잿더미에서 아름다움으로

콜로라도 역사상 가장 컸던 마샬 화재가 있고 난 후 한 사역팀이 피해자 가족들을 도와 잿더미 가운데서 귀중품을 찾는 일에 나섰습니다. 가족들은 아직 남아 있기를 바라는 귀중품들에 대해 말했지만, 실제로 남아 있는 것은 거의 없었습니다. 한 남자는 자기 결혼 반지를 위층 침실에 있는 옷장 위에 두었다고 차분히 말했습니다. 그러나 지금 집은 사라졌고 집 안에 있던 물건들은 다 타거나 녹아서 지하실 바닥에 잔해로 내려앉은 상태였습니다. 수색하는 사람들이 침실이 있었던 그 구석에서 반지를 찾아보았지만 찾지 못했습니다.

이사야 선지자는 임박한 멸망으로 무너져 평지가 될 예루살렘에 대해 슬픔에 잠겨 기록했습니다. 이처럼 우리가 쌓아온 삶이 잿더미가 된 느낌이 들 때가 있습니다. 우리는 감정적으로나 영적으로 아무것도 남지 않았다고 느낍니다. 그러나 이사야는 “[여호와께서] 나를 보내사 마음이 상한 자를 고치며... 모든 슬픈 자를 위로하라”(이사야 61:1-2)고 하셨다며 희망을 전합니다. “[여호와께서] 화관을 주어 그 재를 대신[하겠다]”(3절)고 하시면서, 하나님은 우리의 비극을 영광으로 바꾸어 주십니다. 그리고 “오래 황폐하였던 곳을 다시 쌓을 것이며 대대로 무너져 있던 것들을 중수”(4절)하겠다고 약속하십니다. 그 마샬 화재 현장에서 반대쪽의 잿더미를 수색하던 한 여성이 그곳에서 반지 함에 그대로 들어있는 그 남편의 결혼 반지를 찾아냈습니다. 당신이 절망해 있을 때에도 하나님은 당신의 잿더미 속으로 손을 뻗어 진정 소중한 한 가지를 꺼내십니다. 바로 당신입니다.

BEAUTY FOR ASHES

In the aftermath of the Marshall Fire, the most destructive fire in Colorado history, one ministry offered to help families search through the ashes for valuable items. Family members mentioned precious objects they hoped were still preserved. Very little was. One man spoke tenderly of his wedding ring. He’d placed it on his dresser in the upstairs bedroom. The house now gone, its contents had charred or melted into a single layer of debris at the basement level. Searchers looked for the ring in that same corner where the bedroom had been—without success.

The prophet Isaiah wrote mournfully of the impending destruction of Jerusalem, which would be leveled. Likewise, there are times we feel the life we’ve built has been reduced to ashes. We feel we have nothing left, emotionally and spiritually. But Isaiah offers hope: “He [God] has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted . . . to comfort all who mourn” (ISAIAH 61:1–2). God converts our tragedy into glory: “[He will] bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes” (V. 3). He promises to “rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated” (V. 4).

At that Marshall Fire site, one woman searched the ashes on the opposite side. There, still in its case, she unearthed the husband’s wedding ring. In your despair, God reaches into your ashes and pulls out the one truly precious thing. You. - KENNETH PETERSEN

누구나 하나의 문으로

나의 어린 시절 동네 음식점의 규범은 1950년대 후반과 1960년대 초반의 사회와 인종에 관한 관행을 그대로 따랐습니다. 조리사였던 메리와 접시를 닦는 나 같은 주방 도우미들은 흑인이었습니다. 그러나 식당 내의 고객들은 모두 백인이었습니다. 흑인 고객도 음식을 주문할 수는 있었지만 뒷문에서 음식을 받아 가야 했습니다. 그런 정책들은 그 시대의 흑인들을 향한 불평등한 대우를 더욱 강화시켰습니다. 그 이후로 오래도록 진전이 있었지만, 하나님의 형상으로 만들어진 인간인 우리가 서로를 대하는 방식에는 여전히 개선해야 할 부분들이 있습니다.

ONE DOOR FOR ALL

The protocols at the restaurant in my childhood neighborhood were consistent with social and racial dynamics in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The kitchen helpers—Mary, the cook, and dishwashers like me—were Black; however, the in-restaurant patrons were White. Black customers could order food, but they had to pick it up at the back door. Such policies reinforced the unequal treatment of Blacks in that era. Though we’ve come a long way since then, we still have room for growth in how we relate to each other as people made in the image of God.

Passages of Scripture like Romans 10:8–13 help us to see that all are welcome in the family of God; there’s no back door. All enter the same way—through belief in Jesus’ death for cleansing and forgiveness. The Bible word for this transformative experience is saved (VV. 9, 13). Your social situation or racial status or that of others doesn’t factor into the equation. “As Scripture says, ‘Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.’ For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him” (VV. 11–12). 낙심하지 말라

내어머니 도로시가 건강이 좋으셨을 때가 언제였는지 기억도 잘 나지 않습니다. 어머니는 여러 해 동안 불안정성 당뇨를 앓아 혈당 수치가 매우 불규칙했습니다. 합병증이 생기면서 신장이 손상되어 영구적으로 투석해야 했습니다. 신경 장애에 골절상까지 입어 휠체어를 타게 되었고, 시력도 실명에 가깝게 나빠지기 시작했습니다.

그러나 어머니의 육신은 약해져도 기도 생활은 점점 활기를 더해갔습니다. 어머니는 다른 사람들이 하나님의 사랑을 알고 경험하게 해달라고 몇 시간씩 기도하셨습니다. 귀한 성경말씀들은 어머니에게 점점 더 달게 느껴졌습니다. 어머니는 시력을 잃기 전 마조리 이모에게 편지를 쓰며 고린도후서 4장의 다음 말씀을 언급하셨습니다. “우리가 낙심하지 아니하노니 우리의 겉사람은 낡아지나 우리의 속사람은 날로 새로워지도다”(16절).

바울 사도는 우리가 얼마나 쉽게 “낙심”하는 지를 알고 있었습니다. 그는 고린도후서 11장에서 위험하고 고통스럽고 궁핍했던 그의 삶을 묘사하면서도 (23–29절), 그런 “고난들”을 일시적인 것으로 보았습니다. 그리고 우리에게 보이는 것뿐 아니라 보이지 않는 것, 곧 ‘영원한’ 것에 대해서도 생각하라고 권면했습니다(4:17–18).

우리에게 어떤 일들이 생긴다 해도 사랑이 많으신 하나님 아버지는 우리의 속사람을 날마다 새롭게 하십니다. 하나님이 우리와 함께 하심은 분명합니다. 하나님이 선물로 주신 기도를 할 때 하나님은 우리의 숨결이 닿을 정도로 가까이 계십니다. 그리고 우리를 강건하게 하시고 소망과 기쁨을 주신다는 하나님의 약속은 지금도 진리입니다.

DON’T LOSE HEART

I don’t remember a time when my mom Dorothy was in good health. For many years as a brittle diabetic, her blood sugar was wildly erratic. Complications developed and her damaged kidneys necessitated permanent dialysis. Neuropathy and broken bones resulted in the use of a wheelchair. Her eyesight began to regress toward blindness.

But as her body failed her, Mom’s prayer life grew more vigor- ous. She spent hours praying for others to know and experience the love of God. Precious words of Scripture grew sweeter to her. Before her eyesight faded, she wrote a letter to her sister Marjorie including words from 2 Corinthians 4: “We do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” (V. 16).

The apostle Paul knew how easy it is to “lose heart.” In 2 Corinthians 11, he describes his life—one of danger, pain, and deprivation (VV. 23–29). Yet he viewed those “troubles” as temporary. And he encouraged us to think not only about what we see but also about what we can’t see—that which is eternal (4:17–18).

Despite what’s happening to us, our loving Father is continuing our inner renewal every day. His presence with us is sure. Through the gift of prayer, He’s only a breath away. And His promises to strengthen us and give us hope and joy remain true. - CINDY HESS KASPER

하나님께 맡김

하나님은 스스로 돕는 자를 도우시는 것이 아니라 하나님을 믿고 의지하는 자들을 도우십니다. 복음을 기초로 제작하여 큰 성공을 거두었던 TV연속극 ‘선택받은 사람들’에서 예수님 역을 맡았던 조나단 로우미는 2018년 5월에 그것을 깨달았습니다. 로스앤젤레스에서 8년을 살았던 로우미는 경제적으로 거의 파산하여 겨우 하루 하루 먹을 음식 밖에 없었고 눈에 보이는 일거리도 없었습니다. 그는 어찌할 바를 몰라 하나님께 절박한 심정을 토로하며 자신의 직업 문제를 하나님께 맡겨 드렸습니다. “나는 정말 말 그대로 ‘다 맡깁니다. 다 맡깁니다.’라고 [기도했습니다].” 그날 늦게 그의 우편함에는 네 개의 수표가 들어 있었고, 3개월 후에는 ‘선택받은 사람들’ 이라는 연속극에서 예수님 역할을 맡게 되었습니다. 로우미는 하나님은 그분을 신뢰하는 자들을 도우신다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

시편 기자는 “악을 행하는 자들” 때문에 시기하며 마음 조리기 보다는 (시편 37:1), 모든 것을 하나님께 맡기라고 권면합니다. 우리 일상 활동의 중심에 하나님을 모시고 “[여호와를] 의뢰하고 선을 행하며,” “[여호와를] 기뻐하고”(3–4절), 우리의 모든 소원과 문제, 걱정, 삶에서 매일 일어나는 일들을 하나님께 맡겨드리면, 하나님은 우리를 인도하시며 평안을 주실 것입니다(5-6절). 예수님을 믿는 우리는 어떤 삶을 살아야 할지를 예수님이 결정하시도록 하는 것이 정말 중요합니다.

하나님께 맡겨 드리고 신뢰합시다. 그럴 때 하나님께서 역사하셔서 꼭 필요한 최선의 일을 행하실 것입니다.

SURRENDERING TO GOD

God doesn’t help those who help themselves; He helps those who trust in and rely on Him. Jonathan Roumie—the actor who plays Jesus in the successful TV series The Chosen, which is based on the Gospels—realized this in May of 2018. Roumie had been living in Los Angeles for eight years, was nearly broke, had enough food just for the day, and had no work in sight. Not knowing how he would make it, the actor poured out his heart and surrendered his career to God. “I literally [prayed] the words, ‘I surrender. I surrender.’ ” Later that day, he found four checks in the mail and three months later, he was cast for the role of Jesus in The Chosen. Roumie found that God will help those who trust in Him.

Rather than being envious of and fretting over those “who are evil” (PSALM 37:1), the psalmist invites us to surrender everything to God. When we center our daily activities on Him, “trust in [Him] and do good,” “take delight in [Him]” (VV. 3–4), and surrender to Him all our desires, problems, anxieties, and the daily events of our lives, God will direct us and give us peace (VV. 5–6). As believ- ers in Jesus, it’s vital for us to let Him determine what our lives should be.

위험에 빠져

1892년 콜레라에 감염된 한 주민의 실수로 엘베 강을 통해 독일 함부르크 상수도 전체가 오염되어, 몇 주 만에 만 명의 시민이 사망했습니다. 그보다 8년 전에 독일의 미생물학자 로베르트 코흐는 콜레라가 수인성 전염병인 것을 발견했습니다. 코흐의 발견으로 유럽의 여러 대도시의 당국자들은 물을 보호하기 위해 여과 시스템을 설치했지만, 함부르크 당국은 아무 일도 하지 않았습니다. 그들이 비용 문제를 거론하며 또 불확실한 과학이라고 주장하면서 그 분명한 경고를 무시하는 사이, 도시는 재앙을 향해 달려가고 있었습니다.

잠언에는 문제를 보고도 아무런 조치를 취하지 않는 사람들에 대한 말씀이 많이 있습니다. “슬기로운 자는 재앙을 보면 숨어 피한다”(27:12)고 했습니다. 위험이 다가온다는 것을 하나님이 보여주실 때 그에 대한 조치를 취하는 것은 상식입니다. 우리는 현명하게 진로를 변경하거나 하나님이 주시는 적절한 예방책으로 스스로를 준비하면서, 하여간 ‘무언가’를 합니다. 아무것도 안 하는 것은 정말 미친 짓입니다. 그러나 우리는 경고 신호를 보지 못해서 재난을 향해 달려갈 수 있습니다. “어리석은 사람은 그대로 나아가다가 어려움을 당합니다”(12절, 현대인의 성경).

성경말씀과 예수님의 삶을 통해 하나님은 우리가 따라야 할 길을 보여주시고 반드시 마주치게 될 문제에 대해 경고하십니다. 우리가 어리석으면 위험을 향해 급하게 달려갈 것입니다. 그러나 하나님께서 은혜로 우리를 이끄셔서, 우리 모두 그분의 지혜에 주의를 기울여 방향을 바꾸게 되기를 소원합니다.

HEADLONG INTO DANGER

In 1892, a resident with cholera accidentally transmitted the disease via the Elbe River to Hamburg, Germany’s entire water supply. Within weeks, ten thousand citizens died. Eight years earlier, German microbiologist Robert Koch had made a discovery: cholera was waterborne. Koch’s revelation prodded officials in large European cities to invest in filtration systems to protect their water. Hamburg authorities, however, had done nothing. Citing costs and alleging dubious science, they’d ignored clear warnings while their city careened toward catastrophe.

The book of Proverbs has a lot to say about those of us who see trouble yet refuse to act. “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions” (27:12 NLT). When God helps us see danger ahead, it’s common sense to take action to address the danger. We wisely change course. Or we ready ourselves with appropriate precautions that He provides. But we do something. To do nothing is sheer lunacy. We can all fail to miss the warning signs, however, and careen toward disaster. “The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences” (V. 12 NLT).

In Scripture and in the life of Jesus, God shows us the path to follow and warns us of trouble we’ll surely face. If we’re foolish, we’ll barrel ahead, headlong into danger. Instead, as He leads us by His grace, may we heed His wisdom and change course. - WINN COLLIER

그리스도, 우리의 참된 빛

“빛이 보이는 쪽으로 가면 돼!” 얼마 전 주일 오후에 큰 도시의 한 병원에서 출구를 힘들게 찾으면서 남편이 말했습니다. 친구 병문안을 갔다가 나오면서 승강기에서 내렸는데 주말이라 그런지 밖으로 나가는 정문 쪽 방향을 물어볼 사람이 없었습니다. 나가기만 하면 콜로라도의 밝은 햇살도 볼 텐데 말입니다. 어스름한 복도를 배회하다 마침내 당황해하는 우리 모습을 본 한 남자가 “여기 복도는 다 비슷하게 생겼어요. 그런데 출구는 이쪽입니다” 하며 안내해 주었습니다. 우리는 그의 안내로 출구를 찾아 환한 햇빛이 있는 곳으로 나올 수 있었습니다.

예수님은 믿음 없이 길 잃고 헤매는 사람들에게 영적인 어둠에서 나와 그분을 좇으라고 부르셨습니다. “나는 세상의 빛이니 나를 따르는 자는 어둠에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻으리라”(요한복음 8:12). 예수님의 빛이 우리의 마음과 앞 길을 비추면 그 빛으로 걸림돌과 죄와 가려진 부분을 볼 수 있게 되고, 우리 삶에서 그런 어두운 부분을 없애 달라고 주님께 맡겨드릴 수 있습니다. 광야에서 이스라엘 백성을 인도했던 불기둥처럼 그리스도의 빛은 우리를 하나님의 임재와 보호와 인도하심으로 이끌어줍니다.

요한은 예수님이 “참 빛”(요한복음 1:9)이시며 “어둠이 그 빛을 이기지 못하였다”(5절, 새번역)고 설명합니다. 우리는 인생을 배회하지 말고, 길을 밝히시는 주님의 인도를 구할 수 있습니다.

CHRIST, OUR TRUE LIGHT

“Go to the light!” That’s what my husband advised as we struggled to find our way out of a big city hospital on a recent Sunday afternoon. We’d visited a friend, and when we exited an elevator, we couldn’t find anyone during weekend hours to point us to the front doors—and the brilliant Colorado sunlight. Roaming around half-lit hallways, we finally encountered a man who saw our confusion. “These hallways all look the same,” he said. “But the exit’s this way.” With his directions, we found the exit doors—leading, indeed, to the bright sunlight.

Jesus invited confused, lost unbelievers to follow Him out of their spiritual darkness. “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (JOHN 8:12). In His light, we can see stumbling blocks, sin, and blind spots, allowing Him to remove such darkness from our lives as He shines His light into our hearts and on our path. Like the pillar of fire that led the Israelites through the wilderness, Christ’s light brings us God’s presence, protection, and guidance.

As John explained, Jesus is “the true light” (JOHN 1:9) and “the darkness has not overcome it” (V. 5). Instead of wandering through life, we can seek Him for direction as He lights the way. - PATRICIA RAYBON

정원에서

아버지는 캠핑이나 낚시, 돌 수집 같은 것을 하시며 하나님이 만드신 자연에서 지내는 것을 좋아하셨습니다. 그리고 뒤뜰이나 정원에서 일하는 것도 즐기셨습니다. 그런데 그러기 위해서는 정말 많은 일을 해야 했습니다! 아버지는 많은 시간을 들여 가지치기, 괭이질, 씨앗이나 꽃 심기, 잡초 뽑기, 잔디 깎기, 뜰과 정원에 물주기를 하셨습니다. 그 결과 잘 정돈된 잔디와 맛있는 토마토, 아름다운 장미를 보는 보람도 있었습니다. 해마다 거의 밑동만 남기고 잘라준 장미는 다시 자라나 향기와 아름다움으로 우리의 감각을 만족시켜 주었습니다.

우리는 창세기에서 아담과 하와가 살면서 번성하며 하나님과 함께 했던 에덴동산에 대해 읽어서 압니다. 거기서 하나님은 “보기에 아름답고 먹기에 좋은 열매를 맺는 온갖 나무를 땅에서 자라게 하셨습니다”(창세기 2:9, 새번역). 그 완벽한 정원에는 아름답고 향기로운 꽃들도 있고, 아마 가시 없는 장미도 있지 않았을까 상상해 봅니다!

그러나 하나님께 반항한 아담과 하와는 그 동산에서 쫓겨나, 자신들의 동산에서 심고 가꾸면서 단단한 땅을 파고 가시와 싸우며 여러 어려움을 겪어야 했습니다(3:17-19, 23-24). 그럼에도 하나님은 여전히 그들을 돌보아 주셨습니다(21절). 그리고 하나님은 창조의 아름다움을 인류에게 그대로 남겨두어 인간의 마음이 하나님께로 향하게 하셨습니다(로마서 1:20). 하나님의 변함없는 사랑과 새로운 창조의 약속을 기억나게 해주는 정원의 꽃들은 희망과 위로의 상징입니다!

IN THE GARDEN

My dad loved being outdoors in God’s creation camping, fishing, and rock-hunting. He also enjoyed working in his yard and garden. But it took lots of work! He spent hours pruning, hoeing, planting seeds or flowers, pulling weeds, mowing the lawn, and watering the yard and garden. The results were worth it—a landscaped lawn, tasty tomatoes, and beautiful peace roses. Every year he pruned the roses close to the ground, and every year they grew back—filling the senses with their fragrance and beauty.

In Genesis, we read of the garden of Eden where Adam and Eve lived, thrived, and walked with God. There, God “made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food” (GENESIS 2:9). I imagine that perfect garden also included beautiful, sweet-smelling flowers—perhaps even roses minus the thorns!

After Adam and Eve’s rebellion against God, they were expelled from the garden and needed to plant and care for their own gardens, which meant breaking up hard ground, battling with thorns, and other challenges (3:17–19, 23–24). Yet God continued to provide for them (V. 21). And He didn’t leave humanity without the beauty
of creation to draw us to Him (ROMANS 1:20). The flowers in the garden remind us of God’s continued love and promise of a renewed creation—symbols of hope and comfort! - ALYSON KIEDA

맨 처음 할 일

달리기 경주처럼 아침이 시작되었습니다. 벌떡 일어나 그날 마쳐야 할 일들을 바로 시작했습니다. 아이들 학교에 데려다 주기. ‘완료’. 일 시작하기. ‘완료’. 나는 “해야 할 일”의 목록을 급히 써내려 갔습니다. 그 목록에는 개인적인 일과 직업의 일이 눈사태 같이 장황하게 뒤섞여 있었습니다.

“... 13. 글 편집하기. 14. 사무실 청소. 15. 전략팀 계획. 16. 기술 블로그 쓰기. 17. 지하실 청소. 18. 기도하기.”

나는 열 여덟 번째 할 일에 이르러서야 비로소 내게 하나님의 도움이 필요하다는 것을 기억할 수 있었습니다. 내가 스스로 분발하여 어떻게 하든 혼자서 해보려 했다는 사실을 그제서야 ‘문득 깨닫게’ 된 것입니다.

예수님은 우리의 하루 하루가 끊임없이 급한 상황들로 이어질 것을 미리 아시고 이렇게 가르쳐 주셨습니다. “너희는 먼저 [하나님의] 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더하시리라”(마태복음 6:33).

예수님의 말씀을 ‘명령’으로 듣는 것은 당연한 일입니다. 실제로 명령이 맞습니다. 그러나 더 좋은 것은 그것을 ‘초대’로 듣는 것입니다. 마태복음 6장 에서 예수님은 이 세상의 급한 걱정거리(25-32절)들을 바꾸어 매일 신뢰하는 삶을 살라고 우리를 초대하십니다. 하나님은 그분의 은혜로 우리의 모든 날들을 도와주십니다. 열 여덟 번째 목록까지 가서야 비로소 하나님의 관점으로 삶을 보는 것을 기억하게 되더라도 말입니다.

FIRST ON THE LIST

The morning commenced like a track meet. I practically jumped out of bed, launching into the teeth of the day’s deadlines. Get the kids to school. Check. Get to work. Check. I blasted full throttle into writing my “To Do” list, in which personal and professional tasks tumbled together in an avalanche-like litany:

“. . . 13. Edit article. 14. Clean office. 15. Strategic team planning. 16. Write tech blog. 17. Clean basement. 18. Pray.”

By the time I got to number eighteen, I’d remembered that I needed God’s help. But I’d gotten that far before it even occurred to me that I was going at it alone, trying to manufacture my own momentum.

Jesus knew. He knew our days would crash one into another, a sea of ceaseless urgency. So He instructs, “Seek first [God’s] kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (MATTHEW 6:33).

It’s natural to hear Jesus’ words as a command. And they are. But there’s more here—an invitation. In Matthew 6, Jesus invites us to exchange the world’s frantic anxiety (VV. 25–32) for a life of trust, day by day. God, by His grace, helps us all of our days—even when we get to number eighteen on our list before we remember to see life from His erspective. -

가진 재능을 그리스도를 위해 사용하라

‘바느질 명예의 전당’에 대해 들어보셨습니까? 2001년에 만들어진 이것은 “바느질 교육과 제품 개발을 통해 가내 재봉산업에 특별한 창의력으로 길이 남을 공로”를 세운 사람들을 기리고 있습니다. 여기에는 2005년에 헌정된 마사 풀런 같은 사람도 있는데, 그에 대해서는 “잠언 31장의 여인처럼... 자신의 힘과 영감과 축복이 어디서 오는지를 언제나 만인 앞에 드러내 말하였다”고 소개하고 있습니다.

21세기에 만들어진 이 ‘바느질 명예의 전당’이 만약 1세기경 이스라엘에서 만들어졌다면 아마도 다비다라는 여인이 그 명예의 전당에 올랐을 것입니다. 예수님을 믿는 다비다는 바느질로 옷을 지어 동네 가난한 과부들을 도왔던 사람이었습니다(사도행전 9:36, 39). 그러던 다비다가 병들어 죽자 제자들은 하나님이 베드로를 통해 기적을 행하실지 모른다는 생각으로 베드로에게 사람을 보냈습니다. 베드로가 도착하자 과부들은 눈물을 흘리며 다비다가 자기들을 위해 만들었던 속옷과 겉옷을 다 보여주었습니다(39절). 이 의복들은 다비다가 자기 마을의 가난한 사람들을 위해 “항상 선을 베풀었다”는 증거였습니다(36절). 다비다는 하나님의 권능으로 다시 살아났습니다.

하나님은 우리를 부르시고 또 재능을 주셔서 우리 공동체와 세상의 필요를 채우기 위해 그것들을 사용하십니다. 우리의 재능을 예수님 섬기는 일에 사용하고, 예수님이 우리의 사랑의 헌신을 사용하여 어떻게 사람들의 마음과 삶을 함께 꿰매 주시는지 살펴보도록 합시다(에베소서 4:16).

USE WHAT YOU HAVE FOR CHRIST

Ever heard of The Sewing Hall of Fame? Established in 2001, it recognizes people that have made “a lasting impact on the home sewing industry with unique and innovative contributions through sewing education and product development.” It includes individuals like Martha Pullen, inducted into the hall in 2005, who is described as “a Proverbs 31 woman who . . . never failed to publicly acknowledge the source of her strength, inspiration, and blessings.”

The Sewing Hall of Fame is a twenty-first-century invention, but had it been around during the first century in Israel, a woman named Tabitha might have been a lock for induction. Tabitha was a believer in Jesus and a seamstress who spent time sewing for poor widows in her community (ACTS 9:36, 39). After she became ill and died, disciples sent for Peter to see if God would work a miracle through him. When he arrived, weeping widows showed him robes and other clothing that Tabitha had made for them (V. 39). These clothes were evidence of her “always doing good” for the poor in her city (V. 36). By God’s power, Tabitha was restored to life.

God calls and equips us to use our skills to meet needs that are present in our community and world. Let’s release our skills into the service of Jesus and see how He will use our acts of love to stitch hearts and lives together (EPHESIANS 4:16). - MARVIN WILLIAMS

우리의 소망의 닻

주일학교 6학년 학생들에게 어두운 골목에서 종이 상자를 덮고 자는 사람들의 사진을 들어 보여주며 “이들에게 필요한 것은 무엇일까?” 라고 물었습니다. “음식이요.” 한 아이가 말했습니다. “돈이요.” 다른 아이가 대답했습니다. “안전한 장소입니다.” 한 남학생이 신중하게 말했습니다. 그러자 한 여학생이 “희망이요.”라고 말했습니다.

그 여학생은 “희망이란 좋은 일이 일어날 것을 기대하는 것”이라고 설명했습니다. 나는 그 학생이 좋은 일을 “기대하는” 것에 대해 말한 것이 흥미로웠는데, 그것은 살면서 어려울 때에 좋은 일을 기대하는 것이 쉽지 않기 때문입니다. 그럼에도 성경은 이 여학생과 같은 관점에서 희망을 말하고 있습니다. “믿음은 바라는 것들의 확신”(히브리서 11:1, 새번역)이라면, 예수님을 믿는 우리는 좋은 일이 일어나기를 기대할 수 있습니다.

OUR ANCHOR OF HOPE

I held up a picture of people sleeping under pieces of cardboard in a dim alley. “What do they need?” I asked my sixth grade Sunday school class. “Food,” someone said. “Money,” said another. “A safe place,” a boy said thoughtfully. Then one girl spoke up: “Hope.”

“Hope is expecting good things to happen,”she explained. I found it interesting that she talked about “expecting” good things when, due to challenges, it can be easy not to expect good things in life. The Bible nevertheless speaks of hope in a way that agrees with my student. If “faith is confidence in what we hope for” (HEBREWS 11:1), we who have faith in Jesus can expect good things to happen.

What is this ultimate good that believers in Christ can hope for with confidence?—“the promise of entering his rest” (4:1). For believers, God’s rest includes His peace, confidence of salvation, reliance on His strength, and assurance of a future heavenly home. The guarantee of God and the salvation Jesus offers is why hope can be our anchor, holding us fast in times of need (6:18–20). The world needs hope, indeed: God’s true and certain assurance that throughout good and bad times, He’ll have the final say and won’t fail us. When we trust in Him, we know that He’ll make all things right for us in His time. - KAREN HUANG
