위로가 되는 하나님의 언약

여러 해 전 우리 가족은 미국에서 네 개의 주가 한 곳에서 만나는 유일한 장소인 포코너스(네 모퉁이)에 가보았습니다. 남편은 아리조나주로 표시된 쪽에 섰고, 큰 아들 에이 제이는 유타주로 건너갔습니다. 작은 아들 제비어는 내 손을 잡고 콜로라도주에 함께 발을 디뎠습니다. 내가 뉴멕시코주로 건너가자 제비어는 “엄마가 날 콜로라도에 버려두고 가다니!” 라고 소리쳤습니다. 우리는 함께 있었지만 동시에 네 개의 다른 주에서 들려오는 웃음 소리를 들었습니다. 장성한 아들들이 집을 떠난 지금, 나는 그들이 어디에 있든지 하나님께서 그의 ‘모든’ 백성들 가까이 계시겠다고 하신 그분의 약속에 더 깊이 감사하고 있습니다.

모세가 죽은 뒤 하나님은 여호수아를 지도자로 부르시면서 이스라엘 영토를 넓힐 때(여호수아 1:1-4) 항상 함께 하겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 하나님은 “모세와 함께 있었던 것 같이 너와 함께 있을 것임이니라 내가 너를 떠나지 아니하며 버리지 아니하리라”(5절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 새로 하나님의 백성을 이끌 지도자가 된 여호수아가 의심과 두려움으로 씨름할 것을 아신 하나님은 이렇게 말씀하시며 소망을 갖게 하셨습니다. “내가 네게 명령한 것이 아니냐 강하고 담대하라 두려워하지 말며 놀라지 말라 네가 어디로 가든지 네 하나님 여호와가 너와 함께 하느니라”(9절).

하나님이 우리와 우리가 사랑하는 사람들을 어디로 인도하시든지, 그리고 아무리 어려운 때라도 가장 큰 위로를 주는 하나님의 이 언약이 하나님이 우리와 ‘언제나’ 함께 하신다는 사실을 확인시켜 줍니다.

GOD’S COMFORTING COMMITMENT

Years ago, our family visited Four Corners, the only place in the United States where four states meet at one location. My husband stood in the section marked Arizona. Our oldest son, A.J., hopped into Utah. Our youngest son, Xavier, held my hand as we stepped into Colorado. When I scooted into New Mexico, Xavier said, “Mom, I can’t believe you left me in Colorado!” We were together and apart as our laughter was heard in four different states. Now that our grown sons have left home, I have a deeper appreciation of God’s promise to be near all His people wherever they go.

After Moses died, God called Joshua into leadership and guaranteed His presence as He expanded the Israelite’s territory (JOSHUA 1:1–4). God said, “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you” (V. 5). Knowing that Joshua would struggle with doubt and fear as the new leader of His people, God built a foundation of hope on these words: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (V. 9).

No matter where God leads us or our loved ones, even through difficult times, His most comforting commitment assures us that He’s always present.

어두움과 하나님의 빛

일레인이 자신의 암이 많이 진행됐다는 진단을 받자, 그녀와 남편 척은 일레인이 예수님 곁으로 갈 날이 얼마 남지 않은 것을 알았습니다. 두 사람은 하나님이 늘 함께 계실 것이라 약속하신 시편 23편의 말씀을 붙잡고 54년을 함께 살아오면서 삶의 깊고 험한 골짜기들을 건너왔습니다. 그들은 일레인이 수십 년 동안 믿어 온 예수님을 이제 곧 만나게 된다는 사실에 소망을 가졌습니다.

아내의 장례식에서 남편 척은 자신이 ‘여전히’ “사망의 음침한 골짜기를” (시편 23:4) 지나고 있음을 고백했습니다. 아내는 이미 천국에서의 삶을 시작 했지만, 일레인을 깊이 사랑했던 남편과 다른 이들에게는 여전히 “사망의 음침함”이 있었습니다.

우리가 어둠의 골짜기를 지날 때 빛의 근원을 어디서 찾을 수 있을까요? 요한 사도는 “하나님은 빛이시라 그에게는 어둠이 조금도 없으시다”(요한1 서 1:5)고 말합니다. 그리고 예수님은 요한복음 8장 12절에서 “나는 세상의 빛이니 나를 따르는 자는 어둠에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻으리라”고 말씀하셨습니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리는 “주의 얼굴 빛 안에서 다닙니다”(시편 89:15). 우리 하나님은 우리가 가장 어두운 곳을 지날 때에도 우리와 함께 계시며 우리의 빛의 근원이 되어 주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다.

SHADOW AND GOD’S LIGHT

When Elaine was diagnosed with advanced cancer, she and her husband, Chuck, knew it wouldn’t be long until she’d be with Jesus. Both of them treasured the promise of Psalm 23 that God would be with them as they journeyed through the deepest and most difficult valley of their fifty-four years together. They took hope in the fact that Elaine was ready to meet Jesus, having placed her faith in Him decades before.

At his wife’s memorial service, Chuck shared that he was still traveling “through the valley of the shadow of death” (PSALM 23:4 NKJV). His wife’s life in heaven had already begun. But the “shadow of death” was still with him and with others who’d greatly loved Elaine.

As we travel through the valley of shadows, where can we find our source of light? The apostle John declares that “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all” (1 JOHN 1:5). And in John 8:12, Jesus proclaimed: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

As believers in Jesus, we “walk in the light of [His] presence” (PSALM 89:15). Our God has promised to be with us and to be our source of light even when we travel through the darkest of shadows.

예수님께 내려놓기

1951년 조셉 스탈린의 주치의가 그에게 건강을 지키려면 일을 줄여야 한다고 소견을 말했습니다. 그러자 이 소련의 통치자는 의사를 간첩죄로 고발하여 잡아가게 했습니다. 거짓으로 많은 사람들을 억압하며 진실을 따라 살 수 없었던 이 폭군은 수많은 사람에게 한 것처럼 그에게 진실을 말해준 의사도 제거해 버렸습니다. 하지만 그럼에도 진실이 승리했습니다. 1953년 스탈린이 죽은 것입니다.

무서운 예언을 했다고 잡혀서 수감되었던 예레미야 선지자는(예레미야 38:1-6; 40:1) 예루살렘에 정확히 어떤 일들이 일어날 것인지 유다 왕에게 말했습니다. 그는 시드기야 왕에게 “내가 왕에게 아뢴 바 여호와의 목소리에 순종하소서”라고 말했습니다(38:20). 성을 포위한 군대에 항복하지 않으면 상황이 더욱 악화될 뿐이었습니다. 예레미야는 경고했습니다. “네 아내들과 자녀는 갈대아인에게로 끌려가겠고 너는 그들의 손에서 벗어나지 못하리라”(23 절).

시드기야는 그 진실에 대응하여 행하지 않았습니다. 결국 바벨론 사람들은 왕을 사로잡고 그의 아들들을 모두 죽이고 도시를 불태웠습니다(39장).

어떤 의미에서 사람들에게는 모두 시드기야가 가졌던 딜레마가 있습니다. 우리는 자신의 죄와 잘못된 선택이라는 삶의 벽 안에 갇혀 있습니다. 우리도 우리 자신에 대해 진실을 말해주는 사람들을 피하고 상황을 더 나쁘게 만들 때가 많이 있습니다. 우리가 할 일은 “내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라”(요한복음 14:6)고 하신 예수님의 뜻에 우리 자신을 내려놓는 것입니다.

SURRENDERING TO JESUS

In 1951, Joseph Stalin’s doctor advised him to reduce his workload in order to preserve his health. The ruler of the Soviet Union accused the physician of spying and had him arrested. The tyrant who had oppressed so many with lies couldn’t abide the truth, and—as he had done so many times—he removed the one who told him the facts. Truth won anyway. Stalin died in 1953.

The prophet Jeremiah, arrested for his dire prophecies and kept in chains (JEREMIAH 38:1–6; 40:1), told the king of Judah exactly what would happen to Jerusalem. “Obey the Lord by doing what I tell you,” he said to King Zedekiah (38:20). Failure to surrender to the army surrounding the city would only make matters worse. “All your wives and children will be brought out to the Babylonians,” Jeremiah warned. “You yourself will not escape from their hands” (V. 23).

Zedekiah failed to act on that truth. Eventually the Babylonians caught the king, killed all his sons, and burned the city (CH. 39).

In a sense, every human being faces Zedekiah’s dilemma. We’re trapped inside the walls of our own lives of sin and poor choices. Often, we make things worse by avoiding those who tell us the truth about ourselves. All we need to do is surrender to the will of the One who said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (JOHN 14:6).

선행 쌓기

사업을 경영하는 가장 좋은 방법으로 친절이나 넉넉한 마음 같은 자질을 최우선으로 꼽는 사람은 아마도 많지 않을 것입니다. 그러나 사업가 제임스 리는 그래야 한다고 말합니다. 파산 위기까지 몰렸던 회사의 최고경영자 제임스 리의 경험에 의하면, 그가 말하는 “선행,” 곧 “친절의 문화” 와 나눔의 정신을 최우선으로 삼은 것이 회사를 살렸고 큰 성공으로 이끌었다고 합니다. 이 같은 가치를 중심에 두자, 사람들이 힘을 모으거나 혁신하고 문제를 해결하는데 필요했던 희망과 의욕을 갖게 되었던 것입니다. 그는 “선행은... 화합할 수 있고 또 확대될 수 있는 진짜 자산입니다.”라고 말합니다.

일상생활에서도 친절 같은 것은 막연하고 만져지지 않는 것이라 우선순위에서 밀리기 쉽습니다. 그러나 바울 사도가 가르친 대로 그같은 자질이 무엇보다 중요합니다.

바울은 처음 믿는 사람들에게 보낸 그의 편지에서 믿는 사람들의 삶의 목적은 성령을 통해 그리스도의 몸의 성숙한 지체로 변화되는 것이라고 했습니다(에베소서 4:15). 그래서 우리의 모든 말과 행동은 덕을 세우고 남에게 유익이 되어야 가치가 있습니다(29절). 예수님 안에서의 변화는 무엇보다 날마다 친절하고 함께 아파하고 용서할 때 일어날 수 있습니다(32절).

성령님이 다른 신자들과 함께 만나게 하실 때 우리는 서로에게서 배우면서 자라가고 성숙해질 수 있습니다.

BUILDING UP GOODWILL

When we think of best business practices, what first comes to mind probably aren’t qualities like kindness and generosity. But according to entrepreneur James Rhee, they should. In Rhee’s experience as CEO at a company on the brink of financial ruin, prioritizing what he calls “goodwill”—a “culture of kindness” and a spirit of giving—saved the company and led to its flourishing. Putting these qualities central gave people the hope and motivation they needed to unify, innovate, and problem-solve. Rhee explains that “goodwill . . . is a real asset that can compound and be amplified.”

In daily life too, it’s easy to think of qualities like kindness as vague and intangible, afterthoughts to our other priorities. But, as the apostle Paul taught, such qualities matter most of all.

Writing to new believers, Paul emphasized that the purpose of believers’ lives is transformation through the Spirit into mature members of the body of Christ (EPHESIANS 4:15). To that end, every word and every action has value only if it builds up and benefits others (V. 29). Transformation in Jesus can only happen through daily prioritizing kindness, compassion, and forgiveness (V. 32).

When the Holy Spirit draws us to other believers in Christ, we grow and mature as we learn from one another.

모두를 품으시는 하나님 마음

아홉 살 난 댄 길은 가장 친한 친구 아치와 함께 같은 반 친구의 생일 파티에 갔습니다. 그러나 생일을 맞은 친구의 어머니는 아치를 보고 들어오지 못하게 하면서, “의자가 모자라”라고 하며 안 된다고 했습니다. 댄은 같이 온 흑인 친구 아치를 앉히고 자기는 바닥에 앉겠다고 했지만 그 어머니는 계속 거절했습니다. 낙심한 댄은 둘이 가져온 선물을 친구 어머니에게 주고 아치와 함께 집으로 돌아왔습니다. 댄의 가슴에는 친구가 문전박대 당한 것이 아픈 상처로 남았습니다.

수십 년이 지난 지금 선생님이 된 댄은 그의 교실에 늘 빈 의자 하나를 둡니다. 학생들이 이유를 물으면, “교실에 언제나 누구든 와서 앉을 수 있는 자리”를 잊지 않고 준비하는 것이라고 말해줍니다.

모든 사람을 품는 마음은 우리를 맞아 주시는 예수님의 삶에서 엿볼 수 있습니다. “수고하고 무거운 짐 진 자들아 다 내게로 오라 내가 너희를 쉬게 하리라”(마태복음 11:28). 이 초대는 예수님이 “먼저는 유대인”을 사역의 대상으로 삼으셨던 것과 모순되어 보일 수 있습니다(로마서 1:16). 그러나 구원의 선물은 예수님을 믿는 모든 사람을 위한 것입니다. 바울은 이렇게 기록했습니다. “예수 그리스도를 믿는 사람이면 누구나 차별 없이 하나님에게 의롭다는 인정을 받습니다”(로마서 3:22, 현대인의 성경).

예수님이 “나는 마음이 온유하고 겸손하니 나의 멍에를 메고 내게 배우라 그리하면 너희 마음이 쉼을 얻으리라”(마태복음 11:29)고 하시며 모든 사람을 초대하신 것이 너무 기쁩니다. 예수님은 주님의 평안을 찾는 모든 사람들에게 마음을 열어 놓고 기다리십니다.

GOD’S HEART FOR ALL

Nine-year-old Dan Gill arrived with his best friend Archie at their classmate’s birthday party. When the mother of the birthday boy saw Archie, however, she refused him entry. “There aren’t enough chairs,” she insisted. Dan offered to sit on the floor to make room for his friend, who was Black, but the mother said no. Dejected, Dan left their presents with her and returned home with Archie, the sting of his friend’s rejection searing his heart.

Now, decades later, Dan is a schoolteacher who keeps one empty chair in his classroom. When students ask why, he explains it’s his reminder to “always have room in the classroom for anyone.”

A heart for all people can be seen in Jesus’ welcoming life: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (MATTHEW 11:28). This invitation may seem to contradict the “first to the Jew” scope of Jesus’ ministry (ROMANS 1:16). But the gift of salvation is for all people who place their faith in Jesus. “This is true for everyone who believes,” Paul wrote, “no matter who we are” (3:22 NLT).

We rejoice then at Christ’s invitation to all: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (MATTHEW 11:29). For all seeking His rest, His open heart awaits.

하나님을 신뢰하기

나는 두 종류의 약이 급하게 필요했습니다. 엄마의 알레르기 약과 조카의 습진에 필요한 약이었습니다. 엄마와 조카의 상태는 더 나빠지고 있었지만 약국에서는 더 이상 약을 구할 수가 없었습니다. 간절함과 절망감 속에서 나는 계속 기도했습니다. ‘주님, 제발 엄마와 조카를 도와주세요.’

몇 주가 지나자 엄마와 조카의 상태가 호전되었습니다. 하나님이 이렇게 말씀하시는 것 같았습니다. “치료하기 위해 내가 약을 쓸 때도 있지만 최종적인 치유는 약이 하는 것이 아니라 내가 하는 것이다. 그러니 약을 의지하지 말고 나를 의지하거라.”

시편 20편에서 다윗 왕은 하나님의 신실하심에 위안을 얻었습니다. 이스라엘 백성들의 군대는 강력했지만 그들의 가장 강력한 힘은 “여호와의 이름”(7절)으로 말미암는다는 사실을 그들도 알고 있었습니다(7절). 그들은 하나님의 이름, 곧 그분이 누구라는 것과 그분의 변함없는 성품과 확실한 약속을 신뢰했습니다. 그들은 모든 상황을 능력으로 주관하시는 하나님이 그들의 기도를 들으시고 적들로부터 그들을 구원하실 거라는 진리를 붙들었습니다(6절).

하나님이 우리를 도우실 때 이 세상의 자원을 사용하실 수도 있지만, 궁극적으로 모든 문제에 대한 승리는 하나님에게서 나옵니다. 문제를 해결해 주시든 견딜 수 있는 은혜를 주시든, 우리에게 하나님은 자신이 누구라고 말씀하신 그대로의 분이라는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다. 그래서 우리는 우리의 문제에 압도당하지 않고, 하나님께서 주시는 희망과 평안 속에서 문제에 직면할 수 있습니다.

TRUSTING GOD

I needed two medications urgently. One was for my mom’s allergies and the other for my niece’s eczema. Their discomfort was worsening, but the medicines were no longer available in pharmacies. Desperate and helpless, I prayed repeatedly, Lord, please help them.

Weeks later, their conditions became manageable. God seemed to be saying: “There are times when I use medicines to heal. But medicines don’t have the final say; I do. Don’t place your trust in them, but in Me.”

In Psalm 20, King David took comfort in God’s trustworthiness. The Israelites had a powerful army, but they knew that their biggest strength came from “the name of the Lord” (V. 7). They placed their trust in God’s name—in who He is, His unchanging character, and unfailing promises. They held on to the truth that He who is sovereign and powerful over all situations would hear their prayers and deliver them from their enemies (V. 6).

While God may use the resources of this world to help us, ultimately, victory over our problems comes from Him. Whether He gives us a resolution or the grace to endure, we can trust that He’ll be to us all that He says He is. We don’t have to be overwhelmed by our troubles, but we can face them with His hope and peace.

속삭이는 소리일 뿐

뉴욕시의 그랜드 센트럴 역에 있는 ‘속삭이는 벽’은 그 지역의 소음으로부터 벗어나게 해주는 음향 오아시스입니다. 이 독특한 장소에서는 사람들이 30피트(약 9미터) 떨어진 곳에서도 조용하게 대화를 주고받을 수 있습니다. 한 사람이 아치형의 화강암 길 바닥에 서서 벽에 대고 부드럽게 말하면 음파가 굽은 돌 위로 이동하여 반대편 사람에게 전달됩니다.

욥은 그의 삶이 온통 소음과 거의 모든 것을 잃는 비극으로 점철될 때 한 속삭이는 메시지를 들었습니다(욥기 1:13-19; 2:7). 친구들은 각기 그들의 생각을 마구 쏟아붓고, 욥의 생각도 끝없이 허물어져 가면서 그의 삶 전반에 문제가 몰려왔습니다. 그러나 장엄한 자연은 여전히 그에게 하나님의 신성한 능력을 부드럽게 말해주었습니다.

JUST A WHISPER

The whispering wall in New York City’s Grand Central Station is an acoustic oasis from the clamor of the area. This unique spot allows people to communicate quiet messages from a distance of thirty feet. When one person stands at the base of a granite archway and speaks softly into the wall, soundwaves travel up and over the curved stone to the listener on the other side.

Job heard the whisper of a message when his life was filled with noise and the tragedy of losing nearly everything (JOB 1:13–19; 2:7). His friends blabbered their opinions, his own thoughts tumbled endlessly, and trouble had invaded every aspect of his existence. Still, the majesty of nature spoke softly to him about God’s divine power.

The splendor of the skies, the mystery of the earth suspended in space, and the stability of the horizon reminded Job that the world was in the palm of God’s hand (26:7–11). Even a churning sea and a rumbling atmosphere led him to say, “these are but the outer fringe of [God’s] works; how faint the whisper we hear of him!” (V. 14).

If the world’s wonders represent just a fragment of God’s capabilities, it’s clear that His power exceeds our ability to understand it. In times of brokenness, this gives us hope. God can do anything, including what He did for Job as He sustained him during suffering.

연민의 기술

14세기에 시에나의 캐서린은 이런 글을 썼습니다. “때때로 밤에 당신이 운다면 그건 가시가 발에 박혔기 때문이에요. 이 세상에는 그걸 뽑아낼 수 있는 사람들이 있는데, 그 기술은 [하나님]에게서 배운 것이지요.” 캐서린은 그 “기술”을 배우는데 온 삶을 바쳤고, 오늘날에도 고통받는 사람들에 대한 그의 놀라운 공감과 연민의 능력이 기억되고 있습니다.

THE SKILL OF COMPASSION

“A thorn has entered your foot—that is why you weep at times at night,” wrote Catherine of Sienna in the fourteenth century. She continued, “There are some in this world who can pull it out. The skill that takes they have learned from [God].” Catherine devoted her life to cultivating that “skill,” and is still remembered today for her remarkable capacity for empathy and compassion for others in their pain.

That image of pain as a deeply embedded thorn that requires tenderness and skill to remove lingers with me. It’s a vivid reminder of how complex and wounded we are, and of our need to dig deeper to develop true compassion for others and ourselves.

Or, as the apostle Paul describes it, it’s an image that reminds us that loving others like Jesus does requires more than good intentions and well-wishes—it requires being “devoted to one another” (ROMANS 12:10), “joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer” (V. 12). It requires being willing to not only “rejoice with those who rejoice” but to “mourn with those who mourn” (V. 15). It requires all of us.

In a broken world, none of us escape unwounded—hurt and scars are deeply embedded in each of us. But deeper still is the love we find in Christ; love tender enough to draw out those thorns with the balm of compassion, willing to embrace both friend and enemy (V. 14) to find healing together.

하나님을 위한 섬김

2022년 9월 영국의 엘리자베스 여왕이 서거하자 수천 명의 군인들이 장례 행렬에 배치되었습니다. 수많은 군중 속에서 병사들의 개별적인 역할은 거의 눈에 띄지 않았지만 많은 군인들은 그것을 가장 큰 명예로 여겼습니다. 한 병사는 그것이 “여왕 폐하를 위해 마지막 의무를 다할 수 있는 기회였다”고 말했습니다. 그 군인에게는 ‘무슨 일을’ 했느냐가 아니라 ‘누구를’ 위해 그 일을 했느냐가 더 중요한 업무였습니다.

성막 비품을 관리하도록 임명된 레위 사람들도 비슷한 목표를 가지고 있었습니다. 제사장들과는 달리 게르손, 고핫, 므라리 자손들은 가구, 등잔대, 휘장, 기둥, 천막 말뚝, 밧줄 등을 관리하는, 겉보기에 지극히 평범해 보이는 일을 맡았습니다(민수기 3:25-26, 28, 31, 36-37). 그러나 그들의 일은 하나님이 특별히 지정하신 것으로서 “성막의 일을 하는 것”(8절)으로 여겨졌으며, 후대를 위해 성경에도 기록되었습니다.

그 생각을 하면 얼마나 격려가 되는지 모릅니다! 지금 우리가 직장이나 가정, 또는 교회에서 하는 일들이 직함과 급여에 가치를 두는 이 세상에서는 별로 중요하게 여겨지지 않을지도 모릅니다. 그러나 하나님은 다르게 보십니다. 우리가 ‘하나님을’ 위해 일하고 섬긴다면, 곧 아무리 작은 일이라도 탁월함을 추구하면서 ‘하나님의’ 영광을 위해 그렇게 한다면, 우리의 일은 위대하신 하나님을 섬기는 것이므로 중요한 의미를 지니게 됩니다.

SERVING FOR GOD’S SAKE

When England’s Queen Elizabeth passed away in September 2022, thousands of soldiers were deployed to march in the funeral procession. Their individual roles must have been almost unnoticeable in the large crowd, but many saw it as the greatest honor. One soldier said it was “an opportunity to do our last duty for Her Majesty.” For him, it was not what he did, but whom he was doing it for that made it an important job.

The Levites assigned to take care of the tabernacle furnishings had a similar aim. Unlike the priests, the Gershonites, Kohathites, and Merarites were assigned seemingly mundane tasks: cleaning the furniture, lampstands, curtains, posts, tent pegs, and ropes (NUMBERS 3:25–26, 28, 31, 36–37). Yet their jobs were specifically assigned by God, constituted “doing the work of the tabernacle” (V. 8), and are recorded in the Bible for posterity.

What an encouraging thought! Today, what many of us do at work, at home, or in church may seem insignificant to a world that values titles and salaries. But God sees it differently. If we work and serve for His sake—seeking excellence and doing so for His honor, even in the smallest task—then our work is important because we’re serving our great God.

WHO AM I?

As a member of the leadership team for a local ministry, part of my job was to invite others to join us as group discussion leaders. My invitations described the time commitment required and outlined the ways leaders would need to engage with their small group participants, both in meetings and during regular phone calls. I was often reluctant to impose on other people, being aware of the sacrifice they’d be making to become a leader. And yet sometimes their reply would completely overwhelm me: “I’d be honored.” Instead of citing legitimate reasons to decline, they described their gratitude to God for all He’d done in their lives as their reason for being eager to give back.

When the time came to give resources toward building a temple for God, David had a similar response: “Who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this?” (1 CHRONICLES 29:14). David’s generosity was driven by gratitude for God’s involvement in his life and that of the people of Israel. His response speaks of his humility and his acknowledgment of His goodness toward “foreigners and strangers” (V. 15).

Our giving to God’s work—whether in time, talent, or treasure— reflects our gratitude to the One who gave to us to begin with. All that we have comes from His hand (V. 14); in response, we can give gratefully to Him.
