우리 이름을 아시는 하나님

입양으로 헤어진 두 형제가 거의 20년이 지나서 유전자 검사의 도움으로 재회하게 되었습니다. 키에론이 그의 형제라고 생각한 빈센트에게 문자를 보냈을 때, 빈센트는 ‘이 낯선 사람은 누구지?’라고 생각했습니다. 키에론이 빈센트에게 태어났을 때의 이름을 묻자 그가 즉시 “ 타일러”라고 대답했습니다. 그러자 키에론은 자신들이 형제라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이름으로 알아본 것입니다!

부활절 이야기에서 이름이 얼마나 중요한 역할을 하는지 생각해 보십시오. 알려진 것처럼 막달라 마리아가 예수님 무덤에 갔을 때 예수님의 시신이 사라진 것을 보고 흐느껴 울고 있었습니다. 예수님은 “여자여 어찌하여 우느냐” (요한복음20:15)고 물으셨습니다. 그러나 마리아는 예수님이 “마리아야”(16절) 하고 이름을 부르시기 전까지 주님을 알아보지 못했습니다.

마리아는 예수님이 자신의 이름을 부르는 것을 듣고 “히브리 말로 랍오니 (선생님이란 뜻)”라고 외쳤습니다(16절). 마리아의 반응은 예수님을 믿는 자들이 부활절 아침에 느끼는 기쁨을 잘 표현합니다. 그 기쁨은 부활하신 예수님이 모든 사람을 위해 사망을 이기신 것과 우리 각 사람이 그분의 자녀임을 아는 기쁨입니다. 예수님이 마리아에게 “내가 내 아버지 곧 너희 아버지, 내 하나님 곧 너의 하나님께로 올라간다”(17절)고 말씀하셨던 것처럼 말입니다.

이름으로 연결되어 조지아에서 다시 만난 두 형제는 “관계를 한층 더” 발전시키기로 다짐했습니다. 부활절에 우리는 예수님을 찬양합니다. 이는 예수님이 그의 자녀로 삼으신 자들을 위해 희생적인 사랑으로 이미 극한의 과정을 거치고 부활하셨기 때문입니다. 주님은 진실로 당신과 나를 위해 살아나셨습니다!

KNOWN BY GOD

After two brothers were separated by adoption, a DNA test helped to reunite them almost twenty years later. When Kieron texted Vincent, the man he believed was his brother, Vincent thought, Who is this stranger? When Kieron asked him what name he’d been given at birth, he immediately answered, “Tyler.” Then he knew they were brothers. He was recognized by his name!

Consider how a name plays a key role in the Easter story. As it unfolds, Mary Magdalene comes to Christ’s tomb, and she weeps when she finds His body missing. “Woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asks (JOHN 20:15). She didn’t recognize Him, however, until He spoke her name: “Mary” (V. 16).

Hearing Him say it, she “cried out in Aramaic, ‘Rabboni!’ (Which means ‘Teacher’)” (V. 16). Her reaction expresses the joy believers in Jesus feel on Easter morning, recognizing that our risen Christ conquered death for all, knowing each of us as His children. As He told Mary, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God” (V. 17).

In Georgia, two reunited brothers bonded by name, vowed to take “this relationship to the next level.” On Easter, we praise Jesus for already taking the utmost step to rise in sacrificial love for those He knows as His own. For you and me, indeed, He’s alive!

진실을 찾는 자들

한 여인이 나에게 자신의 교회가 의견이 달라 갈라졌다는 이야기를 했습니다. “어떤 의견이 달랐나요?”라고 묻자, 그녀는 “지구가 평평한지 아닌지”에 대한 것이었다고 대답했습니다. 몇 달 뒤, 한 음식점의 뒷방에서 아이들이 학대받고 있는 것으로 추측하여 그 아이들을 구하려고 무기를 가지고 난입한 한 기독교인에 대한 이야기가 뉴스에 나왔습니다. 하지만 그 음식점에 뒷방은 없었으며, 그 남자는 체포되었습니다. 이 두 경우 모두, 관련된 사람들이 인터넷에서 읽은 거짓 음모론에 현혹되어 행동한 것이었습니다.

예수님을 믿는 사람들은 좋은 시민이 되어야 합니다(로마서 13:1-7). 그리고 좋은 시민은 잘못된 정보를 퍼뜨리지 않습니다. 누가가 살던 때에도 예수님에 관한 많은 이야기가 돌았는데(누가복음 1:1), 그중 사실과 다른 이야기들도 있었습니다. 누가는 그가 들은 것들을 모두 전하기보다는 마치 탐사 전문 기자처럼 목격자들과 대화하고(2절), “근원부터 자세히 미루어” 살핀 후에(3절), 검증 안 된 주장은 배제하고 목격자들로부터 들은 이름과 말, 그리고 역사적인 사실들을 복음서에 기록했습니다.

우리도 이같이 할 수 있습니다. 거짓된 정보는 교회를 분열시키고 사람들을 위태롭게 하므로 우리가 사실을 확인하는 것이 곧 이웃 사랑을 실천하는 것입니다(10:27). 혹 깜짝 놀랄 만한 이야기가 들리면 우리는 자격 있고 신뢰할 만한 전문가에게 그것이 사실인지를 확인함으로써 거짓을 퍼뜨리는 자가 아니라 진실을 찾는 자가 될 수 있습니다. 그런 행동은 우리가 전하는 복음에 신뢰를 더해줍니다. 무엇보다도 우리는 진실로 가득 찬 주님을 경배하는 사람들입니다(요한복음 1:14).

TRUTH SEEKERS

A woman once told me about a disagreement that was tearing her church apart. “What’s the disagreement about?” I asked. “Whether the earth is flat,” she said. A few months later, news broke of a Christian man who’d burst into a restaurant, armed, to rescue children supposedly being abused in its back room. There was no back room, and the man was arrested. In both cases, the people involved were acting on conspiracy theories they’d read on the internet.

Believers in Jesus are called to be good citizens (ROMANS 13:1–7), and good citizens don’t spread misinformation. In Luke’s day, numerous stories circulated about Jesus (LUKE 1:1), some of them were inaccurate. Instead of passing on everything he heard, Luke essentially became an investigative journalist, talking to eyewitnesses (V. 2), researching “everything from the beginning” (V. 3), and writing his findings into a gospel that contains names, quotes, and historical facts based on people with firsthand knowledge, not unverified claims.

We can do the same. Since false information can split churches and put lives at risk, checking facts is an act of loving our neighbor (10:27). When a sensational story comes our way, we can verify its
claims with qualified, accountable experts, being truth seekers— not error spreaders. Such an act brings credibility to the gospel. After all, we worship the One who’s full of truth (JOHN 1:14).

카슨은 사냥과 낚시를 하고 비포장도로에서 오토바이를 타며 스케이트보드를 즐기느라 항상 바빴습니다. 그는 모든 야외활동을 즐겼습니다. 그런데 오토바이 사고로 그는 하반신 마비가 되고 말았습니다. 그는 곧 우울증에 빠졌고, 미래에 대한 희망을 잃어버렸습니다. 그러던 어느 날 친구 몇 명이 그를 다시 사냥터로 데리고 갔습니다. 카슨은 한참 동안 자신의 상처를 잊고 주변의 아름다운 경치를 즐겼습니다. 그 경험으로 내적 치유와 삶의 새로운 목적을 얻은 그는 다른 사람들도 같은 경험을 할 수 있도록 ‘치유를 위한 사냥’(Hunt 2 Heal)이라는 비영리단체를 세웠습니다. 그는 자신의 사고가 “위장된 축복이며 이제 나는 항상 바라던 대로 돌려주는 삶을 살 수 있게 되었습니다. 그래서 행복합니다”라고 말합니다. 그러면서 심각한 신체장애를 가진 사람들과 그 보호자들이 치유받을 수 있는 자리를 제공하는 일에 신이 나 있습니다.

HUNT FOR INNER HEALING

Always a busy guy, Carson hunted, fished, rode dirt bikes, and skateboarded. He loved everything outdoors. But he was in a motorcycle accident and became paralyzed from the chest down. Soon depression sank in, and he didn’t see much of a future. Then one day some of his buddies got him to go hunting again. For a time he forgot about his injury as he enjoyed the beauty around him. This experience brought him inner healing and inspired a new purpose for his life—to provide the same experience for others like him through a nonprofit organization, Hunt 2 Heal. He says his accident was “a blessing in disguise. . . . Now I’m able to give back, which I’ve always wanted to do. I’m happy.” He’s excited about providing a place for those with severe mobility disabilities and their caregivers to find healing.

The prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of One who would bring healing for brokenness (ISAIAH 61). He would “bind up the brokenhearted” and “comfort all who mourn” (VV. 1–2). After Jesus read this Scripture in His hometown synagogue, He said, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (LUKE 4:21). Jesus came to save us and make us whole.

Are you in need of inner healing? Turn to Jesus and He’ll give you “a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair” (ISAIAH 61:3).

감사하는 마음

핸슬 파치먼트는 곤경에 처했습니다. 도쿄 올림픽에서 준결승전에 참가해야 하는데 버스를 잘못 타서 제시간에 경기장에 도착하기 어려운 상황에 놓였기 때문입니다. 다행히 올림픽 자원봉사자 트리야나 스토이코비치를 만나 그녀가 준 택시비로 제시간에 준결승전에 참가하여, 마침내는 110 미터 장애물 경주에서 금메달을 획득할 수 있었습니다. 그는 나중에 스토이코비치를 찾아가 그녀의 친절에 감사를 표했습니다.

누가복음 17장에는 예수님께 돌아와 감사한 고침 받은 사마리아인 나병환자 이야기가 나옵니다(15-16절). 예수님은 어느 한마을에 들어가 열 명의 나병환자를 만났습니다. 예수님에게 고쳐 달라고 간구한 그들은 예수님의 은혜와 능력으로 모두 깨끗함을 받게 되었습니다. 열 명 모두 다 고침을 받아 기뻐했지만 오직 한 사람만이 돌아와 감사를 표현했습니다. 그는 “큰 소리로 하나님께 영광을 돌리며 돌아와 예수의 발 아래에 엎드리어 감사했습니다”(15-16절).

우리는 매일 여러 모습으로 하나님의 축복을 경험합니다. 그것은 오랜 고통 끝에 극적으로 받은 기도 응답이거나, 낯선 사람으로부터 제때에 받은 도움일 수 있습니다. 때로는 좋은 날씨 덕분에 실외 작업을 마칠 수 있는 것과 같이 아주 평범한 하나님의 축복일 수도 있습니다. 예수님께 돌아와 감사한 사마리아인 나병환자처럼 우리를 향한 하나님의 자비에 대해 잊지 않고 감사하도록 합시다.

THANKFUL HEARTS

Hansle Parchment was in a predicament. He caught the bus to the wrong place for his semifinal in the Tokyo Olympics and was left stranded with little hope of getting to the stadium on time. But thankfully he met Trijana Stojkovic, a volunteer helping out at the games. She gave him some money to take a taxi. Parchment made it to the semifinal on time and eventually clinched the gold medal in the 110-meter hurdle. Later, he went back to find Stojkovic and thanked her for her kindness.

In Luke 17, we read of the Samaritan leper who came back to thank Jesus for healing him (VV. 15–16). Jesus had entered a village where He met ten lepers. All of them asked Jesus for healing, and all of them experienced His grace and power. Ten were happy that they’d been healed, but only one returned to express his gratitude. He “came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him” (VV. 15–16).

Every day, we experience God’s blessings in multiple ways. It could be as dramatic as an answered prayer to an extended time of suffering or receiving timely help from a stranger. Sometimes, His blessings can come in ordinary ways too, such as good weather to accomplish an outdoor task. Like the Samaritan leper, let’s remember to thank God for His kindness toward us.

은혜와 변화

아주 끔찍한 범죄를 저지른 남자가 무기징역을 선고받았습니다. 그 후 몇 년 동안 그는 독방에 갇혀 있으면서 정신적, 영적인 치유의 과정을 거치며 마침내 회개하고 예수님과의 관계를 회복했습니다. 최근에는 다른 수감자들과 제한적인 교류도 허락받았습니다. 그리고 하나님의 은혜로, 그의 간증을 통해 몇몇 동료 수감자들이 그리스도를 구주로 영접하고 하나님의 용서를 받았습니다.

지금은 위대한 믿음의 사람으로 인정받지만 모세도 한때 끔찍한 범죄를 저질렀습니다. “한 애굽 사람이 히브리 사람을 치는” 것을 보고, “좌우를” 살피고는 “그 애굽 사람을 죽인” 것입니다(출애굽기 2:11-12). 그 같은 범죄에도 불구하고 은혜의 하나님은 그 부족한 종을 내치지 않으시고, 훗날 모세를 선택하여 그분의 백성을 애굽의 압제에서 해방시키셨습니다(3:10). 로마서 5 장 14절은 “아담으로부터 모세까지 아담의 범죄와 같은 죄를 짓지 아니한 자들까지도 사망이 왕 노릇 하였다”고 말합니다. 그러나 이어진 말씀에서 바울은 우리가 과거에 지은 죄에도 불구하고 “하나님의 은혜”로 변화되어 의롭게 되는 것이 가능하게 되었다고 말합니다(15-16절).

우리는 지은 죄 때문에 하나님의 용서를 받고 하나님의 영광을 위해 사용될 자격이 없다고 생각할지도 모릅니다. 그러나 하나님의 은혜로 우리가 예수님 안에서 변화되고 자유롭게 되어 다른 사람들이 영생을 바라며 변화될 수 있도록 도와줄 수 있게 되었습니다.

GRACE AND CHANGE

The crime was shocking, and the man who committed it was sentenced to life in prison. In the years that followed, the man—in solitary confinement—began a process of mental and spiritual healing. It led to repentance and a restored relationship with Jesus. These days he’s been allowed limited interactions with other inmates. And, by God’s grace, through his witness some fellow prisoners have received Christ as Savior—finding forgiveness in Him.

Moses, though now recognized as a great man of faith, also committed a shocking crime. After he witnessed “an Egyptian beating a Hebrew,” he looked “this way and that” and “killed the Egyptian” (EXODUS 2:11–12). Despite this sin, God in His grace wasn’t done with His imperfect servant. Later, He chose Moses to free His people from their oppression (3:10). In Romans 5:14, we read, “Death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command.” But in the following verses Paul states that “God’s grace” makes it possible for us, regardless of our past sins, to be changed and made right with Him (VV. 15–16).

We might think that what we’ve done disqualifies us from knowing God’s forgiveness and being used for His honor. But because of His grace, in Jesus we can be changed and set free to help others be changed for eternity.

기도하며 하는 수술

아들이 정형외과 수술을 받았을 때 그 수술을 담당한 의사에게 고마웠습니다. 은퇴를 앞두고 있는 그는 같은 문제를 가진 수천 명의 사람을 도와주었다면서 우리를 안심시켰습니다. 그런 경륜이 있음에도 그는 기도하며 이번 수술이 잘 되도록 하나님께 간구했습니다. 그리고 하나님이 그 기도에 응답하셔서 너무나 감사합니다.

경륜 있는 국가 지도자 여호사밧도 위기를 맞았을 때 기도했습니다. 그를 대적해 세 나라가 연합하여 그의 백성을 공격해 왔습니다. 20년 이상 전쟁을 경험해 봤지만 그는 이 상황에서 어떻게 해야 할지 하나님께 물으며 기도했습니다. “[우리가] 이 환난 가운데에서 주께 부르짖은즉 들으시고 구원하시리라 하였나이다”(역대하 20:9). 그는 또 “우리가 대적할 능력이 없고 어떻게 할 줄도 알지 못하옵고 오직 주만 바라보나이다”(12절)라고 하며 하나님의 인도하심을 구했습니다.

위기에 처한 여호사밧이 겸손한 자세로 마음을 열어 하나님이 관여해 주시기를 구하자, 하나님은 그에게 용기를 주시고 그분의 능력으로 개입하여 도와주셨습니다(15-17, 22절). 우리가 어떤 일에 아무리 많은 경험을 가졌어도, 하나님의 도움을 바라는 기도는 하나님에 대한 거룩한 신뢰를 형성해 줍니다. 그런 기도는 하나님께서 우리보다 더 잘 아시고 그분이 궁극적으로 주관하시는 분이심을 다시 깨닫게 해줍니다. 또한 그런 기도는 결과에 상관없이 하나님께서 기쁨으로 우리에게 응답하시고 도와주시는 그런 겸손한 자리로 우리를 이끌어줍니다.

OPERATING WITH PRAYER

When my son needed orthopedic surgery, I was grateful for the doctor who performed the operation. The doctor, who was nearing retirement, assured us he’d helped thousands of people with the same problem. Even so, before the procedure, he prayed and asked God to provide a good outcome. And I’m so grateful He did.

Jehoshaphat, an experienced national leader, prayed too during a crisis. Three nations had united against him, and they were coming to attack his people. Although he had more than two decades
of experience, he decided to ask God what to do. He prayed, “[We] will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us” (2 CHRONICLES 20:9). He also asked for guidance, saying, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (V. 12).

Jehoshaphat’s humble approach to the challenge opened his heart to God’s involvement, which came in the form of encouragement and divine intervention (VV. 15–17, 22). No matter how much experience we have in certain areas, praying for help develops a holy reliance on God. It reminds us that He knows more than we do, and He’s ultimately in control. It puts us in a humble place—a
place where He’s pleased to respond and support us, no matter what the outcome may be.

낡은 천막

“천막이 지쳤어!” 케냐 나이로비에서 목회하는 내 친구 폴이 알려온 소식입니다. 2015년부터 그 교회는 천막 같은 곳에 모여 예배를 드렸는데, 이제 “텐트가 낡아서 비가 오면 물이 샌다”는 것입니다.

친구의 글을 통해 그들의 천막이 구조적으로 약해진 이야기를 들으니 바울 사도가 우리 인간의 연약함에 대해 한 말이 떠오릅니다. “우리의 겉 사람은 낡아가나... 우리는 이 장막에서 살면서, 무거운 짐에 눌려서 탄식하고 있습니다”(고린도후서 4:16; 5:4, 새번역).

우리는 살면서 인간의 연약함을 비교적 일찍 알게 되지만 나이 들어가며 더 깊이 깨닫게 됩니다. 정말 세월 앞에 장사 없다는 말처럼 젊음의 활력은 늙어감의 현실에 어쩔 수 없이 굴복하고 맙니다(전도서 12:1-7 참조). 우리의 천막인 육체는 낡아져 갑니다.

하지만 천막, 곧 우리의 육체가 낡았다고 해서 우리의 믿음도 낡아지는 것은 아닙니다. 우리가 나이 들어도 소망과 열정은 사라지지 않습니다. 바울 사도는 “그러므로 우리가 낙심하지 아니 하노니”(고린도후서 4:16)라고 말합니다. 우리 몸을 만드신 그분은 성령을 통하여 우리 몸에 직접 거하십니다. 그리고 이 육신이 더 이상 감당하지 못하게 될 때, 우리는 무너지지 않고 아픔이 없는 집, 곧 “하나님께서 지으신 집 곧 하늘에 있는 영원한 집”(5:1) 에 머무르게 될 것입니다.

TIRED TENTS

“The tent is tired!” Those were the words of my friend Paul, who pastors a church in Nairobi, Kenya. Since 2015, the congregation has worshiped in a tentlike structure. Now, Paul writes, “Our tent is worn out and it is leaking when it rains.”

My friend’s words about their tent’s structural weaknesses remind us of the apostle Paul’s words regarding the frailty of our human existence. “Outwardly we are wasting away . . . . While we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:16; 5:4).

Though the awareness of our fragile human existence happens relatively early in life, we become more conscious of it as we age. Indeed, time picks our pockets. The vitality of youth surrenders reluctantly to the reality of aging (SEE ECCLESIASTES 12:1–7). Our bodies— our tents—get tired.

But tired tents need not equate to tired trust. Hope and heart needn’t fade as we age. “Therefore we do not lose heart,” the apostle says (2 CORINTHIANS 4:16). The One who has made our bodies has made Himself at home there through His Spirit. And when this body can no longer serve us, we’ll have a dwelling not subject to breaks and aches—we’ll “have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven” (5:1).

영원한 생명

“위니, 죽는 것을 두려워하지 말고 살아내지 못한 삶을 두려워해야 해.” 앵거스 터크의 이 말은 동화를 원작으로 제작된 영화 ‘터크 에버래스팅’에 나오는 것으로, 흥미롭게도 죽을 수 없는 등장인물이 한 말입니다. 이 이야기에서 터크 가족은 영생을 얻은 사람들입니다. 위니를 사랑하게 된 젊은 제임스 터크는 위니와 영원히 함께 살기를 바라는 마음에 그녀에게 영생하는 방법을 찾아보라고 간청합니다. 하지만 지혜로운 가장 앵거스는 그저 영원히 살아 있다는 것이 삶을 충족시켜 주는 것은 아니라는 사실을 깨닫고 있었습니다.

LIFE EVERLASTING

“Don’t be afraid of death, Winnie,” said Angus Tuck, “be afraid of the unlived life.” That quote from the bookturned- film Tuck Everlasting is made more interesting by the fact that it comes from a character who can’t die. In the story, the Tuck family has become immortal. Young Jesse Tuck, who falls in love with Winnie, begs her to seek immortality too so they can be together forever. But wise Angus understands that simply enduring forever doesn’t bring fulfillment.

Our culture tells us that if we could be healthy, young, and energetic forever, we would be truly happy. But that’s not where our fulfillment is found. Before He went to the cross, Jesus prayed for His disciples and for future believers. He said, “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (JOHN 17:3). Our fulfillment in life comes from a relationship with God through faith in Jesus. He’s our hope for the future and joy for this present day.

Jesus prayed that His disciples would take on the patterns of new life: that they would obey God (V. 6), believe that Jesus was sent by God the Father (V. 8), and be united as one (V. 11). As believers
in Christ, we look forward to a future eternal life with Him. But during these days we live on earth, we can live the “rich and satisfying life” (10:10 NLT) that He promised—right here, right now.

믿음의 씨

지난 봄, 잔디밭에 통기 작업을 하기 전날 밤, 거센 바람이 불어 단풍나무 씨들이 한꺼번에 떨어졌습니다. 잔디 공기주입기로 땅에 작은 “구멍” 을 내어 굳은 흙을 잘게 부수고 나니 잔디밭에 단풍나무 씨 몇 백 개가 자연히 심겨져, 불과 2주만에 우리 잔디밭에 어린 단풍나무들이 우거지기 시작했습니다.

착잡한 마음으로 흩어진 나뭇잎을 살피다가, 나는 나무 한 그루가 낳은 새 생명의 왕성한 번식력에 놀라움을 금치 못했습니다. 새로 자라는 각각의 어린 나무들은 나 한 사람이 다른 사람들과 나눌 수 있는 그리스도 안의 새 생명의 모습을 보여주었습니다. 우리는 각자의 인생 여정에서 “[우리] 속에 있는 소망에 관한 이유를 대답할”(베드로전서 3:15) 기회를 수없이 가지게 될 것입니다.

우리가 예수님의 소망 안에서 “의를 위하여 고난을 받으면”(14절), 우리 주위 사람들이 그것을 볼 것이며 아직 하나님을 인격적으로 알지 못하는 사람들은 궁금해할 것입니다. 그들이 궁금하여 물어볼 때 우리가 준비되어 있다면 하나님이 새 생명으로 태어나게 하실 씨를 그들에게 심을 수 있을 것입니다. 영적 폭풍이 몰아치듯 한 번에 모든 사람과 나눌 필요는 없습니다. 받을 준비가 되어 있는 마음에 부드럽고 공손하게 믿음의 씨를 뿌리면 됩니다.

SEEDS OF FAITH

Last spring, the night before our lawn was to be aerated, a violent windstorm blew the seeds off our maple tree in one fell swoop. So when the aerating machine broke up the compacted soil by pulling small “cores” out of the ground, it planted hundreds of maple seeds in my yard. Just two short weeks later, I had the beginnings of a maple forest growing up through my lawn!

As I (frustratedly) surveyed the misplaced foliage, I was struck by the prolific abundance of new life a single tree had spawned. Each of the miniature trees became a picture for me of the new life in Christ that I—as merely one person—can share with others. We each will have countless opportunities to “give the reason for the hope that [we] have” (1 PETER 3:15) in the course of our lives.

When we “suffer for what is right” with the hope of Jesus (V. 14), it’s visible to those around us and might just become a point of curiosity to those who don’t yet know God personally. If we’re ready when they ask, then we may share the seed through which God brings forth new life. We don’t have to share it with everyone all at once—in some kind of spiritual windstorm. Rather, we gently and respectfully drop the seed of faith into a heart ready to receive it.

펩이 주지사 아내가 기르던 고양이를 죽였다고 신문에서 보도했지만 그것은 사실이 아니었습니다. 펩이 잘못한 것이라고는 주지사의 관저에 있는 소파를 입으로 씹었던 것뿐이었습니다.

펩은 1920년대에 펜실베이니아 주지사 기포드 핀초가 기르던 활기 넘치는 어린 래브라도 리트리버였습니다. 그 개는 실제로 이스턴 스테이트 교도소로 보내져 거기서 범죄자 식별 번호와 함께 범인 식별용 사진을 찍었습니다. 한

WAGGING TAILS AND TONGUES

The newspaper declared that Pep had taken the life of the cat belonging to the governor’s wife—but he didn’t do it. The only thing he may have been guilty of was chewing the sofa at the governor’s mansion.

Pep was a rambunctious young Labrador retriever owned by Pennsylvania’s governor Gifford Pinchot in the 1920s. The dog actually was sent to Eastern State Penitentiary, where his mug shot was taken with a prisoner identification number. When a newspaper reporter heard about it, he made up the cat story. Because his report appeared in the newspaper, many believed Pep really was a cat-killer.

Israel’s King Solomon knew well the power of misinformation. He wrote, “The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts” (PROVERBS 18:8). Sometimes our fallen
human nature causes us to want to believe things about others that aren’t true.

Yet even when others believe untruths about us, God can still use us for good. In reality, the governor sent Pep to prison so he could be a friend to the inmates there—and he served for many years as a pioneer therapy dog.

God’s purposes for our lives still stand, regardless of what others say or think. When others gossip about us, remember that His opinion—and His love for us—is what matters most.
