가족으로 불러 주신 하나님

셔먼 스미스는 덜랜드 맥컬로우를 마이애미 대학의 미식축구 선수로 선발한 후, 그를 사랑하여 고아였던 덜랜드에게 아버지가 되어주었습니다. 셔먼을 매우 존경하게 된 덜랜드는 자기도 예전의 그와 같은 사람이 되는 것을 목표로 삼았습니다. 수십 년 후, 덜랜드는 자기를 낳은 어머니를 찾았는데 바로 그 생모로부터 그의 아버지 이름이 셔먼 스미스라는 충격적인 소식을 듣게 되었습니다. 그렇습니다. 바로 그 셔먼 스미스였습니다. 스미스 코치는 그에게 아들이 있었다는 사실에 놀랐고, 덜랜드도 자기가 바라던 모습의 아버지가 바로 자신의 생부라는 사실에 놀랐습니다!

다음에 그들이 만났을 때 셔먼은 덜랜드를 안아주며 “내 아들아”라고 불렀습니다. 덜랜드는 아버지로부터 그런 말을 난생 처음 들어보았습니다. 덜랜드는 셔먼이 ‘네가 내 아들인 것이 자랑스럽다’는 마음으로 그렇게 부른 것을 알기에 매우 감격했습니다.

우리도 우리 하나님 아버지의 완전하신 사랑에 매우 감격해야 합니다. 요한은 이렇게 기록합니다. “보라 아버지께서 어떠한 사랑을 우리에게 베푸사 하나님의 자녀라 일컬음을 받게 하셨는가”(요한1서 3:1). 셔먼 같은 사람이 그의 아버지일지도 모른다는 생각을 전혀 하지 않아 매우 놀랐던 덜랜드처럼 우리도 그 말씀에 너무 놀라 말문이 막힙니다. 그 말이 정말 사실일까요? 요한은 그렇다고 하면서 “우리가 그러하도다”(1절)라고 힘주어 말합니다.

당신이 예수님을 믿는다면, 그의 아버지이신 하나님이 당신의 아버지가 되십니다. 종종 세상에 홀로 남겨진 고아처럼 느껴질지 모르지만, 당신에게는 유일하시며 완벽하신 아버지가 계시고, 또 그분은 당신을 그분의 자녀로 자랑스럽게 부르십니다.

WELCOMED HOME BY GOD

After Sherman Smith recruited Deland McCullough to play American football for Miami University, he grew to love him and became the father Deland never had. Deland had great admiration for Sherman and aimed to become the man he was. Decades later, when Deland tracked down his birth mom, she shocked him with the news, “Your father’s name is Sherman Smith.” Yes, that Sherman Smith. Coach Smith was stunned to learn he had a son, and Deland was stunned that his father figure was literally his father!

The next time they met, Sherman hugged Deland and said, “My son.” Deland had never heard that from a father. He knew Sherman “was saying it from a place of ‘I’m proud. This is my son,’ ” and he was overwhelmed.

We too should be overwhelmed by the perfect love of our heavenly Father. John writes, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 JOHN 3:1). We’re as dumbfounded as Deland, who didn’t dare think someone like Sherman could be his dad. Is it really true? John insists, yes, “that is what we are!” (V. 1).

If you believe in Jesus, His Father is also your Dad. You may feel orphaned, alone in the world. But the truth is you have a Father— the only perfect One—and He’s proud to call you His child.

구조하시는 하나님

자비로운 한 자원봉사자가 그의 영웅적인 노력으로 “수호천사”라는 별명을 얻었습니다. 제이크 만나는 일터에서 태양전지판을 설치하고 있다가 실종된 다섯 살난 여자 아이를 찾는 긴급한 상황에 합류하게 되었습니다. 이웃 사람들이 각기 그들의 차고와 마당을 살펴보는 동안, 그는 근처 수풀 지역으로 향하여 거기서 수렁에 허리까지 빠져 있는 그 여자 아이를 발견했습니다. 그는 질퍽한 진흙 속으로 조심스럽게 걸어 들어가서 궁지에 빠진 아이를 끌어내어, 온통 젖었지만 아무런 상처 없는 그 아이를 감사해 하는 어머니 품에 다시 안겨주었습니다.

GOD’S RESCUE

A compassionate volunteer was called a “guardian angel” for his heroic efforts. Jake Manna was installing solar panels at a job site when he joined an urgent search to find a missing five-year-old girl. While neighbors searched their garages and yards, Manna took a path that led him into a nearby wooded area where he spotted the girl waist-deep in a marsh. He waded carefully into the sticky mud to pull her out of her predicament and return her, damp but unharmed, to her grateful mother.

Like that little girl, David also experienced deliverance. The singer “waited patiently” for God to respond to his heartfelt cries for mercy (PSALM 40:1). And He did. God leaned in, paid close attention to his cry for help and responded by rescuing him from the “mud and mire” of his circumstances (V. 2)—providing sure footing for David’s life. The past rescues from the muddy marsh of life reinforced his desire to sing songs of praise, to make God his trust in future circumstances and to share his story with others (VV. 3–4).

When we find ourselves in life challenges such as financial difficulties, marital turmoil, and feelings of inadequacy, let’s cry out to God and patiently wait for Him to respond (V. 1). He’s there, ready to help us in our time of need and give us a firm place to stand.

하나님의 아들 예수님의 빛 비추기

어머니와 내가 몹시 다툰 후, 어머니는 드디어 어머니 집에서 나와 만나자고 했습니다. 하지만 내 집에서 한 시간 이상 떨어진 어머니 집에 도착해보니 정작 어머니는 내가 도착하기 전에 떠나 집에
없었습니다. 화난 심정으로 어머니에게 쪽지를 썼다가 하나님이 사랑으로 대하라고 말씀하시는 것 같아 쪽지를 다시 고쳐 썼습니다. 고친 메시지를 읽은 어머니는 내게 전화를 걸어 “너 달라졌구나”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님은 어머니가 내 쪽지를 보고 예수님에 대해 물어보게 하시고 마침내 주님을 자신의 구주로 받아들이게 하셨습니다.

마태복음 5장에서 예수님은 그의 제자들이 세상의 빛이라고 단언하십니다 (14절). 주님은 “이같이 너희 빛이 사람 앞에 비치게 하여 그들로 너희 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하라”(16절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리스도를 우리의 구주로 받아들이는 순간 우리는 성령님의 능력을 받게 됩니다. 그리고 성령님은 우리를 변화시켜 우리가 가는 곳마다 하나님의 진리와 사랑을 밝게 드러내는 증인이 되게 하십니다.

성령님의 능력으로 우리는 매일 예수님을 점점 닮아가는 희망과 평화의 기쁜 빛이 될 수 있습니다. 우리가 행하는 모든 선한 일들은 곧 감사하며 드리는 예배의 행위가 되며, 이것은 다른 사람들의 마음을 끌게 되고, 살아 있는 믿음의 모습으로 인식될 수 있습니다. 성령님께 순종함으로 우리는 아들이신 예수님의 빛을 비추어 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있습니다.

REFLECTING THE LIGHT OF THE SON

After I had a conflict with my mother, she finally agreed to meet with me more than an hour away from my home. But upon arriving, I discovered she’d left before I got there. In my anger, I wrote her a note. But I revised it after I felt God nudging me to respond in love. After my mother read my revised message, she called me. “You’ve changed,” she said. God used my note to lead my mom to ask about Jesus and, eventually, receive Him as her personal Savior.

In Matthew 5, Jesus affirms that His disciples are the light of the world (V. 14). He said, “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (V. 16). As soon as we receive Christ as our Savior, we receive the power of the Holy Spirit. He transforms us so we can be radiant testimonies of God’s truth and love wherever we go.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can be joyful lights of hope and peace who look more and more like Jesus every day. Every good thing we do then becomes an act of grateful worship, which looks attractive to others and can be perceived as vibrant faith. Surrendered to the Holy Spirit, we can give honor to the Father by reflecting the Light of the Son—Jesus.

누구나 무언가를 숭배하고 있다

나는 최근에 그리스 아테네에 갔었습니다. 철학자들이 가르치고 아테네 사람들이 제사를 지냈던 중심가 고대 아고라의 주변을 걷다가 한때 아테나 여신의 동상이 서 있었던 아크로폴리스의 유적에서 아폴로와 제우스를 위한 제단을 발견하였습니다.

지금은 우리가 아폴로나 제우스를 숭배하지 않지만, 여전히 세상은 그때 못지않게 종교적입니다. 소설가 데이비드 포스터 월리스는 “누구나 무언가를 숭배하고 있다”고 하며 이렇게 경고했습니다. “만약 당신이 돈과 물질을 숭배한다면... 당신은 늘 부족할 것이다... 당신의 육체와 아름다움을 숭배한다면... 당신은 항상 못났다고 생각될 것이다... 당신의 지성을 숭배한다면... 결국은 당신의 어리석음을 알게 될 것이다.” 오늘날 세속적인 시대에도 여러 신들이 존재하며 그들은 결코 무시할 수 있는 수준이 아닙니다.

바울은 아고라를 방문했을 때 “아덴 사람들아 너희를 보니 범사에 종교심이 많도다”(사도행전 17:22)라고 했습니다. 바울 사도는 만물을 창조하신 유일하신 참 하나님(24-26절)은 알려지기를 원하시며(27절) 예수님의 부활을 통해 자신을 나타내신 분(31절)이라고 설명했습니다. 아폴로와 제우스와는 달리 하나님은 인간의 손으로 만들어진 존재가 아닙니다. 돈이나 외모, 지성을 숭배하는 것과는 달리, 하나님을 숭배하는 일은 우리를 파멸시키지 않을 것입니다.

우리가 삶의 목적과 안전을 얻기 위해 의지하는 것이 무엇이든 그것은 다 우리의 ‘신’입니다. 감사하게도 이 세상의 모든 신들이 우리를 실망시키는 그 순간에 우리는 유일하신 참 하나님을 발견할 수 있습니다(27절).

EVERYBODY WORSHIPS

I recently visited Athens, Greece. Walking around its Ancient Agora—the marketplace where philosophers taught and Athenians worshiped—I found altars to Apollo and Zeus, all in the shadow of the Acropolis, where a statue of the goddess Athena once stood.

We may not bow to Apollo or Zeus today, but society is no less religious. “Everybody worships,” novelist David Foster Wallace said, adding this warning: “If you worship money and things . . . then you will never have enough. . . . Worship your body and beauty. . . and you will always feel ugly. . . . Worship your intellect . . . [and] you will end up feeling stupid.” Our secular age has its own gods, and they’re not benign.

“People of Athens!” Paul said while visiting the Agora, “I see that in every way you are very religious” (ACTS 17:22). The apostle then described the one true God as the Creator of all (VV. 24–26) who wants to be known (V. 27) and who has revealed Himself through the resurrection of Jesus (V. 31). Unlike Apollo and Zeus, this God isn’t made by human hands. Unlike money, looks, or intelligence, worshiping Him won’t ruin us.

Our “god” is whatever we rely on to give us purpose and security. Thankfully, when every earthly god fails us, the one true God is ready to be found (V. 27).

로닛은 기독교가 아닌 종교의 가정에서 자랐습니다. 가족들 간에 영적인 주제에 대한 대화는 무미건조하고 학문적이었습니다. 그녀는 이렇게 고백합니다. “난 계속 기도를 열심히 했지만 [하나님의] 음성을 듣지 못했어요.”

로닛은 성경공부를 시작하면서 느리지만 차츰 예수님이 메시아라는 믿음에 조금씩 다가갔습니다. 그녀는 그 결정적인 순간을 이렇게 설명합니다. “내 마음속에 분명한 목소리가 들렸어요. ‘넌 충분히 들었고, 충분히 보았다. 이제는 그냥 믿어야 할 때다.’” 하지만 로닛에게는 문제가 생겼습니다. 바로 아버지였습니다. “아버지는 마치 베수비오 화산이 폭발한 것처럼 반대하셨어요.” 라고 그녀는 회상합니다.

로닛은 가족을 깊이 사랑하지만 이런 결론을 내렸습니다. “어떤 대가를 치르더라도 예수님을 믿는 일은 그만한 가치가 있다고 판단했어요.” 예수님이 인도하시는 대로 따르기 위해 당신은 무엇을 버려야 합니까?

WORTH IT TO FOLLOW JESUS

Ronit came from a religious but non-Christian family. Their discussions about spiritual matters were dry and academic. “I kept praying all the prayers,” she said, “but I wasn’t hearing [from God].”

She began to study the Bible. Slowly, steadily, she inched toward faith in Jesus as the Messiah. Ronit describes the defining moment: “I heard a clear voice in my heart saying, ‘You’ve heard enough. You’ve seen enough. It’s time to just believe.’ ” But Ronit faced a problem: her father. “My dad responded as if Mount Vesuvius erupted,” she recalls.

When Jesus walked this earth, crowds followed Him (LUKE 14:25). We don’t know exactly what they were looking for, but He was looking for disciples. And that comes with a cost. “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple,” Jesus said (V. 26). He told a story about building a tower. “Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost . . . ?” He asked (V. 28). Jesus’ point wasn’t that we’re to literally hate family; rather, it’s that we must choose Him over everything else. He said, “You whom do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples” (V. 33).

Ronit loves her family deeply, yet she concluded, “Whatever the cost, I figured it’s worth it.” What might you need to give up to follow Jesus as He guides you?

하나님의 날개 아래

우리 아파트 단지 근처 연못에는 캐나다 거위 가족 여럿이 아기 거위들과 함께 지내고 있습니다. 작은 거위 새끼들은 털이 보송보송하고 귀엽습니다. 산책을 하거나 연못 주위를 달릴 때 그들을 보지 않고 그냥 지나칠 수가 없습니다. 그러나 거위들과는 눈을 마주치지 않고 적당히 거리를 두어야 한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그렇지 않으면 새끼를 위협한다고 생각한 어미 거위가 새끼를 보호하려고 쉿쉿 소리를 내며 쫓아올 것을 각오해야 하니까요!

성경은 하나님의 자녀들을 향한 부드럽고 보호적인 그분의 사랑을 묘사하는 한 방법으로 새끼를 보호하는 새의 이미지를 사용하고 있습니다 (시편 91:4). 시편 61편에서 다윗은 이런 식으로 하나님의 돌보심을 경험해 보려고 애쓰고 있는 것처럼 보입니다. 하나님을 그의 “피난처, 견고한 망대” (3절)로 체험했던 다윗은 지금 “땅 끝에서” 절실히 부르짖으며 “나보다 높은 바위에 나를 인도하소서”(2절) 라고 간구합니다. 그는 “[하나님의] 날개 아래로 피하기”(4절)를 한 번 더 간절히 바랐습니다.

그리고 자신의 고통을 하나님께 치유 받으려는 갈망으로 나아온 다윗은 하나님께서 자신의 기도를 들으셨다는 것을 알고 위로를 받았습니다(5절). 다윗은 하나님의 신실하심 때문에 “주의 이름을 영원히 찬양”(8절)하겠다고 했습니다.

시편 기자처럼 하나님의 사랑에서 멀게 느껴질 때 우리는 그의 품으로 다시 달려가, 어미 새가 새끼를 온 힘으로 지키는 것처럼 우리를 보호하시고 돌보시는 하나님이 우리의 고통 중에도 우리와 함께 하신다는 것을 확신할 수 있습니다.

UNDER GOD’S WINGS

There are several Canada goose families with baby geese at the pond near our apartment complex. The little goslings are so fluffy and cute; it’s hard not to watch them when I go for a walk or run around the pond. But I’ve learned to avoid eye contact and give the geese a wide berth—otherwise, I risk a protective goose parent suspecting a threat and hissing and chasing me!

The image of a bird protecting her young is one that Scripture uses to describe God’s tender, protective love for His children (PSALM 91:4). In Psalm 61, David seems to be struggling to experience God’s care in this way. He’d experienced God as his “refuge, a strong tower” (V. 3), but now he called desperately “from the ends of the earth,” pleading, “lead me to the rock that is higher than I” (V. 2). He longed to once more “take refuge in the shelter of [God’s] wings” (V. 4).

And in bringing his pain and longing for healing to God, David took comfort in knowing that He’d heard him (V. 5). Because of God’s faithfulness, he knew he would “ever sing in praise of [His] name” (V. 8).

Like the psalmist, when we feel distant from God’s love, we can run back to His arms to be assured that even in our pain, He’s with us, protecting and caring for us as fiercely as a mother bird guards her young. - MONICA LA ROSE

음식 배달이 늦게 됐나요? 스마트폰으로 그 배달 기사에게 별 한 개의 점수를 줄 수 있습니다. 가게 주인이 불친절했나요? 그 가게에 대해 비판적인 리뷰를 올릴 수 있습니다. 우리는 스마트폰으로 쇼핑을 하고 친구와 연락을 하는 등, 여러 가지 일을 할 수 있는 반면, 공개적으로 서로를 평가할 수도 있게 되었습니다. 그리고 이것이 문제가 되기도 합니다.

이런 식으로 서로를 평가하는 것은 전후 사정을 알지 못하고 판단하도록 할 수 있기 때문에 문제의 소지가 있습니다. 배달 기사는 자신이 통제할 수 없는 상황으로 배달이 늦어져도 낮은 점수를 받게 됩니다. 가게 주인은 아픈 자녀를 돌보느라 한잠도 못 자고 나왔다가 부정적인 리뷰를 받을 수 있습니다. 이렇게 다른 사람을 부당하게 평가하지 않으려면 어떻게 해야 할까요?

그것은 하나님의 성품을 닮음으로써 가능합니다. 출애굽기 34:6-7 에서 하나님은 자신을 이렇게 묘사하십니다. “자비롭고 은혜로움” - 상황을 무시하고 우리 실수를 판단하지 않으시는 분. “노하기를 더디 하심” - 한번 안 좋은 경험으로 부정적인 리뷰를 올리지 않으시는 분. “인자가 많으심” - 앙갚음이 아니라 우리의 유익을 위해 벌을 주시는 분. “죄를 용서하심” - 한번 낮은 점수 받은 것을 가지고 우리 삶 전체를 평가하지 않으시는 분. 이렇게 하나님의 성품이 우리 성품의 바탕을 이루면(마태복음 6:33), 우리는 하나님이 사용하시듯 스마트폰을 사용하게 됨으로써 가혹한 말들을 피할 수 있습니다.

온라인 시대에 사는 우리는 누구나 다른 사람에 대해 가혹한 평을 할 수 있습니다. 하지만 성령께서 오늘 우리가 작은 사랑을 실천할 수 있도록 힘주시기를 간구합니다.

SMARTPHONE COMPASSION

Was the driver late with your food? You can use your phone to give him a one-star rating. Did the shopkeeper treat you curtly? You can write her a critical review. While smartphones enable us to shop, keep up with friends, and more, they have also given us the power to publicly rate each other. And this can be a problem.

Rating each other this way is problematic because judgments can be made without context. The driver gets rated poorly for a late delivery due to circumstances out of his control. The shopkeeper gets a negative review when she’d been up all night with a sick child. How can we avoid rating others unfairly like this?

By imitating God’s character. In Exodus 34:6–7, God describes Himself as “compassionate and gracious”—meaning He wouldn’t judge our failures without context; “slow to anger”—meaning He wouldn’t post a negative review after one bad experience; “abounding in love”—meaning His correctives are for our good, not to get revenge; and “forgiving [of] sin”—meaning our lives don’t have to be defined by our one-star days. Since God’s character is to be the basis of ours (MATTHEW 6:33), we can avoid the harshness smartphones enable by using ours as He would.

In the online age, we can all rate others harshly. May the Holy Spirit empower us to bring a little compassion today.- SHERIDAN VOYSEY

신뢰할 수 있는 하나님

반려 고양이 미키가 눈에 염증이 생겨 눈에 매일 안약을 넣어주었습니다. 욕실 카운터에 미키를 올려 놓으면 곧 앉아서 두려운 눈으로 나를 쳐다보며 안약을 받을 준비를 단단히 합니다. 나는 “착하지”하며 달래 줍니다. 미키는 내가 하는 일을 이해하지는 못해도 절대 뛰어내리거나, 화를 내거나, 나를 할퀴거나 하지 않았습니다. 오히려 자기를 힘들게 하는 나에게 더 가까이 다가와 기댔습니다. 미키는 나를 믿어도 된다는 것을 알고 있었습니다.

다윗이 시편 9편을 썼을 때 그는 이미 하나님의 사랑과 신실하심을 많이 경험했을 것입니다. 다윗이 적으로부터 자기를 지켜 달라고 하나님께로 향할 때 하나님은 그를 위해 행동하셨습니다(3-6절). 다윗이 힘들어할 때 하나님은 가만히계시지 않았습니다. 그 결과 다윗은 하나님이 어떤 분인지를 알게 되었습니다. 하나님은 강하고 의로우시며, 사랑이 많고 신실하신 분이었습니다. 그래서 다윗은 하나님을 신뢰했습니다. 그는 하나님은 신뢰할 수 있는 분이라는 것을 알았습니다.

나는 거리에서 굶주린 어린 미키를 발견한 그날 밤부터 여러 병치레를 돌보아주었습니다. 미키가 이해 못할 일들을 내가 해도 미키는 나를 신뢰할 수 있다는 것을 압니다. 이와 비슷하게, 우리에게 신실하신 하나님과 그분의 성품을 기억하면, 하나님이 무엇을 하고 계시는지 이해할 수 없어도 우리는 그분을 신뢰할 수 있습니다. 삶 가운데 힘든 시간을 보낼 때 하나님을 계속 신뢰할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

YOU CAN TRUST GOD

When my cat Mickey had an eye infection, I put eye drops in his eyes daily. As soon as I placed him on the bathroom counter, he’d sit, look at me with frightened eyes, and brace himself for the spurt of liquid. “Good boy,” I’d murmur. Even though he didn’t understand what I was doing, he never jumped off, hissed, or scratched me. Instead, he would press himself closer against me—the person putting him through the ordeal. He knew he could trust me.

When David wrote Psalm 9, he’d probably already experienced much of God’s love and faithfulness. He’d turned to Him for protection from his enemies, and God had acted on his behalf (VV. 3−6). During David’s times of need, God hadn’t failed him. As a result, David came to know what He was like—He was powerful and righteous, loving and faithful. And so, David trusted Him. He knew God was trustworthy.

I’ve cared for Mickey through several illnesses since the night I found him as a tiny, starving kitten on the street. He knows he can trust me—even when I do things to him that he doesn’t understand. In a similar way, remembering God’s faithfulness to us and His character helps us trust Him when we can’t understand what He’s doing. May we continue to trust God through the difficult times in life. - KAREN HUANG

금보다 더 귀한 것

동네에서 하는 야드 세일에서 싼 물건들을 고르다가 어떤 엄청난 가치의 물건을 찾아내는 것을 꿈 꿔 본 적이 있습니까? 그런 일이 코네티컷에서 실제로 있었습니다. 야드 세일에서 단 돈 35불에 구입한 꽃무늬 중국 골동품 그릇이 2021년 경매에서 70만불이 넘는 가격에 팔렸습니다. 이 그릇은 15세기에 만든 희귀 유물로 역사적으로 중요한 작품으로 밝혀졌습니다. 이것을 보면 사람들이 별로 가치 없게 생각한 것도 실제로는 커다란 가치가 있을 수 있다는 것을 새삼 깨닫게 됩니다.

베드로는 당시 여러 곳에 흩어져 살던 신자들에게 쓴 편지에서 그들이 믿는 예수님은 당시 세상 문화에서 배척당하신 분이라고 말했습니다. 대부분의 유대 종교지도자들에게서 멸시받고 로마 정부에 의해 십자가에 못박히신 그리스도는 많은 사람의 기대와 욕망을 충족시키지 못한다 하여 무가치하게 여겨졌습니다. 사람들이 이렇게 예수님의 가치를 인정하지 않았어도 “하나님께는 택하심을 입은 보배로운”(베드로전서 2:4) 분이셨습니다. 우리에게 있어 그분의 가치는 은이나 금보다 무한히 더 귀중합니다(1:18-19). 그리고 우리에게는 예수님을 믿기로 작정한 사람 그 누구든지 그들의 선택 때문에 결코 부끄러움을 당하지 않을 거라는 확신이 있습니다(2:6).

사람들이 예수님을 무가치하게 보고 거부할 때 다시 한번 살펴보시기 바랍니다. 그러면 성령님이 우리를 도우셔서 그리스도라는 헤아릴 수 없이 귀한 선물을 알아보게 하실 것입니다. 그리스도는 모든 사람이 하나님의 가족이 되도록 아주 귀한 초대를 하고 계십니다(10절).

MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD

Have you ever looked through low-priced items at a yard sale and dreamed that you might find something of incredible value? It happened in Connecticut when a floral Chinese antique bowl purchased for just $35 at a yard sale was sold at a 2021 auction for more than $700,000. The piece turned out to be a rare, historically significant artifact from the fifteenth century. It’s a stunning reminder that what some people consider of little worth can actually have great value.

Writing to believers scattered throughout the known world, Peter explained that their faith in Jesus was belief in the One who’d been rejected by the wider culture. Despised by most of the religious Jewish leaders and crucified by the Roman government, Christ was deemed worthless by many because He didn’t fulfill their expectations and desires. But though others had dismissed Jesus’ worth, He was “chosen by God and precious to him” (1 PETER 2:4). His value for us is infinitely more precious than silver or gold (1:18–19). And we have the assurance that whoever chooses to trust Jesus will never be ashamed of their choice (2:6).

When others reject Jesus as worthless, let’s take another look. God’s Spirit can help us see the priceless gift of Christ, who offers to all people the invaluable invitation to become part of the family of God (V. 10). - LISA M. SAMRA

세 왕

인기 뮤지컬 ‘해밀턴’에서 영국 왕 조지 3세는 만화에나 나올 법한 이상한 악당으로 재미있게 그려집니다. 그러나 그에 대한 새로운 전기에 의하면 그는 뮤지컬 ‘해밀턴’이나 미국 ‘독립선언문’에 묘사된 것 같은 폭군은 아니었다고 합니다. 조지 3세가 당시 미국인들이 말한 대로 그런 잔인한 전제 군주였다면 어떤 가혹한 방법을 써서라도 독립 운동을 저지시켰을 것입니다. 그러나 그는 “예의와 훌륭한 성품으로” 자제력이 있었다고 합니다.

그런 조지 3세가 죽을 때에 후회를 했을까요? 신하들을 더 세게 밀어 붙였다면 통치가 더 잘 됐을까요?

아마도 그렇지는 않았을 것입니다. 성경을 보면 여호람은 왕위를 굳게 지키려고 “그의 모든 아우들과 이스라엘 방백들 중 몇 사람을 칼로 죽였다”(역대하 21:4)고 기록되어 있습니다. 여호람은 “여호와 보시기에 악을 행했습니다”(6절). 그의 무자비한 통치에 백성들은 등을 돌렸고, 그가 처참히 죽었을 때에도 백성들은 애도하지 않고 “분향하지 않았습니다”(19절).

조지 3세가 너무 유약했는지는 역사가들이 다룰 부분이지만, 여호람은 분명 너무 가혹했습니다. 하지만 “은혜와 진리가 충만한”(요한복음 1:14) 왕이신 예수님의 방법은 이들보다 훨씬 더 낫습니다. 진리를 요구하시는 그리스도의 기준은 엄격하지만, 그럼에도 은혜를 베풀어 실패한 자들을 품으십니다. 예수님은 우리 믿는 자들에게 주님을 따를 것을 요구하십니다. 그러고는 성령님의 인도하심을 통해 우리에게 그렇게 할 수 있는 힘을 주십니다.

THREE KINGS

In the hit musical Hamilton, England’s King George III is humorously portrayed as a cartoonish, deranged villain. However, a new biography on King George said he was not the tyrant described in Hamilton or America’s Declaration of Independence. If George had been the brutal despot that Americans said he was, he would have stopped their drive for independence with extreme, scorched-earth measures. But he was restrained by his “civilized, good-natured” temperament.

Who knows if King George died with regret? Would his reign have been more successful if he’d been harsher with his subjects? Not necessarily. In the Bible we read of King Jehoram, who solidified his throne by putting “all his brothers to the sword along with some of the officials of Israel” (2 CHRONICLES 21:4). Jehoram “did evil in the eyes of the Lord” (V. 6). His ruthless reign alienated his people, who neither wept for his gruesome death nor made a “funeral fire in his honor” (V. 19).

Historians may debate whether George was too soft; Jehoram was surely too harsh. A better way is that of King Jesus, who is “full of grace and truth” (JOHN 1:14). Christ’s expectations are firm (He demands truth), yet He embraces those who fail (He extends grace). Jesus calls us who believe in Him to follow His lead. Then, through the leading of His Holy Spirit, He empowers us to do so. - MIKE WITTMER
