하나님께 받은 은혜로 드림

나는 스탠리가 사람들에게 베푸는 것을 보며 늘 놀랐습니다. 그는 교회의 노인들이나 동네 청소부들, 혹은 격려가 필요한 사람들에게 음식을 사주고 선물을 나누곤 했습니다.

놀라운 것은 스탠리가 부자도 아니고 투자에 능한 사람도 아닌데 그의 작은 투자가 놀라울 만큼 성공적이어서 그가 베품을 계속할 수 있었다는 점입니다. 누구든지 그에게 고맙다고 하면 그는 손으로 하늘을 가리키며 미소를 지었습니다. 그 모습은 마치 “이건 제가 아니라 하나님께서 주신 것이예요.”하는 말처럼 들렸습니다. 그는 다른 사람들을 도와주라고 하나님이 자기를 도우신다고 자주 말했습니다.

이것은 바울이 고린도후서 9장에서 말한 나눔의 모습입니다. 그는 고린도 교인들이 다른 성도들을 돕기 위해 준비하는 모습을 자랑스럽게 여기며(2절), 그들이 시작한 연보를 마무리하기 원했습니다(3절). 그러면서 바울은 성도들에게 기쁜 마음으로 풍성히 나누기를 권면하며, 하나님은 주는 자를 갚아 주실 뿐 아니라(6-7절) 사람들에게 더 많이 주셔서 더 많이 나누도록 축복하신다고 했습니다(8절).

하나님은 우리가 줄 수 없는 것을 억지로 기대하지 않으십니다(고린도후서 8:12). 오히려 하나님은 우리에게 돈이나 시간, 재능을 맡겨 주셔서 “모든 일에 항상 모든 것이 넉넉하여 모든 착한 일을 넘치게 하게 하려 하심이라”(9:8)고 하시며, 우리의 필요를 공급하셔서 “모든 일에 너그럽게 연보를 하게”(11절) 하십니다. 그러므로 우리는 믿음으로, 또 즐거운 마음으로 드릴 수가 있습니다(7절). 우리는 이미 받은 것에서 드리는 것이기 때문입니다. 그런 과정에서 우리는 하나님의 이름에 영광을 돌립니다(13절).

GIVING FROM GOD’S GIFTS

Stanley’s generosity never ceased to amaze me. He often bought meals and gifts for elderly church members, cleaners in his neighborhood, or anyone who needed cheering up. Equally amazing was that even though Stanley wasn’t wealthy or savvy at investing, his small investment did impressively well, enabling him to keep giving. Whenever someone thanked him, he’d point upwards and smile, as if to say, “It came from God, not me.” God, he often said, helped him to help others.

This was what Paul alluded to in 2 Corinthians 9 as he wrote about giving. Proud of the Corinthians’ readiness to help fellow believers (V. 2), he hoped to pick up a collection they had started (V. 3). Imploring them to give generously and cheerfully, he noted that God would not only reward those who gave (VV. 6-7) but also bless people so they could give even more (V. 8).

God doesn’t expect us to give what we’re unable to give (2 CORINTHIANS 8:12). Rather, He entrusts us with money, time, or talent to “abound in every good work” (9:8), and He supplies what we need so we “can be generous on every occasion” (V. 11). That’s why we can give in faith and with a cheerful heart (V. 7), knowing that we give only from what we’ve been given. In the process, we bring praise to God’s name (V. 13).

함께 나란히 섬기기

미시간주 첼시의 명소인 세렌디피티 서점에 확장이 필요했습니다. 주인은 바로 한 블록 떨어진 곳에 두 배 크기의 건물을 계약했습니다. 그녀는 책을 모두 상자에 담느라 며칠 동안 서점 문을 닫는 등 많은 시간을 보내지 않고, 빠르게 이전하고 싶었습니다. 그래서 주변 사람들에게 도움을 청했습니다. 무려 300명이 넘는 사람들이 왔습니다! 그들은 나란히 서서 인간 띠를 만들어 옆 사람에게 책을 계속 전달하는 방법으로 2시간도 안 되어 9,100권의 책을 옮겼습니다. 서점 주인은 “[이 서점은] 정말로 이 지역 사회의 일부이고, 주민들 모두가 자기들 서점이라고 생각해요.”라고 말했습니다. 그들은 모두 기쁘게, 함께 열심히 일했습니다.

페르시아 왕의 신임을 받던 술 관원 유대인 느헤미야는 예루살렘의 성벽이 무너졌다는 소식을 듣고 하나님의 인도를 구하며 부르짖었습니다(느헤미야 1:3-11). 이 성벽은 바벨론의 침략으로 기원전 587년에 파괴되었습니다. 느헤미야는 실태를 조사한 뒤, 지역 사회의 도움을 요청했습니다. 그는 유대 지도자들에게 “우리가 당한 곤경은 너희도 보고 있는 바라 예루살렘이 황폐(하였으니)... 자, 예루살렘 성을 건축하자”고 말했습니다(2:17). 느헤미야 3장은 지도자들과 시민들이 모두 나서 각자 자기의 집 바로 앞의 무너진 성벽 부분을 다시 세우는 모습을 설명합니다. 그들은 모두 나서서 일했습니다.

우리도 이와 같이 하나님의 인도하심과 능력 안에서 함께 섬기며 지역 사회에 선한 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다.

SERVING SIDE BY SIDE

Serendipity Bookstore, a popular spot in Chelsea, Michigan, needed to expand. The owner found a building twice the size just a block away. She wanted to make the move quickly instead of closing the store for days and boxing up all the books. So she requested help from the community. More than three hundred people showed up! They stood shoulder to shoulder, forming a human conveyor belt, and passed the books from one person to the next, moving 9,100 books in just under two hours. The owner said, “[The bookstore] is really a part of the community, and [the people] have ownership.” They all enthusiastically worked side by side.

When Nehemiah, a Jew who was the trusted cupbearer to the Persian king, learned that the wall surrounding Jerusalem lay in shambles, he cried out for God’s guidance (NEHEMIAH 1:3-11). The Babylonians had destroyed the walls in 587 bc. After investigating, Nehemiah recruited help from the community. He said to the Jewish leaders, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins . . . . Come, let us rebuild the wall” (2:17). Chapter 3 describes how leaders and citizens alike willingly repaired the section of the wall that was right in front of each one. They worked side by side.

We too can impact our community by serving together under God’s direction and in His strength.

하나님 능력에 힘입어

텅스텐은 상반되는 속성을 지닌 물질입니다. 어떤 순수 원소보다도 인장 강도가 높아서 잡아당겨 끊기가 매우 어렵지만, 미드 메탈 웹사이트에 의하면 “텅스텐은 충격 강도가 낮아서 충격을 받으면 부서지는 성질을 지닌 약한 금속입니다.” 가장 강한 천연 금속인 텅스텐이 또한 이렇게 약하고 부서지기 쉽다는 사실이 매우 흥미롭습니다.

인간에게도 이와 비슷한 점이 있습니다. 우리는 신체적으로 정신적으로 엄청난 힘을 발휘할 수 있지만, 타락하고 망가진 이 세상의 무게에 쉽게 무너지기도 합니다. 바울은 이를 직접 체험했습니다. 고린도후서 11장에서 그는 자신을 누르는 경험들을 설명합니다(23-29절). 그러나 하나님은 그에게 “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라”고 격려하셨습니다. 바울은 “그러므로 도리어 크게 기뻐함으로 나의 여러 약한 것들에 대하여 자랑하리니 이는 그리스도의 능력이 내게 머물게 하려 함이라” (고린도후서 12:9)고 다짐합니다.

DEPENDENT ON GOD’S STRENGTH

Tungsten is something of a paradox. It has the highest tensile strength of any pure element, making it extremely difficult to pull apart. But the Mead Metals website notes, “In terms of impact strength, tungsten is weak—it’s a brittle metal known to shatter on impact.” It’s fascinating that tungsten, the strongest natural metal, is also so weak and brittle.

Human beings display a similar characteristic. Though capable of great strength both physically and mentally, we’re easily crushed under the weight of this fallen, broken world. Paul experienced this personally. In 2 Corinthians 11, he described experiences that overwhelmed him (VV. 23-29). But God encouraged him: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul resolved, “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9).

Earlier in 2 Corinthians, Paul had written, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed” (4:8). There’s hope, even though the strongest child of God knows all too well that this world is simply too much for us. We’re happily dependent on the strength of His grace if we are to endure. May we, like Paul, embrace our weaknesses so God’s power can carry us through.

사랑의 계절

유명 조경 디자이너 피에트 아우돌프는 꽃이 피어 있지 않아도 아름다울 수 있다고 말합니다. 이 네덜란드 정원사의 디자인은 수상 경력에 어울리게 한겨울에도 눈부신 매력으로 사람들의 눈길을 사로잡습니다. “아름다움은 우리가 몰랐던 많은 것 안에 들어있습니다.” 어떤 사람들은 동의하지 않을 수도 있겠지만 아우돌프는 이렇게 말합니다. “내가 죽은[휴면 중인] 식물을 좋아한다고 말하면 금방 문제가 생깁니다. 사람들은 죽은 식물을 좋아하지 않기 때문이지요.”

식물의 생명 주기를 알아보는 아우돌프의 안목은 영적 원리를 떠올리게 합니다. 우리가 죄 가운데 죽어 있을 때에도 하나님은 여전히 우리를 사랑 하셨습니다. 바울 사도는 “우리가 아직 연약할 때에 기약대로 그리스도께서 경건하지 않은 자를 위하여 죽으셨다”(로마서 5:6)고 설명했습니다. 바울은 이어서 “우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에게 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨다”(8절)고 했습니다.

예수님은 결점이 있는 제자들을 택하셨습니다. 주님은 죄인으로 여겨지던 사람들과 식사를 함께 하셨습니다. 그리고 버림받은 사람들을 치유하셨습니다. 이처럼 아우돌프도 “식물의 꽃만이 아니라 그 속에 지닌 고유한 특성에 관심을 가졌”습니다. 그는 “첫 눈에 아름답지 않은 것 속에 있는” 아름다움을 봅니다.

SEASONS OF LOVE

Flowers don’t have to be in bloom to be beautiful, says famed landscape designer Piet Oudolf. Even in the dead of winter, the Dutch gardener’s award-winning designs are known for their stunning appeal. “Beauty is in so many things you wouldn’t think of,” Oudolf says, although some may disagree. “The moment you say I love plants that are dead [dormant],” he said, “then you have a problem because people don’t like dead plants.”

Oudolf’s appreciation of plants’ life cycles echoes a core spiritual principle: While we were dead in our sins, God still loved us. “You see,” explained the apostle Paul, “at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly” (ROMANS 5:6). Paul continued, “God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (V. 8).

Jesus chose disciples with flaws. He ate meals with known sinners. He healed outcasts. Oudolf, likewise, is “interested in plants not only for their flowers, but also for their personality”— seeing beauty “in things that, on first sight, are not beautiful.”

As bearers of God’s image, we show Him to the world in how we relate to Him and each other. Planted in His love, we’re anointed by our Father to bloom anew in Him—once-dead sinners showing His beauty to a world longing for a glimpse of Him.

전도할 준비

그 십 대 여학생은 물러서지 않았습니다. 클레어는 자기 고등학교에서 단체로 중독 재활시설을 방문했을 때 자기보다 훨씬 큰 20대 남자와 대화를 나누었습니다. 그들은 믿음에 대해 이야기했습니다.

클레어는 예수님의 복음을 분명하게 전했습니다. 남자는 자기의 매우 다른 영적 견해를 가지고 반박했습니다. 그러면서도 둘은 친근한 태도로 주고받으며 대화를 이어갔습니다. 마침내 그 젊은이는 클레어를 보며 말했습니다. “네 말이 맞아. 그 말에 반박할 수가 없네.”

그가 그 자리에서 예수님을 믿게 되지는 않았지만 한 알의 씨앗은 심어 졌습니다. 클레어는 그 젊은이가 그리스도를 영접하길 바랐지만, 그날 하나님께서 자기에게 명하셨던대로 했다는 것만으로 아쉬운 마음은 한결 가벼워졌습니다. “대답할 것을 항상 준비하라”(베드로전서 3:15)고 하신 말씀대로 클레어는 하나님의 구원의 계획을 사랑으로 전한 것입니다.

클레어는 복음을 부끄러워하지 않았습니다(로마서 1:16). 그녀는 “속에 있는 소망에 관한 이유를 묻는 자에게 대답할 것을 준비”(베드로전서 3:15)하고 있었습니다. 그리고 자신의 “말을 항상 은혜 가운데 하며”(골로새서 4:6) 올바른 영으로 대답해야 한다는 것을 알고 있었습니다.

하나님께서 다른 사람들에게 그리스도를 전하는 큰 특권을 우리에게 주셨습니다! 하나님으로부터 필요한 것을 공급받아 다른 사람들에게 복음을 전할 준비를 합시다.

BE PREPARED TO SHARE

The teenager stood her ground. While her high school group was visiting a home for people in rehab from addictions, Claire engaged in conversation with a twentysomething man who towered over her in size. They talked about faith.

Claire clearly presented the gospel of Jesus. He countered with his spiritual views, which were very different. Back and forth they went in a friendly give-and-take way. Finally, the young man looked at Claire and said, “You got me. I can’t argue with what you’re saying.”

Though he didn’t put his faith in Jesus, a seed had been planted. And while Claire would have loved for the young man to have received Christ, her disappointment was balanced by the reality that she’d done what God had called her to do that day: “Be prepared to give an answer” (1 PETER 3:15). She had lovingly shared God’s plan of salvation.

Claire wasn’t ashamed of the gospel (ROMANS 1:16). She was prepared to “give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have” (1 PETER 3:15). And she knew how to let her “conversation be . . . full of grace” so she would “know how to answer” (COLOSSIANS 4:6) the young man in the right spirit.

What a privilege God gives us to make Christ known to others! Let’s be ready to share with others as He provides what we need.

그리스도와 함께하는 우리의 미래

아빠의 평생 꿈은 스위스를 방문하는 것이었습니다. 그러던 아빠가 전두측두엽 치매 진단을 받자 엄마는 아빠가 아직 몸이 괜찮을 때 함께 여행을 가기로 했습니다. 엄마는 “어느 날 티틀리스 산 주변에 눈이 날릴 때” 아빠가 정말로 기뻐하는 모습을 보았다고 하면서 “그것은 꿈을 다 이룬 것 같은 기쁨이었다”고 했습니다. 하지만 나중에 아빠가 “그런데 여기가 어디야?”라고 물었을 때, 엄마는 눈물을 흘렸습니다.

아빠는 지금 스위스에 다녀온 것도 모르지만 엄마는 “거기 간 것은 참 잘한 일이었다”라고 했습니다. “적어도 한 순간이라도 아빠가 정신이 돌아와 행복해 하셨잖아.”

하나님은 우리가 다시는 기쁨을 빼앗기지 않을 때가 올 것이라고 확실히 말씀하십니다. 예수님 안에 있는 소망 때문에 우리는 죄와 사망에서 해방될 “새 하늘과 새 땅”을 기다릴 수 있습니다(요한계시록 21:1; 로마서 5:12). 그 완벽한 세상에서 하나님은 “모든 것을 새롭게”하실 것입니다(요한계시록 21:5). “모든 눈물을 그 눈에서 닦아주시니 다시는 사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니하리니 처음 것들이 다 지나갔음이러라”(4절). 우리가 지금 겪는 고난은 모두가 일시적인 것입니다. 하나님은 어느 날 “이전 것은 기억되거나 마음에 생각나지 아니할 것”이라고 약속하십니다(이사야 65:17). 그것은 영원히 ‘사라질’ 것입니다.

언젠가 우리가 하나님 앞에 가면(요한계시록 21:3) 나는 기쁨에 찬 우리 아빠의 얼굴을 볼 것입니다. 그때의 기쁨은 영원할 것입니다.

OUR FUTURE WITH CHRIST

Visiting Switzerland had been my dad’s lifelong dream. After his diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, my mom decided to go with him while he was still physically able. “One day, with the snow blowing around us on Mount Titlis,” she said, “I saw the profound joy in your father’s face. It was the joy of a dream come true.” Later, however, my mom’s tears flowed when my dad asked, “Where are we again?”

My dad may have forgotten he was in Switzerland, but “the visit was worth it,” my mom said. “At least for one moment, he knew, and he was happy.”

God reassures us of a time when joy will never be taken away from us again. Because of our hope in Jesus, we can look forward to “a new heaven and a new earth” (REVELATION 21:1), where we’ll be free from sin and death (ROMANS 5:12). In this perfect world, God will make “everything new” (REVELATION 21:5). “ ‘He will wipe every tear from [our] eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (V. 4). Whatever suffering we experience now is temporary. God promises that one day “the former things will not be remembered” (ISAIAH 65:17). They will forever be no more.

I know that one day, when we’re with God (REVELATION 21:3), I’ll see profound joy on Daddy’s face. This time, it will stay.

아빠의 평생 꿈은 스위스를 방문하는 것이었습니다. 그러던 아빠가 전두측두엽 치매 진단을 받자 엄마는 아빠가 아직 몸이 괜찮을 때 함께 여행을 가기로 했습니다. 엄마는 “어느 날 티틀리스 산 주변에 눈이 날릴 때” 아빠가 정말로 기뻐하는 모습을 보았다고 하면서 “그것은 꿈을 다 이룬 것 같은 기쁨이었다”고 했습니다. 하지만 나중에 아빠가 “그런데 여기가 어디야?”라고 물었을 때, 엄마는 눈물을 흘렸습니다.

아빠는 지금 스위스에 다녀온 것도 모르지만 엄마는 “거기 간 것은 참 잘한 일이었다”라고 했습니다. “적어도 한 순간이라도 아빠가 정신이 돌아와 행복해 하셨잖아.”

하나님은 우리가 다시는 기쁨을 빼앗기지 않을 때가 올 것이라고 확실히 말씀하십니다. 예수님 안에 있는 소망 때문에 우리는 죄와 사망에서 해방될 “새 하늘과 새 땅”을 기다릴 수 있습니다(요한계시록 21:1; 로마서 5:12). 그 완벽한 세상에서 하나님은 “모든 것을 새롭게”하실 것입니다(요한계시록 21:5). “모든 눈물을 그 눈에서 닦아주시니 다시는 사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니하리니 처음 것들이 다 지나갔음이러라”(4절). 우리가 지금 겪는 고난은 모두가 일시적인 것입니다. 하나님은 어느 날 “이전 것은 기억되거나 마음에 생각나지 아니할 것”이라고 약속하십니다(이사야 65:17). 그것은 영원히 ‘사라질’ 것입니다.

언젠가 우리가 하나님 앞에 가면(요한계시록 21:3) 나는 기쁨에 찬 우리 아빠의 얼굴을 볼 것입니다. 그때의 기쁨은 영원할 것입니다.

OUR FUTURE WITH CHRIST

Visiting Switzerland had been my dad’s lifelong dream. After his diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia, my mom decided to go with him while he was still physically able. “One day, with the snow blowing around us on Mount Titlis,” she said, “I saw the profound joy in your father’s face. It was the joy of a dream come true.” Later, however, my mom’s tears flowed when my dad asked, “Where are we again?”

My dad may have forgotten he was in Switzerland, but “the visit was worth it,” my mom said. “At least for one moment, he knew, and he was happy.”

God reassures us of a time when joy will never be taken away from us again. Because of our hope in Jesus, we can look forward to “a new heaven and a new earth” (REVELATION 21:1), where we’ll be free from sin and death (ROMANS 5:12). In this perfect world, God will make “everything new” (REVELATION 21:5). “ ‘He will wipe every tear from [our] eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (V. 4). Whatever suffering we experience now is temporary. God promises that one day “the former things will not be remembered” (ISAIAH 65:17). They will forever be no more.

I know that one day, when we’re with God (REVELATION 21:3), I’ll see profound joy on Daddy’s face. This time, it will stay.

하나님의 영광과 위엄

런던의 궁정연회장(Banqueting House)의 천장은 대단합니다. 이것은 찰스 1세 국왕이 자신과 가족의 통치를 영화롭게 하려고 의뢰하여 피터 폴 루벤스 경이 1629년부터 1634년까지 그린 것입니다. 한 그림에서는 미네르바 여신이 찰스 왕의 아버지인 제임스 1세 왕의 업적을 기리고 있습니다. 다른 그림에서는 제임스 왕이 독수리 날개에 실려 하늘로 옮겨지고 있습니다. 연회에 온 손님들은 천장을 올려다보면서 찰스 왕 부자는 정말로 신적인 존재라는 분명한 메시지를 받게 됩니다.

GOD’S GLORY AND MAJESTY

The ceiling of London’s Banqueting House is magnificent. Painted by Sir Peter Paul Rubens between 1629 and 1634, it was commissioned by King Charles I to glorify his family’s reign. In one painting, the goddess Minerva celebrates the achievements of Charles’ father, King James I. In another, James is carried to heaven on the wings of an eagle. Gazing up at the ceiling, banquet guests got a clear message: Kings like Charles and his father were virtually divine.

In the prophet Isaiah’s day, the king of Babylon felt similarly about himself. Here was a king who longed to “ascend to the heavens” and “sit . . . on the mount of assembly,” where the gods were thought to reign (ISAIAH 14:13). Instead, Isaiah prophesied that this king would fall (VV. 3-4), being “brought down to the realm of the dead” (V. 15) without even a tomb to be remembered by (VV. 18-19). Charles I met a similar fate. In an ironic twist, he was marched beneath the very ceiling depicting his supposed divinity before being executed outside Banqueting House in 1649.

It’s a sad fact that has repeated through time: Powerful people who claim divine glory for themselves will one day discover how human they are. For there is only one who is worthy of reigning from heaven, and all power, glory, and majesty are His alone (1 CHRONICLES 29:11).

서로 나누는 마음

멜라니에게 두통이 처음 생겼을 때 의사들이 뇌하수체에서 양성 종양을 발견했습니다. 자두 크기만한 종양을 2003년에 수술로 제거했고, 2006년에 재발해 다시 제거했습니다. 그러다 2017년에 세 번째로 재발했을 때에는 방사선 치료를 받았고 이로 인해 머리가 빠졌습니다. 그러자 멜라니의 스물일곱 살 난 아들 매트는 어머니에게 가발을 만들어 주려고 자기 머리를 기르기로 했습니다.

매트의 이타적 사랑의 행동은 한 사람이 자기의 능력과 자원으로 다른 사람과 공동체의 필요를 채울 수 있음을 보여줍니다. 바울은 빌립보 교인들에게 보낸 편지에서 서로 나누는 마음의 아름다움을 이렇게 썼습니다. 바울의 “괴로움에” 동참했던 빌립보의 성도들은 그가 “궁핍에 처했을 때 한 번뿐 아니라 두 번이나” 쓸 것을 보냈습니다”(빌립보서 4:14, 16). 선물을 받은 바울은 하나님께서 자신의 필요를 충분히 채워주신 것을 감사했습니다.

RECIPROCAL GENEROSITY

When Melanie began having regular headaches, her doctors discovered she had a benign tumor in her pituitary gland. The tumor was about the size of a plum and was surgically removed in 2003 and again in 2006 when it recurred. Then in 2017, when it came back a third time, Melanie underwent radiation treatment instead, which caused her to lose her hair. Her twenty-seven-year-old son, Matt, decided to grow out his own hair to make a wig for her.

Matt’s selfless, loving act illustrates how one person’s abilities and resources can supply the needs of another person or group. Paul highlights the beauty of such reciprocal generosity in his letter to the Philippians. The believers in Philippi had shared in his “troubles” and “sent . . . aid more than once when [he] was in need” (PHILIPPIANS 4:14, 16). Having received their gifts, Paul recognized that God had provided amply for his needs.

Our willingness to share with one another is often the conduit of God’s provision in our lives. Sometimes we’re in a position to give of our time, talent, or treasure; other times we’re in need ourselves and must rely on the support of another. Through His Spirit working in us, our gifts are “pleasing to God” and a manifestation of our shared life in the body of Christ (V. 18).

우리가 누구인지 기억하기

한 식당 직원이 쓰레기통 옆에서 의식을 잃은 남자를 발견했습니다. 햇볕에 심하게 탄 그 사람은 개미에게 물리고 둔기에 맞은 자국도 있었습니다. 그는 자기가 누구인지도 기억을 못했습니다. 나중에 스스로를 “벤자민 카일”이라고 이름지은 그는 이런 상태로 10년을 넘게 살았습니다. 일도 못 하고 복지 혜택도 못 받는 그는 무엇보다 자신의 과거를 되찾을 수가 없었습니다. 그러던 중 그를 모르는 어느 단체에서 유전자 검사와 추적조사를 통해 그의 신분을 알아내는 일에 나섬으로 그의 치유가 시작되었습니다. 그는 “저에게도 살아온 과거가 있습니다. 그냥 하늘에서 뚝 떨어진 건 아니지요.”라고 했습니다.

REMEMBERING WHO WE ARE

A restaurant employee discovered an unconscious man beside a dumpster. He was sunburned, bitten by ants, and showed signs of blunt force trauma. He had no memory of who he was. The man, later self-named “Benjamin Kyle,” lived in limbo for more than a decade. He couldn’t work, collect benefits, or even reclaim his past. His healing began when a community of strangers helped him rediscover his identity through genetic testing and investigation. “I have a history,” he said. “I’m not just some stranger that materialized out of thin air.”

The story of Ruth in the Bible can also be seen as one of rediscovered belonging. After losing her husband and leaving her homeland, she chose to bind herself to her mother-in-law Naomi and her people. She said, “Where you go I will go . . . . Your people will be my people and your God my God” (RUTH 1:16). Ruth connected her identity and destiny to that of Naomi and her people in life and in death. She was “determined to go with her” (V. 18)—prioritizing community over clarity, belonging over certainty. In doing so, she stepped into God’s redemptive story and is remembered forever as part of the lineage of Christ (4:18-22; MATTHEW 1:3-5).

When we as believers in Jesus forget who we are—or when life’s pain leaves us disoriented—God often uses community to reconnect us with our most authentic identity. In Him we’re beloved, chosen, and known.
