나는 무명인입니다! 당신은 누구세요?

“나는 무명인입니다! 당신은 누구세요?”로 시작되는 시에서 에밀리 디킨슨은 사람들이 “유명인”이 되기 위해 기울이는 모든 노력에 짖궂게 도전하면서, 오히려 행복한 익명성이 주는 즐거운 자유를 옹호합니다. “얼마나 황량할까요? 유명인이 된다는 건! 얼마나 눈에 띌까요? 마치 개구리처럼 / 기나긴 유월 내내 감탄하는 늪지에 대고 / 자기 이름을 외처댄다는 것은!”

“유명인”이 되고자 하는 것을 포기하는 데서 오는 자유는 어떤 면에서 바울 사도의 증언을 떠올려줍니다. 바울은 예수님을 만나기 전에 분명 “육적인 것을 신뢰할 만한 이유”(빌립보서 3:4, 현대인의 성경)가 되었던, 겉으로 보기에 인상적인 종교 자격증들을 많이 가지고 있었습니다.

그러나 예수님을 만나면서 모든 것이 바뀌었습니다. 바울은 그리스도의 희생적인 사랑에 비추어 볼 때 자신의 종교적인 성취가 얼마나 보잘것 없는 것인지를 깨닫고 이렇게 고백했습니다. “모든 것을 해로 여김은 내 주 예수 그리스도를 아는 지식이 가장 고상함을 인함이라... 내가 그것들을 배설물로 여김은 그리스도를 얻으려 함이라”(8절). 남아있는 그의 유일한 포부는 “그리스도와 그 부활의 권능과 그 고난에 참여함을 알고자 하여 그의 죽으심을 본받는”(10절) 것이었습니다.

우리가 “유명인”이 되려고 스스로 애쓰는 것은 참으로 서글픈 일입니다. 그러나 예수님을 알고, 자신을 내어주신 주님의 사랑과 생명 안에서 우리 자신을 버리게 될 때, 우리는 우리 자신을 다시 찾게 되며(9절) 마침내는 자유롭고 온전하게 됩니다.

사랑의 하나님, 하나님의 사랑을 받고 인정을 받기 위해 제가 ‘유명인’이 되려고 애쓸 필요가 없어서 감사합니다.

I’M NOBODY! WHO ARE YOU?

In a poem that begins, “I’m nobody! Who are you?” Emily Dickinson playfully challenges all the effort people tend to put into being “somebody,” advocating instead for the joyful freedom of blissful anonymity. For “How dreary – to be – Somebody! How public – like a Frog – / To tell one’s name – the livelong June / To an admiring Bog!”

Finding freedom in letting go of the need to be “somebody” in some ways echoes the testimony of the apostle Paul. Before he met Christ, Paul had a long list of seemingly impressive religious credentials, apparent “reasons to put confidence in the flesh” (PHILIPPIANS 3:4).

But encountering Jesus changed everything. When Paul saw how hollow his religious achievements were in light of Christ’s sacrificial love, he confessed, “I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord . . . . I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ” (V. 8). His only remaining ambition was “to know Christ . . . the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death” (V. 10).

It’s dreary, indeed, to attempt on our own to become “somebody.” But, to know Jesus, to lose ourselves in His self-giving love and life, is to find ourselves again (V. 9), finally free and whole.

“모든 일이 다 나를 괴롭게만 하는구나”

“오늘 아침 나는 엄청난 돈을 가졌다고 생각했는데, 지금은 내게 단돈 1달러라도 있을지 모르겠습니다.” 자기 사업 파트너로부터 평생 모은 돈을 사기 당한 그날, 전 미국 대통령 율리시스 그랜트가 한 말입니다. 그리고 몇 달 후, 그랜트는 불치의 암 진단을 받았습니다. 가족을 부양할 문제를 걱정했던 그는 작가 마크 트웨인이 제안한 자신의 회고록 출판을 수락했고, 죽기 1주일 전에 완성했습니다.

성경은 이런 험난한 역경에 직면했던 또 다른 인물에 대해 우리에게 말해주고 있습니다. 야곱은 그의 아들 요셉이 “악한 짐승”에게 물려 “찢겨 죽었을” 것이라고 믿었습니다(창세기 37:33). 그런 후 그의 아들 시므온이 외국에 포로로 잡혀 있자 막내 아들 베냐민마저 빼앗길까 두려워했습니다. 그는 아주 낙심하여 “모든 일이 다 나를 괴롭게만 하는구나”(42:36, 현대인의 성경)라며 울부짖었습니다.

“EVERYTHING IS AGAINST ME”

“This morning I thought I was worth a great deal of money; now I don’t know that I have a dollar.” Former US president Ulysses S. Grant said those words the day he was swindled out of his life’s savings by a business partner. Months later, Grant was diagnosed with incurable cancer. Concerned about providing for his family, he accepted an offer from author Mark Twain to publish his memoirs, which he completed a week before he died.

The Bible tells us of another person who faced grave hardships. Jacob believed his son Joseph had been “torn to pieces” by a “ferocious animal” (GENESIS 37:33). Then his son Simeon was held captive in a foreign country, and Jacob feared his son Benjamin would be taken from him as well. Overcome, he cried out, “Everything is against me!” (42:36).

But it wasn’t. Little did Jacob know that his son Joseph was very much alive and that God was at work “behind the scenes” to restore his family. Their story illustrates how He can be trusted even when we can’t see His hand in our circumstances.

Grant’s memoirs proved to be a great success and his family was well cared for. Though he didn’t live to see it, his wife did. Our vision is limited, but God’s isn’t. And with Jesus as our hope, “if God is for us, who can be against us?” (ROMANS 8:31). May we place our trust in Him today.

극진한 친절

패스트푸드점 직원인 케빈 포드는 27년간 한 번도 본인의 근무시간에 빠진 적이 없었습니다. 수십 년간의 성실한 근무를 기념하여 변변찮은 선물을 받았음에도 그가 겸손하게 감사하는 영상이 공개되자 수천 명의 사람들이 앞다투어 그에게 친절을 베풀었습니다. 한 주 만에 25만 달러의 기금이 모아지자 그는 감격하며 말했습니다. “꿈만 같아요. 꿈이 이루어졌어요.”

포로로 잡혀간 유다 왕 여호야긴도 극진한 친절을 입었습니다. 그는 37년 동안 감옥에 갇혀 있다가 바벨론 왕의 자비로 풀려났습니다. “[왕이] 그를 감옥에서 풀어주었더라 그에게 친절하게 말하고 그의 자리를 그와 함께 바벨론에 있는 왕들의 자리보다 높이고”(예레미야 52:31-32). 여호야긴은 새로운 지위와 새로운 옷, 그리고 새로운 집을 받았습니다. 바벨론 왕이 그의 새로운 삶을 위해 모든 것을 제공해주었습니다.

EXTREME KINDNESS

Fast-food restaurant worker Kevin Ford hadn’t missed a shift in twenty-seven years. After a video surfaced showing his humble gratitude for a modest gift he received to commemorate his decades of service, thousands of people rallied together to show kindness to him. “It’s like a dream, a dream come true,” he said when a fundraising effort brought in $250,000 in just over a week.

Jehoiachin, the exiled king of Judah, was also the recipient of extreme kindness. He’d been incarcerated for thirty-seven years before the benevolence of the Babylonian king resulted in his release. “[The king] freed him from prison. He spoke kindly to him and gave him a seat of honor higher than those of the other kings who were with him in Babylon” (JEREMIAH 52:31–32). Jehoiachin was given a new position, new clothes, and a new residence. His new life was fully funded by the king.

This story pictures what happens spiritually when, out of no contributions from themselves or others, people who believe in Jesus’ death and resurrection are rescued from their estrangement from God. They’re brought from darkness and death into light and life; they’re brought into the family of God because of the extreme kindness of God.

‘축복’ 글자가 쓰인 마스크

코로나 대유행 기간 중 요구되었던 마스크 착용 의무가 완화되면서, 딸의 학교처럼 아직도 마스크 착용이 요구되는 곳에서 마스크를 찾아 쓸 수 있도록 미리 준비해 두지 못해 어려움을 겪었습니다. 어느 날 그때도 마스크가 필요했는데 차 안에는 마스크가 하나밖에 없었습니다. 하필이면 그것도 앞면에 ‘축복’이라는 글자가 찍힌 마스크여서 쓰기를 꺼려하던 것이었습니다.

나는 아무런 글귀도 없는 마스크를 더 잘 쓰는데, 그 마스크에 쓰인 ‘축복’이라는 말이 너무 남용되고 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그러나 다른 선택의 여지가 없어서 나는 마지못해 그 마스크를 썼습니다. 그런데 새로운 학교 안내 직원에게 거의 짜증을 낼 뻔하다가 어느 정도는 그 마스크에 적힌 단어 때문에 참을 수 있었습니다. 내 입에 ‘축복’이라는 단어를 써붙이고 돌아다니면서 복잡한 학교 시스템을 이해하려고 애쓰는 사람에게 짜증을 내는, 그런 위선자처럼 보이고 싶지 않았던 것입니다.

내 마스크에 쓰인 글자가 내가 그리스도의 증인임을 깨닫게 해주긴 했지만, 실제로 내 마음속에 새겨진 성경구절들이 다른 사람들에게 인내해야 한다는 사실을 진정 깨닫게 해주는 것이 되어야 합니다. 바울은 고린도 교인들에게 이렇게 썼습니다. “너희는... 그리스도의 편지니 이는 먹으로 쓴 것이 아니요 오직 살아 계신 하나님의 영으로 한 것이며 또 돌판에 쓴 것이 아니요 오직 육의 마음판에 쓴 것이라”(고린도후서 3:3). “생명을 주는”(6절, 현대인의 성경) 성령님이 우리가 “사랑과 희락과 화평”, 그리고 “오래 참음” 으로 살도록 도와주실 수 있습니다(갈라디아서 5:22). 우리는 우리 안에 계신 주님으로 인해 진정으로 ‘축복’받았습니다!

THE BLESSED MASK

As the mask mandate requirements during the pandemic loosened, I struggled to remember to keep a mask handy for where they were still required—like my daughter’s school. One day when I needed a mask, I found just one in my car: the one I avoided wearing because it had blessed written across the front.

I prefer to wear masks without messages, and I believe that the word on the mask I found is overused. But I had no choice, so I reluctantly put the mask on. And when I nearly showed my annoyance with a new receptionist at the school, I caught myself, partly because of the word on my mask. I didn’t want to look like a hypocrite, walking around with blessed scrawled across my mouth while showing impatience to a person trying to figure out a complicated system.

Though the letters on my mask reminded me of my witness for Christ, the words of Scripture in my heart should be a true reminder to be patient with others. As Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “You are a letter from Christ, . . . written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts” (2 CORINTHIANS 3:3). The Holy Spirit who “gives life” (V. 6), can help us live out “love, joy, peace” and, yes, “patience” (GALATIANS 5:22). We’re truly blessed by His presence within us!

하나님 알기

아일랜드를 방문했을 때 나는 클로버가 수많은 곳에 장식으로 쓰이고 있는 것을 보고 아주 놀랐습니다. 세 잎을 지닌 작은 녹색 식물의 문양은 어느 가게를 가든 옷이나 모자, 보석 등, 거의 모든 것에서 쉽게 볼 수 있었습니다.

세 잎 클로버는 단지 아일랜드 전역에 널려있는 식물이라는 사실 말고도, 하나님이 성부와 성자, 성령이라는 뚜렷한 세 인격으로 영원히 존재하시는 한 분 하나님이라는, 역사적 기독교 신앙인 삼위일체를 쉽게 설명하는 상징으로 여러 세대에 걸쳐 사용되어 왔습니다. 삼위일체에 대한 인간의 어떤 설명도 적절하지 않지만, 클로버는 같은 물질로 이루어진 세 개의 뚜렷한 잎을 가진 하나의 식물이라는 점에서 설명하기에 아주 도움이 되는 상징입니다.

‘삼위일체’라는 단어는 성경에 나오지 않습니다. 그러나 우리는 삼위일체의 세 인격이 모두 동시에 나타나는 성경구절들에서 그 신학적인 진리를 명확히 알 수 있습니다. 성자 예수님이 세례받으실 때 성령 하나님이 하늘에서 “비둘기 같이” 내려오시는 것을 보며, 성부 하나님이 “너는 내 아들이라”고 말씀하십니다(마가복음 1:10-11).

예수님을 믿는 아일랜드 신자들은 사람들이 하나님을 알도록 도움을 주고 싶어 클로버를 사용했습니다. 우리가 삼위일체의 아름다움을 더 온전히 이해하게 될 때, 하나님을 아는데 도움이 되고 “영과 진리로”(요한복음 4:24) 하나님을 예배하는 능력이 깊어지게 됩니다.

TO KNOW GOD

On a visit to Ireland, I was overwhelmed by the abundance of decorative shamrocks. The little green, three-leafed plant could be found in every store on seemingly everything— clothing, hats, jewelry, and more!

More than just a prolific plant across Ireland, the shamrock was embraced for generations as a simple way to explain the Trinity, the historic Christian belief that God is One essence who eternally exists in three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. While all human explanations of the Trinity are inadequate, the shamrock is a helpful symbol because it’s one plant made of the same substance with three distinct leaves.

The word Trinity isn’t found in Scripture, but it summarizes the theological truth we see explicit in passages where all three persons of the Trinity are present at the same time. When Jesus, God the Son, is baptized, God the Spirit is seen coming down from heaven “like a dove,” and God the Father’s voice is heard saying, “You are my Son” (MARK 1:10–11).

Irish believers in Jesus used the shamrock because they wanted to help people know God. As we more fully understand the beauty of the Trinity, it helps us know God and deepens our ability to worship Him “in the Spirit and in truth” (JOHN 4:24).

하나님의 서사시

1968년 7월 12일자 ‘라이프’ 잡지 표지에 (내전 당시 나이지리아에 존재했던) 비아프라라는 나라에서 굶어 죽어가는 아이들의 참혹한 사진이 실렸습니다. 한 남자 아이가 괴로워하며 그 잡지 한 부를 목사에게 들고 가서 물었습니다. “하나님께서 이런 상황을 알고 계실까요?” “너는 이해 못하겠지만, 그래, 하나님은 알고 계시단다.”라고 목사는 대답했습니다. 그 소년은 그런 하나님에게는 관심이 없다고 말하며 밖으로 걸어나갔습니다.

이런 질문은 어린이들뿐 아니라 우리 모두를 혼란스럽게 합니다. 하나님은 신비할 정도로 모든 것을 알고 계신다는 것을 믿는 나는 그 소년이 이전 비아프라와 같은 나라에서도 하나님이 계속해서 쓰고 계셨던 서사시에 대해 들을 수 있었기를 바래 봅니다.

예수님은 고난으로부터 그들을 보호해 주실 거라고 믿고 따르는 사람들에게 오히려 “세상에서 너희가 환난을 당하리라”고 말씀하셨습니다. 하지만 예수님이 하신 말씀은 이런 악들이 결국에는 없어지리라는 약속이었습니다. 사실 주님은 이미 “세상을 이기셨습니다”(요한복음 16:33). 그래서 하나님이 쓰시는 그 서사시의 마지막 장에 이르면 모든 불의가 없어지고 모든 고통이 치유될 것입니다.

상상도 할 수 없는 모든 악들을 다 멸하시고 모든 잘못을 바로잡으시는 하나님의 이야기는 창세기부터 요한계시록까지 자세히 나타나 있습니다. 그 이야기는 의심할 여지 없이 우리에게 관심을 갖으신 사랑의 하나님을 잘 보여줍니다. 예수님은 “이것을 너희에게 이르는 것은 너희로 내 안에서 평안을 누리게 하려 함이라”(33절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 오늘 우리 모두 그분의 평강과 임재 안에서 안식할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

GOD’S EPIC STORY

Life magazine’s July 12, 1968, cover displayed a horrifying photograph of starving children from Biafra (in Nigeria during a civil war). A young boy, distressed, took a copy of the magazine to a pastor and asked, “Does God know about this?” The pastor replied, “I know you don’t understand, but, yes, God knows about that.” The boy walked out, declaring he was uninterested in such a God.

These questions disturb not only children but all of us. Alongside an affirmation of God’s mysterious knowledge, I wish that boy had heard about the epic story God is continuing to write, even in places like the former nation of Biafra.

Jesus unfolded this story for His followers, those who assumed He’d shield them from hardship. Christ told them instead that “in this world you will have trouble.” What Jesus did offer, however, was His promise that these evils weren’t the end. In fact, He’d already “overcome the world” (JOHN 16:33). And in God’s final chapter, every injustice will be undone, every suffering healed.

Genesis to Revelation recounts the story of God destroying every unthinkable evil, making every wrong right. The story presents the loving One whose interest in us is unquestioned. Jesus said to His disciples, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace” (V. 33). May we rest in His peace and presence today.

아마도 브라이언과 같이 뛰겠다고 하지 말았어야 했나 봅니다. 거기는 외국인데다 어디로, 얼마나 가는 건지, 또 지형은 어떤지 전혀 몰랐습니다. 더구나 브라이언은 빨리 달렸습니다. 그를 따라 가려다 발목을 삐지는 않을까? 그가 길을 안다는 것만 믿고 달려도 되나? 우리가 출발하고 나서 내 걱정은 더욱 커졌습니다. 울창한 숲으로 난 길은 구불구불하고 땅이 고르지 못해 험했습니다. 그러나 고마운 것은 브라이언이 나를 챙기느라 계속 돌아보며 앞에 있는 험한 부분들을 미리 알려준 것입니다.

아마도 가나안에서의 아브라함이나 광야에서의 이스라엘 백성들, 복음 전도를 다녔던 예수님의 제자들 같은 성경 시대의 사람들이 낯선 곳에 들어갈 때 느꼈을 감정이 바로 이와 같았을 것입니다. 그들은 여행길이 매우 힘들 것이라는 것 외에는 다른 아무런 정보도 없었습니다. 그러나 그들에게는 그 길을 미리 아시고 인도하시는 누군가가 계셨습니다. 하나님께서 감당할 힘을 주시고 돌보신다는 것을 믿어야 했습니다. 그들은 앞에 무엇이 있는지 정확하게 아시는 하나님을 따를 수가 있었습니다.

다윗이 도망을 다닐 때에도 이 확신이 위로가 되었습니다. 그는 참으로 불확실한 상황에서도 하나님께 이렇게 말합니다. “내 영이 내 속에서 상할 때에도 주께서 내 길을 아셨나이다”(시편 142:3). 우리도 살면서 앞에 놓인 일로 두려울 때가 있을 것입니다. 그러나 우리가 아는 한가지 사실은 우리와 함께 걸으시는 우리 하나님이 그 길을 아신다는 것입니다.

UNKNOWN ROUTE

Perhaps I shouldn’t have agreed to join Brian on a run. I was in a foreign country, and I had no idea where or how far we would go or what the terrain would be like. Plus, he was a fast runner. Would I twist an ankle trying to keep up with him? What could I do but trust Brian because he knew the way? As we started, I got even more worried. The trail was rough, winding through a thick forest on uneven ground. Thankfully, Brian kept turning around to check on me and warn me of rough patches ahead.

Perhaps this was how some of the people in Bible times felt while entering unfamiliar territory—Abraham in Canaan, the Israelites in the wilderness, and Jesus’ disciples on their mission to share the good news. They had no clue what the journey would be like, except that it would surely be tough. But they had Someone leading them who knew the way ahead. They had to trust that God would give them strength to cope and that He would take care of them. They could follow Him because He knew exactly what lay ahead.

This assurance comforted David when he was on the run. Despite great uncertainty, he said to God: “When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who watch over my way” (PSALM 142:3). There will be times in life when we fear what lies ahead. But we know this: our God, who walks with us, knows the way.

길에서 느끼는 자유

장애인 야구에서 맹인 선수들은 삐 소리 나는 공과 윙윙 소리내는 베이스 소리를 들으며 무엇을 하고 어디로 갈지를 알게 됩니다. 눈가리개를 한 (눈이 안 보이는 다양한 정도를 공평하게 하기 위해) 타자와 앞이 보이는 투수가 같은 팀을 이룹니다. 타자가 방망이를 휘둘러 소리 나는 공을 친 뒤에는 윙윙 소리를 내는 베이스로 달려갑니다. 타자가 베이스에 가기 전에 야수가 공을 “잡으면” 타자는 아웃입니다. 그렇지 않을 경우 타자가 득점을 합니다. 어떤 한 선수는 가야 할 길과 방향을 분명히 알기 때문에 “달릴 때 엄청난 자유”를 느낀다고 말했습니다.

이사야서는 “정직하신 주께서 의인의 첩경을 평탄하게 하시도다”(26:7) 라고 말합니다. 이 말이 기록될 당시 이스라엘 백성들의 길은 결코 평탄해 보이지 않았으며 그들의 불순종 때문에 하나님의 심판을 받고 있었습니다. 이사야는 그들에게 때로는 힘들지라도 믿음과 순종으로 평탄한 길을 걸으라고 촉구하였습니다. 하나님의 “이름을 위하고 또 주를 기억”(8절)하는 것을 마음의 중심에 두라고 한 것입니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리가 하나님의 길을 순종하며 따를 때 하나님을 더욱 알게 되고 그분의 신실하신 성품에 신뢰를 쌓아가게 됩니다. 삶의 여정이 언제나 순탄하게 보이거나 느껴지지 않을 지 모르지만, 하나님이 우리 곁에 계셔서 길을 만들어 나가는 분이심을 믿을 때 우리는 확신을 가질 수 있습니다. 우리를 위한 하나님의 최선의 길을 순종하며 달려갈 때 우리도 자유를 느낄 수 있습니다.

FREEDOM ON THE PATH

In Beep Baseball, the players who are blind listen for a beeping ball or buzzing base to know what to do and where to go. The blindfolded batter (to account for various degrees of blindness) and sighted pitcher are on the same team. When a batter swings the bat and hits the beeping ball, he or she runs toward the buzzing base. The batter is out if a fielder “smothers” the ball before the batter makes it to the base; otherwise, the batter scores a run. One player remarked that the best part is that he feels “great freedom in running” because he knows there’s a clear path and direction.

The book of Isaiah tells us that God, “the Upright One, make[s] the way of the righteous smooth” (26:7). When this was written, the path for the Israelites looked anything but smooth; they were experiencing divine judgment for their disobedience. Isaiah exhorted them to walk in faith and obedience—the often difficult but smooth path. Being concerned for God’s “name and renown” (V. 8) was to be their hearts’ focus.

As believers in Jesus, we come to know more about God and build our trust in His faithful character as we follow His ways in obedience. Our path in life may not always look or feel smooth, but we can be assured as we trust in Him that God is alongside us and making a way. We too can feel freedom as we run in obedience on God’s best path for us.

당신이 지쳤을 때

하루 일과를 마치고 노트북 컴퓨터를 앞에 두고 조용한 가운데 앉아 있었습니다. 그날 끝낸 일이 있어 많이 기뻤어야 하는데 기쁘질 않았습니다. 피곤했습니다. 직장의 문제 하나가 계속 염려되어 어깨가 아파왔고 한 사람과의 힘든 관계를 생각하느라 마음도 소진되었습니다. 이 모든 것들로부터 벗어나고 싶었습니다. 밤에 TV나 봐야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다.

그러나 눈을 감고 작은 소리로 “주님” 하고 불렀습니다. 너무 지쳐 그 이상 아무 말도 나오지 않았습니다. 나의 모든 피곤이 그 한마디에 다 담겨 있었습니다. 그러자 순간적으로 나의 피곤이 가야할 곳은 바로 그 한마디, 주님이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

예수님은 피곤하고 무거운 짐을 진 우리에게 “내게로 오라. 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라” 라고 말씀하십니다(마태복음 11:28). 이것은 하룻밤 편히 자는 휴식과 다르고, 텔레비전처럼 현실을 잠시 잊게 하는 것도 아닙니다. 문제가 해결되었을 때 오는 해방감도 전혀 아닙니다. 이것들은 다 쉴 수 있는 좋은 방법이긴 하지만, 사실은 잠시 숨을 돌리게 하는 것일 뿐 상황에 따라 한계가 있는 것입니다.

반면에 예수님께서 주시는 휴식은 오래 가며 그분의 변치 않는 성품으로 보장되는 휴식입니다. 항상 선하신 예수님은 우리에게 고난 가운데서도 우리 영혼에 진정한 안식을 주십니다. 모든 것이 예수님의 통제 하에 있다는 것을 우리가 알기 때문입니다. 우리는 예수님만이 주실 수 있는 능력과 회복 덕분에 그를 믿고 순종하며 어려운 상황에서도 견딜 수 있고 나아가 성공할 수 있습니다.

“내게로 오라.” 예수님이 말씀하십니다. “내게로 오라.”

WHEN YOU’RE WEARY

I sat in the stillness of a workday’s end, my laptop in front of me. I should’ve been exhilarated about the work I’d finished that day, but I wasn’t. I was tired. My shoulders ached with the load of anxiety over a problem at work, and my mind was spent from thinking about a troubled relationship. I wanted to escape from it all—my thoughts wandered to watching TV that night.

But I closed my eyes. “Lord,” I whispered. I was too tired to say more. All my weariness went into that one word. And somehow, I immediately knew that was where it should go.

“Come to me,” Jesus tells us who are weary and burdened, “and I will give you rest” (MATTHEW 11:28). Not the rest from a good night’s sleep. Not the break from reality that television offers. Not even
the relief when a problem has been solved. Although these may be good sources of rest, the respite they offer is short-lived and dependent on our circumstances.

In contrast, the rest Jesus gives is lasting and guaranteed by His unchanging character. He’s always good. He gives us true rest for our souls even amid trouble because we know that everything is in His control. We can trust and submit to Him, endure and even thrive in difficult situations because of the strength and restoration only He can give.

“Come to me,” Jesus tells us. “Come to me.”

모든 것을 잃어도

시기가 매우 안 좋았습니다. 시저는 교량과 기념비, 큰 건물 등을 건축해서 마련한 얼마의 재산으로 새로운 사업을 해보려는 포부를 품고 자신의 첫 번째 사업을 매각한 후 곧 재투자할 계획으로 그 돈을 은행에 입금했습니다. 그러나 그 짧은 기간 사이에 그 나라의 정부가 은행의 개인 계좌에 있는 모든 자산을 압류해 버렸습니다. 한 순간에 시저가 평생 모은 돈이 증발해 버린 것입니다.

시저는 이런 부당함을 그저 불평거리로 삼지 않기로 하고 하나님께 앞으로 나아갈 길을 보여 달라고 간구했습니다. 그리고는 그저 새롭게 다시 시작했습니다.

욥은 한 순간의 끔찍한 일들로 재산뿐 아니라 훨씬 더 많은 것들을 잃었습니다. 대부분의 종들과 그의 모든 자녀를 잃었고(욥기 1:13-22), 자신의 건강마저 잃어버렸습니다(2:7-8). 그럼에도 욥이 보인 반응은 우리에게 영원한 모범이 되고 있습니다. 그는 “내가 모태에서 알몸으로 나왔사온즉 또한 알몸이 그리로 돌아가올지라 주신 이도 여호와시요 거두신 이도 여호와시오니 여호와의 이름이 찬송을 받으실지니이다”(1:21)라고 기도했습니다. 욥기 1장은 “이 모든 일에 욥이 범죄하지 아니하고 하나님을 향하여 원망하지 아니하니라”(22절) 하며 끝을 맺고 있습니다.

시저도 욥처럼 하나님을 신뢰하기로 했습니다. 그리고 새롭게 시작한 사업이 불과 몇 년 만에 처음 것보다 더 성공적으로 성장했습니다. 그의 이야기는 욥의 나중 이야기와 비슷합니다(욥기 42장 참조). 그러나 시저는 설령 경제적으로 회복되지 않았다 해도 자신의 진짜 보화는 이 땅에 있지 않다는 것을(마태복음 6:19-20) 알기 때문에 여전히 하나님을 신뢰했을 것입니다.

LOSING EVERYTHING

The timing couldn’t have been worse. After making a small fortune engineering bridges, monuments, and large buildings, Cesar had aspirations of starting a new endeavor. So he sold his first business and banked the money, planning to reinvest it soon. During that brief window, his government seized all assets held in private bank accounts. In an instant, Cesar’s lifesavings evaporated.

Choosing not to view the injustice as a cause to complain, Cesar asked God to show him the way forward. And then—he simply started over.

In one awful moment, Job lost far more than merely his possessions. He lost most of his servants and all his children (JOB 1:13–22). Then he lost his health (2:7–8). Job’s response remains a timeless example for us. He prayed, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised” (1:21). The chapter concludes, “In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing” (V. 22).

Like Job, Cesar chose to trust God. In just a few years he had built a new business more successful than the first. His story resembles the conclusion of Job’s (see Job 42). But even if Cesar had never recovered economically, he knew his real treasure wasn’t on this earth anyway (MATTHEW 6:19–20). He would still be trusting God.
