사려 깊은 우리 하나님
“내 흉터 보여줄까?” 여러 해 전 사다리에서 떨어져 가슴 아래로 마비가 된 친구 빌이 지금은 수술 중 생긴 심한 감염으로 병원에 입원해 있었습니다. 그는 처음 겪는 이 어려움에 대해 이야기하며 담요를 들어 감염 치료를 하고 남은 긴 절개 부위를 나에게 보여주었습니다. “아프지 않아?”하고 물으니 그는 “아무 감각도 없어.”라고 대답했습니다.
그 말을 듣는 순간 나는 죄책감이 들었습니다. 오랜 세월 친구로 지내온 그가 다쳐서 움직이지 못하고 감각까지 없어진 것을 미처 몰랐던 것입니다. 내가 그의 입장에서 그의 처지와 다친 상처를 보았다면 매일 직면하는 그의 문제들을 더 잘 이해했을 텐데 그러지 못한 것이 부끄러웠습니다.
내가 친구에 대해 사려 깊지 못했던 것을 돌아보니 유다 왕 히스기야가 한 일이 떠오릅니다. 이사야 선지자가 히스기야에게 그의 궁전의 모든 것이 언젠가 “바벨론으로 옮겨질 것”이며, 그의 후손들이 “사로잡혀 갈 것”이라 하는 말을 듣고(열왕기하 20:17-18) 그는 ‘기뻐’했습니다. “히스기야는 자기가 살아 있는 동안만이라도 평화와 안정이 계속된다면, 그것만으로도 다행이라고 생각하였습니다”(19절, 현대인의 성경). 히스기야는 선한 왕이었지만 다른 사람들이 겪을 일보다 자기 자신을 더 많이 생각했습니다.
그러나 하나님은 정말 다르십니다. 요한은 “사랑은 여기 있으니 우리가 하나님을 사랑한 것이 아니요 하나님이 우리를 사랑하사 그 아들을 보내어” 우리를 구원하셨다고 기록했습니다(요한1서 4:10). 우리를 진실로 깊이 사랑 하시는 하나님은 우리를 위해 고난을 당하셨고, 그래서 우리는 그의 사랑 안에서 영원히 살 수 있게 되었습니다.
만일 내가 사는 날에 태평과 진실이 있을진대 어찌 선하지 아니하리요 [열왕기하 20:19]

OUR THOUGHTFUL GOD
“Do you want to see my scar?” My friend Bill had been paralyzed from the chest down after falling off a ladder years ago, and now he was in the hospital for a severe infection acquired during a surgery. As we discussed his new challenge, he lifted his blanket to show me the long incision made to treat his infection. “Does it hurt?” I asked. “I can’t feel it at all,” he said.
As soon as he said it, I felt convicted. During all the years I’d known him as a friend, I’d been unaware that his injury prevented both his mobility and ability to feel. I was embarrassed that I hadn’t had more empathy for him and his injury to better understand what he faced daily.
My lack of thoughtfulness about my friend reminds me of something King Hezekiah of Judah did. When the prophet Isaiah told him that everything in his palace would one day “be carried off to Babylon,” and his own descendants “taken away” (2 KINGS 20:17-18), Hezekiah was pleased. “For he thought, ‘Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?’ ” (V. 19). Even though he was a good king, Hezekiah was focused more on himself than on what others would face.
How different is God. “This is love,” John wrote, “not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son” to save us (1 JOHN 4:10). God cares so deeply for us that He suffered for us, so that we might live in His love forever.
