가장 필요한 치유

2020년 부활주일, 브라질의 리우데자네이루를 내려다보는 유명한 조각상 ‘구세주 그리스도상’에 예수님께서 의사 가운을 입은 모습을 연출하는 조명이 비추어졌습니다. 그리스도를 의사로 표현한 감동적인 모습은 코로나바이러스 팬데믹과 사투를 벌이는 최전방 의료진에 대한 경의를 표하기 위함이었습니다. 그 형상은 위대한 의사로 흔히 묘사되는 예수님을 생생하게 나타내 보여주었습니다(마가복음 2:17).

예수님은 이 땅에서의 사역 초기에 맹인 바디메오(마가복음 10:46-52), 나병환자(누가복음 5:12-16), 그리고 중풍병자(마태복음 9:1-8)와 같이 육체적으로 고통받는 많은 사람들을 고쳐주셨습니다. 예수님이 한 끼 식사를 가지고 배고픈 큰 무리를 먹이신 예에서 보는 것처럼, 주님은 그를 따르는 이들의 건강도 돌봐 주셨습니다(요한복음 6:1-13). 이런 기적들은 모두 예수님의 전능한 능력과 사람들을 향한 그분의 참된 사랑을 보여줍니다.

그러나 예수님의 가장 위대한 치유는 이사야 선지자가 예언한 대로 그의 죽으심과 부활을 통해서 왔습니다. 우리의 죄 때문에 하나님과 단절되는 가장 큰 절망 속에서 “[예수님이] 채찍에 맞으므로 우리는 나음을 받은”(이사야 53:5) 것입니다. 예수님께서 우리의 모든 건강 문제들을 다 고쳐 주시는 것은 아니지만 우리에게 가장 필요한 치유를 행하시는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다. 그 치유는 바로 하나님과 우리 사이의 관계의 회복입니다.

DEEPER HEALING

On Easter Sunday 2020, the famous Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro in Brazil was illuminated in a way that appeared to clothe Jesus in the attire of a physician. The poignant portrayal of Christ as a doctor was in tribute to the many frontline health-care workers battling the coronavirus pandemic. The imagery brings to life the common description of Jesus as our Great Physician (MARK 2:17).

Jesus healed many people of their physical afflictions during His earthly ministry: blind Bartimaeus (10:46–52), a leper (LUKE 5:12–16), and a paralytic (MATTHEW 9:1–8), to name a few. His care for the health of those following Him was also demonstrated in providing for their hunger by multiplying a simple meal to feed the masses (JOHN 6:1–13). Each of these miracles reveal both Jesus’ mighty power and His genuine love for people.

His greatest act of healing, however, came through His death and resurrection, as foretold by the prophet Isaiah. It is “by [Jesus’] wounds we are healed” of our worst affliction: our separation from God as a result of our sins (ISAIAH 53:5). Though Jesus doesn’t heal all our health challenges, we can trust the cure for our deepest need: the healing He brings to our relationship with God.

예수님께 달려가기

벤과 그의 친구들은 파리 여행 중 한 유명한 박물관을 찾았습니다. 벤은 미술 학도는 아니었지만 유진 버낸드의 ‘부활의 아침에 무덤으로 달려가는 제자 베드로와 요한’이라는 제목의 그림을 보고 경외감이 들었습니다. 별다른 설명 없이도 베드로와 요한의 표정과 손동작이 많은 것을 말해주고 있었고, 관람객으로 하여금 그림에 동화되어 그들의 고조된 감정을 함께 느끼도록 해 주었습니다.

그 그림은 요한복음 20:1-10 말씀을 바탕으로 예수님의 빈 무덤으로 달려가는 두 사람을(4절) 묘사하고 있습니다. 이 명화는 감정적인 혼돈에 휩싸인 두 제자의 생생한 모습을 포착하고 있습니다. 그때 그들에게 온전히 형성된 믿음이 있었던 것은 아니었지만 그들은 올바른 방향으로 달려갔으며 마침내 부활하신 예수님을 만났습니다(19-29절). 그들의 모습은 지금까지 수 세기 동안 예수님을 찾았던 사람들의 모습과 다르지 않았습니다. 우리는 빈 무덤이나 명화를 보는 경험이 없어도 복음을 생생히 알 수 있습니다. 성경은 우리에게 의심이나 의문, 확신 못하는 것이 있어도 예수님과 그분의 사랑을 소망하고 추구하며 그 방향으로 달려가라고 강권합니다. 내일 부활절을 기쁘게 맞으며, “너희가 온 마음으로 나를 구하면 나를 찾을 것이요 나를 만나리라”(예레미야 29:13)고 말씀하시는 하나님의 신실하심을 기억하기를 바랍니다.

RUNNING TO JESUS

On a trip to Paris, Ben and his friends found themselves at one of the renowned museums in the city. Though Ben wasn’t a student of art, he was in awe as he looked upon the painting titled The Disciples Peter and John Running to the Sepulchre on the Morning of the Resurrection by Eugène Burnand. Without words, the looks on the faces of Peter and John and the position of their hands speak volumes, inviting onlookers to step into their shoes and share their adrenaline-charged emotions.

Based on John 20:1–10, the painting portrays the two running in the direction of the empty tomb of Jesus (V. 4). The masterpiece captures the intensity of the two emotionally conflicted disciples. Though at that juncture theirs wasn’t a fully formed faith, they were running in the right direction, and eventually the resurrected Jesus revealed Himself to them (VV. 19–29). Their search was not unlike that of Jesus seekers through the centuries. Although we may be removed from the experiences of an empty tomb or a brilliant piece of art, we can clearly see the good news. Scripture compels us to hope and seek and run in the direction of Jesus and His love—even with doubts, questions, and uncertainties. Tomorrow, as we celebrate Easter, may we remember God’s faithfulness: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (JEREMIAH 29:13).

핏방울

스코틀랜드 국립 미술관을 관람하던 중 나는 네덜란드 화가 빈센트 반 고흐가 그린 여러 ‘올리브 나무’ 그림 중 한 작품이 보여주는 강렬한 붓놀림과 생생한 색감에 매료되었습니다. 여러 역사학자들은 그 작품이 감람산 겟세마네 동산의 예수님의 고난에서 영감을 받은 것으로 생각합니다. 특히 그림에서 나의 눈을 사로잡은 것은 오래된 나무 주변에 흩뿌려진 듯한 작은 붉은 점들이었습니다.

제자 유다가 배반할 것을 예견하신 날 밤, 예수님은 산자락에 올리브 나무로 가득하여 감람산이라고 알려진 산으로 가서 기도하셨습니다. 배반당하여 십자가의 고난을 겪게 될 것을 아셨던 예수님은 매우 괴로워하시며 “땀이 땅에 떨어지는 핏방울같이 되도록”(누가복음 22:44) 기도하셨습니다. 예수님은 그 동산에서, 오래전 그 성금요일에 피를 흘리게 될 공개 처형으로 인해 겪게 될 고통과 수치를 준비하시며 고통스러워하셨습니다.

반 고흐의 그림에 있는 붉은색 물감은 예수님이 “많은 고난을 받고 버린 바”(마가복음 8:31) 되셔야 했던 사실을 떠올려 줍니다. 그러나 고난이 주님의 이야기의 한 부분이긴 하지만 더 이상 그 그림을 지배하는 요소는 아닙니다. 죽음을 이기신 예수님의 승리는 우리의 고난조차도 변화시켜, 주님께서 창조하시는 우리 삶의 아름다운 풍경의 한 부분이 되게 합니다.

DROPS OF RED

Walking through the Scottish National Gallery, I was drawn to the strong brushwork and vibrant colors of one of many Olive Trees paintings by Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. Many historians believe the work was inspired by Jesus’ experience in the garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives. What especially caught my eye on the canvas of the painting were the small red splotches of paint among the ancient trees.

Known as the Mount of Olives because of all the olive trees located on the mountainside, Jesus went there to pray on the night that He predicted His disciple Judas would betray Him. Jesus was overwhelmed with anguish knowing the betrayal would result in His crucifixion. As He prayed, “his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground” (LUKE 22:44). Jesus’ agony was evident in the garden as He prepared for the pain and humiliation of a public execution that would result in the physical shedding of His blood on that Good Friday long ago.

The red paint on Van Gogh’s painting reminds us that Jesus had to “suffer many things and be rejected” (MARK 8:31). While suffering is part of His story, however, it no longer dominates the
picture. Jesus’ victory over death transforms even our suffering, allowing it to become only a part of the beautiful landscape of our lives He’s creating.

섬김에의 도전

드아비옹은 열세 살 밖에 안 되었지만 이웃을 돕는 일에 도전해 보기로 했습니다. 그와 그의 엄마는 여름방학 동안 50 가정의 잔디를 무료로 깎아주는 일에 동참할 아이들을 모으고 있는 어떤 사람에 대해 알게 되었습니다. 그 일의 목적은 재향 군인과 미혼모, 장애인, 혹은 도움이 필요한 누구든 돕기 위함이었습니다. 50개 주에서 50가정의 잔디 깎는 일을 했던 이 단체의 설립자는 근면의 가치와 사회 환원에 대한 중요성을 가르치기 위해 이 일을 시작했습니다. 드아비옹은 십대 아이들이 많이 하는 다른 여름 활동들을 마다하고 더위를 무릅쓰며 이웃을 돕기로 선택했고, 그 도전을 잘 마쳤습니다.

예수님을 믿는 사람들에게도 이런 섬김에의 도전이 주어집니다. 모든 사람을 위해 돌아가시기 전날 밤, 예수님은 친구들과 식사를 함께 하셨습니다 (요한복음 13:1-2). 곧 다가올 고통과 죽음을 잘 알고 계셨던 주님은 식사 자리에서 일어나 수건을 몸에 두르시고 제자들의 발을 씻어주셨습니다(3-5절). 주님은 “내가 주와 또는 선생이 되어 너희 발을 씻었으니 너희도 서로 씻어주는 것이 옳으니라”라고 말씀하셨습니다(14절).

겸손한 종으로 우리의 본이 되신 예수님은 사람들을 돌보는 일에 힘쓰셨습니다. 눈먼 자와 병자를 고치셨고, 천국 복음을 가르치셨으며, 친구들을 위해 목숨을 버리셨습니다. 당신을 사랑하시는 그리스도께 이번 주에 누구를 섬기길 원하시는지 여쭈어보십시오.

THE CHALLENGE TO SERVE

Although just thirteen years old, DeAvion took up a challenge to serve others. He and his mom had heard a story about a man who called on kids to mow fifty lawns for free during their summer break. Their focus was to assist veterans, single moms, people with disabilities—or anyone who just needed help. The founder (who had mowed fifty lawns in fifty states) created the challenge to teach the importance of work ethic and giving back to the community. Despite the heat and the availability of other activities a teenager could pursue in the summer, DeAvion chose to serve others and completed the challenge.

The challenge to serve comes to believers in Jesus as well. The evening before He would die for all people, Jesus ate dinner with His friends (JOHN 13:1–2). He was well aware of the suffering and death He would soon encounter, yet He got up from the meal, wrapped a towel around Himself, and began to wash His disciples’ feet (VV. 3–5). “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet,” He said (V. 14).

Jesus, the humble Servant and our example, cared for people: He healed the blind and sick, taught the good news of His kingdom, and gave His life for His friends. Because Christ loves you, ask Him who He wants you to serve this week.

일부분만이 아닙니다

새로운 곳으로 이주할 때에는 누구나 자신의 일부를 조금씩 남기고 떠납니다. 그러나 춥고 황량한 남극의 빌라 라스 에스트렐라에 오래 거주하려면 떠나기 전에 실제로 몸의 한 부분을 확실히 남겨놓아야 합니다. 그곳은 제일 가까운 병원이 625마일(천 킬로미터)이나 떨어져 있기 때문에 혹시 맹장이 터지기라도 하면 대책이 없습니다. 그래서 그곳에 거주하기 위해 가는 사람들은 모두 맹장 수술을 미리 받아야 합니다.

심하다고 생각되지 않습니까? 하지만 하나님 나라의 시민이 되는 것은 이보다 더 심합니다. 사람들이 예수님의 방법이 아닌 그들 나름대로의 방법으로 주님을 따르려는 것을 보신 예수님은 제자가 된다는 것의 의미를 재정립해 주셨습니다(마태복음 16:25-27). 주님은 “나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라”(24절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 이 의미는 주님과 주님의 나라를 대적하는 그 어떤 것도 다 내려놓을 준비가 되어 있어야 한다는 것입니다. 십자가를 진다는 것은 주님께 헌신하기 위해 사회적 정치적 억압, 심지어 죽음까지도 각오한다는 것을 선언하는 것입니다. ‘내려놓는 것’, ‘십자가를 지는 것’과 더불어 우리는 주님을 진실로 따를 의지를 가져야 합니다. 이것이 바로 주님께서 우리를 섬김과 헌신으로 인도하실 때 매 순간 주님의 인도를 따르는 자세입니다.

예수님을 따른다는 것은 삶의 일부분만 뒤에 남겨놓는 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 주님의 도움을 입어 우리의 육신과 삶 전체를 오직 주님께만 드리고 헌신하는 것을 말합니다.

MORE THAN A LITTLE PIECE

We all leave a bit of ourselves behind when we move to a new place. But to become a long-term resident of Villas Las Estrellas, Antarctica, a cold and desolate place, leaving a piece of yourself behind is a literal thing. With the nearest hospital 625 miles away, a person will be in serious trouble if their appendix bursts. So every citizen must first undergo an appendectomy before moving there.

Drastic, right? But it’s not as drastic as becoming a resident of the kingdom of God. Because people want to follow Jesus on their own terms and not His (MATTHEW 16:25–27), He redefines what it means to be a disciple. He said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (V. 24). This includes being prepared to let go of anything that competes with Him and His kingdom. And as we take up our cross, we declare a willingness to undergo social and political oppression and even death for the sake of devotion to Christ. Along with letting go and taking up, we’re also to take on a willingness to truly follow Him. This is a moment-by-moment posture of following His lead as He guides us into service and sacrifice.

Following Jesus means so much more than leaving a little piece of our lives behind. As He helps us, it’s about submitting and surrendering our whole lives—including our bodies—to Him alone.

예수님의 집에서

몇 해 전 우리는 주노라는 다 자란 검은 고양이를 집에서 가까운 동물 보호소에서 입양해왔습니다. 나는 쥐만 좀 잡아주면 좋겠다는 생각이었지만 나머지 식구들은 반려동물을 원했습니다. 보호소에서는 주노가 우리 집이 자기 집이라는 것, 곧 자기가 사는 곳이며 항상 음식이 있고 안전한 곳이라는 것을 알 수 있도록, 우리에게 고양이 입양 후 첫 주 동안 엄격히 지켜야 할 배식 지침을 가르쳐주었습니다. 그렇게 해야 혹 주노가 동네로 나가 떠돌다가도 언제나 집으로 돌아온다는 것입니다.

우리도 참된 우리 집이 어딘지 모르면 선한 것과 사랑과 삶의 의미를 찾아 평생 여기저기를 헛되이 떠돌 수 있습니다. 예수님은 참된 삶을 얻으려면 “내 안에 거하라”(요한복음 15:4)고 말씀하셨습니다. 성경학자 프레드릭 데일 브루너는 ‘거하다’(‘거처’라는 유사한 말처럼)라는 말에 가족과 집의 의미가 들어있다고 말합니다. 그래서 브루너는 예수님의 말씀을 이렇게 해석합니다. “내가 있는 집에 거하라.”

예수님은 이 말씀을 설명하시려고 포도나무에 달린 가지 비유를 사용하셨습니다. 나뭇가지가 살려면 반드시 집에 있어야 하고, 속한 곳에 단단히 고정되어야(거해야) 합니다.

우리의 문제를 해결해 주겠다거나, 뭔가 새로운 “지혜”나 멋진 미래를 제공하겠다는 헛된 약속으로 우리를 현혹하는 목소리가 많이 있습니다. 하지만 참된 삶을 살려면 예수님 안에 머물러야 합니다. 그분의 집에 거해야 합니다.

AT HOME IN JESUS

Several years ago, we brought home an adult black cat named Juno from the local animal shelter. Truthfully, I only wanted help thinning our mice population, but the rest of the family wanted a pet. The shelter gave us rigorous instructions on how to establish a feeding routine that first week so Juno would learn our house was his home, the place he belonged and where he’d always have food and safety. This way, even if Juno might roam, he would always eventually come home.

If we don’t know our true home, we’re forever tempted to roam in vain search for goodness, love, and meaning. If we want to find our true life, however, Jesus said, “Abide in me” (JOHN 15:4 ESV). Biblical scholar Frederick Dale Bruner highlights how abide (like a similar word abode) evokes a sense of family and home. So Bruner translates Jesus’ words this way: “Stay at home in me.”

To drive this idea home, Jesus used the illustration of branches attached to a vine. Branches, if they want to live, must always stay at home, tenaciously fixed (abiding) where they belong.

There are many voices beckoning us with hollow promises to fix our problems or provide us some new “wisdom” or exhilarating future. But if we’re to truly live, we must remain in Jesus. We must stay at home.

하나님 안에서 힘을 얻기

축구 선수 크리스티안 풀리식은 몇 차례 부상으로 선수 경력에 큰 지장을 입었습니다. 그는 챔피언스 리그 4강전 선발 명단에 들지 못할 거라는 것을 알고 실망했지만, 나중에 그에게 역사하셨던 하나님을 이렇게 전했습니다. “늘 그러듯, 제가 하나님께 나아가면 하나님은 저에게 힘을 주십니다. 누군가가 항상 제 곁에 있다는 걸 느끼지요. 이 느낌이 없다면 모든 것을 어떻게 해낼 수 있을지 모르겠습니다.” 풀리식은 경기 후반에 교체 투입되어 그날 경기에 크게 기여했습니다. 그의 영리한 플레이로 팀은 결승골을 넣을 수 있었고 챔피언십 결승 진출권도 따냈습니다. 이런 경험들을 통해 그는 우리의 연약함이 곧 하나님께서 그분의 무한한 능력을 드러내시는 기회라는 귀중한 교훈을 얻었습니다.

문제를 만나면 세상은 자신의 힘에 의지하라고 가르칩니다. 하지만 성경이 주는 지혜는 아무리 힘든 상황에서도 하나님의 은혜와 능력이 우리의 힘이 된다는 것을 가르쳐 줍니다(고린도후서 12:9). 그러므로 우리는 시련을 혼자서 겪지 않는다는 것을 알고 담대히 나아갈 수 있습니다. “연약함”은 우리의 힘과 도움이 되시는 하나님의 능력이 나타날 수 있는 기회입니다(9-10절). 그러므로 우리는 고통을 통해 하나님을 찬양할 수 있고, 그분의 선하심에 감사드리며 다른 이들에게 이것을 간증하여 그들도 하나님의 사랑을 경험할 수 있게 됩니다.

FINDING STRENGTH IN GOD

Soccer player Christian Pulisic faced several injuries that influenced his career. After learning he wouldn’t be in the starting lineup of the Champions League semifinals game, he was disappointed, but he described how God had revealed Himself to him. “As always, I reach out to God, and He gives me strength,” he said. “I feel like I always have Someone who’s with me. I don’t know how I would do any of this without that feeling.” Pulisic ultimately made a momentous impact when he was substituted later in the game. He initiated a clever play that led to the game-winning shot and secured their spot in the championship. These experiences taught him a valuable lesson: we can always view our weaknesses as opportunities for God to reveal His immeasurable power.

The world teaches us to rely on our own strength when encountering problems. However, biblical wisdom teaches us that God’s grace and power give us strength in the most trying circumstances (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9). Therefore, we can move in confidence, recognizing that we never face trials alone. Our “weaknesses” become opportunities for God to reveal His power, strengthening and supporting us (VV. 9–10). We can then use our struggles to offer praise to God, giving thanks for His goodness and sharing these encounters with others so that they can come to experience His love.

청석으로 만든 교회 종

청석(Bluestone)은 매우 흥미로운 돌입니다. 어떤 청석은 톡 치면 맑은 음을 냅니다. 영국 웨일스에는 “종” 또는 “울리는 돌”이라는 의미의 멘클로초그라는 마을이 있는데, 그곳에서는 18세기까지 청석을 교회의 종으로 사용했습니다. 흥미롭게도 영국의 스톤헨지 유적 또한 청석으로 지어졌습니다. 그래서 어떤 사람들은 그 유적지가 원래 음악과 연관된 목적으로 지어진 것은 아닐까 추측하기도 합니다. 어떤 연구원들은 스톤헨지의 독특한 음향적 특성을 볼 때 사용된 청석이 200마일가량(약 320킬로미터) 떨어진 멘클로초그 근교에서 옮겨진 것이라고 주장합니다.

하나님의 경이로운 창조물의 하나인 맑은 음을 울리는 청석은 예수님이 종려주일에 예루살렘에 입성하시며 하신 말씀을 떠올려 줍니다. 사람들이 예수님을 찬양하자 종교지도자들이 예수님에게 그들을 꾸짖으라고 요구했지만, 예수님은 이렇게 대답하셨습니다. “내가 너희에게 말하노니 만일 이 사람들이 침묵하면 돌들이 소리 지르리라”(누가복음 19:40).

청석이 음악 소리를 낼 수 있고 돌들이 창조주를 증거할 수 있다고 예수님께서 말씀하셨다면, 우리를 창조하시고 사랑하시고 구원하신 분을 우리가 어떻게 찬양해야 마땅할까요? 하나님은 모든 경배를 받기에 합당하십니다. 성령님이 우리 마음을 움직여 우리가 그분이 받으시기에 합당한 영광을 드릴 수 있기를 바랍니다. 모든 피조물이 주님을 찬양하고 있습니다.

BLUESTONE CHURCH BELLS

Bluestone is a fascinating variety of rock. When struck, certain bluestones will ring with a musical tone. Maenclochog, a Welsh village whose name means “bell” or “ringing stones,” used bluestones as church bells until the eighteenth century. Interestingly, the ruins of Stonehenge, in England, are built of bluestone, causing some to wonder if that landmark’s original purpose was musical. Some researchers claim that the bluestone at Stonehenge was brought from near Maenclochog, nearly two hundred miles away, because of their unique acoustic properties.

Musical ringing stones are yet another of the wonders of God’s great creation, and they remind us of something Jesus said during His Palm Sunday entry into Jerusalem. As the people praised Jesus, the religious leaders demanded Him to rebuke them. “ ‘I tell you,’ he replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out’ ” (LUKE 19:40).

If bluestone can make music, and if Jesus made mention of even the stones bearing witness to their Creator, how might we express our own praise to the One who made us, loves us, and rescued us? He is worthy of all worship. May the Holy Spirit stir us to give Him the honor He deserves. All of creation praises Him.

피부보다 깊은 곳에

호세라는 젊은 신자가 형의 교회를 방문했습니다. 형은 예배가 시작되기 전 예배당에 들어온 호세를 보자 안색이 굳어졌습니다. 티셔츠를 입은 호세의 양팔에 새겨진 문신이 훤히 보였기 때문이었습니다. 동생의 과거를 짐작케 하는 문신들 때문에 당황한 형은 호세에게 집에 가서 긴 팔 셔츠로 갈아입고 오라고 말했습니다. 호세는 갑자기 창피한 생각이 들었습니다. 그때 옆에서 형제의 대화를 듣고 있던 한 남자가 호세를 목사님에게 데려가 방금 있었던 일을 설명해주었습니다. 목사님은 미소를 지으며 자신의 셔츠 단추를 풀어서 오래전에 가슴에 새겼던 커다란 문신을 보여주었습니다. 목사님은 호세에게 하나님께서 그를 완전히 깨끗게 하셨으니 더 이상 팔을 가릴 필요가 없다고 말하며 안심시켜 주었습니다.

다윗은 하나님으로 인해 정결케 되는 기쁨을 경험했습니다. 그는 자신의 죄를 고백한 후 이렇게 기록했습니다. “허물의 사함을 받고 자신의 죄가 가려진 자는 복이 있도다”(시편 32:1). 그는 이제 “마음이 정직한” 사람들과 함께 “기뻐하며 즐거워할 수” 있었습니다(11절)! 훗날 바울 사도는 로마서 4:7-8 에서 시편 32:1-2을 인용하여 예수님을 믿으면 구원을 얻고 정결케 된다고 선포했습니다(로마서 4:23-25 참조).

예수님께 받은 정결함은 우리의 피부보다 더 깊은 데까지 이릅니다. 그분은 우리의 마음을 아시고 정결케 하시기 때문입니다(사무엘상 16:7; 요한1 서 1:9). 정결케 하시는 그분으로 오늘 기쁜 하루를 보낼 수 있기를 바랍니다.

MORE THAN SKIN DEEP

José, a young believer in Jesus, was visiting his brother’s church. As he entered the sanctuary prior to the service, his brother’s face fell when he saw him. José’s tattoos, covering both arms, were visible since he was wearing a T-shirt. His brother told him to go home and put on a long-sleeved shirt, for many of José’s tattoos reflected the ways of his past. José suddenly felt dirty. But another man overheard the brothers’ interaction and brought José to the pastor, telling him what had happened. The pastor smiled and unbuttoned his shirt, revealing a large tattoo on his chest—something from his own past. He assured José that because God had made him pure from the inside out, he didn’t need to cover his arms.

David experienced the joy of being made pure by God. After confessing his sin to Him, the king wrote, “Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight!” (PSALM 32:1 nlt). He could now “shout for joy” with others “whose hearts are pure!” (V. 11 NLT). The apostle Paul later quoted Psalm 32:1–2 in Romans 4:7–8, a passage declaring that faith in Jesus leads to salvation and a pure standing before Him (SEE ROMANS 4:23–25).

Our purity in Jesus is much more than skin deep, for He knows and purifies our hearts (1 SAMUEL 16:7; 1 JOHN 1:9). May we rejoice in His purifying work today.

하나님 안에서 보장된 안식

중국 푸젠 지역의 연구원들은 중환자실의 환자들이 잠을 잘 자도록 돕고 싶었습니다. 그들은 병원용의 환한 조명과 기계들이 내는 삐 소리와 간호사들이 말하는 소리 등이 그대로 재현된 중환자실을 꾸며 놓고 수면 보조 장치가 실험 대상자들에게 나타내는 효과를 측정했습니다. 그들의 연구는 수면 마스크나 귀마개 같은 도구들이 실험 대상이 된 사람들의 휴식을 증진시킨다는 것을 보여주었습니다. 그러나 그들은 실제로 중환자실에 있는 정말 심각한 중환자들은 여전히 숙면을 취하기 어렵다는 사실을 인정했습니다.

REST ASSURED IN GOD

Researchers in Fujian, China, wanted to help intensive care unit (ICU) patients sleep more soundly. They measured the effects of sleep aids on test subjects in a simulated ICU environment, complete with bright, hospital-grade lighting and audio recordings of machines beeping and nurses talking. Their research showed that tools like sleep masks and ear plugs improved their subjects’ rest. But they acknowledged that for truly sick patients in a real ICU, peaceful sleep would still be hard to come by.

When our world is troubled, how can we find rest? The Bible’s clear: there’s peace for those who trust in God, regardless of their circumstances. The prophet Isaiah wrote about a future time when the ancient Israelites would be restored after hardship. They would live securely in their city, because they knew that God made it safe (ISAIAH 26:1). They would trust that He was actively working in the world around them to bring good—“He humbles those who dwell on high,” raising up the oppressed, and bringing justice (VV. 5–6). They would know that “the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal,” and they could trust Him forever (V. 4).

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast,” wrote Isaiah, “because they trust in you” (V. 3). God can provide peace and rest for us today as well. We can rest in the assurance of His love and power, no matter what’s going on around us. - KAREN PIMPO
