예수님을 겸손히 따르기

우리 집 근처에는 우리가 돌보는 어린 남자 아이를 데리고 자주 산책하는 거기에는 아이는 뛰어 들어갈 수 있지만 나는 구부려야 들어갈 수 있는 작은 문이 하나 있습니다. 아이는 내가 무릎을 꿇고 겨우 들어가 자기를 쫓아가면 웃습니다.

그 정원의 작은 문은 마태복음 18장에서 예수님이 한 어린아이를 곁에 부르시고는 천국에 들어갈 사람의 모습을 설명하신 가르침을 생각나게 합니다 (2절). 예수님 시대의 아이는 하찮고 무시되는 존재였기 때문에 이 예화는 매우 파격적이었습니다. 오늘날과는 달리, 아이들의 의견이나 바람은 중요하지 않았습니다. 예수님은 이 이야기를 통해 우리 인간의 성향, 곧 남이 알아주는 권력과 영향력을 추구하는 것을 말씀하신 것입니다.

물론 예수님은 제자들에게 다시 어린아이가 되라고 하신 것이 아니라, 예수님을 섬기는 사람들의 특징에 대해 말씀하신 것입니다. 그런 사람들의 가장 큰 특징은 겸손으로, 곧 “자기를 낮추는 자”(4절)이며 남을 섬기는 사람인 것입니다.

정원의 작은 문은 우리가 저절로 겸손할 수 없다는 것을 일깨워줍니다. 그럼에도 예수님을 믿는 사람은 그렇게 살아야 합니다. 우리는 구원자 예수님을 따라야 합니다. 그는 “자기를 비워 종의 형체를 가지사”(빌립보서 2:7) 우리가 살아야 할 삶의 본을 보이셨습니다.

FOLLOWING JESUS IN HUMILITY

Near our home is a famous garden where we often take walks with a young boy our family cares for. His favorite area is the Children’s Garden, which has a small door large enough for him to run through but small enough to force me to crouch. He laughs as I drop to my knees and wiggle through the small opening to chase him.

The small garden gate reminds me of Jesus’ object lesson in Matthew 18, where He calls a little child to His side to explain the type of person who will enter the kingdom of heaven (V. 2). It was a bold example, for in Christ’s day to be a child was to be inconsequential and overlooked. Unlike today, their opinions and desires didn’t matter. Jesus uses this description to highlight our human tendency to be noticed and seek power and influence.

Of course, Jesus wasn’t asking His disciples to become children again but rather pointing to the traits that mark those who serve him. The biggest marker is humility—the person who “takes the lowly position” (V. 4) and serves others.

The small garden door is a reminder that humility doesn’t come naturally to us. Believers in Jesus, however, are to be this way. We’re to follow our Savior, who modeled this way of living by making “himself nothing by taking the very nature of a ser- vant” (PHILIPPIANS 2:7).

넘치는 사랑

여름 캠프의 마지막 밤, 여러 아이들 중 혼자 서 있던 나는 십대의 아이답게 마음에 상처가 되었습니다. 나는 텐트로 돌아가 그룹 리더가 나를 보러 와도 그냥 자는 척 했습니다. 다음 날 아침, 그녀가 어제 일에 대해 이야기하려 했지만 나는 피했습니다.

그녀는 나중에 내게 편지를 보내 하나님이 나를 진정으로 돌보신다는 것을 가르쳐주었습니다. 그녀는 바울 사도의 “너희 안에서 선한 일을 시작하신 이가 그리스도 예수의 날까지 이루실 줄을 우리는 확신하노라”(빌립보서 1:6)는 말씀을 내게 주었습니다. 이 사도의 말은 바로 나에게 주는 말씀으로 느껴졌습니다.

바울은 그보다 10여년 전 개척한 빌립보 교회에 편지를 보내 하나님과 성도에 대한 사랑의 뿌리를 “지식과 모든 총명”(9절)에 두라고 했습니다. 하나님이 그들을 “예수 그리스도로 말미암아 오는 열매로 가득”(11절) 채우시면서 그들 안에서, 그리고 그들을 통해 하나님의 일을 계속하실 것이기 때문입니다. 그때 나는 그 말씀의 의미를 잘 이해하지 못했지만, 하나님께 사랑받는 자로서 나의 정체성이 예수님의 사랑을 알고 받아들이는 데 있음을 깨닫기 시작했습니다.

하나님은 우리가 그분의 사랑을 받이들이고, 그 사랑이 우리 안에 점점 더 풍성해지기를 원하십니다. 하나님이 우리를 그의 기쁨과 평화로 채우실 때 우리는 바로 하나님 뿐 아니라 우리 안에서 역사하시는 그분의 선한 일에 대한 지식도 자라날 것입니다.

ABOUNDING LOVE

At the last night of summer camp, my teenage self felt conspicu- ous as I stood alone in a group of campers. When one of them mocked me, I felt hurt. I ran back to my tent, pretend- ing to sleep when the group leader checked on me. The next morning I avoided her attempt to talk about it.

She later wrote to me, helping me understand that God truly cared for me. She quoted from the apostle Paul: We can be “confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (PHILIPPIANS 1:6). I felt like the apostle’s words were directed right to me.

Paul wrote to the church at Philippi, which he’d planted over a decade earlier, to encourage them to root their love for God and each other “in knowledge and depth of insight” (V. 9). God would carry on His work in and through them as He filled them “with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ” (V. 11). At the time I didn’t understand the original context, but I started to comprehend that my identity as one loved by God came from knowing and accepting the love of Jesus.

God desires that we receive His love and that it would abound in us more and more. As He fills us with His joy and peace, we’ll grow in the knowledge not only of Him but of His good work in us.

하나님께 초점을 맞추기

어떤 문제 때문에 직장 동료와 잠깐 통화할 일이 있었습니다. 동료가 내 말했습니다. 그러자 동료는 “당신을 위해 기도해 드릴까요?”라며 짧게 물었습니다. 그러라고 하자 그녀는 30초 정도 하나님께 나를 고쳐달라는 기도를 해주었습니다. 나는 “가끔 기도하는 걸 잊어버려요. 통증에 사로잡혀 하나님께 나아가지 못했네요.”라고 고백했습니다.

이런 고백을 하면서 나는 초점을 어디다 두고 사는지, 곧 내가 겪고 있는 어려움과 문제에 두고 사는지 아니면 하나님께 두고 사는지 생각하게 되었습니다. 그날, 통증이 너무 심해서 내 생각은 온통 그 아픔에 사로잡혀 있었습니다. 그러나 이사야서 26장 3절 말씀은 우리의 치유자이시며 삶을 붙드시는 하나님께 우리 마음의 초점을 맞출 때, 우리가 평안을 누릴 수 있다고 말합니다. “주께서 심지가 견고한 자를 평강하고 평강하도록 지키시리니 이는 그가 주를 의뢰함이니이다.” 고통이 곧바로 사라지지 않을 수도 있고, 어쩌면 이 생에서 영원히 사라지지 않을 수도 있지만, 선지자는 신실하시며 우리의 필요를 공급해 주시는 하나님을 “신뢰하라”고 우리에게 상기시켜 줍니다(4절).

이사야서의 이 구절은 이스라엘 백성들에게 포로 시기와 그 이후의 시기에 주신 하나님의 약속들을 일깨워주었습니다. 그들은 하나님께서 베풀어 주실 것에 대한 믿음과 희망을 굳게 붙들고 다시 하나님께 찬양의 노래를 불렀습니다 (1–2절). 그리고 이사야 선지자의 그 말은 우리가 어떤 고통을 겪고 있든지 하나님을 신뢰하고 하나님께 부르짖는 일에 초점을 맞출 때, 우리 또한 위로를 얻을 수 있음을 다시 일깨워줍니다.

FOCUSED ON GOD

My coworker made a quick call to discuss an issue. She asked how I was doing, and I admitted that I had a really painful sinus infection, and the medicine wasn’t working. My co- worker simply asked, “May I pray for you?” After I agreed, she of- fered a thirty-second prayer to God for my healing. I admitted, “Sometimes I forget to pray. I was so focused on the pain I didn’t turn to God.”

My confession made me think about where I place my focus— on my struggles and problems or on God. On this day, my thoughts centered on the pain because of its intensity. But Isaiah 26:3 reminds us that when we keep our minds focused on God, our healer and sustainer, we can find peace: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” While the pain may not go away instantly, or perhaps ever in this life, the prophet reminds us to place our “trust in” the one who is faithful and able to provide what we need (V. 4).

This passage from Isaiah pointed the Israelites to God’s prom- ises during and after their exile. They would sing songs of praise to Him again as they clung to their faith and hope in what He would provide (VV. 1-2). And the prophet’s words also remind us that whatever pain we may endure, we too can find comfort as we focus on trusting in God and calling out to Him.

하나님의 임재 안에서

로렌스 형제의 저서 ‘하나님의 임재 연습’은 1692년에 처음 출판되었습니다. 이 책에서 그는 어떻게 하나님을 자신의 평범한 일상 생활로 초대했는지를 설명하고 있습니다. 오늘날에도 로렌스 형제의 글은 마당의 잔디를 깎거나 식료품을 사거나 개를 산책시키는 일과 같이 우리가 하는 모든 일에서 기도하는 마음으로 하나님을 찾으라고 권면합니다.

나는 매일 우리집 개 윈스턴을 산책시킵니다. 산책의 목표는 윈스턴을 운동시키는 것이지만, 윈스턴의 목표는 모든 것의 냄새를 맡는 것입니다. 이 시간을 “산책”이라고 말하는 것도 사실 과한 표현입니다. 가다 말고 멈추는 경우가 더 많기 때문입니다. 요즘에는 산책을 계속해서 이어 나갈 수 없어 짜증을 내기보다 이런 순간들을 통해 인생이 개를 산책시키는 일과 많이 흡사하다는 것을 깨달을 수 있도록 하나님께 간구하고 있습니다. 계획한 일들이 뜻하지 않게 중단될 때를 포함하여 삶의 모든 일에서 하나님께 신실하게 순종할 때 우리는 그분의 임재를 경험하게 됩니다.

잠언 6장에서 솔로몬도 이와 비슷한 교훈을 말하면서, 개미의 일상적이고 겸손한 예를 들며 우리에게 충실하게 일하라고 독려합니다. “게으른 자여 개미에게 가서 그가 하는 것을 보고 지혜를 얻으라”(6절). 솔로몬은 인내하며 매일 일하는 한 가지 예로 개미를 사용했습니다(7-8절).

우리와 하나님과의 관계를 교회나 경건의 시간처럼 정해진 “영적인” 시간으로만 한정할 필요가 없습니다. 우리가 충실하게 하나님께 순종한다면, 하나님은 우리가 매일의 시간 시간들을 통해 하나님의 거룩한 발자취를 볼 수 있게 해주십니다.

IN GOD’S PRESENCE

In 1692, Brother Lawrence’s work The Practice of the Presence of God was first published. In it, he described how he invited God into his mundane daily activities. Brother Lawrence’s words still challenge us to prayerfully seek God in everything we do, like mowing the yard, getting groceries, or walking the dog.

Each day, I take our dog, Winston, for a walk. My goal for him is to exercise. Winston’s goal? Sniffing everything. Calling this time “a walk” is a generous fiction. More often, we’re going for a . . . stop. Lately, instead of getting frustrated by a lack of forward progress, I’ve been asking God to help me see these moments as a reminder that life is a lot like walking a dog. We experience God’s presence as we faithfully obey Him in life’s everyday activities, including their unexpected interruptions.

In Proverbs 6, Solomon offers a similar lesson, using the everyday, humble example of the ant to call us to work faithfully: “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise” (V. 6). Solomon used ants as an example of everyday, patient labor (VV. 7-8).

Our relationship with God needn’t be compartmentalized into designated “spiritual” times alone, like church or a quiet time. Instead, as we faithfully obey Him, God invites us to see His divine fingerprints throughout each day.

그리스도 안에서 강하게 맞서기

얼마전 어머니가 아프리카의 물웅덩이를 실시간으로 비추는 웹캠에 찍힌 놀라운 대결 장면을 보내 주셨습니다. 젬스복은 길이가 2피트(약 60 센티미터)도 넘는 뿔을 가진 덩치 큰 영양인데 좀체 겁을 먹지 않는 강한 동물입니다. 그러나 용감하고 소란스러운 타조 무리를 만나면 이야기가 달라집니다.

젬스복보다 키가 큰 우두머리 타조가 커다란 깃털을 푸덕이며 포효하면서 세 마리 젬스복에게 쿵쿵대며 달려들자 그들이 도망쳤습니다.

나는 어머니에게 “아마도 자기들의 뿔이 얼마나 센지 몰랐나 봐요.”라고 말했습니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리도 영적 원수인 사탄의 공격 앞에서 우리가 가진 능력을 잊어버릴 수 있습니다. 우리에게는 우리 안에 살아 계시는 성령님이 있고(로마서 8:11), 우리를 돕는 하나님의 갑옷이 있습니다. “마귀의 간계를 능히 대적하기 위하여 하나님의 전신갑주를 입으라”(에베소서 6:11). 사탄은 우리가 하나님의 말씀을 의심하게 만들고, 그리스도 안에 있는 우리의 정체성을 흔들며, 죄를 짓게 유혹합니다.

그러나 하나님의 갑옷은 “진리의 허리띠와... 의의 흉배... 믿음의 방패... 구원의 투구와 성령의 검 곧 하나님의 말씀”(14–17절)으로 되어 있어 우리는 강하게 맞설 수 있습니다.

원수가 두려움, 정죄, 절망감으로 우리를 공격할 때, 우리가 하나님의 자녀라는 것과 우리가 강하게 맞설 수 있도록 잘 무장되어 있다는 것을 잊지 맙시다.

STANDING STRONG IN CHRIST

Recently, my mom gave me a play-by-play of a surprising confrontation she saw on a live webcam feed from a water- ing hole in Africa. The Gemsbok, a large antelope, has horns that can be more than two feet long, making it a formidable animal that doesn’t seem to scare easily. That is, unless it comes across a group of brave and rowdy ostriches.

The lead ostrich, which was taller than its foes, shook its large feathers, roared, and stomped toward three Gemsbok, causing them to flee.

“I guess they didn’t realize how powerful their horns are,” I said to my mom.

Believers in Jesus can forget the power we have when faced with attacks from our spiritual enemy, Satan. We have the Holy Spirit who lives inside us (ROMANS 8:11) and the armor of God to help us: “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes” (EPHESIANS 6:11). Satan wants to challenge our belief in God’s Word, question our identity in Christ, and tempt us to sin.

But we can stand strong because God’s armor includes “the belt of truth, . . . the breastplate of righteousness, . . . the shield of faith, . . . the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (VV. 14-17).

When the enemy attacks us with feelings of fear, condemna- tion, or despair, let’s remember we’re God’s children and are well equipped to stand strong.

마음을 담아 보낸 꾸러미

최근에 “케어(CARE, 돌봄)” 꾸러미의 이름이 “미국 대외 원조 물자 발송 협회”(Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe, 현재 명칭은 Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere)의 머리글자에서 유래했다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 이 단체는 제2차 세계대전 때 피난민이 된 유럽인들을 돕기 위해 그곳으로 식품 상자들을 보냈습니다. 대학을 다니고 있는 우리 아이들에게 보내는 돌봄 꾸러미는 대부분 집에서 만든 간식과 사탕 같은 것들이지만, 집에 두고 간 좋아하는 옷가지나 문구류 같은 실용적인 물건들도 함께 보내곤 합니다.

“돌봄 꾸러미”라는 말이 생겨난 지는 얼마 되지 않았지만 도움이 되는 물품을 보내는 관행은 오래 전부터 있었습니다. 디모데후서 마지막 부분에도 그것이 나옵니다. 로마 감옥에 갇혀 있는 동안 바울은 그가 신뢰하는 제자에게 편지를 쓰면서 몇 가지 개인적인 부탁을 하면서 끝을 맺습니다. 그는 디모데에게 마가를 데려와 자신을 도와달라고 부탁한(4:11) 다음, 자신의 외투와 “특별히 가죽 종이에 쓴” 책(13절)과 같은 개인적인 물품들을 부탁했습니다. 아마도 겨울이 다가오고 있었기 때문에 외투가 필요했을 것이고, 가죽 종이에 쓴 책에는 구약성서의 필사본이 들어있었는지도 모릅니다. 이유가 무엇이든, 바울은 기분을 전환시키고 힘을 북돋아 주는데 필요한 동역자들과의 만남과 실용적인 물품들을 원했습니다.

받는 사람이 가까이 살든 멀리 살든, 돌봄을 받고 있다고 느끼게 해주는 것들은 자그마한 격려라도 필요한 사람에게 큰 영향을 끼칠 수 있습니다. 이웃에게 식사를 대접하거나, 사랑하는 사람이나 지인에게 정성스러운 카드를 쓰거나, 멀리 있는 친구에게 물품을 가득 담은 소포를 보내는 일들로 하나님의 사랑을 실제적으로 널리 전할 수 있습니다.

SENT WITH CARE

I recently learned that the name “CARE” package came from the acronym for “Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe,” a group that sent boxes of food to help Europeans displaced during World War II. While the care packages I send my kids at college are mostly filled with homemade treats and candy, they usually include a few practical items—a favorite shirt forgotten at home or extra school supplies.

While the name “care package” may be modern, the practice of sending helpful items is far older. It’s even tucked away at the end of 2 Timothy. Writing while imprisoned in Rome, Paul con- cluded his letter to his trusted disciple with some personal requests. He asked that Timothy come and bring Mark to help him (4:11). Then he requested some personal items: his cloak and his “scrolls, especially the parchments” (V. 13). Perhaps the cloak was needed because winter was coming, and maybe the scrolls contained copies of the Old Testament. Whatever the reason, Paul longed for companionship and practical items to refresh and encourage him.

Tangible reminders of care, whether the recipient lives near or far, can have a significant impact on someone in need of a little encouragement. The gift of a meal for a neighbor, a thought- ful card written to a loved one or acquaintance, or a package full of goodies sent to a faraway friend can extend God’s love in practical ways.

믿음 안의 소망

크리스틴의 아들은 겨우 일곱 살 나이에 암으로 세상을 떠났습니다. 그리고 3년이 지난 지금, 큰아들이 불치병 진단을 받았습니다. 크리스틴과 함께 슬퍼하며 위로해준 예수 믿지 않는 친구들은 크리스틴이 왜 계속 예수님을 믿는지 이해할 수 없어서 물었습니다. “네 하나님이 어떻게 이런 일들이 일어나게 놔 둘 수 있니? 왜 그를 계속 믿는 거야?”

하지만 크리스틴에게는 오히려 그것이 믿음을 계속 이어가는 더 큰 이유가 되었습니다. “왜 이런 일들이 일어나는지 이해할 수는 없어. 하지만 하나님께서 이 어려움을 헤쳐 나가도록 도와 주실 줄 알아. 오직 하나님만이 내게 계속 나아갈 소망을 주실 수 있어.”

다윗 왕도 감당하기 힘든 상황에 처했을 때 이와 같은 소망과 믿음 때문에 계속 나아갈 수 있었습니다. 자신을 파멸시키려는 적들에게 둘러싸여 그도 아마 왜 그런 일들이 자신에게 일어나는지 알 수 없었을 것입니다. 하지만 그는 자신이 따르는 하나님이 그분의 때에 자신을 구하시고 축복하실 거라는 사실을 믿을 수 있었습니다(시편 31:14-16). 이 확실한 소망 때문에 그는 하나님께 계속 순종하며 “나의 앞날이 주의 손에 있사오니”(15절)라고 말할 수 있었으며, 그 소망에 힘입어 또한 “여호와를 바라는 너희들아 강하고 담대하라”(24절)고 말할 수 있었습니다.

상황이 너무 힘들고 나아질 기미가 거의 보이지 않을 때, 우리는 하나님께 더욱 굳게 매달리고 하나님만이 주실 수 있는 삶의 소망에 더욱 굳세게 붙어 있어야 합니다.

HOPE IN FAITH

Kristin’s son had died from cancer when he was just seven. Now, three years later, her older son was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Friends who were not believers in Jesus grieved with her, but they couldn’t understand why she continued to trust Christ. “How could your God allow this? Why keep believ- ing in Him?” they asked.

For Kristin, however, it was an even stronger reason to keep believing. “I don’t understand why this is happening,” she said, “but I know God will help us through this. Only God can give me hope to keep going.”

Such a hope and trust kept King David going when he found himself in overwhelming circumstances. Surrounded by enemies seeking his destruction, he probably couldn’t understand why all this was happening to him. Yet he knew he was following a God he could trust to deliver and bless him in His time (PSALM 31:14-16). This certain hope enabled him to keep submitting to God and to say, “My times are in your hands” (V. 15). And it uplifted him, such that he could also say, “Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord” (V. 24).

In times when we feel overwhelmed and there seems little to look forward to, we know we can hang on even more tightly to God and the life-giving hope He alone provides.

자비와 우리의 난장판

주일학교 시간에 세 살 난 피터에 대한 나의 인내심은 거의 바닥나고 있었습니다. 피터는 기분이 안 좋았고, 다른 아이들에게 무례했으며, 가장 인기있는 장난감을 줬는데도 여전히 불평했습니다. 측은히 여겼던 마음이 이제 짜증으로 바뀌었습니다. ‘그래 좋아, 피터가 계속 고집스럽게 힘들게 하면 아이를 부모에게 돌려보낼 거고 그러면 아이는 재미있는 것들을 다 놓치는 거지 뭐.’

나는 어떤 못 마땅한 상황들을 받아들이는데 있어 한계가 있음을 너무 자주 발견합니다. 누군가 내 조언을 무시하거나 내 도움을 거절하면, 그들은 더 이상 내 도움을 받을 자격이 없게 되는 것입니다. 다행히 하나님은 우리에게 그런 식으로 행하지 않으십니다. 요나 선지자는 하나님께서 니느웨로 가서 하나님의 말씀을 전하라고 명령하셨을 때(요나 1:2) 고집스럽게 불순종하다가 하나님의 크신 자비를 경험하게 되었습니다. 요나는 반항하며 반대쪽으로 향해 가다가 무서운 폭풍을 만나 바다에 던져지고 큰 물고기가 그를 삼켰습니다. 스스로 자초한 재앙이었습니다(4, 15-17절). 요나가 결국 “그의 하나님 여호와께 기도”(2:1)하자 하나님은 여전히 그의 기도를 들으시고 주저하던 선지자를 기꺼이 용서해 주셨습니다. 물고기로부터 벗어난 요나는 하나님의 은혜로 니느웨로 갈 두 번째 기회를 얻게 되었습니다(3:1).

어린 피터는 놀이터에 데리고 가니 기분이 풀어졌습니다. 나보다 인내심이 많은 동료 교사가 생각해 낸 기발한 방법이었습니다. 우리가 난장판일 때도 변함없이 우리를 찾아오는 그 자비가 얼마나 아름다운지 모릅니다.

MERCY AND OUR MESS

During Sunday school, my patience with three-year-old Peter was wearing thin. He was unhappy, unkind to the other kids, and absolutely refused to be content, even when we offered him the most coveted toys. My pity turned to annoyance. If he stubbornly persisted in being difficult, then fine, I’d send him back to his parents and he would miss out on all the fun.

Too often I find my compassion has conditions. If someone ignores my advice or refuses my help, then they don’t deserve it anymore. Fortunately, God doesn’t act that way toward us. The prophet Jonah experienced His great mercy after a time of stubborn disobedience when God commanded him to travel and preach to Nineveh (JONAH 1:2). Defiantly choosing the opposite direction, Jonah was caught in a terrible storm, set adrift at sea, and then swallowed by a great fish—a self-made disaster (VV. 4, 15-17). When Jonah finally “prayed to the Lord his God” (2:1), God was still listening to him, ready to forgive His reluctant prophet. Jonah was delivered from the fish and graciously given a second chance to go to Nineveh (3:1).

In little Peter’s case, a trip to the playground consoled him—a brilliant idea by a helper with more patience than I had shown. How beautiful is mercy that continually seeks us out, even in the middle of our own mess.

예수님을 닮으라

키가 큰 한 승객이 단거리 비행용 소형 비행기의 통로에 일어서자 마치 접혔던 몸이 펴지는 듯 보였습니다. 그때 나는 그가 들고 있는 책에서 ‘예수님을 닮으라’고 크게 쓰인 책 제목을 보았습니다. 그러나 몇 분 후, 그 남자가 대기 중인 줄에서 자신의 가방을 꺼내기 위해 다른 사람들을 밀치는 것을 보았습니다. 예수님을 닮으라고? 나는 그가 그리스도를 아는 진정한 “형제”인지 알 수 없었지만, 예수님을 잘못 전하는 그 이기적인 모습에 크게 실망했습니다.

에스컬레이터에 올라타면서 여전히 그 책표지가 보이도록 들고 있는 그 남자를 또 보았습니다. 바로 그때 내 마음을 찌르는 생각이 있었습니다. ‘엘리사, 너도 예수님을 닮아야지. 판단하지 마.’ 나는 내 모습도 예수님의 기운을 발산하고 있는지 스스로 자문해 보았습니다.

예수님처럼 되는 것은 우리가 하나님의 뜻에 순종할 때 하나님이 우리 안에서 그분의 성품을 키워 나가시는 변화의 과정, 즉 일종의 변형입니다. 바울은 예수님을 믿는 자들이 “그와 같은 형상으로 변화하여 영광에서 영광에 이르니 곧 주의 영으로 말미암음이니라”(고린도후서 3:18)라고 썼습니다. 요한은 우리가 이것을 성취하기는 커녕 이해하기조차 어렵다는 것에 놀라움을 금치 못합니다. “우리가 지금은 하나님의 자녀라 장래에 어떻게 될지는 아직 나타나지 아니하였으나 그가 나타나시면 우리가 [순수함에서] 그와 같을 줄을 아는 것은 그의 참모습 그대로 볼 것이기 때문이니”(요한1서 3:2-3).

에스컬레이터에서 내리면서 나는 다시 그 책을 바라보았습니다. ‘예수님을 닮으라’는 그 말은 나에게 새로운 의미로 다가왔으며, 내 시선이 나 자신의 마음과 삶으로 향하게 해주었습니다.

BE LIKE JESUS

The tall passenger seemed to unfold as he stood up in the aisle of the small regional jet. Then I noticed the title of his boldly displayed book: Be Like Jesus. A few minutes later, I saw that same man push others aside to grab his bag off the waiting trolley. Be like Jesus? I didn’t know if he was truly a “brother” who knew Christ, but I was dismayed by this display of selfishness that misrepresented Jesus.

As my feet hit the escalator, I saw the man again, book cover still visible. The words then elbowed my own heart. Be like Jesus, Elisa. Don’t judge. I wondered, was my presence emanating anything of Jesus?

Becoming like Jesus is a transformational process—a metamorphosis— of God growing His character in us as we yield to His ways. Paul wrote that believers in Jesus “are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord” (2 CORINTHIANS 3:18). John marvels at how hard this is for us to understand—much less achieve: “Now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him [in purity], for we shall see him as he is” (1 JOHN 3:2-3).

As the escalator spilled us out, I glanced again at the book. Be Like Jesus—the words took on new meaning for me and redirected my gaze to my own heart and life.

하나님의 손길이 닿는 곳

50년 형을 선고받은 열 여섯 살 소녀가 최고 보안 등급의 교도소 독방에 수감되어 있었습니다. 그 소녀의 나이 때문에 다른 수감자들과 격리된 것입니다. 거의 1년 동안 외부 방문객이 아예 없었는데, 교도소에서 전도 사역 및 세례식이 진행되는 동안 교도관들이 그 사역의 지도자가 소녀의 감방에 들어가는 것을 허락해주었습니다. 그 소녀는 복음을 듣고 자신의 삶을 예수님께 드린 후 세례 받기를 요청했습니다. 처음에 사역팀은 물병을 사용하여 세례를 주려고 생각했지만, 교도관들이 교도소 전체를 폐쇄하고 그 소녀를 이동식 세례 장소로 데리고 갔습니다. 하나님의 사람들이 기도하는 가운데 그 소녀는 울음을 터뜨렸습니다.

하나님은 그분을 거부하는 자들을 심판하겠다고 약속하시지만, 또한 회개하는 자들에게는 자비를 베푸십니다. 그리고 하나님의 이름을 믿는 자들을 회복시키시고 보호하십니다(스바냐 3:10-12). 회개하면 구원으로 이어지는데, 그것은 하나님께서 우리가 마땅히 받아야 할 형벌을 친히 “제거하셨기” 때문 입니다(15절). 하나님에 대해 스바냐 선지자가 한 말 속에 소망이 울려 퍼지고 있습니다. “그가 너로 말미암아 기쁨을 이기지 못하시며 너를 잠잠히 사랑하시며 너로 말미암아 즐거이 부르며 기뻐하시리라”(17절).

그러므로 우리는 긍휼과 확신을 가지고 복음을 전할 수 있으며, 특히 하나님을 떠나 너무 멀리 왔다고 느끼는 사람들에게 더 그렇습니다. 우리가 어디에 있고 무엇을 했고 얼마나 외롭고 잊혀지고 무가치하게 느껴지는지 상관없이 하나님은 우리를 사랑하시며 우리를 찾아오십니다. 모든 사람은 다 하나님의 손길이 닿는 곳에 있습니다.

WITHIN GOD’S REACH

Sentenced to fifty years in a maximum-security prison, a sixteen-year-old girl sat in solitary confinement. Due to her age, she remained separated from the other inmates. For nearly a year, she had no outside visitors. During an outreach and baptism held at the facility, the guards let a ministry leader enter the girl’s cell. She heard the gospel, surrendered her life to Jesus, and asked to be baptized. At first, the team considered using water bottles, but then the prison staff shut down the entire facility and led her to a portable baptismal pool. As God’s people prayed, she wept.

Though God promises to judge those who reject Him, He also extends mercy to those who repent. He restores and protects those who trust in His name (ZEPHANIAH 3:10-12). Repentance leads to redemption, because God Himself “has taken away” the punishment we deserve (V. 15). Hope resounds in the prophet Zephaniah’s words about God: “He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing” (V. 17).

So we can share the gospel with compassion and confidence, especially with those who may feel they’re too far from God. No matter where we are, what we’ve done, or how alone, forgotten, or unworthy we may feel, God loves and pursues us. Every person is within God’s reach.
