실망감을 극복하기

오클라호마 주의 한 고등학교의 졸업반 학생들이 “인생에 기념이 될만한 여행”을 하려고 일 년 내내 돈을 모아 경비를 마련했습니다. 그런데 공항에 도착해보니 상당수 학생들이 가짜 항공사를 통해 비행기표를 구입했다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 학교의 한 행정 담당자는 “마음이 찢어질 듯 아프다”며 안타까움을 표현했습니다. 그러나 학생들은 기존의 계획을 변경해야 했음에도 불구하고 “주어진 상황에서 최선의 방법을 찾기로” 결정했습니다. 그리고 근처 명소에서 입장권을 기부 받고 이틀 동안 즐거운 시간을 보냈습니다.

계획이 좌절되거나 변경되면 실망스럽고 몹시 속상할 수 있습니다. 특히 그 계획에 시간이나 돈이나 정성을 쏟아 부었을 때에는 더욱 그렇습니다. 하나님을 위한 성전을 “건축할 마음”이 있었던 다윗 왕에게(역대상 28:2) 하나님께서 말씀하셨습니다. “너는 내 이름을 위하여 성전을 건축하지 못하리라... 네 아들 솔로몬 그가 내 성전을 건축하리라”(3, 6절). 그 말에 다윗은 실망하지 않고 자신을 이스라엘의 왕으로 택하신 하나님을 찬양하며 성전 건축 계획을 솔로몬에게 넘기고 성전을 완성하게 했습니다(11-13절). 그러면서 “너는 강하고 담대하게 이 일을 행하라... 여호와 하나님이 너와 함께 계시리라”(20절)라는 말로 솔로몬을 격려했습니다.

어떤 이유로든 계획했던 일이 어긋날 때 우리는 “[우리를] 돌보시는” (베드로전서 5:7) 하나님께 실망하는 마음을 가져갈 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 실망을 은혜로 다룰 수 있게 도와주실 것입니다.

DEALING WITH DISAPPOINTMENT

After raising money all year for a “trip of a lifetime,” seniors from an Oklahoma high school arrived at the airport to learn that many of them had purchased tickets from a bogus company posing as an airline. “It’s heartbreaking,” one school administrator said. Yet, even though they had to change their plans, the students decided to “make the most of it.” They enjoyed two days at nearby attractions, which donated the tickets.

Dealing with failed or changed plans can be disappointing or even heartbreaking. Especially when we’ve invested time, money, or emotion into the planning. King David “had it in [his] heart to build” a temple for God (1 CHRONICLES 28:2), but God told him: “You are not to build a house for my Name . . . . Solomon your son is the one who will build my house” (VV. 3, 6). David didn’t despair. He praised God for choosing him to be king over Israel, and he gave the plans for the temple to Solomon to complete (VV. 11–13). As he did, he encouraged him: “Be strong and courageous, and do the work . . . for the Lord God . . . is with you” (V. 20).

When our plans fall through, no matter the reason, we can bring our disappointment to God who “cares for [us]” (1 PETER 5:7). He will help us handle our disappointment with grace.

시련 속의 희망

예배가 끝난 후 목사님의 초청으로 래트리스가 회중 앞으로 나왔습니다. 회중에게 인사를 부탁받을 때만 해도 그녀가 그렇게 엄청난 경험과 놀라운 이야기를 하리라고는 아무도 기대하지 않았습니다. 켄터키에 살던 그녀는 2021년 12월 엄청난 토네이도로 가족 일곱 명을 잃고 이곳으로 이주해 왔습니다. “그래도 나는 하나님께서 나와 함께 하시기 때문에 웃을 수가 있습니다.”라고 그녀는 말했습니다. 시련의 상처가 담긴 그녀의 간증이었지만 그 간증은 나름대로의 어려움을 겪고 있는 사람들에게 큰 격려가 되었습니다.

예수님의 고난을 말해주는 시편 22편의 다윗의 이야기는 하나님께 버림받고(1절) 사람들의 비방과 조롱거리가 되며(6-8절) 약탈자들에게 둘러싸여 있다고(12-13절) 느끼는 사람의 이야기와 같습니다. 그러나 그는 쇠약하고 기진함 가운데서도(14-18절) 절망하지 않았습니다. “여호와여 멀리 하지 마옵소서 나의 힘이시여 속히 나를 도우소서”(19절). 우리가 현재 겪는 어려움도 다윗이나 래트리스의 것과는 다를 수 있어도 똑같이 현실 속의 이야기입니다. 그래서 24절의 말씀은 우리에게도 큰 의미가 있습니다. “그는 곤고한 자의 곤고를 멸시하거나 싫어하지 아니하시며... 그가 울부짖을 때에 들으셨도다.” 우리가 하나님의 도우심을 경험할 때 다른 사람들도 들을 수 있도록 그분의 선하심을 선포합시다(22절).

HUMBLED BUT HOPEFUL

At the pastor’s invitation at the end of the church service, Latriece made her way to the front. When she was invited to greet the congregation, no one was prepared for the weighty and wonderful words she spoke. She had relocated from Kentucky where in December 2021 devastating tornadoes had taken the lives of seven of her family members. “I can still smile because God’s with me,” she said. Though bruised by trial, her testimony was a powerful encouragement for those facing challenges of their own.

David’s words in Psalm 22 (which point to the sufferings of Jesus) are those of a battered man who felt forsaken by God (V. 1), despised and mocked by others (VV. 6–8), and surrounded by predators (VV. 12–13). He felt weak and drained (VV. 14–18)—but he wasn’t hopeless. “But you, Lord, do not be far from me. You are my strength; come quickly to help me” (V. 19). Your present challenge—
though likely not of the same variety as David’s or Latriece’s—is just as real. And the words of verse 24 are just as meaningful: “He has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; . . . but has listened to his cry for help.” And when we experience God’s help, let’s declare His goodness so others can hear of it (V. 22).

참 좋은 친구

몇 해 동안 보지 못했던 옛 친구를 만났습니다. 친구는 그 동안 암진단을 받고 치료를 받아왔는데 그가 사는 지역으로 갑작스럽게 갈 일이 생겨 다시 볼 수 있게 된 것입니다. 식당에 들어서자 우리 두 사람의 눈에는 눈물이 글썽거렸습니다. 참으로 오랜만에 만난 우리였는데 우리에게 죽음이 가까이 도사리고 있다는 사실이 인생의 덧없음을 느끼게 했습니다. 우리가 함께 했던 모험과 장난들, 웃음과 상실들, 그리고 무엇보다 서로 사랑했던 오랜 우정으로 눈물이 났습니다. 우리는 서로를 바라보며 뺨을 타고 흐르는 사랑의 눈물을 멈출 수가 없었습니다.

예수님도 우셨습니다. 요한복음이 그 순간을 기록하고 있는데, 유대인들이 “주여 와서 보옵소서”(11:34)라고 하여 예수님이 그의 좋은 친구 나사로의 무덤 앞에 서신 그때였습니다. 여기서 우리는 그리스도께서 우리 인간의 마음을 깊이 공유하시는 모습을 보여주는 구절을 볼 수 있습니다. “예수께서 눈물을 흘리시더라”(35절). 그 순간에 요한이 기록하거나 기록하지 못한 많은 일들이 일어나고 있었을 것입니다. 하지만 “그를 얼마나 사랑하셨는가”(36절)라고 유대인들이 예수님께 보인 반응이 모든 것을 잘 말해주고 있다고 믿습니다. 그 구절은 우리의 모든 연약함을 잘 아는 친구이신 예수님을 찬양하기에 충분한 이유가 됩니다. 예수님은 살과 피와 눈물이 있는 인간이셨습니다. 그리고 사랑하고 또 이해하시는 구세주이십니다.

WHAT A FRIEND

It had been a few years since my longtime friend and I had seen one another. During that time, he’d received a cancer diagnosis and started treatments. An unexpected trip to his state afforded me the chance to see him again. I walked into the restaurant, and tears filled both of our eyes. It’d been too long since we’d been in the same room, and now death crouched in the corner reminding us of the brevity of life. The tears in our eyes sprang from a long friendship filled with adventures and antics and laughter and loss—and love. So much love that it spilled out from the corners of our eyes at the sight of one another.

Jesus wept too. John’s gospel records that moment, after the Jews said, “Come and see, Lord” (11:34), and Jesus stood before the tomb of His good friend Lazarus. Then we read those two words that reveal to us the depths to which Christ shares our humanity: “Jesus wept” (V. 35). Was there much going on in that moment, things that John did and didn’t record? Yes. Yet I also believe the reaction of the Jews to Jesus is telling: “See how he loved him!” (V. 36). That line is more than sufficient grounds for us to stop and worship the Friend who knows our every weakness. Jesus was flesh and blood and tears. Jesus is the Savior who loves and understands.

마음 문을 열고 내어주라

작가인 파커 팔머는 한 졸업식 축사에서, 아무도 죽을 때에 “나는 평생을 나 중심으로, 나만 위해, 나만 지키며 산 것이 너무나 행복합니다.” 라고 하는 사람은 없다고 하면서 졸업생들에게 “마음 문을 열고 [자신을] 세상에 내어주라”고 권면했습니다.

그러나 파커는 이어 말하기를 이렇게 살려면 또한 “내가 얼마나 모르는게 많은지, 성공이 얼마나 어려운지를” 배워가야 한다고 했습니다. 세상을 섬기는 일에 자신을 내어놓으려면 언제나 “초보자의 마음”을 가지고 “미지의 세계에 몸을 던져, 거듭되는 실패도 두려워하지 않고, 다시 일어나 배우고 또 배우는 것”이 필요하다고 했습니다.

우리의 삶이 은혜의 기초 위에 세워질 때에만 용기를 가지고 두려움 없이 “마음 문을 열고 내어주는” 삶을 선택할 수 있습니다. 바울이 그의 제자 디모데에게 설명했듯이 우리를 구원하고 목적있는 삶으로 부르시는 것이 하나님의 은혜(디모데후서 1:9)라는 것을 기억할 때, 우리는 스스로를 자신있게 “불을 붙여”(6절, 새번역) 하나님의 선물로 살아갈 수 있게 됩니다. 성령의 “능력과 사랑과 절제”(7절)보다는 그저 소심하게 살고 싶은 마음이 생길 때 주님의 권능이 그것을 물리칠 수 있는 용기를 줍니다. 그리고 우리가 넘어질 때 일으켜 세워 주님의 사랑 안에서 삶의 기반을 평생 다져가게 하는 것도 바로 그분의 은혜입니다(13-14절).

OPENHEARTED GENEROSITY

No one ever died saying, “I’m so glad for the self-centered, selfserving, and self-protective life I lived,” author Parker Palmer said in a commencement address, urging graduates to “offer [themselves] to the world . . . with openhearted generosity.”

But, Parker continued, living this way would also meaning learning “how little you know and how easy it is to fail.” Offering themselves in service to the world would require cultivating a “beginner’s mind” to “walk straight into your not-knowing, and take the risk of failing and failing, again and again—then getting up to learn again and again.”

It’s only when our lives are built on a foundation of grace that we can find the courage to choose such a life of fearless “openhearted generosity.” As Paul explained to his protégé Timothy, we can confidently “fan into flame” (2 TIMOTHY 1:6) and live out of God’s gifting when we remember that it’s God’s grace that saves and calls us to a life of purpose (V. 9). It’s His power that gives us the courage to resist the temptation to live timidly in exchange for the Spirit’s “power, love and self-discipline” (V. 7). And it’s His grace that picks us up when we fall, so that we can continue a lifelong journey of grounding our lives in His love (VV. 13–14).

증인들

헨리 워즈워드 롱펠로우(1807-1882)는 “증인들”이라는 그의 시에서 침몰한 노예선에 대해 묘사하고 있습니다. 그는 “쇠사슬에 묶인 해골들” 을 주제로 쓰면서 이름도 없이 희생된 수많은 노예들을 애도했습니다. 마지막 구절은 이렇게 끝납니다. “이것이 노예들의 비애라/ 그들이 깊은 심연에서 올려다보고 있네/ 이름도 없는 무덤에서 울고 있네/ 우리가 이 일의 증인들이라!”

그러나 이 증인들은 누구에게 말을 하고 있나요? 그런 무언의 증언이 무슨 소용이 있을까요?

그런데 모든 것을 보시는 증인 한 분이 계십니다. 가인은 아벨을 죽이고 나서 아무 일도 없었던 것처럼 행동했습니다. 하나님을 무시하며 “내가 내 아우를 지키는 자니이까”라고 대답한 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 “네 아우의 핏소리가 땅에서부터 내게 호소하느니라 땅이 그 입을 벌려 네 손에서부터 네 아우의 피를 받았은즉 네가 땅에서 저주를 받으리라”(창세기 4:9-11)고 말씀하셨습니다.

가인의 이름은 하나의 경고로 이어져옵니다. 요한 사도는 “가인같이 하지 말라. 그는 악한 자에게 속하여 그 아우를 죽였다”고 경고했습니다 (요한1서 3:12). 아벨의 이름도 지금까지 이어져오지만 완전히 다른 의미를 담고 있습니다. 히브리서 기자는 “믿음으로 아벨은 가인보다 더 나은 제사를 하나님께 드림으로... 그 믿음으로써 지금도 말하느니라”(히브리서 11:4)라고 기록했습니다.

아벨은 지금도 말하고 있습니다! 오랫동안 잊힌 그 노예들의 뼈도 이처럼 말하고 있습니다. 우리는 그런 모든 피해자들을 기억하고, 압제를 볼 때마다 그에 반대해야 합니다. 하나님은 이 모든 것을 보고 계십니다. 하나님의 정의는 ‘반드시’ 승리할 것입니다.

WITNESSES

In his poem “The Witnesses,” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807–1882) described a sunken slave ship. As he wrote of “skeletons in chains,” Longfellow mourned slavery’s countless nameless victims. The concluding stanza reads, “These are the woes of Slaves, / They glare from the abyss; / They cry from unknown graves, / We are the Witnesses!”

But who do these witnesses speak to? Isn’t such silent testimony futile?

There is a Witness who sees it all. When Cain murdered Abel, he pretended nothing had happened. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” he said dismissively to God. But God said, “Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand” (GENESIS 4:9–11).

Cain’s name lives on as a warning. “Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother,” John the disciple cautioned (1 JOHN 3:12). Abel’s name lives on too, but in a dramatically different way. “By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did,” said the writer of Hebrews. “By faith Abel still speaks” (HEBREWS 11:4).

Abel still speaks! So do the bones of those long-forgotten slaves. We do well to remember all such victims, and to oppose oppression wherever we see it. God sees it all. His justice will triumph.

하나님의 영원한 교회

주일예배가 막 끝나갈 무렵 한 젊은 엄마가 두 아이를 데리고 교회에 도착해 “교회가 벌써 끝났나요?”라고 물었습니다. 그러자 예배 위원이 그녀에게 근처 교회에서는 주일 예배를 두 번 드리는데 두 번째 예배가 곧 시작될 거라고 말해주었습니다. 거기까지 차로 데려다 주기를 원하는지 묻자 그 젊은 엄마는 그래 달라고 하면서 몇 구역 떨어진 다른 교회로 갈 수 있게 되어 고마워하는 것 같았습니다. 예배 위원은 나중에 그녀의 말을 곰곰이 생각해 보며 이런 결론에 이르렀습니다. “교회가 끝났냐고요? 천만에요. 하나님의 교회는 영원합니다.”

교회는 부서지기 쉬운 “건물”이 아닙니다. 바울은 교회를 하나님의 신실한 가족으로 설명했습니다. “너희는 하나님의 권속이라. 너희는 사도들과 선지자들의 터 위에 세우심을 입은 자라 그리스도 예수께서 친히 모퉁잇돌이 되셨느니라 그의 안에서 건물마다 서로 연결하여 주 안에서 성전이 되어 가고 너희도 성령 안에서 하나님이 거하실 처소가 되기 위하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 함께 지어져 가느니라”(에베소서 2:19-22).

예수님께서 친히 그의 영원한 교회를 세우셨습니다. 예수님은 교회에 어떤 도전이나 어려움이 닥쳐도 “음부의 권세가 이기지 못하리라”(마태복음 16:18)고 선언하셨습니다.

이렇게 담대한 안목으로 교회를 바라볼 때 우리는 지역 교회들, 곧 우리 자신이 “그리스도 예수 안에서 영광이 대대로 영원무궁하도록”(에베소서 3:21) 지어져 가는 하나님의 우주적인 교회의 일원임을 깨닫게 됩니다.

GOD’S ETERNAL CHURCH

“Is church over?” asked a young mother arriving at our church with two children in tow just as the Sunday service was ending. But a greeter told her that a church nearby offered two Sunday services and the second would start soon. Would she like a ride there? The young mother said yes and seemed grateful to travel the few blocks to the other church. Reflecting later, the greeter came to this conclusion: “Is church over? Never. God’s church goes on forever.”

The church isn’t a fragile “building.” It’s the faithful family of God who are “members of his household,” wrote Paul, “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit” (EPHESIANS 2:19–22).

Jesus Himself established His church for eternity. He declared that despite challenges or troubles facing His church, “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (MATTHEW 16:18 KJV).

Through this empowering lens, we can see our local churches— all of us—as a part of God’s universal church, being built “in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!” (EPHESIANS 3:21).

권면의 은사

“벌들이 떼를 짓고 있어요!” 아내가 문 안으로 머리만 보이면서 양봉하는 사람이라면 아무도 원치 않을 소식을 전해주었습니다. 밖으로 뛰어나와 보니 수천 마리나 되는 벌들이 벌집에서 나와 큰 소나무 위로 날아오르더니 영영 돌아오질 않았습니다.

일주일이 넘도록 내린 폭우로 벌통을 점검하지 못했던 나는 벌통속의 벌들이 떼를 이루어 나갈 거라는 낌새를 미처 알아차리지 못했습니다. 그러다 폭풍이 그친 아침에 벌들이 벌통을 빠져나간 것입니다. 그 벌들은 새롭게 만들어진 건강한 집단이었는데, 알고보니 벌들이 새 집단을 또 하나 만들려고 집단을 나누고 있었던 것입니다. 한 경험 많은 양봉가가 실망하는 나의 모습을 보고는 “너무 자책하지 말게. 누구나 겪는 일이니까!” 하며 웃으며 달래주었습니다.

권면은 사람의 마음을 끄는 은사입니다. 다윗이 자기 목숨을 노리고 뒤를 쫓는 사울 때문에 낙심하자 사울의 아들 요나단은 다윗을 이렇게 격려해 주었습니다. “두려워하지 말라 내 아버지 사울의 손이 네게 미치지 못할 것이요 너는 이스라엘 왕이 되고 나는 네 다음이 될 것을 내 아버지 사울도 안다” (사무엘상 23:17).

왕위계승 서열 1위인 사람이 참으로 자신을 양보하며 한 말이었습니다. 아마도 요나단은 하나님께서 다윗과 함께 하심을 알고 겸손한 믿음의 마음으로 그렇게 말했을 것입니다.

우리들 곁 어디에나 격려가 필요한 사람들이 있습니다. 우리가 하나님 앞에 자신을 낮추고 우리를 통해 그들을 사랑해 달라고 간구할 때 하나님은 우리를 도와 그들을 돕게 하실 것입니다.

THE GIFT OF ENCOURAGEMENT

“Your bees are swarming!” My wife stuck her head inside the door and gave me news no beekeeper wants to hear. I ran outside to see thousands of bees flying up from the hive to the top of a tall pine, never to return.

I was a little behind in reading the clues that the hive was about to swarm; more than a week of storms had hampered my inspections. The morning the storms ended, the bees left. The colony was new and healthy, and the bees were actually dividing the colony to start a new one. “Don’t be hard on yourself,” an experienced beekeeper told me cheerfully after seeing my disappointment. “This can happen to anyone!”

Encouragement is a winsome gift. When David was disheartened because Saul was pursuing him to take his life, Saul’s son Jonathan encouraged David. “Don’t be afraid,” Jonathan said. “My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this” (1 SAMUEL 23:17).

Those are surprisingly selfless words from someone next in line to the throne. It’s likely Jonathan recognized that God was with David, so he spoke out of a humble heart of faith.

All around us are people who need encouragement. God will help us help them as we humble ourselves before Him and ask Him to love them through us.

열린 공간을 찾아서

리차드 스웬슨 박사는 자신의 저서 ‘여유’에서 이렇게 쓰고 있습니다. “우리에게는 숨 쉴 공간이 있어야 합니다. 자유롭게 생각할 수 있고 치유도 받을 수 있어야 합니다. 그런데 우리의 인간관계는 지금 삶의 속도에 눌려 굶어 죽어가고 있습니다... 우리의 아이들은 좋은 의도라며 과속하는 우리에게 치어 다친 채 땅바닥에 쓰러져 있습니다. 하나님은 이제 과로를 옹호하시나요? 사람들을 더 이상 잔잔한 물가로 인도하지 않으시나요? 과거의 그 넓은 공간들은 누가 빼앗아갔으며, 우리는 그 공간들을 어떻게 되찾을 수 있을까요?” 스웬슨은 우리의 삶에 하나님 안에서 쉬고 하나님을 만날 수 있는 조용하고 비옥한 “땅”이 필요하다고 말합니다.

그의 말이 마음에 울림을 줍니까? 모세는 열린 공간을 찾는 모습을 자기 삶으로 보여주었습니다. “고집이 세고 반항하는”(출애굽기 33:5) 백성들을 이끌었던 그는 종종 뒤로 물러나 하나님 앞에서 안식하며 인도하심을 구했습니다. 그리고 그의 “회막”(7절)에서 “사람이 자기의 친구와 이야기함 같이 여호와께서는 모세와 대면하여 말씀하셨습니다”(11절). 예수님도 “자주 조용한 곳으로 가셔서 기도하셨습니다”(누가복음 5:16, 현대인의 성경). 예수님과 모세는 하나님 아버지와 단 둘이 시간을 보내는 것의 중요함을 잘 알았습니다.

우리도 삶에 여유를 확보할 필요가 있습니다. 하나님 앞에서 안식하며 보낼 수 있는 넓고 열린 공간이 필요합니다. 하나님과 함께 시간을 보내면 우리가 더 나은 결정을 하는데 도움이 되며, 건강한 삶의 여백과 경계를 확보해 하나님과 다른 사람들을 더 잘 사랑할 수 있는 여력이 생길 것입니다. 오늘 열린 공간에서 하나님을 찾으십시다.

FINDING OPEN SPACES

In his book Margin, Dr. Richard Swenson writes, “We must have some room to breathe. We need freedom to think and permission to heal. Our relationships are being starved to death by velocity. . . . Our children lay wounded on the ground, run over by our high-speed good intentions. Is God now pro-exhaustion? Doesn’t He lead people beside the still waters anymore? Who plundered those wide-open spaces of the past, and how can we get them back?” Swenson says we need some quiet, fertile “land” in life where we can rest in God and meet with Him.

Does that resonate? Seeking open spaces is something Moses lived out well. Leading a nation of “stubborn and rebellious” people (EXODUS 33:5 NLT), he often withdrew to find rest and guidance in God’s presence. And in his “tent of meeting” (V. 7), “the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend” (V. 11). Jesus also “often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (LUKE 5:16). Both He and Moses realized the importance of spending time alone with the Father.

We too need to build margin into our lives, some wide and open spaces spent in rest and in God’s presence. Spending time with Him will help us make better decisions—creating healthier margins and boundaries in our life so we have the bandwidth available to love Him and others well. Let’s seek God in open spaces today.

그리스도의 능력

2013년에 약 600명의 사람들이 공중 곡예사 닉 월렌다가 그랜드 캐년 근처의 폭 1500피트(약 450미터)의 협곡을 가로질러 줄타기를 하는 것을 현장에서 지켜보았습니다. 월렌다는 2인치(5센티미터) 두께의 쇠 밧줄 위로 발을 내디뎠을 때 그의 머리 위의 카메라가 아래 계곡을 비추자 그 광경을 보고 예수님께 감사했습니다. 그는 마치 길을 거니는 것처럼 차분하게 협곡을 가로질러 걸으면서 기도하며 예수님을 찬양했습니다. 바람이 세게 불면 걸음을 멈추고 웅크렸다가 다시 일어서 균형을 되찾으면서 “밧줄을 진정시켜 주신” 하나님께 감사했습니다. 줄타기를 하며 한발 한발 뗄 때마다 그는 전 세계에서 영상을 보고 있는 모든 사람들에게 그리스도의 능력에 의지하는 자신의 모습을 보여주었습니다.

갈릴리 바다에서 광풍이 불어 파도가 덮쳤을 때 제자들은 두려워하여 주님께 도움을 간구했습니다(마가복음 4:35-38). 예수님이 바람을 잔잔하게 하시자 제자들은 예수님이 바람과 그 밖의 모든 것을 주관하신다는 것을 알게 되었습니다(39-41절). 그리고 조금씩 주님을 더 신뢰하는 법을 배워 나갔습니다. 제자들은 직접 경험한 일들을 통해 예수님이 세밀한 데까지 돌보시며, 놀라운 능력을 가지신 분임을 사람들에게 말해줄 수 있었습니다.

인생의 폭풍우 속에서나 고난의 깊은 골짜기를 신뢰의 밧줄을 타고 걸어갈 때 우리도 그리스도의 능력을 믿는 확신 있는 믿음을 보여줄 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 믿음의 걸음을 사용하여 다른 사람들을 감동시켜 하나님께 소망을 두게 하실 것입니다.

THE POWER OF CHRIST

In 2013, about six hundred on-site spectators watched aerialist Nik Wallenda walk on a tightrope across a 1500-foot-wide gorge near the Grand Canyon. Wallenda stepped onto the 2-inch-thick steel cable and thanked Jesus for the view as his head camera pointed toward the valley below. He prayed and praised Jesus as he walked across the gorge as calmly as if he was strolling on a sidewalk. When the wind became treacherous, he stopped and crouched. He rose and regained his balance, thanking God for “calming that cable.” With every step on that tightrope, he displayed his dependence on the power of Christ to everyone listening then and now as the video is watched across the world.

When the winds of a storm caused waves to overtake the disciples on the sea of Galilee, fear seeped through their pleas for help (MARK 4:35–38). After Jesus stilled the squall, they knew He controlled the winds and everything else (VV. 39–41). Slowly they learned to grow in their trust of Him. Their personal experiences could help others recognize Jesus’ intimate availability and extraordinary might.

As we experience life’s storms or walk on the tightropes of trust stretched over the deep valleys of affliction, we can demonstrate confident faith in the power of Christ. God will use our faith-walk to inspire others to hope in Him.

예배라는 축제

사람들은 대규모 행사에 참석하면서 놀라운 변화를 경험하기도 합니다. 연구원 다니엘 유드킨과 그의 동료들은 영국과 미국에서 여러 날에 걸친 행사에서 1,200명이 넘는 사람들과 만나고 나서, 대규모 축제는 우리의 가치 기준에 영향을 줄 수 있고 나아가 자기가 가진 것을 다른 사람들과 나누려는 마음에도 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그들의 연구에 따르면 참석자의 63퍼센트가 축제를 통해 “변화되는” 경험을 했으며, 이로 인해 인간에 대한 친근감이 더 생기고 친구나 가족, 나아가 전혀 모르는 사람에게까지 관대해지는 느낌을 갖게 되었다고 합니다.

그러나 우리가 하나님을 경배하기 위해 함께 모일 때에는 단순히 세상의 축제에서 얻는 사회적 “변화” 이상의 것을 경험할 수 있는데, 그것은 바로 하나님과 교통하는 것입니다. 구약 시대의 하나님의 백성들도 연중에 예루살렘에 모여 영적인 예배의식으로 하나님을 기념할 때 분명 하나님과 교통하는 것을 경험했을 것입니다. 그들은 일년에 세 번 성전에서 이루어지는 “무교절과 칠칠절과 초막절” 축제에 참석하기 위해 오늘날보다 훨씬 힘든 여행을 했습니다(신명기 16:16). 이 행사들은 가족과 종, 나그네와 다른 사람들이 함께 “여호와 앞에서” 엄숙하게 기념하고 예배하며 기뻐하는 시간이었습니다 (11절).

우리도 예배로 함께 모여 계속 주님을 기뻐하며 그분의 신실하심을 믿을 수 있도록 서로 도와줍시다.

FESTIVALS OF WORSHIP

Attending a large event might change you in a surprising way. After interacting with more than 1,200 people at multiday gatherings in the UK and US, researcher Daniel Yudkin and his colleagues learned that large festivals can impact our moral compass and even affect our willingness to share resources with others. Their research found that 63 percent of attendees had a “transformative” experience at the festival that also left them feeling more connected to humanity and more generous toward friends, family, and even complete strangers.

When we gather with others to worship God, however, we can experience more than merely the social “transformation” of a secular festival; we commune with God Himself. God’s people undoubtedly experienced that connection to Him when they gathered in Jerusalem in ancient times for their sacred festivals throughout the year. They traveled—without modern conveniences— to be present at the temple three times a year for “the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Weeks and the Festival of Tabernacles” (DEUTERONOMY 16:16). These gatherings were times of solemn remembrance, worship, and rejoicing “before the Lord” with family, servants, foreigners, and others (V. 11).

Let’s gather with others for worship to help one another to continue to enjoy Him and trust in His faithfulness.
