사랑을 위하여

마라톤을 뛰는 것은 육체적으로나 정신적으로 자신을 앞으로 계속 미는 것과 같습니다. 그런데 한 고등학생 육상 선수는 크로스컨트리 경기에 참가하여 자신이 아닌 다른 사람을 계속 밀고 있었습니다. 훈련 때나 경기 때마다 열네 살 난 수잔 버그먼은 휠체어에 앉은 오빠 제프리를 밀어줍니다. 제프리는 생후 22개월에 심장마비가 와서 심각한 뇌 손상으로 뇌성 마비를 앓게 되었습니다. 그래서 지금 수잔은 자신의 개인적인 달리기 목표를 뒤로한 채 제프리와 함께 경기에 참가합니다. 이 얼마나 대단한 사랑과 희생인지요!

사랑과 희생을 마음에 간직하고 있던 바울 사도는 독자들에게 “서로 우애하라”(로마서 12:10)고 권면했습니다. 그는 로마의 신자들이 질투와 분노, 날카로운 의견 충돌로 서로 다투는 것을 알고 있었습니다(18절). 그래서 그들에게 거룩한 사랑으로 마음을 다스리라고 권면했습니다. 그리스도의 사랑에 뿌리를 둔 사랑은 다른 사람이 얻을 수 있는 최고의 유익을 위해 싸우게 해줍니다. 또한 이 사랑은 진실되며, 아낌없이 나눌 수 있게 해줍니다 (13절). 이런 식으로 사랑하는 사람들은 자신보다 다른 사람들이 더 높임을 받도록 하는 일에 열심을 냅니다(16절).

예수님을 믿는 우리는 사랑의 경주를 하며 동시에 다른 사람들도 그 경주를 함께 마칠 수 있도록 도와줘야 합니다. 그렇게 하는 것이 힘들 수도 있겠지만, 그것은 주님께 영광을 돌리는 일입니다. 그러므로 사랑을 이루기 위하여, 다른 사람들을 사랑하고 섬길 수 있는 힘을 주시도록 주님께 의지하시기를 바랍니다.

FOR LOVE’S SAKE

Running a marathon is about pushing yourself, physically and mentally. For one high school runner, however, competing in a cross-country race is all about pushing someone else. In every practice and meet, fourteen-year-old Susan Bergeman pushes older brother, Jeffrey, in his wheelchair. When Jeffrey was twenty-two months old, he went into cardiac arrest—leaving him with severe brain damage and cerebral palsy. Today, Susan sacrifices personal running goals so Jeffrey might compete with her. What love and sacrifice!

The apostle Paul had love and sacrifice in mind when he encouraged his readers to be “devoted to one another” (ROMANS 12:10). He knew that the believers in Rome were struggling with jealousy, anger, and sharp disagreements (V. 18). So, he encouraged them to let divine love rule their hearts. This kind of love, rooted in Christ’s love, would fight for the highest possible good of others. It would be sincere, and it would lead to generous sharing (V. 13). Those who love this way are eager to consider others more worthy of honor than themselves (V. 16).

As believers in Jesus, we’re running a race of love while helping others finish the race too. Though it can be difficult, it brings honor to Jesus. So, for love’s sake, let’s rely on Him to empower us to love and serve others.

내 운전이 어떤가요?

“야!” 수리 전문 트럭이 내 앞에 끼어들자 나는 소리 질렀습니다. 그때 그 트럭에 쓰인 “내 운전이 어떤가요?”라는 문구와 전화번호가 눈에 들어왔습니다. 나는 전화기를 들어 전화를 걸었습니다. 그러고는 전화를 받고 전화한 이유를 묻는 여자에게 마구 짜증을 쏟아 냈습니다. 그 여인은 트럭의 번호를 받아 적더니 피곤한 듯이 말했습니다. “다음에 운전 잘하는 사람을 만나면 꼭 알려주세요.”

아차. 피곤한 그녀의 말을 듣자 의기양양하던 나의 도덕적 우월감이 순식간에 무너져 내리고 당혹감이 밀려왔습니다. “정의롭게” 살고자 하는 열망 때문에 분노 가득한 내 목소리가 힘든 일 중에 있는 그 여인에게 어떤 영향을 미칠지 미처 생각하지 못한 것입니다. 그 순간 나는 신앙과 삶의 결실과의 단절을 경험하고 참담한 기분이 들었습니다.

야고보서는 우리의 행동과 신념 사이의 괴리에 주목하면서 야고보서 1:19-20에서 이렇게 말하고 있습니다. “내 사랑하는 형제들아 너희가 알지니 사람마다 듣기를 속히 하고 말하기는 더디 하며 성내기도 더디 하라 사람이 성내는 것이 하나님의 의를 이루지 못함이라.” 그 뒤에 그는 이렇게 덧붙입니다. “너희는 말씀을 행하는 자가 되고 듣기만 하여 자신을 속이는 자가 되지 말라”(22절).

우리 중 어느 누구도 완전하지 않습니다. 때때로 우리 삶의 “운전” 에 도움이 필요합니다. 부족함을 인정하는 고백으로 시작하여 하나님께서 우리 성격의 모난 부분들을 계속 다듬어 주실 것을 믿으며 하나님께 도움을 구해야 합니다.

HOW’S MY DRIVING?

“ARRRGH!” I yelled as the repair truck cut in front of me. That’s when I saw the message: “How’s My Driving?” And a phone number. I picked up my phone and dialed. A woman asked me why I was calling, and I vented my frustration. She took down the truck’s number. Then she said, wearily, “You know, you can always call to report someone who’s driving nicely.”

Ouch. Her tired words instantly punctured my smug selfrighteousness. Embarrassment flooded me. In my zeal for “justice,” I hadn’t paused to consider how my rage-filled tone could affect this woman in her difficult job. The disconnect between my faith and my fruitfulness—in that moment—was devastating.

The gap between our actions and our convictions is what the book of James focuses on. In James 1:19–20, we read, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” Later, he adds, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says” (V. 22).

None of us is perfect. Sometimes our “driving” in life needs help, the kind that starts with confession and asks for God’s help— trusting Him to keep filing the rough edges of our character.

하나님은 보시고 이해하시고 돌보신다

만성 통증과 피로를 안고 살다 보면, 때로는 집에 갇혀 지내게 되어 혼자라는 느낌이 들 때가 있습니다. 나는 자주 나 자신이 하나님과 다른 사람들 눈에 띄지 않는다고 느꼈습니다. 이른 아침 도우미견과 함께 산책 겸 기도의 시간을 갖고 있을 때 이런 감정들 때문에 힘들었습니다. 그때 멀리서 열기구가 보였습니다. 열기구에 탄 사람들은 조용한 우리 동네를 새처럼 내려다볼 수는 있겠지만 나를 찾아내지는 못했을 것입니다. 이웃집들을 지나 계속 걸어갈 때 한숨이 나왔습니다. 저 닫힌 문 뒤로 얼마나 많은 사람들이 자신이 보이지 않고 보잘것없다고 느끼고 있을까요? 산책을 마치고 나는 하나님께 이웃들에게 내가 그들을 지켜보며 관심을 갖고 있다는 것과, 하나님도 그렇게 하신다는 것을 알릴 기회를 달라고 기도했습니다.

하나님은 별들의 수를 정확히 정하시고 말씀으로 별들을 창조하셨습니다. 그리고 각각의 별들에 이름을 붙여주셨습니다(시편 147:4, 새번역). 이것은 아주 작은 일에도 주의를 기울이시는 하나님의 친밀한 행동을 보여줍니다. 하나님의 힘, 곧 통찰력과 분별력과 지식은 과거와 현재, 미래에도 “무궁”합니다(5절).

즐거움과 배꼽 잡는 웃음의 어느 한순간도 놓치지 않으시는 하나님은 또한 절망에 찬 부르짖음을 다 들으시고 소리 없는 눈물도 다 보고 계십니다. 하나님은 우리가 걸려 넘어질 때, 그리고 승리로 우뚝 설 때 보고 계시며, 우리의

GOD SEES, UNDERSTANDS, AND CARES

Sometimes, living with chronic pain and fatigue leads to being isolated at home and feeling alone. I’ve often felt unseen by God and others. During an early morning prayer-walk with my service dog, I struggled with these feelings. I noticed a hot-air balloon in the distance. The people in its basket could enjoy a bird’s-eye view of our quiet neighborhood, but they couldn’t really see me. As I continued walking past my neighbors’ houses, I sighed. How many people behind those closed doors feel unseen and insignificant? As I finished my walk, I asked God to give me opportunities to let my neighbors know that I see them and care for them, and so does He.

God determined the exact number of stars that He spoke into existence. He identified each star with a name (PSALM 147:4), an intimate act that demonstrates His attention to the smallest details. His strength—insight, discernment, and knowledge—have “no limit” in the past, present, or future (V. 5).

God hears each desperate cry and sees each silent tear as clearly as He notices each sigh of contentment and belly laugh. He sees when we’re stumbling and when we’re standing in triumph. He understands our deepest fears, our innermost thoughts, and our wildest dreams. He knows where we’ve been and where we’re going. As God helps us see, hear, and love our neighbors, we can trust Him to see, understand, and care for us.

도난당한 신상

나뭇조각으로 만든 집안 신을 도난당한 에큐와라는 여인이 도난 사실을 당국에 신고했습니다. 당국은 신상을 찾은 것 같아 확인차 그 여인을 불렀습니다. “이것이 당신의 신입니까?” 여인은 슬퍼하며 대답했습니다. “아니요, 저의 신은 이보다 훨씬 크고 더 아름답습니다.”

사람들은 자신들이 만든 신상이 그들을 지켜줄 것을 바라며 신의 개념에 부합하는 모양을 만들려고 오랫동안 노력해왔습니다. 아마도 야곱의 아내 라헬이 라반으로부터 도망치며 “아버지의 집안 우상들을 훔친” 것도 같은 이유일 것입니다(창세기 31:19). 하지만 야곱의 장막에 우상들이 숨겨져 있는데도 하나님은 야곱을 향한 손을 거두지 않으셨습니다(34절).

그 길을 계속 가다가 나중에 야곱은 “어떤 사람”과 밤새도록 씨름 합니다(32:24). 야곱은 그 어떤 사람이 평범한 사람이 아니라는 것을 분명히 알고 있었습니다. 날이 샐 때 야곱이 “당신이 내게 축복하지 아니하면 가게 하지 아니하겠나이다”(26절)라고 주장한 것을 보면 알 수 있습니다. 그 사람은 야곱에게 이스라엘(“하나님과 겨룬다”)이라는 새 이름을 주고 그를 축복했습니다(28-29절). 야곱은 “내가 하나님과 대면하여 보았으나 내 생명이 보전되었다”(30절)고 하면서 그곳 이름을 브니엘(“하나님의 얼굴”) 이라고 불렀습니다.

유일한 참 신이신 이 하나님은 에큐와가 상상할 수 있었던 그 어떤 것보다 무한히 더 크고 더 아름답습니다. 하나님은 조각으로 새겨질 수도, 도난당할 수도, 숨겨질 수도 없는 분입니다. 그럼에도 야곱이 그날 밤에 깨달은 것처럼 우리는 하나님께 다가갈 수 있습니다! 예수님은 제자들에게 이 하나님을 “하늘에 계신 우리 아버지”(마태복음 6:9)라고 부르라고 가르치셨습니다.

STOLEN GODS

A carved wooden figure—a household god—had been stolen from a woman named Ekuwa, so she reported it to the authorities. Believing they had found the idol, law enforcement officials invited her to identify it. “Is this your god?” they asked. She said sadly, “No, my god is much larger and more beautiful than that.”

People have long tried to give shape to their concept of deity, hoping for a handmade god to protect them. Perhaps that’s why Jacob’s wife Rachel “stole her father’s household gods” as they fled from Laban (GENESIS 31:19). But God had His hand on Jacob, despite the idols hidden in his camp (V. 34).

Later, on that same journey, Jacob wrestled all night with “a man” (32:24). He must have understood this opponent was no mere human, because at daybreak Jacob insisted, “I will not let you go unless you bless me” (V. 26). The man renamed him Israel (“God fights”) and then blessed him (VV. 28–29). Jacob called the spot Peniel (“face of God”), “because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared” (V. 30).

This God—the one true God—is infinitely larger and more beautiful than anything Ekuwa could have ever imagined. He can’t be carved, stolen, or hidden. Yet, as Jacob learned that night, we can approach Him! Jesus taught His disciples to call this God “our Father in heaven” (MATTHEW 6:9).

우리 이름을 아시는 하나님

입양으로 헤어진 두 형제가 거의 20년이 지나서 유전자 검사의 도움으로 재회하게 되었습니다. 키에론이 그의 형제라고 생각한 빈센트에게 문자를 보냈을 때, 빈센트는 ‘이 낯선 사람은 누구지?’라고 생각했습니다. 키에론이 빈센트에게 태어났을 때의 이름을 묻자 그가 즉시 “ 타일러”라고 대답했습니다. 그러자 키에론은 자신들이 형제라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이름으로 알아본 것입니다!

부활절 이야기에서 이름이 얼마나 중요한 역할을 하는지 생각해 보십시오. 알려진 것처럼 막달라 마리아가 예수님 무덤에 갔을 때 예수님의 시신이 사라진 것을 보고 흐느껴 울고 있었습니다. 예수님은 “여자여 어찌하여 우느냐” (요한복음20:15)고 물으셨습니다. 그러나 마리아는 예수님이 “마리아야”(16절) 하고 이름을 부르시기 전까지 주님을 알아보지 못했습니다.

마리아는 예수님이 자신의 이름을 부르는 것을 듣고 “히브리 말로 랍오니 (선생님이란 뜻)”라고 외쳤습니다(16절). 마리아의 반응은 예수님을 믿는 자들이 부활절 아침에 느끼는 기쁨을 잘 표현합니다. 그 기쁨은 부활하신 예수님이 모든 사람을 위해 사망을 이기신 것과 우리 각 사람이 그분의 자녀임을 아는 기쁨입니다. 예수님이 마리아에게 “내가 내 아버지 곧 너희 아버지, 내 하나님 곧 너의 하나님께로 올라간다”(17절)고 말씀하셨던 것처럼 말입니다.

이름으로 연결되어 조지아에서 다시 만난 두 형제는 “관계를 한층 더” 발전시키기로 다짐했습니다. 부활절에 우리는 예수님을 찬양합니다. 이는 예수님이 그의 자녀로 삼으신 자들을 위해 희생적인 사랑으로 이미 극한의 과정을 거치고 부활하셨기 때문입니다. 주님은 진실로 당신과 나를 위해 살아나셨습니다!

KNOWN BY GOD

After two brothers were separated by adoption, a DNA test helped to reunite them almost twenty years later. When Kieron texted Vincent, the man he believed was his brother, Vincent thought, Who is this stranger? When Kieron asked him what name he’d been given at birth, he immediately answered, “Tyler.” Then he knew they were brothers. He was recognized by his name!

Consider how a name plays a key role in the Easter story. As it unfolds, Mary Magdalene comes to Christ’s tomb, and she weeps when she finds His body missing. “Woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asks (JOHN 20:15). She didn’t recognize Him, however, until He spoke her name: “Mary” (V. 16).

Hearing Him say it, she “cried out in Aramaic, ‘Rabboni!’ (Which means ‘Teacher’)” (V. 16). Her reaction expresses the joy believers in Jesus feel on Easter morning, recognizing that our risen Christ conquered death for all, knowing each of us as His children. As He told Mary, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God” (V. 17).

In Georgia, two reunited brothers bonded by name, vowed to take “this relationship to the next level.” On Easter, we praise Jesus for already taking the utmost step to rise in sacrificial love for those He knows as His own. For you and me, indeed, He’s alive!

진실을 찾는 자들

한 여인이 나에게 자신의 교회가 의견이 달라 갈라졌다는 이야기를 했습니다. “어떤 의견이 달랐나요?”라고 묻자, 그녀는 “지구가 평평한지 아닌지”에 대한 것이었다고 대답했습니다. 몇 달 뒤, 한 음식점의 뒷방에서 아이들이 학대받고 있는 것으로 추측하여 그 아이들을 구하려고 무기를 가지고 난입한 한 기독교인에 대한 이야기가 뉴스에 나왔습니다. 하지만 그 음식점에 뒷방은 없었으며, 그 남자는 체포되었습니다. 이 두 경우 모두, 관련된 사람들이 인터넷에서 읽은 거짓 음모론에 현혹되어 행동한 것이었습니다.

예수님을 믿는 사람들은 좋은 시민이 되어야 합니다(로마서 13:1-7). 그리고 좋은 시민은 잘못된 정보를 퍼뜨리지 않습니다. 누가가 살던 때에도 예수님에 관한 많은 이야기가 돌았는데(누가복음 1:1), 그중 사실과 다른 이야기들도 있었습니다. 누가는 그가 들은 것들을 모두 전하기보다는 마치 탐사 전문 기자처럼 목격자들과 대화하고(2절), “근원부터 자세히 미루어” 살핀 후에(3절), 검증 안 된 주장은 배제하고 목격자들로부터 들은 이름과 말, 그리고 역사적인 사실들을 복음서에 기록했습니다.

우리도 이같이 할 수 있습니다. 거짓된 정보는 교회를 분열시키고 사람들을 위태롭게 하므로 우리가 사실을 확인하는 것이 곧 이웃 사랑을 실천하는 것입니다(10:27). 혹 깜짝 놀랄 만한 이야기가 들리면 우리는 자격 있고 신뢰할 만한 전문가에게 그것이 사실인지를 확인함으로써 거짓을 퍼뜨리는 자가 아니라 진실을 찾는 자가 될 수 있습니다. 그런 행동은 우리가 전하는 복음에 신뢰를 더해줍니다. 무엇보다도 우리는 진실로 가득 찬 주님을 경배하는 사람들입니다(요한복음 1:14).

TRUTH SEEKERS

A woman once told me about a disagreement that was tearing her church apart. “What’s the disagreement about?” I asked. “Whether the earth is flat,” she said. A few months later, news broke of a Christian man who’d burst into a restaurant, armed, to rescue children supposedly being abused in its back room. There was no back room, and the man was arrested. In both cases, the people involved were acting on conspiracy theories they’d read on the internet.

Believers in Jesus are called to be good citizens (ROMANS 13:1–7), and good citizens don’t spread misinformation. In Luke’s day, numerous stories circulated about Jesus (LUKE 1:1), some of them were inaccurate. Instead of passing on everything he heard, Luke essentially became an investigative journalist, talking to eyewitnesses (V. 2), researching “everything from the beginning” (V. 3), and writing his findings into a gospel that contains names, quotes, and historical facts based on people with firsthand knowledge, not unverified claims.

We can do the same. Since false information can split churches and put lives at risk, checking facts is an act of loving our neighbor (10:27). When a sensational story comes our way, we can verify its
claims with qualified, accountable experts, being truth seekers— not error spreaders. Such an act brings credibility to the gospel. After all, we worship the One who’s full of truth (JOHN 1:14).

내적 치유를 위한 사냥

카슨은 사냥과 낚시를 하고 비포장도로에서 오토바이를 타며 스케이트보드를 즐기느라 항상 바빴습니다. 그는 모든 야외활동을 즐겼습니다. 그런데 오토바이 사고로 그는 하반신 마비가 되고 말았습니다. 그는 곧 우울증에 빠졌고, 미래에 대한 희망을 잃어버렸습니다. 그러던 어느 날 친구 몇 명이 그를 다시 사냥터로 데리고 갔습니다. 카슨은 한참 동안 자신의 상처를 잊고 주변의 아름다운 경치를 즐겼습니다. 그 경험으로 내적 치유와 삶의 새로운 목적을 얻은 그는 다른 사람들도 같은 경험을 할 수 있도록 ‘치유를 위한 사냥’(Hunt 2 Heal)이라는 비영리단체를 세웠습니다. 그는 자신의 사고가 “위장된 축복이며 이제 나는 항상 바라던 대로 돌려주는 삶을 살 수 있게 되었습니다. 그래서 행복합니다”라고 말합니다. 그러면서 심각한 신체장애를 가진 사람들과 그 보호자들이 치유받을 수 있는 자리를 제공하는 일에 신이 나 있습니다.

이사야 선지자는 장차 오실 주님이 상처 입은 자들을 치유하실 것을 예언했습니다(이사야 61장). 주님은 “마음이 상한 자를 고치며” “모든 슬픈 자를 위로”하실 것입니다(1-2절). 예수님은 그의 고향 회당에서 성경을 읽은 후, “이 글이 오늘 너희 귀에 응하였느니라”(누가복음 4:21)고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 우리를 구원하고 온전케 하기 위하여 오셨습니다.

당신에게 내적 치유가 필요합니까? 예수님께로 돌아오면 주님이 “슬픔을 대신하며 찬송의 옷으로” 입혀 주실 것입니다(이사야 61:3).

HUNT FOR INNER HEALING

Always a busy guy, Carson hunted, fished, rode dirt bikes, and skateboarded. He loved everything outdoors. But he was in a motorcycle accident and became paralyzed from the chest down. Soon depression sank in, and he didn’t see much of a future. Then one day some of his buddies got him to go hunting again. For a time he forgot about his injury as he enjoyed the beauty around him. This experience brought him inner healing and inspired a new purpose for his life—to provide the same experience for others like him through a nonprofit organization, Hunt 2 Heal. He says his accident was “a blessing in disguise. . . . Now I’m able to give back, which I’ve always wanted to do. I’m happy.” He’s excited about providing a place for those with severe mobility disabilities and their caregivers to find healing.

The prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of One who would bring healing for brokenness (ISAIAH 61). He would “bind up the brokenhearted” and “comfort all who mourn” (VV. 1–2). After Jesus read this Scripture in His hometown synagogue, He said, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (LUKE 4:21). Jesus came to save us and make us whole.

Are you in need of inner healing? Turn to Jesus and He’ll give you “a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair” (ISAIAH 61:3).

감사하는 마음

핸슬 파치먼트는 곤경에 처했습니다. 도쿄 올림픽에서 준결승전에 참가해야 하는데 버스를 잘못 타서 제시간에 경기장에 도착하기 어려운 상황에 놓였기 때문입니다. 다행히 올림픽 자원봉사자 트리야나 스토이코비치를 만나 그녀가 준 택시비로 제시간에 준결승전에 참가하여, 마침내는 110 미터 장애물 경주에서 금메달을 획득할 수 있었습니다. 그는 나중에 스토이코비치를 찾아가 그녀의 친절에 감사를 표했습니다.

누가복음 17장에는 예수님께 돌아와 감사한 고침 받은 사마리아인 나병환자 이야기가 나옵니다(15-16절). 예수님은 어느 한마을에 들어가 열 명의 나병환자를 만났습니다. 예수님에게 고쳐 달라고 간구한 그들은 예수님의 은혜와 능력으로 모두 깨끗함을 받게 되었습니다. 열 명 모두 다 고침을 받아 기뻐했지만 오직 한 사람만이 돌아와 감사를 표현했습니다. 그는 “큰 소리로 하나님께 영광을 돌리며 돌아와 예수의 발 아래에 엎드리어 감사했습니다”(15-16절).

우리는 매일 여러 모습으로 하나님의 축복을 경험합니다. 그것은 오랜 고통 끝에 극적으로 받은 기도 응답이거나, 낯선 사람으로부터 제때에 받은 도움일 수 있습니다. 때로는 좋은 날씨 덕분에 실외 작업을 마칠 수 있는 것과 같이 아주 평범한 하나님의 축복일 수도 있습니다. 예수님께 돌아와 감사한 사마리아인 나병환자처럼 우리를 향한 하나님의 자비에 대해 잊지 않고 감사하도록 합시다.

THANKFUL HEARTS

Hansle Parchment was in a predicament. He caught the bus to the wrong place for his semifinal in the Tokyo Olympics and was left stranded with little hope of getting to the stadium on time. But thankfully he met Trijana Stojkovic, a volunteer helping out at the games. She gave him some money to take a taxi. Parchment made it to the semifinal on time and eventually clinched the gold medal in the 110-meter hurdle. Later, he went back to find Stojkovic and thanked her for her kindness.

In Luke 17, we read of the Samaritan leper who came back to thank Jesus for healing him (VV. 15–16). Jesus had entered a village where He met ten lepers. All of them asked Jesus for healing, and all of them experienced His grace and power. Ten were happy that they’d been healed, but only one returned to express his gratitude. He “came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him” (VV. 15–16).

Every day, we experience God’s blessings in multiple ways. It could be as dramatic as an answered prayer to an extended time of suffering or receiving timely help from a stranger. Sometimes, His blessings can come in ordinary ways too, such as good weather to accomplish an outdoor task. Like the Samaritan leper, let’s remember to thank God for His kindness toward us.

은혜와 변화

아주 끔찍한 범죄를 저지른 남자가 무기징역을 선고받았습니다. 그 후 몇 년 동안 그는 독방에 갇혀 있으면서 정신적, 영적인 치유의 과정을 거치며 마침내 회개하고 예수님과의 관계를 회복했습니다. 최근에는 다른 수감자들과 제한적인 교류도 허락받았습니다. 그리고 하나님의 은혜로, 그의 간증을 통해 몇몇 동료 수감자들이 그리스도를 구주로 영접하고 하나님의 용서를 받았습니다.

지금은 위대한 믿음의 사람으로 인정받지만 모세도 한때 끔찍한 범죄를 저질렀습니다. “한 애굽 사람이 히브리 사람을 치는” 것을 보고, “좌우를” 살피고는 “그 애굽 사람을 죽인” 것입니다(출애굽기 2:11-12). 그 같은 범죄에도 불구하고 은혜의 하나님은 그 부족한 종을 내치지 않으시고, 훗날 모세를 선택하여 그분의 백성을 애굽의 압제에서 해방시키셨습니다(3:10). 로마서 5 장 14절은 “아담으로부터 모세까지 아담의 범죄와 같은 죄를 짓지 아니한 자들까지도 사망이 왕 노릇 하였다”고 말합니다. 그러나 이어진 말씀에서 바울은 우리가 과거에 지은 죄에도 불구하고 “하나님의 은혜”로 변화되어 의롭게 되는 것이 가능하게 되었다고 말합니다(15-16절).

우리는 지은 죄 때문에 하나님의 용서를 받고 하나님의 영광을 위해 사용될 자격이 없다고 생각할지도 모릅니다. 그러나 하나님의 은혜로 우리가 예수님 안에서 변화되고 자유롭게 되어 다른 사람들이 영생을 바라며 변화될 수 있도록 도와줄 수 있게 되었습니다.

GRACE AND CHANGE

The crime was shocking, and the man who committed it was sentenced to life in prison. In the years that followed, the man—in solitary confinement—began a process of mental and spiritual healing. It led to repentance and a restored relationship with Jesus. These days he’s been allowed limited interactions with other inmates. And, by God’s grace, through his witness some fellow prisoners have received Christ as Savior—finding forgiveness in Him.

Moses, though now recognized as a great man of faith, also committed a shocking crime. After he witnessed “an Egyptian beating a Hebrew,” he looked “this way and that” and “killed the Egyptian” (EXODUS 2:11–12). Despite this sin, God in His grace wasn’t done with His imperfect servant. Later, He chose Moses to free His people from their oppression (3:10). In Romans 5:14, we read, “Death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command.” But in the following verses Paul states that “God’s grace” makes it possible for us, regardless of our past sins, to be changed and made right with Him (VV. 15–16).

We might think that what we’ve done disqualifies us from knowing God’s forgiveness and being used for His honor. But because of His grace, in Jesus we can be changed and set free to help others be changed for eternity.

기도하며 하는 수술

아들이 정형외과 수술을 받았을 때 그 수술을 담당한 의사에게 고마웠습니다. 은퇴를 앞두고 있는 그는 같은 문제를 가진 수천 명의 사람을 도와주었다면서 우리를 안심시켰습니다. 그런 경륜이 있음에도 그는 기도하며 이번 수술이 잘 되도록 하나님께 간구했습니다. 그리고 하나님이 그 기도에 응답하셔서 너무나 감사합니다.

경륜 있는 국가 지도자 여호사밧도 위기를 맞았을 때 기도했습니다. 그를 대적해 세 나라가 연합하여 그의 백성을 공격해 왔습니다. 20년 이상 전쟁을 경험해 봤지만 그는 이 상황에서 어떻게 해야 할지 하나님께 물으며 기도했습니다. “[우리가] 이 환난 가운데에서 주께 부르짖은즉 들으시고 구원하시리라 하였나이다”(역대하 20:9). 그는 또 “우리가 대적할 능력이 없고 어떻게 할 줄도 알지 못하옵고 오직 주만 바라보나이다”(12절)라고 하며 하나님의 인도하심을 구했습니다.

위기에 처한 여호사밧이 겸손한 자세로 마음을 열어 하나님이 관여해 주시기를 구하자, 하나님은 그에게 용기를 주시고 그분의 능력으로 개입하여 도와주셨습니다(15-17, 22절). 우리가 어떤 일에 아무리 많은 경험을 가졌어도, 하나님의 도움을 바라는 기도는 하나님에 대한 거룩한 신뢰를 형성해 줍니다. 그런 기도는 하나님께서 우리보다 더 잘 아시고 그분이 궁극적으로 주관하시는 분이심을 다시 깨닫게 해줍니다. 또한 그런 기도는 결과에 상관없이 하나님께서 기쁨으로 우리에게 응답하시고 도와주시는 그런 겸손한 자리로 우리를 이끌어줍니다.

OPERATING WITH PRAYER

When my son needed orthopedic surgery, I was grateful for the doctor who performed the operation. The doctor, who was nearing retirement, assured us he’d helped thousands of people with the same problem. Even so, before the procedure, he prayed and asked God to provide a good outcome. And I’m so grateful He did.

Jehoshaphat, an experienced national leader, prayed too during a crisis. Three nations had united against him, and they were coming to attack his people. Although he had more than two decades
of experience, he decided to ask God what to do. He prayed, “[We] will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us” (2 CHRONICLES 20:9). He also asked for guidance, saying, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (V. 12).

Jehoshaphat’s humble approach to the challenge opened his heart to God’s involvement, which came in the form of encouragement and divine intervention (VV. 15–17, 22). No matter how much experience we have in certain areas, praying for help develops a holy reliance on God. It reminds us that He knows more than we do, and He’s ultimately in control. It puts us in a humble place—a
place where He’s pleased to respond and support us, no matter what the outcome may be.
