두렵지 않은 종말
1859년에 기록된 역사상 가장 큰 태양 폭풍이 발생했습니다. 캐링턴 사건으로 알려진 그 폭풍은 대규모 지구자기장 교란을 일으켜 전보 시스템을 마비시켰습니다. 웹사이트 스페이스닷컴은 “캐링턴 사건과 같은 규모의 폭풍이 오늘 일어난다면 인터넷 종말을 일으킬 수 있을 것으로 추측 된다”고 말합니다.
종말을 뜻하는 ‘아포칼립스’라는 불길한 단어가 흥미롭습니다. 요한 계시록의 책 제목이 헬라어로 바로 그것(‘아포칼립시스’)이기 때문입니다. 그러나 이 단어는 재앙이나 세상의 종말만 의미하지는 않습니다. ‘계시록’이라는 제목에서 알 수 있듯이 그 단어는 베일을 벗기는 것, 분명히 드러내는 것을 뜻하기도 합니다.
요한계시록은 “예수 그리스도의 계시라”라고 시작합니다(1:1). 요한 계시록은 예수님을 하나님의 어린 양으로 표현하는데, 요한은 그 책에서 25번 이상 예수님에게 그 단어를 사용하고 있습니다. 또한 요한계시록은 예수님이 “그의 눈은 불꽃 같고 그의 발은 풀무불에 단련한 빛난 주석 같고 그의 음성은 많은 물 소리와 같다”(14-15절)고 말합니다. 요한은 하나님의 어린 양을 처음 보았을 때, “그의 발 앞에 엎드려 죽은 자 같이”(17절) 되었습니다. 그러나 그 어린 양이신 예수님이 그를 만지시며 “두려워하지 말라... 나는 세세토록 살아 있는 자라”(18절)고 말씀하셨습니다.
우리는 요한계시록을 두려운 종말보다는 영광을 받으시고 부활하신 그리스도를 보여주는 말씀으로 받아들일 수 있습니다. 예수님은 우리가 경배하는 바로 그분입니다.

NO FEAR OF AN APOCALYPSE
In 1859, the largest solar storm in recorded history took place. Known as the Carrington Event, it produced a massive geomagnetic disturbance blamed for disrupting the telegraph system. The website Space.com says, “It’s been conjectured that a storm on the scale of the Carrington event, if it happened today, could cause an internet apocalypse.”
The ominous word apocalypse intrigues us. It’s the Greek title of the book of Revelation (apokalypsis). But the word doesn’t only mean a catastrophe or the end of the world. As the title Revelation implies, it also refers to an unveiling, a revealing.
The book opens, “The revelation from Jesus Christ” (REVELATION 1:1). Revelation reveals Jesus as the Lamb of God, a term John uses in the book more than twenty-five times to describe Him. Revelation also reveals Christ as one whose “eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters” (VV. 14-15). When John first saw the Lamb of God, he “fell at his feet as though dead” (V. 17). But this Lamb touched him and said, “Do not be afraid. . . . I am alive for ever and ever!” (VV. 17-18).
Rather than fearing any apocalypse, we can embrace Revelation for showing us the glorified, resurrected Christ. He’s the one we worship.
