우리 기도를 들으시는 하나님 친

친구인 크리스틴과 남편이 그들의 고모와 고모부 집에서 저녁 식사를 하게 되었습니다. 크리스틴의 고모는 최근에 악성 암 진단을 받았습니다. 식사 전에 고모부가 “누구 할 말 있는 사람 없나?”라고 물었습니다. 크리스틴은 고모부의 말이 “누구 기도하고 싶은 사람 없어?”라는 뜻이라는 것을 알고 미소를 지었습니다. 고모부는 예수님을 믿는 사람은 아니었지만, 크리스틴이 그리스도인인 것을 알고 그렇게 기도 부탁을 한 것입니다. 진심으로 크리스틴은 보살피시는 하나님께 감사드리고 고모를 위해 기적을 베풀어 달라고 기도했습니다.

병에 걸린 히스기야 왕은 이사야 선지자가 그에게 죽을 것이라고 말하자 하나님께 하고 싶은 말이 마음에 있었습니다(이사야 38:1). 왕은 “심히 통곡하며” “내가 주 앞에서 진실과 전심으로 행하며 주의 목전에서 선하게 행한 것을 기억하옵소서”(3절)라고 간구하였습니다. 그는 정직하고 필사적인 마음으로 그를 구원해 주시기를 구했습니다. 비록 치유가 우리의 “선함”에 달려 있지 않고 또 하나님이 항상 고쳐 주시는 것은 아니지만, 하나님은 왕의 수명을 15년 늘이기로 하셨습니다(5절). 히스기야는 회복된 후 하나님께 감사하며 찬양하였습니다(16절).

하나님은 위급한 도움이 필요해서든, 아니면 사소하거나 중요한 일에 감사하기 위해서든 우리가 기도의 자리로 나오기를 원하십니다. 하나님은 우리의 기도를 들으시고, 우리의 눈물을 보시며, 그분의 계획에 따라 응답하실 것입니다. 우리가 할 일은 하나님과 함께 “[우리의] 여생을 겸손한 마음으로 살아가는” 것입니다(15절, 현대인의 성경).

GOD HEARS OUR PRAYERS

My friend Christine and her husband sat down to dinner at their aunt and uncle’s house. Her aunt had recently been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. Before anyone started to eat, her uncle asked, “Does anyone have anything to say?” Christine smiled because she knew he meant, “Does anyone want to pray?” He wasn’t a believer in Jesus, but he knew Christine was, so this was his way to invite prayer. Speaking from her heart, she gave thanks to God for His care and requested that He would perform a miracle for her aunt.

King Hezekiah became ill and had something on his heart to say to God after the prophet Isaiah told him he was going to die (ISAIAH 38:1). He “wept bitterly” and pleaded, “Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion” (V. 3). His was an honest, desperate appeal for deliverance. Even though healing isn’t dependent on our “goodness,” and God doesn’t always heal, He chose to extend the king’s life by fifteen years (V. 5). After his recovery, Hezekiah thanked and praised Him (V. 16).

God invites us to pray—whether it’s for an urgent need or to thank Him for something small or significant. He hears our prayers, sees our tears, and will answer according to His plan. Our place is to “walk humbly all [our] years” with Him (V. 15).

앤디 골즈워디의 ‘그랜드래피즈 아치’ 조형물은 마치 여행자들과 함께 길을 걷고 있는 것처럼 길가에 세워져 있습니다. 조각가는 몰타르나 고정핀 없이 36개의 스코틀랜드 사암 블록만으로 18피트(약 5.5미터) 높이의 홀로 서 있는 아치를 만들었습니다. 각기 다른 돌을 깎아 서로 끼워 맞춘 상층의 각진 돌들은 쐐기 모양으로 된 중앙 최상단의 쐐기돌이 누르는 압력에 힘입어 완벽하게 유지되고 있습니다. 모퉁잇돌처럼 쐐기돌도 그 구조물을 하나로 지탱하는 데 필수적입니다.

그 구조물은 예수님이 어떻게 그의 다양한 교회의 “모퉁잇돌”이 되시는지를 상기시켜 줍니다(에베소서 2:20). 유대인이 아닌 모든 이방인들은 “이스라엘 나라 밖의 사람이라 약속의 언약들에 대하여는 외인이요 세상에서 소망이 없고 하나님도 없는 자”(12절)였지만, 예수님이 “둘로 하나를 만드사 원수 된 것 곧 중간에 막힌 담을... 허셨습니다”(14절). 예수님은 “한 새 사람을” 지어 “십자가로 이 둘을 한 몸으로 하나님과 화목하게 하려 하시고”, 그들 모두에게 “한 성령 안에서 아버지께 나아감을 얻게 하려” 하셨습니다(15-16, 18절).

그리스도는 우리가 “성령 안에서 하나님이 거하실 처소가 되기 위하여” (22절) 우리를 교회로 세우십니다. 예수님은 우리 고유한 각 사람을 다듬어 주님과 연결시키시고, 주님을 통해 우리 서로를 연결시키시며 우리와 동행해 주십니다. 교회는 예수님에 의해 연결되어 있습니다.

JOINED BY JESUS

Andy Goldsworthy’s Grand Rapids Arch sits on the side of a road as if striding alongside travelers. The artist created the eighteen foot-tall, free-standing arch with thirty-six blocks of Scottish sandstone without using mortar or pins. The ascending angled stones, each one different and cut to fit together, depend on pressure created by a wedge-shaped keystone—the top center stone—to remain perfectly intact. The keystone is essential to holding the structure together, much like a cornerstone.

The sculpture reminded me of how Jesus serves as “the chief cornerstone” of His diverse church (EPHESIANS 2:20). The gentiles— all non-Jewish people—were once “excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world” (V. 12). Jesus made “the two groups one” and “destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility” (V. 14). He created “one new humanity,” and “in one body [reconciled] both of them to God through the cross,” giving them all “access to the Father by one Spirit” (VV. 15-16, 18).

Christ builds us up as a church “in which God lives by his Spirit” (V. 22). He sculpts each unique person, connects us to Him and to each other through Him, and walks with us. The church is joined by Jesus.

바로 박해가 가져다준 역설입니다.

유럽인 목사 흐리스토 쿨리체프는 악에서 선을 이루는 기적을 체험했습니다. 1980년대에, 설교했다는 이유로 체포되어 투옥된 그는 감옥에서 드러내놓고 예수님의 복음을 전했습니다. 8개월 후에 석방되자 그는 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리는 교회에서 기대할 수 있었던 것보다 더 많은 사역의 열매를 감옥에서 맺었습니다. 우리는 자유로웠을 때보다 감옥에서 하나님을 더 잘 섬겼습니다.”

THE PARADOX OF PERSECUTION

Something unusual happens in ten short verses starting with Acts 7:59. The story turns quickly from Stephen’s horrific death by stoning to other believers in Christ being scattered and “preach[ing] the word,” leading to these amazing words: “There was great joy in that city” (8:8).

That’s the paradox of persecution.

European pastor Hristo Kulichev experienced the miracle of good coming from evil. In the 1980s, he was arrested for preaching and thrown in prison. While there, he spoke openly about the gospel of Jesus. Upon his release eight months later, he said, “We had a more fruitful ministry there than we could have expected in church. God was better served by our presence in prison than if we had been free.”

From persecution to great joy—just like in the early church. When “great persecution broke out” (ACTS 8:1), “those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went” (V. 4). As a result, there was “great joy” in a city in Samaria (V. 8).

When forces in our world stand against the truths and teachings of Scripture—especially the gospel—that’s not the time to give up. God moves in powerful ways when the church faces such difficulties.

Peter said, “Do not be surprised” at such fiery trials (1 PETER 4:12). In such cases you’re “blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you” (V. 14). God has the power to turn persecution into something precious.

성도의 큰 무리

2010년 남아프리카공화국 케이프타운에서 예수님을 믿는 약 4천 명의 사람들이 모였습니다. 전 세계 198개국에서 온 참가자들이 이 회의에 참석했는데, 이 모임은 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 후 2천 년의 기독교 교회 역사상 가장 많은 대표들이 참석한 모임으로 여겨지고 있습니다.

그러나 언젠가는 모든 믿는 자들이 다 함께 할 것이므로 “대표”들만 모이지 않아도 되는 날이 올 것입니다. 요한은 하나님이 보여주신 환상을 이렇게 묘사합니다. “내가 보니 각 나라와 족속과 백성과 방언에서 아무도 능히 셀 수 없는 큰 무리가 나와 흰 옷을 입고 손에 종려 가지를 들고 보좌 앞과 어린 양 앞에 서서 큰 소리로 외쳐 이르되 ‘구원하심이 보좌에 앉으신 우리 하나님과 어린 양에게 있도다’ 하니”(요한계시록 7:9-10).

각 지역 교회들은 영원한 하나님의 나라에 존재하는 다양한 모습을 언제나 보여줄 수 없을지 모릅니다. 우리가 어쩔 수 없는 요인 때문에 그럴 때가 있고, 어떤 때는 문화나 세대, 정치 경제적으로 비슷하다고 생각되는 사람들과 예배하려는 우리의 모습 때문에 그럴 수 있습니다.

그러나 하나님이 그분의 자녀들에게 주신 아름다운 다른 모습을 포용하거나 때론 노력하여 찾아낼 때, 우리는 그 일로 하나님을 영화롭게 합니다. 예수님의 희생을 믿는 사람들이 모두 함께 모여 하나님을 경배할 때, 그 아름다운 다른 모습들은 우리에게 다양한 천국의 모임을 미리 맛볼 수 있게 해줍니다.

A GREAT MULTITUDE

In 2010, nearly four thousand believers in Jesus gathered in Cape Town, South Africa. Participants from 198 countries were represented at the conference—a gathering considered to be the most representative meeting of the Christian church in the two thousand years since Jesus walked the earth.

There will come a day when a gathering needn’t be “representative” because all believers will be together. John, in a vision from God, describes it this way: “I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb . . . and they cried out in a loud voice: ‘Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne’ ” (REVELATION 7:9-10).

Our local churches may not always reflect the diversity that exists in God’s eternal kingdom. Sometimes that’s the result of factors outside our control—other times we may be drawn to worship with those we perceive to be similar to ourselves culturally, generationally, politically, and economically.

But we honor God when we embrace—and even seek out—the beautiful differences He has endowed to His children. They offer a foretaste of that diverse, heavenly gathering when all those who trust in Jesus’ sacrifice will worship Him together.

예수님이 우리를 위해 하신 것

전자제품 회사 사장인 안드레는 판매 실적이 뛰어난 직원들에게 해변 리조트에서 하루 휴가를 갖게 해주었습니다. 그는 일곱 살 난 아들 지미도 데리고 갔습니다. 출발하려고 다들 차에 타는데 신이 난 지미는 아빠의 손을 잡고 있었습니다. “너도 가는 거야? 얼마나 많이 팔았어?” 한 직원이 지미에게 농담하며 물었습니다. “하나도 안 팔았어요! 아빠가 같이 가자고 했어요!” 지미는 아빠를 가리키며 대답했습니다.

지미는 이 여행을 위해 일할 필요가 없었습니다. 아빠가 비용을 지불했기 때문입니다. 예수님을 믿는 우리도 선행을 가지고 천국에 들어가지 않습니다. 우리를 대신한 예수님의 죽음과 부활 때문에 우리는 천국에 들어갑니다. “죄의 삯은 사망”(로마서 6:23)인데, 예수님 자신이 피 흘려 “대가를 지불해” 우리가 그분께 진 빚을 갚아주셨습니다. “우리는 그리스도 안에서 그의 피로 말미암아 속량 곧 죄 사함을 받았느니라”(에베소서 1:7). 예수님은 그를 믿는 사람은 누구든지 “멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게 하려고” 그 길을 열어놓으셨습니다 (요한복음 3:16). 그리스도가 하신 일과 그것을 믿는 우리의 믿음이 우리를 영원히 주님과 함께 있게 합니다.

우리가 예수님을 구주로 믿을 때 하나님의 자녀가 됩니다. 이것이 바로 “우리에게 거저 주시는 바 그의 은혜의 영광”(에베소서 1:6)입니다. 지미처럼 우리도 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지를 바라보며 자신 있게 말할 수 있습니다. “아빠가 같이 가자고 했어요!”

WHAT JESUS DID FOR US

Andres, the owner of an electronics company, was giving employees with outstanding sales records a day trip to a beach resort. Andres was also taking his seven-year-old son Jimmy. Before departure, he excitedly held his dad’s hand as everyone boarded the van. “You’re joining us? How many sales have you made?” one employee jokingly asked Jimmy. “None!” he replied, motioning to his dad. “He’s letting me join!”

Jimmy didn’t have to work to earn his inclusion on the trip because his dad was paying his way. As believers in Jesus, we also don’t rely on our good works as the basis of our inclusion in heaven. We’re granted access because of Jesus’ death and resurrection on our behalf. “The wages of sin is death” (ROMANS 6:23), and Jesus’ own blood was the “payment,” releasing us from our debt to Him. “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins” (EPHESIANS 1:7). He opened the way for whoever believes in Him to “not perish but have eternal life” (JOHN 3:16). Christ’s work and our trust in that work allows us to be with Him for eternity.

When we believe in Jesus as Savior, we become God’s children. Such is His “glorious grace, which he has freely given us” (EPHESIANS 1:6). Like Jimmy, we can look to our heavenly Father and say with confidence, “He’s letting me join!”

다른 목적으로 쓰시는 하나님

1930년대 초, 클레오 맥비커는 벽지를 청소할 수 있는 제품을 생각 해냈습니다. 당시에는 대부분의 집들이 석탄으로 난방을 해 벽지가 그을음으로 덮여 있었습니다. 클레오의 발명품은 벽지 위에 굴리면 그을음을 걷어낼 수 있는 제품이었지만, 그 벽지 클리너는 전혀 인기를 끌지 못했습니다. 그러다 수십 년이 지나 어느 교사가 자기 수업에서 클레오의 제품을 이용해 크리스마스 장식을 만들었습니다. 이를 계기로 ‘레인보우 크래프트’라는 새로운 회사가 세워졌고, 벽지 클리너는 “플레이-도”라는 아이들의 장난감 용도로 재탄생했습니다.

하나님은 훨씬 높은 차원에서 ‘사람들을’ 다른 목적에 사용하십니다. 우리는 성경에 나오는 요셉과 그의 “채색 옷” 이야기를 알고 있습니다. 젊은 시절 하찮은 목동이었던 그를 형제들이 노예로 팔았습니다. 그러나 하나님은 요셉을 큰 어려움들을 겪게 하시면서 나라의 최고 관리가 되게 하셨습니다. 마침내 요셉은 “애굽의 총리”라는 “다른 목적에” 사용되었습니다(창세기 45:26). 그러나 요셉의 부르심은 권력이 아니라 자기 형제들을 용서하여 은혜를 베푸는 것이었습니다(15절).

어떤 면에서 우리 모두는 “실패작”이라 할 수 있습니다. 우리가 다른 목적으로 더 큰 일을 위해 쓰이는 것은 “하나님의 아들 예수님의 은혜”입니다. 오늘을 살면서 당신의 더 높은 목적을 생각하고, 그리스도께서 우리에게 베풀어 주신 것처럼 다른 사람들에게 은혜를 베푸는 것을 잊지 마십시오.

REPURPOSED BY GOD

In the early 1930s, Cleo McVicker came up with a product that could be used as wallpaper cleaner. Back then, most homes were heated by coal, and walls became covered in soot. Cleo’s invention could be rolled over wallpaper and would pick up the grime. Well, the wallpaper cleaner never became popular, but decades later, a teacher used Cleo’s product in her classes to create Christmas ornaments. From that was born a new company— Rainbow Crafts—and the wallpaper cleaner was repurposed as a children’s toy: “Play-Doh.”

On a far greater scale, God has a way of repurposing people. We remember the biblical story of Joseph and his “coat of many colors.” As a young man, he was a lowly shepherd and was sold into slavery by his brothers. But God led Joseph through great difficulties and into the top ranks of government. Eventually Joseph became “repurposed” as “the ruler of all Egypt” (GENESIS 45:26). Yet Joseph’s calling was not about power but about grace—something he extended to his brothers as he forgave them (V. 15).

In a sense, all of us are “failed products.” It’s through “the grace of a Son,” Jesus, that we are repurposed into greater things. As you do life today, think of your higher purpose and remember to extend grace to others, just as Christ does for us.

찬사와 기념물

아론은 아버지의 갑작스러운 죽음 직후, 어머니에게 포스터 크기의 액자를 선물로 드렸습니다. 그 안에는 아버지의 삶을 보여주는 많은 물건들로 수집품, 사진, 돌, 책, 그림, 그 외의 것들이 사진에 담겨있었습니다. 아론은 여러 날 동안 이 물건들을 모으고 배치했고, 여동생 레이첼이 사진으로 담았습니다. 이 선물은 자책감과 중독에 수십 년 시달리면서도 가족에 대한 사랑만큼은 의심의 여지가 없었던 아버지를 기리는 눈에 보이는 찬사였습니다. 또한 아버지 삶의 마지막 10년 동안 중독을 이겨낼 수 있도록 인도하신 하나님의 사랑과 기적의 치유 능력을 증거하는 것이기도 했습니다.

이스라엘 백성이 40년의 긴 세월 후 약속의 땅에 들어갔을 때 여호수아는 각 지파에서 한 사람씩 뽑아 “[그들] 중에 표징이 되게” 마른 강바닥에서 돌을 가져오게 했습니다(여호수아 4:1-6). 여호수아는 이 돌들로 제단을 쌓고 하나님의 능력과 공급하심을 영원히 기념하게 했습니다(19-24절). 이스라엘 백성의 여정은 지금껏 쉽지 않았습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그들과 함께 하시면서 바위에서 물을 내시고, 하늘에서 만나를 내리시며, 낮에는 구름 기둥, 밤에는 불 기둥으로 인도하셨으며, 그들의 옷이 닳지 않게 하셨습니다(신명기 8:4)! 그 기념비는 하나님을 가리키는 것이었습니다.

하나님은 참으로 놀라운 일들을 행하십니다! 우리 모두 공급하시는 하나님의 사랑과 능력을 기리는 영원한 찬사를 남길 수 있기를 바랍니다.

A TRIBUTE AND REMINDER

Shortly after his father’s unexpected death, Aaron gifted his mother with a framed, poster-sized photo of dozens of items that encapsulated his dad’s life—collectibles, photos, rocks, books, artwork, and more—each holding special meaning. Aaron spent days collecting the items and arranging them, and then his sister Rachel captured the arrangement in a photo. The gift was a visual tribute to their father, who despite his decades-long struggle with self-loathing and addiction, never left his love for them in doubt. It also attested to God’s love and miraculous healing power that led to their father’s victory over addiction in the last decade of his life.

When after forty long years God’s people crossed into the promised land, Joshua chose a man from each of the twelve tribes to gather a stone from the dry riverbed to “serve as a sign among [them]” (JOSHUA 4:1-6). Joshua used these rocks to create an altar and lasting tribute to God’s power and provision (VV. 19-24). The Israelites’ journey hadn’t been easy. But God had been with them, providing water out of rocks, manna from the sky, and a pillar of cloud by day and of fire by night to guide them—and clothes that never wore out (DEUTERONOMY 8:4)! The memorial pointed to Him.

God does amazing things! As He provides, may we leave behind a lasting tribute to His love and power.

든든한 반석 예수

미식축구 쿼터백 C.J. 스트라우드는 재능이 있고 당당하게 예수를 믿는 청년입니다. 평균 수명이 3.3년 밖에 되지 않는 프로선수 생활에서 스트라우드는 자신의 믿음의 기반이 어디에 있는지를 주저 없이 말합니다. “미식축구에는 굴곡이 많습니다. 그러나 결국에 가서 가장 중요한 것은 그 사람의 토대입니다. 나의 토대를 이루고 있는 것은 내 신앙입니다.”

미식축구나 어떤 다른 직업에만 인생의 기복과 굴곡이 있는 것은 아닙니다. 마태복음 7:24-27의 예수님의 이야기에 나오는 두 채의 집은 모두 비와 홍수와 바람에 휩쓸렸습니다. 그러나 그중 한 집만이 폭풍을 견뎌냈습니다. “이는 주추를 반석위에 놓은 까닭”(25절)이라고 예수님은 비유로 가르치셨습니다(24, 26절).

우리의 인생에 폭풍이 몰아치기도 하고, 질병과 수많은 어려움이 우리를 어찌할 바 모르게 할 수 있습니다. “폭풍 없는” 인생은 없습니다. 그러나 우리의 확실한 “터”(고린도전서 3:11 참조)인 예수님과 그분의 가르침 위에 우리의 삶을 쌓으면 완전히 달라집니다. 예수님을 받아들이기를 거부하는 사람들은 삶의 폭풍에 더 취약합니다. 그러나 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 따르는 사람들은 안전할 것입니다. “비가 내리고 창수가 나고 바람이 불어 그 집에 부딪치되 무너지지 아니하나니 이는 주추를 반석 위에 놓은 까닭이요”(마태복음 7:25). 진정 가장 중요한 것은 우리의 토대입니다.

SURE FOUNDATION IN CHRIST

American football quarterback C.J. Stroud is young, talented, and an unashamed believer in Jesus. In a profession where the average career span is just 3.3 years, Stroud has been outspoken about where his trust lies. “Football has a lot of . . . twists and turns. But, at the end of the day, it’s all about your foundation. And something that’s set my foundation is my faith.”

Football, or any other profession, isn’t the only sphere of life with ups and downs, twists and turns. Jesus’ story in Matthew 7:24-27 features two houses, each pummeled by rain, floods, and wind. But only one survived the storm: “because it had its foundation on the rock” (V. 25)—Christ’s metaphor for His teaching (VV. 24, 26).

Yes, storms happen in this life. Sickness and countless other dilemmas can leave us spinning. Life isn’t “stormproof,” but building our lives on Jesus and His teaching—our sure “foundation” (SEE 1 CORINTHIANS 3:11)—makes the difference. Those who refuse to embrace Christ are more vulnerable when life’s storms come. But those who listen to His words will find stability: “The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock” (MATTHEW 7:25). Indeed, it’s all about our foundation.

만물을 창조하신 하나님

2021년, ‘스타트렉’ 출연 배우 윌리엄 샤트너는 로켓 캡슐을 타고 우주 여행을 할 기회를 가졌습니다. 후에 그 여행에 대해 회상하면서 자기가 경험한 모든 것이 기대와 달랐다고 말했습니다. 그는 광대한 우주가 모든 생명체와의 깊은 유대감으로 이어져 있으리라 예상했지만, 대신 그는 슬픔을 느꼈다고 했습니다. 깜깜한 우주는 차갑고 공허했으며, 그 때문에 지구의 아름다움과 섬세함을 새롭게 알게 되었다고 했습니다.

우주 여행을 하며 이런 경험을 직접 해본 사람은 많지 않습니다. 하나님께서 우주를 창조하신 성경의 기록은 우리에게 하나님의 관점에서 우주를 보게 합니다. 하나님이 첫번째 하신 일은 “하늘과 땅을” 창조하여 “혼돈하고 공허했던” 것에 질서를 가져오고 “빛과 어둠을 나누신” 것이라고 기록되어 있습니다(창세기 1:1-2, 4). 창조 기록에 관한 나머지 부분에는 하나님이 창조하신 모든 좋은 것들이 드러나 있는데, 그 중에 식물과 동물이 있고, 끝으로 하나님의 형상을 지닌 인간이 있습니다.

가장 어둡고 멀리 떨어진 우주를 포함하여 하나님이 창조하신 모든 것이 그분의 권능과 힘을 드러내고 있지만, 우리는 바로 이 지구 위에서 하나님이 행하신 일을 볼 수 있는 특별한 통찰력을 부여받았습니다. 우리를 둘러싼 만물의 아름다움이 그것을 모두 창조하신 하나님을 경배하라고 우리에게 손짓하고 있습니다.

THE GOD WHO MADE IT ALL

In 2021, Star Trek actor William Shatner enjoyed the opportunity to be catapulted into space in a rocket capsule. When he later reflected on the voyage, he said everything he had expected about the experience was wrong. He’d anticipated the vastness of space would give him a deep sense of connection to all living things, but instead he felt grief: He found the darkness of space cold and empty, which distilled in him a new awareness of earth’s beauty and fragility.

Not many people have ventured into space to have such an experience firsthand. The Bible’s account of God’s creative work in the cosmos invites us to see it through His eyes. God’s first recorded actions were to create “the heavens and the earth” bringing order to what was “formless and empty” and “[separating] the light from the darkness” (GENESIS 1:1-2, 4). The rest of the creation account unfolds all the good things God brought into being, including vegetation, creatures, and, ultimately, His image bearers—humans.

While the entirety of creation—even the darkest, farthest reaches of space—reveals God’s power and might, we’ve been given special insight into His work right here on earth. The beauty that surrounds us beckons us to worship the one who made it all.

프레드릭 뷰크너의 역사 소설 ‘브렌던’의 마지막 부분에 감동적인 장면이 나옵니다. 길다스라는 사람이 일어서자 무릎 아래가 없는 한쪽 다리가 드러납니다. 그가 지팡이를 잡으려 손을 뻗다가 균형을 잃고 맙니다. 그때 브렌던이 벌떡 일어나 그를 붙잡아줍니다.

길다스가 말합니다. “불구로 사는 세상은 너무 어두워요.” 이에 브렌던이 대답합니다. “그 얘기를 하자면 우리 중 불구 아닌 사람이 어디 있겠어요? 하나가 넘어지면 옆에서 도와주어야지요. 결국에 정말 중요한 것은 바로 그것뿐인 것 같아요.”

우리는 사무엘하 9장에서 다윗 왕이 사울의 집안에 아직 살아 있는 사람이 있으면 누구든 보살피려 했던 것을 봅니다(1절). 그 중에 “요나단의 아들 하나가 있는데 다리 저는 자”(3절) 므비보셋이 있었습니다. 왕 앞으로 인도되어 온 므비보셋은 이런 말을 듣습니다. “네 할아버지 사울의 모든 밭을 다 네게 도로 주겠고 또 너는 항상 내 상에서 떡을 먹을지니라”(7절). 그리고 실제로 그는 늘 그렇게 했습니다.

THE WORK THAT MATTERS

There’s a poignant scene near the end of Frederick Buechner’s historical novel Brendan. The character Gildas stands up to reveal one of his legs missing from the knee down. As he reaches for his walking stick, he loses his balance. Brendan leaps up and catches him.

“I’m as crippled as the dark world,” Gildas says. “If it comes to that, which one of us isn’t?” Brendan replies. “To lend each other a hand when we’re falling. Perhaps that’s the only work that matters in the end.”

In 2 Samuel 9, we find King David desiring to show kindness to anyone still living from the house of Saul (V. 1). There is one, Mephibosheth, “a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet” (V. 3). Mephibosheth is ushered into the king’s presence, where he hears these words: “I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table” (V. 7). And he always did.

Scripture is full of unforgettable stories of David and giants and armies and kings and kingdoms—the stuff of movies. But the Bible also remembers this poignant kindness shown toward a person in need—the story of someone lending a hand to another.

After all the big, flashy scenes fade, it’s possible that kindness such as David extended to Mephibosheth is the work that matters most in the end. Lending a hand is the kind of work you and I can be about each and every day.
