낡은 천막

“천막이 지쳤어!” 케냐 나이로비에서 목회하는 내 친구 폴이 알려온 소식입니다. 2015년부터 그 교회는 천막 같은 곳에 모여 예배를 드렸는데, 이제 “텐트가 낡아서 비가 오면 물이 샌다”는 것입니다.

친구의 글을 통해 그들의 천막이 구조적으로 약해진 이야기를 들으니 바울 사도가 우리 인간의 연약함에 대해 한 말이 떠오릅니다. “우리의 겉 사람은 낡아가나... 우리는 이 장막에서 살면서, 무거운 짐에 눌려서 탄식하고 있습니다”(고린도후서 4:16; 5:4, 새번역).

우리는 살면서 인간의 연약함을 비교적 일찍 알게 되지만 나이 들어가며 더 깊이 깨닫게 됩니다. 정말 세월 앞에 장사 없다는 말처럼 젊음의 활력은 늙어감의 현실에 어쩔 수 없이 굴복하고 맙니다(전도서 12:1-7 참조). 우리의 천막인 육체는 낡아져 갑니다.

하지만 천막, 곧 우리의 육체가 낡았다고 해서 우리의 믿음도 낡아지는 것은 아닙니다. 우리가 나이 들어도 소망과 열정은 사라지지 않습니다. 바울 사도는 “그러므로 우리가 낙심하지 아니 하노니”(고린도후서 4:16)라고 말합니다. 우리 몸을 만드신 그분은 성령을 통하여 우리 몸에 직접 거하십니다. 그리고 이 육신이 더 이상 감당하지 못하게 될 때, 우리는 무너지지 않고 아픔이 없는 집, 곧 “하나님께서 지으신 집 곧 하늘에 있는 영원한 집”(5:1) 에 머무르게 될 것입니다.

TIRED TENTS

“The tent is tired!” Those were the words of my friend Paul, who pastors a church in Nairobi, Kenya. Since 2015, the congregation has worshiped in a tentlike structure. Now, Paul writes, “Our tent is worn out and it is leaking when it rains.”

My friend’s words about their tent’s structural weaknesses remind us of the apostle Paul’s words regarding the frailty of our human existence. “Outwardly we are wasting away . . . . While we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:16; 5:4).

Though the awareness of our fragile human existence happens relatively early in life, we become more conscious of it as we age. Indeed, time picks our pockets. The vitality of youth surrenders reluctantly to the reality of aging (SEE ECCLESIASTES 12:1–7). Our bodies— our tents—get tired.

But tired tents need not equate to tired trust. Hope and heart needn’t fade as we age. “Therefore we do not lose heart,” the apostle says (2 CORINTHIANS 4:16). The One who has made our bodies has made Himself at home there through His Spirit. And when this body can no longer serve us, we’ll have a dwelling not subject to breaks and aches—we’ll “have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven” (5:1).

영원한 생명

“위니, 죽는 것을 두려워하지 말고 살아내지 못한 삶을 두려워해야 해.” 앵거스 터크의 이 말은 동화를 원작으로 제작된 영화 ‘터크 에버래스팅’에 나오는 것으로, 흥미롭게도 죽을 수 없는 등장인물이 한 말입니다. 이 이야기에서 터크 가족은 영생을 얻은 사람들입니다. 위니를 사랑하게 된 젊은 제임스 터크는 위니와 영원히 함께 살기를 바라는 마음에 그녀에게 영생하는 방법을 찾아보라고 간청합니다. 하지만 지혜로운 가장 앵거스는 그저 영원히 살아 있다는 것이 삶을 충족시켜 주는 것은 아니라는 사실을 깨닫고 있었습니다.

이 땅의 문화는 우리가 영원히 건강하고 젊고 활력이 넘칠 수 있다면 정말 행복할 것이라고 말합니다. 하지만 우리의 만족은 그런 데에 있지 않습니다. 예수님은 십자가를 지시기 전 제자들과 앞날의 신자들을 위해 기도하셨습니다. “영생은 곧 유일하신 참 하나님과 그가 보내신 자 예수 그리스도를 아는 것이니이다”(요한복음 17:3). 우리 삶의 만족은 예수님을 믿어 하나님과의 관계를 맺음으로써 얻을 수 있습니다. 예수님은 우리가 바라보는 미래의 소망이자 현재의 기쁨입니다.

예수님은 제자들이 새로운 삶의 모습을 갖게 해달라고 기도하셨습니다. 그것은 하나님께 순종하고(6절), 하나님 아버지께서 예수님을 보내셨다는 것을 믿으며(8절), 하나로 연합하는 삶입니다(11절). 예수님을 믿는 우리는 예수님과
함께 장차 누릴 영생을 바라보고 삽니다. 그러나, 이 세상에 사는 동안에도 우리는 예수님이 약속하신 “풍성하고 만족하는 삶”(10:10)을 바로 여기서, 바로 지금 누릴 수 있습니다.

LIFE EVERLASTING

“Don’t be afraid of death, Winnie,” said Angus Tuck, “be afraid of the unlived life.” That quote from the bookturned- film Tuck Everlasting is made more interesting by the fact that it comes from a character who can’t die. In the story, the Tuck family has become immortal. Young Jesse Tuck, who falls in love with Winnie, begs her to seek immortality too so they can be together forever. But wise Angus understands that simply enduring forever doesn’t bring fulfillment.

Our culture tells us that if we could be healthy, young, and energetic forever, we would be truly happy. But that’s not where our fulfillment is found. Before He went to the cross, Jesus prayed for His disciples and for future believers. He said, “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (JOHN 17:3). Our fulfillment in life comes from a relationship with God through faith in Jesus. He’s our hope for the future and joy for this present day.

Jesus prayed that His disciples would take on the patterns of new life: that they would obey God (V. 6), believe that Jesus was sent by God the Father (V. 8), and be united as one (V. 11). As believers
in Christ, we look forward to a future eternal life with Him. But during these days we live on earth, we can live the “rich and satisfying life” (10:10 NLT) that He promised—right here, right now.

믿음의 씨

지난 봄, 잔디밭에 통기 작업을 하기 전날 밤, 거센 바람이 불어 단풍나무 씨들이 한꺼번에 떨어졌습니다. 잔디 공기주입기로 땅에 작은 “구멍” 을 내어 굳은 흙을 잘게 부수고 나니 잔디밭에 단풍나무 씨 몇 백 개가 자연히 심겨져, 불과 2주만에 우리 잔디밭에 어린 단풍나무들이 우거지기 시작했습니다.

착잡한 마음으로 흩어진 나뭇잎을 살피다가, 나는 나무 한 그루가 낳은 새 생명의 왕성한 번식력에 놀라움을 금치 못했습니다. 새로 자라는 각각의 어린 나무들은 나 한 사람이 다른 사람들과 나눌 수 있는 그리스도 안의 새 생명의 모습을 보여주었습니다. 우리는 각자의 인생 여정에서 “[우리] 속에 있는 소망에 관한 이유를 대답할”(베드로전서 3:15) 기회를 수없이 가지게 될 것입니다.

우리가 예수님의 소망 안에서 “의를 위하여 고난을 받으면”(14절), 우리 주위 사람들이 그것을 볼 것이며 아직 하나님을 인격적으로 알지 못하는 사람들은 궁금해할 것입니다. 그들이 궁금하여 물어볼 때 우리가 준비되어 있다면 하나님이 새 생명으로 태어나게 하실 씨를 그들에게 심을 수 있을 것입니다. 영적 폭풍이 몰아치듯 한 번에 모든 사람과 나눌 필요는 없습니다. 받을 준비가 되어 있는 마음에 부드럽고 공손하게 믿음의 씨를 뿌리면 됩니다.

SEEDS OF FAITH

Last spring, the night before our lawn was to be aerated, a violent windstorm blew the seeds off our maple tree in one fell swoop. So when the aerating machine broke up the compacted soil by pulling small “cores” out of the ground, it planted hundreds of maple seeds in my yard. Just two short weeks later, I had the beginnings of a maple forest growing up through my lawn!

As I (frustratedly) surveyed the misplaced foliage, I was struck by the prolific abundance of new life a single tree had spawned. Each of the miniature trees became a picture for me of the new life in Christ that I—as merely one person—can share with others. We each will have countless opportunities to “give the reason for the hope that [we] have” (1 PETER 3:15) in the course of our lives.

When we “suffer for what is right” with the hope of Jesus (V. 14), it’s visible to those around us and might just become a point of curiosity to those who don’t yet know God personally. If we’re ready when they ask, then we may share the seed through which God brings forth new life. We don’t have to share it with everyone all at once—in some kind of spiritual windstorm. Rather, we gently and respectfully drop the seed of faith into a heart ready to receive it.

펩이 주지사 아내가 기르던 고양이를 죽였다고 신문에서 보도했지만 그것은 사실이 아니었습니다. 펩이 잘못한 것이라고는 주지사의 관저에 있는 소파를 입으로 씹었던 것뿐이었습니다.

펩은 1920년대에 펜실베이니아 주지사 기포드 핀초가 기르던 활기 넘치는 어린 래브라도 리트리버였습니다. 그 개는 실제로 이스턴 스테이트 교도소로 보내져 거기서 범죄자 식별 번호와 함께 범인 식별용 사진을 찍었습니다. 한
신문 기자가 그 이야기를 듣고는 고양이 이야기를 지어냈습니다. 그의 기사가 신문에 보도되는 바람에 많은 사람들은 펩이 진짜로 고양이를 죽인 것으로 믿었습니다.

다른 사람들이 어떻게 말하거나 생각하든, 우리의 삶에 대한 하나님의 목적은 변하지 않습니다. 남들이 우리에 대해 안 좋은 이야기를 할 때에도 하나님의 생각과 우리를 향한 그분의 사랑이 가장 중요하다는 사실을 잊지 마십시오.

WAGGING TAILS AND TONGUES

The newspaper declared that Pep had taken the life of the cat belonging to the governor’s wife—but he didn’t do it. The only thing he may have been guilty of was chewing the sofa at the governor’s mansion.

Pep was a rambunctious young Labrador retriever owned by Pennsylvania’s governor Gifford Pinchot in the 1920s. The dog actually was sent to Eastern State Penitentiary, where his mug shot was taken with a prisoner identification number. When a newspaper reporter heard about it, he made up the cat story. Because his report appeared in the newspaper, many believed Pep really was a cat-killer.

Israel’s King Solomon knew well the power of misinformation. He wrote, “The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts” (PROVERBS 18:8). Sometimes our fallen
human nature causes us to want to believe things about others that aren’t true.

Yet even when others believe untruths about us, God can still use us for good. In reality, the governor sent Pep to prison so he could be a friend to the inmates there—and he served for many years as a pioneer therapy dog.

God’s purposes for our lives still stand, regardless of what others say or think. When others gossip about us, remember that His opinion—and His love for us—is what matters most.

언제나 신실하신 분

나는 염려를 많이 합니다. 혼자 이런저런 생각을 하는 이른 아침은 내게 최악입니다. 그래서 마음이 약해질 때 볼 수 있도록 허드슨 테일러의 인용구를 욕실 거울에 붙여 놓았습니다. “하나님은 살아계시다. 그분은 성경을 통하여 말씀하셨다. 그분의 모든 말씀은 진실하며, 약속하신 모든 것을 행하실 것이다.”

오랫동안 하나님과 동행한 삶에서 우러난 허드슨 테일러의 말은 우리에게 하나님이 어떤 분이라는 것과, 우리가 병들고 가난하고 외롭고 슬플 때 하나님이 하실 수 있는 모든 일들을 상기시켜 줍니다. 그는 하나님이 신실하시다는 것을 단지 머리로만 ‘안’ 것이 아니라 직접 ‘체험’했습니다. 그가 하나님의 약속을 신뢰하고 하나님께 순종함으로 수천 명의 중국인들이 예수님께 헌신했습니다.

다윗도 하나님과 그분의 방법들을 경험함으로써 하나님이 신실하시다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 다윗은 선하시고 긍휼하시며 자신의 모든 약속에 신실하신 하나님을 경험하여 이를 찬양한 시편 145편을 기록했습니다. 우리가 하나님을 믿고 따를 때, 하나님은 말씀하신 그대로이시며 자신의 말을 지키시는 분이라는 것을 깨닫고 더 잘 이해하게 됩니다(13절). 그리고 다윗처럼 하나님을 찬양하며 그분을 다른 이들에게 전하게 됩니다(10-12절).

ALWAYS TRUSTWORTHY

I’m a worrier. Early mornings are the worst because I’m alone with my thoughts. So I taped this quote from Hudson Taylor on my bathroom mirror, where I can see it when I’m feeling vulnerable: “There is a living God. He has spoken in the Bible. He means what He says and will do all He has promised.”

Taylor’s words came from years of walking with God and remind us of who He is and all He can do through our times of illness, poverty, loneliness, and grief. He didn’t merely know that God is trustworthy—he’d experienced His trustworthiness. And because he’d trusted God’s promises and obeyed Him, thousands of Chinese people gave their lives to Jesus.

Experiencing God and His ways helped David know that He’s trustworthy. He wrote Psalm 145, a song of praise to the God he’d experienced to be good, compassionate, and faithful to all His promises. When we trust and follow God, we realize (or understand better) that He is who He says He is and that He’s faithful to His word (V. 13). And, like David, we respond by praising Him and telling others about Him (VV. 10−12).

When we face worrisome times, God can help us not to falter in our walk with Him, for He is trustworthy (HEBREWS 10:23).

크게 웃음

코미디언 존 브래니안이 이런 말을 했습니다. “우리가 웃음을 생각해낸 것이 아닙니다. 웃음은 우리의 아이디어가 아니었습니다. [하나님께서] 우리가 인생을 살아가는 데에 웃음이 필요하다는 것을 아시고 우리에게 주신 것입니다. [왜냐하면] 하나님은 우리가 어려움을 겪을 것을 아셨고, 곤경에 빠질 것도 아셨으며, 이런저런 일이 닥칠 것도 아셨기 때문입니다... 웃음은 선물입니다.”

하나님이 만드신 피조물들을 간단히 살펴보면, 기이하게 생겼거나(오리 부리를 가진 오리너구리) 익살스러운(장난기 많은 수달 같은) 것들이 웃음을 자아냅니다. 주님은 바다에 사는 포유동물과 날지 못하는 다리가 긴 새도 만드셨습니다. 하나님은 분명히 유머 감각을 가지고 계십니다. 그리고 우리는 하나님의 형상 대로 창조되었기 때문에 우리 또한 웃는 기쁨을 누립니다.

성경에서 ‘웃음’이라는 단어가 처음 나오는 곳은 아브라함과 사라의 이야기입니다. 하나님은 이 나이 많은 부부에게 자녀를 약속하셨습니다. “네 몸에서 날 자가 네 상속자가 되리라”(창세기 15:4). 그리고 또 “하늘을 우러러 뭇 별을 셀 수 있나 보라... 네 자손이 이와 같으리라”(5절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 사라가 아흔 살에 마침내 출산을 하자 아브라함은 아들의 이름을 “웃음” 이라는 뜻의 이삭이라고 지었습니다. 사라는 이렇게 외쳤습니다. “하나님이 나를 웃게 하시니 듣는 자가 다 나와 함께 웃으리로다”(21:6). 사라는 그 나이에 아이에게 젖을 먹일 수 있다는 사실에 놀랐습니다! 하나님은 아이를 낳을 거라는 이야기를 듣고 웃었던 사라의 회의적인 웃음(18:12)을 진정한 기쁨의 웃음으로 바꾸어 주셨습니다.

웃음을 선물로 주신 하나님께 감사드립니다!

LAUGHING OUT LOUD

Comedian John Branyan said, “We didn’t think up laughter; that wasn’t our idea. That was given to us by [God who] knew we were going to need it to get through life. [Because] He knew we were going to have hardship, He knew were going to have struggles, He knew . . . stuff was going to happen. . . . Laughter is a gift.”

A quick look at the creatures God made can bring laughter, whether because of their oddities (such as duck-billed platypuses) or antics (such as playful otters). He made mammals that live in the ocean and long-legged birds that can’t fly. God clearly has a sense of humor; and because we’re created in His image, we too have the joy of laughter.

We first see the word laughter in the Bible in the story of Abraham and Sarah. God promised this elderly couple a child: “A son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir” (GENESIS 15:4). And God had said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars . . . . So shall your offspring be” (V. 5). When Sarah finally gave birth at ninety, Abraham named their son Isaac, which means “laughter.” As Sarah exclaimed, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me” (21:6). It amazed her that she could nurse a child at her age! God transformed her skeptical laughter when she’d heard she’d give birth (18:12) into laughter of sheer joy.

Thank God for the gift of laughter!

잡초에 물주기

올봄에 잡초들이 마치 영화 ‘쥐라기 공원’의 한 장면같이 우리 집 뒤뜰을 뒤덮었습니다. 한 잡초는 너무 커져서 그것을 뽑으려다 내가 다칠 것 같아 걱정이 될 정도였습니다. 내려치려고 삽을 찾다가 딸이 그 잡초에 실제로 물을 주고 있는 것을 보았습니다. “왜 그 잡초에 물을 주는 거야?”라고 소리치자, 딸은 “얼마나 자라는지 보고 싶어서요!”라고 장난스럽게 웃으며 대답했습니다.

우리는 ‘일부러’ 잡초를 키우지 않습니다. 하지만 생각해 보니 우리는 때로 영적인 삶의 “잡초”에 물을 주어 우리의 성장을 가로막는 욕망들을 키운다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다.

WATERING THE WEEDS

This spring, weeds attacked our backyard like something out of Jurassic Park. One got so big that when I tried to pull it out, I feared I might injure myself. Before I could find a spade to whack it down, I noticed that my daughter was actually pouring water on it. “Why are you watering the weeds?!” I exclaimed. “I want to see how big it will get!” she replied with an impish grin.

Weeds aren’t something we intentionally nourish. But as I thought about it, I realized that sometimes we do water the “weeds” in our spiritual lives, feeding desires that strangle our growth.

Paul writes about this in Galatians 5:13–26, where he contrasts living by the flesh with living by the Spirit. He says trying to follow the rules alone won’t establish the kind of “weed-free” life we long for. Instead, to avoid watering the weeds, he instructs us to “walk by the Spirit.” He adds that being in regular step with God is what frees us from the impulse to “gratify the desires of the flesh” (V. 16).

It’s a lifelong process to fully understand Paul’s teaching. But I love the simplicity of his guidance: instead of growing something unwanted by nourishing our own self-focused desires, when we’re cultivating our relationship with God, we grow fruit and reap the harvest of a godly life (VV. 22–25).

강하고 선하심

젊은 대학 교목이 어려움을 겪고 있었습니다. 내가 하나님의 인도와 도움을 구하는 기도를 하고 있는지, 바울의 말대로 쉬지 않고 기도하는지 직설적으로 물어보자 그는 갈등하는 모습을 보이며 이렇게 고백했습니다. “저는 이제 기도의 능력이 잘 안 믿어집니다.” 그리고 괴로운 표정으로 계속 말했습니다. “그리고 하나님이 듣고 계시다는 확신이 안 섭니다. 지금 돌아가는 세상을 좀 보세요.” 이 젊은 리더는 자신의 힘에 의지하여 사역을 일으켜보려 하다가 안타깝게 실패를 하고 있었습니다. 왜 그럴까요? 그는 하나님을 거부하고 있었던 것입니다.

교회의 머릿돌이신 예수님도 항상 거부당하셨습니다. 사실 그의 백성들이 먼저 주님을 거부했습니다(요한복음 1:11). 오늘날에도 많은 사람들이 여전히 주님을 거부하고, 자신의 계획과 꿈과 그외 신뢰할 수 없는 기반을 터전으로 삼아 그 위에 자신의 삶과 일과 심지어 교회를 세워보려고 애를 씁니다. 그러나 우리의 선한 구주만이 우리의 힘과 구원이 되십니다(시편 118:14). 진실로 “건축자가 버린 돌이 집 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되었습니다”(22절).

예수님은 우리 삶을 좌우하는 모퉁이마다 계셔서, 믿는 우리들이 주님을 위해 이루고자 하는 모든 일을 유일하게 제대로 짜맞추어 주시는 분입니다. 그래서 우리는 주님께 이렇게 기도합니다. “여호와여 구하옵나니 이제 구원하소서 여호와여 우리가 구하옵나니 이제 형통하게 하소서”(25절). 그 결과는 무엇일까요? “여호와의 이름으로 오는 자가 복이 있음이여”(26절) 함과 같습니다. 강하고 선하신 주님께 우리 모두 감사드릴 수 있기를 바랍니다.

STRONG AND GOOD

The young campus minister was troubled. But he looked conflicted when I dared to ask if he prays . . . for God’s direction . . . for His help. To pray, as Paul urged, without ceasing. In reply, the young man confessed, “I’m not sure I believe anymore in prayer.” He frowned. “Or believe that God is listening. Just look at the world.” That young leader was “building” a ministry in his own strength and, sadly, he was failing. Why? He was rejecting God.

Jesus, as the cornerstone of the church, has always been rejected—starting, in fact, with His own people (JOHN 1:11). Many still reject Him today, struggling to build their lives, work, even churches on lesser foundations—their own schemes, dreams, and other unreliable ground. Yet, our good Savior alone is our strength and defense (PSALM 118:14). Indeed, “the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” (V. 22).

Set at the vital corner of our lives, He provides the only right alignment for anything His believers seek to accomplish for Him. To Him, therefore, we pray, “Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success!” (V. 25). The result? “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” (V. 26). May we give thanks to Him because He’s strong and good.

내려놓으라

어거스틴의 자서전 ‘고백록’은 예수님을 향한 그의 길고 험했던 여정을 그리고 있습니다. 한 번은 황제에게 아첨하는 연설을 하기 위해 말을 타고 왕궁으로 가고 있었습니다. 준비한 가식적인 칭송의 문구들을 가지고 고심하던 그는 한 술 취한 거지가 “농담을 지껄이며 웃어대는” 것을 보았습니다. 그는 자신이 이런 떳떳치 못한 일을 해서라도 얻으려 했던 덧없는 행복을 이 주정꾼은 별로 애쓰지 않고도 이미 다 가지고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그래서 어거스틴은 세상적인 성공을 위한 노력을 내려놓았습니다.

그러나 그는 여전히 욕망의 노예였습니다. 자신이 죄에서 돌이키지 않고는 예수님께로 돌아올 수 없다는 것을 알고 있었지만 여전히 음행과 씨름하고 있었습니다. 그래서 그는 이렇게 기도했습니다. “나에게 순결을 주십시오... 하지만 지금은 아닙니다.”

LET IT GO

Augustine’s autobiographical Confessions describes his long and winding journey to Jesus. On one occasion, he was riding to the palace to give a flattering speech for the emperor. He was fretting over his deceptive applause lines when he noticed a drunken beggar “joking and laughing.” He realized the drunk already had whatever fleeting happiness his shifty career might bring, and with much less effort. So Augustine stopped striving for worldly success.

But he was still enslaved by lust. He knew he couldn’t turn to Jesus without turning from sin, and he still struggled with sexual immorality. So he prayed, “Grant me chastity . . . but not yet.”

Augustine stumbled along, torn between salvation and sin, until finally he had enough. Inspired by others who had turned to Jesus, he opened a Bible to Romans 13:13–14. “Let us behave decently . . . not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality . . . . Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.”

That did it. God used those inspired words to break Augustine’s chains of lust and brought him “into the kingdom of the Son . . . in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (COLOSSIANS 1:13–14). Augustine became a bishop who remained tempted by fame and lust, but he now knew whom to see when he sinned. He turned to Jesus. Have you?

너무 짧아서 쓸모없는 끈

마가렛 이모의 검소함은 모두가 다 압니다. 이모가 돌아가신 후 조카들은 슬프면서도 즐거운 마음으로 이모의 유품을 정리하기 시작했습니다. 서랍 안에서 단정하게 정리된 작은 조각의 끈들을 모아둔 작은 플라스틱 가방이 나왔습니다. 가방의 이름표에는 “짧아서 쓸 수 없는 끈들”이라고 적혀 있었습니다.

쓸모없는 물건인 줄 알면서도 따로 분류해 간직하는 사람들은 무슨 이유로 그럴까요? 어쩌면 한때 극심한 가난을 당해보았기 때문일 수도 있을 것입니다.

이스라엘 백성들은 애굽의 종살이에서 벗어날 때 고생스러운 삶을 떠났습니다. 그러나 그들은 출애굽 과정에서 역사하신 하나님의 기적의 손길을 곧 잊어버리고 먹을 양식이 없다고 불평하기 시작했습니다.

하나님은 그들이 하나님을 신뢰하기 원하셨습니다. 하나님은 광야에서 양식으로 만나를 공급하시며, 모세에게 “백성이 나가서 일용할 것을 날마다 거둘 것이라”(출애굽기 16:4)고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님은 또한 안식일에는 만나가 내리지 않으므로 6일째에는 두 배로 거두라고 명령하셨습니다(5, 25 절). 이스라엘 백성 중에 어떤 사람들은 그 말을 들었지만, 어떤 사람들은 듣지 않아서 예상했던 대가를 치뤘습니다(27–28절).

STRING TOO SHORT TO USE

Aunt Margaret’s frugality was legendary. After she passed away, her nieces began the nostalgically bittersweet task of sorting her belongings. In a drawer, neatly arrayed inside a small plastic bag, they discovered an assortment of small pieces of string. The label read: “String too short to use.”

What would motivate someone to keep and categorize something they knew to be of no use? Perhaps this person once knew extreme deprivation.

When the Israelites fled slavery in Egypt, they left behind a life of hardship. But they soon forgot God’s miraculous hand in their exodus and started complaining about the lack of food.

God wanted them to trust Him. He provided manna for their desert diet, telling Moses, “The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day” (EXODUS 16:4). God also instructed them to gather twice as much on the sixth day, because on the Sabbath no manna would fall (VV. 5, 25). Some of the Israelites listened. Some didn’t, with predictable results (VV. 27–28).

In times of plenty and times of desperation, it’s tempting to try to cling, to hoard, in a desperate attempt at control. There’s no need to take everything into our own frantic hands. No need to “save scraps of string”—or to hoard anything at all. Our faith is in God, who has promised, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (HEBREWS 13:5).
