가면을 벗어버리고, 오직 예수!
고대 그리스 시대의 연극무대에서는 배우들이 비극이나 희극용 가면을 쓰고 등장 인물의 감정을 연기했습니다. 또한 가면 덕분에 한 배우가 같은 작품에서 여러 역할을 맡을 수도 있었습니다. 그러나 가면들은 영구적인 것이 아니었고, 실제 인물을 보여주는 것도 아니었습니다. 얼굴을 가리는 가면은 공연을 위해 썼다가 끝나면 벗어버리는 것이었습니다.
골로새서 3장 10절에서 바울은 예수님을 믿는 성도들에게 “새 사람을 입었으니 이는 자기를 창조하신 이의 형상을 따라 지식에까지 새롭게 하심을 입은 자니라”라고 격려합니다. 이는 사람들을 즐겁게 하기 위해 잠시 쓰는 가면이 아니라, 매일의 삶 속에서 드러나는 변하지 않는 모습이어야 합니다. 사도는 또한 “옛 사람을 벗어버리라”(에베소서 4:22)고 말하는데, 이는 곧 그리스도 안에서 구원받기 전의 죄악된 삶을 버리라는 것입니다.
옛 습관을 버리고 새로운 사람으로 거듭나는 것은 저절로 일어나지 않습니다. 바울은 “오직 너희의 심령이 새롭게 되어”(23절)야 한다고 말합니다. 이것은 우리가 믿는 자로서 “하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은”(24절) 자라는 것을 인식함으로써 시작됩니다.

NO MASK, SIMPLY JESUS
In ancient Greece, actors on stage would portray the emotions of their characters by wearing masks that either expressed tragedy or comedy. Masks also allowed the same actor to play multiple roles in the same production. They weren’t permanent, nor were they representative of the real person. Put on for the performance, the facial disguises were taken off when the production was over.
In Colossians 3:10, Paul writes to believers in Jesus to encourage them to “put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” Rather than a temporary mask worn to entertain people, it should be displayed as a permanent part of life that will be seen each day. The apostle says to “put off your old self” (EPHESIANS 4:22)—the sinful life we lived before receiving salvation in Christ.
Taking off our old habits and putting on a new self doesn’t just happen naturally. Paul says we need “to be made new in the attitude of [our] minds” (V. 23). This starts with how we think— recognizing that as believers we’re “created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (V. 24).
The actors in Greece were paid to put on fake faces. Today, by God’s grace, let’s put on the true image of Jesus so the world knows that He’s living within us.
