나눌 마음의 준비

나의 큰할아버지 추도식에 그분 내외가 오랫동안 실천해 온 나눔의 삶을 기념하여 구운 소고기와 옥수수와 콩으로 차린 식사가 준비되었습니다. 그분들은 매 주일 아침 교회에 가기 전 큰 고기덩어리와 채소를 슬로우 쿠커에 넣었습니다. 예배가 끝나면 점심에 초대할 사람을 찾았습니다. 친한 친구일 때도, 때로는 모르는 사람일 때도 있었습니다. 누구든 상관없이 집에 음식을 넉넉히 준비하고, 오후는 특별히 대접하는 날로 비워 두었습니다.

그분들의 이런 주일 습관은 기꺼이 나누려는 마음의 준비를 필요로 했습니다. 이스라엘 백성도 이처럼 살았습니다. 하나님은 모세를 통해 그들의 음식의 한 부분을 “가난한 사람과 거류민을 위하여”(레위기 19:10) 남겨두라고 하셨습니다. 추수할 때 밭 모퉁이까지 거두지 말고, 떨어진 이삭을 줍지 말며, 포도원의 열매를 다시 따지 말라고 하셨습니다(9-10절). 이런 구제의 방법으로 땅이 없는 사람들도 수고하여 먹을 것을 얻을 수가 있었습니다. 이것은 보기에 아름다운 선행입니다. 그런데 하나님의 백성에게 이것은 어쩌다 한번 하는 것이 아니고 해마다 늘 지키는 삶의 방식이었습니다.

우리 주변에서 남을 도우는 예수님의 사랑을 보여줄 기회들이 많습니다. 할 수 없는 경우도 있지만, 어떤 것은 미리 준비할 수 있습니다. 오늘 우리가 하나님의 도우심으로 어떻게 다른 사람을 친절히 대할 수 있을지 생각해 봅시다(33절).

READY TO BE GENEROUS

My great-uncle’s memorial service featured a meal of roast beef, corn, and beans to honor the hospitality that he and his wife had lived out for many years. Each Sunday morning, they would put a large roast and veggies in the Crock- Pot before going to church. After the service, they would look for someone to invite for lunch. Sometimes it was a good friend, sometimes a stranger. Either way, they made sure there was plenty of food at home and those afternoons were especially set aside for hospitality.


Their Sunday habit required an intentional readiness for generosity. The Israelites followed a similar pattern. Through Moses, God commanded them to leave a portion of their food “for the poor and the foreigner” (LEVITICUS 19:10). During harvest time, they were instructed not to reap to the edges of their field, leave what had fallen, and not re-harvest their vineyards (VV. 9-10). With these redeeming methods, those who didn’t own land could still work to gather food. For the people of God, this wasn’t a one-time, spontaneous act—although that can be a beautiful blessing too. It was how they lived year after year.

There are opportunities all around us to show Jesus’ hospitable love. Some we can’t prepare for; some we can. As God helps us, let’s consider how we can treat others kindly today (V. 33).

기도의 선물

아버지 날 카드를 사려고 무거운 발걸음으로 가게에 들어갔습니다. 나는 전에 아버지를 용서했습니다. 내가 열다섯 살에 집을 떠날 때까지, 그리고 이후에 받은 상처들을 기도로 풀어가며 여러 해 동안 화해하려 애써보았습니다. 그러나 “우리 아빠 최고”와 같은 감사 일색의 카드가 나에게는 수십 년이 지나도 공감이 되질 않았습니다. 그래서 하늘의 아버지를 높여드리는 마음으로 카드 진열대 앞에 서서 내 육신의 아버지를 위해 기도했습니다.

아담과 가인, 다윗과 압살롬, 그리고 나의 아버지와 나 사이에 이르기까지 죄는 대를 이어가며 갈등과 아픔을 만들어 왔습니다. 그러나 바울 사도는 자녀들에게 “주 안에서 너희 부모에게 순종하라 이것이 옳으니라”(에베소서 6:1)고 권면했습니다. 부모를 공경하라는 명령에는 약속과 상급이 따릅니다(2-3절). 또한 아버지들은 자녀가 하나님을 알고 사랑하도록 키워야 합니다(4절). 하나님의 백성은 “사람에게 하듯 하지 말고 주께 하듯” 서로를 기쁜 마음으로 섬기도록 창조되었습니다(7절). 그러나 죄가 이런 관계들을 파괴할 수 있습니다.

부모와의 관계가 어떠하든 우리는 하나님께서 우리에게 생명을 주기 위해 사용하신 분들에게 감사할 수 있습니다. 그리고 우리는 부모들도 예수 그리스도를 만나 변화된 인생을 살도록 기도할 수 있습니다. 예수님께로 인도 하는 기도는 사랑과 공경의 선물이며 관계와 삶을 변화시키는 길입니다.

THE GIFT OF PRAYER

I trudged into the grocery store to buy a Father’s Day card. I had forgiven my father. I’d tried reconciling over the years— prayerfully processing the hurts inflicted before and after I’d left home at fifteen. Sadly, decades later, I still couldn’t relate to the cards that had messages gushing with gratitude for the “greatest” dads. So, desperate to honor my heavenly Father, I stood in that card aisle and prayed for my earthly father.

From Adam and Cain to David and Absalom to my father and me, sin has caused multigenerational strife and heartbreak. Still, the apostle Paul encouraged children to obey their parents “in the Lord, for this is right” (EPHESIANS 6:1). Honoring parents is a command that comes with a promise and a reward (VV. 2-3). In turn, fathers were meant to raise children to know and love God (V. 4). God’s people are designed to serve each other “wholeheartedly, as if [we] were serving the Lord, not people” (V. 7). Unfortunately, sin can destroy these relationships.

No matter what our relationship status with our parents is, we can thank God for the people He chose to use when He gave us life, and we can pray they enjoy a life-transforming relationship with Christ. Prayer that leads to Jesus is a gift of love and honor that can lead to changed relationships and lives.

하나님으로부터 받다

나폴레온 힐은 1937년 그의 책 ‘생각하라 그리고 부자가 되라(Think and Grow Rich)’에서 이렇게 말했습니다. “마음에 품고 믿으면 무엇이든지 이룰 수 있다.” 힐의 이 말은 아메리칸 드림을 말해주는 명언입니다: 열심히 노력하면 가장 큰 꿈도 이룰 수 있다.


열심히 노력하면 세상에서 이익을 얻을 수 있습니다. 성경의 여러 구절들, 특히 잠언에서는 이 둘의 연관성을 자주 말합니다. 그러나 나는 나이가 들면서 힐의 생각대로 하면 위험도 따른다는 것을 깨닫게 됐습니다. 내 꿈을 이루려는 집착은 하나님으로부터 독립하여 살아가려는 자기 중심적인 노력이 될 수 있기 때문입니다.

이 세상에는 우리가 원하는 것을 양손으로 움켜잡으라고 재촉하는 많은 목소리들이 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 진정으로 원하는 삶은 우리가 노력해서 얻는 삶이 아니라 성령님께 맡김으로써 거저 받는 삶입니다. 우리 뜻대로 축복을 붙잡으려 필사적으로 애쓰는 것이 아니라 하나님께 순종하며 그분과 자유롭게 동행하는 것입니다.

RECEIVING FROM GOD

In his 1937 book Think and Grow Rich, author Napoleon Hill said, “Whatever your mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” Hill’s quote epitomizes the American Dream: If you work hard, you can achieve your wildest dreams.

Hard work may lead to earthly benefits; many passages of Scripture—especially in Proverbs—link those things. But as I grow older, I also see a real danger in following Hill’s ideas: My grasping attempts to achieve my dreams can be a self-focused attempt to live independently from God.

In Galatians 5, Paul contrasts two ways of life: “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (V. 16). Eugene Petersen paraphrases it this way: “Live freely, animated and motivated by God’s Spirit. Then you won’t feed the compulsions of selfishness” (The Message). A few verses later, Paul describes what a flourishing life in Christ looks like: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (VV. 22-23).

Many voices in this world compel us to grasp our desires with both hands. The life we long for, though, is not one we earn but one we receive as we yield to the Holy Spirit—freely walking with Him—rather than striving desperately to grasp blessing on our own terms.

THE PATH OF LIFE

He was born a slave in the 1860s. A sickly baby, he was sold to a slave owner for the cost of a horse. As a teenager, he witnessed the killing of a black man by a group of white people. Remarkably, George excelled in school, but when he applied to Highland University in Kansas, he was denied admission because of his skin color. Yet through it all, the young man maintained a deep faith in God. George Washington Carver’s life verse was Proverbs 3:6: “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

We sometimes feel overwhelmed by our circumstances. We experience setbacks. We find ourselves at a loss for where we should go. But Proverbs encourages us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (V. 5). This is the Bible’s way of saying, “Let go and let God” lead your life.

George Washington Carver followed God’s path, persevering against all odds, teaching himself botany and geology and eventually becoming a renowned scientist. He famously developed hundreds of uses for the peanut plant but also developed methods of crop rotation that revolutionized agriculture in the United States. God has a way of making the best out of bad situations. Whatever you’re facing today, the key is to “acknowledge Him” and listen for His voice. Watch Him open up the paths of your life.

피난처 되시는 하나님

야외 콘서트가 시작되었는데 내 볼에 빗방울 하나가 떨어졌습니다. 고개를 들어 보니 심상치 않은 먹구름이 몰려오고 있었습니다. 하지만 비싸게 주고 산 티켓이 아까워 조금 나쁜 날씨 때문에 자리를 뜨고 싶지가 않았습니다. 그러자 사람들이 우산을 펴기 시작했습니다. 어떤 여자는 비닐봉지를 머리에 뒤집어썼습니다. 그리고 천둥 소리가 한번 요란하게 울리자 가수가 마이크를 잡고 모두들 어디든 가서 비를 피하라고 했습니다.

곧 폭우가 쏟아졌고, 우리는 흙탕물을 튀기며 근처 학교 체육관으로 급히 피했습니다. 온몸이 흠뻑 젖은 채 우리는 모르는 사람들과 함께 삼십 분 동안 웅크리고 앉아 폭우가 끝나기를 기다렸습니다. 다시 밖으로 나왔을 때는 밴드가 이미 장비를 접고 떠나려 하고 있었습니다.

삶의 폭풍이 몰려올 때, 우리는 어디로 달려가야 할까요? 슬픔, 걱정, 질병, 혼란 같은 상황 앞에서 우리는 두렵고 피난처가 필요합니다. 우리를 지켜줄 만한 든든한 보호처가 필요합니다. 시편 91편은 하나님께서 우리를 환난 가운데서 구원하시고 함께 하시겠다고 약속하신 것을 상기시켜 줍니다. “그가 나를 사랑한즉 내가 그를 건지리라 그가 내 이름을 안즉 내가 그를 높이리라”(14절). 우리에게 도움이 필요할 때 하나님의 이름을 부르면 그분은 우리에게 “응답하리라”(15절)고 말씀하십니다.

우리의 용기로는 되지 않을 때 우리는 하나님의 능력에 기댈 수 있습니다. 그분은 어떤 폭풍 속에서도 우리의 피난처가 되십니다.

TAKING REFUGE IN GOD

As the outdoor concert started, I felt a single raindrop on my cheek. Looking up, I saw ominous dark clouds. Having paid a steep price for tickets, however, I wasn’t inclined to leave because of a little bad weather. Then umbrellas began to pop open. One woman pulled a plastic grocery bag over her hair. It took just one deafening boom of thunder for the performer to grab her microphone and beg us to take refuge somewhere.

As the rain began to come in torrents, we splashed through muddy puddles and rushed into a nearby school gym. Thoroughly soaked, we huddled with strangers for the next half hour, still hoping the storm would end. When we ventured back out, we saw that the band was packed up and ready to leave.

When the storms of life come, where can we run? Sorrow, worry, illness, and confusion can make us fearful and in need of refuge. We need a strong shelter that’ll protect us. Psalm 91 reminds us that God has promised to rescue us and to be with us in trouble. “Because he loves me . . . I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name” (V. 14). When we need help, we can call on His name and He “will answer” us (V. 15).

When our courage fails us, we can lean into His strength. He’s our shelter in any storm.

이런 친구들

“내가 너보다 널 더 잘 알아!” 젊은 시절 한 친구가 나에게 이런 말을 자신있게 했습니다. 좋은 뜻으로 한 말이었지만, 사실 나는 어렸을 때 선교사에게 입양되어 네 개의 대륙과 문화 속에서 복잡한 삶을 살아왔습니다. 그런 나를 친구가 다 알 수는 없는 것이었습니다.

욥의 친구 소발이 욥의 고난에 대해 설명했던 말은 사뭇 지혜롭게 들렸습니다. 그는 “네가 하나님의 오묘함을 어찌 능히 측량하겠느냐”(욥기 11:7)고 욥에게 묻고나서 “그것이 하늘보다 높다”(8절, 현대인의 성경)고 말합니다. 누가 이 말에 반박할 수 있을까요? 그러나 소발은 자신도 모르는 것, 곧 욥의 마음에 대해 단정 지으며 아무런 근거도 없이 이렇게 말했습니다. “네 손에 죄악이 있거든 멀리 버리라 불의가 네 장막에 있지 못하게 하라... 그리하면 굳게 서서 두려움이 없으리니”(14-15절).

이에 대해 욥은 냉소적으로 대답했습니다. “너희가 죽으면 지혜도 죽겠구나 나도 너희 같이 생각이 있어 너희만 못하지 아니하고 그같은 일을 누가 알지 못하겠느냐?”(12:2-3) 욥이 처한 현실은 너무나 복잡해서 욥 자신도 지금 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 알 수가 없었습니다(욥기 1-2장 참조). 그러나 욥은 “하나님께 지혜와 권능이 있다”(12:13)고 바르게 말했습니다. 이 말은 소발에게서 나온 것이 아니었습니다. 소발은 자기에게 없는 권위와 통찰력을 자기 것으로 착각했던 것입니다.

우리의 친구들에게는 때때로 우리의 따뜻한 조언이 필요합니다. 그러나 우리는 대체로 곤경에 처한 친구들을 위해 그들을 가장 잘 아시는 하나님께 그들의 이름을 올려드리며 기도해야 합니다.

WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE . . .

“I know you better than you know yourself!” As a young man, I heard that confident declaration from a friend. Her intentions were good, but my complicated life as an adopted missionary kid had been shaped across four continents and cultures. She didn’t really know me.

Zophar, a friend of Job’s, sounded wise in his assessment of Job’s difficulties. “Can you fathom the mysteries of God?” Zophar asked him (JOB 11:7). “They are higher than the heavens above” (V. 8). Who can argue with that? But then Zophar dared speak of something he couldn’t know: Job’s heart. Without evidence, he proclaimed, “If you put away the sin that is in your hand and allow no evil to dwell in your tent, then . . . you will stand firm and without fear” (VV. 14-15).

Job responded sarcastically: “Wisdom will die with you! But I have a mind as well as you; I am not inferior to you. Who does not know all these things?” (12:2-3). Job’s reality was so complex that even he didn’t know what was taking place (SEE JOB 1-2). He correctly said, “To God belong wisdom and power” (12:13). It didn’t come from Zophar, who presumed to have authority and insight that weren’t his.

Our friends may need our loving counsel from time to time. But usually friends in crisis need us to bring their names in prayer to the one who truly does know them.

거룩한 길

치매 초기 진단을 받은 제니퍼는 성경을 잘 읽을 수가 없어 읽어주는 성경을 듣기 시작했습니다. 그런 제니퍼에게 성경 구절은 이제 새로운 의미로 다가옵니다. 예를 들어 그녀는 자주 길을 잃고, 때때로 사람들을 알아보지 못하고, 들짐승의 환상을 보기도 합니다. 이렇게 혼돈이 생기고 두려울 때에는 이사야가 말한 “거룩한 길” 곧 “그 길을 행하는 자들을 위하여 예비된 길”(이사야 35:8)을 들으면서 하나님의 위로를 받습니다. 그 길에는 악하고 어리석은 자도 없고, “사나운 짐승도 없을 것”이며, 오직 “구속함을 받은 자들” 곧 하나님께서 구원하신 자들만 그 길을 걷게 될 것입니다(9절).

선지자 이사야는 고향을 떠나 붙잡혀 온 하나님의 백성들에게 하나님의 약속을 전했습니다. 하나님의 임재를 경험하던 성전에서 멀리 떨어져 있는 그들은 분명 모든 것을 잃고 버려진 느낌이었을 것입니다. 그런 상황에서 “거룩한 길”, 곧 하나님께로 향하는 길에 대한 약속은 그들에게 소망과 힘이 되었을 것입니다. 두려움도 근심도 없이 “노래하며 시온에 이르는” 것을 생각하는 그들은 기뻐했을 것입니다(10절).

제니퍼가 그 옛날의 약속을 붙드는 것처럼, 예수님을 믿는 우리도 주님과 동행할 때 기쁨과 즐거움을 누립니다(10절). 우리의 삶이 아무리 힘들고 인생이 뒤바뀌는 시련을 당한다 해도, 우리는 하나님의 길이 그분이 계신 본향으로 우리를 인도한다는 것을 압니다.

THE WAY OF HOLINESS

After Jennifer was diagnosed with early onset dementia, she couldn’t read the Bible easily, so she started listening to it. Scripture passages now mean something new to her. For example, she gets lost easily, often doesn’t know who people are, and sees hallucinations of wild animals. When she’s disoriented and fearful, she receives God’s comfort as she hears Isaiah speak of “the Way of Holiness” set aside “for those who walk on that Way” (ISAIAH 35:8). On that road will be no wicked fools, “nor any ravenous beast”; instead, “only the redeemed will walk there,” those whom God rescues (V. 9).

The prophet Isaiah shared God’s promises to His people, those exiled from their home. Away from the temple, where they would experience His presence, they must have felt bereft and forlorn. The promises, therefore, of the Way of Holiness, the path to God, would give them hope and strength. To think of entering “Zion with singing,” without fear or sorrow, would lead them to rejoice (V. 10).

Even as Jennifer holds on to these assurances from centuries ago, so too can we who believe in Jesus trust that as we journey with Him, we’ll know gladness and joy (V. 10). Whatever trials we face in this life—however taxing or life-altering—we know that God’s way leads us home to Him.

하나님께 받은 은혜로 드림

나는 스탠리가 사람들에게 베푸는 것을 보며 늘 놀랐습니다. 그는 교회의 노인들이나 동네 청소부들, 혹은 격려가 필요한 사람들에게 음식을 사주고 선물을 나누곤 했습니다.

놀라운 것은 스탠리가 부자도 아니고 투자에 능한 사람도 아닌데 그의 작은 투자가 놀라울 만큼 성공적이어서 그가 베품을 계속할 수 있었다는 점입니다. 누구든지 그에게 고맙다고 하면 그는 손으로 하늘을 가리키며 미소를 지었습니다. 그 모습은 마치 “이건 제가 아니라 하나님께서 주신 것이예요.”하는 말처럼 들렸습니다. 그는 다른 사람들을 도와주라고 하나님이 자기를 도우신다고 자주 말했습니다.

이것은 바울이 고린도후서 9장에서 말한 나눔의 모습입니다. 그는 고린도 교인들이 다른 성도들을 돕기 위해 준비하는 모습을 자랑스럽게 여기며(2절), 그들이 시작한 연보를 마무리하기 원했습니다(3절). 그러면서 바울은 성도들에게 기쁜 마음으로 풍성히 나누기를 권면하며, 하나님은 주는 자를 갚아 주실 뿐 아니라(6-7절) 사람들에게 더 많이 주셔서 더 많이 나누도록 축복하신다고 했습니다(8절).

GIVING FROM GOD’S GIFTS

Stanley’s generosity never ceased to amaze me. He often bought meals and gifts for elderly church members, cleaners in his neighborhood, or anyone who needed cheering up. Equally amazing was that even though Stanley wasn’t wealthy or savvy at investing, his small investment did impressively well, enabling him to keep giving. Whenever someone thanked him, he’d point upwards and smile, as if to say, “It came from God, not me.” God, he often said, helped him to help others.

This was what Paul alluded to in 2 Corinthians 9 as he wrote about giving. Proud of the Corinthians’ readiness to help fellow believers (V. 2), he hoped to pick up a collection they had started (V. 3). Imploring them to give generously and cheerfully, he noted that God would not only reward those who gave (VV. 6-7) but also bless people so they could give even more (V. 8).

God doesn’t expect us to give what we’re unable to give (2 CORINTHIANS 8:12). Rather, He entrusts us with money, time, or talent to “abound in every good work” (9:8), and He supplies what we need so we “can be generous on every occasion” (V. 11). That’s why we can give in faith and with a cheerful heart (V. 7), knowing that we give only from what we’ve been given. In the process, we bring praise to God’s name (V. 13).

미시간주 첼시의 명소인 세렌디피티 서점에 확장이 필요했습니다. 주인은 바로 한 블록 떨어진 곳에 두 배 크기의 건물을 계약했습니다. 그녀는 책을 모두 상자에 담느라 며칠 동안 서점 문을 닫는 등 많은 시간을 보내지 않고, 빠르게 이전하고 싶었습니다. 그래서 주변 사람들에게 도움을 청했습니다. 무려 300명이 넘는 사람들이 왔습니다! 그들은 나란히 서서 인간 띠를 만들어 옆 사람에게 책을 계속 전달하는 방법으로 2시간도 안 되어 9,100권의 책을 옮겼습니다. 서점 주인은 “[이 서점은] 정말로 이 지역 사회의 일부이고, 주민들 모두가 자기들 서점이라고 생각해요.”라고 말했습니다. 그들은 모두 기쁘게, 함께 열심히 일했습니다.

SERVING SIDE BY SIDE

Serendipity Bookstore, a popular spot in Chelsea, Michigan, needed to expand. The owner found a building twice the size just a block away. She wanted to make the move quickly instead of closing the store for days and boxing up all the books. So she requested help from the community. More than three hundred people showed up! They stood shoulder to shoulder, forming a human conveyor belt, and passed the books from one person to the next, moving 9,100 books in just under two hours. The owner said, “[The bookstore] is really a part of the community, and [the people] have ownership.” They all enthusiastically worked side by side.

When Nehemiah, a Jew who was the trusted cupbearer to the Persian king, learned that the wall surrounding Jerusalem lay in shambles, he cried out for God’s guidance (NEHEMIAH 1:3-11). The Babylonians had destroyed the walls in 587 bc. After investigating, Nehemiah recruited help from the community. He said to the Jewish leaders, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins . . . . Come, let us rebuild the wall” (2:17). Chapter 3 describes how leaders and citizens alike willingly repaired the section of the wall that was right in front of each one. They worked side by side.

We too can impact our community by serving together under God’s direction and in His strength.

하나님 능력에 힘입어

텅스텐은 상반되는 속성을 지닌 물질입니다. 어떤 순수 원소보다도 인장 강도가 높아서 잡아당겨 끊기가 매우 어렵지만, 미드 메탈 웹사이트에 의하면 “텅스텐은 충격 강도가 낮아서 충격을 받으면 부서지는 성질을 지닌 약한 금속입니다.” 가장 강한 천연 금속인 텅스텐이 또한 이렇게 약하고 부서지기 쉽다는 사실이 매우 흥미롭습니다.

인간에게도 이와 비슷한 점이 있습니다. 우리는 신체적으로 정신적으로 엄청난 힘을 발휘할 수 있지만, 타락하고 망가진 이 세상의 무게에 쉽게 무너지기도 합니다. 바울은 이를 직접 체험했습니다. 고린도후서 11장에서 그는 자신을 누르는 경험들을 설명합니다(23-29절). 그러나 하나님은 그에게 “내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라”고 격려하셨습니다. 바울은 “그러므로 도리어 크게 기뻐함으로 나의 여러 약한 것들에 대하여 자랑하리니 이는 그리스도의 능력이 내게 머물게 하려 함이라” (고린도후서 12:9)고 다짐합니다.

DEPENDENT ON GOD’S STRENGTH

Tungsten is something of a paradox. It has the highest tensile strength of any pure element, making it extremely difficult to pull apart. But the Mead Metals website notes, “In terms of impact strength, tungsten is weak—it’s a brittle metal known to shatter on impact.” It’s fascinating that tungsten, the strongest natural metal, is also so weak and brittle.

Human beings display a similar characteristic. Though capable of great strength both physically and mentally, we’re easily crushed under the weight of this fallen, broken world. Paul experienced this personally. In 2 Corinthians 11, he described experiences that overwhelmed him (VV. 23-29). But God encouraged him: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul resolved, “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9).

Earlier in 2 Corinthians, Paul had written, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed” (4:8). There’s hope, even though the strongest child of God knows all too well that this world is simply too much for us. We’re happily dependent on the strength of His grace if we are to endure. May we, like Paul, embrace our weaknesses so God’s power can carry us through.
