믿음으로 바라보기

아침에 산책하는 동안, 태양이 미시간 호수의 물을 완벽한 각도로 비추어 굉장히 아름다운 광경을 연출했습니다. 나는 사진을 찍기 위해 카메라의 위치를 정하면서 친구에게 멈춰서 나를 기다려 달라고 했습니다. 태양의 위치 때문에 사진을 찍기 전에 휴대폰 화면의 이미지를 볼 수는 없었지만, 전에 이렇게 해본 적이 있어서 멋진 사진이 나올 거라는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 친구에게 “우리가 지금은 볼 수는 없지만 이런 사진은 항상 잘 나와.”라고 말했습니다.

믿음으로 걸어가는 삶은 종종 바로 그 사진을 찍는 것과 같습니다. 화면을 자세히 볼 수 없다고 해서 거기에 굉장한 사진이 안 찍힌 것이 아닙니다. 우리는 하나님이 일하시는 것을 항상 볼 수는 없어도, 하나님이 거기 계시다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다. 히브리서 저자가 기록했듯이 “믿음은 바라는 것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거입니다”(11:1). 믿음으로 우리는 하나님을 신뢰하고 확신합니다. 특히 하나님이 하시는 일을 못 보거나 이해할 수 없을 때 더욱 그렇습니다.

믿음이 있으면, 안 보인다고 해서 “사진을 찍지” 못하는 것이 아닙니다. 보이지 않으면 오히려 우리가 더 기도하며 하나님의 인도를 구하게 될 수도 있습니다. 우리는 또한 우리 자신의 이야기 뿐 아니라 믿음으로 살았던 사람들의 과거의 발자취를 앎으로써 그럴 수 있습니다(4-12절). 하나님은 전에 하셨던 일들을 지금도 다시 하고 계십니다.

SEEING BY FAITH

During my morning walk, the sun hit the waters of Lake Michigan at a perfect angle to produce a stunning view. I asked my friend to stop and wait for me as I positioned my camera to take a pic. Because of the position of the sun, I couldn’t see the image on my phone’s screen before I snapped the shot. But having done this before, I sensed it would be a great picture. I told me friend, “We can’t see it now, but pictures like this always come out good.”

Walking by faith through this life is often like taking that picture. You can’t always see the details on the screen, but that doesn’t mean the stunning picture isn’t there. You don’t always see God working, but you can trust that He’s there. As the writer of Hebrews penned, “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (11:1). By faith we place our confidence and assurance in God—especially when we can’t see or understand what He’s doing.

With faith, not seeing doesn’t prevent us from “taking the shot.” It just might make us pray more and seek God’s direction. We can also rely on knowing what’s happened in the past as others have walked by faith (VV. 4–12) as well as through our own stories. What God has done before, He can do again.

WORTHY OF ALL PRAISE

Many consider Ferrante and Teicher to be the greatest piano duet team of all time. Their collaborative presentations were so precise that their style was described as four hands but only one mind. Hearing their music, one can begin to grasp the amount of effort required to perfect their craft.

But there’s more. They loved what they did. In fact, even after they had retired in 1989, Ferrante and Teicher would occasionally show up at a local piano store just to play an impromptu concert. They simply loved making music.

David also loved making music—but he teamed up with God to give his song a higher purpose. His psalms affirm his strugglefilled life and his desire to live in deep dependence upon God. Yet, in the midst of his personal failures and imperfections, his praise expressed a kind of spiritual “perfect pitch,” acknowledging the greatness and goodness of God even in the darkest of times. The heart behind David’s praise is simply stated in Psalm 18:1, which reads, “I love you, Lord, my strength.”

David continued, “I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise” (V. 3) and turned to Him “in my distress” (V. 6). Regardless of our situation, may we likewise lift our hearts to praise and worship our God. He’s worthy of all praise!

추수감사절의 축복

2016년 완다 덴치는 손자가 최근 전화번호를 바꾼 사실을 모르고 추수감사절 만찬에 초대하는 문자를 보냈는데, 이 문자는 손자가 아닌 자말이라는 낯선 사람에게 전달되었습니다. 자말은 아무 계획도 없었기 때문에, 자신이 누구인지 밝히고 나서 그래도 그 저녁식사에 갈 수 있는지 물었습니다. 완다는 “물론 올 수 있어요”라고 대답했습니다. 이후 이것이 연중 행사가 되어 자말은 완다 할머니 가족 저녁식사에 매년 참석하게 되었습니다. 실수로 보낸 초대 메시지가 연례적인 축복이 된 것입니다.

낯선 사람을 저녁식사에 초대한 완다의 친절은 누가복음에 나오는 예수님의 격려의 말씀을 생각나게 합니다. “저명한” 바리새인의 집에서 열린 만찬에서(누가복음 14:1) 예수님은 초대받은 사람들이 어떤 사람들인지, 그래서 손님들이 좋은 자리를 차지하기 위해 어떻게 다투는지를 보셨습니다 (7절). 예수님은 집주인에게 보답으로 무엇을 해줄 수 있는지에 따라 사람들을 초대한다면(12절) 축복이 제한될 것이라고 하시면서, 오히려 보답할 것이 없는 사람들을 환대하는 것이 더 큰 축복을 가져다줄 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다 (14절).

자말을 가족 추수감사절 만찬에 초대함으로써 완다는 예상치 못한 지속적인 우정의 축복을 받아 남편의 사별 이후 큰 위로를 받게 되었습니다. 무엇을 얻기 위해서가 아닌, 우리를 통해 흘러나는 하나님의 사랑으로 다른 사람에게 다가갈 때 우리는 훨씬 더 큰 축복과 격려를 받게 됩니다.

A THANKSGIVING BLESSING

In 2016, Wanda Dench sent a text inviting her grandson to Thanksgiving dinner, not knowing he’d recently changed his phone number. The text instead went to a stranger, Jamal. Jamal didn’t have plans, and so, after clarifying who he was, asked if he could still come to dinner. Wanda said, “Of course you can.” Jamal joined the family dinner in what has since become a yearly tradition for him. A mistaken invitation became an annual blessing.

Wanda’s kindness in inviting a stranger to dinner reminds me of Jesus’ encouragement in Luke’s gospel. During a dinner party at a “prominent” Pharisee’s house (LUKE 14:1), Jesus noticed who was invited and how the guests jostled for the best seats (V. 7). Jesus told His host that inviting people based on what they could do for him in return (V. 12) meant the blessing would be limited. Instead, Jesus told the host that extending hospitality to people without the resources to repay him would bring even greater blessing (V. 14).

For Wanda, inviting Jamal to join her family for Thanksgiving dinner resulted in the unexpected blessing of a lasting friendship that was a great encouragement to her after her husband’s death. When we reach out to others, not because of what we might receive, but because of God’s love flowing through us, we receive far greater blessing and encouragement.

그 도시에 갔을 때 도박장이 가장 먼저 눈에 띄었고, 그 다음으로 대마초 상점, ”성인”용품점, 그리고 다른 사람의 사고로 돈을 벌어들일 기회를 노리는 변호사들의 커다란 광고판들이 보였습니다. 나는 이전에도 많은 암울한 도시들을 가 보았지만, 이곳은 더 밑바닥 도시 같았습니다.

하지만, 다음 날 아침 한 택시 기사와 이야기를 나누면서 기분이 밝아졌습니다. 그는 이렇게 말했습니다. “하나님께서 내가 돕기를 바라시는 사람들을 만나게 해 달라고 나는 매일 하나님께 간구합니다. 도박 중독자, 매춘부, 결손 가정의 사람들이 눈물을 흘리며 그들의 문제를 내게 말하면 나는 차를 세우고 그들의 이야기를 듣고는 그들을 위해 기도해 줍니다. 이것이 나의 사역입니다.”

바울 사도는 타락한 세상에 오신 예수님을 묘사한 후(빌립보서 2:5-8), 그리스도를 믿는 신자들에게 한 가지 소명을 줍니다. 우리가 하나님의 뜻을 따르고(13절) “생명의 말씀” 곧 복음(16절)을 붙잡으면 “비뚤어지고 잘못된 세대 가운데서 하나님의 흠 없는 자녀로서... 하늘의 별처럼 빚날”(15절, 현대인의 성경) 것입니다. 그 택시 기사처럼 우리도 예수님의 빛을 어둠 속에 비춰야 합니다.

역사학자 크리스토퍼 도슨은 바로 그 신실한 삶의 행위 안에 “거룩한 삶의 모든 신비가 담겨 있기” 때문에 예수 믿는 신자들이 세상을 변화시기 위해서는 오직 신실한 삶을 살기만 하면 된다고 말했습니다. 세상의 가장 어두운 곳에서 예수님의 빛을 비추며 예수님의 백성으로 신실하게 살 수 있도록 성령님께 능력을 달라고 간구합시다.

SHINING STARS

The first thing I noticed about the city was its gambling outlets. Next, its cannabis shops, “adult” stores, and giant billboards for opportunistic lawyers making money off others’ mishaps. While I had visited many shady cities before, this one seemed to reach a new low.

My mood brightened, however, when I spoke to a taxi driver the next morning. “I ask God every day to send me the people He wants me to help,” he said. “Gambling addicts, prostitutes, people from broken homes tell me their problems in tears. I stop the car. I listen. I pray for them. This is my ministry.”

After describing Jesus’ descent into our fallen world (PHILIPPIANS 2:5–8), the apostle Paul gives believers in Christ a calling. As we pursue God’s will (V. 13) and hold to the “word of life”—the gospel (V. 16)—we’ll be “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation” who “shine . . . like stars in the sky” (V. 15). Like that taxi driver, we’re to bring Jesus’ light into the darkness.

A believer in Christ has only to live faithfully in order to change the world, historian Christopher Dawson said, because in that very act of living “there is contained all the mystery of divine life.” Let’s ask God’s Spirit to empower us to live faithfully as Jesus’ people, shining His light in the world’s darkest places.

밍은 어렸을 때 아버지가 가혹하고 냉정하다는 것을 알았습니다. 밍이 아파서 소아과에 가야 할 때에도 아버지는 귀찮다고 투덜거렸습니다. 한번은, 아버지가 엄마와 다투는 소리를 엿듣고 아버지가 자신을 낙태시키려 했다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 자신이 원치 않는 아이였다는 감정은 어른이 되어서도 늘 그를 따라다녔습니다. 밍은 예수님을 믿고 나서도, 하나님이 그의 삶의 주인이심을 알았음에도 불구하고 하나님을 아버지로 받아들이기가 어려웠습니다.

밍처럼 육신의 아버지로부터 사랑을 받지 못했다면 하나님과의 관계에서도 그와 비슷한 의심을 가질 수 있습니다. ‘내가 하나님께 짐이 되는 것은 아닐까? 하나님은 내게 관심을 갖고 계실까?’ 라는 의문을 가질 수도 있습니다. 그러나 우리 육신의 아버지는 침묵하며 나와 멀리 떨어져 있을 지라도 우리 하나님 아버지는 가까이 오셔서 “내가 너를 사랑한다”(이사야 43:4)고 말씀하십니다.

PRECIOUS TO GOD

As a boy, Ming found his father harsh and distant. Even when Ming was ill and had to see the pediatrician, his father grumbled that it was troublesome. Once, he overheard a quarrel and learned his father had wanted him aborted. The feeling of being an unwanted child followed him into his adult years. When Ming became a believer in Jesus, he found it difficult to relate to God as Father, even though he knew Him as Lord of his life.

If, like Ming, we haven’t felt loved by our earthly fathers, we may face similar doubts in our relationship with God. We may wonder, Am I a burden to Him? Does He care about me? But while our earthly fathers may have been silent and distant, God our heavenly Father comes close and says, “I love you” (ISAIAH 43:4).

In Isaiah 43, God speaks as our Creator and as a Father. If you wonder whether He wants you to live under His care as part of His family, hear what He said to His people: “Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth” (V. 6). If you wonder what you’re worth to Him, hear His affirmation: “You are precious and honored in my sight” (V. 4).

God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to pay the penalty of sin so that we who believe in Him can be with Him forever (JOHN 3:16). Because of what He says and what He’s done for us, we can have full confidence that He wants us and loves us.

PRICELESS RESULTS

On every school day for three years, Colleen has been dressing up in a different costume or mask to greet her children as they exit the school bus each afternoon. It brightens the day of everyone on the bus—including the bus driver: “[She] bring[s] so much joy to the kids on my bus, it’s amazing. I love that.” Colleen’s children agree.

It all started when Colleen began fostering children. Knowing how difficult it was to be separated from parents and to attend a new school, she began greeting the kids in a costume. After three days of doing so, the kids didn’t want her to stop. So Colleen continued. It was an investment of time and money at thrift shops, but, as reporter Meredith TerHaar describes, it brought a “priceless result: happiness.”

One little verse amid a book of wise and witty advice, largely by King Solomon to his son, sums up the results of this mom’s antics: “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” (PROVERBS 17:22). By bringing cheer to all her kids (biological, adopted, and foster), she hoped to prevent crushed spirits.

The source of true and lasting joy is God through the Holy Spirit (LUKE 10:21; GALATIANS 5:22). The Spirit enables us to shine God’s light as we strive to bring joy to others, a joy that offers hope and strength to face trials.

GATHERING STRENGTH IN GOD

Grainger McKoy is an artist who studies and sculpts birds, capturing their grace, vulnerability, and power. One of his pieces is titled Recovery. It shows the single right wing of a pintail duck, stretched high in a vertical position. Below, a plaque describes the bird’s recovery stroke as “the moment of the bird’s greatest weakness in flight, yet also the moment when it gathers strength for the journey ahead.” Grainger includes this verse: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9).

The apostle Paul wrote these words to the church at Corinth. Enduring a season when he was overwhelmed with personal struggle, Paul begged God to remove what he described as “a thorn in my flesh” (V. 7). His affliction might have been a physical ailment or spiritual opposition. Like Jesus in the garden the night before His crucifixion (LUKE 22:39–44), Paul repeatedly asked God to remove his suffering. The Holy Spirit responded by assuring him that He’d provide the strength needed. Paul learned, “When I am weak, then I am strong” (2 CORINTHIANS 12:10). Oh, the thorns we experience in this life! Like a bird gathering its strength for the journey ahead, we can gather up God’s strength for what we’re facing. In His strength, we find our own.

사랑으로 상대하기

그는 많은 일들을 잘 처리했지만 한 가지 문제가 있었습니다. 누구나 다 그것을 알았습니다. 하지만 그는 자기가 맡은 역할을 대부분 아주 능률적으로 잘 수행했기 때문에, 그에게 있는 분노 문제가 제대로 다루어지지 않았습니다. 아무도 이 문제에 대해 진정으로 맞서지 못한 것입니다. 안타깝게도 여러 해 동안 많은 사람들이 그 일로 상처를 받았습니다. 결국 훨씬 많은 일을 성취할 수 있었을 그리스도 안에서의 그 형제의 경력은 일찍 끝나 버리고 말았습니다. 내가 오래 전에 그를 사랑으로 상대하기로 마음 먹었다면 어떻게 되었을까요?

창세기 4장에서 하나님은 누군가의 죄를 사랑으로 상대하는 것이 어떤 것인지 잘 보여주십니다. 가인은 격분했습니다. 농부인 가인은 “땅의 소산으로 제물을 삼아 여호와께 드렸습니다”(3절). 하지만 하나님은 그가 가져온 것을 받지 않겠다고 하셨습니다. 제물이 거절되자 가인은 “몹시 화가 나서 얼굴빛이 달라졌습니다”(5절, 새번역). 그래서 하나님은 그를 직접 대면하여 “어찌하여 네가 화를 내느냐?”(6절, 새번역)고 하시면서 가인에게 죄에서 돌아서서 선하고 옳은 것을 추구하라고 말씀하셨습니다. 하지만 안타깝게도 가인은 하나님의 말씀을 무시하고 끔찍한 일을 저질렀습니다(8절).

우리는 다른 사람들이 죄에서 돌아서도록 강요할 수는 없지만, 자비로운 마음으로 그들을 상대할 수는 있습니다. 우리는 “사랑으로 진리를 말함”으로 둘 다 “그리스도를 닮아갈” 수 있습니다(에베소서 4:15, 현대인의 성경). 하나님이 우리에게 들을 수 있는 귀를 허락하신다면 우리는 다른 사람이 주는 진실된 모진 말들도 받아들일 수 있습니다.

CONFRONTING IN LOVE

He did many things well, but there was a problem. Everyone saw it. Yet because he was so effective in accomplishing most of his role, his anger issue wasn’t adequately addressed. He was never truly confronted. Sadly, this resulted in many people being hurt over the years. And, in the end, it led to the premature close of a career that could have been something so much more for this brother in Christ. If only I’d chosen to confront him in love long ago.

In Genesis 4, God provides the perfect picture of what it means to confront someone’s sin in love. Cain was infuriated. Being a farmer, he’d presented “some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord” (V. 3). But God made it clear that what he brought Him wasn’t acceptable. Cain’s offering was rejected, and he was “very angry, and his face was downcast” (V. 5). So, God confronted him and said, “Why are you angry?” (V. 6). He then told Cain to turn from his sin and pursue what was good and right. Sadly, Cain ignored God’s words and committed a horrific act (V. 8).

While we can’t force others to turn from sinful behaviors, we can compassionately confront them. We can “speak the truth in love” so that we both become “more and more like Christ” (EPHESIANS 4:15 NLT). And, as God gives us ears to listen, we can also receive hard words of truth from others.

모험

“기독교는 나와는 안 맞아요. 재미가 없어요. 나는 모험을 가치 있게 여기는데, 모험은 마치 내게 인생과 같아요.” 한 젊은 여성이 그렇게 말했습니다. 나는 그 여성이 예수님을 따를 때 만날 수 있는 놀라운 기쁨과 흥분을, 다른 어느 것과도 비교할 수 없는 모험을 아직 모르고 있어서 마음이 아팠습니다. 그래서 나는 들뜬 마음으로 그에게 예수님을 전하고 주님 안에서 사는 진정한 삶에 대해 이야기해 주었습니다.

하나님의 아들 예수님을 알고 그와 동행하는 모험을 말로 설명하기에는 부족합니다. 하지만 바울 사도는 에베소서 1장에서 그분과 함께하는 삶에 대해 작지만 강력한 모습을 잠깐 보여줍니다. 하나님은 우리에게 하늘에 속한 모든 신령한 복을 주시고(3절), 하나님 앞에 거룩하고 흠이 없게 하시며(4절), 우리를 왕이신 하나님의 자녀로 삼아 주십니다(5절). 하나님은 우리에게 복 주셔서 그분의 풍성한 은혜와 용서가 우리에게 넘치게 하시고(7-8절), 그분의 뜻의 비밀을 깨닫게 하시며(9절), “그의 영광의 찬송이 되게” 하려는 새로운 목적을 갖고 살게 하십니다(12절). 그리고 성령님이 우리 안에 들어와 살면서 우리에게 능력을 주시고 인도하시며(13절), 하나님과 함께 영원히 사는 삶을 보증해 주십니다(14절).

예수님이 우리 삶에 들어오시면 그분을 더 많이 알고 가까이 따르는 것이 가장 위대한 모험이라는 것을 알게 됩니다. 진정한 삶을 위해 지금 그리고 매일 주님을 찾으십시오.

THE ADVENTURE

“Christianity is not for me. It’s boring. One of my values I hold on to is adventure. That’s life to me,” a young woman told me. It saddened me that she hadn’t yet learned the incredible joy and excitement that comes with following Jesus—an adventure like no other. I excitedly shared with her about Jesus and how real life is found in Him.

Mere words are inadequate to describe the adventure of knowing and walking with Jesus, God’s Son. But in Ephesians 1, the apostle Paul gives us a small but powerful glimpse of life with Him. God gives us spiritual blessings directly from heaven (V. 3), holiness and blamelessness in God’s eyes (V. 4), and adoption as His own into the King’s royal family (V. 5). He blesses us with the lavish gift of His forgiveness and grace (VV. 7–8), understanding of the mystery of His will (V. 9), and a new purpose of living “for the praise of his glory” (V. 12). The Holy Spirit comes to live in us to empower and lead us (V. 13), and He guarantees eternity in God’s presence forever (V. 14).

When Jesus Christ enters our life, we discover that getting to know Him more and following Him closely is the greatest of adventures. Seek Him now and every day for real life.

하나님의 선하심을 말하라

우리 교회에서는 예배 시간에 하나님께서 우리의 삶 가운데 어떻게 역사하셨는지 나누는 간증 시간이 있습니다. 교회 가족들에게 랭포드 자매로 알려져 있는 이모님은 간증을 하면서 하나님을 많이 찬양하는 것으로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 이모님이 개인적인 회심에 관해 이야기할 때면 보통 예배 시간의 상당 부분이 소요되었습니다. 그럴 때 이모님의 마음은 그 삶을 은혜롭게 변화시켜 주신 하나님을 향한 찬양으로 넘쳐 흘렀습니다!

마찬가지로 시편 66편 저자의 간증도 하나님께서 그의 백성들을 위해 행하신 일들을 증거하는 찬양으로 가득 차 있습니다. “와서 하나님께서 행하신 것을 보라 사람의 아들들에게 행하심이 엄위하시도다”(5절). 하나님은 기적을 베풀어 그의 백성들을 구원하시고(6절) 실족하지 않도록 보호하시며 (9절), 시험하고 단련시키시면서 더 좋은 곳으로 인도해 주셨습니다(10-12절). 우리에게는 다른 성도들과 공통적으로 갖는 하나님에 대한 체험이 있는가 하면, 우리 개인의 신앙 여정에 따른 고유한 체험들도 있습니다. 당신의 삶 속에서 하나님께서 특별히 그분 자신을 드러내신 적이 있습니까? 그런 간증들은 하나님께서 당신의 삶 가운데 어떻게 일하셨는지 다른 사람들이 알도록 함께 나눌 가치가 있습니다. “하나님을 두려워하는 너희들아 다 와서 들으라 하나님이 나의 영혼을 위하여 행하신 일을 내가 선포하리로다”(16절).

TELL OF GOD’S GOODNESS

Testimony time was the segment in our church service when people shared how God had been at work in their lives. Auntie—or Sister Langford as she was known by others in our church family—was known for packing lots of praise into her testimonies. On the occasions when she shared her personal conversion story, one could expect her to take up a good bit of the service. Her heart gushed with praise to God who’d graciously changed her life!

Similarly, the testimony of the writer of Psalm 66 is packed with praise as he testifies about what God had done for His people. “Come and see what God has done, his awesome deeds for mankind!” (V. 5). His deeds included miraculous rescue (V. 6), preservation (V. 9), and testing and discipline that resulted in His people being brought to a better place (VV. 10–12). While there are God-experiences that we have in common with other believers in Jesus, there are also things unique to our individual journeys. Have there been times in your life when God has particularly made Himself known to you? Those are worth sharing with others who need to hear how He’s worked in your life. “Come and hear, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me” (V. 16).
