하나님 안에 있는 소망

파블로는 알코올 중독으로 어머니를 학대하던 아버지 때문에 십대에 집을 나갔습니다. 그는 삼촌 집에 지내면서 고등학교를 졸업하고 결혼 하여 세 아이를 두었습니다. 그러나 안타깝게도 파블로는 전에 자신이 피해서 나왔던 그 파괴적인 행위를 따라 하기 시작했습니다. 그의 알코올 중독과 행실로 가정이 무너지기 시작했습니다. 얼마 안 가서 결혼, 가족, 직장, 가정 모든 것이 사라졌습니다. 그는 “내 인생은 처참했고 지금은 더 나빠졌다”고 말했습니다.

결국 그는 치료 시설에 도움을 요청했습니다. “매우 나쁜 상태에 있었던 나에게 하나님이 문을 열어 주셨습니다.” 어느 날 기도 후 파블로는 자연의 아름다움을 통해 하나님을 경험했습니다. 곧 막내딸이 변화된 아버지를 보고 사이가 회복되었습니다. 지금 그는 다른 자녀들과도 신뢰를 회복하려 애쓰고 있습니다.

예레미야애가에서 예레미야 선지자는 하나님을 떠나 바벨론으로 유배된 자기 백성의 비참함을 슬퍼하며 말합니다. “내가 겪은 그 고통, 쓴 쑥과 쓸개즙 같은 그 고난을 난 잊지 못한다... 울적한 마음을 가눌 길이 없다”(예레미야애가 3:19-20, 새번역). 이스라엘 백성처럼 파블로도 하나님과 멀어져 있었지만, 예레미야처럼 그도 하나님 안에서 희망을 찾았습니다. “여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함이니이다 이것들이 아침마다 새로우니 주의 성실하심이 크시도소이다”(22-23절).

파블로처럼 이스라엘 백성들도 새로운 시작을 하였습니다. 우리는 하나님께로 돌아와 희망을 찾을 수 있습니다.

HOPE IN GOD

Because of his father’s alcoholism and mistreatment of his mother, Pablo left home when he was a teenager. He moved in with an uncle, graduated high school, married, and had three children. But sadly, Pablo began repeating the same destructive behavior he’d once fled. His own alcohol addiction and behavior began to tear his family apart. Soon, it was all gone—his marriage, family, job, and home. “My life was terrible, and it got worse,” he said.

Finally he turned to a treatment facility for help. “I was in bad shape, and God opened the door for me.” One day after praying, he experienced God through the beauty of nature. Soon his youngest daughter noticed he’d changed, and reconciled with him. Today he’s working to rebuild trust with his other children.

In Lamentations, the prophet Jeremiah grieved over the plight of his people, who had turned from God and were exiled to Babylon: “I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall . . . and my soul is downcast within me” (LAMENTATIONS 3:19-20). Like the Israelites, Pablo was far from God. And like Jeremiah, he found hope in God: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (VV. 22-23).

Like Pablo, the Israelites got a fresh start. We can turn to God and find hope.

영화 ‘숨겨진 삶’은 제2차 세계대전 중 오스트리아의 농부 프란츠 예거슈테터의 실제 이야기를 다루고 있습니다. 나치의 잔혹성을 혐오 하며 오직 예수님만을 주님으로 믿었던 프란츠는 히틀러에 대한 충성서약을 거부하다 체포되었습니다. 이어지는 영화의 내용은 이 같은 용기 있는 결정으로 그가 겪어야 했던 고통을 보여줍니다.

프란츠의 마을 사람들은 히틀러의 정책에 반대하는 그를 미워했습니다. 감방에 같이 있는 사람들도 그의 믿음을 조롱했고, 심지어 일부 사제들마저 그를 어리석은 사람으로 여겼습니다. 영화 속 한 인물은 “하나님은 너의 말보다 네 속 마음을 보신다”고 하며 살고 싶으면 히틀러에게 가짜로 “경례” 하면 된다고 유혹합니다. 프란츠는 믿음을 부인하라는 압박 가운데 이렇게 기도합니다. “나의 반석과 산성이신 하나님, 저에게 하나님을 따를 힘을 주소서”.

시편 31편은 악의 세력에 맞선 한 사람의 기도입니다. 다윗은 그의 압제자 들에게 맞서서 “내게 견고한 바위와 구원하는 산성이 되소서”(2절)라고 간구 했습니다(4, 11절). 고통 가운데서 가까이 있는 사람들의 멸시를 받던 다윗은 압박 속에서도 믿음을 지키려 했습니다(3, 10-13절). “내가 나의 영을 주의 손에 부탁하나이다”(5절)라는 그의 기도는 훗날 십자가에 달리신 예수님이 하셨던 바로 그 말씀입니다(누가복음 23:46).

우리 하나님은 믿음을 지키기 위해 희생당한 사람들을 모두 보상해 주십니다. 끝까지 신실했던 프란츠 예거슈테터는 예수님처럼 믿음의 대가로 목숨을 잃었습니다. 그러나 예수님이 무덤에서 부활하신 것처럼 프란츠도 언젠가 그렇게 부활할 것입니다.

COSTLY FAITHFULNESS

The film A Hidden Life tells the true story of Austrian farmer Franz Jägerstätter during World War II. Sickened by Nazi atrocities and believing only Jesus is Lord, Franz refused to swear allegiance to Hitler and was arrested. The rest of the film shows the anguish this brave stand brought him.

Franz’s village treated him with contempt for opposing Hitler’s agenda. Cellmates ridiculed his faith, and even some priests thought he was being foolish. “God doesn’t care what you say, only what’s in your heart,” one person says in the film, tempting Franz to “hail” Hitler without meaning it to save his life. “My rock, my fortress,” Franz prays, feeling pressure to recant, “give me strength to follow You.”

Psalm 31 is the prayer of a person facing evil powers. “Be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me” (V. 2), David pleads in the face of his own tyrants (VV. 4, 11). His life in anguish and suffering the contempt of his neighbors, David longs to stay faithful under pressure (VV. 3, 10-13). “Into your hands I commit my spirit,” he prays (V. 5), words later echoed by Jesus on the cross (LUKE 23:46).

Our God never leaves costly faithfulness unrewarded. Franz Jägerstätter stayed faithful to the end. Like Jesus, this faithfulness cost him his life. But just as Jesus was raised from the grave, so Franz will rise one day too.

다음 세대 세우기

농구 연습 시간에 엔리케의 아버지는 아들과 그의 친구에게 팀원들 앞에서 올바른 패스 방법을 시범해 보여주라고 했습니다. 엔리케는 지난 몇 주 동안 연습을 했지만 실수를 할까 걱정이 됐습니다. 그는 기도한 후 시범을 제대로 보이고는 “주님, 감사합니다!”라고 했습니다. 나중에 아버지가 말했습니다. “네가 열심히 하는 것이 자랑스럽다. 하지만 네가 기도하고 하나님 찬양한 것이 더 자랑스럽구나.” 엔리케는 어깨를 으쓱하며 말했습니다. “그냥 아빠가 하는 식으로 따라 했어요.”

역사를 돌아보면 하나님은 세대를 잇는 건강한 관계를 통해 역사해 오신 것을 알 수 있습니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들에게 그분의 법도와 계명을 전하시면서 거기에 아무것도 더하거나 빼지 말라고 명하셨습니다(신명기 4:1–2). 하나님은 또한 “너희는 지켜 행하라 이것이 여러 민족 앞에서 너희의 지혜요 너희의 지식이라”(6절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 하나님은 다른 민족이 그분의 백성을 어떻게 보는 지에만 관심이 있지 않으셨습니다. “그 일들을 네 아들들과 네 손자들에게 알게 하라”(9절)고 하신 것은 그들이 하나님을 “경외함을 배우게 하며, 그 자녀에게” 하나님을 가르치게 하려는 것이었습니다(10절).

우리가 부모가 아니고 아동 사역을 하지 않더라도, 성령님이 이끄시는 우리의 믿음을 어린 세대에게 전할 수 있습니다. 젊은이나 젊은 가정을 위해 기도하고, 영적 성장을 돕는 자료들을 제공하고, 만나 격려해줄 때, 하나님은 우리의 건강한 세대 간의 관계를 통해 다음 세대를 세우십니다.

IMPACTING GENERATIONS

During basketball practice, Enrique’s dad asked him and his friend to show the team how to pass the ball correctly. Enrique had practiced for weeks but feared messing up. He prayed, completed the drill, and said, “Thank You, Lord!” Later his dad said, “I’m proud of you for working hard, son. But I’m prouder that you prayed and praised God.” Enrique shrugged and said, “I just did what you do.”

Throughout history, God has worked through healthy, crossgenerational relationships. Sharing His decrees and laws with the Israelites, He said not to add to them nor subtract from them (DEUTERONOMY 4:1-2). “Observe them carefully,” God said, “for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations” (V. 6). But God wasn’t only interested in how others perceived His people. He said, “Teach them to your children and to their children after them” (V. 9). Why? So that they “may learn to revere” God and teach “their children” about Him (V. 10).

We don’t have to be parents or serve in children’s ministry to share our Spirit-empowered faith with younger people. Whether we’re praying for a younger person or a young family, providing resources to nurture spiritual growth, or offering encouragement, God uses our healthy, cross-generational relationships to impact generations to come.

더 크신 하나님

몽골의 전쟁 영웅 징기스칸(1162-1227년경)은 두각을 나타내기 전 자기 가문에서 위상을 높이려고 이복 형제를 죽였습니다. 권력을 잡은 그는 아시아 태평양 지역에서 동유럽에 이르기까지 알렉산더 대왕 보다 더 넓은 지역에 제국을 세우기 시작했습니다. 잔인한 전술을 사용했던 징기스칸과 그의 ‘황금 군단’은 가는 곳마다 죽음과 파괴의 자취를 남겼습니다. 잔혹했던 그의 군사 행동은 역사적으로 유례를 찾기 어려울 정도였습니다.

오늘날 우리는 약탈군보다 더 악한 적을 마주하고 있습니다. 그 적은 우리의 영혼을 빼앗아 파괴하려는 원수입니다. 베드로 사도는 이렇게 경고했습니다. “근신하라 깨어라 너희 대적 마귀가 우는 사자 같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾나니”(베드로전서 5:8). 이 대적은 거대한 전사처럼 교활하고 위험해서 우리 스스로 감당하기 어려운 존재입니다. 그러나 우리가 희망을 가질 큰 이유가 있습니다. 요한 사도는 “너희 안에 계신 이가 세상에 있는 이보다 크심이라” (요한1서 4:4)고 했습니다. 이 “우리 안에 계신 이”는 바로 성령님이십니다. 우리는 우리 영혼의 적을 두려워하지 않아도 됩니다.

우리가 성령님을 의지하면 우리 영혼을 정복하려는 자로부터 우리 생명을 지킬 수 있다는 자신감이 생깁니다. 우리의 하나님은 더 크십니다. 우리는 하나님이 모든 일에 우리와 함께하신다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다.

GOD IS GREATER

Before he became famous, the Mongolian warlord Genghis Khan (CA. 1162-1227) killed his own half brother to advance his position in the family. As he solidified his power, he began to build an empire more expansive than Alexander the Great’s, stretching from Asia’s Pacific coast to Eastern Europe. Ruthless in his tactics, the khan and his “Golden Horde” left a trail of death and destruction everywhere they advanced. His devastating military forays are unparalleled in recorded history.

Today we face a vicious foe even more intimidating than a marauding army—an enemy who wants to conquer and devastate our souls. The apostle Peter cautioned, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 PETER 5:8). This enemy is cunning and dangerous like a great warrior and is much more than we can handle on our own. But we have great reason for hope. The apostle John wrote, “The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 JOHN 4:4). This “one who is in you” is the Holy Spirit Himself. We need not fear the enemy of our souls.

As we rely on the Holy Spirit, we gain confidence that our lives are guarded from the one who’s trying to conquer our souls. Our God is greater. We can trust Him to be with us in everything.

하나님 이야기에 동참하기

고고학자 조디 매그니스와 그의 연구팀은 갈릴리 남부의 고대 마을 후콕에서 회당을 발굴하다 놀라운 모자이크 작품과 그림, 조각품들을 발견했습니다. 특히 모자이크는 희귀하게도 성경 속 드보라의 이야기와 그가 이스라엘의 가나안 전투에서 맡았던 역할을 그려 놓았습니다. 이 여전사에 대한 고대 기록은 지금까지 알려진 바가 없었습니다.

가나안의 20년 압제 속에서 여선지자 드보라는 “이스라엘의 사사”가 되었습니다”(사사기 4:4). 하나님의 말씀대로 드보라는 이스라엘 장군 바락에게 가나안 군대와 그들의 지휘관 시스라를 공격하라고 했습니다. 바락은 “납달리 자손과 스불론 자손 만 명을 거느리고 다불 산으로 가라”(6절)고 하신 하나님의 지시를 따랐고, 드보라는 적군을 그곳으로 유인했습니다. 가나안 군대는 전투 에서 패했고 시스라는 걸어서 도망가다가 결국은 목숨을 잃었습니다. 드보라와 바락이 용기 있게 순종함으로 “이날에 하나님이 가나안 왕 야빈을 이스라엘 자손 앞에 굴복하게 하셨습니다”(23절).

성경은 하나님의 백성이 힘을 합쳐 또는 혼자서 이루어낸 역사적 사건들을 우리를 위해 문학적인 모자이크처럼 보존하고 있습니다. 이 예들을 통해 우리는 용기를 얻어 역경과 고난 속에서도 하나님의 지시를 따를 수 있습니다. 우리는 그렇게 할 수 있도록 힘을 주시는 하나님께 의지할 수 있습니다.

PART OF GOD’S STORY

Archaeologist Jodi Magness and her team have been excavating a synagogue in the ancient village of Huqoq in Lower Galilee, where they’ve found an incredible collection of mosaics, paintings, and carvings. Particularly rare, however, is a mosaic telling the biblical story of Deborah and her role in Israel’s battle against the Canaanites; there’s no other known ancient depiction of this heroine.

During twenty years of oppression by Canaan, Deborah, a prophetess, “was leading Israel” (JUDGES 4:4). At God’s prompting, Deborah urged Israel’s general Barak to mount an attack on the Canaanite forces and their commander, Sisera. Barak heeded God’s instructions to “take . . . ten thousand men of Naphtali and Zebulun and lead them up to Mount Tabor” (V. 6), and Deborah lured the enemy’s army to the area. The Canaanite troops indeed fell in the battle, and though Sisera initially fled on foot, he too ultimately met his demise. “On that day God subdued . . . Canaan before the Israelites” (V. 23) through the courageous obedience of Deborah and Barak.

The Bible preserves for us a literary mosaic of historical events in the life of God’s people—collectively and individually. We can take courage from these examples to heed God’s instructions even in the face of hardship and struggle. We can trust Him to equip us with the strength to do so.

하나님 안에서 한 가족

내가 지도하던 후배 클래런스에게 “아들을 생각하면 어떤 게 제일 기분이 좋아?” 하고 물었습니다. 그러자 그는 네 살 된 자기 아들이 얼마나 영리한지를 쭉 자랑했습니다. 그중 특히 재미있었던 부분은 아들이 아빠와 이름이 같을 뿐 아니라 벌써 생김새까지 똑 같아 아빠의 스마트폰 잠금 장치를 자기 얼굴 인식으로 푼다는 것이었습니다!

요한복음 14장에서 예수님은 자신이 하나님 아버지와 얼마나 닮았는지 분명히 보여주셨습니다. 호기심 많은 빌립이 “주여 아버지를 우리에게 보여 주옵소서”(8절)하며 청하자 예수님은 “빌립아 내가 이렇게 오래 너희와 함께 있으되 네가 나를 알지 못하느냐 나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았거늘 어찌하여 아버지를 보이라 하느냐”(9절)라고 대답하셨습니다. 그런데 하나님 아버지는 어떻게 아들 예수님을 통해 자신을 나타내셨을까요? 하나님은 예수님이 하시는 “말”(10절)과 “일”(11절)을 통해 하나님의 사랑과 자비와 은혜, 그리고 더 많은 것들을 확실하게 보여주셨습니다.

성령님의 능력을 힘입어 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게는 서로 가족과 같은 특권이 있습니다. 그리고 보이지 않는 하나님이 그의 자녀들을 통해 보이게 됩니다. 요한은 예수님 닮은 사랑에 대해 이렇게 말합니다. “지금까지 하나님을 본 사람은 없습니다. 그러나 우리가 서로 사랑하면 하나님이 우리 가운데 계시고, 또 하나님의 사랑이 우리 가운데서 완성된 것입니다”(요한1서 4:12, 새번역).

FAMILY IN GOD

“What makes you smile when you think about your son?” That was my question for Clarence—a younger man I was mentoring. The proud father proceeded to share some of his bright four-year-old’s accomplishments. One particular detail left me amused. Not only does the child have his father’s first and last names, but he already looks so much like his father that he can unlock his father’s smartphone using facial recognition!

In John 14, Jesus made it clear how closely He resembled His Father. When an inquisitive Philip requested, “Lord, show us the Father” (V. 8), Jesus responded, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (V. 9). How was it that the Father was revealed through the Son? It was through Jesus’ “words” (V. 10) and “works” (V. 11) that God’s love, mercy, grace, and more were brilliantly displayed.

Empowered by God’s Spirit, believers in Jesus are privileged to share family likeness. The invisible God becomes visible through His children. Regarding Christlike love, John reminds us, “No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us” (1 JOHN 4:12 NLT).

직업 어부인 스콧 톰슨은 캘리포니아 해안 산타 바바라 해협에서 조업 중 달도 없는 어둔 밤에 배에서 떨어져 죽을 위기에 처했습니다. 그는 배를 향해 힘을 다해 헤엄쳐 갔지만 엔진으로 가는 배를 따라잡을 수 없었습니다. 그래서 그는 대신에 어둠 속에 멀리 떠 있는 석유 시추선까지 헤엄쳐 가려 했습니다. 희망을 잃어가던 톰슨에게 차가운 물 속에서 첨벙거리는 소리가 들렸습니다. 바다표범 한 마리가 얼마 동안 그와 함께 헤엄치며 그를 플랫폼 쪽으로 밀어주었습니다. 다섯 시간의 긴 수영 끝에 톰슨은 그 바다표범을 자신을 도우라고 보낸 “천사”라고 하였습니다.

THE HELP GOD PROVIDES

When commercial fisherman Scott Thompson fell out of his boat one moonless night in the Santa Barbara Channel off the California coast, he didn’t know if he’d survive. He swam hard after the boat, but the motor was running and he couldn’t reach it. So he attempted to swim to a distant oil platform in the darkness. Beginning to lose hope, Thompson heard a splash in the cold water near him. A harbor seal swam with him for a while, nudging him along toward the platform. Five hours later, Thompson completed the long swim and described the seal as “an angel” sent to help him.

The writer of the book of Hebrews describes angels as “ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation” (HEBREWS 1:14). The passage highlights the greatness of Jesus and emphasizes that angels—wonderful and glorious beings that they are—exist to further His purposes in saving us. Jesus sustains “all things by his powerful word” (V. 3).

All around us is an unseen reality in which God sends angels to aid those who have gladly received the good news of Jesus. Sometimes our nights may be long, and we may wonder if we can keep going. But He’ll always give us the help we need—help that will nudge us on in Him.

하나님을 기다리며

카즈토와 그의 아내 미기와는 두려운 마음으로 초음파 검사 결과를 기다렸습니다. 미기와는 9개월 넘게 간 기능이 나빠져 긴급히 간 이식을 받아야 할 상황이었습니다. 카즈토는 자기 간의 일부를 아내에게 기증할 수 있었지만, 한 가지 조건은 미기와의 심장이 튼튼해야 한다는 것이었습니다. 지난번 초음파 검사 결과 아내의 심장이 조금 좋아진 것 같았지만, 이번 검사에서는 얼마나 더 나아졌을까요?

그러나 실망스럽게도 이번 결과는 지금까지의 검사 중 가장 안 좋았습니다. 카즈토는 말했습니다. “우는 아내를 위로하고 나서 나도 혼자 울었습니다. 하지만... 기다림은 시간 낭비가 아닙니다. 우리가 겉으로 볼 수는 없어도 우리가 기다리는 동안... 하나님은 놀라운 일을 하고 계시기 때문입니다.”

카즈토의 하나님에 대한 믿음은 다윗 왕의 믿음과 비슷합니다. 다윗은 “너는 여호와를 기다릴지어다 강하고 담대하며 여호와를 기다릴지어다”(시편 27:14)라고 기록했습니다. 하나님은 우리의 “빛”이시요 “구원”이시요 “능력”이시니(1절), 우리는 하나님이 어둠 가운데서도 소망을 주실 것(3절)과 시련 중에도 위로하실 것(13절)과 “그의 장막” 안에서 우리를 안전하게 지켜 주실 것(5절)을 믿을 수 있습니다.

하나님이 우리의 기도에 즉시 응답하시지 않아도 우리는 변함없는 하나님의 성품을 온전히 신뢰할 수 있습니다. 우리의 고통을 그분께 맡기며 마음에 이렇게 다짐합시다. “강하고 담대하며 여호와를 기다릴지어다”(14절). 하나님은 우리와 함께하시며 언제나 우리의 유익을 위해 일하고 계십니다.

WAITING FOR GOD

Kazuto and his wife Migiwa waited with trepidation for the ultrasound exam results. Migiwa’s liver had been failing for more than nine months, and she urgently needed a liver transplant. Kazuto could donate a portion of his liver to his wife, but there was one condition: Migiwa’s heart had to be strong. The last ultrasound had shown slight improvement to her heart. Would it show more this time?

To their disappointment, the results were the worst yet. Kazuto shared: “After I comforted my crying wife, I also cried by myself. But . . . waiting isn’t a waste of time because God is nurturing something wonderful . . . while we wait, even though we can’t see anything on the surface.”

Kazuto’s confidence in God paralleled that of King David, who wrote, “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” (PSALM 27:14). Because God is our “light,” “salvation,” and “stronghold” (V. 1), we can trust Him to offer hope amid darkness (V. 3), comfort us during our trials (V. 13), and secure us safely in “his dwelling” (V. 5).

When God seems to delay in answering our prayers, we can still put our complete trust in His unchanging attributes. As we bring our heartaches to Him, let’s also instruct our hearts: “Be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” (V. 14). He is with us and always working for our good.

정직하게 살기

우버 기사 에스본 카마우는 아버지가 선물로 주시는 오토바이를 사러 가는 길이었던 16살 된 승객을 태웠습니다. 그가 내린 뒤 카마우는 뒷좌석에 두고 내린 가방을 발견했는데 그 안에는 오토바이를 살 현금 8천 달러가 들어 있었습니다. 카마우는 즉시 우버 본사에 연락하여 승객의 위치를 확인해 소년에게 현금을 그대로 돌려주었습니다. 소년은 감사하며 안도했습니다. 카마우는 말했습니다 “맞는 타이밍에 올바르게 행하십시오. 이기심이 나를 이기도록 둬서는 안 됩니다.”

카마우는 정직한 모습을 보여주었습니다. 돈을 쉽게 벌거나 남의 실수를 이용하려는 생각을 버리고 단순히 옳은 일을 하기로 선택한 것입니다. 잠언은 “바른 길로 행하는 자는 걸음이 평안하다”고 말합니다(10:9). 우리가 진실하게 살면 누군가에게 했던 말을 기억해 두려고 걱정할 필요가 없습니다. 진실만이 우리에게 중요하기 때문입니다. 그렇게 살면 남들이 우리에 대해 무슨 말을 할까, 우리가 꾸민 일이 드러날까 두려워하지 않아도 됩니다. 우리가 “굽은 길로 행하는 자”(9절)처럼 될까 두려워할 일도 없습니다. 우리는 하나님이 주시는 지혜(13절)를 보여주며 그냥 진실하게 살면 되는 것입니다. 우리는 하나님 안에서 안전하고 자유롭습니다.

살면서 거짓말을 하거나 남을 이용하려는 생각이 들 때가 많아도 하나님은 우리에게 하나님을 따라 살라고 하십니다. 그렇게 할 때에 우리는 “정직한”(29절) 삶을 살 수 있습니다.

WALKING IN INTEGRITY

An Uber driver named Esbon Kamau picked up a sixteen-year-old rider who was on his way to purchase a motorcycle—a gift from his father. After Kamau dropped the passenger off, he noticed the teen had left a bag in the back seat. There was $8,000 inside—the cash needed for the purchase of the motorcycle. Kamau quickly contacted Uber to try and locate the passenger. Soon Kamau delivered the cash back to the grateful, relieved young man. “Do the right thing at the right time,” Kamau said, “and don’t let selfishness overpower [you].”

Kamau displayed integrity. He resisted making a fast buck or taking advantage of someone’s mistake. Instead, he chose to simply do the right thing. “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,” Proverbs says (10:9). When we practice integrity, we never have to worry about remembering what we said to whom, because truth is our only concern. When we practice integrity, we don’t have to fear for our reputation or that our schemes will catch up with us. We don’t have to be concerned about being a person whose “crooked paths will be found out” (V. 9). We simply live true—displaying wisdom (V. 13) that comes from God. We’re secure and free in Him.

We face numerous temptations to lie or manipulate in life, but God calls us to walk with Him. And as we do, we can lead “blameless” (V. 29) lives of integrity.

더 좋은 하나님 나라

아버지의 임종을 앞두고 여러 감정이 스쳤던 미셸은 아버지가 “얘야, 이젠 네 결혼식에 손잡고 들어가지 못하게 됐구나.” 하는 말씀에 슬퍼졌습니다. 그러나 미셸은 히브리서 11장의 소망의 말씀을 붙잡고 “아빠는 하늘에 있는 더 좋은 나라로 가시는 거잖아요.”라고 하며 변함없는 자기의 사랑을 전했습니다. 아버지가 돌아가시면 하나님과 영원히 함께 계실 것을 믿었던 미셸은 “천국은 정말로 좋은 곳!”이라는 것을 알고 있었습니다.

히브리서는 국가와 종교적 반대 세력의 박해를 받던 예수님을 믿는 유대인 신자들에게 쓴 편지입니다. 이 서신은 서기 70년 성전이 파괴되기 전에 기록된 것이지만, 그 직후에 예루살렘이 로마에 의해 함락되었을 가능성도 있습니다. 이런 두려움 가운데 저자는 믿는 사람들에게 “구름 같이 둘러싼 허다한 증인들” (히브리서 12:1)을 말하며 믿음을 굳게 지키라고 하였습니다. 그 증인들은 “약속을 받지 못하였으되 그것들을 멀리서 보고 환영하며”(11:13) 믿음으로 살면서 “더 나은 본향, 곧 하늘에 있는 것”을 사모했습니다. 하나님은 그들의 하나님이라 불리기를 기뻐하시며 “그들을 위하여 한 성을 예비하셨습니다”(16절).

GOD’S BETTER COUNTRY

Michele experienced a mixture of emotions as her father neared the end of his life. She grieved when he said, “Honey, I won’t be here to walk you down the aisle.” But she assured him of her love, clinging to the hope she found in Hebrews 11 as she said, “You’re heading for a better country, a country in heaven.” Michele believed that her dad, when he died, would be with God forever. She reflected, “Heaven will be that good!”

The letter to the Hebrews was aimed at Jewish believers in Jesus experiencing persecution by state and religious opponents. Although it was written before the destruction of the temple in ad 70, the fall of Jerusalem to the Romans may have occurred soon after. In this climate of fear, the author urged the believers to hold firm to their faith as he highlighted a great “cloud of witnesses” (HEBREWS 12:1). Each “did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance” (11:13). They lived by faith, “longing for a better country—a heavenly one.” God was pleased to be called their God, and He “prepared a city for them” (V. 16).

Although Michele ached with sadness when her father died, she embraced the promises of her heavenly Father. We too can welcome these same promises “from a distance” (V. 13), trusting in God.
