상처 입은 자들을 위한 소망

“대부분의 사람들은 다른 사람 눈에 보이지 않거나 이해할 수 없는 상처를 안고 살아갑니다.” 정신 건강 문제로 2020년 정규 시즌을 포기했던 메이저리그 야구선수 안드렐튼 시몬스가 이렇게 마음 속 깊은 이야기를 솔직히 털어놓았습니다. 시몬스는 자신의 결정에 대해 이야기하면서, 그의 이야기를 사람들과 나누어 비슷한 어려움을 겪는 사람들에게 격려가 되고, 또 다른 사람들에게 긍휼히 여기는 마음을 갖게 해주고 싶었다고 했습니다.

깊은 마음의 상처는 눈에 보이지 않아도 매우 쓰라린 아픔과 고통을 줍니다. 시편 6편에서 다윗은 고통스러울 정도로 있는 그대로의 솔직한 말로 자신이 겪고 있는 깊은 고난에 대해 썼습니다. 그는 고통스러웠고(2절) 마음이 심히 괴로웠으며(3절), 슬퍼하다 지쳐 눈물로 침상을 적셨습니다(6절). 다윗은 그의 고통의 이유를 말하지는 않지만 많은 사람들이 그의 아픔에 공감할 수 있습니다.

HOPE FOR THE HURTING

“Most people carry scars that others can’t see or understand.” Those deeply honest words came from Major League Baseball player Andrelton Simmons, who opted out of the end of the 2020 regular season due to mental health struggles. Reflecting on his decision, Simmons felt he needed to share his story to encourage others facing similar challenges and to remind others to show compassion.

Invisible scars are those deep hurts and wounds that can’t be seen but still cause very real pain and suffering. In Psalm 6, David wrote of his own deep struggle—penning painfully raw and honest words. He was “in agony” (V. 2) and “deep anguish” (V. 3). He was “worn out” from groaning, and his bed was drenched with tears (V. 6). While David doesn’t share the cause of his suffering, many of us can relate to his pain.

We can also be encouraged by the way David responded to his pain. In the midst of his overwhelming suffering, David cried out to God. Honestly pouring out his heart, he prayed for healing (V. 2), res­cue (V. 4), and mercy (V. 9). Even with the question “How long?” (V. 3) lingering over his situation, David remained confident that God “heard [his] cry for mercy” (V. 9) and would act in His time (V. 10).

Because of who our God is, there is always hope.

혹 #슬로우패션에 대해 들어 보셨습니까? 이 해시태그는 저가로 만들어 얼마 안 입고 버리는 “패스트 패션” 의류산업에 대항하여 나온 새로운 운동입니다. 패스트 패션에서는 옷이 점포에 들어오자마자 곧 유행이 지나가버려 어떤 브랜드들은 매년 엄청난 양의 상품을 그대로 폐기합니다.

슬로우 패션 운동은 사람들이 천천히, 그리고 다른 방식으로 사는 것을 권합니다. 항상 최신 유행을 따라가려는 강박감에 이끌리는 대신, 몇 벌을 사더라도 오래 입을 수 있는 질 좋고 윤리적으로 근거가 있는 품목들을 사라고 권장합니다.

나는 #슬로우패션의 초대에 대해 되돌아 보다가, 내 삶에서 항상 최신 유행에서 만족을 얻으려 하는 “패스트 패션” 사고 방식에 빠져 있는 것은 없는지 생각해 보았습니다. 그러나 바울은 골로새서 3장에서 예수님 안에서의 진정한 변화는 손쉬운 방법이나 유행을 따라 되는 것이 아니라고 말합니다. 그것은 평생을 거쳐 그리스도 안에서 조용히 점진적으로 이루어지는 변화입니다.

우리는 세상에서 지위를 상징하는 최신 옷을 입으려 하기보다 “긍휼과 자비와 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음”(12절)의 성령의 옷을 입기를 힘써야 합니다. 그리스도께서 우리 마음을 서서히 변화시키시는 과정 중에 우리는 서로에 대해 참아주는 것을 배울 수 있습니다. 그 과정을 지나 우리는 흔들리지 않는 마음의 평강에 이르게 됩니다(15절).

SLOW-FASHIONED GRACE

Have you heard of #slowfashion? The hashtag captures a movement focused on resisting “fast fashion”—an industry dominated by cheaply made and quickly disposed of clothes. In fast fashion, clothes are out of style nearly as quickly as they’re in the stores—with some brands disposing of large quantities of their products every year.

The slow fashion movement encourages people to slow down and take a different approach. Instead of being driven by the need to always have the latest look, slow fashion encourages us to select fewer well-made and ethically sourced items that will last. As I reflected on #slowfashion’s invitation, I found myself wondering about other ways I fall into a “fast fashion” way of thinking—always looking for fulfillment in the latest trend. In Colossians 3, however, Paul says finding true transformation in Jesus isn’t a quick fix or a fad. It’s a lifetime of quiet, gradual transformation in Christ.

Instead of needing to clothe ourselves with the world’s latest status symbols, we can exchange our striving for the Spirit’s clothing of “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (V. 12). We can learn patience with each other on the slow journey of Christ transforming our hearts—a journey that leads to lasting peace (V. 15). - MONICA LA ROSE

WISDOM WE NEED

In his monumental book The Great Influenza, John M. Barry recounts the story of the 1918 flu epidemic. Barry reveals how health officials, rather than being caught off guard, anticipated a massive outbreak. They feared that World War I, with hundreds of thousands of troops crammed into trenches and moving across borders, would unleash new viruses. But this knowledge was useless to stop the devastation. Powerful leaders, beating the drums of war, rushed toward violence. And epidemiologists estimate that fifty million people died in the epidemic, adding to the roughly twenty million killed in the war’s carnage.

We’ve proven over and again that our human knowledge will never be enough to rescue us from evil (PROVERBS 4:14–16). Though we’ve amassed immense knowledge and present remarkable insights, we still can’t stop the pain we inflict on one another. We can’t halt “the way of the wicked,” this foolish, repetitive path that leads to “deep darkness.” Despite our best knowledge, we really have no idea “what makes [us] stumble” (V. 19).

That’s why we must “get wisdom, get understanding” (V. 5). Wisdom teaches us what to do with knowledge. And true wisdom, this wisdom we desperately require, comes from God.

선택

친한 친구가 세상을 떠나고 몇 주 안 지나 친구의 어머니와 이야기를 나누었습니다. 아직 애도 기간인데 어머니에게 잘 지내시냐고 묻는 것이 적절치 않게 느껴져 망설였습니다. 그러나 주저함을 뒤로하고 어떻게 견디고 계시는지 간단히 물었습니다. 어머니는 “있잖아, 나는 기쁨을 선택했단다.”라고 대답했습니다.

그날 친구 어머니의 말은 삶의 어려운 상황을 극복하려고 애쓰던 나에게 도움이 되었습니다. 또한 신명기 끝에서 모세가 이스라엘 백성에게 했던 명령도 생각나게 해주었습니다. 모세가 죽기 바로 전 이스라엘 백성이 약속의 땅에 들어가기 전에 하나님은 그들에게 선택권이 있음을 알기를 원하셨습니다. 모세는 말했습니다. “내가 생명과 사망을... 네 앞에 두었은즉 생명을 택하라” (신명기 30:19). 그들은 하나님의 법에 순종하며 잘 살 수도 있고, 하나님을 떠나 “사망과 화”(15절)의 결과를 안고 살 수도 있었습니다.

우리도 어떻게 살 것인지 선택해야 합니다. 우리의 삶을 향한 하나님의 약속을 믿고 신뢰하여 기쁨을 선택할 수도 있고, 아니면 삶의 부정적이고 어려운 것들에 마음을 두는 쪽을 선택하여 기쁨을 빼앗길 수도 있습니다. 훈련도 필요하고 성령님의 도우심에 의지해야 하지만, 우리는 “하나님을 사랑하는 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이룬다”(로마서 8:28)는 것을 알고 기쁨을 선택할 수 있습니다.

A CHOICE

A few weeks after the death of a dear friend, I spoke with her mom. I was hesitant to ask how she was doing because I thought it was an inappropriate question; she was grieving. But I pushed aside my reluctance and simply asked how she was holding up. Her reply: “Listen, I choose joy.”

Her words ministered to me that day as I struggled to push beyond some unpleasant circumstances in my own life. And her words also reminded me of Moses’ edict to the Israelites at the end of Deuteronomy. Just before Moses’ death and the Israelites’ entrance into the promised land, God wanted them to know that they had a choice. Moses said, “I have set before you life and death . . . . Now choose life” (DEUTERONOMY 30:19). They could follow God’s laws and live well, or they could turn away from Him and live with the consequences of “death and destruction” (V. 15).

We must choose how to live too. We can choose joy by believ- ing and trusting in God’s promises for our lives. Or we can choose to focus on the negative and difficult parts of our journeys, allowing them to rob us of joy. It will take practice and relying on the Holy Spirit for help, but we can choose joy—knowing that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him” (ROMANS 8:28). - KATARA PATTON

더 좋은 일이 어디 있겠습니까?

에릭은 20대 초반에 자신을 향한 예수님의 사랑에 대해 들었습니다. 그는 교회에 다니기 시작했고 거기서 그리스도를 더 잘 알도록 도와주는 사람을 만났습니다. 오래지 않아 에릭의 멘토는 그에게 교회의 남학생 소그룹 교사 자리를 맡겼습니다. 해를 거듭하며 하나님은 에릭의 마음에 감동을 주어, 위험에 노출된 도시 청소년들을 돕고 노약자들을 찾아가고 이웃을 섬기는 일로 하나님의 영광을 드러내게 하셨습니다. 이제 50대 후반이 된 에릭은 젊은 나이에 섬김을 배울 수 있었던 것이 얼마나 감사한지를 이렇게 설명합니다. “예수님 안에서 발견한 소망을 전하고 싶은 마음이 제 안에 넘칩니다. 주님을 섬기는 것보다 더 좋은 일이 어디 있겠습니까?”

WHAT COULD BE BETTER?

Eric heard about Jesus’ love for him while in his early twenties. He started attending church where he met someone who helped him grow to know Christ better. It wasn’t long before Eric’s mentor assigned him to teach a small group of boys at church. Through the years, God drew Eric’s heart to help at-risk youth in his city, to visit the elderly, and to show hospitality to his neighbors—all for God’s honor. Now in his late fifties, Eric explains how grateful he is that he was taught early to serve: “My heart overflows to share the hope I’ve found in Jesus. What could be better than to serve Him?”

Timothy was a child when his mother and grandmother influenced him in his faith (2 TIMOTHY 1:5). And he was likely a young adult when he met the apostle Paul, who saw potential in Timothy’s service for God and invited him on a ministry journey (ACTS 16:1–3). Paul became his mentor in ministry and life. He encouraged him to study, to be courageous as he faced false teaching, and to use his talents in service to God (1 TIMOTHY 4:6–16).

Why did Paul want Timothy to be faithful in serving God? He wrote, “Because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people” (V. 10). Jesus is our hope and the Savior of the world. What could be better than to serve Him? - ANNE CETAS

떠날 준비

코로나 대유행 기간 동안 많은 이들이 사랑하는 사람을 잃는 슬픔을 겪었습니다. 코로나 때문은 아니었지만 어머니 비 크라우더도 2020 년 11월 27일 95세의 나이로 돌아가셔서 우리 가족도 그 중 하나가 되었습니다. 다른 많은 가족들처럼 우리도 함께 모여 어머니를 잃은 슬픔을 나눌 수도, 그의 삶을 기리며 서로 위로할 수도 없었습니다. 대신에 우리는 어머니가 우리에게 끼친 아름다운 것들을 다른 방법으로 기념하다가, 하나님이 부르시면 언제나 떠날 준비가 되어 있으며 실제로 더 가고 싶다고 어머니가 늘 말씀하신 것에서 큰 위로를 얻었습니다. 어머니는 그의 삶의 많은 부분에서
증명된 그 확실한 소망을 가지고 죽음을 맞이하신 것입니다.

바울은 죽음의 위기 앞에서 이렇게 기록했습니다. “이는 내게 사는 것이 그리스도니 죽는 것도 유익함이라... 내가 그 둘 사이에 끼었으니 차라리 세상을 떠나서 그리스도와 함께 있는 것이 훨씬 더 좋은 일이라 그렇게 하고 싶으나 내가 육신으로 있는 것이 너희를 위하여 더 유익하리라”(빌립보서 1:21, 23-24). 세상에 남아 다른 이들을 돕고 싶은 그의 타당한 바람이 있었음에도, 바울은
그리스도와 함께 하는 천국으로 마음이 끌렸습니다.

그런 확신이 있으면 우리가 이생에서 다음 생으로 가는 순간을 바라보는 시각이 달라집니다. 우리의 그런 소망은 상실의 기간을 지나는 다른 이들에게 큰 위안이 될 수 있습니다. 누구나 사랑하는 사람을 잃으면 슬퍼하지만 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 “소망 없는 다른 이”와 같이 슬퍼하지 않습니다(데살로니가전서 4:13). 예수님을 아는 사람들에게는 참된 소망이 있습니다.

READY TO GO

During the coronavirus pandemic, many suffered the loss of loved ones. On November 27, 2020, our family joined their ranks when Bee Crowder, my ninety-five-year-old mom,
died—though not from COVID-19. Like so many other families, we weren’t able to gather to grieve Mom, honor her life, or encourage one another. Instead, we used other means to celebrate her loving influence—and we found great comfort from her insistence that, if God called her home, she was ready and even eager to go. That confident hope, evidenced in so much of Mom’s living, was also how she faced death.

Facing possible death, Paul wrote, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. . . . I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body” (PHILIPPIANS 1:21, 23–24). Even with his legitimate desire to stay and help others, Paul was drawn to his heavenly home with Christ.

Such confidence changes how we view the moment when we step from this life to the next. Our hope can give great comfort to others in their own season of loss. Although we grieve the loss of those we love, believers in Jesus don’t grieve like those “who have no hope” (1 THESSALONIANS 4:13). True hope is the possession of those who know Him. - BILL CROWDER

생명을 찾다

브렛이 기독교 대학에 진학하여 성경공부를 한 것은 어쩌면 당연한 일이었습니다. 지금까지 살면서 집이나 학교나 교회 등, 그의 주변에는 언제나 예수님을 믿는 사람들이 있었으니까요. 대학에 가서도 그는 “기독교 사역”을 직업으로 가지려고 공부를 했습니다.

그러던 브렛이 스물 한 살 때 어느 오래된 시골 교회에서 작은 회중과 함께 목사님의 요한1서 설교를 듣다가 놀라운 사실을 발견했습니다. 그동안 자기가 종교적인 지식이나 의식 같은 것만 붙들고 살았지 정작 예수님 안에서 진정한 구원을 받지 못했다는 것을 알게 된 것입니다. 그는 그날 예수님이 “너는 나를 모른다!”라고 정신이 번쩍 들도록 말씀하시면서 그의 마음을 끌어당기시는 것을 느꼈습니다.

요한 사도는 “예수께서 그리스도이심을 믿는 자마다 하나님께로부터 난 자”(요한1서 5:1)라고 분명하게 말했습니다. 우리는 요한의 말처럼 예수님을 믿는 믿음으로만 “세상을 이길 수” 있습니다(4절). 예수님에 대해 아는 지식이 아니라, 예수님이 우리를 위해 십자가에서 하신 일을 믿는 깊고 진실한 믿음을 말하는 것입니다. 그 날 브렛은 오직 그리스도만을 믿는 믿음을 갖게 되었습니다.

지금, 예수님과 그분의 구원을 향한 브렛의 깊은 사랑은 누구나 다 압니다. 그 사랑은 브렛이 목사가 되어 강대상에 서서 설교할 때마다 크고 분명하게 울려 나옵니다. 그가 바로 우리 목사님입니다.

“하나님이 우리에게 영생을 주신 것과 이 생명이 그의 아들 안에 있는 그것이니라 아들이 있는 자에게는 생명이 있다”(11-12절). 예수님 안에서 생명을 찾은 모든 사람들에게 이 말씀은 기억할 때마다 얼마나 위안이 되는지 모릅니다!

FINDING LIFE

It was a natural step for Brett to attend a Christian college and study the Bible. After all, he’d been around people who knew Jesus his whole life—at home, at school, at church. He was even gearing his college studies toward a career in “Christian work.”

But at age twenty-one, as he sat with the small congregation in an old country church and listened to a pastor preach from 1 John, he made a startling discovery. He realized that he was depending on knowledge and the trappings of religion and that he’d never truly received salvation in Jesus. He felt that Christ was tugging at his heart that day with a sobering message: “You don’t know Me!”

The apostle John’s message is clear: “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God” (1 JOHN 5:1). We can “overcome the world,” as John puts it (V. 4) only by belief in Jesus. Not knowledge about Him, but deep, sincere faith—demonstrated by our belief in what He did for us on the cross. That day, Brett placed his faith in Christ alone.

Today, Brett’s deep passion for Jesus and His salvation are no secret. It comes through loud and clear every time he steps behind the pulpit and preaches as a pastor—my pastor.

“God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life” (VV. 11–12). For all who have found life in Jesus, what a comforting reminder this is! - DAVE BRANON

아빠가 보여요!

세살 난 안드레아스는 검안사의 도움으로 태어나서 처음으로 안경을 맞췄습니다. “거울로 봐” 하는 검안사의 말에 안드레아스는 거울 속 자신의 모습을 잠깐 보고는 행복하고 사랑스러운 미소를 띠며 아버지 쪽을 돌아보았습니다. 아버지는 아들의 뺨을 타고 흐르는 눈물을 부드럽게 닦아주며 “왜 그래?” 하고 물었습니다. 안드레아스는 아버지의 목을 팔로 껴안으며 “아빠가 보여요”라고 말했습니다. 아이는 뒤로 물러나 고개를 약간 젖히더니 다시 아버지와 눈을 맞추며 말했습니다. “아빠가 보여요!”

우리가 기도하는 마음으로 성경을 공부할 때 성령님은 “보이지 아니하는 하나님의 형상”(골로새서 1:15)이신 예수님을 볼 수 있게 해 주십니다. 그러나 성경을 통해 지식이 자라고 성령님이 우리의 눈을 맑게 하시더라도 이곳에서는 무한히 크신 하나님을 그저 희미하게만 볼 수 있을 뿐입니다. 이 세상에서의 우리의 시간이 끝나거나, 아니면 다시 오겠다고 하신 예수님의 약속이 이루어질 때 우리는 주님을 선명히 보게 될 것입니다(고린도전서 13:12).

우리가 그리스도를 얼굴과 얼굴을 마주하여 보고 또 그리스도가 그의 몸 된 교회의 사랑하는 지체들인 우리를 아신 것 같이 우리가 그를 알게 되는, 그런 기쁨이 충만한 그 순간에 우리에게는 특별한 안경이 필요하지 않을 것입니다. 우리가 사랑하는 살아 계신 구주를 바라보며 “예수님, 이제 보입니다. 예수님이 보여요!”라고 말하게 될 그날까지, 성령님은 우리가 굳건히 서는데 필요한 믿음과 소망, 사랑을 불어넣어 주실 것입니다.

I CAN SEE YOU!

The optometrist helped three-year-old Andreas adjust his first pair of glasses. “Look in the mirror,” she said. Andreas glanced at his reflection, then turned to his father with a joyful and loving smile. Then Andreas’ father gently wiped the tears that slipped down his son’s cheeks and asked, “What’s wrong?” Andreas wrapped his arms around his father’s neck. “I can see you.” He pulled back, tilted his head, and gazed into his father’s eyes. “I can see you!”

As we prayerfully study the Bible, the Holy Spirit gives us eyes to see Jesus, the “image of the invisible God” (COLOSSIANS 1:15). However, even with our vision cleared by the Spirit as we grow in knowledge through Scripture, we can still only see a glimpse of God’s infinite immensity on this side of eternity. When our time on earth is done or when Jesus fulfills His promise to return, we’ll see Him clearly (1 CORINTHIANS 13:12).

We won’t need special glasses in that joy-filled moment when we see Christ face-to-face and know Him as He knows each of us, the beloved members of the body of Christ—the church. The Holy Spirit will infuse us with the faith, hope, and love we need to stand firm, until we gaze at our loving and living Savior and say, “I can see You, Jesus. I can see You!” - XOCHITL DIXON

작가 아서 브룩스는 ‘더 아틀란틱’이라는 잡지에 쓴 글에서 세계에서 가장 많은 중국 예술작품을 소장하고 있는 곳 중의 하나인 대만의
국립고궁박물관을 방문했던 이야기를 하고 있습니다. 그때 박물관 가이 드가 그 에게 이렇게 물었습다. “작업이 아직 시작되지 않은 어떤 예술작품을 상상해보라고 하면 무엇이 떠오르세요?” “글쎄요. 아무것도 안 그린 화폭?” 그러자 가이드가 이렇게 말했습니다. “하지만 다르게 볼 수도 있어요. 예술작품은 이미 거기 있는데, 작가의 역할은 단지 그것을 드러내 보이는 것이지요.”

에베소서 2장 10절에서 “솜씨” 또는 “걸작”으로 번역되는 ‘만드신 바’ 라는 말은 헬라어 ‘포이에마’에서 온 것으로, 지금 우리가 쓰는 ‘시’라는 단어의 어원입니다. 하나님은 우리를 예술작품인 살아있는 시로 창조하셨습니다. 그러나 “여러분은 불순종과 죄 때문에 영적으로 죽었던 사람들입니다”(1절, 현대인의 성경)라고 하신 말씀처럼 예술작품인 우리는 그 빛을 잃었습니다. 박물관 가이드의 말을 빌리자면, “[우리라는] 예술작품은 이미 거기 있는데, 그것을 드러내 보이게 만드는 것은 예술가 하나님의 역할인 것입니다.” 참으로 하나님은 그분의 위대한 작품인 우리를 회복시키고 계십니다. “자비가 풍성하신 하나님은... 우리를... 다시 살려주셨습니다”(4-5절, 현대인의 성경).

THE MASTERPIECE WITHIN

Writing in The Atlantic, author Arthur C. Brooks tells of his visit to the National Palace Museum in Taiwan, which contains one of the largest collections of Chinese art in the world. The museum guide asked, “What do you think of when I ask you to imagine a work of art yet to be started?” Brooks said, “An empty canvas, I guess.” The guide replied, “There’s another way to view it: The art already exists, and the job of artists is simply to reveal it.”

In Ephesians 2:10, the word handiwork, sometimes translated as “workmanship” or “masterpiece,” is from the Greek word poiēma, from which we derive our word poetry. God has created us as works of art, living poems. However, our art has become obscured: “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins” (V. 1). To paraphrase the words of the museum guide, “The art [of us] is already there, and it’s the job of the Divine Artist to reveal it.” Indeed, God is restoring us, His masterpieces: “God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive” (VV. 4–5).

As we go through challenges and difficulties, we might take comfort in knowing that the Divine Artist is at work: “It is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good
purpose” (PHILIPPIANS 2:13). Know that God is working in you to reveal His masterpiece. - KENNETH PETERSEN

한국제 연구팀이 칼새라는 한 특별한 새의 움직임을 본떠 날갯짓을 하는 드론을 만들었습니다. 칼새는 시속 90마일(약 145킬로미터)까지 날 수 있고, 공중에 떠 있다가 급강하, 급회전, 급정지를 할 수 있습니다. 그러나 날개를 위아래로 흔들면서 나는 그 드론은 아직 새와는 비교할 바가 못 됩니다. 한 연구원은 새들은 “다양한 용도의 근육들이 있어 매우 빠르게 날기도 하고, 날개를 접기도 하고, 몸을 돌리고, 깃털을 펴고, 힘을 아낄 수도 있다”고 하면서, 자기 팀이 노력은 했지만 “실제 새들의 비행의 10퍼센트” 정도 밖에 모방할 수 없었다고 인정했습니다.

하나님은 세상의 생물에게 온갖 놀라운 능력을 주셨습니다. 우리가 그들을 관찰하며 그들의 기술을 유추해보면 지혜를 얻을 수 있습니다. 개미는 우리에게 자원을 모으는 방법을 가르쳐주고, 오소리는 안전한 집의 중요함을 보여주며, 메뚜기는 여럿이 함께 하면 강하다는 것을 가르쳐줍니다(잠언 30:25-27).

ELEGANT DESIGN

An international research team has created a flapping-wing drone that mimics the movements of a particular bird—the swift. Swifts can fly up to ninety miles per hour and are able to hover, plunge, turn quickly, and stop suddenly. The ornithopter drone, however, is still inferior to the bird. One researcher said birds “have multiple sets of muscles which enable them to fly incredibly fast, fold their wings, twist, open feather slots and save energy.” He admitted that his team’s efforts were still only able to replicate about “10 percent of biological flight.”

God has given the creatures in our world all kinds of amazing abilities. Observing them and reflecting on their know-how can be a source of wisdom for us. The ants teach us about gathering resources, rock badgers show us the value of dependable shelter, and locusts teach us there’s strength in numbers (PROVERBS 30:25–27).

The Bible tells us that “[God] founded the world by his wisdom” (JEREMIAH 10:12), and at the end of each step in the creation process, He confirmed that what He’d done was “good” (GENESIS 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31). The same God who created birds to “fly above the earth across the vault of the sky” (V. 20), has given us the ability to combine His wisdom with our own reasoning.
