별들의 도전

20세기 초 이탈리아의 시인 마리네티는 과거를 거부하며 전통적인 미의 관념을 비웃고, 대신 기계를 미화하는 예술운동인 미래주의를 시작했습니다. 1909년 마리네티는 “여성에 대한 경멸”을 천명한 ‘미래주의 선언문’을 썼으며, “주먹다툼”을 신봉하며 “우리는 전쟁을 찬양하기를 원한다.”고 주장했습니다. 그 선언문은 “우리는 세계 정상에 서서 다시 한번 별들을 향한 당찬 도전을 시작한다!”고 끝을 맺고 있습니다.

마리네티의 선언문 후 5년이 지나 현대식 전쟁이 본격적으로 시작 되었습니다. 제1차 세계대전은 영광을 가져오지 않았으며 마리네티 자신은 1944년에 사망했습니다. 그러나 여전히 제자리를 지키고 있는 별들은 전혀 알아차리지도 못했습니다.

다윗 왕은 완전히 다른 시각을 가지고 별들을 시로 노래했습니다. 그는 이렇게 썼습니다. “주의 손가락으로 만드신 주의 하늘과 주께서 베풀어 두신 달과 별들을 내가 보오니 사람이 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 생각하시며 인자가 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 돌보시나이까”(시편 8:3-4). 다윗의 질문은 불신의 질문이 아니라 놀라움에 찬 겸손에서 나온 질문입니다. 그는 이 광대한 우주를 만드신 하나님이 참으로 우리를 마음에 두신다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 하나님은 우리의 상세한 것 하나하나, 곧 좋은 것과 나쁜 것, 겸손한 것, 당돌한 것, 심지어 어리석은 것까지 다 아십니다.

별들에게 도전하는 것은 무의미합니다. 오히려 별들이 우리 창조주를 찬양하라고 우리에게 도전합니다.

THE CHALLENGE OF THE STARS

In the early twentieth century, Italian poet F. T. Marinetti launched Futurism, an artistic movement that rejected the past, scoffed at traditional ideas of beauty, and glorified machinery instead. In 1909, Marinetti wrote his Manifesto of Futurism, in which he declared “contempt for women,” praised “the blow with the fist,” and asserted, “We want to glorify war.” The manifesto concludes: “Standing on the world’s summit we launch once again our insolent challenge to the stars!”

Five years after Marinetti’s manifesto, modern warfare began in earnest. World War I did not bring glory. Marinetti himself died in 1944. The stars, still in place, took no notice.

King David sang poetically of the stars but with a dramatically different outlook. He wrote, “When I consider your heavens, the
work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (PSALM 8:3–4). David’s question isn’t one of disbelief but of amazed humility. He knew that the God who made this vast cosmos is indeed mindful of us. He notices every detail about us—the good, the bad, the humble, the insolent—even the absurd.

It’s pointless to challenge the stars. Rather, they challenge us to praise our Creator.
