필요한 한 가지

3월의 어느 주말, 나는 예수님이 그들의 형제 나사로와 함께 사랑하신 베다니에 사는 자매 마리아와 마르다(요한복음 11:5)를 주제로 수련회를 인도했습니다. 우리는 영국 해안선을 따라 외진 곳에 있었습니다. 그런데 예상치 못한 눈이 내려 갇혀 버리자, 많은 참석자들은 함께 하루 더 머무르면서 마리아처럼 예수님의 발 앞에 앉는 연습을 더 할 수 있어 좋다고 말했습니다. 그들은 예수님이 마르다에게 받아들일 것을 부드럽게 말씀하신 ”필요한 한 가지”(누가복음 10:42), 곧 주님께 가까이 다가가 주님에게서 배우라고 하신 것을 자신들도 추구하고 싶어 했습니다.

예수님이 마르다와 마리아, 나사로의 집에 방문했 때, 마르다는 주님께서 오신다는 것을 미리 알지 못했을 것입니다. 그래서 예수님과 그의 친구들을 대접할 음식 준비를 돕지 않는 마리아에게 얼마나 화가 났는지 충분히 이해할 수 있습니다. 그러나 마르다는 정말 중요한 것, 곧 예수님에게 배움으로 그분에게서 얻을 수 있는 것을 놓쳤습니다. 예수님은 마르다가 주님을 섬기고 싶어 하는 마음을 꾸짖은 것이 아니라, 그녀가 가장 중요한 것을 놓치고 있다는 것을 알려 주신 것입니다.

여러 가지 일로 방해를 받아 화가 나거나 이루고자 하는 일이 많아 중압감을 느낄 때, 우리는 잠시 멈춰 서서 인생에서 정말 중요한 것이 무엇인지 되돌아볼 수 있습니다. 그리고 일의 속도를 줄이고 예수님 발 앞에 앉아 있는 자신의 모습을 그려 보면서 예수님께 주님의 사랑과 생명으로 우리를 채워 달라고 간구할 수 있습니다. 그렇게 우리는 주님의 사랑받는 제자 됨을 마음껏 누릴 수 있습니다.

ONE THING NEEDED

One weekend in March, I led a retreat on the theme of Mary and Martha, the sisters in Bethany whom Jesus loved along with their brother Lazarus (JOHN 11:5). We were in a remote spot along the English coastline. When we were snowed in unexpectedly, many of the participants remarked how the extra day together meant they could practice sitting at Christ’s feet as Mary did. They wanted to pursue the “one thing . . . needed” (LUKE 10:42 NKJV) that Jesus lovingly told Martha she should embrace, which was choosing to draw close and learn from Him.

When Jesus visited the home of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, Martha wouldn’t have known He was coming in advance, so we can understand how she could have been upset with Mary for not helping with the preparations to feed Him and His friends. But she lost sight of what really mattered—receiving from Jesus as she learned from Him. Christ wasn’t scolding her for wanting to serve Him but rather reminding her that she was missing the most important thing.

When interruptions make us irritable or we feel overwhelmed about the many things we want to accomplish, we can stop and remind ourselves what really matters in life. As we slow ourselves down, picturing ourselves sitting at the feet of Jesus, we can ask Him to fill us with His love and life. We can revel in being His beloved disciple.

더 이상 기억하지 않는 죄

나는 얼음을 보지 못했지만 느낌이 왔습니다. 내가 운전하고 있던 할아버지의 픽업 트럭 뒷부분이 좌우로 흔들렸습니다. 한 번, 두 번, 세 번 크게 흔들리더니 나는 공중에 붕 떠서 15피트(약 4.5미터) 둑 밖으로 날아갔습니다. 그때 ‘내가 죽지 않는다면 짜릿한 경험이 될 거야.’라고 생각했던 기억이 납니다. 바로 이어 트럭은 급경사 면을 들이받으며 아래로 굴러 내려갔습니다. 나는 다친 데 없이 찌그러진 차에서 기어 나왔습니다.

그 트럭은 1992년 12월 아침에 완전히 박살났습니다. 그리고 하나님이 나를 살리셨습니다. 하지만 내 할아버지는 어땠을까요? ‘뭐라고 하셨을까요?’ 사실, 할아버지는 트럭에 대해 한 마디도 하지 않으셨습니다. 단 한마디도. 혼내는 것도, 어떻게 보상할지에 대한 것도, 그 어떤 것도 없었습니다. 그저 용서와 내가 다치지 않은 것에 대한 할아버지의 미소뿐이었습니다.

할아버지의 은혜는 예레미야 31장에 나오는 하나님의 은혜를 생각나게 합니다. 그들의 엄청난 결함에도 불구하고 하나님은 “내가 그들의 악행을 사하고 다시는 그 죄를 기억하지 아니하리라”(34절)고 하시면서 그의 백성들과의 관계 회복을 약속하십니다.

할아버지는 내가 그의 트럭을 망가뜨렸다는 것을 결코 ‘잊지’ 않았다고 나는 확신합니다. 그러나 할아버지는 마치 여기 하나님이 그러신 것처럼 그것을 ‘기억’하지도, 나를 부끄럽게 하지도, 내가 마땅히 진 빚을 갚도록 일을 시키지도 않으셨습니다. 하나님이 그러시겠다고 말씀하신 것과 같이 할아버지는 내가 망가뜨렸던 그 일이 아예 없었던 것처럼 더 이상 기억하지 않기로 하셨습니다.

SINS REMEMBERED NO MORE

I never saw the ice. But I felt it. The back end of the pickup I was driving—my grandfather’s—fishtailed. One swerve, two, three— and I was airborne, flying off a fifteen-foot embankment. I remember thinking, This would be awesome if I wasn’t going to die. A moment later, the truck crunched into the steep slope and rolled to the bottom. I crawled out of the crushed cab, unscathed.

The truck was utterly totaled that December morning in 1992. God had spared me. But what about my grandfather? What would he say? In fact, he never said a single word about the truck. Not
one. There was no scolding, no repayment plan, nothing. Just forgiveness. And a grandfather’s smile that I was okay.

My grandfather’s grace reminds me of God’s grace in Jeremiah 31. There, despite their tremendous failings, God promises a restored relationship with His people, saying, “I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more” (V. 34).

I’m sure my grandfather never forgot that I’d wrecked his truck. But he acted just like God does here, not remembering it, not shaming me, not making me work to repay the debt I rightfully owed. Just as God says He’ll do, my grandfather chose to remember it no more, as if the destructive thing I’d done had never happened.

명함과 기도

최근에 남편을 여읜 그 여인은 점점 걱정이 더해 갔습니다. 보험 약관에 따라 보험금을 받기 위해서는 남편의 사망 사고에 대한 주요 정보가 필요했습니다. 도와주겠다는 경찰관과 대화를 나누었지만, 그만 그 경찰관의 명함을 잃어버리고 말았습니다. 그래서 하나님께 도움을 구하며 기도했습니다. 잠시 후, 교회에서 창가를 지나다가 창틀에 경찰관의 명함이 꽂혀 있는 것을 보았습니다. 그녀는 그것이 어떻게 그곳에 있는지 알 수는 없었지만 ‘왜’ 거기에 있는지는 알 수 있었습니다.

그녀는 기도를 언제나 진지하게 했습니다. 왜 그러지 않겠습니까? 성경은 하나님이 우리의 간구에 언제나 귀를 기울이신다고 말합니다. 베드로는 이렇게 썼습니다. “주의 눈은 의인을 향하시고 그의 귀는 의인의 간구에 기울이신다” (베드로전서 3:12).

성경은 하나님이 기도에 어떻게 응답하셨는지 많은 예를 보여줍니다. 그 한 예가 병들었던 유다 왕 히스기야의 기도입니다. 그는 이사야 선지자로부터 자신이 곧 죽을 것이라는 말을 들었습니다. 왕은 무엇을 해야 할지 알았습니다. 그는 “여호와께 기도했습니다”(열왕기하 20:2). 하나님은 즉시 이사야를 통해 왕에게 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 네 기도를 들었다”(5절). 히스기야는 15년을 더 살았습니다.

하나님은 항상 창틀에 꽂혀 있는 명함처럼 기도에 응답하시지는 않습니다. 하지만 어려운 상황이 생길 때 그것을 우리 혼자 견디지는 않을 거라고 우리를 안심시켜 주십니다. 하나님은 우리의 기도에 주의를 기울이시면서 우리를 보고 계시고 우리와 함께하십니다.

A CARD AND PRAYER

The recently widowed woman was growing concerned. To collect some vital funds from an insurance policy, she needed key information about the accident that had taken her husband’s life. She had talked to a police officer who said he’d help her, but then she lost his business card. So she prayed, pleading with God for help. A short time later, she was at her church when she walked by a window and saw a card—the policeman’s card—on a windowsill. She had no idea how it got there, but she knew why.

She took prayer seriously. And why not? Scripture says that God is listening for our requests. “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,” Peter wrote, “and his ears are attentive to their prayer” (1 PETER 3:12).

The Bible gives us examples of how God responded to prayer. One is Hezekiah, the king of Judah, who became ill. He’d even received word from Isaiah, a prophet, saying he was going to die. The king knew what to do: he “prayed to the Lord” (2 KINGS 20:2). Immediately, God told Isaiah to give the king this message from Him: “I have heard your prayer” (V. 5). Hezekiah was granted fifteen more years of life.

God doesn’t always answer prayers with things like a card on a windowsill, but He assures us that when difficult situations arise, we don’t face them alone. God sees us, and He’s with us—attentive to our prayers.

사무실 건물의 계단에서 갑자기 현기증이 났습니다. 계단이 빙글빙글 도는 것 같아 몹시 당황하며 난간을 붙잡았습니다. 심장이 두근거리고 다리가 후들거려 나는 난간이 견고한 것에 고마워하며 난간에 꼭 매달렸습니다. 의료 검사를 해보니 나에게 빈혈이 있었습니다. 그 원인이 심각하지 않고 또 상태도 호전되었지만, 나는 그날 경험한 내 몸의 허약함을 결코 잊지 못할 것입니다.

그래서 나는 예수님 몸에 손을 댄 여인을 보며 감탄합니다. 그녀는 쇠약한 상태로 군중을 헤치고 나아갔을 뿐 아니라 주님께 담대히 다가가는 믿음을 보여주었습니다(마태복음 9:20-22). 그 여인은 당연히 두려웠을 것입니다. 유대 율법에 따라 그녀는 부정한 사람이었고, 부정한 그가 다른 사람들을 가까이 만나는 것은 심각한 결과를 초래할 수 있었습니다(레위기 15:25-27). 하지만 그 여인은 ‘주님의 겉옷을 만질 수만 있다면’ 하는 생각으로 앞으로 계속 나아갔습니다. 마태복음 9장 21절에 “만지다”로 번역된 헬라어 단어는 단순히 만지는 정도가 아니라 “붙들다” 또는 “몸을 갖다 대다”라는 더 강한 의미를 지니고 있습니다. 그 여인은 예수님을 꽉 붙잡았습니다. 주님이 자신을 치유할 수 있다고 믿었기 때문입니다.

예수님은 군중 속에서 한 여인의 간절한 믿음을 보셨습니다. 우리도 믿음으로 담대히 나아가 절실하게 예수님께 매달릴 때, 주님은 우리를 기쁘게 맞이하시며 도와주십니다. 우리는 거절이나 처벌에 대한 두려움 없이 주님께 우리의 이야기를 털어놓을 수 있습니다. 예수님은 지금 우리에게 “나에게 매달리라”고 말씀하십니다.

CLING TO JESUS

Dizziness struck me in the stairwell of the office building. Overwhelmed, I gripped the banister because the stairs seemed to spin. As my heart pounded and my legs buckled, I clung onto the banister, thankful for its strength. Medical tests showed I had anemia. Although its cause wasn’t serious and my condition was resolved, I’ll never forget how weak I felt that day.

That’s why I admire the woman who touched Jesus. She not only moved through the crowd in her weakened state, but she also showed faith in venturing out to approach Him (MATTHEW 9:20–22). She had good reason to be afraid: Jewish law defined her as unclean and by exposing others to her uncleanness, she could face serious consequences (LEVITICUS 15:25−27). But the thought If I only touch His cloak kept her going. The Greek word that is translated as “touch” in Matthew 9:21 is not mere touching but has the stronger meaning of “to hold on to” or “to attach oneself.” The woman tightly held on to Jesus. She believed He could heal her.

Jesus saw, in the midst of a crowd, the desperate faith of one woman. When we too venture out in faith and cling to Christ in our need, He welcomes us and comes to our aid. We can tell Him our story without fear of rejection or punishment. Jesus tells us today, “Cling to Me.”

행운의 부츠

톰이 전투화 밑에서 오싹한 “딸깍” 소리를 느꼈을 때는 너무 늦엇습니다. 본능적으로 그는 흥분제를 먹은 것처럼 몸을 솟구쳐 피했습니다. 다행히 땅에 숨겨진 치명적인 장치는 폭발하지 않았습니다. 나중에 폭발물 처리반이 그 자리에서 80파운드(약 36킬로그램)의 고성능 폭발물을 제거했습니다. 톰은 그 군화를 해어질 때까지 신었습니다. 그는 그 군화를 “나의 행운의 부츠”라고 부릅니다.

톰은 단순히 그의 아슬아슬 했던 순간을 기념하려고 그 부츠를 끝까지 지녔을 것입니다. 그러나 사람들은 종종 어떤 물건들을 두고 “행운을 가져다 준다”고 여기거나, 심지어는 “축복받는다”는 보다 영적인 꼬리표를 붙이고 싶어 합니다. 우리가 어떤 물건이나 심지어 어떤 징표까지도 하나님의 축복의 근원으로 여기는 것은 위험합니다.

그러나 이스라엘 백성들의 생각은 잘못된 것이었습니다. 그 언약궤 자체는 그들에게 아무것도 가져다줄 수 없었습니다. 유일하신 참 하나님의 임재 대신 물건을 믿었기에 이스라엘 백성들은 더 큰 패배를 당했고 언약궤마저 적군에게 빼앗겼습니다(10-11절).

기도하도록 상기시켜 주거나, 하나님의 선하심에 감사하도록 상기시켜 주는 기념물은 괜찮습니다. 하지만 그것들은 결코 축복의 근원이 아닙니다. 축복의 근원은 오직 하나님 한 분 뿐이십니다.

LUCKY BOOTS

Too late, Tom felt the chilling “click” beneath his combat boots. Instinctively, he bounded away in an adrenaline-fueled leap. The deadly device hidden underground didn’t detonate. Later, the explosive ordnance disposal team unearthed eighty pounds of high explosives from the spot. Tom wore those boots until they fell apart. “My lucky boots,” he calls them.

Tom may have clung to those boots simply to commemorate his close call. But people are often tempted to consider objects “lucky” or to even give them the more spiritual label “blessed.” Danger arrives when we credit an object—even a symbol—as a source of God’s blessing.

The Israelites learned this the hard way. The Philistine army had just routed them in battle. As Israel reviewed the debacle, someone thought of taking the “ark of the Lord’s covenant” into a rematch (1 SAMUEL 4:3). That seemed like a good idea (VV. 6–9). After all, the ark of the covenant was a holy object.

But the Israelites had the wrong perspective. By itself, the ark couldn’t bring them anything. Putting their faith in an object instead of in the presence of the one true God, the Israelites suffered an even worse defeat, and the enemy captured the ark (VV. 10–11).

Mementos that remind us to pray or to thank God for His goodness are fine. But they’re never the source of blessing. That is God—and God alone.

기도를 통한 사랑

여러 해 동안 존은 교회에서 다소 말썽 많은 사람이었습니다. 그는 성질이 고약하고 요구가 많고 종종 무례했습니다. 그는 “대접을” 잘 받지 못한다고, 봉사자들과 직원들이 일을 제대로 하지 않는다고 끊임없이 불평했습니다. 솔직히 그는 사랑하기 어려운 사람이었습니다.

그래서 그가 암 진단을 받았다는 소식을 들었을 때 그를 위해 기도하기가 쉽지 않았습니다. 그의 모진 말에 대한 기억과 그의 불쾌한 성격이 내 마음속을 가득 채우고 있었기 때문입니다. 하지만 사랑하라는 예수님의 명령을 기억하며 나는 존을 위해 매일 간단히 기도를 드렸습니다. 며칠 지나면서 나는 호감이 가지 않는 그의 성격에 대해 생각하는 횟수가 줄어들기 시작했다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 나는 생각했습니다. ‘그가 정말 아파하고 있을 거야. 아마 지금 정말 어쩔 줄 몰라 하고 있을지도 몰라.’

나는 기도가 우리 자신과 우리의 감정, 그리고 다른 사람과의 관계를 하나님께 활짝 열어 하나님이 그 모든 것에 들어오시게 함으로써 하나님의 관점으로 볼 수 있게 한다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 기도하며 우리의 의지와 감정을 내려놓을 때 성령님은 우리의 마음을 천천히 그러나 확실히 변화시키십니다. 원수를 사랑하라는 예수님의 명령이 “너희를 모욕하는 자를 위하여 기도하라”(누가복음 6:28)고 하는 기도의 명령과 견고하게 연결되어 있는 것이 전혀 놀랍지 않습니다.

솔직히 말해 아직도 존을 좋게 생각하기는 어렵습니다. 하지만 성령님의 도우심으로 하나님의 눈과 마음으로 그를 보며, 그 또한 용서받고 사랑받아야 하는 사람임을 계속 배우고 있습니다.

LOVE THROUGH PRAYER

For years, John had been somewhat of an irritant at church. He was bad-tempered, demanding, and often rude. He complained constantly about not being “served” well, and about volunteers and staff not doing their job. He was, honestly, hard to love.

So when I heard that he’d been diagnosed with cancer, I found it difficult to pray for him. Memories of his harsh words and unpleasant character filled my mind. But remembering Jesus’ call to love, I was drawn to say a simple prayer for John each day. A few days later, I found myself beginning to think a bit less often about his unlikeable qualities. He must be really hurting, I thought. Perhaps he’s feeling really lost now.

Prayer, I realize, opens ourselves, our feelings, and our relationships with others to God, allowing Him to enter and bring His perspective into it all. The act of submitting our will and feelings to Him in prayer allows the Holy Spirit to change our hearts, slowly but surely. No wonder Jesus’ call to love our enemies is bound up tightly with a call to prayer: “Pray for those who mistreat you” (LUKE 6:28).

I have to admit, I still struggle to think well of John. But with the Spirit’s help, I’m learning to see him through God’s eyes and heart—as a person to be forgiven and loved.

예수님의 최후의 승리

제2차 세계대전 중 유럽에 있는 일부 미군 부대에 고향을 그리워하는 군인들을 위해 특별한 보급품인 피아노가 공중 낙하되었습니다. 그 피아노는 특별히 제작되어 보통보다 10퍼센트의 금속만 써서 만들었고, 특별한 방수 접착제와 방충 처리를 한 것이었습니다. 피아노는 투박하고 단순했지만, 모여서 익숙한 고향 노래를 부르는 군인들에게 활력을 북돋아 주는 시간을 제공해 주었습니다.

노래, 특히 찬양은 예수님을 믿는 사람들이 전투 중에도 평안을 얻을 수 있는 한 방법입니다. 여호사밧 왕은 엄청난 규모의 침략군과 맞섰을 때 그것이 사실이라는 것을 알았습니다(역대하 20장). 겁에 질린 왕은 모든 사람을 불러 모아 기도와 금식을 하게 했습니다(3-4절). 그러자 하나님은 그에게 군사들을 데리고 적군에 맞서라고 하시면서, “이 전쟁에는 너희가 싸울 것이 없다”(17 절)고 약속하셨습니다. 여호사밧은 하나님을 믿고 믿음으로 행했습니다. 그는 노래하는 자들을 택하여 군사들보다 앞서게 하고, 그들이 보게 될 승리를 믿고 하나님을 찬양하게 했습니다(21절). 그리고 그들의 노래가 시작되자 하나님은 기적 같이 적군을 물리치시고 자기 백성들을 구원해 주셨습니다(22절).

언제나 우리가 원하는 때와 방식으로 승리를 얻을 수는 없습니다. 그러나 우리는 죄와 사망을 이기신 예수님의 최후의 승리를 언제나 선포할 수 있습니다. 그 승리는 우리를 위해 이미 이긴 승리입니다. 그래서 우리는 전쟁터 한가운데서도 예배하는 마음으로 안식할 수 있습니다.

JESUS’ ULTIMATE VICTORY

At some military camps across Europe during World War II, an unusual type of supply was air-dropped for homesick soldiers— upright pianos. They were specially manufactured to contain only ten percent of the normal amount of metal, and they received special water-resistant glue and anti-insect treatments. The pianos were rugged and simple but provided hours of spirit-lifting entertainment for soldiers who gathered around to sing familiar songs of home.

Singing—especially songs of praise—is one way that believers in Jesus can find peace in the battle too. King Jehoshaphat found this to be true when he faced vast invading armies (2 CHRONICLES 20). Terrified, the king called all the people together for prayer and fasting (VV. 3–4). In response, God told him to lead out soldiers to meet the enemy, promising that they’d “not have to fight this battle” (V. 17). Jehoshaphat believed God and acted in faith. He appointed singers to go ahead of the soldiers and sing praise to God for the victory they believed they would see (V. 21). And as their music began, He miraculously defeated their enemies and saved His people (V. 22).

Victory doesn’t always come when and how we want it to. But we can always proclaim Jesus’ ultimate victory over sin and death that’s already been won for us. We can choose to rest in a spirit of worship even in the middle of a war zone.

목자의 음성을 아는 것

어릴 적 테네시의 한 농장에서 살았던 나는 화창한 오후가 되면 친한 친구와 함께 돌아다니면서 놀았습니다. 우리는 숲에서 등산을 하고, 조랑말을 타고, 로데오 경기장을 방문하고, 카우보이들이 말을 다루는 것을 보려고 겁 없이 마구간 안으로 들어가곤 했습니다. 하지만 바람과 모든 소음을 뚫고 선명하게 들려오는 아버지의 휘파람 소리를 들으면 나는 하던 모든 것을 멈추고 곧장 집으로 향했습니다. 그 신호는 틀림없었고, 아버지가 나를 부른다는 사실을 알았기 때문입니다. 수십 년이 지난 지금도 나는 여전히 그 휘파람 소리를 기억할 수 있습니다.

예수님은 제자들에게 그가 목자이며 그를 따르는 자들은 양이라고 하셨습니다. 주님은 “양은 [목자]의 음성을 듣나니 그가 자기 양의 이름을 각각 불러 인도하여 내느니라”(요한복음 10:3)고 말씀하셨습니다. 수많은 지도자들과 선생들이 자신들의 권위를 내세워 예수님의 제자들을 혼란에 빠뜨리려 할 때도, 주님은 다른 어떤 소리보다 그의 사랑의 목소리를 더 분명히 들을 수 있을 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. “양들은 [목자]의 음성을 알고 뒤따라갑니다” (4절, 현대인의 성경).

우리가 조심하여 예수님의 음성을 주의 깊게 듣고, 어리석게 그것을 놓치는 일이 없기를 바랍니다. 왜냐하면 목자이신 주님이 분명하게 말씀하시면 그의 양들은 그의 음성을 듣는다는 것이 여전히 기본적인 진리이기 때문입니다. 때로는 성경의 한 구절이나 믿는 친구의 말, 혹은 성령님께서 살짝 깨닫게 해주시는 것을 통해 우리는 예수님이 말씀하시는 것을 들을 수 있습니다.

KNOWING THE SHEPHERD’S VOICE

When I was a boy living on a ranch in Tennessee, I spent glorious afternoons roaming with my best friend. We’d hike into the woods, ride ponies, visit the rodeo arena, and venture into the barn to watch the cowboys work the horses. But whenever I heard my dad’s whistle—that clear sound slicing through the wind and all the other clatter—I’d immediately drop whatever I was doing and head home. The signal was unmistakable, and I knew I was being called by my father. Decades later, I’d still recognize that whistle.

Jesus told His disciples that He was the Shepherd, and His followers were the sheep. “The sheep listen to [the shepherd’s] voice,” He said. “He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out” (JOHN 10:3). In a time when numerous leaders and teachers sought to confuse Christ’s disciples by asserting their authority, He declared that His loving voice could still be heard clearly, more distinct than all the others. “His sheep follow [the shepherd], because they know his voice” (V. 4).

May we be careful as we listen for Jesus’ voice and avoid foolishly dismissing it, for the fundamental truth remains: The Shepherd speaks clearly, and His sheep hear His voice. Perhaps through a verse of Scripture, the words of a believing friend, or the nudge of the Spirit—Jesus speaks, and we do hear.

멸망 당한 파괴자

“내일이면 새끼들이 날 수 있을 것 같아요!” 아내 캐리는 집 앞 현관에 걸려 있는 바구니 둥지에서 굴뚝새 가족의 성장을 지켜보며 기뻐했습니다. 아내는 매일 그 새들을 지켜보며 어미새가 둥지로 먹이를 물어올 때 사진을 찍었습니다.

아내는 다음날 그 어린 새끼들을 보려고 아침 일찍 일어났습니다. 둥지를 덮은 풀들을 치우며 새끼들을 보려고 했지만, 오히려 가는 눈의 뱀과 마주쳤습니다. 뱀이 수직 벽을 기어올라 둥지 안으로 미끄러져 들어가서 새끼들을 모두 삼켜버린 것입니다.

캐리는 마음이 아프고 화가 났습니다. 내가 출장 중이어서 아내는 친구를 불러 뱀을 없애 버렸습니다. 그러나 이미 피해를 본 후였습니다.

성경은 그의 길을 가며 파괴를 일삼는 또 다른 뱀에 대해 이야기합니다. 에덴동산의 뱀은 하나님이 먹지 말라고 경고한 나무에 대해 하와를 속였습니다. “너희가 결코 죽지 아니하리라 너희가 그것을 먹는 날에는 너희 눈이 밝아져 하나님과 같이 되어 선악을 알 줄 하나님이 아심이니라”(창세기 3:4-5).

하와와 아담의 불순종의 결과로 죄와 죽음이 이 세상에 들어왔으며, “옛 뱀이요 마귀”가 꾸민 속임수는 지금도 계속되고 있습니다(요한계시록 20:2). 그러나 예수님은 “마귀의 일을 멸하려” 오셨고(요한1서 3:8), 주님을 통해 우리와 하나님과의 관계가 회복되었습니다. 그리고 언젠가 주님께서 “만물을 새롭게” 하실 것입니다(요한계시록 21:5).

DESTRUCTION DESTROYED

“The baby birds will fly tomorrow!” My wife, Cari, was elated about the progress a family of wrens was making in a hanging basket on our front porch. She’d watched them daily, taking pictures as the mother brought food to the nest.

Cari got up early the next morning to look in on them. She moved some of the greenery aside covering the nest but instead of seeing baby birds, the narrow eyes of a serpent met hers. The snake had scaled a vertical wall, slithered into the nest, and devoured them all.

Cari was heartbroken and angry. I was out of town, so she called a friend to remove the snake. But the damage was done.

Scripture tells of another serpent who left destruction in his path. The serpent in the garden of Eden deceived Eve about the tree God had warned her against eating from: “You will not certainly die,” he lied, “for God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (GENESIS 3:4–5).

Sin and death entered the world as a result of Eve and Adam’s disobedience to God, and the deception wrought by “that ancient serpent, who is the devil” continues (REVELATION 20:2). But Jesus came “to destroy the devil’s work” (1 JOHN 3:8), and through Him we’re restored to relationship with God. One day, He’ll make “everything new” (REVELATION 21:5).

꾸준히 제공된 피자

열두 살 때 서아프리카에서 이탈리아로 건너온 이브라힘은 이탈리아어를 한마디도 알지 못하고 말까지 더듬어 이민자로서 천대를 당해야 했습니다. 그러나 그 어느 것도 부지런한 이브라힘을 가로막지 못했고, 그는 20대의 나이에 트렌토에 피자 가게를 열었습니다. 의심의 눈으로 바라보던 사람들에게 보란 듯이 그의 작은 사업은 세계 피자 업계 50위 안에 들만큼 성장했습니다.

그때 그에게 이탈리아 거리의 굶주리는 아이들에게 음식을 나눠주고 싶은 소망이 생겼습니다. 그래서 그는 손님들이 도움이 필요한 사람을 위해 여분의 커피(카페 소스페소)를 더 사는 나폴리의 전통을 피자(피자 소스페사)로 확장하여 ‘자선 피자’ 운동을 전개했습니다. 뿐만 아니라 이민 온 아이들에게는 과거의 선입견을 버리고 무슨 일에나 포기하지 말 것을 강조했습니다.

이러한 꾸준함은 바울이 갈라디아 교인들에게 지속적으로 모든 이에게 선을 행하라고 가르친 것을 생각나게 해줍니다. “우리가 선을 행하되 낙심하지 말지니 포기하지 아니하면 때가 이르매 거두리라”(갈라디아서 6:9). 바울은 계속해서 말합니다. “그러므로 우리는 기회 있는 대로 모든 이에게 착한 일을 하되 더욱 믿음의 가정들에게 할지니라”(10절).

편견과 언어 장벽에 부딪혀야 했던 이민자 이브라힘은 선을 행할 기회를 창출했습니다. 그 일에 음식은 관용과 이해로 이어지는 “다리”가 되어주었습니다. 그런 그의 꾸준함에 자극 받아 우리도 선한 일을 행할 기회를 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 우리가 그렇게 할 때 하나님은 우리의 꾸준한 노력을 통해 일하시며 영광을 받으십니다.

PERSISTENT PIZZA

At age twelve, Ibrahim arrived in Italy from West Africa, not knowing a word of Italian, struggling with a stutter, and forced to face anti-immigrant putdowns. None of that stopped the hardworking young man who, in his twenties, opened a pizza shop in Trento, Italy. His little business won over doubters to be listed as one of the top fifty pizzerias in the world.

His hope was then to help feed hungry children on Italian streets. So he launched a “pizza charity” by expanding a Neapolitan tradition—where customers buy an extra coffee (caffè sospeso) for those in need—to pizza (pizza sospesa). He also urges immigrant children to look past prejudice and not give up.

Such persistence recalls Paul’s lessons to the Galatians on continually doing good to all. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (GALATIANS 6:9). Paul continued, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers” (V. 10).

Ibrahim, an immigrant who faced prejudice and language barriers, created an opportunity to do good. Food became “a bridge” leading to tolerance and understanding. Inspired by such persistence, we too can look for opportunities to do good. God, then, gets the glory as He works through our steady trying.
