베푸는 이의 마음
위스콘신에서 보내는 마지막 날, 나와 작별인사를 하는 자리에 친구가 네 살짜리 딸 킨슬리를 데리고 왔습니다. “가지 마세요.” 아이가 말했습니다. 나는 아이를 안아주고는 내가 간직하고 있던 손으로 직접 칠해 만든 캔버스 부채를 선물로 주었습니다. “내가 보고싶을 때 이 부채를 보면서 내가 너를 사랑한다는 것을 기억해 줘.” 그런데 킨슬리는 그 부채 대신 내 가방에 들어있던 종이부채를 가져도 되냐고 물었습니다. “그건 망가졌는데. 난 ‘가장 좋은’ 부채를 네게 주고 싶어.” 나는 킨슬리에게 내가 가장 아꼈던 부채를 선물한 걸 후회하지 않았습니다. 아이가 행복해하는 모습에 내가 더 행복했으니까요. 그런데 얼마 후 킨슬리가 내가 망가진 부채를 계속 쓰고 있는 것이 슬프다고 엄마에게 말했습니다. 그들은 내게 멋진 보라색 새 부채를 보내주었습니다. 내게 기쁜 마음으로 부채를 선물한 후 킨슬리는 다시 행복해졌고 나 또한 행복했습니다.
자기 만족과 자기 보존을 부추기는 이 세상에서는 나누려는 마음으로 살기보다는 자신의 것을 쌓아두려는 유혹을 받기 쉽습니다. 그러나 성경은 사람이 “흩어 구제하여도 더욱 부하게 되는 일이 있다”(잠언 11:24)고 말합니다. 우리 문화는 풍족함을 더, 더, 더 많이 소유하는 것으로 정의하지만, 성경은 “구제를 좋아하는 자는 풍족하여질 것이요 남을 윤택하게 하는 자는 자기도 윤택하여지리라”(25절)고 말합니다.
하나님의 무한하며 무조건적인 사랑과 관용이 지속적으로 우리를 재충전해 줍니다. 우리 모두는 베푸는 이의 마음을 갖고 그침없이 베푸는 순환 고리를 만들 수 있습니다. 모든 좋은 것을 주시는 하나님은 넘치도록 부어주시는 데 결코 지치지 않는 분이심을 우리가 알기 때문입니다.

A GIVER’S HEART
On our last day in Wisconsin, my friend brought her four-yearold daughter Kinslee to say goodbye. “I don’t want you to move,” said Kinslee. I hugged her and gave her a canvas, hand-painted fan from my collection. “When you miss me, use this fan and remember that I love you.” Kinslee asked if she could have a different fan—a paper one from my bag. “That one’s broken,” I said. “I want you to have my best fan.” I didn’t regret giving Kinslee my favorite fan. Seeing her happy made me happier. Later, Kinslee told her mother she was sad because I kept the broken fan. They sent me a brand-new, fancy purple fan. After giving generously to me, Kinslee felt happy again. So did I.
In a world that promotes self-gratification and self-preservation, we can be tempted to hoard instead of living with giving hearts. However, the Bible says that a person who “gives freely . . . gains even more” (PROVERBS 11:24). Our culture defines prosperity as having more and more and more, but the Bible says that “a generous person will prosper” and “whoever refreshes others will be refreshed” (V. 25).
God’s unlimited and unconditional love and generosity continually recharge us. We can each have a giver’s heart and create unending giving cycles because we know God—the Giver of all good things—never gets tired of providing abundantly.
