겸손의 날

나는 사람들이 만들어내는 비공식적인 기념일로 인해 자주 즐거움을 느낍니다. 2월에만도 ‘찐득한 빵의 날’, ‘칼을 삼키는 자의 날’, 심지어 ‘개 비스킷 감사의 날’이 있습니다! 그리고 오늘은 ‘겸손의 날’ 로 지정되었습니다. 보편적인 미덕으로 인정되는 겸손은 확실히 기념할 만한 가치가 있지만, 흥미롭게도 겸손이 언제나 그랬던 것은 아닙니다.

‘명예’를 중시했던 고대 세계에서 겸손은 미덕이 아니라 약점으로 여겨졌습니다. 자신의 공적을 자랑하는 것이 당연시되었고, 지위를 높이려고 했지 결코 낮추려 하지 않았습니다. 겸손은 마치 주인을 섬기는 하인처럼 열등함을 의미했습니다. 그러나 예수님이 십자가에 못 박히심으로 이 모든 것이 바뀌었다고 역사가들은 말합니다. “근본 하나님의 본체”이신 그분이 하늘의 자리를 버리고 “종”이 되어 십자가에서 다른 사람들을 위해 죽기까지 “자신을 낮추신”(빌립보서 2:6-8) 것입니다. 칭송받아야 할 그런 행동 하나로 겸손의 정의가 달라졌습니다. 1세기 말에 이르러서는 세속적인 저술가들조차 그리스도께서 하신 일로 말미암아 겸손을 미덕이라고 불렀습니다.

오늘날 누군가가 겸손하다고 칭찬받을 때마다 복음이 미묘하게 전해지고 있는 것입니다. 예수님이 아니었다면 겸손은 “좋은 것”이 될 수 없었고 ‘겸손의 날’은 생각할 수도 없었을 것입니다. 그리스도께서 우리를 위해 자신의 지위를 포기하심으로 모든 역사에 걸쳐 하나님의 겸손하신 본성을 나타내 보여주셨습니다.

BE HUMBLE DAY

I’m often amused by the unofficial holidays people come up with. February alone has a Sticky Bun Day, a Sword Swallowers Day, even a Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day! Today has been labeled Be Humble Day. Universally recognized as a virtue, humility is certainly worth celebrating. But interestingly, this hasn’t always been the case.

Humility was considered a weakness, not a virtue, in the ancient world, which prized honor instead. Boasting about one’s achievements was expected, and you sought to raise your status, never lower it. Humility meant inferiority, like a servant to a master. But all this changed, historians say, at Jesus’ crucifixion. There, the One who was “in very nature God” gave up His divine status to become “a servant” and humbled himself” to die for others (PHILIPPIANS 2:6–8). Such a praiseworthy act forced humility to be redefined. By the end of the first century, even secular writers were calling humility a virtue because of what Christ had done.

Every time someone is praised for being humble today, the gospel is being subtly preached. For without Jesus, humility wouldn’t be “good,” or a Be Humble Day even thinkable. Christ relinquished His status for us, revealing through all history the humble nature of God.

마음을 지키라

헝가리 태생의 수학자 아브라함 발드는 1938년 미국으로 건너간 후 2차 세계 대전의 승리를 위해 자신의 기술을 제공했습니다. 적의 포격으로부터 군용기를 보호할 방법을 찾고 있었던 미군은 통계연구 그룹이라는 단체에 속해 있던 발드와 그의 동료들에게 적의 포격으로부터 군용기를 더 잘 보호할 수 있는 방법을 찾아 줄 것을 요청했습니다. 그들은 임무를 마치고 돌아온 비행기에서 가장 많이 손상된 곳을 찾는 것으로 조사를 시작했습니다. 그러나 통찰력이 예리한 발드는 돌아온 비행기의 손상은 이들 비행기가 공격을 받고 ‘여전히 생존하여 돌아온’ 경우만을 알려줄 뿐이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그는 가장 우선적으로 추가 무장이 필요한 부분은 추락한 비행기에서 찾을 수 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 그러나 가장 취약한 부분인 엔진을 공격당한 비행기는 추락하여 조사할 수가 없었습니다.

하나님의 가르침에 주의하여 마음을 무장시킨다면 우리는 “[우리 발을] 악에서 떠나게” 할 수 있으며, 확고하게 하나님과 함께 길을 가게 될 것입니다 (27절). 우리는 날마다 적의 땅으로 모험을 떠나지만, 하나님의 지혜가 우리 마음을 지켜주시므로 하나님의 영광을 위해 잘 살아야 하는 사명에 집중할 수 있습니다.

PROTECT YOUR HEART

Hungarian-born mathematician Abraham Wald lent his skills to the World War II efforts after coming to the United States in 1938. The military was looking for ways to protect its aircraft from enemy fire, so Wald and his colleagues at the Statistical Research Group were asked to figure out how to better protect military aircraft to defend against enemy fire. They began by examining returning aircraft to see where they were most damaged. But Wald is credited with the keen insight that damage on returning aircraft represented only where a plane could be hit and still survive. He realized that areas most in need of additional armor would be found on planes that had crashed. Planes hit in the most vulnerable part—the engine—had gone down and therefore couldn’t be examined.

Solomon teaches us about protecting our most vulnerable part—our heart. He instructs his son to “guard [his] heart” because from it everything else flows (PROVERBS 4:23). God’s instructions guide us through life, steering us away from poor decisions and teaching us where to focus our attention.

If we armor our heart by heeding His instructions, we’ll better “keep [our feet] from evil” and remain steadfast on our journey with God (V. 27). We venture into enemy territory every day, but with God’s wisdom guarding our hearts, we can stay focused on our mission to live well for God’s glory.

진정으로 필요한 것

한 젊은 엄마가 식사를 준비하면서 고깃덩어리를 큰 냄비에 넣기 전에 반으로 잘랐습니다. 남편이 왜 고기를 반으로 자르냐고 물으니 아내는 “우리 엄마가 그렇게 하니까요.”라고 대답했습니다.

그러나 남편의 질문에 궁금해진 아내는 어머니에게 그 전통에 대해 물어보았습니다. 그녀는 어머니가 자신이 사용하는 작은 냄비에 들어가게 고기를 잘랐다는 사실을 알고는 충격을 받았습니다. 사실 딸은 큰 냄비를 많이 가지고 있었기 때문에 고기를 자를 필요가 없었던 것입니다.

많은 전통들이 어떤 필요에 의해 시작되지만, 이유를 생각해보지도 않고 이어지다가 그대로 “우리의 방식”이 되어 버립니다. 인간의 전통을 지키고 싶어하는 것은 자연스러운 현상입니다. 바리새인들이 당시에 그랬습니다. 바리새인들은 그들의 종교 규범 중 하나라도 어겨지는 것 같으면 심기가 불편했습니다 (마가복음 7:1-5).

예수님은 바리새인들에게 “너희가 하나님의 계명은 버리고 사람의 전통을 지킨다”(8절)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 전통이 성경의 지혜를 결코 대체해서는 안 된다고 하셨습니다. 하나님을 따르려는 진정한 열망(6-7절)이 있으면 외적인 행동보다 마음의 태도에 초점을 맞추게 된다는 말씀이었습니다.

우리 마음 가까이에 두고 종교적으로 지키는 전통이 있다면, 그 전통에 대해 계속해서 평가해 보는 것이 좋습니다. 하나님께서 진정으로 필요하다고 계시해 주신 것들이 언제나 전통보다 우선 되어야 합니다.

WHAT’S TRULY NEEDED

While preparing a meal, a young mother cut a pot roast in half before she put it in a large pot. Her husband asked her why she cut the meat in half. She replied, “Because that’s the way my mother does it.”

Her husband’s question, however, piqued the woman’s curiosity. So she asked her mother about the tradition. She was shocked to learn that her mother cut the meat so it would fit in the one small pot she used. And because her daughter had many large pots, the act of cutting the meat was unnecessary.

Many traditions begin out of a necessity but are carried on without question—becoming “the way we do it.” It’s natural to want to hold on to human traditions—something the Pharisees were doing in their day. They were distracted by what seemed like the breaking of one of their religious rules (MARK 7:1–5).

As Jesus said to the Pharisees, “You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions” (V. 8). He revealed that traditions should never replace the wisdom of Scripture. A genuine desire to follow God (VV. 6–7) will focus on the attitude of our heart rather than outward actions.

It’s a good idea to consistently evaluate traditions—anything we hold close to our heart and follow religiously. The things that God has revealed to be truly needed should always supersede traditions.

부흥의 날

아루쿤은 호주 북부 지역의 일곱 개 씨족으로 구성된 원주민이 사는 작은 마을입니다. 복음이 100년 전에 그곳에 전해졌지만 때때로 ‘눈에는 눈’ 식의 보복이 행해졌습니다. 2015년에 씨족 간의 긴장이 고조되던 중 살인 사건이 발생하자 가해자의 가족 중 누군가가 그 대가로 죽어야 했습니다.

그러나 2016년 초에 놀라운 일이 일어났습니다. 아루쿤 사람들이 기도로 하나님을 찾기 시작한 것입니다. 전 마을이 부흥하기 시작하면서 회개가 뒤따랐고 곧이어 많은 사람들이 세례를 받았습니다. 사람들은 너무 기뻐 거리에서 춤을 추었고, 살해당한 사람의 가족들은 복수 대신에 가해자 씨족을 용서했습니다. 얼마 지나지 않아 매주 일요일에 1,000명의 사람들이 교회에 모여 예배를 드렸습니다. 겨우 1,300명이 사는 마을에서 말입니다!

성경에서도 이와 같은 부흥을 볼 수 있습니다. 히스기야 시대에 군중들이 기쁘게 하나님께로 돌아왔으며(역대하 30), 오순절에 수천 명의 사람들이 회개했습니다(사도행전 2:38-47). 부흥은 하나님의 때에 하나님에 의해 이루어지지만, 부흥에 앞서 기도가 있었음을 역사를 통해 알 수 있습니다. 하나님은 솔로몬에게 말씀하셨습니다. “만일 내 백성이... 그들의 악한 길에서 떠나 스스로 낮추고 기도하여 내 얼굴을 찾으면 내가 하늘에서 듣고 그들의 죄를 사하고 그들의 땅을 고칠지라”(역대하 7:14).

아루쿤 사람들이 알게 된 것처럼 부흥은 마을에 기쁨과 화해를 가져다줍니다. 우리가 사는 도시에도 그런 변화가 얼마나 필요한지요! 하나님 아버지, 우리에게도 부흥을 가져다주소서.

REVIVAL COMES

Aurukun is a small town in northern Australia—its Aboriginal population drawn from seven clans. While the gospel came to Aurukun a century ago, eye-for-eye retribution sometimes remained. In 2015, clan tensions grew, and when a murder happened, payback required someone from the offender’s family to die in return.

But something remarkable happened in early 2016. The people of Aurukun started seeking God in prayer. Repentance followed, then mass baptisms, as revival began sweeping the town. People were so joyful they danced in the streets, and instead of enacting payback, the family of the murdered man forgave the offending clan. Soon 1,000 people were in church each Sunday—in a town of just 1,300!

We see revivals like this in Scripture, as in Hezekiah’s day when crowds joyfully returned to God (2 CHRONICLES 30), and on the day of Pentecost when thousands repented (ACTS 2:38–47). While revival is God’s work, done in His time, history shows prayer precedes it. “If my people . . . will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways,” God told Solomon, “I will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 CHRONICLES 7:14).

As the people of Aurukun found, revival brings joy and reconciliation to a town. How our own cities need such transformation! Father, bring revival to us too.

기도 카드

내가 교원으로 일하고 있던 저술 관련 학회에서, 손으로 직접 쓴 기도문이 적힌 엽서를 태미로부터 받았습니다. 그녀는 교원들의 약력을 읽고 카드 하나하나에 구체적인 기도문을 쓴 후 기도하면서 우리에게 전달했다고 설명했습니다. 나에게 맞춰 세밀하게 개인적으로 써 준 내용에 감동하며 태미를 통해 격려해 주신 하나님께 감사를 드리고 나도 그녀를 위해 기도했습니다. 학회 기간 동안 아픔과 피로가 몰려오면 그 엽서를 꺼내 보았습니다. 태미의 글을 읽을 때 하나님은 내 영혼에 새로운 힘을 넣어 주셨습니다.

바울 사도는 다른 사람들을 위한 기도가 그들의 삶에 힘을 준다는 것을 알았습니다. 그래서 믿는 자들에게 “하늘에 있는 악의 영들을 상대하여” (에베소서 6:12) 전투를 준비하라고 권면했습니다. 그는 중보기도를 통해 서로를 위해 기도할 것을 강조하면서 지속적이고 구체적으로 기도하라고 권했습니다. 바울은 또한 자신을 위해서도 담대하게 기도해 달라고 부탁했습니다. “또 나를 위하여 구할 것은 내게 말씀을 주사 나로 입을 열어 복음의 비밀을 담대히 알리게 하옵소서 할 것이니 이 일을 위하여 내가 쇠사슬에 매인 사신이 된 것은 나로 이 일에 당연히 할 말을 담대히 하게 하려 하심이라”(19-20절).

우리가 서로를 위해 기도할 때 성령께서 위로하시고 우리의 각오를 새롭게 해 주십니다. 성령님은 우리에게 그분이 필요하고, 또 서로가 필요하며, 조용한 기도와 소리 내어 하는 기도와 카드에 적은 기도 모두를 들으시며, 성령님의 완벽한 뜻에 따라 응답하신다고 확실히 말씀하십니다.

PRAYER CARDS

During a writing conference where I served as a faculty member, Tamy handed me a postcard with a handwritten prayer on the back. She explained that she read the faculty biographies, wrote specific prayers on each card, and prayed as she delivered them to us. In awe over the details in her personal message to me, I thanked God for encouraging me through Tamy’s gesture. Then I prayed for her in return. When I struggled with pain and fatigue during the conference, I pulled out the postcard. God refreshed my spirit as I reread Tamy’s note.

The apostle Paul recognized the life-affirming impact of prayer for others. He urged believers to prepare for battle “against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (EPHESIANS 6:12). He encouraged ongoing and specific prayers, while emphasizing the need to intervene for one another in what we call intercessory prayer. Paul also requested bold prayers on his behalf. “Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains” (VV. 19–20).

As we pray for one another, the Holy Spirit comforts us and strengthens our resolve. He affirms that we need Him and one another, assuring us that He hears every prayer—silent, spoken, or scribbled on a prayer card—and He answers according to His perfect will.

완전히 깨끗해짐

얼마 전 아내와 함께 손님들이 오기 전에 집을 청소하고 있었습니다. 그러다가 하얀 부엌 타일 바닥에 무릎을 꿇고 문질러야 없어질 것 같은 얼룩들이 눈에 띄었습니다.

그러나 곧 실망스럽게도 닦으면 닦을수록 더 많은 ‘다른’ 얼룩들이 눈에 들어왔습니다. 얼룩들을 없애고 나니 이제 다른 얼룩들이 더 두드러져 보였습니다. 갑자기 부엌 바닥이 ‘불가능하리만큼’ 더러워 보였습니다. 매 순간 나는 ‘아무리 애써도 결코 이 바닥을 완벽하게 깨끗이 할 수 없겠다.’는 사실을 깨달았습니다.

성경에도 자신을 깨끗하게 하는 것에 대해 이와 비슷하게 말하고 있습니다. 자신의 힘으로 죄를 해결해 보려고 아무리 애를 써도 언제나 안 된다는 것입니다. 이사야 선지자는 언제나 하나님의 구원을 경험했던 그의 백성 이스라엘에 대해 실망하여(이사야 64:5), “무릇 우리는 다 부정한 자 같아서 우리의 의는 다 더러운 옷 같다”(6절)고 기록하고 있습니다.

그러나 하나님의 선하심을 통해 언제나 희망이 있다는 것을 알았던 이사야는 이렇게 기도했습니다, “여호와여, 이제 주는 우리 아버지시니이다 우리는 진흙이요 주는 토기장이십니다”(8절). 그는 우리는 할 수 없어도, 하나님은 아무리 더러운 얼룩이라도 “눈같이 희도록”(1:18) 깨끗하게 하실 수 있다는 것을 알았습니다.

우리는 영혼에 묻은 죄의 자국과 얼룩을 닦아낼 수 없지만, 감사하게도 우리를 완전히 깨끗하게 하시는 그분의 희생으로 우리는 구원을 받을 수 있게 되었습니다(요한1서 1:7).

CLEANSED COMPLETELY

Recently, my wife and I were cleaning our house before having guests over. I noticed some dark stains on our white kitchen tile floor—the kind that required getting on my knees to scrub.

But I soon had a sinking realization: the more I scrubbed, the more I noticed other stains. Each stain I eliminated only made the others that much more obvious. Our kitchen floor suddenly seemed impossibly dirty. And with each moment, I realized, No matter how hard I work, I can never get this floor completely clean.

Scripture says something similar about self-cleansing—our best efforts at dealing with sin on our own always fall short. Seeming to despair of God’s people, the Israelites, ever experiencing His salvation (ISAIAH 64:5), the prophet Isaiah wrote, “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags” (V. 6).

But Isaiah knew there is always hope through God’s goodness. So he prayed, “You, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter” (V. 8). He knew that God alone can cleanse what we cannot, until the deepest stains are “white as snow” (1:18).

We can’t scrub away the smudges and smears of sin on our souls. Thankfully, we can receive salvation in the One whose sacrifice allows us to be cleansed completely (1 JOHN 1:7).

주님의 빛을 반사하기

화가 아만드 카브레라는 아름답게 반사된 빛을 풍경 유화에 그려 넣을 때 “반사광은 언제나 본래 빛만큼 강할 수 없다”는 미술에서의 주요 원칙을 가지고 작업합니다. 초보 화가들이 반사광을 사실보다 강하게 표현하는 경향이 있음을 관찰한 그는 “반사된 빛은 그늘의 한 부분이기 때문에 그것은 보조하는 역할을 해야지 그림에서 직접 빛을 받는 부분처럼 밝아서는 안 된다.”고 말합니다.

우리는 성경에서 예수님을 “사람들의 빛”(요한복음 1:4)이라고 한 것에서 이와 비슷한 원리를 봅니다. 세례 요한은 “이 빛에 대해서 증거하여 사람들이 자기를 통해 믿도록 하기 위해서 왔습니다”(7절, 현대인의 성경). 복음서의 저자는 “그(요한)는 이 빛이 아니요 이 빛에 대하여 증언하러 온 자라”(8절) 고 말합니다.

우리는 세례 요한과 마찬가지로 믿지 않는 세상의 그늘에 사는 사람들에게 그리스도의 빛을 반사해 비추도록 하나님께 선택받았습니다. 우리가 이 역할을 해야 하는 이유는 어떤 이의 말처럼 “믿지 않는 사람들은 그리스도의 강렬한 영광의 빛을 직접 보는 것을 감당할 수 없을 것이기 때문”입니다.

카브레라는 미술을 배우는 제자들에게 “한 장면을 그릴 때 어떤 물체든지 직접 빛을 받으면 다시 빛을 발하게 되어 있다”고 가르칩니다. 마찬가지로 “모든 사람을 비추는 참 빛”(9절, 현대인의 성경)이신 예수님과 함께 우리도 증인들로 빛날 수 있습니다. 우리가 예수님을 반사할 때 세상이 놀랄 정도로 그의 영광이 우리를 통해 빛날 수 있기를 바랍니다.

REFLECTING HIS LIGHT

To capture the beauty of reflective light in his landscape oil paintings, artist Armand Cabrera works with a key artistic principle: “Reflected light is never as strong as its source light.” He observes that novice painters tend to exaggerate reflected light. He says, “Reflected light belongs to the shadow and as such it must support, not compete with the lighted areas of your painting.”

We hear similar insight in the Bible concerning Jesus as “the light of all mankind” (JOHN 1:4). John the Baptist “came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe” (V. 7). The gospel writer tells us, “He himself [John] was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light” (V. 8).

As with John, we’re chosen by God to reflect Christ’s light to those living in the shadows of an unbelieving world. This is our role, as one source says, “perhaps because unbelievers are not able to bear the full blazing glory of His light firsthand.”

Cabrera teaches his art students that “anything that has direct light falling on it in a scene becomes a source of light itself.” Similarly, with Jesus as “the true light that gives light to everyone” (V. 9), we can shine as witnesses. As we reflect Him, may the world be amazed to see His glory shine through us.

8번 배심원

1957년의 명화 ‘12인의 성난 사람들’에서 판사는 “한 사람이 죽고, 또 한 사람의 생명이 위태롭습니다.”라고 침울하게 말합니다. 젊은 용의자에 대한 증거는 압도적으로 많아 보입니다. 그러나 심의를 하면서 배심원들의 의견이 일치하지 않게 됩니다. 12명 가운데 8번 배심원 한 명이 “무죄”에 표를 던집니다. 열띤 토론 중에 그 유일한 배심원이 증언이 일치 지 않는다고 지적하자 조롱이 날아옵니다. 감정이 격앙되며 배심원들에게서 남을 해칠 수 있는 위험한 성향들이 드러납니다. 그러다가 배심원들은 하나둘씩 자신들의 의견을 무죄로 바꿉니다.

하나님은 새로운 나라 이스라엘에 율법을 주시면서 용기 있게 정직을 지키라고 하셨습니다. 하나님은 “법정에서 증언할 때 대중의 편이 되어 허위 진술을 하지 말라”(출애굽기 23:2, 현대인의 성경)고 하셨습니다. 흥미롭게도, 법원은 “가난한 자의 송사라고 해서 편벽되이 두둔하지 말며”(3절) “가난한 자의 송사라고 정의를 굽게 하지 말아야”(6절) 했습니다. 의로우신 재판장이신 하나님은 모든 송사에서 우리가 정직하기를 원하십니다.

‘12인의 성난 사람들’에서 두 번째로 무죄에 투표한 배심원은 첫 번째 배심원에 대해 “남들의 비웃음에 맞서 홀로 서는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니다.” 라고 말했습니다. 하지만 그것이 바로 하나님이 요구하시는 것입니다. 8번 배심원은 실제 증거뿐만 아니라, 재판받는 그 사람의 인간성도 보았습니다. 조용히 인도하시는 성령님을 따라 우리도 하나님의 진리 위에 서서 힘없는 자들을 대변해야 합니다.

JUROR NUMBER 8

“One man is dead. Another man’s life is at stake,” says the judge somberly in the classic 1957 film 12 Angry Men. The evidence against the young suspect appears overwhelming. But during deliberations, it’s the brokenness of the jury that’s exposed. One of the twelve—juror number 8—votes “not guilty.” A heated debate ensues, in which the lone juror is mocked as he points out discrepancies in the testimony. Emotions escalate, and the jury members’ own murderous and prejudicial tendencies come to light. One by one, the jurors switch their votes to not guilty.

When God gave His instructions to the new nation of Israel, He insisted on honest courage. “When you give testimony in a lawsuit,” God said, “do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd” (EXODUS 23:2). Interestingly, the court was neither to “show favoritism to a poor person” (V. 3) nor to “deny justice to your poor people” (V. 6). God, the righteous judge, desires our integrity in all our proceedings.

In 12 Angry Men, the second juror to vote not guilty said of the first, “It’s not easy to stand alone against the ridicule of others.” Yet that’s what God requires. Juror number 8 saw the real evidence, as well as the humanity of the individual on trial. With the gentle guidance of His Holy Spirit, we too can stand for God’s truth and speak for the powerless.

기뻐하는 사랑

브랜든과 케이티는 서로를 보고 활짝 웃었습니다. 그들의 얼굴에 나타난 순수한 기쁨을 보면 코비드-19 규제 때문에 그들의 결혼 계획이 힘들게 얼마나 많이 극적으로 바뀌어 왔는지 상상도 못할 것입니다. 스물다섯 명의 가족만이 참석했음에도 서로 사랑의 서약을 하고 그들을 지탱해 준 하나님의 사랑에 감사하는 두 사람에게서 기쁨과 평화가 뿜어져 나왔습니다.

신부와 신랑이 서로 기뻐하는 모습은 바로 이사야 선지자가 자기 백성들을 향한 하나님의 기쁨과 사랑을 묘사하기 위해 그린 그림과 같습니다. 이사야는 하나님이 약속하신 구원을 아름다운 시로 표현하면서, 하나님이 그들에게 주신 구원은 마음이 상한 자를 고치시고, 슬퍼하는 자에게 기쁨을 주며, 그의 백성들의 필요를 공급하시는(이사야 61:1-3) 것과 같이 깨어진 세상에 사는 현실을 반영하는 것임을 상기시켜 주었습니다. 하나님이 그의 백성들에게 도움을 주신 것은 마치 신랑과 신부가 서로의 사랑을 기뻐하는 것처럼 “네 하나님이 너를 기뻐하시기”(62:5) 때문입니다.

REJOICING LOVE

Brendan and Katie beamed at each other. Looking at the pure joy on their faces, you would have never guessed the difficult ways so many of their wedding plans had been dramatically altered due to COVID-19 restrictions. Even with only twenty-five family members present, joy and peace radiated from the two as they said their vows because of their love for each other and expressed their gratefulness for God’s love sustaining them.

The image of a bride and groom delighting over each other is the picture the prophet Isaiah painted to describe the type of delight and love God has for His people. In a beautifully poetic description of God’s promised deliverance, Isaiah reminded his readers that the salvation God offered them reflected the reality of living in a broken world—comfort for the brokenhearted, joy for those who mourn, and provision for the needs of His people (ISAIAH 61:1–3). God offered help to His people because, just like a bride and groom celebrate their love for each other, “so will your God rejoice over you” (62:5).

It’s a remarkable truth that God delights in us and wants a relationship with us. Even when we struggle because of the effects of living in a broken world, we have a God who loves us, not begrudgingly, but with a rejoicing, lasting love that “endures forever” (PSALM 136:1).

심한 고통 중에

오래전, 한 친구가 여러 도로가 만나는 한 교차로를 건널 때 겁이 많이 났었다는 이야기를 내게 했었습니다. “나는 한 번도 이런 걸 본 적이 없어. 그동안 배웠던 길 건너는 규칙은 아무 소용도 없었어. 나는 너무 무서워서 한쪽 구석에 서서 버스를 기다렸다가 버스 기사에게 나를 길 건너에 태워다 줄 수 있는지 물어봤어. 걸어서 가든, 나중에 차로 가든 그런 교차로를 제대로 지날 수 있으려면 시간이 많이 걸릴 거야.”

위험한 교차로가 아무리 복잡하다 해도, 복잡한 삶을 헤쳐 나가는 것이 훨씬 더 위협적일 수 있습니다. 시편 118편에서 시편 기자가 처한 특별한 상황이 어떤 것인지는 분명하지 않지만, 그것이 힘들고 반드시 기도해야 할 상황임을 알 수 있습니다. “내가 고통 중에 여호와께 부르짖었다”(5절)고 시편 기자는 외칩니다. 그리고 하나님에 대한 그의 확신은 명백했습니다. “여호와는 내 편이시라 내가 두려워하지 아니하리니... 여호와께서 내 편이 되사 나를 돕는 자들 중에 계시니”(6-7절).

직장이나 학교, 혹은 집을 옮겨야 할 때 우리는 보통 두려움을 느낍니다. 건강이 악화되거나 인간관계에 변화가 생길 때, 혹은 돈이 사라질 때 불안이 엄습합니다. 그러나 하나님이 나를 버렸기 때문에 이런 어려운 일들이 생긴다고 해석해서는 안 됩니다. 우리 모두 심한 고통 중에도 기도로 하나님 앞으로 힘써 나아갈 수 있기를 바랍니다.

WHEN HARD PRESSED

Many years ago, a friend told me how intimidated she was while trying to cross a street where several roads intersected. “I’d never seen anything like this; the rules I’d been taught for crossing the street seemed ineffective. I was so frightened that I’d stand on the corner, wait for the bus, and ask the bus driver if he’d please allow me to ride to the other side of the street. It would take a long time before I successfully learned to navigate this intersection both as a pedestrian and later as a driver.”

As complicated as a dangerous traffic intersection can be, navigating life’s complexities can be even more menacing. Although the psalmist’s specific situation in Psalm 118 is uncertain, we know it was difficult and just right for prayer: “When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord” (V. 5), the psalmist exclaimed. And his confidence in God was unmistakable: “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. . . . The Lord is with me; he is my helper” (VV. 6–7).

It’s not unusual to be fearful when we need to change jobs or schools or housing. Anxieties arise when health declines, relationships change, or dollars disappear. But these challenges needn’t be interpreted as abandonment by God. When hard pressed, may we find ourselves prayerfully pressing into His presence.
