이제부터 외지인이 아닙니다
“너는 이 나라 사람이 아니다.” 그 말은 여덟 살 소녀의 마음을 무너뜨렸고, 그 아픔은 지속되었습니다. 이 아이의 가족은 전쟁으로 파괴된 나라의 난민촌에서 새로운 나라로 이주했고, 소녀의 이민 카드에는 ‘외인’이라는 단어가 찍혀 있었습니다. 마치 자신이 그 나라에 속해 있지 않는 느낌을 받았습니다.
성인이 된 이 여인은 예수님을 믿었지만 환영 받지 못하는 이방인이라는 느낌에 시달리며 여전히 소외감을 느꼈습니다. 그러던 중 성경을 읽다가 에베소서 2장에 있는 약속의 말씀들을 보게 되었습니다. 12절에서 그 오래되고 불편한 ‘외인’이라는 단어를 보았습니다. “그 때에 너희는 그리스도 밖에 있었고 이스라엘 나라 밖의 사람이라 약속의 언약들에 대하여는 외인이요 세상에서 소망이 없고 하나님도 없는 자이더니.” 그러나 계속 읽어 나가면서 그리스도의 희생이 자신의 지위를 어떻게 변화시켰는지 알게 되었습니다. 19절에 이르러 “이제부터 너희는” 외인도 나그네도 아니라는 사실을 읽게 되었습니다. 이제 자신은 하나님의 사람들과 같은 “동료 시민”이었습니다. 자신이 천국의 시민임을 깨닫자 그녀는 큰 기쁨을 느꼈습니다. 그녀는 이제 다시는 이방인으로 지내지 않게 될 것입니다. 하나님께서 이미 그녀를 받아 주신 것입니다.
우리의 죄로 말미암아 우리는 하나님으로부터 멀어졌습니다. 그러나 우리는 언제까지 그렇게 멀어져 있을 필요가 없습니다. 예수님께서는 “먼 데 있는” 모든 이들에게 평화를 전해주셨고(17절) 예수님을 믿는 모든 이들을 주님의 영원한 나라의 동료 시민으로 만들어 주셨습니다. 그리스도의 몸으로 하나된 것입니다.

NO LONGER A FOREIGNER
“You don’t belong here.” Those words crushed an eightyear- old girl’s heart, and the pain stayed with her. Her family had emigrated from a refugee camp in a war-torn country to a new country, and her immigration card had the word alien stamped on it. She felt like she didn’t belong.
As an adult, although she put her faith in Jesus, she still felt alienated—stung by the feeling that she was an unwelcome outsider. While reading her Bible, she discovered the promises of Ephesians 2. In verse 12, she saw that old, troubling word alien. “You were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world” (NKJV). But as she kept reading, she saw how Christ’s sacrifice had changed her status. She got to verse 19, which told her, “You are no longer” a foreigner or alien. She was a “fellow citizen” with God’s people. Realizing that she was a citizen of heaven, she was overjoyed. Never again would she be an outsider. God had taken her in and accepted her.
Because of our sin, we’re alienated from God. But we don’t have to stay that way. Jesus brought peace to all who were “far away” (V. 17), making all who trust Him fellow citizens of His eternal kingdom—united as the body of Christ.
