다양함의 행진

수십 년 동안 런던은 문화적으로 가장 범세계적인 도시들 중 하나였습니다. 1933년 저널리스트 글린 로버츠는 영국의 위대한 수도 런던에 대해 이렇게 썼습니다. “나는 아직도 런던에서 볼 수 있는 최고의 것은 다양한 사람들, 다양한 색깔들, 다양한 언어들의 행진이라고 생각합니다.” 그 “행진”은 오늘날도 뒤섞인 냄새와 소리, 그리고 한 지구촌의 광경들로 여전히 두드러져 보입니다. 그 다양함이 보여주는 아름다움은 세계에서 가장 위대한 도시들 중의 하나인 런던의 기막힌 매력의 한 부분을 이루고 있습니다.

요한 사도가 하나님 앞에 섰을 때 다양성은 천국 예배의 한 요소였습니다. 구원받은 성도들은 함께 이렇게 노래했습니다. “두루마리를 가지시고 그 인봉을 떼기에 합당하시도다 일찍이 죽임을 당하사 각 족속과 방언과 백성과 나라 가운데에서 사람들을 피로 사서 하나님께 드리시고 그들로 우리 하나님 앞에서 나라와 제사장들을 삼으셨으니 그들이 땅에서 왕 노릇 하리로다” (요한계시록 5:9-10) . 살아 계신 하나님의 자녀가 된 놀라운 사실을 기뻐하며 세상의 여러 그룹의 사람들이 함께 행진하는 천국의 모습을 상상해 보십시오! 예수님을 믿는 신자로서 오늘 그 다양성을 기뻐하는 우리가 될 수 있기를 바랍니다.

A PARADE OF COLORS

For decades, London has been one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. In 1933, journalist Glyn Roberts wrote of England’s great capital, “I still think the parade of peoples and colours and tongues is just about the best thing in London.” That “parade” is still in evidence today with the blended smells, sounds, and sights of a global community. The beauty of diversity is part of the breathtaking appeal of one of the world’s greatest cities. As with any city inhabited by human beings, however, London is not without its problems. Change brings challenges. Cultures sometimes clash. And that is one of the reasons no city built by human hands can compare to the wonder of our eternal home. When the apostle John was transported into the presence of God, diversity was one of the elements of heavenly worship, as the redeemed sang, “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth” (REVELATION 5:9–10) . Imagine heaven: a parade of every people group in the world celebrating the wonder of being children of the living God—together! As believers in Jesus, may we celebrate that diversity today. - BILL CROWDER

하나님을 믿게 되었습니다 (29-34절). 우리가 다른 사람을 대하는 방식에서 우리의 믿음과 가치가 드러납니다. 우리가 해를 끼치는 대신 선한 행동을 취할 때, 다른 사람들이 우리의 행동으로 말미암아 우리가 알고 사랑하는 하나님에 관해 궁금해할 수 있습니다.

NOT TAKING ADVANTAGE

Several inmates were collecting roadside garbage to reduce their jail time when their supervisor, James, collapsed. They rushed to his aid and realized he was having a medical emergency. One inmate borrowed James’ phone to call for help. The sheriff’s depart-ment later thanked the inmates for helping get their supervisor prompt medical attention, especially because they could have instead neglected him—to his great detriment as he was having a stroke—or used the situation to their own advantage to escape. The kindness of the inmates’ actions is not unlike those of Paul and Silas when they were imprisoned. After they’d been stripped, beaten, and thrown into prison, an earthquake struck so violently that it loosed their chains and shook the prison doors off their hinges (ACTS 16:23–26). When the jailer awoke, he naturally assumed the prisoners had fled, so he prepared to take his own life (to preempt what would’ve been his
punishment for their escape). When Paul shouted, “We are all here!” (V. 28) the jailer was so moved by their actions—uncharacteristic of prisoners—that he became curious about the God they worshiped, ultimately coming to believe in Him too (VV. 29–34). The way we treat others reveals what we believe and value. When we choose to do good instead of harm, our actions might just prompt KIRSTEN HOLMBERG them to wonder about the God we know and love. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

새 삶의 어리석은 방식

우리가 직접 경험해보기 전까지는 이해가 되지 않는 일들이 있습니다. 나는 첫 아이를 가졌을 때 출산에 관한 책을 여러 권 읽었고, 진통과 분만에 관한 다른 여자들의 경험담도 많이 들었습니다. 하지만 그 경험이 어떤 것인지 여전히 상상이 되지 않았습니다. 내 몸이 전혀 감당하지 못할 것 같았습니다! 바울은 고린도전서 1장에서 하나님 나라의 자녀로 태어나는 것, 곧 하나님이 그리스도를 통해 주시는 구원은 그것을 경험하지 않은 자들은 똑같이 이해할 수 없다고 기록합니다. 연약함과 패배, 치욕의 죽음을 상징하는 십자가를 통해 구원이 온다고 말하는 것이 “어리석게” 들릴 수도 있습니다. 그러나 이 “어리석음”이 바로 바울이 전한 구원이었습니다! 구원이 그렇게 올 거라고는 어느 누구도 상상하지 못했습니다. 어떤 이들은 구원이 힘 있는 정치지도자나 놀라운 기적을 통해 올 것이라고 생각했습니다. 또 어떤 이들은 자신의 학문적, 또는 철학적인 업적으로 구원을 얻을 줄 알았습니다 (고린도전서 1:22) . 그러나 하나님은 믿는 자들, 그리고 몸소 체험한 자들만이 이해할 수 있는 방식으로 구원을 행하심으로 모든 사람들을 놀라게 하셨습니다. 하나님은 십자가의 죽음이라는 수치스럽고 연약한 것으로 지혜와 능력의 기초를 삼으셨습니다. 하나님은 상상할 수 없는 방식으로 일하십니다. 그분은 세상의 연약하고 미련한 자들을 택하셔서 지혜로운 자들을 부끄럽게 하십니다

THE FOOLISH WAY OF NEW LIFE

Some things just don’t make sense until you experience them. When I was pregnant with my first child, I read multiple books about childbirth and listened to dozens of women tell their stories of labor and delivery. But I still couldn’t really imagine what the experience would be like. What my body was going to do seemed impossible! Paul writes in 1 Corinthians that birth into God’s kingdom, the salvation that God offers us through Christ, seems equally incomprehensible
to those who haven’t experienced it. It sounds like “foolishness” to say that salvation could come through a cross—a death marked by weak-ness, defeat, and humiliation. Yet this “foolishness” was the salvation that Paul preached! It wasn’t what anyone could have imagined it would be like. Some people thought that salvation would come through a strong political leader or a miraculous sign. Others thought that their own academic or philosophical achievements would be their salvation (1 CORINTHIANS 1:22). But God surprised everyone by bringing salvation in a way that would only make sense to those who believed, to those who experienced it. God took something shameful and weak—death on a cross—and made it the foundation of wisdom and power. God does the unimaginable. He chooses the weak and foolish things of the world to shame the wise (V. 27). And His surprising, confounding ways are always the best ways. - AMY PETERSON

실패 속에서의 친구

1939년 11월 27일, 세 명의 보물 사냥꾼이 영화 촬영팀과 함께 남가주에 있는 할리우드 볼 원형극장의 바깥쪽 아스팔트를 팠습니다. 그들은 75년 전에 그곳에 묻혔다고 소문이 난 금, 다이아몬드, 진주로 이루어진 커웽거 패스 보물을 찾고 있었습니다.

A FRIEND IN FAILURE

On November 27, 1939, three treasure hunters accompanied by film crews dug through the asphalt outside of the Hollywood Bowl amphitheater in Southern California. They were looking for the Cahuenga Pass treasure, consisting of gold, diamonds, and pearls rumored to have been buried there seventy-five years earlier. They never found it. After twenty-four days of digging, they struck a boulder and stopped. All they accomplished was a nine-foot-wide, forty-
two-foot-deep hole in the ground. They walked away dejected. To err is human—we all fail sometimes. Scripture tells us that young Mark walked away from Paul and Barnabas on a missionary trip “and had not continued with them in the work.” Because of this, “Paul did not think it wise to take him” on his next trip (ACTS 15:38) , which resulted in a strong disagreement with Barnabas. But in spite of his initial failings, Mark shows up years later in surprising ways. When Paul was lonely and in prison toward the end of his life, he asked for Mark and called him “helpful to me in my ministry” (2 TIMOTHY 4:11) . God even inspired Mark to write the gospel that bears his name. Mark’s life shows us that God won’t leave us to face our errors and failures alone. We have a Friend who’s greater than every mistake. As we follow our Savior, He’ll provide the help and strength we need. - JAMES BANKS

새알과 같은 기도

주방 창문 바로 바깥쪽에 울새 한 마리가 테라스 지붕의 처마 밑에 둥지를 틀었습니다. 새가 지푸라기로 둥지를 만들고 몸을 웅크려 알을 품는 것을 보는 게 참 즐거웠습니다. 매일 아침 그 과정을 지켜보았지만 아무 일도 일어나지 않았습니다. 울새 알은 부화하는데 2주가 걸립니다. 나는 언제나 그렇게 조급한 편입니다. 기다려야 하는 일, 특히 기도할 때는 언제나 긴장을 늦추지 못합니다. 남편과 나는 첫 아이를 입양하기 위해 거의 5년을 기다렸습니다. 수십 년 전, 작가 캐더린 마샬은 “기도는 새알과 같아서 낳자마자 바로 부화하지 않는다.”고 했습니다. 하박국 선지자는 기도하면서 기다림과 씨름했습니다. 하박국은 바벨론이 남유다 왕국을 잔혹하게 학대할 때 하나님이 침묵하시는 것을 보고 좌절하여, “내 파수하는 곳에 서며 성루에 서리라 그가 내게 무엇이라 말씀하실는지
기다리고 바라보리라” (하박국 2:1) 고 했습니다. 그러자 하나님은 하박국에게 “정한 때” (3절) 를 기다리라고 응답하시고, “묵시를 기록하여” 즉시 전파하라고 명하셨습니다 (2절) . 하나님은 약속과 성취 사이에 긴 간격을 두시면서, 바벨론이 멸망할 “정한 때”가 그로부터 60년 후라는 것을 말씀하지 않으셨습니다. 새알과 같이 기도는 종종 즉시 부화하지 않으며, 이 세상과 우리의 삶을 위한 하나님의 원대한 목적 안에서 점차 숙성해 가는 것입니다.

PRAYER EGGS

Just outside my kitchen window, a robin built her nest under the eaves of our patio roof. I loved watching her tuck grasses into a safe spot and then hunker down to incubate the eggs. Each morning I checked her progress; but each morning, there was nothing. Robin eggs take two weeks to hatch. Such impatience isn’t new for me. I’ve always strained against the work of waiting, especially in prayer. My husband and I waited nearly five years to adopt our first child. Decades ago, author Catherine Marshall wrote, “Prayers, like eggs, don’t hatch as soon as we lay them.” The prophet Habakkuk wrestled with waiting in prayer. Frustrated at God’s silence with Babylon’s brutal mistreatment of the Southern Kingdom of Judah, Habakkuk commits to “stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts,” to “look to see what he will say to me” (HABAKKUK 2:1) . God replies that Habakkuk is to wait for the “appointed time” (V. 3) and directs Habakkuk to write down the revelation” so the word can be spread as soon as it’s given (V. 2) . What God doesn’t mention is that the “appointed time” when Babylon falls is six decades away, creating a long gap between promise and fulfill-ment. Like eggs, prayers often don’t hatch immediately but rather incubate in God’s overarching purposes for our world and our lives. - ELISA MORGAN

무성한 나무

나는 수집하는 것을 항상 좋아했습니다. 어릴 적에 우표를 모았고, 야구 카드와 만화책도 모았습니다. 이제 부모가 되어보니 아이들에게서 똑같은 모습을 봅니다. 그러다가 가끔은 이런 생각을 합니다. ‘너, 정말 곰 인형이 또 필요해?’

물론 그것은 ‘필요’해서라기보다는 뭔가 새로운 것이 주는 매력 때문 이거나, 아니면 때때로 오래되고 희귀한 것에 끌리는 간절한 마음 때문입니다. 마음을 사로잡는 것이 무엇이든, 우리는 “그것”을 갖기만 하면 삶이 더 나아지고 행복해지고 만족하게 될 거라는 유혹을 받습니다.

하지만 그런 것들은 결코 그런 기대를 채워주지 못합니다. 왜냐고요? 그것은 하나님께서 우리를 그분에 의해 채워지도록 창조하셨고, 우리를 둘러싼 세상이 주장하듯 물질이 우리의 갈망하는 마음을 충족시킬 수 없기 때문입니다.

이런 긴장 관계는 전혀 새로운 것이 아닙니다. 잠언서는 두 가지 종류의 삶, 곧 부를 추구하며 사는 삶과 사랑의 하나님에 기반을 두고 관대히 베푸는 삶을 대조해서 보여줍니다. 유진 피터슨은 ‘메시지 성경’에서 잠언 11장 28절을 이렇게 풀어서 말합니다. “물질에 바친 삶은 나무 그루터기 같이 죽은 삶이고, 하나님이 빚으시는 삶은 무성한 나무와 같다.”

이 얼마나 생생한 묘사인가요! 두 종류의 삶, 곧 무성하고 열매 맺는 삶과 공허하고 메마른 삶. 세상은 물질적인 풍요로움이 “좋은 삶”이라고 주장합니다. 그와 대조적으로 하나님은 우리를 불러 그분 안에 뿌리를 내리고 그분의 선하심을 맛보며, 풍성히 열매 맺게 하십니다. 우리가 하나님과 관계를 가지면서 빚어져 갈 때, 하나님은 우리의 마음과 소원을 다시 빚어 우리를 완전히 변화시켜 주십니다.

A FLOURISHING TREE

I’ve always had a collector’s heart. As a kid, I collected stamps. Baseball cards. Comics. Now, as a parent, I see the same impulse in my kids. Sometimes I wonder, Do you really need another teddy bear?

Of course, it’s not about need. It’s about the allure of something new. Or sometimes the tantalizing draw of something old, something rare. Whatever captivates our imagination, we’re tempted to believe that if we only had “X,” our lives would be better. We’d be happy. Content.

Except those things never deliver the goods. Why? Because God created us to be filled by Him, not by the things that the world around us often insists will satisfy our longing hearts.

This tension is hardly new. Proverbs contrasts two ways of life: a life spent pursuing riches versus a life grounded in loving God and giving generously. In The Message, Eugene Peterson paraphrases Proverbs 11:28 like this: “A life devoted to things is a dead life, a stump; a Godshaped life is a flourishing tree.”

What a picture! Two ways of life: one flourishing and fruitful, one hollow and barren. The world insists that material abundance equals “the good life.” In contrast, God invites us to be rooted in Him, to experience His goodness, and to flourish fruitfully. And as we’re shaped by our relationship with Him, God reshapes our hearts and desires, transforming us from the inside out. - ADAM HOLZ

새 힘을 얻음

깨어진 꿈에서 회복하는 방법에 관한 책을 쓴 후 나는 여러 모임의 연사로 한창 바쁜 시기를 보냈습니다. 실망감에 젖어있는 이들에게 희망을 찾도록 도와주는 것은 값진 일이었지만 그 대가도 치러야 했습니다. 어느 날 연단에 막 오르려 할 때 쓰러질 것만 같았습니다. 한동안 잠을 잘 못 잤고, 휴가를 다녀와도 피로가 풀리지 않았으며, 강연 후에 다시 다른 사람들의 문제를 들어야 한다고 생각하니 두려움이 엄습했습니다. 나도 콜스가 말한 유형대로 가고 있었습니다.

성경말씀은 지쳐버리는 것을 극복하는 두 가지 전략을 알려줍니다. 이사야 40장은 피곤한 자는 여호와를 앙망할 때 새 힘을 얻게 된다고 말합니다 (29-31절). 나는 약해져 가는 자신을 밀어붙이는 대신, 하나님의 행하심을 믿으며 그분 안에서 쉬는 것이 필요했습니다. 또한 시편 103편은 하나님께서 좋은 것으로 우리의 소원을 만족하게 하셔서 우리를 새롭게 하신다고 말합니다 (5절). 그 중에는 용서와 구속하심에 관한 내용도 있지만(3-4절), 하나님께서 기쁨과 놀이도 주신다고도 말합니다. 나는 일정을 수정하여 더 많은 기도와 휴식, 그리고 사진 찍기 같은 취미활동을 넣었더니 다시 건강해지는 것을 느끼기 시작했습니다.

지치는 것은 피로에서 시작됩니다. 피로가 더 심해지기 전에 멈추어야 합니다. 우리의 삶에 예배와 쉼이 함께 존재할 때 다른 사람들을 가장 잘 섬길 수 있습니다.

RENEWED STRENGTH

Psychiatrist Robert Coles once noticed a pattern in those who burn out while serving others. The first warning sign is weariness. Next comes cynicism about things ever improving, then bitterness, despair, depression, and finally burnout.

After writing a book about recovering from broken dreams, I once entered a busy season of conference speaking. Helping people find hope after disappointment was richly rewarding, but came at a cost. One day, about to step on stage, I thought I was going to faint. I hadn’t slept well, a vacation hadn’t fixed my weariness, and the thought of hearing another person’s problems afterward filled me with dread. I was following Coles’ pattern.

Scripture gives two strategies for beating burnout. In Isaiah 40, the weary soul is renewed when it hopes in the Lord (VV. 29–31). I needed to rest in God, trusting Him to work, rather than pushing on in my own dwindling strength. And Psalm 103 says God renews us by satisfying our desires with good things (V. 5). While this includes forgiveness and redemption (VV. 3–4), provisions of joy and play come from Him too. When I reworked my schedule to include more prayer, rest, and hobbies like photography, I began to feel healthy again.

Burnout begins with weariness. Let’s stop it from going further. We serve others best when our lives include both worship and rest. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

친절의 사람

금융 쪽 일을 하다가 크게 실망한 레옹은 좀 더 의미 있는 삶을 찾으려고 직장을 그만두었습니다. 그 후 어느 날 한 노숙자가 길모퉁이에서 ‘친절은 가장 좋은 약’이라고 쓴 팻말을 들고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 레옹의 말입니다. “그 말이 내게 즉시 와 닿았습니다. 예수님이 나타나신 것 같았습니다.”

레옹은 친절을 도모하는 국제기관을 설립함으로써 새 삶을 시작하기로 결심했습니다. 그는 낯선 사람들에게서 음식과 휘발유, 머물 곳을 제공받아가며 세계를 돌아다닙니다. 그러고는 자신의 기관을 통해 고아들을 먹이거나 불우아동을 위한 학교를 세우는 등의 선행으로 그들에게 보답합니다. 그는 이렇게 말합니다. “때로는 부드럽게만 보이지만, 친절에는 엄청난 힘이 있습니다.”

하나님이신 그리스도의 본질은 선함입니다. 그러므로 친절은 그분에게서 자연스럽게 따라 나옵니다. 나는 예수님께서 한 과부의 외아들의 장례 행렬을 만났을 때 하신 일에 대한 이야기를 아주 좋아합니다(누가복음 7:11-17). 슬픔에 찬 그 여인은 아마도 아들에게 생계를 의존하고 있었을 것입니다. 그 일에 관여해 달라고 누가 예수님께 부탁했다는 이야기는 없습니다. 예수님은 순전히 그분의 선하신 성품 때문에(13절) 불쌍히 여기셨고 그래서 과부의 아들을 다시 살려주셨습니다. 사람들은 그 이적을 행하신 그리스도를 보고 “하나님께서 자기 백성을 돌보셨다”(16절)고 말했습니다.

THE KINDNESS MAN

Disillusioned and wanting a more meaningful life, Leon quit his job in finance. Then one day he saw a homeless man holding up this sign at a street corner: KINDNESS IS THE BEST MEDICINE. Leon says, “Those words rammed straight into me. It was an epiphany.”

Leon decided to begin his new life by creating an international organization to promote kindness. He travels around the world, relying on strangers to provide him with food, gas, and a place to stay. Then he rewards them, through his organization, with good deeds such as feeding orphans or building on to a school for underprivileged children. He says, “It’s sometimes seen as being soft. But kindness is a profound strength.”

Christ’s very essence as God is goodness, so kindness naturally flowed from Him. I love the story of what Jesus did when He came upon the funeral procession of a widow’s only son (LUKE 7:11–17). The grieving woman most likely was dependent on her son for financial support. We don’t read in the story that anyone asked Jesus to intervene. Purely from the goodness of His nature (V. 13), He was concerned and brought her son back to life. The people said of Christ, “God has come to help his people” (V. 16). - ANNE CETAS

작은 불꽃 하나

“지금 도서관 안에 있는데 바로 밖에 불길이 보여요!” 우리는 목소리를 듣고 그 애가 겁에 질려 있다는 것을 알 수 있었습니다. 그것은 우리 딸의 목소리였습니다. 그때 우리는 대학 캠퍼스야말로 우리 딸과 함께 거의 3천 명이나 되는 학생들에게 가장 안전한 장소라는 것도 알았습니다. 2018년 울시 화재는 대부분 소방대원들을 포함한 모든 사람의 예측보다 더 빠른 속도로 번졌습니다. 아주 작은 불꽃이 캘리포니아 협곡의 기록적인 폭염과 건조한 상태, 그리고 산타아나의 강풍을 힘입어 결국에는 97,000 에이커(약 393제곱킬로미터)를 태우고, 1600채 이상의 건물을 파괴했으며, 세 사람의 목숨을 앗아갔습니다. 평소 푸르게 우거졌던 해안선이 화재 진압 후에 찍은 사진에서는 황량한 달 표면처럼 보였습니다.

야고보서에서 저자는 작지만 힘 있는 것을 언급하면서 “말들의 입에 물리는 재갈”과 배의 키(3:3-4)를 예로 듭니다. 그러나 이 예들은 친숙하기는 하지만 우리와는 별로 연관이 없습니다. 다음으로 그는 좀 더 익숙하고 모든 사람이 갖고 있는 작은 것, 바로 혀에 대해 언급합니다. 이 장에서는 특별히 선생들을 향해 먼저 말하고 있지만(1절), 우리 각자에게도 곧바로 적용할 수 있습니다. 비록 작은 것에 지나지 않지만 혀는 참담한 결과를 초래할 수 있습니다.

우리의 작은 혀는 강합니다. 하지만 우리의 크신 하나님은 더욱 강하십니다. 그분께서 매일 도와주심에 힘입어 우리는 우리의 말을 제어하고 잘 사용할 수 있습니다.

JUST A SPARK

“We’re in the library, and we can see the flames right outside!” She was scared. We could hear it in her voice. We know her voice— the voice of our daughter. At the same time we knew her college campus was the safest place for her and her almost 3,000 fellow students. The 2018 Woolsey Fire spread more quickly than anyone anticipated—most of all fire personnel. The record heat and dry conditions in the California canyon, along with the legendary Santa Ana winds, were all the rather small sparks needed to ultimately burn 97,000 acres, destroy more than 1,600 structures, and kill three people. In the photos taken after the fire was contained, the usual lush coastline resembled the barren surface of the moon.

In the book of James, the author names some small but powerful things: “bits [in] the mouths of horses” and the rudders of ships (3:3–4). And while familiar, these examples are somewhat removed from us. But then he names something a little closer to home, something small that every human being possesses—a tongue. And while this chapter is first directed specifically to teachers (V. 1), the application quickly spreads to each of us. The tongue, small as it is, can lead to disastrous results.

Our small tongues are powerful, but our big God is more powerful. His help on a daily basis provides the strength to rein in and guide our words. - JOHN BLASE

말하는 바나나

‘절대로 포기하지 마. 누군가를 미소 짓게 하렴. 너는 대단해. 어디서 왔는지 보다 어디로 가고 있는지가 중요해.’ 버지니아 주 버지니아비치에 위치한 이 학교 학생들은 학교 식당에서 이런 메시지가 한마디씩 적힌 바나나를 받곤 했습니다. 식당 관리인 스테이시 트루먼이 시간을 내어 과일에 격려 메시지를 쓴 것인데, 아이들은 이것을 “말하는 바나나”라고 불렀습니다.

이런 배려 깊은 봉사는 옛 도시 안디옥의 “영적으로 어린 사람들” 에게 품었던 바나바의 마음을 떠올려줍니다(사도행전 11:22-24). 바나바는 사람들에게 자신감을 부여하는 능력이 있는 사람으로 유명했습니다. 믿음과 성령이 충만한 선한 사람으로 알려져 있던 그는 새로운 신자들에게 “굳건한 마음으로 주와 함께 머물러 있으라”(23절)고 권고했습니다. 나는 그가 돕고 싶은 사람들과 함께 있을 때 이런 말을 하지 않았을까 상상해 봅니다. ‘계속 기도하십시오. 주님을 신뢰하십시오. 삶이 힘들 때 하나님과 가까이하십시오.’

어린아이처럼, 새로운 신자들에게도 많은 격려가 필요합니다. 그들은 충분히 잘할 수 있습니다. 다만 자기가 무엇을 잘하는지 알지 못할 뿐입니다. 그들은 하나님께서 그들 안에서, 그들을 통해 무엇을 하고자 하시는지 온전히 깨닫지 못할지도 모릅니다. 그리고 대적들이 그들의 믿음이 꽃피지 못하도록 종종 과도하게 작업하기도 합니다.

한동안 예수님과 동행하는 삶을 살아본 사람들은 주님을 위해 사는 것이 얼마나 힘들 수 있는지 잘 이해합니다. 하나님의 영이 우리를 인도하셔서 영적 진리를 생각나게 하실 때, 우리 모두 서로 격려를 주고받을 수 있기를 바랍니다.

TALKING BANANAS

Never give up. Be the reason someone smiles. You’re amazing. It isn’t where you came from—it’s where you’re going that counts. Some schoolchildren in Virginia Beach, Virginia, found these messages and more written on bananas in their lunchroom. Cafeteria manager Stacey Truman took the time to write the encouraging notes on the fruit, which the kids dubbed “talking bananas.”

This caring outreach reminds me of Barnabas’ heart for the “spiritual youngsters” in the ancient city of Antioch (ACTS 11:22–24). Barnabas was famous for his ability to inspire people. Known as a good man, full of faith and the Holy Spirit, he prompted the new believers to “remain true to the Lord with all their hearts” (V. 23). I imagine he spent time with those he wanted to help, saying things like: Keep praying. Trust the Lord. Stay close to God when life is hard.

New believers, like children, need loads of encouragement. They’re full of potential. They’re discovering what they’re good at. They may not fully realize what God wants to do in and through them, and often the enemy works overtime to prevent their faith from flourishing.

Those of us who’ve walked with Jesus for a while understand how hard living for Jesus can be. May all of us be able to give and receive encouragement as God’s Spirit guides us and reminds us of spiritual truth. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT
