성령 안에서 자유롭게

오빌과 윌버 라이트 형제는 비행기 조종사 면허가 없었습니다. 둘 다 대학을 다니지도 않았습니다. 그들은 단지 하늘을 날고 싶은 꿈과 용기를 지닌 자전거 정비사였습니다. 1903년 12월 17일, 그들은 ‘라이트 플라이어호’를 교대로 네 차례 조종했습니다. 가장 긴 비행시간은 단 1분에 불과했지만 이 사건은 이 세상을 완전히 바꿔 놓았습니다.

베드로와 요한도 설교자 자격증이 없었습니다. 둘 다 신학교에 다니지 않았습니다. 그들은 단지 예수님의 영이 충만하여 담대히 이렇게 복음을 선포한 어부들이었습니다. “다른 이로써는 구원을 받을 수 없나니 천하 사람 중에 구원을 받을 만한 다른 이름을 우리에게 주신 일이 없음이라”(사도행전 4:12).

라이트 형제의 이웃들은 그들의 성과를 바로 인정하지 않았습니다. 그 지역의 신문은 그들의 이야기를 믿지 않았고, 설령 사실이라 해도 비행이라 인정하기에는 너무 짧다고 했습니다. 비행 방법과 비행기 제작 보완에 몇 년이 더 소요된 후 마침내 사람들은 그들의 성과를 인정해 주었습니다.

당시 종교지도자들은 베드로와 요한을 좋아하지 않았고, 사람들에게 예수님에 관해 말하지 말라고 명령했습니다. 그러나 베드로는 ‘그럴 수 없다’ 면서 “우리는 보고 들은 것을 말하지 아니할 수 없다”(20절)고 했습니다.

당신에게 어떤 일을 위한 자격증이 없을 지도 모릅니다. 어쩌면 자격증을 소유한 이들에게 무시당했을지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만 괜찮습니다. 당신에게 예수님의 영이 있다면 자유롭게 주님을 위해 담대히 살 수 있습니다!

FREE IN THE SPIRIT

Neither Orville nor Wilbur Wright had a pilot’s license. Neither had gone to college. They were bicycle mechanics with a dream and the courage to try to fly. On December 17, 1903, they took turns piloting their Wright Flyer on four separate flights. The longest lasted only a minute, but it changed our world forever.

Neither Peter nor John had a preaching license. Neither had gone to seminary. They were fishermen who, filled with the Spirit of Jesus, courageously proclaimed the good news: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (ACTS 4:12).

The Wright brothers’ neighbors didn’t immediately appreciate their accomplishment. Their hometown newspaper didn’t believe their story, and said that even if true, the flights were too brief to be significant. It took several more years of flying and refining their planes before the public recognized what they had truly done.

The religious leaders didn’t like Peter and John, and they ordered them to stop telling others about Jesus. Peter said, No way. “We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard” (V. 20).

You may not be on the approved list. Perhaps you’re scorned by those who are. No matter. If you have the Spirit of Jesus, you’re free to live boldly for Him!

초콜릿 눈송이

스위스에 위치한 올텐에서 초콜릿 부스러기가 쏟아지며 마을 전체를 덮어버리자 주민들은 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 인근 초콜릿 공장 환기 시스템의 오작동으로 코코아 가루가 공기 중으로 날아가서 일대가 맛있는 과자로 뒤덮인 것입니다. 초콜릿으로 덮인 세상은 초콜릿을 좋아하는 이들에게는 그야말로 꿈같은 일입니다!

초콜릿은 우리에게 필요한 영양을 적절히 공급해줄 수 없지만, 하나님께서 하늘에서 쏟아 부으신 만나는 이스라엘 민족에게 충분한 영양을 공급해 주었습니다. 그들은 광야를 지날 때 애굽에 두고 온 각종 음식을 떠올리며 불평하기 시작했습니다. 그래서 하나님은 “하늘에서 양식을 비 같이” 내려 그들이 살아갈 수 있게 하겠다고 하셨습니다(출애굽기 16:4). 매일 아침마다 이슬이 마르고 나면 얇은 음식 조각이 남아 있었습니다. 약 200만 명에 달하는 이스라엘 민족은 그날 필요한 만큼만 음식을 거두라는 지시를 받았습니다. 광야를 지나는 40년 동안 그들은 하나님이 초자연적으로 마련해주신 만나를 통해 영양을 공급받았습니다.

만나는 “깟씨 같이 희고 맛은 꿀 섞은 과자 같았다”(31절)는 것 외에는 아는 것이 거의 없습니다. 만나가 꾸준히 먹게 되는 초콜릿 같은 매력은 없을지 몰라도, 하나님께서 그의 백성을 위해 공급하신 달콤한 음식임에는 틀림없습니다. 만나는 매일 우리를 붙들어주고 영생을 약속해 주는 “생명의 떡”(요한복음 6:48)으로 자신을 묘사하신 예수님을 가리켜 보여줍니다(51절).

CHOCOLATE SNOWFLAKES

Residents of Olten, Switzerland, were surprised by a shower of chocolate shavings covering the entire town. The ventilation system at a nearby chocolate factory had malfunctioned, sending cocoa into the air and dusting the area with confectionary goodness. The chocolate coating sounds like a dream come true for chocoholics!

While chocolate doesn’t adequately provide for one’s nutritional needs, God supplied the Israelites with heavenly showers that did. As they traveled through the desert, they began to grumble about the variety of food they’d left behind in Egypt. In response, God said He would “rain down bread from heaven” to sustain them (EXODUS 16:4). When the morning dew dried up each day, a thin flake of food remained. Approximately two million Israelites were instructed to gather as much as they needed that day. For forty years of their desert wanderings, they were nourished by God’s supernatural provision in manna.

We know little about manna except that it was “white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey” (V. 31). Though manna may not sound as appealing as a steady diet of chocolate, the sweetness of God’s provision for His people is clear. Manna points us to Jesus who described Himself as the “bread of life” (JOHN 6:48) that sustains us daily and assures us of life eternal (V. 51).

불순종의 결말을 초월한 소망

홧김에 일을 저지른 후 후회한 적이 있습니까? 아들이 마약 중독에 시달릴 때 나는 거친 말로 아들의 행동을 질책했습니다. 내 분노는 아들을 더욱 낙담시킬 뿐이었습니다. 그러나 아들은 마침내 그에게 생명과 소망에 대해 이야기해 준 신자들을 우연히 만나 얼마 후 중독에서 벗어났습니다.

믿음의 본이었던 모세조차 훗날 후회한 행동을 한 일이 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 광야에서 물이 부족하자 격렬하게 불만을 터뜨렸습니다. 그래서 하나님은 모세와 아론에게 구체적인 지시를 하셨습니다. “그들이 보는 앞에서 저 바위에게 명령하여라. 그러면 그 바위가 그 속에 있는 물을 밖으로 흘릴 것이다”(신명기 20:8, 새번역). 하지만 모세는 분노에 차서 “반역한 너희여 들으라 우리가 너희를 위하여 이 반석에서 물을 내랴”(10절)라고 하며 기적의 공로를 하나님이 아닌 자신과 아론의 것으로 돌렸습니다. 이렇게 하나님의 말씀을 직접 순종하지 않고 모세는 “그의 손을 들어 그의 지팡이로 반석을 두 번 쳤습니다”(11절).

물은 솟아 나왔지만 그 불순종의 결말은 참담했습니다. 모세와 아론은 하나님께서 그의 백성에게 허락하신 땅에 들어가지 못하게 되었습니다. 그래도 자비하신 하나님은 모세가 먼 거리에서나마 그 땅을 바라볼 수 있게 하셨습니다 (27:12-13).

모세에게 그러셨듯이, 하나님은 지금도 불순종의 광야에 있는 우리를 은혜로 만나 주십니다. 하나님은 예수님의 죽음과 부활을 통해 자비롭게 용서와 소망을 베풀어주십니다. 우리가 어디에 있었으며 무엇을 했든, 우리가 하나님께로 돌이킬 때 하나님은 우리를 생명으로 인도하실 것입니다.

HOPE BEYOND CONSEQUENCES

Have you ever done something in anger you later regretted? When my son was wrestling with drug addiction, I said some harsh things in reaction to his choices. My anger only discouraged him more. But eventually he encountered believers who spoke life and hope to him, and in time he was set free.

Even someone as exemplary in faith as Moses did something he later regretted. When the people of Israel were in the desert and water was scarce, they complained bitterly. So God gave Moses and Aaron specific instructions: “Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water” (NUMBERS 20:8). But Moses reacted in anger, giving himself and Aaron credit for the miracle instead of God: “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” (V. 10). Then he disobeyed God directly and “raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff” (V. 11).

Even though water flowed, there were tragic consequences. Neither Moses nor Aaron was allowed to enter the land God promised His people. But He was still merciful, allowing Moses to see it from afar (27:12–13).

As with Moses, God still mercifully meets us in the desert of our disobedience to Him. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, He kindly offers us forgiveness and hope. No matter where we’ve been or what we’ve done, if we turn to Him, He’ll lead us into life.

예수님 따라하기

인도네시아 바다와 호주의 그레이트 배리어 리프 근처 바다에 “위장술의 달인”이 서식하고 있습니다. 이 흉내쟁이 문어는 다른 문어들처럼 피부 색소를 주위 환경처럼 바꾸어 자신을 숨길 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 이 영리한 생물은 위협을 받으면 자신의 모습과 동작 패턴, 행동을 독성이 강한 쏠배감펭이나 심지어는 치명적인 바다뱀처럼 바꾸기도 합니다.

이 문어와는 달리 예수님을 믿는 신자들은 우리 주변 세상에서 드러나 보일 수밖에 없습니다. 우리는 우리를 반대하는 사람들에게서 위협을 느끼기도 하기 때문에 그리스도인으로 보이고 싶지 않은 유혹을 받을 수도 있습니다. 하지만 바울 사도는 우리 삶의 모든 면에서 예수님을 드러내고 우리의 몸을 “하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 산 제물”(로마서 12:1)로 드리라고 권면합니다.

친구나 가족들이 우리에게 “이 시대의 풍조”(2절, 새번역)를 따르라고 강요할지도 모릅니다. 그러나 우리는 하나님의 자녀로서 우리가 믿는다고 말하는 것을 삶으로 보여줌으로써 우리가 섬기는 분이 누구인지를 보여줄 수 있습니다. 우리가 말씀에 순종하고 사랑이신 그분의 성품을 비춰줄 때, 순종의 상급이 그 어떤 손실보다 더 크다는 사실을 우리 삶이 보여주게 될 것입니다. 오늘 어떻게 예수님을 따라해 보시겠습니까?

MIMIC JESUS

A “master of disguise” lives in the waters of Indonesia and in the Great Barrier Reef. The mimic octopus, like other octopuses, can change its skin pigment to blend in with its surroundings. This intelligent creature also changes its shape, movement pattern, and behavior when threatened to mimic such creatures as the venomous lionfish and even deadly sea snakes.

Unlike the mimic octopus, believers in Jesus are meant to stand out in the world that surrounds us. We may feel threatened by those who disagree with us and become tempted to blend in so we won’t be recognized as followers of Christ. The apostle Paul, however, urges us to offer our bodies as a “living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God” (ROMANS 12:1), representing Jesus in every aspect of our lives.

Friends or family members may try to pressure us to conform to the “pattern of this world” (V. 2). But we can show who we serve by aligning our lives with what we say we believe as God’s children. When we obey the Scriptures and reflect His loving character, our lives can demonstrate that the rewards of obedience are always greater than any loss. How will you mimic Jesus today?

변치 않으시는 하나님

회색 배경에 부츠 자국이 찍혀 있는 역사적으로 상징적인 한 사진이 있습니다. 그것은 우주 비행사 버즈 올드린이 1969년 달에 남긴 발자국입니다. 과학자들은 수십 년이 지났지만 이 발자국이 그곳에 여전히 남아 있을 것이라고 말합니다. 달에는 바람이나 물이 없어서 어떤 것도 침식되지 않으므로 달 표면의 풍경은 그대로 남아 있을 것입니다.

UNCHANGING GOD

An iconic photo shows the tread of a boot against a gray background. It’s astronaut Buzz Aldrin’s footprint, which he left on the moon in 1969. Scientists say that footprint is likely still there, unchanged after all these years. Without wind or water, nothing on the moon gets eroded, so what happens on the lunar landscape stays there.

It’s even more awesome to reflect on the constant presence of God Himself. James writes, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (JAMES 1:17). The apostle puts this in the context of our own struggles: “When troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy” (V. 2 NLT). Why? Because we’re loved by a great and unchanging God!

In times of trouble, we need to remember God’s constant provision. Perhaps we might recall the words of the great hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”: “There is no shadow of turning with thee; / thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not; / as thou hast been thou forever wilt be.” Yes, our God has left His permanent footprint on our world. He will always be there for us. Great is His faithfulness.

너희 이웃을 사랑하라

그것은 청년부 때의 재미있는 게임에 지나지 않았지만, 거기에는 이웃을 바꾸려 하지 말고 지금의 이웃을 사랑하기를 배우라는 교훈이 담겨 있었습니다. 모든 사람이 큰 원을 만들어 앉고 가운데에 한 사람이 서 있습니다. 서 있는 사람은 앉은 사람 중 한 사람을 지목하여 이렇게 묻습니다. “당신은 옆 사람을 사랑합니까?” 지목받은 사람은 ‘예’ 또는 ‘아니오’로만 대답할 수 있습니다. 그렇게 해서 옆에 앉은 사람을 바꿀지 말지를 결정합니다.

우리도 실제 현실에서 “이웃”을 선택할 수 있기를 바라지 않습니까? 특히 어울리기 힘든 동료나 아주 이상한 시간에 잔디를 깎는 이웃이 있을 경우 더욱 그렇습니다. 하지만 우리는 대체로 어려운 이웃과 함께 사는 법을 배워야 합니다.

이스라엘 백성들이 약속의 땅으로 이주할 때 하나님은 그들에게 어떻게 하나님께 속한 백성으로 살 수 있는지에 관한 중요한 가르침들을 주셨습니다. 그 중에는 “네 이웃 사랑하기를 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라”(레위기 19:18)는 가르침도 있었습니다. 거기에는 험담이나 소문을 퍼뜨리지 말고, 이웃을 이용해 나의 이익을 취하지 않으며, 잘못한 사람들이 있으면 직접 대하여 타일러야 한다는 내용이 포함되어 있습니다(9-18절).

우리는 모든 사람을 사랑하기는 어렵지만, 예수님께서 우리 안에서 우리를 통해 역사하시는 사랑의 방식으로 다른 사람들을 대하는 것은 가능합니다. 우리가 하나님의 백성으로 살고자 할 때 하나님은 그렇게 할 수 있도록 필요한 지혜와 능력을 공급해주실 것입니다.

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR

It was just a fun game at youth group, but it held a lesson for us: rather than switching neighbors, learn to love the ones you have. Everyone is seated in a large circle, except for one person who stands in the middle of the circle. The standing person asks someone sitting down, “Do you love your neighbor?” The seated person can answer the question in two ways: yes or no. He gets to decide if he would like to swap his neighbor with someone else.

Don’t we wish we could choose our “neighbors” in real life too? Especially when we have a colleague whom we can’t get along with or a next-door neighbor who loves to mow the lawn at odd hours. More often than not, however, we have to learn to live with our difficult neighbors.

When the Israelites moved into the promised land, God gave them important instructions on how to live as people who belonged to Him. They’re told to “love your neighbor as yourself” (LEVITICUS 19:18), which includes not spreading gossip or rumors, not taking advantage of our neighbors, and confronting people directly if we have something against them (VV. 9–18).

While it’s difficult to love everyone, it’s possible to treat others in loving ways as Jesus works in and through us. God will supply the wisdom and ability to do so as we seek to live out our identity as His people.

북미 대륙의 초원 지역인 이곳은 옛날에는 버팔로 무리가 떼를 지어 돌아다니던 곳이었습니다. 평원의 인디언들은 정착민들이 가축과 농작물을 가지고 옮겨오기 전까지 그곳에서 들소 떼를 따라 이동하면서 살았습니다. 훗날 제2차 세계 대전 중 진주만 공습 후 이곳에 화학 제조 공장이 들어섰으며, 그후 냉전 시대의 무기를 해체하는 장소로 쓰였습니다. 그러다가 어느 날 그곳에서 대머리 독수리의 보금자리가 발견되고 나서, 곧 콜로라도의 수도 덴버의 가장자리에 있는 15,000에이커에 달하는 초원과 습지, 삼림 서식지가 국립 로키산맥 군수창 야생 동물 보호구역으로 지정되었습니다. 그곳은 떼를 지어 다니는 버팔로는 물론, 검은 발 족제비, 가시 올빼미, 대머리 독수리 등, 300종 이상의 야생 동물들이 안전하게 보호받는 서식지이며, 현재 미국에서 대도시에 근접한 가장 큰 보호구역 중의 하나입니다.

시편 기자는 “하나님은 우리의 피난처”(62:8)라고 말합니다. 이 지구 상의 그 어떤 보호구역보다 훨씬 더 크신 하나님은 우리의 진정한 성소이시며, “우리가 그를 힘입어 살며 기동하며 존재하는”(사도행전 17:28) 안전하게 보호받을 수 있는 처소입니다. 하나님은 우리가 “항상” 신뢰할 수 있는 피난처이시며(시편 62:8), 우리가 마음을 쏟아내며 담대히 마음껏 기도할 수 있는 보호처가 되십니다.

하나님은 우리의 피난처이십니다. 태초에도 그러셨고, 지금도 그러하시며, 앞으로도 계속 우리의 피난처가 되실 것입니다.

OUR REFUGE

A place where the buffalo roamed in North America. That’s truly what it was in the beginning. The Plains Indians followed bison there until settlers moved in with herds and crops. The land was later used as a chemical manufacturing site after Pearl Harbor during World War II, then even later for Cold War weapon demilitarization. But then one day a roost of bald eagles was discovered there, and soon the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge was born—a fifteen-thousand-acre expanse of prairie, wetland, and woodland habitat on the edges of the metropolis of Denver, Colorado. It’s now one of the largest urban refuges, or sanctuaries, in the country—a safe, protected home for more than three hundred species of animals, from black-footed ferrets to burrowing owls to bald eagles, and you guessed it: roaming buffalo.

The psalmist tells us that “God is our refuge” (62:8). Far greater than any earthly place of refuge, God is our true sanctuary, a safe, protected presence in whom “we live and move and have our being” (ACTS 17:28). He’s our refuge in whom we can place our trust “at all times” (PSALM 62:8). And He’s our sanctuary where we can boldly bring all our prayers, pouring out our hearts.

God is our refuge. That’s who He was in the beginning, who He is now, and who He always will be.

능력의 근원에 연결됨

폭풍우로 인해 집에 전기가 들어오지 않는다는 것(우리 동네에서 흔히 일어나는 불편한 일)을 알면서도 방에 들어서며 본능적으로 스위치를 올렸습니다. 물론 불은 켜지지 않았고 그대로 어둠속에 있어야 했습니다.

전기가 끊어진 것을 알면서도 빛을 기대했던 그 경험은 한 가지 영적 진리를 생생하게 떠올려 주었습니다. 그것은 우리가 성령에 의지하지 않으면서도 너무 자주 그 능력을 기대한다는 것입니다.

바울은 데살로니가전서에서 하나님께서 복음이 “말로만 아니라 능력과 성령과 큰 확신으로”(1:5, 현대인의 성경) 전해지게 하신 것을 기록했습니다. 그래서 우리 성도들은 하나님의 용서를 받게 되면 삶에서 성령의 능력을 바로 누릴 수 있습니다. 그 능력은 우리 안에 사랑과 희락, 화평, 오래 참음과 같은 성품을 키워주고(갈라디아서 5:22-23), 가르치고 돕고 인도하는 것 등, 교회를 섬기는 은사들로 우리를 강하게 해줍니다(고린도전서 12:28).

바울은 독자들에게 “성령을 소멸”(데살로니가전서 5:19)할 수 있다고 경고합니다. 우리는 하나님의 임재를 무시하거나 그분의 책망을 거부함으로써 성령의 능력을 제한하고 있는지도 모릅니다(요한복음 16:8). 그러나 우리는 하나님과 단절된 채 살 필요가 없습니다. 하나님의 능력은 그분의 자녀들에게 언제나 열려 있기 때문입니다.

CONNECTED TO THE POWER SOURCE

Despite knowing that the electricity wasn’t working in our house after a strong storm (an inconveniently common occurrence in our neighborhood), I instinctively flipped on the light switch when I entered the room. Of course, nothing happened. I was still enveloped in darkness.

That experience—expecting light even when I knew the connection to the power source was broken—vividly reminded me of a spiritual truth. Too often we expect power even as we fail to rely on the Spirit.

In 1 Thessalonians, Paul wrote of the way God caused the gospel message to come “not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction” (1:5). And when we accept God’s forgiveness, believers too have immediate access to the power of His Spirit in our lives. That power cultivates in us characteristics such as love, joy, peace, and patience (GALATIANS 5:22–23) and it empowers us with gifts to serve the church, including teaching, helping, and guiding (1 CORINTHIANS 12:28).

Paul warned his readers that it’s possible to “quench the spirit” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:19). We might restrict the power of the Spirit by ignoring God’s presence or rejecting His conviction (JOHN 16:8). But we don’t have to live disconnected from Him. God’s power is always available to His children.

마지막 당부

존퍼킨스는 죽음을 앞두고 사람들에게 이런 말을 남겼습니다. 인종간의 화합을 주창해온 그는 “회개만이 하나님께로 돌아가는 유일한 길입니다. 회개하지 않으면 우리는 모두 망합니다.”라고 말했습니다. 이 메시지는 예수님과 다른 성경 속 많은 인물들의 말씀과 같습니다. 예수님은 “너희도 만일 회개하지 아니하면 다 이와 같이 망하리라”(누가복음13:3)고 말씀하셨습니다. 베드로 사도는 “그러므로 너희가 회개하고 돌이켜 너희 죄 없이 함을 받으라”(사도행전 3:19)고 말했습니다.

성경에는 이보다 더 오래 전에 자기 민족이 하나님께 돌아가기를 바라던 한 사람의 이야기가 있습니다. 선지자요 제사장이요 사사였던 사무엘은 “온 이스라엘”(사무엘상 12:1)을 향한 마지막 설교에서 “두려워하지 말라 너희가... 악을 행하였으나 여호와를 따르는 데에서 돌아서지 말고 오직 너희의 마음을
다하여 여호와를 섬기라”(20절)고 말했습니다. 이는 악에서 떠나 하나님을 전심으로 따르라는 회개의 메시지였습니다.

우리는 모두 죄를 짓고 하나님의 기준에 맞지 않게 살고 있습니다. 그러므로 우리는 회개, 곧 악을 떠나 우리를 용서하시고 그분을 따르도록 힘주시는 예수님께로 돌아가야 합니다. 하나님께서 우리를 그분의 영광을 위해 쓰임 받는 사람으로 변화시키기 위해 회개의 능력을 사용하시는 것을 알았던 두 사람, 존 퍼킨스와 사무엘의 말에 귀를 기울이십시오.

PARTING WORDS

As he neared the end of his life, John M. Perkins had a message for the people he would leave behind. Perkins, known for advocating racial reconciliation, said, “Repentance is the only way back to God. Unless you repent, you will all perish.”

These words mirror the language of Jesus and many other people in the Bible. Christ said, “Unless you repent, you too will all perish” (LUKE 13:3). The apostle Peter said, “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out” (ACTS 3:19).

Much earlier in Scripture, we read the words of yet another person who desired that his people would turn to God. In his farewell address “to all Israel” (1 SAMUEL 12:1), the prophet, priest, and judge Samuel said, “Do not be afraid. You have done . . . evil; yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart” (V. 20). This was his message of repentance—to turn from evil and follow God wholeheartedly.

We all sin and miss the mark of His standard. So we need to repent, which means to turn away from sin and turn to Jesus, who forgives us and empowers us to follow Him. Let’s heed the words of two men, John Perkins and Samuel, who recognized how God can use the power of repentance to change us into people He can use for His honor. - DAVE BRANON

예상치 못한 곳에서 만난 복음

최근에 나는 영화나 TV에서 셀 수 없이 많이 보았던 곳에 가게 되었습니다. 바로 캘리포니아에 있는 할리우드입니다. 내가 묵고 있던 호텔 창문으로 바라보니 바로 거기 로스앤젤레스의 산기슭에 거대한 하얀 글자들이 그 유명한 언덕을 가로지르며 당당하게 세워져 있었습니다.

바로 그때 다른 것이 내 눈에 들어왔습니다. 그 왼쪽 아래에 분명하게 십자가가 있었습니다. 영화에서는 ‘그것’을 본 적이 없었습니다. 그리고 내가 호텔 방을 나오자 마자 그 지역 교회의 몇몇 학생들이 내게 예수님을 전하기 시작했습니다.

우리는 때로 할리우드를 하나님 나라와는 정반대되는 세속의 중심으로만 생각하기도 합니다. 그러나 그리스도는 분명히 거기서도 역사하고 계셨고, 예기치 않은 주님의 존재로 나는 깜짝 놀랐습니다.

바리새인들은 예수님이 다니시는 장소에 대해 계속 놀라워했습니다. 예수님은 그들이 기대했던 사람들과 시간을 보내지 않으셨습니다. 그 대신 예수님은 실제로 “부정한” 삶을 산다고 비난받던 “세리와 죄인들”(15절)과 시간을 보냈다고 마가복음 2:13-17은 말합니다. 그렇습니다. 예수님은 그를 가장 필요로 하는 사람들이 있는 곳에 계셨습니다(16-17절).

2천년이 더 지난 지금도 예수님은 예상 밖의 장소에서, 가장 예기치 못한 사람들 사이에서 소망과 구원의 말씀을 계속 심고 계십니다. 그리고 주님은 그 사역에 동참하도록 우리를 부르시고 준비시키셨습니다.

THE GOSPEL IN UNEXPECTED PLACES

Recently, I found myself someplace I’d seen in movies and on TV more times than I could count: Hollywood, California. There, in the foothills of Los Angeles, those enormous white letters marched proudly across that famous hillside as I viewed them from my hotel window.

Then I noticed something else: down to the left was a prominent cross. I’d never seen that in a movie. And the moment I left my hotel room, some students from a local church began to share Jesus with me.

We might sometimes think of Hollywood as only the epicenter of worldliness, in utter contrast with God’s kingdom. Yet clearly Christ was at work there, catching me by surprise with His presence.

The Pharisees were consistently surprised by where Jesus turned up. He didn’t hang out with the people they expected. Instead, Mark 2:13–17 tells us He spent time with “tax collectors and sinners” (V. 15), people whose lives practically screamed, “Unclean!” Yet there Jesus was, among those who needed Him most (VV. 16–17).

More than two thousand years later, Jesus continues to plant His message of hope and salvation in unexpected places, among the most unexpected of people. And He’s called and equipped us to be a part of that mission. - ADAM R. HOLZ
