공급해주는 세계

마다가스카르의 한 마을에서 해삼 양식을 하는 나디아는 해삼을 채취하기 위해 새벽 2시에 양식장으로 향해야 하지만 아침 일찍 일어나는 것이 힘들지 않습니다. “양식을 하기 전에는 수입이 없어 매우 힘들었어요.” 라고 그녀는 말합니다. 하지만 이제 “바다와 더불어 삶”이라는 뜻을 가진 벨론드리아크 해양 보호 프로그램을 통해 그녀는 수입이 늘어나고 안정이 되어가는 것을 보고 있습니다. 그녀는 이어서 “이 프로젝트가 생겨 하나님께 너무 감사해요.”라고 말합니다.

그 프로젝트는 하나님의 창조물인 해양 생물들이 있었기에 넓은 지역에서 행해질 수 있었습니다. 시편 기자는 이렇게 우리에게 공급해 주시는 하나님을 찬양합니다. “그가 가축을 위한 풀과 사람을 위한 채소를 자라게 하시며” (시편 104:14) 또한 “거기에는......바다가 있고 그 속에는 생물 곧 크고 작은 동물들이 무수하니이다”(25절).

하나님의 경이로운 창조물들도 또한 우리에게 공급해 준다는 사실이 참으로 놀랍습니다. 예를 들어, 하찮은 해삼도 건강한 해양 먹이사슬을 이루는데 도움을 줍니다. 더 나아가 해삼을 적절히 양식하면 나디아와 마을 사람들처럼 먹고 살 수 있는 생활비를 벌 수 있습니다.

하나님의 창조물은 하나도 우연히 만들어진 것이 없습니다. 하나님은 모든 창조물을 그분의 영광과 우리의 유익을 위해 사용하십니다. 그래서 시편 기자는 “내가 평생토록 여호와께 노래하리라”(33절)고 말합니다. 우리도 하나님께서 주시는 모든 것들을 묵상하며 오늘 하나님을 찬양할 수 있습니다.

A WORLD OF PROVISION

It’s 2 a.m. when Nadia, a farmer of sea cucumbers, walks into a roped-off pen in the ocean shallows near her Madagascar village to harvest her “crop.” The early hour doesn’t bother her. “Life was very hard before I started farming,” she says. “I didn’t have any source of income.” Now, as a member of a marine-protection program called Velondriake, meaning “to live with the sea,” Nadia sees her income growing and stabilizing. “We thank God that this project appeared,” she adds.

It appeared in large part because God’s creation provided what their project needs—a natural supply of sea life. In praise of our providing God, the psalmist wrote, “He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate” (PSALM 104:14). As well, “there is the sea . . . teeming with creatures beyond number—living things both large and small” (V. 25).

It’s a wonder, indeed, how God’s wondrous creation also provides for us. The humble sea cucumber, for example, helps form a healthy marine food chain. Careful harvesting of sea cucumbers, in turn, grants Nadia and her neighbors a living wage.

Nothing is random in God’s creation. He uses it all for His glory and our good. Thus, “I will sing to the Lord all my life,” says the psalmist (V. 33). We too can praise Him today as we ponder all that He provides. PATRICIA RAYBON

다시 친구 되어

엄마와 어린 딸이 어느 날 교회에 앉아 있었습니다. 예배 중에 회중들에게 사람들 앞에서 하나님의 용서를 구할 기회가 주어졌습니다. 엄마와 함께 앉아있던 여자 아이는 한 사람씩 앞으로 나갈 때마다 박수를 쳤습니다. 나중에 그 아이의 엄마가 교회 지도자에게 말했습니다. “죄송해요. 회개는 우리를 하나님의 친구로 만들어준다고 딸 아이에게 말해줬더니 딸 아이가 그분들을 모두 응원하고 싶었나 봐요.”

아이에게 알기 쉽게 말해준 어머니의 이 말은 복음을 잘 설명해주고 있습니다. 한때 하나님의 적이었던 우리는 예수님의 죽으심과 부활을 통해 하나님과 화목하게 되었습니다(로마서 5:9-10). 이제 우리는 진정 하나님의 친구입니다. 우리가 하나님과의 관계를 깨뜨렸기 때문에(8절) 그 회복의 과정을 완성하기 위해 우리는 회개해야 합니다. 그래서 그 여자아이의 반응은 너무나 적절했던 것입니다. 단 한 사람이 회개해도 온 천국이 손뼉치며 기뻐하기 때문에 (누가복음 15:10), 그 아이는 자신도 모르게 그 손뼉치는 모습을 따라 한 것입니다.

예수님은 자신의 화목 사역을 비슷하게 말씀하셨습니다. “사람이 친구를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리면 이보다 더 큰 사랑이 없나니”(요한복음 15:13). 우리를 향한 우정에서 나오는 희생으로 말미암아 우리는 이제 주님과 친구가 될 수 있습니다. “이제부터는 너희를 종이라 하지 아니하리니...... 너희를 친구라 하였노니”(15:15).

한때 하나님의 적이었던 우리는 이제 하나님의 친구가 되었습니다. 생각만 해도 벅찬 일이며, 손뼉치며 기뻐할 일입니다.

FRIENDS AGAIN

A mother and her young daughter are sitting in church one day. During the service, opportunity is given for people to publicly receive God’s forgiveness. Every time someone walks forward to do so, the little girl begins to clap. “I’m so sorry,” the mother later tells the church leader. “I explained to my daughter that repentance makes us friends with God again, and she just wanted to cheer for everyone.”

Simplified for a child’s mind, the mother’s words were a good explanation of the gospel. Once God’s enemies, we have been reconciled to Him through Christ’s death and resurrection (ROMANS 5:9–10). Now we’re indeed God’s friends. Since we were the ones to break the friendship (V. 8), repentance is our part in completing the restoration process. And the little girl’s response couldn’t have been more appropriate. Since all heaven claps when just one person repents (LUKE 15:10), she was unknowingly echoing its applause.

Jesus described His reconciling work in similar terms. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (JOHN 15:13). As a result of this sacrificial act of friendship toward us, we can now be friends with Him. “I no longer call you servants . . . . Instead, I have called you friends” (15:15).

Once God’s enemies, we are now God’s friends. It’s an overwhelming thought. And one worth clapping about. SHERIDAN VOYSEY

노래 혁명

혁명을 촉발하는 것은 무엇일까요? 총기? 폭탄? 게릴라전? 1980년대 후반 에스토니아에서는 그것이 노래였습니다. 수십 년 동안 소련의 지배 하에 힘들게 살아온 국민들은 나라를 사랑하는 여러 노래들을 불러 혁명의 기운을 일으켰습니다. 이 노래들로 “노래 혁명”이 탄생하였고, 그 혁명은 1991 년에 에스토니아의 독립을 되찾는데 결정적인 역할을 하였습니다.

한 웹사이트는 그 운동을 이렇게 설명했습니다. “이것은 심한 폭력에 의한 지배를 물리친 비폭력 혁명이었다. 50년간의 소련 지배를 견디는 동안 에스토니아 사람들에게 노래는 언제나 주요한 단합의 힘이 되어 주었다.”

음악은 힘든 시간들을 견디어 나가는데 도움을 주는 중요한 역할을 하기도 합니다. 우리가 시편에 쉽게 공감하는 것도 바로 그 때문이 아닌가 생각됩니다. 시편 기자는 영혼이 어둔 밤을 지날 때 이렇게 노래했습니다. “내 영혼아 네가 어찌하여 낙심하며 어찌하여 내 속에서 불안해하는가 너는 하나님께 소망을 두라 그가 나타나 도우심으로 말미암아 내가 여전히 찬송하리로다”(시편 42:5). 찬양 인도자 아삽이 “하나님이 참으로 이스라엘 중 마음이 정결한 자에게 선을 행하신다”(73:1)고 하면서 자신을 일깨운 것도 깊은 좌절의 시기를 지날 때였습니다.

우리도 힘들 때에는 시편 기자처럼 마음에 노래 혁명을 일으킬 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그런 혁명은 하나님의 위대한 사랑과 신실하심을 신뢰하는 믿음에 힘입어 우리 각 사람을 억압하는 절망과 혼란을 이겨내게 해줍니다.

THE SINGING REVOLUTION

What does it take to ignite a revolution? Guns? Bombs? Guerrilla warfare? In late-1980s Estonia, it took songs. After the people had lived under the burden of Soviet occupation for decades, a movement began with the singing of a series of patriotic songs. These songs birthed the “Singing Revolution,” which played a key role in restoring Estonian independence in 1991.

“This was a non-violent revolution that overthrew a very violent occupation,” says a website describing the movement. “But singing had always been a major unifying force for Estonians while they endured fifty years of Soviet rule.”

Music can also play a significant part in helping us through our own hard times. I wonder if that’s why we so readily identify with the psalms. It was in a dark night of the soul that the psalmist sang, “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God” (PSALM 42:5). It was in a season of deep disillusionment that Asaph, the worship leader, reminded himself, “Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart” (73:1).

In our own challenging times, may we join the psalmists with a singing revolution for our hearts. Such a revolution overwhelms the personal tyranny of despair and confusion with faith-fueled confidence in God’s great love and faithfulness. BILL CROWDER

1938년 9월 21일 정오에 한 젊은 기상학자가 두 개의 전선이 형성돼 허리케인이 뉴잉글랜드를 향해 북상하고 있다고 미국 기상청에 경고해 주었습니다. 하지만 기상청장은 찰스 피어스의 예측을 비웃었습니다. 설마 하니 열대폭풍이 멀리 북부지방까지 강타할 리가 없다고 여겼던 것입니다.

두 시 간이 지 나 ‘ 1938년의 뉴 잉글랜드 허 리케인’이 롱 아일랜드에 상륙했습니다. 오후 네 시에는 태풍이 뉴잉글랜드에 도달하여 배들을 육지로 밀어붙였고 집들은 산산이 부서져 바다로 쓸려갔습니다. 그리고 육백 명 이상의 사람이 죽었습니다. 만약 피해자들이 확실한 자료와 상세한 경로를 바탕으로 한 그 기상학자의 경고를 미리 들었다면 아마 살았을 수도 있었을 것입니다.

THE FORECASTER’S MISTAKE

At noon on September 21, 1938, a young meteorologist warned the U.S. Weather Bureau of two fronts forcing a hurricane northward toward New England. But the chief of forecasting scoffed at Charles Pierce’s prediction. Surely a tropical storm wouldn’t strike so far north.

Two hours later, the 1938 New England Hurricane made landfall on Long Island. By 4:00 p.m. it had reached New England, tossing ships onto land as homes crumbled into the sea. More than six hundred people died. Had the victims received Pierce’s warning—based on solid data and his detailed maps—they likely would have survived.

The concept of knowing whose word to heed has precedent in Scripture. In Jeremiah’s day, God warned His people against false prophets. “Do not listen [to them],” He said. “They fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord” (JEREMIAH 23:16). God said of them, “If they had stood in my council, they would have proclaimed my words to my people” (V. 22).

“False prophets” are still with us. “Experts” dispense advice while ignoring God altogether or twisting His words to suit their purposes. But through His Word and Spirit, God has given us what we need to begin to discern the false from the true. As we gauge everything by the truth of His Word, our own words and lives will increasingly reflect that truth to others. TIM GUSTAFSON

보살핌을 받음

집 청소 서비스 회사를 운영하는 데비는 사업의 성장을 위해 늘 많은 고객들을 찾고 있었습니다. 한번은 한 여성과 통화하다가 “지금 제가 암 치료 중이어서 비용을 감당할 여력이 없네요.”라는 말을 들었습니다. 그때 데비는 “암 치료를 받는 여성은 누구도 소외되어서는 안 된다. 그들에게 무료로 집 청소 서비스를 해주어야겠다.”고 결심했습니다. 그래서 그녀는 2005 년에 청소업체들이 암과 투병하는 여성들에게 청소 서비스를 무료로 해주는 비영리단체를 만들었습니다. 어느 여성 암 환자는 깨끗하게 청소된 자신의 집에 돌아오자 자신감이 솟아나는 것을 느꼈습니다. 그녀는 “그때 처음으로 나는 내가 암을 극복할 수 있다고 정말 믿게 되었습니다.”라고 말했습니다.

우리가 어려움을 만나도 돌봄과 도움을 받고 있다고 느끼면 견뎌낼 수 있습니다. 특히 하나님이 함께 하시고 도와주신다는 것을 알 때 우리 영혼을 살리는 희망이 생기기도 합니다. 시련 중에 있는 많은 사람들이 좋아하는 시편 46편은 이렇게 말합니다. “하나님은 피난처이시요 힘이시니 환난 중에 만날 큰 도움이시라...... 너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다......내가 세계 중에서 높임을 받으리라 만군의 여호와께서 우리와 함께 하시니”(1, 10-11절).

하나님의 약속과 하나님이 우리와 함께 하심을 기억하면 우리의 마음을 새롭게 할 수 있고, 어려운 시기를 지날 때에도 용기와 자신감을 가질 수 있습니다.

BEING CARED FOR

Debbie, the owner of a housecleaning service, was always searching for more clients to build up her business. On one call she talked with a woman whose response was, “I won’t be able to afford that now; I’m undergoing cancer treatment.” Right then Debbie decided that “no woman undergoing cancer treatment would ever be turned away. They would even be offered a free housecleaning service.” So in 2005 she started a nonprofit organization where companies donated their cleaning services to women battling cancer. One such woman felt a rush of confidence when she came home to a clean house. She said, “For the first time, I actually believed I could beat cancer.”

A feeling of being cared for and supported can help sustain us when we’re facing a challenge. An awareness of God’s presence and support can especially bring hope to encourage our spirit. Psalm 46, a favorite of many people going through trials, reminds us: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” and “Be still, and know that I am God; . . . I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord Almighty is with us” (VV. 1, 10–11).

Reminding ourselves of God’s promises and His presence with us can be a means to help renew our hearts and give us the courage and confidence to go through hard times. ANNE CETAS

도울 수 있는 힘

뉴욕시의 한 교회에서 위기관리 직원으로 일하고 있는 조의 8주 간의 “휴식”은 휴가가 아니었습니다. 그에 의하면 이 휴식은 “노숙자들과 다시 살면서 그들처럼 되고, 배고픔, 피곤함, 잊혀짐이 어떤 느낌인지를 기억하기” 위함이었습니다. 조가 처음으로 잠시 거리에서 살았던 경험은 직장도 머무를 곳도 없이 피츠버그에서 이곳으로 왔던 9년 전으로 거슬러 올라갑니다. 그는 13일 동안 거의 먹지도 못하고 잠도 잘 못 자면서 거리에서 지냈습니다. 하나님은 가난한 사람들을 위한 사역을 수십 년 동안 할 수 있도록 그렇게 그를 준비시키셨습니다.

예수님도 이 땅에 오셨을 때 그가 구원하려고 했던 사람들과 같은 경험을 하셨습니다. “자녀들은 혈과 육에 속하였으매 그도 또한 같은 모양으로 혈과 육을 함께 지니심은 죽음을 통하여 죽음의 세력을 잡은 자 곧 마귀를 멸하시며” (히브리서 2:14). 탄생부터 죽음까지 그리스도의 인간으로서의 경험은 죄를 빼고는 하나도 빠뜨린 것이 없었습니다(4:15). 그가 죄를 이기셨기 때문에 우리가 죄의 유혹을 받을 때 우리를 도와주실 수 있습니다.

그리고 예수님은 우리가 세상에서 겪는 문제들을 다시 경험할 필요가 없으십니다. 우리를 구원하시는 분은 언제나 우리와 연결되어 있으며 우리에게 깊은 관심을 갖고 계십니다. 인생에 무슨 일이 일어나든지, 우리의 가장 큰 대적인 마귀로부터 우리를 구원하신 이가(2:14) 도움이 절실히 필요한 때에 우리를 도와주실 준비가 되어 있음을 우리는 확신할 수 있습니다.

ABLE TO HELP

Joe’s eight-week “break” from his job as a crisis care worker at a New York City church was not a vacation. In his words, it was “to live again among the homeless, to become one of them, to remember what hungry, tired, and forgotten feel like.” Joe’s first stint on the streets had come nine years earlier when he arrived from Pittsburgh without a job or a place to stay. For thirteen days he lived on the streets with little food or sleep. That’s how God had prepared him for decades of ministry to needy people.

When Jesus came to earth, He also chose to share the experiences of those He came to save. “Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil” (HEBREWS 2:14). From birth to death, nothing was missing from Christ’s human experience—except sin (4:15). Because He conquered sin, He can help us when we’re tempted to sin.

And Jesus doesn’t need to reacquaint Himself with our earthly cares. The One who saves us remains connected to us and is deeply interested in us. Whatever life brings, we can be assured that the One who rescued us from our greatest foe, the devil (2:14), stands ready to help us in our times of greatest need. ARTHUR JACKSON

예수님을 처음 믿게 된 어떤 사람이 정말 간절한 마음으로 성경을 읽고 싶어 했습니다. 그러나 그는 폭발 사고로 시력과 양손을 이미 잃어버렸습니다. 그는 브라유 점자를 입술로 읽는 한 여성의 이야기를 듣고 자신도 따라해 보았지만 입술의 말초신경마저 손상된 사실만 알게 되었습니다. 나중에 혀의 감각으로 점자를 읽을 수 있다는 사실을 알고 그는 기쁨이 넘쳤습니다! 드디어 성경을 읽고 즐길 수 있는 방법을 찾게 된 것입니다.

예레미야 선지자도 하나님의 말씀을 받았을 때 기쁨과 즐거움을 느꼈습니다. 그는 “내가 주의 말씀을 얻어 먹었사오니 주의 말씀은 내게 기쁨과 내 마음의 즐거움”(예레미야 15:16)이라고 했습니다. 여호와의 말씀을 멸시한 유다 백성들(8:9)과는 달리 예레미야는 말씀 안에서 순종하고 기뻐했습니다. 그러나 그의 순종 때문에 선지자는 자기 백성들에게 거절당하고 부당하게 박해 당하기도 했습니다(15:17).

우리 중에도 이와 비슷한 경험을 한 사람들이 있을 것입니다. 한때는 기쁨으로 성경을 읽었지만 하나님께 순종하는 것 때문에 고난 받고 다른 사람들로부터 거절당하기도 했을 것입니다. 그럴 때에는 우리의 혼란한 상황을 예레미야처럼 하나님께 가지고 나오면 됩니다. 하나님은 예레미야를 처음 선지자로 부르실 때 주셨던 약속을 거듭 말씀하심으로써 그에게 응답하셨습니다 (19-21절; 1:18-19 참조). 하나님은 그분의 백성을 절대 실망시키지 않으신다는 것을 예레미야에게 상기시켜 주셨습니다. 우리도 이 같은 확신을 가질 수 있습니다. 신실하신 하나님은 우리를 결코 버리지 않으십니다.

HUNGRY FOR GOD

A new believer in Jesus was desperate to read the Bible. However, he’d lost his eyesight and both hands in an explosion. When he heard about a woman who read Braille with her lips, he tried to do the same—only to discover that the nerve endings of his lips had also been destroyed. Later, he was filled with joy when he discovered that he could feel the Braille characters with his tongue! He had found a way to read and enjoy the Scriptures.

Joy and delight were the emotions the prophet Jeremiah experienced when he received God’s words. “When your words came, I ate them,” he said, “they were my joy and my heart’s delight” (JEREMIAH 15:16). Unlike the people of Judah who despised His words (8:9), Jeremiah had been obedient and rejoiced in them. His obedience, however, also led to the prophet being rejected by his own people and persecuted unfairly (15:17).

Some of us may have experienced something similar. We once read the Bible with joy, but obedience to God led to suffering and rejection from others. Like Jeremiah, we can bring our confusion to God. He answered Jeremiah by repeating the promise He gave him when He first called him to be a prophet (VV. 19-21; SEE 1:18–19). God reminded him that He never lets His people down. We can have this same confidence too. He’s faithful and will never abandon us. POH FANG CHIA

연민에서 찬양으로

어린이들을 위한 외투 기부 행사에서 신이 난 아이들은 고마워하며 자신이 좋아하는 색깔과 몸에 맞는 옷들을 골랐습니다. 행사를 기획했던 사람은 새 외투 덕분에 아이들은 또래 친구들에게 인정도 받고 겨울학기 동안 출석률도 높아지며 자존감도 얻는다고 말했습니다.

바울 사도 또한 외투가 필요했던 것으로 보입니다. 그는 디모데에게 “내가 드로아 가보의 집에 둔 겉옷을 가지고 오라”(디모데후서 4:13)고 편지했습니다. 차가운 로마 감옥에 갇혀 있던 바울은 온기 뿐 아니라 동역자도 필요했습니다. 그는 로마인 재판관 앞에 섰을 때 “나와 함께 한 자가 하나도 없고 다 나를 버렸다”고 한탄했습니다(16절). 이 위대한 선교사의 아픔이 담긴 솔직한 고백이 우리의 마음을 찌릅니다.

그러나 놀라웠던 그의 사역을 마치며 자신의 결론을 적은 마지막 서신의 끝에 가서 바울의 말은 연민에서 찬양으로 바뀝니다. 그는 “주께서 내 곁에 서”(17절) 계신다고 고백하는데 그의 말 이 우리의 마음을 사 로잡습니다. 바울은 이렇게 분명히 말합니다. “[하나님께서] 내 곁에 계셔서 나에게 힘을 주셨습니다. 그것은 나를 통하여 전도의 말씀이 완전히 전파되게 하시고, 모든 이방 사람이 그것을 들을 수 있게 하시려는 것입니다. 주님께서 나를 사자의 입에서 건져내셨습니다”(17절, 새번역).

위기에 처해서 따뜻하게 해줄 옷이나 도움을 줄 가까운 친구들이 없다면 ‘하나님을 기억하십시오.’ 하나님은 신실하셔서 우리를 소생시키고 돌보며 건져주십니다. 왜 그러실까요? 바로 하나님의 영광과 그의 나라에서의 우리의 목적을 위해서입니다.

FROM PITY TO PRAISE

At a coat drive for children, excited kids searched gratefully for their favorite colors and proper sizes. They also gained self-esteem, an organizer said, with new coats boosting their acceptance by peers and school attendance on winter days.

The apostle Paul seemed to need a coat, as well, when he wrote Timothy, “Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas” (2 TIMOTHY 4:13). Held in a cold Roman prison, Paul needed warmth but also companionship. “No one came to my support, but everyone deserted me,” he lamented, when he faced a Roman judge (V. 16). His words pierce our hearts with the honesty of this great missionary’s pain.

Yet in these final words of Paul’s last recorded letter—his closing thoughts after an astounding ministry—he moves from pity to praise. “But the Lord stood at my side,” he adds (V. 17), and his words rally our hearts. As Paul declared, “[God] gave me strength so that I might preach the Good News in its entirety for all the Gentiles to hear. And he rescued me from certain death” (V. 17 NLT).

If you’re facing a crisis, lacking even the right clothing for warmth or close friends to help, remember God. He’s faithful to revive, provide, and deliver. Why? For His glory and for our purpose in His kingdom. PATRICIA RAYBON

치유의 말

최근 연구에 따르면 의료진의 격려의 말은 환자가 질병에서 더 빨리 회복할 수 있게 한다고 합니다. 연구에 참여한 지원자들에게 가려움을 느끼도록 피부 알레르기 항원에 노출시킨 후 의사로부터 치료될 거라는 장담을 받은 사람들과 그렇지 않은 사람들 사이의 반응을 비교해 보는 간단한 실험을 해보았더니, 의사로부터 격려를 받은 환자들은 그렇지 않은 환자들에 비해 불편함과 가려움이 덜했다고 합니다.

잠언서의 저자는 격려의 말이 얼마나 중요한지를 알고 있었습니다. 그는 “선한 말은......뼈에 양약이 되느니라”(잠언 16:24)고 썼습니다. 말의 긍정적인 효과는 우리의 건강에만 국한되지 않습니다. 우리가 지혜의 가르침에 주의를 기울이면, 우리가 노력할 때 번성할 가능성도 더욱 높아집니다(20절). 또한 격려는 현재 직면하고 있거나 미래에 마주하게 될지도 모를 도전들을 해결해 주기도 합니다.

우리는 왜, 혹은 얼마나 많은 지혜와 격려가 우리 일상 생활에 힘과 치유를 가져오는지 잘 모를 수도 있습니다. 그러나 부모님이나 코치, 동료들의 환호와 지도를 통해 우리는 어려움을 견뎌내고 성공을 향해 나아갈 수 있는 도움을 얻습니다. 마찬가지로 성경은 우리가 시련을 만날 때 격려해 주며, 상상도 못할 상황에서도 견디도록 준비시켜 줍니다. 하나님, 하나님의 지혜로 우리를 강건하게 하시고, 우리의 삶에 두신 사람들에게 “선한 말”로 치유와 소망을 전할 수 있게 하소서.

HEALING WORDS

A recent study has shown that encouraging words from a health-care provider can help patients recuperate faster from their ailments. A simple experiment exposed volunteer study participants to a skin allergen to make them itch and then compared the reactions between those who received assurance from their physician and those who didn’t. Patients who received encouragement from their doctors had less discomfort and itching than their counterparts.

The writer of Proverbs knew how important encouraging words are. “Gracious words” bring “healing to the bones,” he wrote (PROVERBS 16:24). The positive effect of words isn’t limited to our health: when we heed the wisdom of instruction, we’re also more likely to prosper in our efforts (V. 20). So too encouragement buoys us for the challenges we face now and may encounter in the future.

We may not yet fully understand why or even how much wisdom and encouragement bring strength and healing to our daily lives. Yet the cheers and guidance of our parents, coaches, and colleagues seem to help us endure difficulty and steer us toward success. Similarly, the Bible brings us encouragement when we face trials, equipping us to bear up under even the most unthinkable circumstances. Help us, God, to be strengthened by Your wisdom and to, in turn, offer the healing and hope of “gracious words” to those You’ve placed in our lives. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

하나님을 추구함

꿈을 이루기 위한 사람들의 열정과 헌신을 볼 때면 감동이 됩니다. 최근에 내가 아는 어느 젊은 여성은 혼신의 노력 끝에 3년 만에 대학을 졸업했습니다. 어떤 친구는 특별한 자동차를 원하여 그 목표를 이룰 때까지 케이크를 굽고 팔았습니다. 영업사원인 어떤 사람은 매주 100명의 새로운 사람들을 만나기 위해 노력하고 있습니다.

세상적으로 가치가 있는 것을 열심히 추구하는 것이 좋을 수도 있지만, 우리가 추구해야 할 더 중요한 것이 있음을 생각해야 합니다.

다윗 왕은 사막에서 고군분투하며 절망 중에 이렇게 기록하였습니다. “하나님, 주님은 나의 하나님입니다. 내가 주님을 애타게 찾습니다”(시편 63:1, 새번역). 다윗이 하나님께 부르짖자 하나님은 지친 왕에게 가까이 다가오셨습니다. 하나님을 향한 다윗의 깊은 영적 갈증은 그분이 함께 하심으로써만 충족될 수 있었습니다.

다윗 왕은 “성소”에서 하나님을 만나(2절) 생명보다 나은 하나님의 사랑을 경험하며(3절) 매일매일 주를 송축하며 좋은 것으로 배불리 먹는 것 같은 진정한 만족을 그분 안에서 찾았던 것을(4-5절) 기억했습니다. 밤에도 그는 하나님의 위대하심을 깊이 생각하며 하나님의 도우심과 보호하심을 깨달았습니다 (6-7절).

오늘날 성령님은 우리에게 하나님을 전심으로 찾으라고 권하십니다. 하나님께 매달릴 때 하나님은 권능과 사랑으로 우리를 그분의 강한 오른손으로 붙들어 주십니다. 성령님의 인도로 모든 좋은 것을 창조하신 그분께 가까이 나아갈 수 있게 되기를 소원합니다.

SEEKING GOD

It’s inspiring to watch people’s passion and dedication in pursuing their dreams. A young woman I know recently graduated from college in just three years—a task that took total commitment. A friend wanted a particular car, so he worked diligently baking and selling cakes until he reached his goal. Another person who’s in sales seeks to meet one hundred new people every week.

While it can be good to earnestly seek something of earthly value, there’s a more important kind of seeking that we must consider.

In desperation, struggling in a desert, King David wrote, “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you” (PSALM 63:1). As David cried out to Him, God drew close to the weary king. David’s deep spiritual thirst for God could only be satisfied in His presence.

The king remembered meeting with God in His “sanctuary” (V. 2), experiencing His all-conquering love (V. 3), and praising Him day after day—finding true satisfaction in Him that’s not unlike enjoying a full and satisfying meal (VV. 4–5). Even during the night he contemplated God’s greatness, recognizing His help and protection (VV. 6–7).

Today the Holy Spirit convicts us to earnestly seek after God. As we cling to Him, in power and love God holds us up with His strong right hand. By the leading of the Spirit, may we draw close to the Maker of all good things. DAVE BRANON
