옳은 일 하기

우리 부부는 재소자 ‘제이슨’에게서 온 편지를 보고 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 우리는 장애가 있는 사람들을 돕는 보조견이 될 강아지들을 “맡아 기르고” 있습니다. 그 강아지들 중 한 마리가 개를 훈련시키는 법을 배운 재소자들이 진행하는 훈련 과정을 마쳤던 것입니다. 제이슨은 편지에서 그의 과거에 대해 뉘우치고 있다고 하면서, “스니커스는 내가 훈련시킨 열 일곱 번째 개인데 그 중에 최고입니다. 그 개가 나를 쳐다보고 있을 때면 나는 마침내 무언가 옳은 일을 하고 있다는 느낌이 듭니다.”라고 썼습니다.

과거를 뉘우치는 사람은 제이슨만이 아닙니다. 우리 모두 다 후회를 합니다. 유다왕 므낫세도 많은 후회를 했습니다. 역대하 33장에는 그가 저지른 만행의 일부가 적혀 있습니다. 이방신들을 위해 성적으로 노골적인 제단을 쌓고(3절), 사술을 행하고, 자신의 자녀들을 제물로 바쳤습니다(6절). 그는 온 나라를 추악한 길로 이끌었습니다(9절).

“여호와께서 므낫세와 그의 백성에게 이르셨으나 그들이 듣지 아니하였습니다”(10절). 그러나 결국 그가 하나님을 다시 찾는 일이 생겼습니다. 앗수르가 침공하여 “갈고리로 그의 코를 꿰고... 그를 바빌론으로 끌고 갔습니다”(11절, 현대인의 성경). 그러자 므낫세가 마침내 옳은 일을 했습니다. “그는 자기 하나님 여호와를 찾고... 완전히 자신을 낮추었습니다”(12절, 현대인의 성경). 하나님은 그의 기도를 들으시고 그를 다시 왕으로 세워주셨습니다. 므낫세는 이방신을 섬기는 것을 그치고 유일하신 참 하나님을 섬겼습니다 (15-16절).

후회 때문에 아주 낙심되어 있지는 않습니까? 지금도 전혀 늦지 않았습니다. 하나님은 우리의 겸손한 회개의 기도를 들어주십니다.

DOING SOMETHING RIGHT

The letter from “Jason,” an inmate, surprised my wife and me. We “foster” puppies to become service dogs to assist people with disabilities. One such puppy had graduated to the next training phase, which was run by prisoners who have been taught how to train the dogs. Jason’s letter to us expressed sorrow for his past, but then he said, “Snickers is the seventeenth dog I’ve trained, and she is the best one. When I see her looking up at me, I feel like I’m finally doing something right.”

Jason isn’t the only one with regrets. We all have them. Manasseh, king of Judah, had plenty. Second Chronicles 33 outlines some of his atrocities: building sexually explicit altars to pagan gods (V. 3), practicing witchcraft, and sacrificing his own children (V. 6). He led the entire nation down this sordid path (V. 9).

“The Lord spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they paid no attention” (V. 10). Eventually, God got his attention. The Assyrians invaded, “put a hook in his nose . . . and took him to Babylon” (V. 11). Next, Manasseh finally did something right. “He sought the favor of the Lord his God and humbled himself greatly” (V. 12). God heard him and restored him as king. Manasseh replaced the pagan practices with worship of the one true God (VV. 15–16).

Do your regrets threaten to consume you? It’s not too late. God hears our humble prayer of repentance.

무엇을 위해 살아야 하나?

해롤드가 말했습니다. “나는 정말 쓸모가 없다고 느꼈습니다. 아내와는 사별하고 퇴직한 데다, 자식들은 제각기 자기 가족들과 바쁘게 지내고 있어서 나는 벽의 그림자나 보며 조용한 오후를 보내고 있으니까요.” 그는 딸에게 종종 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 늙었고 인생을 다 살았구나. 더 이상 살아야 할 목적이 없어. 하나님이 나를 아무 때나 데려가셔도 그만이야.”

우리의 나이나 배경, 혹은 상황이 어떻더라도, 우리에게는 삶의 목적이 있습니다. 바로 다른 사람들에게 예수님을 전하는 것입니다.

WHAT’S MY PURPOSE?

“I felt so useless,” Harold said. “Widowed and retired, kids busy with their own families, spending quiet afternoons watching shadows on the wall.” He’d often tell his daughter, “I’m old and have lived a full life. I have no purpose anymore. God can take me any time.”

One afternoon, however, a conversation changed Harold’s mind. “My neighbor had some problems with his kids, so I prayed for him,” Harold said. “Later, I shared the gospel with him. That’s how I realized I still have a purpose! As long as there are people who haven’t heard of Jesus, I must tell them about the Savior.”

When Harold responded to an everyday, ordinary encounter by sharing his faith, his neighbor’s life was changed. In 2 Timothy 1, the apostle Paul mentions two women who’d likewise been used by God to change another person’s life: the life of Paul’s young coworker, Timothy. Lois, Timothy’s grandmother, and Eunice, his mother, had a “sincere faith” which they’d passed on to him (V. 5). Through everyday events in an ordinary household, young Timothy learned a genuine faith that was to shape his growth into a faithful disciple of Jesus and, eventually, his ministry as leader of the church at Ephesus.

No matter what our age, background, or circumstances, we have a purpose—to tell others about Jesus.

PRAYER AND TRANSFORMATION

In 1982, pastor Christian Führer began Monday prayer meetings at Leipzig’s St. Nicholas Church. For years, a handful gathered to ask God for peace amid global violence and the oppressive East German regime. Though communist authorities watched churches closely, they were unconcerned until attendance swelled and spilled over to mass meetings outside the church gates. On October 9, 1989, seventy thousand demonstrators met and peacefully protested. Six thousand East German police stood ready to respond to any provocation. The crowd remained peaceful, however, and historians consider this day a watershed moment. A month later, the Berlin Wall fell. The massive transformation all started with a prayer meeting.

As we turn to God and begin relying on His wisdom and strength, things often begin to shift and reshape. Like Israel, when we cry “out to the Lord in [our] trouble,” we discover the God who alone is capable of profoundly transforming even our most dire predicaments and answering our most vexing questions (PSALM 107:28). God stills “the storm to a whisper” and turns “the desert into pools of water” (VV. 29, 35). The One to whom we pray brings hope out of despair and beauty out of ruin.

But it’s God who (in His time—not ours) enacts transformation. Prayer is how we participate in the transforming work He’s doing.

매일의 삶을 위한 능력

책 ‘매순간 거룩한 삶’은 삶의 여러가지 활동, 즉 식사를 준비하거나 빨래를 하는 등, 평소의 일들을 하며 드릴 수 있는 기도에 관한 좋은 책입니다. 반복적이고 지루하게 느껴질 수 있지만 꼭 해야 할 일들을 말하는 것입니다. 이 책을 읽으며 작가 체스터턴이 쓴 말이 생각났습니다. “밥 먹을 때 감사기도를 하는 것은 좋은 일입니다. 하지만 나는 스케치할 때, 그림을 그리거나 수영, 펜싱, 복싱, 걷기, 놀이, 춤추기 전에도 감사하고, 또 펜에 잉크를 묻히기 전에도 감사합니다.”

이런 권면은 내 일상의 행동을 다시 들여다보게 만듭니다. 가끔 나는 식사 전에 말씀 묵상하는 것처럼 영적인 가치가 있는 일과, 식사 후 설거지를 하는 것 같이 내 생각에 영적으로 별 가치가 없어 보이는 일을 구분하는 경향이 있습니다. 하지만 바울은 예수님을 위해 살기로 결심한 골로새 교인들에게 보낸 편지에서 그런 구분을 없애 버렸습니다. 그는 “무엇을 하든지 말에나 일에나 다 주 예수의 이름으로 하라”(3:17)고 하면서 그들을 격려했습니다. 예수님의 이름으로 행한다는 것은 우리가 주님을 높이며 행한다는 뜻인 동시에, 우리가 일들을 성취하도록 성령님이 힘을 주신다는 것을 확신하는 것을 의미합니다.

“무엇을 하든지” 우리 삶의 모든 일상활동은 매 순간 성령님이 주시는 능력으로 예수님을 높이며 행해질 수 있습니다.

EMPOWERED FOR THE EVERYDAY

Every Moment Holy is a beautiful book of prayers for a variety of activities, including ordinary ones like preparing a meal or doing the laundry. Necessary tasks that can feel repetitive or mundane. The book reminded me of the words of author G. K. Chesterton, who wrote, “You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing and grace before I dip the pen in the ink.”

Such encouragement reorients my perspective on the activities of my day. Sometimes I’m inclined to divide my activities into ones that appear to have spiritual value, like reading devotions before a meal, and other activities I think have little spiritual value, such as doing the dishes after the meal. Paul erased that divide in a letter to the people of Colossae who had chosen to live for Jesus. He encouraged them with these words: “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (3:17). Doing things in Jesus’ name means both honoring Him as we do them and having the assurance that His Spirit helps strengthen us to accomplish them.

“Whatever you do.” All the ordinary activities of our lives, every moment, can be empowered by God’s Spirit and done in a way that honors Jesus.

DEEP WATERS

When Bill Pinkney sailed solo around the world in 1992—taking the hard route around the perilous Great Southern Capes— he did it for a higher purpose. His voyage was to inspire and educate children. That included students at his former inner-city Chicago elementary school. His goal? To show how far they could go by studying hard and making a commitment—the word he chose in naming his boat. When Bill takes schoolkids on the water in Commitment, he says, “They’ve got that tiller in their hand and they learn about control, self-control, they learn about teamwork . . . all the basics that one needs in life to be successful.”

Pinkney’s words paint a portrait of Solomon’s wisdom. “The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out” (PROVERBS 20:5). He invited others to examine their life goals. Otherwise, “it is a trap,” said Solomon, “to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider one’s vows” (V. 25).

In contrast, William Pinkney had a clear purpose that eventually inspired thirty thousand students across the United States to learn from his journey. He became the first African American inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame. “Kids were watching,” he said. With similar purpose, let’s set our course by the deep counsel of God’s instructions to us.

개인적인 책임

친구의 두 눈에서도 내가 느끼고 있는 것이 보였습니다. ‘두려움’ 이었습니다! 십대 소년이던 우리 둘은 버릇없이 행동한 죄로 캠프 책임자 앞에서 고개를 숙이고 있었습니다. 우리 각자의 아버지를 잘 알고 있었던 그는 다정하면서도 날카로운 어조로 너희 아버지들이 크게 실망할 것이라고 말했습니다. 우리가 저지른 잘못에 대한 개인적인 책임감에 짓눌려서 탁자 아래로 기어들어가고 싶은 심정이었습니다.

하나님은 유다 백성에게 죄에 대한 개인적인 책임을 묻는 엄중한 경고를 담은 메시지를 스바냐에게 주셨습니다(스바냐 1:1, 6-7). 유다의 원수들에게 내릴 심판을 설명하신 후에(2장), 하나님은 죄를 짓고 몸부림치는 자신의 백성에게 눈을 돌리셨습니다(3장). “패역하고 더러운 곳, 포악한 예루살렘에 화가 있을 것이라”고 하나님이 선포하셨습니다(3:1). “그들은 부지런히 그들의 모든 행위를 더럽게 [하고 있습니다]”(7절).

하나님은 그의 백성들의 냉담한 마음, 곧 영적 무관심과 사회적 불의, 추악한 탐욕을 보시고 사랑의 징계를 내리셨습니다. 개인적으로 “지도자”이든, “사사”이든, “선지자”이든(3-4절) 그것은 중요하지 않았습니다. 모든 사람이 하나님 앞에 죄를 지었기 때문이었습니다.

바울 사도는 예수님을 믿으면서도 죄에서 벗어나지 못하고 있는 자들에게 “진노를 네게 쌓는도다 하나님께서 각 사람에게 그 행한 대로 보응하신다” (로마서 2:5-6)고 썼습니다. 그러므로 예수님의 권능 안에서 거룩하고 사랑이 많으신 우리 하나님 아버지를 영화롭게 하며 후회 없는 삶을 살도록 합시다.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

My friend’s eyes revealed what I was feeling—fear! We two teens had behaved poorly and were now cowering before the camp director. The man, who knew our dads well, shared lovingly but pointedly that our fathers would be greatly disappointed. We wanted to crawl under the table—feeling the weight of personal responsibility for our offense.

God gave Zephaniah a message for the people of Judah that contained potent words about personal responsibility for sin (ZEPHANIAH 1:1, 6–7). After describing the judgments He would
bring against Judah’s foes (CH. 2), He turned His eyes on His guilty, squirming people (CH. 3). “What sorrow awaits rebellious, polluted Jerusalem,” God proclaimed (3:1 NLT). “They [are] still eager to act corruptly” (V. 7).

He’d seen the cold hearts of His people—their spiritual apathy, social injustice, and ugly greed—and He was bringing loving discipline. And it didn’t matter if the individuals were “leaders,” “judges,” “prophets”(VV. 3–4 NLT)—everyone was guilty before Him.

The apostle Paul wrote the following to believers in Jesus who persisted in sin, “You are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. . . . [God] will judge everyone according to what they have done” (ROMANS 2:5–6 NLT). So, in Jesus’ power, let’s live in a way that honors our holy, loving Father and leads to no remorse.

“나를 씻어 주세요!” 내 차에 그 글귀가 쓰여 있지 않았지만, 그렇다고 해도 이상하지 않았을 것입니다. 그래서 세차장으로 갔는데, 최근 폭설 이후 차에 들러붙은 도로의 소금 덩어리들을 씻어내고 싶어하는 것은 다른 운전자들도 마찬가지였습니다. 기다리는 줄은 길고 서비스는 느렸습니다. 하지만 기다린 가치가 있었습니다. 내 차는 깨끗해졌고, 서비스 지연에 대한 보상으로 무료로 세차했기 때문입니다!

다른 사람의 희생으로 깨끗함을 얻는 것, 그것이 예수 그리스도의 복음입니다. 하나님은 예수님의 죽음과 부활을 통해 우리의 죄를 용서해 주셨습니다. 우리 중 삶의 “더러움과 음침함”의 “때를 깨끗하게 씻어내고” 싶지 않은 사람이 있을까요? 우리의 이기적인 생각이나 행동으로 우리 자신이나 다른 사람들을 해롭게 하고, 우리에게서 하나님과의 화평을 빼앗아 갈 때도 그렇지 않을까요? 시편 51편은 다윗이 그의 인생에서 유혹을 물리치지 못했을 때의 외침입니다. 그의 죄에 대해 영적인 멘토인 나단과 대면했을 때(사무엘하 12 장 참조) 그는 “나를 씻어 주소서!”라고 기도했습니다. “우슬초로 나를 정결하게 하소서 내가 정하리이다. 나의 죄를 씻어 주소서 내가 눈보다 희리이다”(7절). 더러움과 죄책감을 느끼십니까? 다음 말씀을 기억하고 예수님께 나아가십시오. “우리가 우리의 죄를 자백하면 그는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요”(요한1서 1:9).

WASH ME!

“Wash me!” Though those words weren’t written on my vehicle, they could have been. So, off to the car wash I went, and so did other drivers who wanted relief from the grimy leftovers from salted roads following a recent snowfall. The lines were long, and the service was slow. But it was worth the wait. I left with a clean vehicle and, for compensation for service delay, the car wash was free of charge!

Getting cleaned at someone else’s expense—that’s the gospel of Jesus Christ. God, through the death and resurrection of Jesus, has provided forgiveness for our sins. Who among us hasn’t felt the need “to bathe” when the “dirt and grime” of life have clung to us? When we’re stained by selfish thoughts or actions that harm ourselves or others and rob us of peace with God? Psalm 51 is the cry of David when temptation had triumphed in his life. When confronted by a spiritual mentor about his sin (SEE 2 SAMUEL 12), he prayed a “Wash me!” prayer: “Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow” (V. 7). Feeling dirty and guilty? Make your way to Jesus and remember these words: ”If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 JOHN 1:9).

누가 찬양 받기에 합당한가?

부동산 중개인은 젊은 부부에게 나선형 계단에 넓은 침실, 단단한 나무 바닥, 고급 카펫, 거대한 세탁실과 잘 정돈된 사무실까지 갖춘 집을 보여주었습니다. 그 부부는 모퉁이를 돌 때마다 그 집의 아름다움에 대해 극찬했습니다. “우리에게 가장 좋은 집을 찾아 주셨어요. 이 집은 정말 멋져요!” 이에 중개인이 보인 반응은 그들이 생각하기에 약간 의외일 수 있지만 맞는 말이었습니다. “건축업자에게 당신이 칭찬했다고 전해드리겠습니다. 이 집 자체도, 이 집을 보여주는 사람도 아닌, 이 집을 지은 사람이 칭찬받을 자격이 있으니까요.”

부동산 중개인의 말은 히브리서 저자의 “집을 지은 자가 그 집보다 더욱 존귀함 같으니라”(3:3)는 말의 울림 같습니다. 히브리서 저자는 여기서 하나님의 아들 예수님의 신실함을 예언자 모세와 비교하고 있습니다(1-6절). 모세는 하나님과 대면하여 말하고 여호와의 형상을 볼 수 있는(민수기 12:8) 특권을 누렸지만, 여전히 하나님의 집을 지키는 ‘종’에 불과했습니다(히브리서 3:5). 창조주이신 그리스도(1:2, 10)는 신성한 “만물을 지으신 이”로서, 그리고 “하나님의 집을 맡은” 아들로서(3:4, 6) 영광을 받으시기에 합당하신 분입니다. 여기서 ‘하나님의 집’은 하나님의 백성을 말합니다.

우리가 하나님을 충실하게 섬길 때, 그 영광을 받으시기에 합당하신 분은 신성한 건축가이신 예수님이십니다. 하나님의 집인 우리가 받는 모든 칭송은 전적으로 하나님의 것입니다.

WHO DESERVES THE PRAISE?

From the spiral staircase to the expansive bedroom, from the hardwood floors to the plush carpeting, from the huge laundry room to the well-organized office, the realtor showed a potential home to the young couple. At every corner they turned, they raved about its beauty: “You’ve picked the best place for us. This house is amazing!” Then the realtor responded with something they thought a bit unusual yet true: “I’ll pass along your compliment to the builder. The one who built the house deserves the praise; not the house itself or the one who shows it off.”

The realtor’s words echo the writer of Hebrews: “The builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself” (3:3). The writer was comparing the faithfulness of Jesus, the Son of God, with the prophet Moses (VV. 1–6). Though Moses was privileged to speak to God face-to-face and to see His form (NUMBERS 12:8), he was still only “a servant” in the house of God (HEBREWS 3:5). Christ as the Creator (1:2, 10) deserves honor as the divine “builder of everything” and as the Son “over God’s house” (3:4, 6). God’s house is His people.

When we serve God faithfully, it’s Jesus the divine builder who deserves the honor. Any praise we, God’s house, receive ultimately belongs to Him.

어둠에서 빛으로

아카쉬는 암울한 우울증에서 벗어날 수가 없었습니다. 트럭 사고로 중상을 입고 서남아시아의 한 기독병원으로 이송되어 여덟 번이나 수술을 받은 후 골절은 치료되었지만 아무것도 먹을 수 없어서 우울증이 생겼습니다. 가족을 부양해왔던 그가 더 이상 일을 할 수 없게 되자 그의 삶은 점점 더 캄캄해져 갔습니다.

어느 날 한 방문객이 찾아와 아카쉬에게 그의 언어로 된 요한복음을 읽어주고 그를 위해 기도해 주었습니다. 하나님께서 예수님을 통해 용서와 구원이라는 선물을 무상으로 주셨다는 말에 감동하여 그는 하나님을 믿었습니다. 그러자 그의 우울증이 곧 사라졌습니다. 집에 돌아갔을 때 처음에는 그의 새로운 신앙을 가족들에게 말하는 것이 두려웠지만, 마침내 그는 가족들에게 예수님을 전했고, 그중 여섯 명이 주님을 믿게 되었습니다!

요한복음은 어두운 세상의 등불입니다. 그 안에는 “[예수를] 믿는 자마다 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이라”(3:16)는 구절이 있으며, “[예수님의] 말을 듣고 [하나님을] 믿는 자는 영생을 얻었고”(5:24)라는 내용도 있습니다. 그리고 “나는 생명의 떡이니 내게 오는 자는 결코 주리지 아니할 터이요”(6:35)라는 예수님의 말씀도 있습니다. 참으로 “진리를 따르는 자는 빛으로 나아옵니다”(3:21).

우리가 큰 문제에 직면해 있을지 모르지만 예수님은 그보다 더 크신 분입니다. 주님은 우리에게 “생명을... 풍성히”(10:10) 주려고 오셨습니다. 당신도 아카쉬처럼 세상의 소망이요 온 인류의 빛이신 예수님을 믿으시기를 바랍니다.

FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT

Nothing could pull Aakash out of his dark depression. Severely injured in a truck accident, he was taken to a missionary hospital in Southwest Asia. Eight operations repaired his broken bones, but he couldn’t eat. Depression set in. His family depended on him to provide, which he couldn’t do, so his world grew darker.

One day a visitor read to Aakash from the gospel of John in his language and prayed for him. Touched by the hope of God’s free gift of forgiveness and salvation through Jesus, he placed his faith in Him. His depression soon left. When he returned home, he was afraid at first to mention his newfound faith. Finally, though, he told his family about Jesus—and six of them trusted Him as well!

John’s gospel is a beacon of light in a world of darkness. In it we read that “whoever believes in [Jesus] shall not perish but have eternal life” (3:16). We discover that “whoever hears [Jesus’] word and believes [God] has eternal life” (5:24). And we hear Jesus say, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry” (6:35). Indeed, “whoever lives by the truth comes into the light” (3:21).

The troubles we face may be great, but Jesus is greater. He came to give us “life . . . to the full” (10:10). Like Aakash, may you place your faith in Jesus—the hope of the world and the light for all humanity.

데이비드 윌리스는 워터스톤스 서점 이층에 있다가 아래층으로 내려와 보니 불이 모두 꺼져 있고 문이 잠겼다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 서점에 갇힌 것입니다! 그는 어찌할 바를 모르다가 트위터에 글을 올렸습니다. “안녕하세요, 워터스톤스. 저는 지금 당신의 트라팔가 광장 서점 안에 두 시간째 갇혀 있습니다. 저를 좀 내보내 주세요.” 트위터에 글을 올리고 얼마되지 않아 그는 구조되었습니다.

곤경에 처했을 때 도움을 받을 방법이 있다는 것은 다행스러운 일입니다. 이사야는 우리로 말미암은 삶의 문제로 갇혔을 때 우리의 외침에 응답하시는 분이 있다고 말합니다. 이사야 선지자는 무책임하게 종교적 헌신을 실천하는 자들을 하나님께서 책망하셨다고 기록했습니다. 그들은 종교 활동을 하고 있었지만, 공허하고 자신의 잇속만 챙기는 의례들로 가난한 사람들을 억압하는 것을 감추고 있었습니다(이사야 58:1-7). 이런 행동들은 하나님을 기쁘시게 하지 못했습니다. 하나님은 그들에게서 눈을 돌리시고 그들의 기도를 들어주지 않으셨으며(1:15), 그들에게 회개하고 이웃을 돌보는 모습을 보이라고 하셨습니다(58:6-7). 그들이 이 말씀을 지키면 하나님께서 다음과 같이 하겠다고 약속하셨습니다. “네가 부를 때에는 나 여호와가 응답하겠고 네가 부르짖을

A CRY FOR HELP

David Willis had been upstairs in Waterstones Bookshop when he came downstairs and found the lights were turned off and the doors locked. He was trapped inside the store! Not knowing what else to do, he turned to Twitter and tweeted: “Hi @Waterstones. I’ve been locked inside of your Trafalgar Square bookstore for 2 hours now. Please let me out.” Not too long after his tweet, he was rescued.

It’s good to have a way to get help when we’re in trouble. Isaiah said there’s Someone who will answer our cries when we’re trapped in a problem of our own making. The prophet wrote that God had charged His people with practicing their religious devotion irresponsibly. They were going through the motions of religion but masking their oppression of the poor with empty and self-serving rituals (ISAIAH 58:1–7). This didn’t win divine favor. God hid His eyes from them and didn’t answer their prayers (1:15). He told them to repent and display outward acts of caring for others (58:6–7). If they did that, He told them, “You will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk” (V. 9).

Let’s get close to the poor, saying to them: “I am here.” For God hears our cries for help and says to us, “I am here.”
