음악의 힘

THE POWER OF MUSIC

On November 21, 1915, the hope of Sir Ernest Shackleton and his twenty-seven crew members sank, along with their ship Endurance, into the darkness below the Antarctic ice. They were stranded thousands of miles from home. Later, the crew shared several things that aided their survival, including a banjo. Embarking on their brutal trek, Leonard Hussey (the expedition’s meteorologist) was the only person allowed more than two pounds of personal gear. He was allowed to bring his twelve-pound Windsor banjo. “It’s vital mental medicine,” Shackleton told Hussey, “and we shall need it.” The crew’s journals explained the power of Hussey’s music. “The banjo does . . . supply brain food,” wrote one sailor. Another reflected on “Hussey’s indispensable banjo.”

The Bible presents music as one of God’s immense gifts, a way His healing and comfort enter the human heart. In the tragic story of King Saul, we hear how (due to his disobedience) he was oppressed by an “evil spirit” (1 SAMUEL 16:14). And what did Saul’s attendants believe the king needed to provide relief? Music. So they found young David with his harp: “David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him” (V. 23).

Music offers more than mere entertainment. It can bring joy, renew hope, and comfort weary souls. It’s truly one of God’s powerful gifts.

우리의 몫, 하나님의 몫

싱가포르에서는 정부가 기부금 매칭 제도를 통해 사람들이 좋은 일을 돕고 나서는 것을 장려합니다. 특정 자선 단체들에 기부하면 정부가 그 금액과 같거나 더 많은 금액을 “추가”로 보조합니다. 이렇게 사람들이 기부한 것을 효과적으로 늘려서 더 적극적으로 기부에 참여하도록 돕고자 하는 취지입니다.

이렇게 양면적으로 접근하는 것은 예수님을 믿는 사람들이 제자의 삶을 살면서 어떻게 하나님의 거룩함의 기준에 이르는지를 생각나게 합니다. 바울은 빌립보서에서 “너희 구원을 이루라”(2:12)고 하며 “달려가라”(3:12, 14)고 말합니다. 동시에 그는 “너희 안에서 행하시는 이는 하나님이시니 자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 너희에게 소원을 두고 행하게 하신다”고 강조합니다(2:13).

예수님을 믿는 사람들은 선행이나 성과로 하나님과의 올바른 관계가 성립되는 것이 아닙니다. 그러나 우리의 영적 성장에는 파트너십이란 것이 있습니다. 영적 성장은 우리의 마음과 노력을 필요로 하지만, 그럼에도 그것은 인간의 힘으로만 되는 것이 아닙니다. 은혜로 우리를 구원하신 하나님은 우리를 거룩하게, 곧 하나님을 위해 구별되도록 부르시며, 우리는 이에 진실함과 감사함으로 응답합니다. 우리가 하나님께 순종하며 기쁘시게 하려고 노력할 때 하나님께서 그것을 가능하도록 도우십니다. 하나님은 우리가 다른 길로 갈 때에 깨달음을 주시고(빌립보서 3:15), 유혹을 이겨낼 힘을 주시며(고린도전서 10:13), 하나님 보시기에 선한 일을 할 힘을 주십니다(에베소서 2:10).

OUR PART, GOD’S PART

In Singapore, the government encourages people to support good causes by donation-matching. It “tops up” donations to specific charities by contributing an equal amount or more. By effectively multiplying people’s contributions, it hopes to encourage them to become more involved in charitable giving.

This two-pronged approach reminds me of how believers in Jesus are called to God’s standards of holiness in our discipleship journey. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul urges them “to work out [their] salvation” (2:12) and “press on” (3:12, 14). At the same time, he stresses that “it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (2:13).

Believers in Jesus aren’t made right with God by good works or performance. But there is an idea of partnership in our spiritual growth. It requires heart and effort on our part, yet we do not do it by human strength. Having saved us by grace, God calls us to be holy—set apart for Him—and we respond in sincerity and gratitude. As we seek to obey and please Him, He enables and helps us to do so. He shows us when we go wrong (PHILIPPIANS 3:15), gives us strength to resist temptation (1 CORINTHIANS 10:13), and empowers us to do what’s right in His eyes (EPHESIANS 2:10).

넉넉한 나눔

오스왈드 챔버스와 그의 아내 비디 챔버스는 1911년부터 1915년까지 런던에서 성경학교를 운영하며 가난한 사람들을 외면하지 않는 삶의 원칙을 이어갔습니다. 약삭빠른 런던 사람들은 이 학교가 이용만 당할 것이라 생각하며 이런 결정에 놀랐습니다. 이에 대해 오스왈드는 다른 사람들도 그렇게 할 것을 권하지는 않았지만 이렇게 말했습니다. “나의 책임은 주는 것입니다. 구하는 자는 하나님께서 보살피실 것입니다.”

GENEROUS GIVING

When Oswald and Biddy Chambers ran a Bible college in London from 1911 to 1915, they continued with their life principle of not turning away those in need. Astute Londoners were aghast at this practice, thinking the college would be taken advantage of. In response, Oswald observed, without inviting others to follow in the practice, “My responsibility is to give. God will look after who asks.”

The couple followed the example of our generous Creator. Through His instructions to Moses, God laid out gracious ways for His people to live and serve others, including the giving of their food and possessions. Moses told the Israelites at the end of every three years to “bring all the tithes” so the Levites, “foreigners, the fatherless and the widows,” could come and “eat and be satisfied” (DEUTERONOMY 14:28-29). Through the generosity of His people, God cares for the vulnerable.

The Chambers’ trust in God was so strong that they gave willingly and without question. They’d learned to “revere . . . God always” (V. 23) and receive His blessing “in all the work of [their] hands” (V. 29).

We may also feel inspired to give freely while we lean on God for wisdom and discernment. We know that God will generously lead and guide as He provides for the foreigners, the fatherless, and the widows.

하나님의 돌보심을 확장하기

십대였을 때 나는 교회 친구인 리사와 사이가 좋지 않았습니다. 그래서 청소년 여름캠프에서 리사와 한 방을 쓰게 되었다는 것을 알고 크게 실망했지만, 서로 조심하며 캠프에서의 한 주를 순조롭게 지냈습니다.

가장 기다리던 행사는 캠프 마지막 날에 열리는 캠프파이어였습니다. 하지만 그날 밤 나는 열이 나서 일찍 잠자리에 들었는데, 밖에서 나는 웃음소리와 음악소리가 들렸습니다. 한 시간쯤 뒤 나는 내 체온을 재고 있는 리사를 보고 깜짝 놀랐습니다. “캠프파이어에 가지 않을 거야. 네가 아프니까 네 곁에 있어야 할 것 같아.”라고 리사가 말했습니다. 나랑 상관하지 않을 수도 있었지만, 리사는 나를 돌보기로 마음먹었고 그 사실이 내 기분을 좋게 해주었습니다.

나아만 장군에 관한 이야기에서 우리는 돌봄을 실천한 또 다른 인물의 예를 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 아람 군대 장관인 나아만에게는 포로로 잡혀와 “나아만의 아내에게 수종 들던” 이스라엘 소녀가 있었습니다(열왕기하 5:2). 가족과 떨어져 노예생활을 해야 했던 그 소녀는 나병에 걸린 자신의 주인을 돕지 않으려 할 수도 있었습니다. 그러나 소녀의 믿음이 주인을 돕도록 만들었습니다. “그의 여주인에게 이르되 우리 주인이 사마리아에 계신 선지자 앞에 계셨으면 좋겠 나이다 그가 그 나병을 고치리이다”(3절). 그리고 실제로 하나님께서는 엘리사 선지자를 통해 나아만의 병을 고치셨습니다(8-14절).

리사와 이스라엘 소녀가 도움을 주기로 마음먹자, 하나님께서 그들을 통해 역사하셨습니다. 우리도 하나님께 주위의 누가 하나님의 돌보심이 필요한지 보여주시고, 또 어떻게 그들을 돌볼 수 있는지 지혜를 주시기를 간구합시다.

EXTENDING GOD’S CARE

As a teenager, I had a strained relationship with my churchmate Lisa, so I was dismayed to learn we’d be roommates at our youth summer camp. The week at camp passed smoothly, though, with both of us being civil.

The most anticipated event was a bonfire gathering at the end of the week. On that evening, however, I had a fever. I went to bed early, but I could hear the laughter and music outside. An hour later, I was startled by Lisa, who was taking my temperature. “I’m not joining them at the bonfire,” she said. “You’re sick. I need to stay with you.” Lisa could’ve stayed uninvolved, but she chose to care for me, which lifted my spirits.

We see another example of someone who cared in the story of Naaman. The commander of the Syrian army, Naaman had an Israelite servant girl who’d been taken captive and now “served Naaman’s wife” (2 KINGS 5:2). Separated from family and forced to servitude, the girl could’ve chosen to not help her master, who had leprosy. But her faith moved her to help: “She said to her mistress, ‘If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him” (V. 3). And God did, in fact, use the prophet Elisha to heal Naaman (VV. 8-14).

Lisa and the Israelite girl chose to help, and God worked through them. Let’s ask God to show us who we can extend His care to and give us the wisdom how.

하나님의 용서 따라하기

예전에 맷지라는 여성과 함께 일한 적이 있는데 정말 요리를 잘했습니다. 어느 날 그는 내게 “제 완두콩 햄 수프를 한번 맛보셔야 해요!”라고 했습니다. 내가 완두콩을 정말 싫어한다고 답하자 맷지는 웃으며, “제 수프를 드셔 보시면 좋아하시게 될 거예요.”라고 했습니다. 그 다음 날 맷지는 나를 위해 특별히 만든 수프 한 통을 건네주었습니다.

이틀 후 맷지가 “제 수프 드셔 보셨어요?”라고 물었습니다. 나는 “곧 먹어 볼게요!”라고 답하면서 더 이상 묻지 않기를 바랐습니다. 하지만 그는 다음 날에도, 그 다음 날에도 계속 물어보았습니다. 넷째 날에는 “너무 오래 두면 상할 거에요.”라는 말까지 덧붙였습니다.

IMITATING GOD’S FORGIVENESS

I used to work with a woman named Madge, who was an amazing cook. “You should taste my pea and ham soup!” she said one day. After replying that I really didn’t like peas, Madge smiled and said, “You will after you try my soup.” The next day she handed me a container of her soup, made especially for me.

“Did you try my soup?” Madge asked me a couple of days later. “I will—soon!” I said, hoping she wouldn’t ask me again. But she did—the next day, and the next. “Don’t leave it too long or it’ll spoil,” she added on the fourth day.

A week later, Madge’s uneaten soup had spoiled, and I threw it away. I felt dread as she approached me. “You did try my soup, didn’t you?” she asked.

“Yes,” I said. “It was . . . delicious.”

In Ephesians 4, Paul calls us to deal with speech-related sins like angry words (V. 26), unwholesome talk (V. 29), and slander (V. 31). But before these comes a more basic call to “speak truthfully to your neighbor” (V. 25). I had looked at Madge and told her a lie. I knew what I needed to do.

I walked into Madge’s office, confessed my lie, and sheepishly asked for her forgiveness. Madge walked to me and gave me a hug. “Of course I forgive you,” she said. “How could I not, when I know how much God’s forgiven me?”

하나님을 기다림

어린 소녀 시절, 나는 도로변에 특별한 표지판들이 보일 때마다 몹시 신나 했습니다. 알록달록한 표지판들이 가족이 운전해서 가고 있는 유명한 놀이공원에 도착했다는 것을 의미한다고 생각했기 때문입니다. 나는 즐겁게 짐을 챙기기 시작했지만 이내 더 많은 표지판이 보여서, 놀이공원에 도착하려면 한참 더 기다려야 한다는 사실에 실망했습니다. 마침내 나는 그 표지판들이 방문객들이 목적지에 가까워지고 있다는 것을 알려주고 있지만, 여전히 몇 마일을 더 가야 한다는 것을 의미한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

“아직 멀었어요?”라고 물으면서 궁금해하고 흥분하는 아이처럼 우리도 다음 목적지에 도착하기를 조급해하고 초조해할 수 있습니다.

하나님께서 우리 삶에 개입하시기를, 그리고 시련에서 구해 주시기를 기다리는 것은 힘든 일일 수 있습니다. 시편 27편에서 내내 언급하듯이 다윗은 많은 역경에 직면해 있었습니다. 그러나 그는 여전히 하나님께 희망과 믿음을 품고 그분이 응답하시기를 기다렸습니다. 다윗은 하나님께서 행동하실 때까지 얼마나 걸릴지 몰랐지만, 하나님께서 자신을 도와주실 것이라고 확신하였습니다. “내가 산 자들의 땅에서 여호와의 선하심을 보게 될 줄 확실히 믿었도다”(13절).

WAITING ON GOD

As a little girl, I got so excited when I’d see special signs appear on the side of the road. I thought colorful signs meant my family had arrived at the popular amusement park we were driving to. I’d joyfully start gathering my things, only to be disappointed to see more signs and have to wait even longer before we reached the park. Eventually I realized those signs announced that visitors were getting closer but were still miles away.

Like an excited child wondering “are we there yet?” we can also be impatient and anxious to arrive at our next destination.

Waiting for God to move in our lives, or to rescue us from our trials, can be challenging. David was facing much adversity, which he mentions throughout Psalm 27. Yet he still placed his hope and trust in God and waited for Him to respond. David didn’t know how long it would take for God to act, but he knew God would help him. “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” (V. 13).

It may take longer than we’d like to experience our breakthrough, but let’s take courage in these words: “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” (V. 14). As we turn to the Psalms and the rest of Scripture for encouragement, we can take comfort in knowing God is working even while we wait.

오래된 코미디 영화에서, 어설프지만 총명한 프로그래머가 화성으로 가는 첫 유인 우주 비행대원으로 선발되었습니다. 그 프로그래머는 자꾸 엉뚱한 실수를 저지르며 “제가 안 그랬어요!”라고 습관처럼 내뱉곤 했습니다. 우주선이 화성에 착륙하자 그는 동료가 발을 디디기 직전 사다리 꼭대기에서 미끄러져 화성 표면으로 떨어졌습니다. 화성에서 처음으로 터져 나온 말도 다름 아닌 “제가 안 그랬어요!” 였습니다.

익살스러운 이야기지만, 그 프로그래머의 말은 소름 끼치도록 현실적입니다. 책임을 전가할 일이 생길 때마다 우리의 반응은 “제가 안 그랬어요!”라고 말하는 것과 너무도 닮아 있기 때문입니다.

하나님은 우리가 순종하기를 바라시지만, 또한 우리가 하나님께 불순종하기 쉽다는 것도 알고 계십니다. 레위기 26:1-13에서 하나님은 이스라엘을 위한 계획의 윤곽을 보여주십니다. 그들이 하나님의 명령에 순종하면, 하나님은 “내가 너희를 돌보아 너희를 번성하게 하고 너희를 창대하게 할 것이라“(9절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 습관적인 불순종으로 말미암아 백성을 회개하도록 만들기 위한 저주와 고난이 그들에게 임했습니다. 그렇지만 하나님은 불순종한 이스라엘이 “자기의 죄악과 그들의 조상의 죄악을 자복하면”(40절) 그들과 맺은 언약을 기억하실 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다.

하나님과의 관계를 회복하는데 있어 핵심은 우리가 무엇을 잘못했는지 인정하는 것입니다. 다른 사람을 탓하는 것은 우리를 계속해서 죄의 굴레에 얽매이게 하고 우리 자신을 변호할 힘을 잃게 만듭니다.

하나님과 멀리 떨어져 있다고 느끼십니까? 가장 먼저 해야 할 일은 “제가 그랬어요.” 라고 시인하는 것입니다.

IT WAS ME

In an old movie comedy, a bumbling but brilliant programmer is chosen for the first manned mission to Mars. Constantly making foolish mistakes, the programmer has a habit of blurting out, “It wasn’t me!” When the crew lands on Mars, the programmer slips from the top of the ladder and falls to the planet’s surface—just before his partner sets foot on it. The first words spoken on Mars are, “It wasn’t me!”

It’s a farcical story, but that programmer’s phrase is hauntingly realistic. Whenever there’s blame to go around, our response can sound a lot like, “It wasn’t me!”

God desires our obedience. But He also knows we’re prone to disobey Him. In Leviticus 26:1-13, God outlined His plan for Israel. If they obeyed His commands, He said, “I will look on you with favor and make you fruitful and increase your numbers” (V. 9). But habitual disobedience would bring curses and afflictions designed to bring the people to repentance. Then God said that if disobedient Israel would “confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors” (V. 40), He would remember His covenant with them.

The key to restoring relationship with God is our admission of what we’ve done wrong. Blaming others keeps us trapped in the guilt cycle, powerless to vindicate ourselves.

Feeling far from God? A good place to start is by saying, “It was me.”

예수님으로부터 오는 기쁨

낸시는 항암치료 때문에 입안과 목구멍에 너무 많은 궤양이 생겨 빵 한 조각조차 삼킬 수 없어서 고통의 나날 동안 우유로만 배를 채워야 했습니다. 예순 살의 낸시에게 미소를 띠게 하는 것은 오직 예수님을 아는 기쁨과 그의 손자들 뿐이었습니다. 매주 손자들과 함께하는 일은 낸시가 자신의 병든 처지에 머물지 않도록 도와주었습니다. 낸시는 고백합니다. “손자들이 없었더라면 아마 포기했을 거예요.”

바울 사도도 자신이 겪는 어려움에도 불구하고 예수님과 다른 이들에게서 기쁨을 찾았습니다. 그의 기쁨은 예수님, 그리고 예수님을 위해 사는 삶에서 왔습니다. 그래서 바울은 감옥에 갇혀 있으면서도(빌립보서 1:13) 다른 사람들을 격려할 힘이 생겼습니다. 바울은 예수님에 대한 복음을 나누는 기쁨과, 죽음 이후에 기다리고 있는 하늘나라를 아는 기쁨에 대해 말했습니다(3-5, 18, 20절). 그런 확신 덕분에 그는 “내게 사는 것이 그리스도니 죽는 것도 유익하다“(21절)고 말할 수 있었습니다.

JOY FROM JESUS

Nancy’s cancer treatment caused so many ulcers in her mouth and throat that she couldn’t even swallow a piece of bread. She had to rely on milk to fill her stomach for many painful days. The only thing that brought a smile to the sixty-year-old’s face was the joy of knowing Jesus—and her grandsons. Being with them each week helped her to not dwell on her situation. “If not for the boys, I would have given up,” she said.

The apostle Paul also found joy in Jesus and others despite his difficulties. His joy came from Jesus and living for Him. Despite being imprisoned (PHILIPPIANS 1:13), he found strength to encourage others. He spoke of the joy that came from partnering in sharing the good news about Jesus, and from knowing what awaited him upon death (VV. 3-5, 18, 20). That confidence enabled him to say, “To me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (V. 21).

Paul could rejoice because Jesus was his life. His sense of contentment and security didn’t come from any possession or situation but from knowing he belonged to Christ. Thus, in a letter written in the worst of circumstances, he could say in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

May we find joy in Jesus, who loves us, cares for us, and gives us strength to rejoice in any circumstance.

잠깐 한눈을 팔다가 사라는 그만 자신도 모르게 다이아몬드 약혼반지를 노숙자가 들고 있던 컵에 떨어뜨렸습니다. 반지를 얻은 걸인 빌리 레이는 반지를 감정 받은 후 그 반지를 팔아버릴까 고민했습니다. 하지만 그는 정직을 선택했고 며칠 후 사라가 다시 찾아왔을 때 반지를 돌려주었습니다. 사라와 남편은 빌리 레이를 돕기 위해 모금 활동을 시작했고, 이는 다른 사람들의 아낌없는 후원으로 이어졌습니다. 빌리 레이는 재정 및 법률 자문을 받아 마침내 집을 살 수 있었으며, 오랫동안 헤어졌던 가족과도 다시 합치게 되었습니다.

ACTING WITH INTEGRITY

In a moment of distraction, Sarah unknowingly dropped her diamond engagement ring into a homeless man’s cup. Billy Ray, the panhandler who was given the ring, had it appraised and considered selling it. But he chose honesty and returned it to Sarah when she came back a few days later. Sarah and her husband set up a fund so donations could be made to help Billy Ray, which led to an outpouring of generosity from others. Billy Ray received financial and legal counsel and was eventually able to buy a home. He was also reunited with his long-lost family.

When we practice integrity, we please God and inspire others. Solomon says God delighted in his integrity: “The Lord detests lying lips, but He delights in people who are trustworthy” (PROVERBS 12:22). He uses strong language to describe God’s view of dishonesty—He detests it. When God’s people lie or “deceit is in [their] hearts” (V. 20), it defies Him and goes against His character. In contrast, when His people have “truthful lips” (V. 19) and deal faithfully, it brings Him joy. So treating others well is more than just telling the truth—it reflects God’s own character. And in a world where deception can seem profitable, our integrity is something He “delights in” (V. 22).

Let’s commit to act with integrity as God helps us. Even if the world doesn’t notice, He’s delighted when we walk in His ways.

쉼을 가지려면

“전술적 낮잠”은 군인들이 10분에서 30분 정도 효과적인 잠을 잘 수 있도록 마련된 일련의 지침입니다. 아드레날린이 치솟거나 외로움, 불안감 등에 시달릴 때, 수면이 부족한 군인들은 휴식을 취하기 어려울 수 있습니다. 이 지침에는 귀마개 사용과 잠들기 전 책 읽기 등이 포함되어 있습니다. 심지어 낮잠 후 몽롱함을 줄이기 위해 군용 카페인 껌이 제공되기도 합니다.

FINDING REST

“Tactical napping” is a series of guidelines for soldiers for effective, ten to thirty minutes of sleep. While experiencing a rush of adrenaline, loneliness, or anxiety, sleepdeprived soldiers may not be able to relax. Tips include using earplugs and reading before bed. They’re even offered militarygrade, caffeinated chewing gum to reduce grogginess after a nap.

It’s when we most need rest that it’s often difficult to find. King David experienced this after fleeing into the wilderness to escape his son Absalom’s treason. David and his followers wept aloud at his betrayal with their heads covered in mourning (2 SAMUEL 15:30-31). In fact, “the whole countryside wept aloud” (V. 23). It was around this time that David cried out, “Lord, how many are my foes!” (PSALM 3:1). Perhaps thinking about past troubled nights, however, David continued, “I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear” (VV. 5-6). David realized that God, not Absalom, was in charge of his situation. David even sent the ark of the covenant back to Jerusalem, acknowledging that the future was fully in God’s hands (2 SAMUEL 15:25-26).

Sleep feels especially fleeting when we’re facing adversity in our waking hours, but it’s a good reminder of how many things are outside our control. Yet God sustains us and, as we trust Him, He can help us lie down in peace.
