나는 누구인가?

키좀보는 모닥불 앞에 앉아 자기 삶의 중요한 문제들을 생각해 보았습니다. ‘지금까지 내가 이룬 것이 뭔가?’ 그러자 ‘정말 한 게 별로 없다’는 답이 너무나 쉽게 나왔습니다. 그는 자기가 태어난 고향으로 돌아와 그의 아버지가 전에 열대우림 오지에 세운 학교의 일을 돌보았습니다. 그리고 두 번의 내전을 겪었던 아버지의 생생한 이야기를 글로 써보려고도 했습니다. 그러다가 ‘내가 뭔데 이런 일까지 하려 하지?’라는 생각이 들었습니다.

키좀보의 의구심은 모세의 경우와 비슷합니다. 하나님이 모세에게 “이제 내가 너를 바로에게 보내어 너에게 내 백성 이스라엘 자손을 애굽에서 인도하여 내게 하리라”(출애굽기 3:10)는 임무를 주시자 모세는 “내가 누구이기에”(11절) 라고 대답했습니다.

모세의 유약한 변명을 들으신 하나님은 “네 손에 있는 것이 무엇이냐?” 고 물으셨습니다. 그것은 지팡이였습니다(출애굽기 4:2). 하나님의 지시에 따라 모세가 그것을 땅에 던지자 지팡이가 뱀으로 변했습니다. 내키지 않았으나 모세가 뱀을 집어 들자, 그것은 다시 지팡이가 되었습니다(4절). 하나님의 능력 안에서 모세는 바로를 대면할 수 있었습니다. 그는 말 그대로 이집트의 “신들” 중 하나였던 뱀을 손에 쥐고 있었습니다. 이집트의 신들은 한 분이신 참 하나님에게는 위협이 되지 못했습니다.

모세를 생각하던 키좀보는 하나님이 ‘나와 내 말이 너와 함께 한다’고 응답하시는 것을 느꼈습니다. 그는 또한 자기에게 아버지의 이야기를 써서 아버지 삶에 임하셨던 하나님의 권능을 사람들에게 알리라고 권면해 주었던 친구들을 떠올렸습니다. 그는 결코 혼자가 아니었습니다.

우리 혼자서는 아무리 힘을 써보아도 부족합니다. 그러나 우리가 섬기는 하나님께서 “내가 반드시 너와 함께 있으리라”(3:12)고 말씀하십니다.

WHO AM I?

Kizombo sat watching the campfire, pondering the great questions of his life. What have I accomplished? he thought. Too quickly the answer came back: Not much, really. He was back in the land of his birth, serving at the school his father had started deep in the rainforest. He was also trying to write his father’s powerful story of surviving two civil wars. Who am I to try to do all this?

Kizombo’s misgivings sound like those of Moses. God had just given Moses a mission: “I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt” (EXODUS 3:10). Moses replied, “Who am I?” (V. 11).

After some weak excuses from Moses, God asked him, “What is that in your hand?” It was a staff (4:2). At God’s direction, Moses threw it on the ground. The staff turned into a snake. Against his instincts, Moses picked it up. Again, it became a staff (V. 4). In God’s power, Moses could face Pharaoh. He literally had one of the “gods” of Egypt—a snake—in his hand. Egypt’s gods were no threat to the one true God.

Kizombo thought of Moses, and he sensed God’s answer: You have Me and My Word. He thought too of friends who encouraged him to write his father’s story so others would learn of God’s power in his life. He wasn’t alone.

On our own, our best efforts are inadequate. But we serve the God who says, “I will be with you” (3:12). - TIM GUSTAFSON

하나님은 종종 그분의 온전한 목적을 이루시기 위해 전혀 예상치 못한 방법으로 일하십니다. 하나님을 떠난 인생들을 십자가에서 죽으신 예수님의 사랑을 통해 건지시는 하나님의 계획에 대해 말하면서 바울은 이렇게 결론을 내립니다. “그러나 하나님께서 세상의 미련한 것들을 택하사 지혜 있는 자들을 부끄럽게 하려 하시고 세상의 약한 것들을 택하사 강한 것들을 부끄럽게 하려 하셨습니다”(고린도전서 1:27). 세상 사람들은 하나님의 지혜가 우리 지혜와 비슷하다고 생각하고, 저항할 수 없는 힘을 가지고 올 것으로 기대했습니다. 그러나 예수님은 우리 죄에서 우리를 구원하시기 위해 겸손하고 온유한 모습으로 오셔서, 우리에게 “하나님으로부터 오는 지혜가 되시며, 의와 거룩함과 구원이 되셨습니다”(30절, 새번역).

영원하신 하나님, 모든 지혜의 하나님께서 아기로 오셔서 어른으로 자라 고통받고 죽고 부활하심으로 우리에게 하나님의 집으로 갈 수 있는 사랑의 길을 보여주셨습니다. 하나님은 우리 힘으로는 절대 할 수 없는 큰 일들을 겸손한 사람들과 방법을 사용하여 이루기를 좋아하십니다. 우리가 원한다면 하나님은 우리를 사용하실 수도 있습니다.

GOD’S UNEXPECTED WAYS

The pastor squinted over his sermon, holding the pages close to his face so he could see the words. He was extremely nearsighted and read each carefully chosen phrase with an unimposing monotone voice. But God’s Spirit moved through Jonathan Edwards’ preaching to fan the revival fires of the First Great Awakening and bring thousands to faith in Christ.

God often uses unexpected things to accomplish His perfect purposes. Writing about His plan to draw wayward humanity near through Jesus’ loving death for us on a cross, Paul concludes, “But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong” (1 CORINTHIANS 1:27). The world expected divine wisdom to look like our own and to come with irresistible force. Instead, Jesus came humbly and gently to save us from our sins and so became for us “wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption” (V. 30).

The eternal and all-wise God became a human baby who would grow to adulthood and suffer and die and be raised to life in order to lovingly show us the way home to Him. He loves to use humble means and people to accomplish great things we could never achieve in our own strength. If we’re willing, He may even use us. - JAMES BANKS

불가능한 선물

시어머니의 생신에 드릴 완벽한 선물을 찾게 되어 기뻤습니다. 팔찌에는 어머니의 탄생석까지 끼워져 있었으니까요! 누군가를 위해 이렇게 완벽한 선물을 찾으면 언제나 아주 기쁩니다. 그러나 그 사람에게 필요한 선물이 우리의 능력 밖의 것이라면 어떻게 해야 할까요? 누군가에게 마음의 평화나 휴식, 인내심을 전해줄 수만 있다면 하고 바라는 사람들이 많을 것입니다. 선물로 사서 리본으로 포장만 할 수 있다면 말입니다!

이런 선물을 다른 사람에게 줄 수 있는 사람은 없습니다. 그러나 인간의 육체를 입은 하나님이신 예수님은 그를 믿는 사람들에게 그런 “불가능한” 선물 한 가지, 평화를 선물로 주십니다. 예수님은 제자들을 떠나 하늘로 올라가시기 전에 성령님을 약속하시며 제자들을 위로하셨습니다. 성령님이 “너희에게 모든 것을 가르치고 내가 너희에게 말한 모든 것을 생각나게 하리라”(요한복음 14:26)고 하셨습니다. 예수님은 그들의 마음이 괴로울 때나 두려울 때를 위해 지속적이고 변함없는 선물로 평화, 곧 예수님의 평화를 주셨습니다. 그분 자신이 하나님과의 평화, 다른 사람들과 함께 하는 평화이며 우리 내면의 평화입니다.

우리에게는 사랑하는 사람들이 바라는 더 많은 인내나 건강 증진을 도와줄 능력이 없을지도 모릅니다. 그리고 삶의 고난을 견디는 데 꼭 필요한 평안을 줄 능력도 우리에게는 없습니다. 그러나 우리 는 성령님의 인도를 받아 그들에게 참되고 영원한 평화를 주시고 구현하신 예수님의 이야기를 전해줄 수 있습니다.

AN IMPOSSIBLE GIFT

I was elated to find the perfect gift for my mother-in-law’s birthday: the bracelet even contained her birthstone! Finding that perfect gift for someone is always an utter delight. But what if the gift the individual needs is beyond our power to give. Many of us wish we could give someone peace of mind, rest, or even patience. If only those could be purchased and wrapped with a bow!

These types of gifts are impossible for one person to give to another. Yet Jesus—God in human flesh—does give those who believe in Him one such “impossible” gift: the gift of peace. Before ascending to heaven and leaving the disciples, Jesus comforted them with the promise of the Holy Spirit: He “will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (JOHN 14:26). He offered them peace—His peace—as an enduring, unfailing gift for when their hearts were troubled or when they were experiencing fear. He, Himself, is our peace with God, with others, and within.

We may not have the ability to give our loved ones the extra measure of patience or improved health they desire. Nor is it within our power to give them the peace we all desperately need to bear up under the struggles of life. But we can be led by the Spirit to speak to them about Jesus, the giver and embodiment of true and lasting peace. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

신뢰하기

어느 겨울 아침 블라인드를 열어보니 놀라운 광경이 보였습니다. 짙은 안개였는데, 기상예보관은 이것을 “얼음 안개”라 불렀습니다. 우리 지역에 드문 이 안개에 이어 더 놀라운 소식이 하나 더 있었습니다. 이어지는 예보를 들어보니 “한 시간 후에는” 파란 하늘에 햇살이 비친다는 것이었습니다. 나는 남편에게 “말도 안 돼요. 지금 한치 앞도 안보이는데.” 라고 말했습니다. 그러나 아니나 다를까, 한 시간도 안 되어 안개가 걷히고 하늘은 밝고 청명한 푸른색으로 바뀌었습니다.

창가에 선 채로 나는 내 삶에서 안개 밖에 보이지 않을 때 내 믿음이 어떠했는지를 생각해보았습니다. 그리고 남편에게 물었습니다. “나는 눈에 보이는 만큼만 하나님을 믿는 게 아닐까요?”

웃시야 왕이 죽고 부패한 통치자들이 유다를 다스렸을 때 이사야도 비슷한 질문을 했습니다. ‘우리는 누구를 신뢰해야 합니까?’ 하나님은 이사야에게 매우 놀라운 환상을 보여주심으로써 앞으로의 더 나은 날들을 위해 지금 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있다는 확신을 주셨습니다. 이에 이사야는 “주께서 심지가 견고한 자를 평강하고 평강하도록 지키시리니 이는 그가 주를 신뢰함이니이다”(이사야 26:3)라고 찬양하며, 이어서 “너희는 여호와를 영원히 신뢰하라 주 여호와는 영원한 반석이심이로다”(4절)라고 했습니다.

우리 마음이 하나님께 고정되어 있으면 안개가 자욱하고 혼란스러운 때에도 하나님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다. 지금은 분명히 보이지 않을지 몰라도, 하나님을 신뢰하면 그분의 도움이 우리에게 찾아온다는 것을 확신할 수 있습니다.

YIELDING TO TRUST

Opening the blinds one winter morning, I faced a shocking sight. A wall of fog. “Freezing fog,” the weather forecaster called it. Rare for our location, this fog came with an even bigger surprise: a later forecast for blue skies and sunshine—“in one hour.” “Impossible,” I told my husband. “We can barely see one foot ahead.” But sure enough, in less than an hour, the fog had faded, the sky yielding to a sunny, clear blue.

Standing at a window, I pondered my level of trust when I can only see fog in life. I asked my husband, “Do I only trust God for what I can already see?”

When King Uzziah died and some corrupt rulers came to power in Judah, Isaiah asked a similar question. Whom can we trust? God responded by giving Isaiah a vision so remarkable that it convinced the prophet that He can be trusted in the present for better days ahead. As Isaiah praised, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (ISAIAH 26:3). The prophet added, “Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal” (V. 4).

When our minds are fixed on God, we can trust Him even during foggy and confusing times. We might not see it clearly now, but if we trust God, we can be assured His help is on the way. - PATRICIA RAYBON

알며 사랑하며

스포츠기자 조나단 챠크스는 “내 아들과 당신은 잘 아는 사이인가요?” 라는 제목의 기사에서 말기암을 앓고 있는 자신의 모습과 다른 사람들이 아내와 어린 아들을 보살펴 주기를 바라는 마음을 감동깊게 썼습니다. 34세의 그는 죽기 불과 6개월 전에 이 기사를 썼습니다. 청년 시절에 아버지를 여읜 예수님을 믿는 신자 챠크스는 과부와 고아들을 돌보라고 하는 성경구절들(출애굽기 22:22; 이사야 1:17; 야고보서 1:27)을 나누면서, 친구들을 향해서는 이렇게 썼습니다. “내가 천국에서 여러분을 만나면 한 가지만 물어보겠습니다. 내 아들과 아내에게 잘 해 주었나요?... 내 아들과 당신은 ‘잘 아는 사이’인가요?”

다윗 왕은 “[그가 사랑하는 친구] 요나단으로 말미암아 은총을 베풀, 사울의 집에 아직도 남은 사람이 있는지”(사무엘하 9:1) 물었습니다. 그러자 사고(4:4 참조)로 “다리를 저는”(3절) 요나단의 아들 므비보셋이 왕 앞에 불려 나왔습니다. 다윗이 그에게 말했습니다. “내가 반드시 너의 아버지 요나단으로 말미암아 네게 은총을 베풀리라 내가 네 할아버지 사울의 모든 밭을 다 네게 도로 주겠고 또 너는 항상 내 상에서 떡을 먹을지니라”(9:7). 다윗은 므비보셋을 사랑으로 보살폈으며, 시간이 지나면서 왕은 그를 진정으로 ‘잘 알게’ 되었을 것입니다(19:24-30 참조).

예수님은 우리에게 주님이 우리를 사랑하시는 모습 그대로 다른 사람들을 사랑하라고 요구하셨습니다(요한복음 13:34). 예수님이 우리 안에서, 우리를 통해 일하시듯 우리도 사람들을 진정으로 더 잘 알아가고 사랑합시다.

KNOWING AND LOVING

In the powerful article “Does My Son Know You?” sportswriter Jonathan Tjarks wrote of his battle with terminal cancer and his desire for others to care well for his wife and young son. The thirty-four-year-old wrote the piece just six months prior to his death. Tjarks, a believer in Jesus whose father had died when he was a young adult, shared Scriptures that speak of care for widows and orphans (EXODUS 22:22; ISAIAH 1:17; JAMES 1:27). And in words directed to his friends, he wrote, “When I see you in heaven, there’s only one thing I’m going to ask—Were you good to my son and my wife? . . . Does my son know you?”

King David wondered if there was “anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom [he could] show kindness for [his dear friend] Jonathan’s sake” (2 SAMUEL 9:1). A son of Jonathan, Mephibosheth, who was “lame in both feet” (V. 3) due to an accident (SEE 4:4), was brought to the king. David said to him, “I will surely show you kind- ness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table” (9:7). David showed loving care for Mephibosheth, and it’s likely that in time the king truly got to know him (SEE 19:24–30).

Jesus has called us to love others just as He loves us (JOHN 13:34). As He works in and through us, let’s truly get to know and love them well. - TOM FELTEN

내 마음의 눈을 뜨게 하소서

2001년 미숙아로 태어난 크리스토퍼 더플리가 위기를 넘겨 살아남아 의사들을 놀라게 했습니다. 그 아기는 생후 5개월에 위탁가정에 맡겨졌다가 후에 이모 가족에 입양되었습니다. 크리스토퍼가 네 살 때 앞을 못 보고 자폐증도 있었지만 한 선생님이 그가 절대 음감을 가졌다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 6년 후 크리스토퍼는 교회 강단에 서서 “내 마음의 눈을 뜨게 하소서”라는 찬양을 불렀습니다. 그 영상은 온라인에서 수백 만회 접속되었습니다. 2020년 그는 장애인을 위해 일하고 싶다는 목표를 밝혔습니다. 마음의 눈을 떠 하나님의 계획을 보게 되면 무한한 가능성이 있다는 것을 그는

바울 사도는 에베소 교회의 담대한 믿음을 칭찬했습니다(에베소서 1:15-16). 그는 하나님께서 “지혜와 계시의 영”을 그들에게 주셔서 “하나님을 잘 알게 하시기를” 간구했습니다(17절). 그들의 마음의 눈을 “밝혀” 혹은 열어, 하나님이 그의 백성에게 약속하신 소망과 기업을 알게 해달라고 기도했습니다 (18절).

우리에게 하나님을 보여 달라고 간구할 때 우리는 하나님을 더 알게 되고, 확신을 갖고 그분의 이름과 능력과 권위를 선포할 수 있습니다(19-23절). 우리 마음의 눈을 계속 뜨게 해 주시기를 하나님께 간구하면서, 예수님을 믿는 믿음과 모든 하나님의 백성에 대한 사랑으로 우리는 하나님의 무한한 가능성을 증명하며 살 수 있습니다.

OPEN THE EYES OF MY HEART

In 2001, a premature baby named Christopher Duffley surprised doctors by surviving. At five months old, he entered the foster care system until his aunt’s family adopted him. A teacher realized four-year-old Christopher, though blind and diagnosed with autism, had perfect pitch. Six years later at church, Christopher stood onstage and sang, “Open the Eyes of My Heart.” The video reached millions online. In 2020, Christopher shared his goals of serving as a disability advocate. He continues to prove that possibilities are limitless with the eyes of his heart open to God’s plan.

The apostle Paul commended the church in Ephesus for their bold faith (EPHESIANS 1:15–16). He asked God to give them “the Spirit of wisdom and revelation” so they would “know him better” (V. 17). He prayed that their eyes would be “enlightened,” or opened, so they would understand the hope and inheritance God promised His people (V. 18).

As we ask God to reveal Himself to us, we can know Him more and can declare His name, power, and authority with confidence (VV. 19–23). With faith in Jesus and love for all God’s people, we can live in ways that prove His limitless possibilities while asking Him to keep opening the eyes of our hearts. - XOCHITL DIXON

상처 입은 자들을 위한 소망

“대부분의 사람들은 다른 사람 눈에 보이지 않거나 이해할 수 없는 상처를 안고 살아갑니다.” 정신 건강 문제로 2020년 정규 시즌을 포기했던 메이저리그 야구선수 안드렐튼 시몬스가 이렇게 마음 속 깊은 이야기를 솔직히 털어놓았습니다. 시몬스는 자신의 결정에 대해 이야기하면서, 그의 이야기를 사람들과 나누어 비슷한 어려움을 겪는 사람들에게 격려가 되고, 또 다른 사람들에게 긍휼히 여기는 마음을 갖게 해주고 싶었다고 했습니다.

HOPE FOR THE HURTING

“Most people carry scars that others can’t see or understand.” Those deeply honest words came from Major League Baseball player Andrelton Simmons, who opted out of the end of the 2020 regular season due to mental health struggles. Reflecting on his decision, Simmons felt he needed to share his story to encourage others facing similar challenges and to remind others to show compassion.

Invisible scars are those deep hurts and wounds that can’t be seen but still cause very real pain and suffering. In Psalm 6, David wrote of his own deep struggle—penning painfully raw and honest words. He was “in agony” (V. 2) and “deep anguish” (V. 3). He was “worn out” from groaning, and his bed was drenched with tears (V. 6). While David doesn’t share the cause of his suffering, many of us can relate to his pain.

We can also be encouraged by the way David responded to his pain. In the midst of his overwhelming suffering, David cried out to God. Honestly pouring out his heart, he prayed for healing (V. 2), res­cue (V. 4), and mercy (V. 9). Even with the question “How long?” (V. 3) lingering over his situation, David remained confident that God “heard [his] cry for mercy” (V. 9) and would act in His time (V. 10).

Because of who our God is, there is always hope.

혹 #슬로우패션에 대해 들어 보셨습니까? 이 해시태그는 저가로 만들어 얼마 안 입고 버리는 “패스트 패션” 의류산업에 대항하여 나온 새로운 운동입니다. 패스트 패션에서는 옷이 점포에 들어오자마자 곧 유행이 지나가버려 어떤 브랜드들은 매년 엄청난 양의 상품을 그대로 폐기합니다.

슬로우 패션 운동은 사람들이 천천히, 그리고 다른 방식으로 사는 것을 권합니다. 항상 최신 유행을 따라가려는 강박감에 이끌리는 대신, 몇 벌을 사더라도 오래 입을 수 있는 질 좋고 윤리적으로 근거가 있는 품목들을 사라고 권장합니다.

나는 #슬로우패션의 초대에 대해 되돌아 보다가, 내 삶에서 항상 최신 유행에서 만족을 얻으려 하는 “패스트 패션” 사고 방식에 빠져 있는 것은 없는지 생각해 보았습니다. 그러나 바울은 골로새서 3장에서 예수님 안에서의 진정한 변화는 손쉬운 방법이나 유행을 따라 되는 것이 아니라고 말합니다. 그것은 평생을 거쳐 그리스도 안에서 조용히 점진적으로 이루어지는 변화입니다.

SLOW-FASHIONED GRACE

Have you heard of #slowfashion? The hashtag captures a movement focused on resisting “fast fashion”—an industry dominated by cheaply made and quickly disposed of clothes. In fast fashion, clothes are out of style nearly as quickly as they’re in the stores—with some brands disposing of large quantities of their products every year.

The slow fashion movement encourages people to slow down and take a different approach. Instead of being driven by the need to always have the latest look, slow fashion encourages us to select fewer well-made and ethically sourced items that will last. As I reflected on #slowfashion’s invitation, I found myself wondering about other ways I fall into a “fast fashion” way of thinking—always looking for fulfillment in the latest trend. In Colossians 3, however, Paul says finding true transformation in Jesus isn’t a quick fix or a fad. It’s a lifetime of quiet, gradual transformation in Christ.

Instead of needing to clothe ourselves with the world’s latest status symbols, we can exchange our striving for the Spirit’s clothing of “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (V. 12). We can learn patience with each other on the slow journey of Christ transforming our hearts—a journey that leads to lasting peace (V. 15). - MONICA LA ROSE

WISDOM WE NEED

In his monumental book The Great Influenza, John M. Barry recounts the story of the 1918 flu epidemic. Barry reveals how health officials, rather than being caught off guard, anticipated a massive outbreak. They feared that World War I, with hundreds of thousands of troops crammed into trenches and moving across borders, would unleash new viruses. But this knowledge was useless to stop the devastation. Powerful leaders, beating the drums of war, rushed toward violence. And epidemiologists estimate that fifty million people died in the epidemic, adding to the roughly twenty million killed in the war’s carnage.

We’ve proven over and again that our human knowledge will never be enough to rescue us from evil (PROVERBS 4:14–16). Though we’ve amassed immense knowledge and present remarkable insights, we still can’t stop the pain we inflict on one another. We can’t halt “the way of the wicked,” this foolish, repetitive path that leads to “deep darkness.” Despite our best knowledge, we really have no idea “what makes [us] stumble” (V. 19).

That’s why we must “get wisdom, get understanding” (V. 5). Wisdom teaches us what to do with knowledge. And true wisdom, this wisdom we desperately require, comes from God.

선택

친한 친구가 세상을 떠나고 몇 주 안 지나 친구의 어머니와 이야기를 나누었습니다. 아직 애도 기간인데 어머니에게 잘 지내시냐고 묻는 것이 적절치 않게 느껴져 망설였습니다. 그러나 주저함을 뒤로하고 어떻게 견디고 계시는지 간단히 물었습니다. 어머니는 “있잖아, 나는 기쁨을 선택했단다.”라고 대답했습니다.

그날 친구 어머니의 말은 삶의 어려운 상황을 극복하려고 애쓰던 나에게 도움이 되었습니다. 또한 신명기 끝에서 모세가 이스라엘 백성에게 했던 명령도 생각나게 해주었습니다. 모세가 죽기 바로 전 이스라엘 백성이 약속의 땅에 들어가기 전에 하나님은 그들에게 선택권이 있음을 알기를 원하셨습니다. 모세는 말했습니다. “내가 생명과 사망을... 네 앞에 두었은즉 생명을 택하라” (신명기 30:19). 그들은 하나님의 법에 순종하며 잘 살 수도 있고, 하나님을 떠나 “사망과 화”(15절)의 결과를 안고 살 수도 있었습니다.

우리도 어떻게 살 것인지 선택해야 합니다. 우리의 삶을 향한 하나님의 약속을 믿고 신뢰하여 기쁨을 선택할 수도 있고, 아니면 삶의 부정적이고 어려운 것들에 마음을 두는 쪽을 선택하여 기쁨을 빼앗길 수도 있습니다. 훈련도 필요하고 성령님의 도우심에 의지해야 하지만, 우리는 “하나님을 사랑하는 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이룬다”(로마서 8:28)는 것을 알고 기쁨을 선택할 수 있습니다.

A CHOICE

A few weeks after the death of a dear friend, I spoke with her mom. I was hesitant to ask how she was doing because I thought it was an inappropriate question; she was grieving. But I pushed aside my reluctance and simply asked how she was holding up. Her reply: “Listen, I choose joy.”

Her words ministered to me that day as I struggled to push beyond some unpleasant circumstances in my own life. And her words also reminded me of Moses’ edict to the Israelites at the end of Deuteronomy. Just before Moses’ death and the Israelites’ entrance into the promised land, God wanted them to know that they had a choice. Moses said, “I have set before you life and death . . . . Now choose life” (DEUTERONOMY 30:19). They could follow God’s laws and live well, or they could turn away from Him and live with the consequences of “death and destruction” (V. 15).

We must choose how to live too. We can choose joy by believ- ing and trusting in God’s promises for our lives. Or we can choose to focus on the negative and difficult parts of our journeys, allowing them to rob us of joy. It will take practice and relying on the Holy Spirit for help, but we can choose joy—knowing that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him” (ROMANS 8:28). - KATARA PATTON
