당신이 외로울 때

저녁 7시에 후이 리앙은 부엌에서 밥과 먹다 남은 어묵을 먹고 있었습니다. 아파트 옆 집에 사는 추아의 가족도 저녁을 먹고 있었는데 그들의 웃음소리와 대화가 조용한 후이 리앙 집까지 들려왔습니다. 후이 리앙은 아내가 죽은 후 그곳에 혼자 살고 있었습니다. 외로움과 더불어 사는 법을 터득해가며 몇 해를 살다 보니 찌르던 아픔도 점점 무디어져 갔습니다. 그러나 그날 밤 식탁에 놓인 밥그릇 하나와 젓가락 한 짝을 바라보던 그에게 깊은 슬픔이 몰려왔습니다.

그날 밤 잠자리에 들기 전 후이 리앙은 가장 좋아하는 말씀인 시편 23 편을 읽었습니다. 그의 마음에 가장 와 닿는 말씀은 오직 네 마디, “주께서 나와 함께 하심이라”(4절)였습니다. 후이 리앙에게 평안을 준 것은 목자가 양을 돌보는 실제 행위보다도, 항상 함께 있으면서 양의 삶의 크고 작은 모든 것을 바라보는 목자의 사랑의 눈길이었습니다(2-5절).

누군가가 거기 있다는 것, 나와 함께 한다는 것을 아는 것은 그런 외로운 순간들에 큰 위로가 됩니다. 하나님은 그의 자녀들에게 그의 사랑이 언제나 우리와 함께 하며(시편 103:17), 하나님이 우리를 결코 떠나지 않으신다고 (히브리서 13:5) 약속하십니다. 우리가 외롭고 아무도 바라봐 주지 않는다고 느낄 때에도, 그것이 조용한 부엌이든, 퇴근길 버스 안이든, 복잡한 슈퍼마켓이든, 우리는 언제나 목자이신 주님이 우리를 바라보고 계신다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 우리는 “주께서 나와 함께 하신다”고 말할 수 있습니다.

WHEN YOU’RE LONELY

At 7 p.m., Hui-Liang was in his kitchen, eating rice and leftover fish balls. The Chua family in the apartment next door was having dinner too, and their laughter and conversation cut through the silence of Hui-Liang’s unit, where he had lived alone since his wife died. He’d learned to live with loneliness; over the years, its stabbing pain had become a dull ache. But tonight, the sight of the one bowl and pair of chopsticks on his table pierced him deeply.

Before he went to bed that night, Hui-Liang read Psalm 23, his favorite psalm. The words that mattered most to him are only four syllables: “You are with me” (V. 4). More than the shepherd’s practical acts of care toward the sheep, it was his steadfast presence and loving gaze over every detail of the life of the sheep (VV. 2−5) that gave Hui-Liang peace.

Just knowing that someone is there, that someone is with us, brings great comfort in those lonely moments. God promises His children that His love will always be with us (PSALM 103:17), and that He’ll never leave us (HEBREWS 13:5). When we feel alone and unseen—whether in a quiet kitchen, on the bus going home from work, or even in a crowded supermarket—we can know that the Shepherd’s gaze is always on us. 원수의 머리 위에 숯불을 얹음

댄은 매일 같은 교도관으로부터의 구타를 견뎌야 했습니다. 예수님께서 이 사람을 사랑하라고 말씀하시는 것을 강하게 느낀 댄은 어느 날 아침 또 구타가 시작되기 바로 전에 교도관에게 말했습니다. “교도관님, 제가 살아 있는 한 우리가 매일 만나야만 된다면 우리 한번 친구가 되어 봅시다.” “천만에. 우리는 절대 친구가 될 수 없어.”라는 교도관의 대답에도 댄은 계속 같은 말을 하면서 손을 내밀었습니다.

그러자 교도관의 동작이 얼어붙듯 멈추더니 몸을 떨기 시작했습니다. 그러고는 댄의 손을 잡고 놓아주려 하지 않았습니다. 눈물이 교도관의 얼굴을 타고 흘러내렸습니다. “댄, 내 이름은 로속이야. 나도 너와 친구가 되고 싶어.” 라고 그가 말했습니다. 교도관은 그날, 그리고 그날 이후 댄을 한 번도 구타하지 않았습니다.

성경 말씀에 “네 원수가 배고파 하거든 음식을 먹이고 목말라 하거든 물을 마시게 하라 그리하는 것은 핀 숯을 그의 머리에 놓는 것과 일반이요 여호와께서 네게 갚아 주시리라”(잠언 25:21-22)고 했습니다. 여기서 “숯”은 이집트에서 치러지는 한 의식으로 죄를 지은 사람이 뜨거운 숯불 한 그릇을 머리

HEAPING COALS ON ENEMIES

Dan endured daily beatings from the same prison guard. He felt compelled by Jesus to love this man, so one morning, before the beating was about to begin, Dan said, “Sir, if I’m going to see you every day for the rest of my life, let’s become friends.” The guard said, “No sir. We can never be friends.” Dan insisted and reached out his hand.

The guard froze. He began to shake, then grabbed Dan’s hand and wouldn’t let go. Tears streamed down his face. He said, “Dan, my name is Rosoc. I would love to be your friend.” The guard didn’t beat Dan that day, or ever again.

Scripture tells us, “If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you” (PROVERBS 25:21–22). The “coals” imagery may reflect an Egyptian ritual in which a guilty person showed his repentance by carrying a bowl of hot coals on his head. Similarly, our kindness may cause our enemies to become red in the face from embarrassment, which may lead them to repentance.

Who is your enemy? Who do you dislike? Dan discovered that the kindness of Christ was strong enough to change any heart— his enemy’s and his own. We can too. - MIKE WITTMER

예수님은 세상의 보물을 좇지 말고 대신 “보물을 하늘에 쌓아 두라”고 가르치 셨습니다 (마태복음 6:20).

당신 마음의 욕심으로 이끄는 지름길들을 조심하십시오. 예수님을 따르는 것이 공허함을 진정한 어떤 것으로 채우는 방법입니다.

EASY MONEY

In the late 1700s, a young man discovered a mysterious depression on Nova Scotia’s Oak Island. Guessing that pirates—perhaps even Captain Kidd himself—had buried treasure there, he and a couple of companions started digging. They never found any treasure, but the rumor took on a life of its own. Over the centuries, others continued digging at the site—expending a great amount of time and expense. The hole is now more than one hundred feet (thirty meters) deep.

Such obsessions betray the emptiness in the human heart. A story in the Bible shows how one man’s behavior revealed just such a void in his heart. Gehazi had long been a reliable servant of the great prophet Elisha. But when Elisha declined the lavish gifts of a military commander whom God had healed of leprosy, Gehazi concocted a story to get some of the loot (2 KINGS 5:22). When Gehazi returned home, he lied to the prophet (V. 25). But Elisha knew. He asked him, “Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you?” (V. 26). In the end, Gehazi got what he wanted, but lost what was important (V. 27).

Jesus taught us not to pursue this world’s treasures and to instead “store up . . . treasures in heaven” (MATTHEW 6:20).

Beware of any shortcuts to your heart’s desires. Following Jesus is the way to fill the emptiness with something real. - TIM GUSTAFSON

희생을 기억하는 것

내가 모스크바에서 머물렀던 집 주인이 주일 아침 예배를 드린 후 점심을 함께 하기 위해 크렘린궁 밖에 있는 한 식당으로 나를 데려갔습니다. 그곳에 도착한 우리는 신혼부부들이 혼인 예복을 입은 채로 줄을 서서 크렘린궁 벽 밖에 있는 무명용사 묘지로 걸어가는 것을 보았습니다. 그들은 행복한 결혼식날 행사에 오늘을 있게 한 다른 이들의 희생을 기억하는 일을 일부러 포함시킨 것입니다. 결혼식 꽃다발을 묘석 위에 놓기 전에 묘비 옆에서 사진 찍는 부부들의 모습은 엄숙하기까지 했습니다.

우리 모두에게는 우리의 삶이 나름 부요케 되기까지 희생을 치른 여러 사람들에게 감사해야 할 이유가 있습니다. 모든 희생이 다 소중하지만, 무엇보다 더 소중한 한 가지가 있습니다. 우리는 십자가 아래에서만 예수님께서 우리를 위해 치르신 희생을 알고, 우리의 삶이 얼마나 전적으로 구주 예수님께
은혜를 입고 있는지 이해되기 시작합니다.

REMEMBERING THE SACRIFICE

Following the Sunday morning worship service, my Moscow host took me to lunch at a restaurant outside the Kremlin. Upon arrival, we noticed a line of newlywed couples in wedding garb approaching the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier outside the Kremlin wall. The happiness of their wedding day intentionally included remembering the sacrifices others had made to help make such a day possible. It was a sobering sight as the couples took pictures by the memorial before laying wedding flowers at its base.

All of us have cause to be thankful for others who’ve made sacrifices to bring a measure of fullness to our lives. None of those sacrifices are unimportant, but neither are those sacrifices the most important. It’s only at the foot of the cross where we see the sacrifice Jesus made for us and begin to understand how thoroughly our lives are indebted to the Savior.

Coming to the Lord’s Table to take Communion reminds us of Jesus’ sacrifice—pictured in the bread and cup. Paul wrote, “whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 CORINTHIANS 11:26). May our times at His Table remind us to live every day in remembrance and gratitude of all Jesus has done in us and for us. - BILL CROWDER

우리를 새롭게 하시는 하나님

여행사의 임원 숀 세이플러는 엉뚱한 질문 하나를 가지고 씨름하고 있었습니다. 호텔 방에서 남은 비누는 어떻게 되지? 그 수백만 개의 비누들을 다 쓰레기로 매립하지 말고 새롭게 이용할 방법을 찾을 수 있다고 그는 믿었습니다. 그래서 그는 ‘클린더월드(세상을 깨끗하게)’라는 재활용 벤처 회사를 만들어 8천개가 넘는 호텔과 유람선, 리조트들을 도와 수백만 파운드의 버려지는 비누를 받아 소독하여 새 비누로 만드는 일을 했습니다. 이 재활용된 비누는 백여개 나라의 도움이 필요한 사람들에게 보내져 수많은 위생 관련 질병과 사망을 막는데 큰 도움을 주고 있습니다.

세이플러는 말합니다. “우습게 들릴 수도 있겠지만, 호텔방 카운터에 있는 작은 비누 하나가 실제로 한 생명을 구할 수 있습니다.”

이미 사용되었거나 더러워진 것을 모아서 거기에 새 생명을 부여하는 일은 우리 구주 예수님의 가장 큰 사랑의 성품의 한 모습이기도 합니다. 그래서 예수님은 보리떡 다섯 덩이와 작은 물고기 두 마리로 오천 명을 먹이신 후에 제자들에게 “남은 조각을 거두고 버리는 것이 없게 하라”(요한복음 6:12)고
말씀하셨습니다.

우리가 살면서 “한물갔다”고 느껴질 때에도 하나님은 우리를 소진된 인생이 아니라 그분의 기적의 대상으로 보십니다. 우리를 다 써버린 존재로 보시지 않는 하나님 때문에 우리에게는 새로운 하나님 나라 사역에 사용될 거룩한 잠재력이 있습니다. “그런즉 누구든지 그리스도 안에 있으면 새로운
피조물이라 이전 것은 지나갔으니 보라 새것이 되었도다”(고린도후서 5:17). 무엇이 우리를 새롭게 합니까? 우리 안에 거하시는 그리스도이십니다.

HE MAKES US NEW

As a traveling executive, Shawn Seipler wrestled with an odd question. What happens to leftover soap in hotel rooms? Thrown out as trash for landfills, millions of soap bars could instead find new life, Seipler believed. So he launched Clean the World, a recycling venture that has helped more than eight thousand hotels, cruise lines, and resorts turn millions of pounds of discarded soap into sterilized, newly molded soap bars. Sent to people in need in more than one hundred countries, the recycled soap helps prevent countless hygiene-related illnesses and deaths.

As Seipler said, “I know it sounds funny, but that little bar of soap on the counter in your hotel room can literally save a life.”

The gathering up of something used or dirty to give it new life is also one of the most loving traits of our Savior, Jesus. In that manner, after He fed a crowd of five thousand with five small barley loaves and two small fish, He still said to His disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted” (JOHN 6:12).

In our lives, when we feel “washed up,” God sees us not as wasted lives but as His miracles. Never throwaways in His sight, we have divine potential for new kingdom work. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17). 하나님의 강한 능력

허리케인 강풍이 거센 미시시피 강의 흐름마저 바꾸어 놓는, 불가능해 보이는 일이 실제로 일어났습니다. 2021년 8월 허리케인 아이다가 루이지애나 해변에 상륙했는데 그 결과 물이 “역류”하는 놀라운 일이 발생하여, 물이 실제로 몇 시간 동안 강 상류 쪽으로 거꾸로 흘러간 것입니다.

전문가들은 허리케인 하나가 발생하고 소멸하는 동안 핵폭탄 만 개와 맞먹는 에너지가 분출된다고 추산합니다! 강의 흐름마저 바꿀 수 있는 그런 엄청난 힘을 생각하면 출애굽기에 기록된 훨씬 더 큰 “역류”를 본 이스라엘 백성들의 반응을 이해할 수 있습니다.

수백 년 동안 노예생활을 하던 애굽에서 탈출한 이스라엘 백성들이 홍해에 다다랐습니다. 그들 앞에는 넓은 바다가 있었고 뒤에는 중무장한 애굽 군대가 있었습니다. 이렇게 불가능해 보이는 상황에서, “여호와께서 큰 동풍이 밤새도록 바닷물을 물러가게 하시니 물이 갈라져 바다가 마른 땅이 되어 이스라엘 자손이 바다 가운데를 육지로 걸어갔습니다”(출애굽기 14:21-22). 믿을 수 없는 강력한 힘이 눈앞에 펼쳐지는 가운데 구원을 받았던 이스라엘 백성들은 여호와를 경외했습니다(31절).

경외심은 광대하신 하나님의 능력을 경험할 때 나오는 자연스러운 반응입니다. 그러나 이스라엘 백성들은 거기서 그치지 않고 더 나아가 하나님을 믿었습니다(31절).

천지를 창조하신 하나님의 권능을 경험하는 우리도 그분의 능력에 경외심을 가지며 그런 하나님을 믿을 수 있습니다.

GOD’S MIGHTY POWER

The seemingly impossible happened when hurricane-force winds changed the flow of the mighty Mississippi River. In August 2021, Hurricane Ida came ashore on the coast of Louisiana, and the astonishing result was a “negative flow,” meaning water actually flowed upriver for several hours.

Experts estimate that over its life cycle a hurricane can expend energy equivalent to ten thousand nuclear bombs! Such incredible power to change the course of flowing water helps me understand the Israelites’ response to a far more significant “negative flow” recorded in Exodus.

While fleeing the Egyptians who’d enslaved them for centuries, the Israelites came to the edge of the Red Sea. In front of them was a wide body of water and behind them was the heavily armored Egyptian army. In that seemingly impossible situation, “the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land . . . and the Israelites went through the sea” (EXODUS 14:21–22). Rescued in that incredible display of power, “the people feared the Lord” (V. 31).

Responding with awe is natural after experiencing the immensity of God’s power. But it didn’t end there; the Israelites also “put their trust” in Him (V. 31).

As we experience God’s power in creation, we too can stand in awe of His might and place our trust in Him. - LISA M. SAMRA

믿음은 들음에서 나며

목사인 밥은 부상으로 목소리가 상한 후 15년동안 불안과 우울증에 시달렸습니다. 그는 목사가 말을 할 수 없다면 무슨 일을 할 수 있을까 하고 생각했습니다. 그는 이 문제로 힘들어하며 자신의 슬픔과 혼란을 하나님께 쏟아 냈습니다. 그러다 이런 생각을 했습니다. “내가 아는 내가 할 일 한가지는 하나님의 말씀을 따르는 것이다.” 성경을 읽는데 시간을 보내면서 하나님을 향한 그의 사랑이 커져갔습니다. “나는 말씀을 받아들이고 말씀 속으로 빠져드는데 내 인생을 바쳤다. 믿음은 들음에서 나고 들음은 그리스도의 말씀으로 말미암기 때문이다.”

“믿음은 들음에서 나온다”는 구절은 바울 사도가 로마서에서 한 말입니다. 바울은 같은 유대인 모두가 그리스도를 믿고 구원을 얻기를 간절히 바랐습니다(로마서 10:9). 그런데 어떻게 그들이 믿을 수 있을까요? 그것은 “들음에서 나며... 그리스도의 말씀으로 말미암은” 믿음을 통해서 그렇게 될 수 있습니다(17절).

밥 목사는 특히 성경을 읽으면서 그리스도의 말씀을 듣고 믿기를 구합니다. 그는 하루에 한 시간만 말을 할 수 있고 말할 때에도 통증이 계속 있습니다. 하지만 성경에 몰입함으로써 하나님으로부터 오는 평화와 만족을 계속해서 누리고 있습니다. 우리도 힘들 때에는 예수님이 우리에게 찾아오실 것을 믿을 수 있습니다. 어떤 어려움을 만나더라도 우리가 주님 말씀을 들을 때 주님은 우리의 믿음을 더욱 굳게 해주실 것입니다.

FAITH COMES FROM HEARING

When Pastor Bob suffered an injury that affected his voice, he entered fifteen years of crisis and depression. What, he wondered, does a pastor do who can’t talk? He struggled with this question, pouring out his grief and confusion to God. He reflected, “I only knew one thing to do—to go after the Word of God.” As he spent time reading the Bible, his love for God grew: “I’ve devoted my life to absorbing and immersing myself in the Scripture because faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of God.”

We find the phrase “faith comes from hearing” in the apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans. Paul longed for all of his fellow Jewish people to believe in Christ and be saved (ROMANS 10:9). How would they believe? Through the faith that “comes from hearing the message . . . through the word about Christ” (V. 17).

Pastor Bob seeks to receive and believe in Christ’s message, especially as he reads the Bible. He can only speak for an hour a day and has constant pain when he does so, but he continues to find peace and contentment from God through his immersion in Scripture. So too we can trust that Jesus will reveal Himself to us in our struggles. He will increase our faith as we hear His message, whatever challenges we face. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

한발한발

세명씩 한 조로 묶은 십여 개의 팀이 네 발 경주를 위해 준비하고 있었습니다. 바깥 쪽에 있는 사람들과 가운데 선 사람의 발목과 무릎을 색깔 있는 띠로 묶어 연결하고는 모든 3인조 팀이 결승선에 시선을 고정한 후, 호루라기를 불자 팀들이 앞으로 달려나갔습니다. 대부분 넘어져 발을 다시 내딛으려고 애를 썼습니다. 몇몇 그룹은 걷지 않고 깡충깡충 뛰었고 포기하는 팀도 있었습니다. 그런데 한 팀은 출발을 늦추면서 계획을 확인하고는 앞으로 나가면서 계속 소통을 했습니다. 그들은 휘청거리면서도 계속 걸어가 곧 모든 팀을 제쳤습니다. 그들은 한 발 한 발 맞추어 나가겠다는 의지가 있었기에 함께 결승선을 통과할 수 있었던 것입니다.

예수님을 믿는 공동체 안에서 하나님을 위해 산다는 것은 어쩌면 네 발 경주를 하며 앞으로 나아가려고 노력하는 것 만큼이나 힘들게 느껴집니다. 우리는 의견이 다른 사람들과 더불어 일할 때 자주 걸려 넘어집니다.

베드로는 기도하고 서로 대접하고 우리의 은사들을 사용하여 앞에 놓인 삶을 위해 서로 연합하며 손발을 맞추라고 말합니다. 그는 예수님을 믿는 자들이 “무엇보다도 뜨겁게 서로 사랑하며”(베드로전서 4:8), 불평 없이 대접하고, “각각 은사를 받은 대로 하나님의 여러 가지 은혜를 맡은 선한 청지기 같이 서로 봉사하라”(10절)고 권고합니다. 우리가 서로 소통하고 협력할 수 있도록 하나님께 도와 달라고 간구할 때, 우리는 세상 사람들에게 서로 다름을 존중하고 단결하여 함께 살아가는 모습을 보여주면서 경주에서 이길 수 있습니다.

STEP BY STEP

A dozen teams, each including three people standing shoulder to shoulder, prepared for the four-legged race. Each outside person bound to the person in the middle by colorful rags at their ankles and knees, every trio locked their eyes on the fin- ish line. When the whistle blew, the teams lunged forward. Most of them fell and struggled to regain their footing. A few groups chose to hop instead of walk. Some gave up. But one team delayed their start, confirmed their plan, and communicated as they moved forward. They stumbled along the way but pressed on and soon passed all the teams. Their willingness to cooperate, step by step, enabled them to cross the finish line together.

Living for God within the community of believers in Jesus often feels as frustrating as trying to move forward during a four-legged race. We often stumble when interacting with people who hold different opinions from us.

Peter speaks of prayer, hospitality, and using our gifts to align ourselves in unity for life ahead. He urges believers in Jesus to “love each other deeply” (1 PETER 4:8), to be hospitable without complaining, and to “serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (V. 10). When we ask God to help us communicate and cooperate, we can lead the race in showing the world how to celebrate differences and live together in unity. - XOCHITL DIXON

참된 신앙

대학 2학년을 마친 그해 여름에 같은 과 친구 하나가 갑자기 세상을 떠났습니다. 며칠 전에 만났을 때만 해도 그는 괜찮아 보였습니다. 젊었던 과 친구들과 나는 각자 여학생과 남학생 동아리에 가입하고는 형제 자매처럼 지내며 인생 최고의 시절을 보내고 있다고 생각했습니다.

그러나 친구의 죽음에 대해 가장 기억에 남는 것은 야고보 사도가 “참된 신앙”(야고보서 1:27)이라 말한 것을 남학생 동아리 친구들이 실천하는 것을 보게 된 것입니다. 동아리 소속 남학생들은 고인의 여동생에게 형제가 되어주었습니다. 그 형제들은 동생의 오빠가 죽은 지 여러 해가 지나서도 동생의 결혼식에 참석했고 베이비 샤워(출산할 임산부에게 아기용품을 선물로 주는 파티)에 참석하려고 멀리서 오기도 했습니다. 어떤 형제는 필요할 때마다 자신에게 연락하라고 동생에게 핸드폰을 선물하기도 했습니다.

야고보는 참된 신앙이란 “어려운 처지에 있는 고아와 과부들을 돌봐주는”(27절, 현대인의 성경) 것이라고 했습니다. 친구의 동생이 말 그대로 고아는 아니었지만 그녀에게는 더 이상 오빠가 없었습니다. 그녀의 새 “오빠들” 이 대신해서 그 빈 자리를 채워주었습니다.

그리고 이것은 예수님 안에서 참되고 정결한 삶을 살기를 원하는 우리 모두가 할 수 있는 일입니다. 바로 어려움에 처한 사람들을 돌보며(2:14-17) “말씀을 행하는 자가 되는”(22절) 것입니다. 주님을 믿는 우리의 신앙은 그분의 도우심으로 세상의 부정적인 영향으로부터 우리 자신을 지키며 연약한 사람들을 돌보게 합니다. 결국 이것이 하나님께서 인정하시는 참된 신앙입니다.

TRUE RELIGION

The summer after my sophomore year of college, a classmate died unexpectedly. I’d seen him just a few days prior and he looked fine. My classmates and I were young and in what we thought was the prime of our lives, having just become sisters and brothers after pledging our respective sorority and fraternity.

But what I remember most about my classmate’s death was witnessing my fraternity friends live out what the apostle James calls “genuine religion” (JAMES 1:27 NLT). The men in the fraternity became like brothers to the sister of the deceased. They attended her wedding and traveled to her baby shower years after her brother’s death. One even gifted her a cell phone to contact him whenever she needed to call.

True religion, according to James, is “to look after orphans and widows in their distress” (V. 27). While my friend’s sister wasn’t an orphan in the literal sense, she no longer had her brother. Her new “brothers” filled in the gap.

And that’s what all of us who want to practice true and pure life in Jesus can do—“do what [Scripture] says” (V. 22), including caring for those in need (2:14–17). Our faith in Him prompts us to look after the vulnerable as we keep ourselves from the negative influences of the world as He helps us. After all, it’s the true religion God accepts. - KATARA PATTON

자유롭게 살기

내가 자란 텍사스의 흑인 지역사회에서는 매년 6월 19일에 퍼레이드와 피크닉 행사를 열었습니다. 나는 십대가 되어서야 준틴스(Juneteenth; “June”과 “nineteenth”를 합친 말) 축제의 가슴 아픈 내력을 알게 되었습니다. 준틴스는 1865년에 텍사스의 노예들이 그보다 ‘2년 반 전’에 아브라함 링컨 대통령이 노예 해방령에 서명하여 그들에게 자유를 주었다는 사실을 알게 된 것을 기념하는 날입니다. 텍사스의 노예들은 해방된 것을 모르고 계속 노예 생활을 해왔던 것입니다.

자유인들도 노예처럼 살 수 있습니다. 바울은 갈라디아서에서 또 다른 종류의 노예 생활에 대해 썼습니다. 바로 과도한 종교 규율 아래 사는 삶입니다. 바울은 이 중요한 구절에서 독자들에게 이렇게 권면했습니다. “그리스도께서 우리를 자유롭게 하려고 자유를 주셨으니 그러므로 굳건하게 서서 다시는
종의 멍에를 메지 말라”(갈라디아서 5:1). 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 무엇을 먹을 것인지, 누구와 친구가 될 것인지와 같은 외적인 규제에서 이미 자유롭게 되었는데도, 많은 사람들이 여전히 노예처럼 살았던 것입니다.

안타깝지만 오늘날의 우리도 그럴 수 있습니다. 그러나 예수님은 우리가 주님을 믿는 순간 인간이 만든 종교 기준을 두려워하는 삶에서 우리를 자유롭게 해주셨습니다. 자유가 선포된 것입니다. 하나님의 권능 안에서 자유를 누리며 사시기를 바랍니다.

LIVE IN FREEDOM

In Texas, where I grew up, there were festive parades and picnics in Black communities every June 19. It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I learned the heartbreaking significance of Juneteenth (a word combining “June” and “nineteenth”) celebrations. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned that President Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation giving them their freedom—two-and-a-half years earlier. Enslaved people in Texas kept living in slavery because they didn’t know they’d been freed.

It’s possible to be free and yet live as slaves. In Galatians, Paul wrote about another kind of slavery: living life under the crushing demands of religious rules. In this pivotal verse, Paul encouraged his readers that “it is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (GALATIANS 5:1). Believers in Jesus had been set free from external regulations, including what to eat and who to befriend. Many, however, still lived as if they were enslaved.

Unfortunately, we can do the same thing today. But the reality is that Jesus set us free from living in fear of man-made religious standards the moment we trusted in Him. Freedom has been proclaimed. Let’s live it out in His power. - LISA M. SAMRA
