고카트 수리하기

어린 시절 우리집 차고에 관한 많은 추억이 있습니다. 토요일 아침이면 아버지는 집 진입로로 차를 빼서 우리가 작업할 공간을 마련해 주었습니다. 내가 가장 좋아하는 작업은 우리가 발견한 고장 난 고카트(어린이가 타고 노는 소형자동차)를 고치는 것이었습니다. 그 차고 바닥에서 우리는 고카트에 바퀴를 갈아 끼고 플라스틱으로 된 멋진 앞창을 달기도 했습니다. 아버지가 지나가는 차들이 있나 살펴보는 동안 나는 차고 앞 진입로를 신나게 달리곤 했습니다! 돌이켜보면 그 차고에서는 단순히 고카트를 고치는 것 말고 더 중요한 일이 벌어지고 있었던 것을 알게 됩니다. 거기서 한 소년이 아버지의 영향을 받으며 자라고 있었고 그 과정에서 하나님을 어렴풋이 알아가고 있었던 것입니다.

사람은 하나님의 형상을 따라 창조되었습니다(창세기 1:27-28). 사람이 아이를 양육하는 일 역시 하나님으로부터 비롯되었습니다. 하나님은 “하늘과 땅에 있는 각 족속에게 이름을 주신 아버지”(에베소서 3:14-15)이시기 때문입니다. 부모가 아이를 낳는 것이 생명을 주시는 하나님의 능력을 닮은 것처럼, 아이들을 양육하고 보호하는 것도 부모 자신이 아닌 하나님 아버지로부터 비롯된 품성입니다. 하나님은 모든 양육의 기반이 되는 모델입니다.

나의 아버지는 완벽하지 않았습니다. 모든 아버지와 어머니들처럼 그의 양육 방법도 때로는 하늘 나라의 방법과 다를 때가 있었습니다. 그러나 아버지가 하나님 방식으로 나를 키우셨던 많은 순간들은 나에게 하나님의 양육과 보호하심을 맛보아 알게 해주었습니다. 그것이 바로 차고 바닥에서 아버지와 고카트를 수리하던 그 시간에 있었던 일입니다.

FIXING GO-KARTS

The garage of my childhood home holds many memories. On Saturday mornings, my dad would roll our car down the driveway so we had room to work—with my favorite project being a broken go-kart we’d found. On that garage floor, we gave it new wheels, attached a sporty, plastic windshield, and—with Dad on the street looking out for traffic—I would race down the driveway with such excitement! Looking back, I see more was going on in that garage than simply fixing go-karts. Instead, a young boy was being shaped by his dad—and getting a glimpse of God in the process.

Human beings have been patterned on God’s own nature (GENESIS 1:27–28). Human parenting has its origin in Him too, for He’s “the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name” (EPHESIANS 3:14–15). Just as parents imitate God’s life-giving abilities by bringing children into the world, when they nurture and protect their kids, they express qualities not sourced in themselves but in Father God. He’s the model all parenting is based on.

My father wasn’t perfect. Like every father and mother, his parenting sometimes failed to imitate heaven’s. But when it so often did imitate God, it gave me a glimpse of His own nurture and protection—right there, as we fixed go-karts on the garage floor. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

목소리의 힘

역사상 가장 힘있는 연설가들은 대부분 긍정적인 변화를 이끌어내기 위해 자기 목소리를 냈던 지도자들이었습니다. 노예 폐지와 자유에 관한 연설로 미국의 노예제도 폐지 운동의 시발점이 되었던 프레드릭 더글라스를 생각해 보십시오. 그가 만약 침묵을 지켰다면 어떻게 되었을까요? 우리는 누구나 목소리를 내어 다른 사람들에게 영감과 도움을 줄 수 있으면서도 목소리 높이는 것이 두려워 꼼짝 못하게 될 수 있습니다. 이렇게 두려움이 우리를 억누를 때에는 우리에게 신령한 지혜와 용기를 주시는 하나님께 의지할 수 있습니다.

하나님께서 우리를 어떻게 쓰실 지 보여 달라고 간구할 때 하나님은 우리의 목적을 완수하도록 우리를 준비시켜 주실 것입니다. 하나님의 도움으로 우리는 담대하게 우리의 목소리를 사용하여 주변 사람들에게 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다.

THE POWER OF VOICE

The most powerful orators in history are often those leaders who’ve used their voices to bring about positive change. Consider Frederick Douglass, whose speeches on abolition and liberty spurred a movement that helped lead to the end of slavery in the United States. What if he’d chosen to be silent? We all possess the capacity to use our voice to inspire and help others, but the fear of speaking out can be paralyzing. In the moments when we feel overwhelmed by this fear, we can look to God, our source of divine wisdom and encouragement.

When God called Jeremiah to be a prophet to the nations, he immediately began to doubt his own abilities. He cried out, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young” (JEREMIAH 1:6). But God wouldn’t allow Jeremiah’s fear to get in the way of his divine calling to inspire a generation through his voice. Instead, He instructed the prophet to simply trust God by saying and doing whatever He commanded (V. 7). In addition to affirming Jeremiah, He also equipped him. “I have put my words in your mouth” (V. 9), He assured him.

When we ask God to show us how He wants to use us, He’ll equip us to carry out our purpose. With His help, we can boldly use our voice to make a positive impact on those around us. - KIMYA LODER

틀림없는 하나님의 기억력

4억 달러가 넘는 비트 코인을 보유한 한 남자가 그 돈을 한 푼도 쓸 수가 없었습니다. 그 자금이 저장된 기기의 비밀번호를 잊어버렸고, 잘못된 비밀번호를 열 번 입력하면 기기가 스스로 파손되기 때문에 낭패를 당하게 된 것입니다. 재산을 완전히 잃어버리는 것이지요. 10년 동안 그는 자기 인생이 걸린 투자의 비밀번호를 기억해내려고 온갖 애를 쓰며 괴로워했습니다. 비밀번호를 여덟 번 시도해 보았지만 모두 실패했습니다. 2021년에 그는 단 두 번 남은 기회마저 실패하면 모든 것이 연기처럼 사라진다고 한탄했습니다.

사람들은 잘 잊어버립니다. 열쇠를 어디다 두었는지 하는 사소한 것들부터 때로는 수백만 달러를 찾는 비밀번호 같은 엄청난 것을 잊어버리기도 합니다. 그러나 감사하게도 하나님은 우리와 다르십니다. 하나님은 그분에게 소중한 것들이나 사람들을 결코 잊지 않으십니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 고난의 시기에 하나님께서 그들을 잊으셨다고 두려워하여 “여호와께서 나를 버리시며 주께서 나를 잊으셨다”(이사야 49:14)고 했습니다. 그러나 이사야는 하나님께서 ‘항상’ 기억하신다고 그들에게 확신시켜 주었습니다. 선지자는 “여인이 어찌 그 젖 먹는 자식을 잊겠느냐”고 묻습니다. 당연히 어머니는 젖먹이 아기를 잊지 않습니다. 그러나 설령 젖먹이 아기를 잊는 어이없는 어머니가 있다 하더라도 하나님은 결코 우리를 잊지 않으신다는 것을 우리는 압니다(15절).

하나님은 “내가 너를 내 손바닥에 새겼다”(16절)고 말씀하십니다. 하나님은 우리의 이름을 자신 안에 새겨 놓으셨습니다. 하나님은 우리를 사랑하시기에 잊지 못하신다는 사실을 기억하십시오.

GOD’S UNFAILING MEMORY

A man owned more than $400 million in bitcoin, but he couldn’t access a cent of it. He lost the password for the device storing his funds, and disaster loomed: after ten password attempts, the device would self-destruct. A fortune lost forever. For a decade, the man had agonized, desperately trying to recall the password to his life-altering investment. He tried eight passwords and failed eight times. In 2021, he lamented that he had just two more chances before it all went up in smoke.

We’re a forgetful people. Sometimes we forget small things (where we placed our keys), and sometimes we forget massive things (a password that unlocks millions). Thankfully, God isn’t like us. He never forgets the things or people that are dear to Him. In times of distress, Israel feared that God had forgotten them. “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me” (ISAIAH 49:14). Isaiah assured them, however, that their God always remembers. “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast?” the prophet asks. Of course, a mother will not forget her suckling child. Still, even if a mother were to commit such an absurdity, we know God will never forget us (V. 15).

“See,”God says, “I have engraved you on the palms of my hands” (V. 16). God has etched our names into His own being. Let’s remember that He can’t forget us—the ones He loves. - WINN COLLIER

조각들을 하나로 맞춤

세계적인 팬데믹 때문에 격리 생활을 하는 동안 우리 가족은 무려 만 팔천 개의 조각으로 된 퍼즐을 맞추는 야심 찬 과제를 시작했습니다! 우리는 거의 매일 퍼즐을 맞추는 일을 했지만 별로 진전이 없는 것처럼 느껴질 때가 많았습니다. 시작한 지 다섯 달이 지나서야 우리는 마침내 식당 바닥을 덮고 있던 가로 9 피트, 세로 6 피트의 퍼즐에 마지막 조각 하나를 끼워 맞출 수 있었습니다.

때로는 내 인생이 거대한 퍼즐처럼 느껴지기도 합니다. 조각들을 많이 맞추어 놓았지만 아직 훨씬 더 많은 것들이 바닥에 널려 있습니다. 하나님께서 나를 예수님과 점점 더 닮아가도록 변화시키고 계신다는 것을 알지만 때로는 별로 진전이 없어 보이기도 합니다.

나는 바울이 빌립보 교인들에게 보낸 편지에서 그들의 선한 일을 보고 기쁨으로 그들을 위해 기도했다고 말한 것에 큰 위안을 얻습니다(1:3-4). 그러나 그의 확신은 교인들의 능력이 아니라 하나님, 곧 “착한 일을 시작하신 이가...이루실 줄을”(6절) 믿는 믿음에서 나온 것이었습니다.

PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER

While our family quarantined due to the global pandemic, we took on an ambitious project—an eighteen-thousand-piece puzzle! Even though we worked on it almost daily, often we felt like we weren’t making much progress. Five months after we began, we finally celebrated adding the final piece to the nine-by-six-foot puzzle that covered our dining room floor.

Sometimes my life feels a bit like a giant puzzle—many pieces in place, but a whole lot more still lying in a jumble on the floor. While I know that God is at work transforming me to be more and more like Jesus, sometimes it can be hard to see much progress.

I take great comfort in Paul’s encouragement in his letter to the Philippians when he said he prayed for them with joy because of the good work they were doing (1:3–4). But his confidence came not in their abilities but in God, believing that “he who began a good work . . . [would] carry it on to completion” (V. 6).

God has promised to finish His work in us. Like a puzzle, there may be sections that still need our attention, and there are times when we don’t seem to make much progress. But we can have confidence that our faithful God is still putting the pieces together. - LISA M. SAMRA

지미는 부부 사역자들을 돕기 위해 사회적 불안과 위험, 불편이 존재하는, 세계에서 가장 가난한 나라 중 한 곳으로 여행하는 것을 마다하지 않았습니다. 본부 팀에게 지속적으로 보내온 문자 메시지 속에는 그가 직면한 어려움들이 담겨있었습니다. “여러분, 중보기도를 부탁합니다. 우리는 지난 두 시간 동안 겨우 10마일(약 16킬로미터)을 갔습니다... 가면서 자동차가 열 번도 넘게 과열되었습니다.” 차량 문제로 그는 자정 직전에 겨우 도착하여 다섯 시간을 기다린 사람들에게 설교했습니다. 나중에 우리는 사뭇 다른 어조의 문자를 받았습니다. “우리는 놀랍고 아름다운 친교의 시간을 가졌습니다... 십여 명의 사람들이 기도 받기 위해 앞으로 나왔습니다. 정말 권능이 임한 밤이었습니다!”

하나님을 신실하게 섬기는 것은 어려울 수 있습니다. 히브리서 11장에 등장하는 믿음의 본이 되는 사람들도 이에 동의할 것입니다. 하나님을 믿는다는 것 때문에 평범한 사람들이 힘들고 이해할 수 없는 상황에 처해졌습니다. “어떤 사람들은 조롱을 받고 채찍으로 맞았으며 사슬에 묶여 갇히기도 했습니다”(36 절, 현대인의 성경). 그들은 믿음 때문에 당하는 위험을 감수하며 그 결과를 하나님께 맡겨야만 했습니다. 우리도 마찬가지입니다. 믿음으로 산다는 것은 멀리 위험한 지역에 가는 것이 아닐 수도 있지만, 길 건너편으로, 캠퍼스 저쪽으로, 식당이나 회의실의 빈 자리로 우리를 이끄는 것일 수도 있습니다. 이것도 위험하다고 생각하십니까? 아마 그럴 수 있습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 우리를 도우시기에 지금이나 나중에 받게 될 상급은 충분히 위험을 무릅쓸 가치가 있습니다.

TEXTS, TROUBLES, AND TRIUMPHS

Jimmy hadn’t allowed the reality of social unrest, danger, and discomfort to keep him from traveling to one of the poorest countries in the world to encourage ministry couples. The
steady stream of text messages to our team back home revealed the challenges he encountered. “Okay, boys, activate the prayer line. We’ve gone ten miles in the last two hours. . . . Car has overheated a dozen times.” Transportation setbacks meant that he arrived just before midnight to preach to those who’d waited for five hours. Later we received a text with a different tone. “Amazing, sweet time of fellowship. . . . About a dozen people came forward for prayer. It was a powerful night!”

Faithfully serving God can be challenging. The exemplars of faith listed in Hebrews 11 would agree. Compelled by their faith in God, ordinary men and women faced uncomfortable and unfathomable circumstances. ”Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment” (V. 36). Their faith compelled them to take risks and rely on God for the outcome. The same is true for us. Living out our faith may not take us to risky places far away, but it may well take us across the street or across the campus or to an empty seat in a lunchroom or boardroom. Risky? Perhaps. But the rewards, now or later, will be well worth the risks as God helps us. - ARTHUR JACKSON

이제 텅 비었구나

형들과 우리 가족은 어린 시절 살던 집에서 부모님의 물건들을 옮기며 하루를 보냈습니다. 오후 늦게 마지막 물건을 가지러 다시 갔을 때 이것이 우리 가족의 집에서 보내는 마지막 시간이라는 것을 깨닫고 뒷마당에서 사진을 찍기 위해 포즈를 취했습니다. 나는 울지 않으려 애를 쓰다가 어머니가 나를 돌아보시며 “이제 완전히 텅 비었구나” 하시는 말씀에 참았던 눈물을 터뜨리고 말았습니다. 54년의 추억을 간직한 집은 이제 비어 있습니다. 나는 그것에 대해 생각하지 않으려고 애쓰고 있습니다.

내 마음의 고통은 예레미야애가의 첫 구절과 흡사합니다. “슬프다 이 성이여 전에는 사람들이 많더니 이제는 어찌 그리 적막하게 앉았는고”(1:1). 중요한 차이점은 예루살렘은 “그의 죄가 많으므로”(5절) 비어 있었다는 것입니다. 하나님은 자신에게 반역하고 회개하기를 거부한 그의 백성들을 바벨론에 사로잡혀 가게 하셨습니다(18절). 내 부모님은 적어도 직접적인 죄 때문에 이사하지는 않았습니다. 그러나 아담이 에덴동산에서 범죄한 이후 각 사람의 건강은 살아있는 동안 점점 나빠지게 되었습니다. 나이가 들면서 관리하기가 더 쉬운 작은 집으로 이사하는 것은 보통 있는 일입니다.

IT’S EMPTY NOW

My brothers and our families spent the day moving our parents’ belongings from our childhood home. Late in the afternoon, we went back for one last pickup and, knowing this would be our final time in our family home, posed for a picture on the back porch. I was fighting tears when my mom turned to me and said, “It’s all empty now.” That pushed me over the edge. The house that holds fifty-four years of memories is empty now. I try not to think of it.

The ache in my heart resonates with Jeremiah’s first words of Lamentations: “How deserted lies the city, once so full of people!” (1:1). An important difference is that Jerusalem was empty “because of her many sins” (V. 5). God exiled His people to Babylon because they rebelled against Him and refused to repent (V. 18). My parents weren’t moving because of sin, at least not directly. But ever since Adam’s sin in the garden of Eden, each person’s health has declined over their lifetime. As we age, it’s not unusual for us to downsize into homes that are easier to maintain.

I’m thankful for the memories that made our modest home special. Pain is the price of love. I know the next goodbye won’t be to my parents’ home but to my parents themselves. And I cry. I cry out to Jesus to come, put an end to goodbyes, and restore all things. My hope is in Him. - MIKE WITTMER

자유하게 하는 순종

어린 십대 소녀의 표정에 불안과 수치심이 보였습니다. 2022년 동계 올림픽을 앞두고 피겨 스케이팅 선수로서 그녀의 성공은 의심의 여지가 없었습니다. 여러 대회에서 연달아 우승했고 이번에도 금메달을 딸 것이 확실했습니다. 그러나 테스트 결과 그녀의 몸에서 금지 약물이 발견됐습니다. 엄청난 기대와 비난의 무게에 짓눌린 그녀는 프리스케이팅 프로그램에서 여러 번 넘어지며 시상대에 서지 못했습니다. 메달을 못 받은 것이지요. 이 사건 이전에는 얼음 위에서 예술적 자유와 창의성을 보여주었던 그녀가 지금은 규칙을 어겼다는 비난으로 좌절된 꿈에서 헤어나지 못하고 있습니다.

하나님은 인류의 시초부터 우리가 자유의지를 행할 때 순종의 중요성을 보여주셨습니다. 죄가 이 세상에 상처와 죽음을 가져왔듯이 불순종은 아담과 하와, 그리고 우리 모두에게 참담한 결과를 가져왔습니다(창세기 3:6-19). 그렇게 되지 않아도 될 일이었습니다. 하나님은 아담에게 “각종 나무의 열매를 임의로 먹되” 한 가지는 먹지 말라고 말씀하셨습니다(2:16-17). 그러나 그들은 그들의 “눈이 밝아져 하나님과 같이” 될 것이라고 생각하여 하나님께서 금하신 “선악을 알게 하는 나무의 열매”를 먹었습니다(3:5; 2:17). 그리고 죄와 수치와 죽음이 뒤따라왔습니다.

하나님은 우리가 누릴 수 있는 자유와 많은 좋은 것을 은혜로 주십니다 (요한복음 10:10). 또한 하나님은 사랑으로 우리의 유익을 위해 그분께 순종하라고 요구하십니다. 우리가 순종을 선택하며, 기쁨으로 충만하고 부끄러움이 없는 삶을 얻을 수 있도록 하나님께서 도와주시기를 간구합니다.

FREEING OBEDIENCE

The look on the young teen’s face reflected angst and shame. Heading into the 2022 Winter Olympics, her success as a figure skater was unparalleled—a string of championships had made her a lock to win a gold medal. But then a test result revealed a banned substance in her system. With the immense weight of expectations and condemnation pressing down on her, she fell multiple times during her free-skate program and didn’t stand on the victors’ platform—no medal. She’d displayed artistic freedom and creativity on the ice prior to the scandal, but now an accusation of a broken rule bound her to crushed dreams.

From the early days of humanity, God has revealed the impor- tance of obedience as we exercise our free will. Disobedience led to devasting effects for Adam, Eve, and all of us as sin brought brokenness and death to our world (GENESIS 3:6–19). It didn’t have to be that way. God had told Adam, “You are free to eat from any tree” but one (2:16–17). Thinking their “eyes [would] be opened, and [they would] be like God,” they ate of the banned “tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (3:5; 2:17). Sin, shame, and death followed.

God graciously provides freedom and so many good things for us to enjoy (JOHN 10:10). In love, He also calls us to obey Him for our good. May He help us choose obedience and find life full of joy and free of shame. - TOM FELTEN

하나님의 정원

우리집 문 앞에는 삶의 아름다움과 덧없음을 일깨워주는 식물이 자라고 있습니다. 지난 봄에 아내는 밤나팔꽃 덩굴을 심었습니다. 보름달을 닮은 크고 둥근 흰색 꽃을 피우기 때문에 붙여진 이름입니다. 이 꽃은 송이마다 밤에 피었다가 다음날 아침 밝은 햇빛을 보면 시들어 다시는 피어나지 않습니다. 그러나 많은 꽃을 피우는 이 식물은 매일 저녁 새로운 꽃의 향연을 벌입니다. 우리는 매일 오가며 감상을 하는데 나갔다 돌아오면 또 어떤 새로운 아름다움이 우리를 맞이할지 기대가 됩니다.

이 연약한 꽃들은 성경의 중요한 진리를 생각나게 합니다. 베드로 사도는 이사야 선지자의 말을 묵상하며 이렇게 썼습니다. “너희가 거듭난 것은 썩어질 씨로 된 것이 아니요 썩지 아니할 씨로 된 것이니 살아 있고 항상 있는 하나님의 말씀으로 되었느니라 그러므로 모든 육체는 풀과 같고 그 모든 영광은 풀의 꽃과 같으니 풀은 마르고 꽃은 떨어지되”(베드로전서 1:23-24). 그러나 베드로는
하나님은 그분의 약속을 영원히 지키신다는 것을 우리에게 확실히 말합니다!(25절).

정원의 꽃들처럼 이 땅에서의 우리 삶은 영원에 비하면 짧습니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리의 짧은 인생 속에 아름다움을 말씀으로 넣어 주셨습니다. 예수님의 복음을 통해 우리는 하나님과 함께 새롭게 시작하며 그분이 사랑으로 함께 하시는 영생의 약속을 믿습니다. 지구의 해와 달이 한낱 기억으로만 남게 될 그때에도 우리는 여전히 주님을 찬양할 것입니다.

GOD’S GARDEN

A reminder of the beauty and brevity of life grows outside my front door. Last spring, my wife planted moonflower vines, so named because of their large and round white blooms
that resemble a full moon. Each flower opens for one night and then withers in the bright sun the following morning, never to bloom again. But the plant is prolific, and every evening presents a fresh parade of flowers. We love watching it as we come and go each day, wondering what new beauty will greet us when we return.

These fragile flowers call to mind a vital truth from Scripture. The apostle Peter, recalling the words of the prophet Isaiah, wrote, “You have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, ‘All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall’ ” (1 PETER 1:23–24). But he assures us that God keeps His promises forever! (V. 25).

Like flowers in a garden, our lives on earth are short when compared with eternity. But God has spoken beauty into our brevity. Through the good news of Jesus, we make a fresh begin- ning with God and trust His promise of unlimited life in His loving presence. When Earth’s sun and moon are but a memory, we will praise Him still. - JAMES BANKS

믿음의 도약

카리브해의 세인트루시아 섬 열대우림의 가장 높은 곳에서 집라인(역주: 와이어를 타고 높은 곳에서 빠르게 하강하는 실외 스포츠)을 타려고 할 때 내 속에 두려움이 솟구쳐 올라왔습니다. 플랫폼에서 뛰어내리기 몇 초를 앞두고 잘못될 수 있는 온갖 경우들이 생각났습니다. 그러나 나는 있는 용기를 다 내어 (그리고 되돌아갈 방법도 거의 없어서) 출발했습니다. 숲의 제일 높은 곳에서 내려오면서 무성한 푸른 나무들을 휙휙 지나고 머리를 가르는 바람을 맞으면서 나의 걱정은 천천히 사라져 갔습니다. 중력의 힘으로 공기를 가르며 내려가다 보니 다음 플랫폼이 선명히 보였습니다. 이윽고 천천히 멈추며 무사히 도착했습니다.

집라인을 타면서 하나님께서 우리로 새롭고 도전이 되는 일을 하게 하시는 시간들이 그림처럼 떠올랐습니다. 성경은 의심이 들고 불확실해 보일 때 하나님을 신뢰하고 “[우리의] 명철을 의지하지 말라”(잠언 3:5)고 가르칩니다. 마음에 두려움과 의심이 가득하면 앞에 놓인 길이 불확실하고 굽어 보일 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리의 길을 하나님께 맡기고 믿음으로 걸음을 내디디면 “주님께서 [우리가] 가는 길을 곧게 하실 것입니다”(6절, 새번역). 우리는 기도와 말씀을 통해 하나님이 어떤 분인지 알게 됨으로 믿음의 도약을 하는데 더욱 확신을 갖게 됩니다.

하나님을 붙잡고 삶의 변화들 가운데서 우리를 인도해 달라고 맡겨드리면 삶이 아무리 힘들어도 우리는 자유와 평안을 얻을 수 있습니다.

LEAP OF FAITH

As I prepared to ride a zip line from the highest point of a rain forest on the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia, fear welled up inside me. Seconds before I jumped from the platform,
thoughts of everything that could go wrong filled my mind. But with all the courage I could muster (and few options for turning back), I released. Dropping from the pinnacle of the forest, I whizzed through the lush green trees, wind flowing through my hair and my worries slowly fading. As I moved through the air allowing gravity to carry me, my view of the next platform became clearer and, with a gentle stop, I knew I’d arrived safely.

My time on the zip line pictured for me the times God has us undertake new, challenging endeavors. Scripture teaches us to put our trust in God and “lean not on [our] own understanding” (PROVERBS 3:5) when we feel doubt and uncertainty. When our minds are filled with fear and doubt, our paths can be unclear and distorted. But once we’ve made the decision to step out in faith by submitting our way to God, “he will make [our] paths straight” (V. 6). We become more confident taking leaps of faith by learning who God is through spending time in prayer and the Scriptures.

We can find freedom and tranquility even in life’s challenges as we hang on to God and allow Him to guide us through the changes in our lives. - KIMYA LODER

안전한 곳

은퇴한 데비 스티븐스 브라우더 선생님은 가능한 많은 사람들이 나무심기에 나서도록 활동하고 있습니다. 그 이유는 더위 때문입니다. 미국에서 폭염은 날씨와 관련된 가장 주된 사망 원인입니다. 그래서 그녀는 “저는 나무부터 시작하겠습니다.”라고 말합니다. 나무는 열을 차단하는 보호막 역할을 하기 때문에 우리가 사는 곳을 보호하는 중요한 방법 중의 하나입니다. “이것은 사느냐 죽느냐의 문제입니다. 단순히 지역사회를 아름답게 꾸미는 것이 아닙니다.”

그늘은 시원하게 해줄 뿐만 아니라 사람의 생명을 살릴 수 있다는 사실을 시편 121편을 쓴 기자는 잘 알고 있었던 것 같습니다. 중동지방에는 일사병의 위험이 항상 존재하기 때문입니다. 이 사실은 “낮의 해가 [우리를] 상하게 하지 아니하며 밤의 달도 [우리를] 해치지 아니하게”(6절) 우리를 돌보시는 하나님이 우리의 가장 확실한 안식처라고 하는 시편의 생생한 표현을 이해하는데 도움이

OUR PLACE OF SAFETY

Retired teacher Debbie Stephens Browder is on a mission to convince as many people as possible to plant trees. The reason? Heat. Extreme heat in the United States is the number one weather-related cause of death. In response, she says, “I’m starting with trees.” The canopy of heat protection that trees provide is one significant way to protect communities. “It’s life or death. It’s not just about beautifying the community.”

The fact that shade isn’t just refreshing but potentially lifesaving would have been well known to the psalmist who wrote Psalm 121; in the Middle East, the risk of sunstroke is constant. This reality adds depth to the psalm’s vivid description of God as our surest place of safety, the One in whose care “the sun will not harm [us] by day, nor the moon by night” (V. 6).

This verse can’t mean that believers in Jesus are somehow immune to pain or loss in this life (or that heat isn’t dangerous!). After all, Christ tells us, “In this world you will have trouble” (JOHN 16:33). But this metaphor of God as our shade does vividly reassure us that, whatever comes our way, our lives are held in His watchful care (PSALM 121:7–8). There we can find rest through trusting Him, knowing that nothing can separate us from His love (JOHN 10:28; ROMANS 8:39). - MONICA LA ROSE
