도우시는 하나님

아홉 살 아들을 캠프에 차로 데려다 주던 어머니가 길을 잘못 들어 캘리포니아 시에라 네바다 산맥의 외딴 숲길에서 고립되고 말았습니다. 오지였던 탓에 GPS와 휴대전화가 작동을 멈췄고, 그들은 돌아갈 길을 찾을 수 없었습니다. 24시간 넘게 고립되어 차 안에서 하룻밤을 지내고, 절박해진 그들은 걷기 시작했습니다. 그들은 길을 따라 걸으며 다음과 같은 쪽지들을 남겼습니다. “도와주세요. 저와 아들이 신호가 터지지 않는 곳에 고립되어 911에 전화를 걸 수 없습니다.” 모자가 캠프에 제시간에 도착하지 않자 수색 구조대가 출동하여 차와 쪽지를 발견했고, 마침내 모자를 찾아냈습니다.

이스라엘 백성들은 자신들을 노예로 삼아 가혹하게 학대하는 애굽 사람들로부터 벗어나게 해달라고 하나님께 간절히 부르짖었습니다(출애굽기 1:11-12). 애굽 사람들은 그들을 무자비하게 부리며 “어려운 노동으로 그들의 생활을 괴롭게” 했습니다(13-14절). 이스라엘 백성들은 과연 이런 잔인한 학대 속에서 살아남을 수 있을지 의문이 들었을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 그들의 부르짖음을 들으셨고, 그들을 구원하기 위해 모세를 세우셨습니다(3:4-10). 결국 하나님은 모세를 통해 그들을 구조하고 애굽에서 이스라엘 백성들을 이끌어 내신 것입니다(출애굽기 14-15장 참조).

우리가 길을 잃고 방황하거나 부당한 대우를 받을 때에도, 하나님은 언제나 가까이 계시며 우리의 부르짖음에 귀 기울이십니다. 하나님의 때에, 하나님의 방법으로, 그분은 우리에게 필요한 도움을 보내주실 것입니다.

THE GOD WHO HELPS

While driving her nine-year-old son to camp, a mother got lost after taking a wrong turn and getting the car stuck on a rural forest road in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. Her GPS and phone quit working because of the remote area, so they were unable to retrace their way back. In desperation after being stranded for more than twenty-four hours and sleeping in their car overnight, they began to walk. They left a trail of notes along the way: “HELP. Me and my son are stranded with no service and can’t call 9-1-1.” Because they didn’t arrive at the camp on time, search-and-rescue teams went out looking. They discovered the car, the notes, and then quickly found them.

The Israelites desperately cried out to God for help because they were being severely mistreated by the Egyptians, who had enslaved them (EXODUS 1:11-12). Working them ruthlessly, “they made their lives bitter with harsh labor” (VV. 13-14). The Israelites must have wondered if they’d even survive the cruelty. But God heard their cries and raised up Moses to deliver them (3:4-10). Eventually God used him to rescue them and lead them out of Egypt (SEE EXODUS 14-15).

Whether we’re feeling lost or mistreated, God is always near and His ear is open to our cries. In His time and in His way, He’ll send the help we need.

위험한 착각

내가 수업을 하던 강의실 창문에서 ‘쿵’ 하는 큰 소리가 나서 학생들이 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 그러더니 또 한 번 ‘쿵’ 소리가 났습니다! 새 한 마리가 창문으로 날아와 부딪히고 튕겨 나갔다가, 또 다시 달려들어 충돌하여 난 소리였습니다. 나중에 자료를 찾아보니, 미국에서만 매년 10억 마리 이상의 새들이 창문에 부딪혀 죽는다고 합니다. 이런 충돌은 새들이 유리창에 비친 식물의 모습을 보고 그것을 먹이나 둥지 재료로 잘못 알고 달려들 때 발생하며, 새들은 간혹 유리창에 비춰진 자신의 모습을 물리쳐야 할 다른 새로 착각하기도 한답니다. 새들은 자신이 똑똑히 보고 있다고 확신하지만, 사실은 착각에 빠진 것입니다.

우리가 언제나 진실을 알아볼 수 있다고, 즉 우리 삶에 대해 명시적인 통찰력을 갖추고 있다고 생각하는 것은 위험합니다. 그러나 우리는 위험한 착각에 빠져 있어서, 우리의 가장 뛰어난 지혜조차, 그것에만 의지하면 결국 비극을 낳는다는 사실을 반복해서 보여줍니다. 잠언은 “어떤 길은 사람이 보기에 바르나 필경은 사망의 길이니라”(16:25)고 말씀합니다. 우리는 실체를 보고 있다고 믿지만, 너무나 자주 착각에 빠지곤 합니다. 우리의 아주 예리한 통찰력으로도 잘못 보는 수가 많습니다. 가장 명확한 우리의 시야조차 여전히 흐릿하고 불완전하여 종종 파멸을 초래합니다.

그렇기 때문에 우리에게는 하나님의 지혜가 필요합니다(20-21절). 진리를 밝히 드러내시고 참된 길로 인도하실 분은 하나님입니다. 우리를 위험한 착각에 빠지지 않고 온전함과 생명의 길로 인도해 주실 하나님이 필요합니다.

DEADLY CONFUSION

A loud thump came from a window in the classroom where I was teaching and startled the students. Then another thump! A bird had flown headlong into the glass and bounced off, only to make another run for yet another crash. Later, I read that more than a billion birds die each year from hitting windows in the United States alone. Collisions happen when they catch reflections of vegetation in the window and go after them, convinced they see food or nesting material. Sometimes they also catch their own reflection and think another bird needs to be fended off. They’re sure they see clearly, but they’re confused.

It’s dangerous to think that we always see what’s true—that we possess internal clarity about our lives. However, we suffer from a deadly confusion and repeatedly demonstrate that even our best wisdom—left to itself—eventually yields misery. “There is a way that appears to be right,” Proverbs says, “but in the end it leads to death” (16:25). We think we see what’s real, but too often we’re confused. Even our keenest insight is riddled with misperceptions. Even our clearest vision is still cloudy, imperfect, and often ruinous.

That’s why we need God’s wisdom (VV. 20-21). We need Him to illuminate the truth and guide us into what’s real. We need Him to lead us out of our deadly confusion and into wholeness and life.

기쁨으로 향하는 인내

우리 집 현관으로 올라가는 벽돌 계단 한구석에 진홍색 베고니아 한 송이가 강인하게 자리잡고 있습니다. 우리가 심지 않았는데, 화분 걸이에서 씨앗이 떨어져 자란 것 같았습니다. 하지만 우리 부부는 그것을 그대로 두었습니다. 해마다 피는 그 꽃은 아내와 나에게 인내는 아름다운 것이라는 사실을 즐겁게 일깨워 줍니다.

야고보는 특히 예수님을 믿는 신앙 때문에 반대에 부딪힌 이들에게 인내 에 관한 더욱 아름다운 격려를 전합니다. “여러 가지 시험을 당하거든 온전히 기쁘게 여기라 이는 너희 믿음의 시련이 인내를 만들어 내는 줄 너희가 앎이라” (야고보서 1:2-3).

‘온전히 기쁘게 여기라고요?’ 우리는 이 말씀 앞에서 주저할 수도 있지만, 야고보 사도는 하나님께서 모든 것 위에 계시며 심지어 어려운 상황 속에서도 선을 이루실 수 있다는 진리를 바라보고 있습니다. 야고보는 이렇게 결론을 맺습니다. “시험을 참는 자는 복이 있나니 이는... 주께서 자기를 사랑하는 자들에게 약속하신 생명의 면류관을 얻을 것이기 때문이라”(12절). 여기서 ‘복이 있다’는 단어는 예수님께서 산상수훈(마태복음 5:3-12)에서 사용하신 단어와 같은 것으로, 여러 의미 중에서도 ‘행복하다’는 뜻을 담고 있습니다.

영적 싸움이나 인생의 고된 시련 등 우리가 무엇을 마주하든지, 하나님은 그분의 사랑 안에서 우리를 붙들어 주실 것이며, 언젠가 그분의 기쁨이라는 아름다움으로 우리에게 자비로운 상을 주실 것입니다.

PERSEVERING INTO JOY

Nestled in a corner of the brick steps leading up to our front door is a hardy little scarlet begonia. We didn’t plant it—it must have grown there from a seed that fell out of a hang- oJAMES 1:2-12 SATURDAY | SEPTEMBER 12 Blessed is the one who perseveres. [ JAMES 1:12 ] ing basket. But we’ve let it remain. Year after year it’s a cheerful reminder to my wife and me that perseverance is a beautiful thing.

James offers even more beautiful encouragement to persevere, especially to those facing opposition for their faith in Jesus: “Consider it pure joy . . . whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance” (JAMES 1:2-3).

Pure joy? We balk at those words, but the apostle is looking forward to the truth that God is over everything and is able to bring good out of even difficult circumstances. James completes the thought: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because . . . that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him” (V. 12). The word blessed is the same word Jesus uses in the Beatitudes (MATTHEW 5:3-12), and it carries the meaning—among other things—of “happy.”

Whatever we face, including spiritual battles and life’s hard challenges, God will sustain us in His love and will one day mercifully reward us with the beauty of His joy.

하나님의 위로

쏟아져 내리는 물소리가 들리자 뉴욕의 9/11 메모리얼 풀(Memorial Pools)에 도착한 것을 알았습니다. 2001년의 그 비극이 가져다 준 슬픔과 고통에 압도당할까 봐 그 동안 방문을 피해 왔던 곳입니다. 쌍둥이 빌딩이 서 있던 자리에 조성된 두 개의 커다란 추모 연못 주위를 걸었습니다. 벽면에 새겨진 희생자들의 이름을 바라보는 것은 깊은 울림을 주었습니다. 어떤 이름 위에는 사랑하는 이들이 두고 간 장미꽃이 놓여 있었습니다.

9/11 당일 아침, 나는 맨해튼에 있었지만 다행히 세계무역센터 근처에 있지 않았습니다. 그럼에도 나 같은 뉴욕 토박이에게 그 비극은 너무도 가슴 깊이 와 닿았습니다. 마침내 그라운드 제로(Ground Zero, 세계무역센터가 무너진 자리) 에 가게 되었지만, 나는 슬픔이나 두려움에 압도되지는 않았습니다. 오히려 그곳에 서서 마음에 평안을 느끼며 하나님의 지속적인 은혜를 기억했습니다. 그 평안은 우리를 위로할 줄 아시는 하나님께서 주신 선물이었습니다.

시편을 읽다 보면, 다윗 또한 슬픔과 두려움, 고통을 경험하면서 하나님의 위로를 받았음을 보게 됩니다. 시편 30편에서 다윗은 이렇게 썼습니다. “내가 주께 부르짖으매 나를 고치셨나이다”(2절). 또 “저녁에는 울음이 깃들일지라도 아침에는 기쁨이 오리로다”(5절). 하나님은 다윗의 “슬픔이 변하여 내게 춤이 되게 하시며”, “나의 베옷을 벗기고 기쁨으로 띠 띠우셨습니다”고 했습니다 (11절).

우리가 슬픔이나 상실, 혹은 고통으로 마음이 무거울 때, 마음이 상한 자에게 가까이하시는 모든 위로의 하나님께로 나아갑시다. 그리고 다윗처럼 그분께 감사를 드립시다. “여호와 나의 하나님이여 내가 주께 영원히 감사하리이다”(12절).

DIVINE COMFORT

The sound of the cascading water confirmed that I’d arrived at the 9/11 Memorial Pools in New York City, a place I’d avoided visiting for fear of being overwhelmed by sadness and grief from what took place there that tragic day in 2001. I walked around the two large reflection pools located where the Twin Towers once stood. It was deeply moving to see all the names of those who died etched on the walls—some with roses placed on them by loved ones.

I was in Manhattan on the morning of 9/11 but thankfully not near the World Trade Center. Still, as a native New Yorker, the tragedy hit too close to home. I was finally at Ground Zero, yet I wasn’t overcome by sorrow or fear. I felt peace as I stood there and recalled God’s sustaining grace. That peace was a gift from the God who knows how to comfort us.

As we read the Psalms, we see that David experienced sorrow, fear, and grief as well as divine comfort. In Psalm 30, he writes, “I called to you for help, and you healed me” (V. 2). “Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning” (V. 5). God turned David’s “wailing into dancing” and “removed [his] sackcloth and clothed [him] with joy” (V. 11).

When we’re feeling overwhelmed with sorrow, loss, or pain, let’s turn to the God of all comfort, who is close to the brokenhearted, and give thanks to Him as David did: “Lord my God, I will praise you forever” (v. 12).

관대한 삶의 유산

외할아버지 할머니와 같은 주에 살지는 않았지만, 나는 그분들에 대해 그토록 잘 알 수 있어서 정말 감사합니다. 그분들은 우리를 보러 자주 콜로라도 주에 오셨고, 우리도 캘리포니아 주에 가서 그분들을 뵙는 게 즐거웠습니다. 나와 동생이 성인이 되자, 할아버지 할머니와의 대화는 어린 시절의 장난스러운 얘깃거리에서 벗어나 재정에 관한 진지한 대화로 확대되었습니다. 그분들은 살아 계시는 동안에는 외손녀인 우리에게 아낌없이 나누어주고 싶어하시지만, 돌아가신 후에는 그들 재산 대부분을 자선 단체에 기부할 계획이라고 설명해 주셨습니다.

실제로 외조부모님은 평생 동안 우리에게 금전적인 면에서 매우 관대하셨습니다. 그분들이 돌아가셨을 때, 평소 말씀하셨던대로 남은 재산이 다른 사람들을 위해 사용되는 것을 보며 나는 진심으로 자랑스러웠습니다. “선인은 그 산업을 자자손손에게 끼친다”는 잠언 13장 22절의 말씀과 그분들의 삶의 본보기를 비교해 보면서, 그분들이 나에게 남겨준 관대한 유산을 더 넓은 관점에서 바라봅니다. 우리 자신만을 위해 이기적으로 살 것이 아니라, 우리 뒤에 올 세대를 돌보아야 한다고 생각하게 된 것입니다.

우리 모두가 다음 세대에게 물려줄 재정적인 부를 가진 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 시간과 관심뿐일지라도 우리가 가진 자원으로 다른 사람들에게 관대하게 베풀며 살기로 선택할 때, 우리의 자녀들(그리고 그들의 자녀들)은 귀한 유산인 ‘관대한 삶의 유산’을 받게 됩니다. 우리의 필요를 하나님께 의지할 때, 우리의 믿음과 자원을 함꼐 나눌 수 있게 됩니다.

LEGACY OF GENEROSITY

Though we didn’t live in the same state as my maternal grandparents, I’m grateful to have known them as well as I did. They traveled regularly to Colorado to see us, and we enjoyed visits with them in California. As my sister and I became adults, our conversations with our grandparents expanded from playful childhood topics to include more serious discussion of finances. They explained to us that they wanted to share their resources with us while they were alive but that most of their estate would be given to charity at their passing.

My grandparents were, indeed, quite generous to us over their lifetimes. When they died, I was genuinely proud to see their remaining resources given to others. When I compare their real-life example with the words recorded in Proverbs 13:22, that “a good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children,” I see their legacy to me from a broader perspective. We aren’t to live selfishly but instead care for those coming after us.

We won’t all have financial wealth to pass on to future generations. Yet in choosing to live generously toward others with whatever resources we have, even if just time and attention, our children (and theirs) receive a precious inheritance: a legacy of generosity. As we depend on God for our needs, we’re able to share both our faith and our resources with others.

하나님의 공개된 초청장

친한 친구의 결혼식을 앞두고, 우리는 피로연에 참석할 200명의 하객을 위해 식탁을 정성껏 준비했습니다. 기쁜 기대감으로 몇 시간 동안 냅킨을 접고, 식기를 세팅하고, 식탁보를 팽팽하게 펴고, 꽃으로 장식했습니다. 그 공을 들인 후, 하객이 도착해 그 자리를 즐기기를 바랬습니다! 그런데, 많은 자리가 비어 있는 것을 보고 우리는 몹시 실망했습니다.

예수님은 바리새인들과 함께 식사하시며 이와 비슷한 이야기를 들려 주셨습니다(누가복음 14:15-20). 어떤 사람이 많은 사람을 위해 사랑으로 큰 잔치를 베풀었으나, 초청받은 이들은 구차한 핑계를 대며 대부분 참석하지 않았습니다. 주인은 그들의 거절에 분노했습니다. 그는 사회에서 소외된 이들, 곧 “가난한 자들과 몸 불편한 자들과 맹인들과 저는 자들”(21절)에게 초청의 범위를 넓혔습니다. 그래도 자리가 남자, 그의 종들은 더 멀리 나가서 사람들 을 “강권하여 데려다가”(23절) 집을 채웠습니다.

이 비유는 하나님께서 택하신 백성 중 많은 이들이 예수님을 메시아로 받아들이지 않고, 하나님 나라로의 초청을 거절한 것을 떠올려 줍니다(요한복음 1:11). 그들의 거절에도 불구하고 세상을 구원하시려는 하나님의 계획을 이어가기 위해, 예수님은 유대인이 아닌 이방인들에게도 초청의 문을 여셨습니다. 세상이 그들을 가치 있게 여기든 말든 상관없이, 믿음으로 예수님을 영접하는 모든 사람들은 하나님 나라의 잔치에 환영을 받습니다. 이 초청은 오늘도 여전히 열려 있습니다.

GOD’S OPEN INVITATION

Before my close friend’s wedding, we meticulously set the table for two hundred guests at the reception. With joyful anticipation we spent hours folding napkins, aligning cutlery, straightening tablecloths, and arranging flowers. After putting in all that work, we couldn’t wait for guests to arrive and enjoy it! But when many seats remained empty, we were sorely disappointed.

Jesus shared a similar story with some Pharisees as they ate together (LUKE 14:15-20). He described a man who lovingly planned a great banquet for many people, but few attended and gave flimsy excuses. The man was angry at their rejection. He extended his invitation to society’s outcasts, “the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame” (V. 21). When there was still room, his servants went even further abroad to “compel [others] to come in” (V. 23).

This parable reminds us that many of God’s chosen people refused Jesus as their Messiah and rebuffed His invitation into His kingdom (JOHN 1:11). To continue God’s plan to save the world despite their rejection, He opened His invitation to the gentiles, people not of Jewish heritage. All who receive Jesus by faith are welcome to God’s kingdom banquet, regardless of whether the world thinks they’re worthy. The invitation is still open today.

놀라운 사귐

레이첼은 3년 동안 “여러 교회를 옮겨 다닌” 끝에 전통적인 교회에서는 찾아볼 수 없었던 성경 공부 모임인 이 공동체를 찾게 되었습니다. 레이첼은 청각 장애인입니다. 전 세계적으로 많은 청각 장애인들이 예배를 드리는데 비슷한 어려움을 겪고 있습니다. 그가 찾은 가정 교회는 유튜브로 청각 장애인 예배를 시청하고, 그 가르침을 서로 나눈 뒤 함께 식사를 하면서 공동체 의식을 다지고 있습니다. 이 소그룹은 레이첼이 갈망하던 성령 께서 인도하시는 교회의 진정한 가족과 같은 모습을 제공해 주었습니다.

바울 사도는 교회가 어떻게 하나의 공동체로 만들어지는지 설명합니다. 그것은 바로 성령의 교제입니다. 바울은 감옥에서 빌립보 교회에 보낸 편지에서 성령의 교제를 통한 연합을 강조했습니다. 그의 소망 중의 하나는 자신이 세우고 사랑했던 그 교회 안에 영적인 연합을 도모하는 것이었습니다.

WHAT A FELLOWSHIP

Rachel “church hopped” for three years before finding a Bible study group that provided what she couldn’t find in a traditional church—community. Rachel is Deaf. Around the world, many Deaf people face similar worship challenges. Her house church nurtures community by watching a Deaf church service on YouTube, discussing the teaching with each other, and then sharing a meal. The small group provides the Spirit-led church family Rachel craves.

The apostle Paul explains what makes a church a community: the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Writing from prison, he urged this connection to the church at Philippi. His hope, in part, was to encourage spiritual unity in a congregation he’d formed and loved.

“Stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one,” Paul urged (PHILIPPIANS 1:27). He added, “If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, . . . then make my joy complete by being like-minded” (2:1-2).

So don’t be selfish, he said, “not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (VV. 3-4). Those wise words can guide all church families. By the power of God’s Holy Spirit, our communities can serve Him in harmonious fellowship with each other.

하나님의 사랑 가득한 시선

아내 수와 나는 미시간주의 두 반도를 잇는 매키낵 다리의 5마일(약 8km) 구간을 막 걸어서 완주했습니다. 미국에서 매년 노동절에 열리는 이 행사는 우리 주에서 1958년부터 이어져 온 전통입니다. 우리는 잠시 쉬려고 공원 벤치에 앉았습니다. 어떤 남자 분도 숨을 돌리려고 우리 옆에 앉았는데, 곧이어 그분의 아내와 다 큰 딸도 합류했습니다. 우리는 이 가족이 우리처럼 예수님을 믿는 신자들이며, 몇 년 전 우리가 겪었던 것과 똑같이 십대 딸을 잃은 아픔이 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

우리는 지난 세월 동안 하나님께서 어떻게 우리를 붙드시고 힘과 믿음을 주셨는지 함께 나눌 수 있었습니다. 이날 걷기에 참가한 33,000명 중에 우리의 마음을 이해해 주는 가족을 만났다는 사실이 정말 놀라웠습니다.

수많은 인파 속에서 비슷한 사연을 가진 두 가족이 함께하게 된 것은 하나님께서 시편 32편에서 다윗 왕에게 하신 말씀이 있었기에 가능한 일처럼 느껴집니다. 다윗이 보호와 구원에 대해 하나님께 감사를 표현했을 때, 하나님으로부터 이런 격려의 말씀을 들었습니다. “내가 네 갈 길을 가르쳐 보이고 너를 주목하여 훈계하리로다”(8절).

하나님은 그분의 자녀들을 지켜 보시며, 그들이 서로를 필요로 하기 때문에 만나게 하십니다. 이것은 “여호와를 신뢰하는 자에게는 인자하심이 두르리로다”(10절)라는 말씀의 또 다른 예문입니다.

GOD’S LOVING EYE

My wife, Sue, and I had just finished walking five miles across the Mackinac Bridge, which links Michigan’s two peninsulas. This annual Labor Day event in the United States is a tradition in our state dating back to 1958. We grabbed a seat on a park bench to rest. A man sat down next to us to catch his breath as well. Soon his wife and adult daughter joined him, and we learned that their family—also believers in Jesus—had suffered through the death of a teenage girl just as we did many years ago.

Together we were able to share how God has sustained us and given us strength and faith through the years. It was amazing to think that among the 33,000 walkers that day, we found a family that understood our hearts.

Two families with similar stories ending up together in a sea of people. It sounds a little like something that can happen only because of what God told King David in Psalm 32. After David expressed his appreciation to God for protection and deliverance, he got this encouraging word from Him: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye” (V. 8 NKJV).

God watches over His children, and He brings them together because they need each other. It’s another indication that “the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him” (V. 10).

일본에서 유학 중이던 스물일곱 살 난 학생이 후지산에 올라갔다가 일주일 사이에 두 번이나 구조되는 일이 있었습니다! 첫 번째 등반 당시 위험한 기상 조건 때문에 헬리콥터로 구조된 후, 그는 휴대전화와 다른 소지품들을 두고 왔다는 사실을 깨닫고는 나흘 뒤에 경고를 무시하고 다시 산에 올랐다가 이번에는 고산병 증세로 또다시 구조되었습니다. 이 이야기는 매우 드문 사례일 뿐만 아니라, 위험하다는 것을 알면서도 다시 그곳으로 갔다는 점 때문에 큰 화제가 되었습니다.

이 이야기는 우리의 영적 현실에서도 나타납니다. 우리는 종종 하나님이 우리를 건져 주신 그 위험한 곳으로 다시 돌아가려는 경향이 있습니다. 예수님의 동생 유다는 그의 짧은 서신서에서 비슷한 영적 긴장감을 담아냈습니다. 그는 거짓 교사들과 도덕적 타협으로 위협받는 교회를 향해 쓴 글에서, 신자들에게 자기 자신뿐만 아니라 타인을 위해서도 “믿음의 도를 위하여 힘써 싸우라”(1:3)고 촉구합니다. 유다는 그들에게 방황하는 성도들을 거짓 교사들로부터 보호하는 적극적인 역할을 맡아 그들을 “불에서 끌어내어”(23절) 구원하라고 도전합니다. 예수님을 믿는 사람으로서, 우리는 다른 이들이 넘어지고 실패하는 모습을 그저 물러서서 방관할 수 없습니다.

CONTENDING FOR THE FAITH

A twenty-seven-year-old student studying in Japan had to be rescued from Mount Fuji twice in one week! After being airlifted during his first climb due to dangerous conditions, he realized he’d left his phone and other belongings behind. Four days later, ignoring warnings, he returned to the mountain, only to need to be rescued again—this time suffering from altitude sickness. His story made headlines for its rarity but also because he’d knowingly trekked back into danger.

This account mirrors a spiritual reality—we often tend to head back to what God has rescued us from. Jude captures this tension in his little letter. Written to a church threatened by false teachers and moral compromises, he exhorted believers “to contend for the faith” (1:3), not just for themselves but for others too. Jude challenged them to snatch others “from the fire” (V. 23)—taking an active role in shielding struggling believers from false teachers. As believers in Jesus, we can’t simply stand back and watch others flounder and fail.

Today, God is calling us to rescue others and to resist returning to the place we were rescued from. His grace will rescue us more than once, but it also calls us to live like we’ve already been rescued. Through God’s strength, let’s contend for the faith and help others be built up in the “most holy faith” (V. 20).

하나님께서 우리의 눈을 밝히실 때

13세기 프랑스에서 내려오는 전설입니다. 어떤 기사가 어린 아들을 그레이하운드 사냥개 기네포르에게 맡기고 외출했습니다. 기사가 돌아와 보니 집안은 난장판이었고, 요람은 뒤집혀 있었으며 아들은 보이지 않는데 개의 입이 피로 물들어 있었습니다. 개가 아들을 해쳤다고 생각한 기사는 그 자리에서 개를 죽였습니다. 그러나 잠시 후, 기사는 개에게 물려 죽은 커다란 뱀과 요람 아래에 무사히 살아있는 아들을 발견하게 됩니다. 기네포르가 아기의 생명을 구했던 것입니다. 이 개의 영웅적인 행동과 억울한 죽음은 사람들에게 큰 감동을 주었고, 사람들은 잘못된 방식으로 기네포르를 성인처럼 숭배하기까지 했습니다.

성경에도 이와 비슷하게 주인을 보호하려다 부당하게 매를 맞은 동물의 이야기가 기록되어 있습니다. 예언자 발람이 모압 왕의 부탁을 받고 하나님의 백성을 저주하러 가는 길에 일어난 일입니다(민수기 22:4-6). 발람이 길을 갈 때, “칼을 빼어 손에 들고”(23절) 서 있는 여호와의 사자가 앞을 가로막았습니다. 위험을 감지한 발람의 나귀는 두 번이나 천사를 피했지만, 그 대가로 매질을 당한 것입니다(23, 25절). 나귀가 더 이상 천사를 피할 수 없게 되자 그 자리에 엎드려 버렸고, 발람은 또 다시 나귀를 때렸습니다(26-27절).

마침내 하나님께서 나귀의 입을 여셔서 스스로를 변호하게 하셨고(29-30 절), 그제야 발람의 눈을 밝히셔서 천사를 보게 하시고 하나님의 지시에 따르게 하셨습니다(31-32절).

동물이 우리에게 대꾸하는 것을 듣게 될 일은 없겠지만, 하나님은 여전히 예상치 못한 방식으로 우리의 눈을 밝히실 수 있습니다. 그런 일이 일어날 때, 기꺼이 그에 따를 준비를 합시다.

WHEN GOD OPENS OUR EYES

In thirteenth-century France, legend has it that a knight left his baby boy at home guarded by his greyhound dog Guinefort. The knight returned to find chaos—the crib overturned, his son nowhere to be seen, and his hound’s mouth covered in blood. Assuming the dog had harmed his son, he killed it. Afterward, he found the body of a large snake covered in dog bites—and his son unharmed under the cradle. Guinefort had saved the baby’s life. The dog’s heroism and unjust fate so moved people that they misguidedly revered Guinefort as a saint.

Scripture records a similar incident, in which an animal was unjustly punished for protecting its owner. The prophet Balaam had been hired by the Moabite king to curse God’s people (NUMBERS 22:4-6). On Balaam’s journey, an “angel of the Lord . . . with a drawn sword” (V. 23) blocked his path. Balaam’s donkey, seeing the danger, avoided the angel twice—only to be beaten for his efforts (VV. 23, 25). When the donkey could no longer evade the angel, he refused to move and was again punished (VV. 26-27).

Finally, God enabled the donkey to speak and defend itself (VV. 29-30), and then He opened Balaam’s eyes to see the angel and heed God’s instructions (V. 31-32).

We’re not likely to hear an animal talk back to us anytime soon, but God can still open our eyes in unexpected ways. When that happens, let’s be prepared to listen.
