줄을 서서 기다릴 필요 없는 사랑
나의 래브라도 리트리버 종 애완견은 가끔 관심을 끌기 위해 내 앞에서 나의 물건을 물고 돌아다닙니다. 어느 날 아침 나는 책상에 앉아 등을 돌린 자세로 글을 쓰고 있었는데 맥스가 내 지갑을 물고 달아났습니다. 그러나 그러는 것을 내가 못 봤다는 것을 안 맥스는 내게 돌아와 지갑을 입에 물고 눈을 굴리고 꼬리를 흔들면서 함께 놀자고 나에게 코를 들이밀었습니다.
맥스의 장난에 웃었지만 그것을 보며 나는 다른 사람들에게 주의를 기울이는 일에도 한계가 있음을 알게 되었습니다. 나는 가족이나 친구들과 시간을 보내려고 노력을 많이 해왔지만 다른 일에 시간과 생각을 빼앗기다 보면 그런 사실도 잊어버린 채 하루가 다 가버리고 사랑은 여전히 못하고 맙니다.
그러나 한없이 크신 하나님 아버지는 우리 각 사람을 가장 가까이서 봐주시고 우리가 사는 동안 폐의 호흡을 한 번도 멈추지 않게 돌봐주신다는 사실에 얼마나 위로가 되는지 모릅니다. 하나님은 그분의 백성들에게 이렇게 약속하십니다. “너희가 노년에 이르기까지 내가 그리하겠고 백발이 되기까지 내가 너희를 품을 것이라 내가 지었은즉 내가 업을 것이요 내가 품고 구하여 내리라” (이사야 46:4).
하나님은 우리를 위해 언제나 시간을 내어주십니다. 아무리 복잡하고 어려워도 하나님은 우리의 모든 상황을 자세히 알고 계시며 우리가 기도하며 부를 때 언제나 거기에 계십니다. 우리의 구원자 하나님의 무한한 사랑을 받으려고 줄을 서서 기다릴 필요가 전혀 없습니다.

No Line to Love
Sometimes when my Labrador retriever wants attention, he’ll take something of mine and parade it in front of me. One morning as I was writing at the desk with my back turned, Max snatched my wallet and ran off. But realizing I hadn’t seen him do it, he returned and nudged me with his nose—wallet in mouth, eyes dancing, tail wagging, taunting me to play.
Max’s antics made me laugh, but they also reminded me of my limitations when it comes to being attentive to others. So often I’ve intended to spend time with family or friends, but other things occupy my time and awareness; and before I know it the day slips away and love is left undone.
How comforting to know that our heavenly Father is so great that He’s able to attend to each of us in the most intimate ways—even sustaining every breath in our lungs for as long as we live. He promises His people, “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you” (ISAIAH 46:4).
God always has time for us. He understands every detail of our circumstances—no matter how complex or difficult—and is there whenever we call on Him in prayer. We never have to wait in line for our Savior’s unlimited love. - JAMES BANKS
