권면의 은사

“벌들이 떼를 짓고 있어요!” 아내가 문 안으로 머리만 보이면서 양봉하는 사람이라면 아무도 원치 않을 소식을 전해주었습니다. 밖으로 뛰어나와 보니 수천 마리나 되는 벌들이 벌집에서 나와 큰 소나무 위로 날아오르더니 영영 돌아오질 않았습니다.

일주일이 넘도록 내린 폭우로 벌통을 점검하지 못했던 나는 벌통속의 벌들이 떼를 이루어 나갈 거라는 낌새를 미처 알아차리지 못했습니다. 그러다 폭풍이 그친 아침에 벌들이 벌통을 빠져나간 것입니다. 그 벌들은 새롭게 만들어진 건강한 집단이었는데, 알고보니 벌들이 새 집단을 또 하나 만들려고 집단을 나누고 있었던 것입니다. 한 경험 많은 양봉가가 실망하는 나의 모습을 보고는 “너무 자책하지 말게. 누구나 겪는 일이니까!” 하며 웃으며 달래주었습니다.

권면은 사람의 마음을 끄는 은사입니다. 다윗이 자기 목숨을 노리고 뒤를 쫓는 사울 때문에 낙심하자 사울의 아들 요나단은 다윗을 이렇게 격려해 주었습니다. “두려워하지 말라 내 아버지 사울의 손이 네게 미치지 못할 것이요 너는 이스라엘 왕이 되고 나는 네 다음이 될 것을 내 아버지 사울도 안다” (사무엘상 23:17).

왕위계승 서열 1위인 사람이 참으로 자신을 양보하며 한 말이었습니다. 아마도 요나단은 하나님께서 다윗과 함께 하심을 알고 겸손한 믿음의 마음으로 그렇게 말했을 것입니다.

우리들 곁 어디에나 격려가 필요한 사람들이 있습니다. 우리가 하나님 앞에 자신을 낮추고 우리를 통해 그들을 사랑해 달라고 간구할 때 하나님은 우리를 도와 그들을 돕게 하실 것입니다.

THE GIFT OF ENCOURAGEMENT

“Your bees are swarming!” My wife stuck her head inside the door and gave me news no beekeeper wants to hear. I ran outside to see thousands of bees flying up from the hive to the top of a tall pine, never to return.

I was a little behind in reading the clues that the hive was about to swarm; more than a week of storms had hampered my inspections. The morning the storms ended, the bees left. The colony was new and healthy, and the bees were actually dividing the colony to start a new one. “Don’t be hard on yourself,” an experienced beekeeper told me cheerfully after seeing my disappointment. “This can happen to anyone!”

Encouragement is a winsome gift. When David was disheartened because Saul was pursuing him to take his life, Saul’s son Jonathan encouraged David. “Don’t be afraid,” Jonathan said. “My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this” (1 SAMUEL 23:17).

Those are surprisingly selfless words from someone next in line to the throne. It’s likely Jonathan recognized that God was with David, so he spoke out of a humble heart of faith.

All around us are people who need encouragement. God will help us help them as we humble ourselves before Him and ask Him to love them through us.

열린 공간을 찾아서

리차드 스웬슨 박사는 자신의 저서 ‘여유’에서 이렇게 쓰고 있습니다. “우리에게는 숨 쉴 공간이 있어야 합니다. 자유롭게 생각할 수 있고 치유도 받을 수 있어야 합니다. 그런데 우리의 인간관계는 지금 삶의 속도에 눌려 굶어 죽어가고 있습니다... 우리의 아이들은 좋은 의도라며 과속하는 우리에게 치어 다친 채 땅바닥에 쓰러져 있습니다. 하나님은 이제 과로를 옹호하시나요? 사람들을 더 이상 잔잔한 물가로 인도하지 않으시나요? 과거의 그 넓은 공간들은 누가 빼앗아갔으며, 우리는 그 공간들을 어떻게 되찾을 수 있을까요?” 스웬슨은 우리의 삶에 하나님 안에서 쉬고 하나님을 만날 수 있는 조용하고 비옥한 “땅”이 필요하다고 말합니다.

그의 말이 마음에 울림을 줍니까? 모세는 열린 공간을 찾는 모습을 자기 삶으로 보여주었습니다. “고집이 세고 반항하는”(출애굽기 33:5) 백성들을 이끌었던 그는 종종 뒤로 물러나 하나님 앞에서 안식하며 인도하심을 구했습니다. 그리고 그의 “회막”(7절)에서 “사람이 자기의 친구와 이야기함 같이 여호와께서는 모세와 대면하여 말씀하셨습니다”(11절). 예수님도 “자주 조용한 곳으로 가셔서 기도하셨습니다”(누가복음 5:16, 현대인의 성경). 예수님과 모세는 하나님 아버지와 단 둘이 시간을 보내는 것의 중요함을 잘 알았습니다.

우리도 삶에 여유를 확보할 필요가 있습니다. 하나님 앞에서 안식하며 보낼 수 있는 넓고 열린 공간이 필요합니다. 하나님과 함께 시간을 보내면 우리가 더 나은 결정을 하는데 도움이 되며, 건강한 삶의 여백과 경계를 확보해 하나님과 다른 사람들을 더 잘 사랑할 수 있는 여력이 생길 것입니다. 오늘 열린 공간에서 하나님을 찾으십시다.

FINDING OPEN SPACES

In his book Margin, Dr. Richard Swenson writes, “We must have some room to breathe. We need freedom to think and permission to heal. Our relationships are being starved to death by velocity. . . . Our children lay wounded on the ground, run over by our high-speed good intentions. Is God now pro-exhaustion? Doesn’t He lead people beside the still waters anymore? Who plundered those wide-open spaces of the past, and how can we get them back?” Swenson says we need some quiet, fertile “land” in life where we can rest in God and meet with Him.

Does that resonate? Seeking open spaces is something Moses lived out well. Leading a nation of “stubborn and rebellious” people (EXODUS 33:5 NLT), he often withdrew to find rest and guidance in God’s presence. And in his “tent of meeting” (V. 7), “the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend” (V. 11). Jesus also “often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (LUKE 5:16). Both He and Moses realized the importance of spending time alone with the Father.

We too need to build margin into our lives, some wide and open spaces spent in rest and in God’s presence. Spending time with Him will help us make better decisions—creating healthier margins and boundaries in our life so we have the bandwidth available to love Him and others well. Let’s seek God in open spaces today.

그리스도의 능력

2013년에 약 600명의 사람들이 공중 곡예사 닉 월렌다가 그랜드 캐년 근처의 폭 1500피트(약 450미터)의 협곡을 가로질러 줄타기를 하는 것을 현장에서 지켜보았습니다. 월렌다는 2인치(5센티미터) 두께의 쇠 밧줄 위로 발을 내디뎠을 때 그의 머리 위의 카메라가 아래 계곡을 비추자 그 광경을 보고 예수님께 감사했습니다. 그는 마치 길을 거니는 것처럼 차분하게 협곡을 가로질러 걸으면서 기도하며 예수님을 찬양했습니다. 바람이 세게 불면 걸음을 멈추고 웅크렸다가 다시 일어서 균형을 되찾으면서 “밧줄을 진정시켜 주신” 하나님께 감사했습니다. 줄타기를 하며 한발 한발 뗄 때마다 그는 전 세계에서 영상을 보고 있는 모든 사람들에게 그리스도의 능력에 의지하는 자신의 모습을 보여주었습니다.

갈릴리 바다에서 광풍이 불어 파도가 덮쳤을 때 제자들은 두려워하여 주님께 도움을 간구했습니다(마가복음 4:35-38). 예수님이 바람을 잔잔하게 하시자 제자들은 예수님이 바람과 그 밖의 모든 것을 주관하신다는 것을 알게 되었습니다(39-41절). 그리고 조금씩 주님을 더 신뢰하는 법을 배워 나갔습니다. 제자들은 직접 경험한 일들을 통해 예수님이 세밀한 데까지 돌보시며, 놀라운 능력을 가지신 분임을 사람들에게 말해줄 수 있었습니다.

인생의 폭풍우 속에서나 고난의 깊은 골짜기를 신뢰의 밧줄을 타고 걸어갈 때 우리도 그리스도의 능력을 믿는 확신 있는 믿음을 보여줄 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 믿음의 걸음을 사용하여 다른 사람들을 감동시켜 하나님께 소망을 두게 하실 것입니다.

THE POWER OF CHRIST

In 2013, about six hundred on-site spectators watched aerialist Nik Wallenda walk on a tightrope across a 1500-foot-wide gorge near the Grand Canyon. Wallenda stepped onto the 2-inch-thick steel cable and thanked Jesus for the view as his head camera pointed toward the valley below. He prayed and praised Jesus as he walked across the gorge as calmly as if he was strolling on a sidewalk. When the wind became treacherous, he stopped and crouched. He rose and regained his balance, thanking God for “calming that cable.” With every step on that tightrope, he displayed his dependence on the power of Christ to everyone listening then and now as the video is watched across the world.

When the winds of a storm caused waves to overtake the disciples on the sea of Galilee, fear seeped through their pleas for help (MARK 4:35–38). After Jesus stilled the squall, they knew He controlled the winds and everything else (VV. 39–41). Slowly they learned to grow in their trust of Him. Their personal experiences could help others recognize Jesus’ intimate availability and extraordinary might.

As we experience life’s storms or walk on the tightropes of trust stretched over the deep valleys of affliction, we can demonstrate confident faith in the power of Christ. God will use our faith-walk to inspire others to hope in Him.

예배라는 축제

사람들은 대규모 행사에 참석하면서 놀라운 변화를 경험하기도 합니다. 연구원 다니엘 유드킨과 그의 동료들은 영국과 미국에서 여러 날에 걸친 행사에서 1,200명이 넘는 사람들과 만나고 나서, 대규모 축제는 우리의 가치 기준에 영향을 줄 수 있고 나아가 자기가 가진 것을 다른 사람들과 나누려는 마음에도 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그들의 연구에 따르면 참석자의 63퍼센트가 축제를 통해 “변화되는” 경험을 했으며, 이로 인해 인간에 대한 친근감이 더 생기고 친구나 가족, 나아가 전혀 모르는 사람에게까지 관대해지는 느낌을 갖게 되었다고 합니다.

그러나 우리가 하나님을 경배하기 위해 함께 모일 때에는 단순히 세상의 축제에서 얻는 사회적 “변화” 이상의 것을 경험할 수 있는데, 그것은 바로 하나님과 교통하는 것입니다. 구약 시대의 하나님의 백성들도 연중에 예루살렘에 모여 영적인 예배의식으로 하나님을 기념할 때 분명 하나님과 교통하는 것을 경험했을 것입니다. 그들은 일년에 세 번 성전에서 이루어지는 “무교절과 칠칠절과 초막절” 축제에 참석하기 위해 오늘날보다 훨씬 힘든 여행을 했습니다(신명기 16:16). 이 행사들은 가족과 종, 나그네와 다른 사람들이 함께 “여호와 앞에서” 엄숙하게 기념하고 예배하며 기뻐하는 시간이었습니다 (11절).

우리도 예배로 함께 모여 계속 주님을 기뻐하며 그분의 신실하심을 믿을 수 있도록 서로 도와줍시다.

FESTIVALS OF WORSHIP

Attending a large event might change you in a surprising way. After interacting with more than 1,200 people at multiday gatherings in the UK and US, researcher Daniel Yudkin and his colleagues learned that large festivals can impact our moral compass and even affect our willingness to share resources with others. Their research found that 63 percent of attendees had a “transformative” experience at the festival that also left them feeling more connected to humanity and more generous toward friends, family, and even complete strangers.

When we gather with others to worship God, however, we can experience more than merely the social “transformation” of a secular festival; we commune with God Himself. God’s people undoubtedly experienced that connection to Him when they gathered in Jerusalem in ancient times for their sacred festivals throughout the year. They traveled—without modern conveniences— to be present at the temple three times a year for “the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Weeks and the Festival of Tabernacles” (DEUTERONOMY 16:16). These gatherings were times of solemn remembrance, worship, and rejoicing “before the Lord” with family, servants, foreigners, and others (V. 11).

Let’s gather with others for worship to help one another to continue to enjoy Him and trust in His faithfulness.

브랜드 홍보대사보다 더

인터넷 시대를 맞이하여 경쟁이 치열해지면서 기업들은 고객을 유치하기 위해 점점 더 창조적인 방법들을 개발하고 있습니다. 수바루 자동차의 예를 보면, 수바루를 가진 사람들은 충성도가 높은 것으로 유명하기 때문에 회사는 “수바루 광팬들”을 초대하여 자동차 “브랜드 홍보대사”가 되게 했습니다.

회사 웹사이트에는 “수바루 홍보대사들은 수바루에 대한 이야기를 널리 전하고 브랜드의 미래를 만들어 나가는데 열과 성을 다해 자원봉사하는 적극적인 분들의 모임”이라고 설명합니다. 회사는 수바루를 가지면 하나의 신분상승처럼 여겨지고, 그래서 사람들이 아주 열정적으로 그것을 다른 이들에게 전하지 않을 수 없게 되기를 바랍니다.

고린도후서 5장에서 바울은 예수님을 믿으라고 초대하는 또 하나의 “대사” 프로그램에 대해 설명합니다. “우리는 주님을 두려워하는 것이 어떤 것인지 알기 때문에 사람들에게 권합니다”(11절, 현대인의 성경). 이어서 그는 “화목하게 하는 말씀을 우리에게 부탁하셨느니라 그러므로 우리가 그리스도를 대신하여 사신이 되어 하나님이 우리를 통하여 너희를 권면하시는 것 같이 그리스도를 대신하여 간청하노니 너희는 하나님과 화목하라”(19-20절)고 말합니다.

세상의 많은 상품들이 사람들 깊은 곳의 필요를 채워주겠다고 약속 합니다. 행복감과 부족함 없는 삶과 목적의식 같은 것들입니다. 그러나 단 하나의 메시지, 곧 예수님을 믿는 우리에게 맡겨주신 화해의 메시지만이 ‘진정’ 기쁜 소식입니다. 그리고 절박한 세상에 이 메시지를 전달하는 특권이 우리에게 있습니다.

MORE THAN BRAND AMBASSADORS

Competition in the internet age has become fierce. Increasingly, companies are developing creative ways to attract customers. Take Subaru vehicles, for instance. Subaru owners are famously loyal, so the company has invited “Subbie superfans” to become “brand ambassadors” of the vehicles.

The company’s website says, “Subaru Ambassadors are an exclusive group of energetic individuals who volunteer their passion and enthusiasm to spread the word about Subaru and help shape the future of the brand.” The company wants Subaru ownership to become a part of people’s very identity—something they’re so passionate about that they can’t help but share.

In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul describes a different “ambassador” program, one of inviting others to follow Jesus. “Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others” (V. 11). Paul then adds, “He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God” (VV. 19–20).

Many products promise to meet deep needs, to give us a sense of happiness, wholeness, and purpose. But only one message—the message of reconciliation entrusted to us as believers in Jesus— is truly good news. And we have the privilege of delivering that message to a desperate world.

끈기의 힘

1917년 한 젊은 여자 재봉사가 뉴욕의 가장 유명한 패션 디자인 학교 중 한 곳에 입학하게 되어 몹시 기뻐했습니다. 하지만 학교에 등록하려고 플로리다에서 온 앤 로우 콘에게 학교 교장은 입학이 안된다고 말했습니다. “콘 부인, 솔직히 말씀드려 우리는 당신이 흑인인줄 몰랐습니다.” 그러나 앤은 떠나질 않고 ‘제발 여기 있게 해주세요.’라고 속삭이는 기도를 했습니다. 그녀의 끈기를 본 교장은 앤을 머무르게는 했지만 백인전용 교실에는 들어가지 못하고 대신 뒷문을 열어 두어 “그냥 들을 수 있게” 해주었습니다.

누가 봐도 특별한 재능을 지녔던 앤은 학교를 6개월 일찍 졸업하며 상류층 고객들의 관심을 끌게 되었습니다. 그 중에는 그녀가 디자인한 세계적으로 유명한 웨딩드레스를 입은 미국의 전 영부인 재클린 케네디도 있었습니다. 봉제실 위쪽에서 파이프가 터져 처음 만든 드레스를 망치는 바람에 그녀는 하나님의 도우심을 구하며 재클린의 드레스를 두 번째 만들었습니다.

기도할 때 특별히 이와 같은 끈기는 힘이 있습니다. 끈기 있는 과부에 대한 예수님의 비유에서, 한 과부는 부패한 재판장에게 가서 원한을 풀어 달라고 거듭 간청합니다. 재판장은 처음에는 거절했지만, “이 과부가 나를 번거롭게 하니 그 원한을 풀어주리라”(누가복음 18:5)고 말했습니다.

그런데 사랑이 더 풍성하신 ”하나님께서 그 밤낮 부르짖는 택하신 자들의 원한을 풀어주지 아니하시겠습니까?”(7절). 예수님은 하나님이 ‘풀어주실 것’ 이라고 하셨습니다(8절). 하나님께서 감동 주시는 대로 끈기 있게 기도하기를 힘쓰며 절대 포기하지 맙시다. 하나님은 그분의 때에 가장 좋은 방법으로 응답해 주실 것입니다.

THE POWER OF PERSISTENCE

In 1917, a young seamstress was thrilled to get admitted to one of New York City’s most renowned fashion design schools. But when Ann Lowe Cone arrived from Florida to register for classes, the school director told her she wasn’t welcome. “To be blunt, Mrs. Cone, we didn’t know that you were a Negro,” he said. Refusing to leave, she whispered a prayer: Please let me stay here. Seeing her persistence, the director let Ann stay, but segregated her from the whites-only classroom leaving the back door open “for [her] to hear.”

Undeniably talented, Ann still graduated six months early and attracted high-society clients including former first lady of the United States Jacqueline Kennedy, whose world-famous wedding gown she designed. She made the gown twice, seeking God’s help after a pipe burst above her sewing studio, ruining the first dress.

Persistence like that is powerful, especially in prayer. In Jesus’ parable of the persistent widow, a widow pleads repeatedly for justice from a corrupt judge. At first, he refused her, but “because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice” (LUKE 18:5).

With far more love, “will not God bring about justice for His chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night?” (V. 7). He will, said Jesus (V. 8). As He inspires us, let’s seek to persistently pray and never give up. In His time and perfect way, God will answer.

우리의 형제이신 예수님

한 사나운 개가 그의 여동생에게 달려들자 본능적으로 몸을 날려 동생 앞을 막아서며 맹렬히 달려드는 개를 막아냈던 브리저 워커는 그때 겨우 여섯 살밖에 되지 않았습니다. 응급치료를 받고 얼굴에 90바늘을 꿰맨 브리저는 자기가 한 일에 대해 이렇게 말했습니다. “만약 누구 하나가 죽어야 한다면 내가 죽어야 한다고 생각했어요.” 다행히 성형외과 의사들의 도움으로 브리저의 얼굴은 회복되었습니다. 얼마전 그가 여동생을 껴안고 찍은 사진을 보면 오빠의 사랑이 여전히 진하게 남아 있습니다.

이상적인 가정이라면 가족이 서로를 지키고 보살펴줍니다. 진정한 형제는 어려움에 처했을 때 나서주고, 두렵거나 혼자 있을 때 함께 해줍니다. 하지만 현실적으로는 아무리 좋은 형제라 해도 불완전하며, 어떤 형제는 상처를 주기도 합니다. 그러나 언제나 우리 편에 서 계시는 한 형제, 예수님이 계십니다. 히브리서는 그리스도께서 겸손한 사랑으로 우리의 “혈과 육”을 함께 지녀 인류의 가족이 되셨고, “범사에 형제들과” 같이 되셨다고 말합니다(2:14, 17). 그래서 예수님은 우리의 가장 진실한 형제이시며 우리를 그의 “형제 자매”로 부르기를 즐겨하십니다(11절).

우리는 예수님을 우리의 구주요 친구요 왕이라고 부릅니다. 이 모두 다 사실입니다. 그러나 예수님은 동시에 인간의 모든 두려움과 유혹, 절망과 슬픔을 경험하신 우리의 형제이기도 하십니다. 우리의 형제이신 예수님은 항상 우리 곁에 서 계십니다.

JESUS OUR BROTHER

Bridger Walker was only six when a menacing dog lunged at his younger sister. Instinctively, Bridger jumped in front of her, shielding her from the dog’s ferocious attack. After receiving emergency care and ninety stitches to his face, Bridger explained his actions. “If someone had to die, I thought it should be me.” Thankfully, plastic surgeons have helped Bridger’s face heal. But his brotherly love, evidenced in recent pictures where he’s seen hugging his sister, remains strong as ever.

Ideally, family members watch over us and care for us. True brothers step in when we’re in trouble and come alongside us when we’re afraid or alone. In reality, even our best brothers are imperfect; some even wound us. We have one brother, however, who’s always on our side, Jesus. Hebrews tells us that Christ, as an act of humble love, joined the human family, sharing our “flesh and blood” and becoming like us, “fully human in every way” (2:14, 17). As a result, Jesus is our truest brother, and He delights in calling us His “brothers and sisters” (V. 11).

We refer to Jesus as our Savior, Friend, and King—and each of these are true. However, Jesus is also our brother who has experienced every human fear and temptation, every despair or sadness. Our brother stands alongside us—always.

외롭더라도 잊히지 않은 우리

교도소 생활에서 가장 힘든 부분은 아마도 격리생활과 외로움일 거라는 것은 수감자들의 이야기를 들어보면 분명해집니다. 사실, 한 연구에 의하면 복역 기간과 상관없이 대부분의 경우 수감 기간 동안 친구나 가족들이 단 두 번만 면회를 온다고 합니다. 늘 외로움 속에서 지내는 것이지요.

요셉의 경우를 생각해봐도, 그는 억울한 누명을 쓰고 감옥에 앉아 있으면서 고통스러웠을 것입니다. 그런데 희미하게나마 희망이 생겼습니다. 하나님이 요셉을 도우셔서 바로의 충직한 신하였던 동료 수감자의 꿈을 제대로 해석해 준 것입니다. 요셉은 그가 복직하게 될 것을 말해주며 바로에게 자기에 대해 말해서 자유를 얻게 해 달라고 부탁했습니다(창세기 40:14). 그러나 그 사람은 “요셉을 기억하지 못하고 그를 잊었습니다”(23절). 요셉은 ‘2년’을 더 기다렸습니다. 그의 상황이 바뀔 아무런 조짐도 없이 기다리는 그 기간 동안 하나님은 요셉과 함께 하셨고, 그래서 그는 결코 혼자가 아니었습니다. 마침내 바로의 신하는 자기가 했던 약속을 기억해 냈고, 요셉은 또 다른 꿈을 제대로 해석해 주고 자유롭게 되었습니다(41:9-14).

모두가 나를 잊었다고 느껴지고 외로움이 몰려오는 어떤 상황에서도, 우리는 “나는 너를 잊지 아니할 것이라”(이사야 49:15)고 하나님께서 그의 자녀들에게 하신 약속을 붙잡아야 합니다.

LONELY, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

When you listen to their stories, it becomes clear that perhaps the most difficult part of being a prisoner is isolation and loneliness. In fact, one study revealed that regardless of the length of their incarceration, most prisoners receive only two visits from friends or loved ones during their time behind bars. Loneliness is a constant reality.

It’s a pain I imagine Joseph felt as he sat in prison, unjustly accused of a crime. There had been a glimmer of hope. God helped Joseph correctly interpret a dream from a fellow inmate who happened to be a trusted servant of Pharaoh. Joseph told the man he would be restored to his position and asked the man to mention him to Pharaoh so Joseph could gain his freedom (GENESIS 40:14). But the man “did not remember Joseph; he forgot him” (V. 23). For two more years, Joseph waited. In those years of waiting, without any sign that his circumstances would change, Joseph was never completely alone because God was with him. Eventually, the servant of Pharaoh remembered his promise and Joseph was released after correctly interpreting another dream (41:9–14).

Regardless of circumstances that make us feel we’ve been forgotten, and the feelings of loneliness that creep in, we can cling to God’s reassuring promise to His children: “I will not forget you!” (ISAIAH 49:15).

A DIFFERENT APPROACH

When Mary Slessor sailed to the African nation of Calabar (now Nigeria) in the late 1800s, she was enthusiastic to continue the missionary work of the late David Livingstone. Her first assignment, teaching school while living among fellow missionaries, left her burdened for a different way to serve. So she did something rare in that region—she moved in with the people she was serving. Mary learned their language, lived their way, and ate their food. She even took in dozens of children who’d been abandoned. For nearly forty years, she brought hope and the gospel to those who needed both.

The apostle Paul knew the importance of truly meeting the needs of those around us. He mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:4–5 that there are “different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit,” and “different kinds of service, but the same Lord.” So he served people in their area of need. For instance, “to the weak [he] became weak” (9:22).

One church I’m aware of recently announced the launch of an “all abilities” ministry approach complete with a barrier-free facility—making worship available for people with disabilities. This is the Paul-like kind of thinking that wins hearts and allows the gospel to flourish in a community.

As we live out our faith before those around us, may God lead us to introduce them to Jesus in new and fresh ways.

영원히 신실하신 하나님

자비어가 초등학생 때 내가 운전하며 통학시켰는데, 하루는 일이 계획대로 끝나지 않아 아이를 늦게 데리러 갔습니다. 차를 주차하고 정신없이 기도하면서 아이의 교실로 달려갔습니다. 아이는 선생님 옆 의자에 책가방을 껴안고 앉아 있었습니다. “얘야, 미안해. 괜찮니?”라고 묻자 아이는 한숨을 쉬며 “괜찮아요. 근데 엄마가 늦어서 화났어요.”라고 말했습니다. 내가 무어라 할 수 있었을까요? 나도 나 자신에게 화가 나 있었습니다. 나는 아들을 사랑하지만 앞으로도 그를 실망시킬 때가 많을 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그리고 그도 언젠가 하나님께 실망할 때가 있을 거란 것도 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 나는 아이에게 하나님은 지금까지 약속을 어긴 적이 없고, 앞으로도 결코 어기지 않으신다는 것을 열심히 가르쳐주었습니다.

시편 33편은 “여호와의 말씀은 정직하며 그가 행하시는 일은 다 진실하시기”(4절) 때문에 여호와의 신실하심을 즐겁게 찬양하라고 권면합니다 (1-3절). 시편 기자는 하나님께서 창조하신 세상을 그분의 능력과 신뢰성을 보여주는 증거로 사용하여(5-7절) “세상의 모든 거민들”에게 하나님을 경외할 것을 촉구합니다(8절).

계획이 실패하거나 사람들이 우리를 실망시킬 때 우리는 하나님께 실망하는 마음이 생길 수도 있습니다. 그러나 하나님의 계획은 “영원히 서 있기”(11절) 때문에 우리는 신뢰할 수 있는 하나님을 의지할 수 있습니다. 사랑이 많으신 창조주께서 만물과 모든 사람을 붙들어 주시므로 일이 잘못되더라도 우리는 하나님을 찬양할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 영원토록 신실하십니다.

FOREVER FAITHFUL GOD

When Xavier was an elementary student, I drove him to and from school. One day, things didn’t go according to plan. I was late to pick him up. I parked the car, praying frantically as I ran toward his classroom. I found him hugging his backpack as he sat on a bench next to a teacher. “I’m so sorry, Mijo. Are you okay?” He sighed. “I’m fine, but I’m mad at you for being late.” How could I blame him? I was mad at me too. I loved my son, but I knew there would be many times when I’d disappoint him. I also knew he might feel disappointed with God one day. So I worked hard to teach him that God never has and never will break a promise.

Psalm 33 encourages us to celebrate God’s faithfulness with joyful praises (VV. 1–3) because “the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does” (V. 4). Using the world God created as tangible proof of His power and dependability (VV. 5–7), the psalmist calls on the “people of the world” to worship God (V. 8).

When plans fail or people let us down, we can be tempted to be disappointed in God. However, we can rely on God’s trustworthiness because His plans “stand firm forever” (V. 11). We can praise God, even when things go wrong because our loving Creator sustains everything and everyone. God is forever faithful.
