 그 여자를 보내주라고 한다면 그들은 예수님이 모세의 율법을 어긴다고 주장할 수 있었고, 또 만약 예수님이 여자를 죽이라고 한다면 그를 따르는 군중들이 예수님의 자비와 은혜의 말씀을 저버릴 것이었습니다.

그러나 예수님은 고소인들의 그 상황을 반전 시키셨습니다. 성경은 예수님이 그들에게아무말씀도안하시고땅에글씨를 쓰기 시작하셨다고 말합니다. 종교지도자들이 계속해서 예수님께 묻자, 주님은 누구든지 죄 없는 사람이 먼저 돌을 던지라고 하시며 땅에 다시 글씨를 쓰기 시작하셨습니다. 주님이 다시 고개를 드셨을 때 고소하던 사람들은 그 자리에 아무도 없었습니다.

죄가 없기에 돌을 던질 수 있는 오직 한 사람이 이제 여인을 보고 자비를 베푸셨습니다. “예수께서 이르시되 나도 너를 정죄하지 아니하노니 가서 다시는 죄를 범하지 말라 하시니라”(요한복음 8:11).

오늘 당신이 다른 사람들을 비판한 것을 용서받아야 한다든지, 또는 하나님의 은혜로 용서 받지 못할 죄가 없다는 것에 대한 확신이 필요하다면, 다음의 말에 용기를 얻으십시오. ‘아무도 돌을 던지지 않으니 지금 가서 하나님의 자비로 변화되어라.’

Within a Stone's Throw

As a group of religious leaders herded an adulterous woman toward Jesus, they couldn’t know they were carrying her within a stone’s throw of grace. Their hope was to dis- credit Him. If He told them to let the woman go, they could claim He was breaking Mosaic law. But if He condemned
her to death, the crowds following Him would have dismissed His words of mercy and grace.

But Jesus turned the tables on the accusers. Scripture says that rather than answering them directly, He started writing on the ground. When the leaders continued to question Him, He invited any of them who had never sinned to throw the first stone, and then He started writing on the ground again. The next time He looked up, all the accusers were gone.

Now the only person who could have thrown a stone—the only sinless one—looked at the woman and gave her mercy. “ ‘Then neither do I condemn you,’ Jesus declared. ‘Go now and leave your life of sin’” (JOHN 8:11).

Whether today finds you needing forgiveness for judging others or desiring assurance that no sin is beyond His grace, be encouraged by this: No one is throwing stones today; go and be changed by God’s mercy. - RANDY KILGORE

오늘 당신을 위해 기도하고 있습니다

난처한상황이나어려운문제에직면할때우리는자주주위에있는 예수 그리스도 안의 형제자매들에게 기도요청을 합니다. 우리를 생각해주는 누군가가 기도로 우리를 하나님께 올려준다는 것을 아는 건 큰 위로가 됩니다. 하지만 만일 당신에게 그런 가까운 그리스도인 친구들이 없다면 어떨까요? 만일 당신이 예수 그리스도의 복음이 거부당하는 곳에 살고 있다면 누가 당신을 위해 기도해 줄까요?

성경에서 위대하고 승리에 찬 장 중의 하나인 로마서 8장은 이렇게 선포합니다. “우리는 마땅히 기도할 바를 알지 못하나 오직성령이말할수없는탄식으로우리를 위하여 친히 간구 하시느니라...... 이는 성령이 하나님의 뜻대로 성도를 위하여 간구 하심이니라”(로마서 8:26-27). 성령님이 오늘 당신을 위해 기도하고 계십니다.

성경은 또 말합니다. “누가 정죄하리요 죽으실 뿐 아니라 다시 살아나신 이는 그리스도 예수시니 그는 하나님 우편에 계신 자요 우리를 위하여 간구하시는 자시니라”(34절). 살아 계신 주 예수 그리스도께서 오늘 당신을 위해 기도하고 계십니다.

기도를 들으시고 당신을 대신하여 일하시는 하나님 아버지께 성령님과 주 예수 그리스도께서 당신의 이름과 필요들을 아뢴다는 사실을 생각해 보십시오!

당신이 어디에 있든지 당신이 처한 상황이 얼마나 혼란 스럽던지, 당신 홀로 인생을 대하고 있는 것이 아닙니다. 성령님과 성자 예수님께서 당신을 위해 오늘 기도하고 계십니다!

Praying For You Today

When we face a perplexing situation or a tough problem, we often ask our brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for us. It’s a great encouragement to know that others who care are holding us up to God in prayer. But what if you don’t have close Christian friends? Perhaps you live where the gospel of Christ is opposed. Who will pray for you?

Romans 8, one of the great, triumphant chapters of the Bible, declares, “We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. . . . The Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God” (ROM. 8:26–27). The Holy Spirit is praying for you today.

In addition, “Christ Jesus who died more than that, who was raised to life is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us” (V. 34). The living Lord Jesus Christ is praying for you today.

Think of it! The Holy Spirit and the Lord Jesus Christ mention your name and your needs to God the Father, who hears and acts on your behalf.

No matter where you are or how confusing your situation, you do not face life alone. The Spirit and the Son are praying for you today! - DAVID MCCASLAND

참된 부유함

친구 아버지의 추모예배에서 누군가가 친구에게 말했습니다. “당신의 아버지를 만나기 전까지 나는 사람이 다른 이들을 도우면서 즐거움을 느낄 수 있다는 것을 알지 못했습니다.” 그 친구의 아버지는 다른 사람들을 돕고, 웃고, 사랑하며, 모르는 사람들과 만나 친구가 되는 일들을 통해 하나님의 나라를 세워나가는데 한 부분을 담당했습니다. 친구 아버지는 돌아가시며 사랑의 유산을 남겼습니다. 그와는 반대로 내 친구의 큰고모는 그녀의 재산을 유산이라 여기고, 인생의 마지막 몇 년을 자신의 가보와 고서들을 누가 지켜낼 수 있을까를 고민하며 보냈습니다.

예수님은 그의 가르침과 비유를 통해 주님을 따르는 자들에게 재물을 쌓아두지 말고 가난한 자들에게 나누어주며, 녹슬거나 썩지 않는 것들을 귀하게 여기라고 경고하셨습니다. 예수님은 “너희 보물 있는 곳에는 너희 마음도 있으리라”(누가복음 12:34)고 하셨습니다.

우리는 우리가 소유한 것들이 삶에 의미를 부여한다고 생각할 수도 있습니다. 하지만 최신기기가 망가지거나 어떤 가치 있는 물건을 잃어버릴 때, 우리는 우리를 만족시키고 영원히 지속하는 것은 오직 우리와 주님과의 관계라는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 시들거나 없어지지 않는 것은 우리의 사랑으로 다른 사람들을 돌보는 일입니다.

우리가 가치 있게 여겨야 할 것이 무엇인지 분명히 볼 수 있고, 우리의 마음이 어디에 있는지 보여주시고, 그 무엇보다도 하나님의 나라를 먼저 구할 수 있도록 도와달라고 주님께 간구합시다(12:31).

True Riches

At the memorial service for my friend’s dad, someone said to her, “Until I met your father, I didn’t know a person could have fun while helping others.” Her dad contributed his part in helping to build the kingdom of God through serving people, laughing and loving, and meeting strangers who became friends. When he died, he left a legacy of love. In contrast, my friend’s aunt—her father’s older sister—viewed her possessions as her legacy, spending her latter years worrying about who would protect her heirlooms and rare books.

In His teaching and by His example, Jesus warned His followers to avoid hoarding possessions, to give to the poor, and to value what will not rust or decay. “For where your treasure is,” Jesus said, “there your heart will be also” (LUKE 12:34).

We might think our things give meaning to our life. But when the latest gadget breaks or we misplace or lose some- thing valuable, we begin to realize that it is our relationship with the Lord that satisfies and endures. It is our love and care for others that does not wither and fade away.

Let’s ask the Lord to help us see clearly what we value, to show us where our heart is, and to help us seek His kingdom above all (12:31). - AMY BOUCHER PYE

영혼을 평온하게

음악회에 참석하고 있는 동안 나는 한 가지 골치 아픈 일로 마음을 온통 빼앗기고 있었습니다. 그러나 감사하게도 아름다운 찬송가의 가사가 나의 깊은 속까지 스며들기 시작하면서 나의 산란한 마음은 곧 끝이 났습니다. 남성 아카펠라 그룹이 “내 영혼아 늘 평안하여라” 라는 찬송을 부르고 있었습니다. 찬송가 가사를 들으면서 하나님만이 주실 수 있는 안식의평화에대해묵상하자내눈에눈물이 고였습니다.

‘주님이 네 곁에 계시니 내 영혼아 늘 평안하여라. 인내로 슬픔과 고통의 십자가를 견디어라. 네 하나님이 명하시고 채우시게 하라. 모든 것이 변해도 신실하신 하나님은 변치 않으시리라.’

예수님이 권능을 가장 많이 행하신 고을들이 회개하지 않음으로 책망하셨을 때에도(마태복음 11:20-24), 주님은 주님께로 나아오는 자들에게 위로의 말씀을 주셨습니다. 예수님은 말씀하셨습니다. “수고하고무거운짐진자들아다내게로오라내가너희를쉬게하리라 나는 마음이 온유하고 겸손하니......내게 배우라 그리하면 너희 마음이 쉼을 얻으리니”(28-29절).

이 말씀은 참으로 놀랍습니다! 예수님은 자신을 거부하는 자들에게 강력하게 말씀하신 직후에, 주님께로 나아오는 자들에게 우리 모두가 갈망하는 평화를 찾을 수 있도록 초대하신 것입니다. 예수님은 우리의 쉼 없이 지친 영혼들을 평온케 하실 수 있는 유일한 분이십니다.

Calming Your Soul

While attending a concert, my mind detoured to a troublesome issue that insisted on my attention. Thankfully, the distraction was short-lived as the words of a beautiful hymn began to reach deep into my being. A men’s a capella group was singing “Be Still, My Soul.” Tears welled up as I listened to the words and contemplated the restful peace that only God can give:

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side! Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain; leave to thy God to order and provide; in every change He faithful will remain.

When Jesus was denouncing the unrepentant towns where He had done most of His miracles (MATT. 11:20–24), He still had words of comfort for those who would come to Him. He said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened . . . . learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (VV. 28–29).

This statement is striking! Immediately following His strong words for those who were rejecting Him, Jesus extended an invitation to all to draw near to Him to find the peace we all yearn for. Jesus is the only one who can calm our restless, weary souls. - JOE STOWELL

중요한 말씀

‘오늘의 양식’ 편집인의 한 사람으로 일을 막 시작했을 때, 나는 매달 표지에 들어갈 성경구절을 정하는 일을 했었습니다. 시간이 좀 흐르자, 나는 이 일이 과연 의미가 있을까 하는 의구심이 들기 시작했습니다.

그로부터 얼마 지나지 않아 한 독자에게서 이런 내용의 편지를 받았습니다. 그녀는 아들을 위해 20년이 넘게 기도를 해왔지만, 아들은 예수님과 상관없이 지내고 싶어 했습니다. 그러던 어느 날 아들이 집에 찾아와서는 우연히 테이블에 놓인 ‘오늘의 양식’ 책자의 표지에 있는 성구를 읽게 되었습니다. 성령께서 그 구절을 사용하여 그를 책망하셨고, 바로 그 순간 그는 예수님께 자신의 삶을 드렸습니다.

그 성구나 그 독자의 이름은 생각나지 않지만, 그날 하나님이 나에게 주셨던 그 선명한 메시지는 결코 잊을 수가 없습니다. 하나님은 거의 일 년 전에 정한 성구를 통해서 그 여인의 기도에 응답해주셨습니다. 시간의 경계를 초월하여, 하나님은 나의 일을 통해 하나님의 말씀 위에 놀랍게 임해주셨던 것입니다.

예수님의 제자 요한은 예수님을 “생명의 말씀”(요한1서 1:1)이라고 불렀습니다. 그리고 그것이 무엇을 의미하는지 모든 사람이 알기를 원했습니다. 그는 예수님에 대해 이렇게 기록하였습니다. “이 영원한 생명을 우리가......증언하여 너희에게 전하노니 이는 아버지와 함께 계시다가 우리에게 나타내신바 된 이시니라 우리가 보고 들은 바를 너희에게도 전함은 너희로 우리와 사귐이 있게 하려 함이니”(2-3절).

Words That Matter

Early in my days of working as an editor for Our Daily Bread, I selected the cover verse for each month’s devotional. After a while, I began to wonder if it made a difference.

Not long after that, a reader wrote and described how she had prayed for her son for more than twenty years, yet he wanted nothing to do with Jesus. Then one day he stopped by to visit her, and he read the verse on the cover of the booklet that sat on her table. The Spirit used those words to convict him, and he gave his life to Jesus at that very moment.

I don’t recall the verse or the woman’s name. But I’ll never forget the clarity of God’s message to me that day. He had chosen to answer a woman’s prayers through a verse selected nearly a year earlier. From a place beyond time, He brought the wonder of His presence to my work and His words.

John the disciple called Jesus “the Word of life” (1 JOHN 1:1). He wanted everyone to know what that meant. “We proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us,” he wrote of Jesus (V. 2). “We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us” (V. 3).

There is nothing magical in putting words on a page. But there is life-changing power in the words of Scripture because they point us to the Word of life—Jesus. - TIM GUSTAFSON

믿음을 전수하라

나는 릴레이 경주를 즐겨 봅니다. 운동선수들이 보여주는 체력, 속도, 기술, 지구력은 정말 대단합니다. 그런데, 특별히 관심을 갖고 불안한 마음으로 경주를 지켜보는 결정적인 순간이 있습니다. 그것은 바로 배턴이 다음 주자에게 넘겨지는 순간입니다. 잠깐 지체되거나 한 번이라도 놓치게 되면 경주에서 질 수 있기 때문입니다.

어떤 의미에서 그리스도인들은 주님과 주님의 말씀을 아는 지식과 믿음의 배턴을 가지고 릴레이 경주를 달리고 있습니다. 성경은 우리가 이 배턴을 계속해서 다음 세대에게 전해야 한다고 말하고 있습니다. 시편 78편에서 아삽은 이렇게 선포합니다. “내가......예로부터 감추어졌던 것을 드러 내려 하니 이는 우리가 들어서 아는 바요 우리의 조상들이 우리에게 전한 바라 우리가......여호와의 영예와 그의 능력과 그가 행하신 기이한 사적을 후대에 전하리로다”(2-4절).

모세도 이스라엘 백성들에게 비슷한 이야기를 했습니다. “네가 눈으로 본 그 일을 잊어버리지 말라 네가 생존하는 날 동안에 그 일들이 네 마음에서 떠나지 않도록 조심하라 너는 그 일들을 네 아들들과 네
손자들에게 알게 하라”(신명기 4:9).

다가올 세대를 위해 우리가 받은 소명은, “[우리를] 어두운데서 불러내어 그의 기이한 빛에 들어가게 하신 이의 아름다운 덕을” (베드로전서 2:9) 전해주기 위해, 사랑과 용기를 가지고 우리가 할 수 있는
무엇이든 하는 것입니다.

Pass It On

I enjoy watching relay races. The physical strength, speed, skill, and endurance required of the athletes amaze me. But one crucial point of the race always gets my special attention and makes me anxious. It is the moment the baton is passed to the next athlete. One moment of delay, one slip, and the race could be lost.

In a sense, Christians are in a relay race, carrying the baton of faith and the knowledge of the Lord and of His Word. And the Bible tells us about our need to pass this baton from one generation to another. In Psalm 78, Asaph declares: “I will utter . . . things from of old—things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us . . . . We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done” (VV. 2–4).

Moses said something similar to the Israelites: “Do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them” (DEUT. 4:9).

For generations to come, we are called to lovingly and courageously do whatever we can to pass along “the praises of him who called [us] out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 PETER 2:9). - LAWRENCE DARMANI

곤고한 자들을 도울 말

아버지가 세상을 떠난 지 며칠 지나지 않아, 서른 살의 씨 에스 루이스는 20여 년 전에 병으로 돌아가신 어머니를 돌보았던 여성으로부터 편지를 받았습니다. 그녀는 아버지를 잃은 슬픔에 위로의 말을 전하며, 혹시 자기를 기억하는지 궁금해 했습니다. 루이스는 답장에 이렇게 썼습니다. “친애하는 데이비슨 간호사님, 기억하냐고요? 물론 기억하지요.”

루이스는 가족들이 힘들 때 그녀가 집에 함께 있었던 것이 형과 아버지는 물론이요 자신에게 얼마나 큰 힘이 되었는지를 회상하였습니다. 그는 그녀의 위로의 말에 감사를 전하며 이렇게 썼습니다. “그때 그 시절을 떠올리니 정말로 큰 위로가 됩니다. 당신이 어머니와 함께 있었던 그때가 어린 저에게 매우 긴 시간으로 느껴졌습니다. 그때 당신은 우리 가족이 되어주셨습니다.”

Words for the Weary

A few days after his father died, 30-year-old C. S. Lewis received a letter from a woman who had cared for his mother during her illness and death more than two decades earlier. The woman offered her sympathy for his loss and wondered if he remembered her. “My dear Nurse Davison,” Lewis replied. “Remember you? I should think I do.”

Lewis recalled how much her presence in their home had meant to him as well as to his brother and father during a difficult time. He thanked her for her words of sympathy and said, “It is really comforting to be taken back to those old days. The time during which you were with my mother seemed very long to a child and you became part of home.”

When we struggle in the circumstances of life, an encouraging word from others can lift our spirits and our eyes to the Lord. The Old Testament prophet Isaiah wrote, “The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary” (50:4). And when we look to the Lord, He offers words of hope and light in the darkness. - DAVID MCCASLAND

예배의 문

세계의 몇몇 대도시들을 방문해보면 브란덴부르크 문(베를린), 자파 문(예루살렘), 그리고 다우닝가의 문(런던)과 같은 유명한 문들을 볼 수 있습니다. 그 문들이 방어 목적이든 기념할 목적이든, 어떤 목적으로 설립되었든지 모두 도시 어떤 지역의 내부와 외부를 구분하는 역할을 하고 있습니다. 어떤 문들은 열려 있고, 어떤 것들은 몇몇 사람들을 제외한 모든 사람에게 닫혀 있습니다.

그러나 하나님의 임재로 향하는 문은 항상 열려 있습니다. 우리에게 친숙한 찬양시인 시편 100편은 이스라엘 사람들이 성전 문을 통해 하나님의 임재로 들어가게 하는 초대장입니다. 시편은 그들에게 “기쁨의 함성을 지르며” 또 “즐겁게 노래하면서 하나님 앞으로 나아오라”고 말하고 있습니다 (1-2절).

기쁨의 함성은 고대에 군주를 맞이할 때 쓰인 적절한 표현 방법이었습니다. 온 세상이 하나님을 즐겁게 찬양하였습니다! 이렇게 기쁨의 소리를 지르는 이유는 하나님께서 그들을 지으시고 그들이 누구인가를 알게 해주셨기 때문이었습니다 (3절). 그들은 하나님의 선하심과 변함없으심, 그리고 영원히 지속되는 변함없는 사랑을 찬양하고 감사하며 그 문을 들어갔습니다(4-5절). 그들이 자신이 누구인가를 잊어버리고 하나님으로부터 멀어졌을 때조차도, 하나님은 신실하시며 여전히 그들을 하나님이 계시는 곳으로 초대하셨습니다.

하나님의 임재로 향하는 문은 여전히 열려 있으면서 우리가 와서 예배하기를 초대하고 있습니다.

The Gates of Worship

When you enter some of the greatest cities in the world, you can encounter famous gates such as the Brandenburg Gate (Berlin), the Jaffa Gate (Jerusalem), and the gates at Downing Street (London). Whether the gates were built for defensive or ceremonial purposes, they all represent the difference between being outside or inside certain areas of the city. Some are open; some are closed to all but a few.

The gates into the presence of God are always open. The familiar song of Psalm 100 is an invitation for the Israelites to enter into the presence of God through the temple gates. They were told to “shout for joy” and “come before him with joyful songs” (VV. 1–2).

Shouting for joy was an appropriate expression when greeting a monarch in the ancient world. All the earth was to sing joyfully about God! The reason for this joyful noise was that God had given them their identity (V. 3). They entered the gates with praise and thanksgiving because of God’s goodness and His steadfast and enduring love which continues through all generations (VV. 4–5). Even when they forgot their identity and wandered away from Him, God remained faithful and still invited them to enter His presence.

불같은 시험

불은 나무에 가장 해로운 적중의 하나이지만 나무에 도움을 주기도 합니다. 전문가들에 의하면 소규모로 자주 발생하는 이른바 “좋은” 불은 나무를 소실시키지는 않으면서 숲의 바닥에 쌓인 나뭇잎들과 나뭇가지들을 청소해줍니다. 그 불은 씨앗들을 자라게 하는데 더 없이 좋은 재를 남깁니다. 놀랍게도, 심하지 않은 불은 나무가 건강하게 자라는데 필요한 것입니다.

마찬가지로, 우리의 영적 건강과 영적 성장을 위해서도 성경에서 불로 묘사된 시험들이 필요합니다(베드로전서 1:7; 4:12). 야고보는 말합니다. “내 형제들아 너희가 여러 가지 시험을 당하거든 온전히 기쁘게 여기라 이는 너희 믿음의 시련이 인내를 만들어내는 줄 너희가 앎이라 인내를 온전히 이루라 이는 너희로 온전하고 구비하여 조금도 부족함이 없게 하려 함이라”(야고보서 1:2-4).

우리는 시련의 시기에 종종 하나님께서 목적하신 바를 깨닫게 됩니다. 그 상황이 우리를 영적으로 성숙하게 하는 데 적합하기 때문입니다. 이렇게 성장하게 되면 우리 삶에 필요한 것이 채워질 뿐 아니라, 예수님이 절대적으로 필요한 이 세상에 우리가 예수님을 더욱 정확하게 드러낼 수 있게 해줍니다.

하나님 아버지의 손 안에서, 우리의 고난은 우리의 유익과 하나님의 영광을 위한 하나님의 목적을 이루어줍니다. 고난은 우리를 주님과 닮아가도록 만듭니다.

Fiery Trials

Fire can be one of the worst enemies of trees. But it can also be helpful. Experts say that small, frequent fires called “cool” fires clean the forest floor of dead leaves and branches but don’t destroy the trees. They leave behind ashes, which are perfect for seeds to grow in. Surprisingly, lowintensity fires are necessary for healthy growth of trees.

Similarly, trials—pictured as fire in the Bible—are necessary for our spiritual health and growth (1 PETER 1:7; 4:12). James wrote, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (JAMES 1:2–4).

It is in the season of trial that God’s purposes are often realized, for there the conditions are right for us to grow into spiritual maturity. This growth not only equips us for living, but it also enables us to more accurately reflect Jesus to a world that desperately needs Him.

In the hands of our Father, our trials can achieve His purposes for our good and for His honor. They can shape us into the likeness of His Son. - BILL CROWDER

점들을 서로 연결하기

1880년대에 프랑스 화가 조르주 쇠라는 점묘법이라는 미술기법을 처음으로 도입했습니다. 그 이름이 의미하듯이 쇠라는 물감을 섞어 붓으로 그리는 대신 색깔 있는 작은 점들을 사용하여 예술 그림을 그렸습니다. 아주 가까이서 보면 그의 작품은 각 점들을 모아놓은 것처럼 보입니다. 그러나 조금 물러서서 보면, 사람의 눈에는 그 점들이 서로 어우러져 밝게 채색된 초상화나 풍경화로 보이게 됩니다.

성경이라는 큰 그림도 이와 비슷합니다. 아주 가까이서 보면 성경의 복잡성 때문에 우리는 화폭 위의 점들을 보고 있는 것 같은 느낌을 받습니다. 성경을 읽을 때 우리는 마치 엠마오로 가던 글로바와 그의 친구처럼 느낄 수 있습니다. 그들은 유월절 기간에 있었던 그 비극적인 “점과 같은” 사건들을 이해할 수 없었습니다. 그들은 예수님이 “이스라엘을 속량할 자”(누가복음 24:21)라고 기대했지만, 주님의 죽음을 목격했을 뿐이었습니다.

갑자기 그들은 모르는 한 사람과 같이 걷게 되었습니다. 그는 그들의 대화에 관심을 보이며, 그들이 오랫동안 기다리던 메시아의 고난과 죽음에 관한 점들을 서로 연결하도록 그들을 도와주었습니다. 나중에 그들과 함께 음식을 드시면서 예수님은 자신을 그들에게 나타내 보이시고, 오셨을 때처럼 신비롭게 그 자리를 떠나셨습니다.

예수님 손의 못 자국 난 흉터가 그들의 주의를 끌었을까요? 우리는 모릅니다. 우리가 아는 것은 성경 말씀과 예수님의 고난에 관한 점들을 서로 연결할 때(27,44절), 우리가 상상할 수 있는 것 이상으로 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님을 우리가 보게 된다는 것입니다.

Connecting the Dots

In the 1880s French artist Georges Seurat introduced an art form known as pointillism. As the name suggests, Seurat used small dots of color, rather than brush strokes of blended pigments, to create an artistic image. Up close, his work looks like groupings of individual dots. Yet as the observer steps back, the human eye blends the dots into brightly colored portraits or landscapes.

The big picture of the Bible is similar. Up close, its complexity can leave us with the impression of dots on a canvas. As we read it, we might feel like Cleopas and his friend on the road to Emmaus. They couldn’t understand the tragic “dotlike” events of the Passover weekend. They had hoped that Jesus “was the one who was going to redeem Israel” (LUKE 24:21), but they had just witnessed His death.

Suddenly a man they did not recognize was walking alongside them. After showing an interest in their conversation, He helped them connect the dots of the suffering and death of their long-awaited Messiah. Later, while eating a meal with them, Jesus let them recognize Him—and then He left as mysteriously as He came.

Was it the scarred dots of the nail wounds in His hands that caught their attention? We don’t know. What we do know is that when we connect the dots of Scripture and Jesus’s suf- fering (VV. 27, 44), we see a God who loves us more than we can imagine. - MART DEHAAN
