흉터를 보며 배움

식도암을 제거하기 위해 또 다른 수술을 받았던 페이는 자기 배에 남은 수술 자국을 만져 보았습니다. 의사들이 위 일부를 떼어냈는데 그 수술의 심각성을 알려주는 큰 흉터가 남아 있었습니다. 페이가 남편에게 말했습니다. “이 수술 자국은 암의 고통을 말해주기도 하지만 치유의 시작을 말해주기도 해요. 나는 치유의 상징으로 생각하기로 했어요.”

하나님과 밤새 씨름한 야곱도 이와 비슷한 선택을 해야 했습니다. 하나님의 사람이 야곱의 허벅다리 관절을 비틀어 어긋나게 하자 힘을 잃은 야곱은 심하게 다리를 절었습니다. 여러 달 후에 그는 아픈 허벅다리를 주무르며 무슨 생각을 했을까요?

속이며 살아온 과거 때문에 씨름을 피할 수 없게 된 자신을 크게 후회했을까요? 하나님의 사자는 야곱이 자신이 진정 어떤 사람인지 시인하기 전까지 축복을 거절하면서 그와 씨름하며 그의 진실을 드러냈습니다. 그는 자기 이름이 야곱, 곧 “발꿈치를 잡은 자”(창세기 25:26 참조)라고 고백했습니다. 그는 이득을 취하려고 형 에서와 장인 라반을 잔꾀로 속였습니다. 하나님의 사자는 그가 “하나님과 및 사람들과 겨루어 이겼다”(32:28) 하여 야곱에게 이스라엘이라는 새 이름을 주었습니다.

야곱의 절뚝거림은 예전의 속이던 삶은 죽고 이제 하나님과 함께하는 새로운 삶이 시작된 것을 의미했습니다. 야곱의 끝이요, 이스라엘의 시작이었습니다. 그는 이제 그 절뚝거림 때문에 그의 안에서, 또 그를 통해 강하게 역사하시는 하나님을 의지하게 되었습니다.

LEARNING FROM SCARS

Faye touched the scars on her abdomen. She had endured another surgery to remove esophageal-stomach cancer. This time doctors had taken part of her stomach and left a jagged scar that revealed the extent of their work. She told her husband, “Scars represent either the pain of cancer or the start of healing. I choose my scars to be symbols of healing.”

Jacob faced a similar choice after his all-night wrestling match with God. The divine assailant wrenched Jacob’s hip out of socket, so that Jacob was left exhausted and with a noticeable limp. Months later, when Jacob massaged his tender hip, I wonder what he reflected on?

Was he filled with regret for his years of deceit that forced this fateful match? The divine messenger had wrestled the truth out of him, refusing to bless him until Jacob owned up to who he was. He confessed he was Jacob, the “heel grabber” (SEE GENESIS 25:26). He’d played tricks on his brother Esau and father-in-law Laban, tripping them to gain advantage. The divine wrestler said Jacob’s new name would be “Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome” (32:28).

Jacob’s limp represented the death of his old life of deceit and the beginning of his new life with God. The end of Jacob and the start of Israel. His limp led him to lean on God, who now moved powerfully in and through him.

곁에 계시는 나의 하나님

마닐라에서 30년이 넘게 학생들을 대면하여 성악을 가르쳐 온 로데스는 온라인으로 수업을 진행하라는 요청을 받고 걱정이 되었습니다. 그녀는 “저는 컴퓨터를 잘 못해요. 노트북도 오래됐고 화상으로 만나는 형식에 많이 서툴러요.”라고 말했습니다.

누군가에게는 큰 일이 아닐 수 있겠지만 로데스에게는 엄청난 스트레스 였습니다. “저는 혼자 살기 때문에 도와줄 사람이 없어요. 수입이 있어야 하는데 학생들이 그만둘까 걱정이네요.”라고 말했습니다.

로데스는 수업하기 전 매번 노트북이 제대로 작동하게 해달라고 기도했습니다. “빌립보서 4:5-6 말씀이 제 컴퓨터 배경화면이었어요. 그 구절에 얼마나 매달렸는지 몰라요.”라고 그녀는 말했습니다.

MY GOD IS NEAR

For more than thirty years, Lourdes, a voice teacher in Manila, had taught students face to face. When she was asked to conduct classes online, she was anxious. “I’m not good with computers,” she recounted. “My laptop is old, and I’m not familiar with video conferencing platforms.”

While it may seem a small thing to some, it was a real stressor for her. “I live alone, so there is no one to help,” she said. “I’m concerned that my students will quit, and I need the income.”

Before each class, Lourdes would pray for her laptop to work properly. “Philippians 4:5–6 was the wallpaper on my screen,” she said. “How I clung to those words.”

Paul exhorts us to not be anxious about anything, because “the Lord is near” (PHILIPPIANS 4:5). God’s promise of His presence is ours to hold on to. As we rest in His nearness and commit everything to Him in prayer—both big and small—His peace guards our “hearts and . . . minds in Christ Jesus” (V. 7).

“God led me to websites about fixing computer glitches,” Lourdes said. “He also gave me patient students who understood my technological limitations.” God’s presence, help, and peace are ours to enjoy as we seek to follow Him all the days of our life. We can say with confidence: “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (V. 4).

크리스마스의 고민

해외 사역으로 부르심을 받고 떠났던 데이빗과 앤지는 선교사업의 많은 열매들을 보면서 그 소명을 더욱 확고하게 느꼈습니다. 그러나 한 가지 마음쓰이는 일이 있었습니다. 이제 데이빗의 연로하신 부모님이 크리스마스를 홀로 지내게 된 것입니다.

데이빗과 앤지는 선물을 일찍 보내드리고 크리스마스 아침에 전화를 하여, 외롭게 크리스마스를 지내시는 부모님을 위로해 드렸습니다. 그러나 부모님이 진정 원하는 것은 ‘아들 내외’였습니다. 데이빗의 수입으로는 자주 방문할 수 없는 상황인데 달리 무슨 방법이 있을까요? 데이빗에게는 지혜가 필요했습니다.

잠언 3장은 지혜를 구하는 삶에 대한 특별 강좌라고 할 수 있습니다. 우리의 상황을 하나님께 아뢰어 지혜를 얻는 방법을 보여주고(5-6절), 사랑과 신뢰 등, 지혜의 여러 가지 특성과(3-4, 7-12절), 평화와 장수 같은 지혜의 유익을 설명합니다(13-18절). 그리고 덧붙여서 감동적인 어조로 하나님께서 우리와 친히 “교통하심”(32절)으로 그런 지혜를 주신다고 설명합니다. 하나님은 그분을 가까이 하는 사람들에게 그분의 해결책을 조용히 일러주십니다.

데이빗이 어느 날 밤 자신의 고민을 놓고 기도하던 중 한 가지 방법이 떠올랐습니다. 다음 크리스마스에 데이빗과 앤지는 가장 좋은 옷을 입고, 식탁을 반짝이게 장식하고, 오븐에서 구운 요리를 준비했습니다. 데이빗의 부모님도 똑같이 준비했습니다. 그러고는 각자의 식탁에 노트북 컴퓨터를 켜 놓고 화상으로 연결한 후 식사를 함께 했습니다. 그들은 마치 한 방에 있는 것처럼 느꼈습니다. 그 이후로 이 행사는 그 가정의 전통이 되었습니다.

CHRISTMAS DILEMMA

David and Angie had felt called to move overseas, and the fruitful ministry that followed seemed to confirm it. But there was one downside to their move. David’s elderly parents would now spend Christmases alone.

David and Angie tried to mitigate his parents’ Christmas Day loneliness by posting gifts early and calling on Christmas morning. But what his parents really wanted was them. With David’s income only permitting an occasional trip home, what else could they do? David needed wisdom.

Proverbs 3 is a crash course in wisdom-seeking, showing us how to receive it by taking our situations to God (VV. 5–6), describing its various qualities such as love and faithfulness (VV. 3–4, 7–12), and its benefits as peace and longevity (VV. 13–18). In a touching note, it adds that God gives such wisdom by taking us “into his confidence” (V. 32). He whispers His solutions to those who are close to Him.

Praying about his problem one night, David had an idea. Next Christmas Day, he and Angie put on their best clothes, decorated the table with tinsel, and brought in the roast dinner. David’s parents did the same. Then, placing a laptop on each table, they ate together via video link. It almost felt like they were in the same room. It’s become a family tradition ever since.

God took David into His confidence and gave him wisdom. He loves to whisper creative solutions to our problems.

그리스도 안의 공동체

바하마 남부에 래기드라는 작은 섬이 하나 있습니다. 19세기에는 이곳에서 소금 생산이 활발했지만, 그 산업이 쇠퇴하며 많은 사람이 근처 다른 섬들로 떠났습니다. 2016년에는 80명도 안 되는 사람들이 남았는데, 그들은 종파가 세 가지로 서로 달랐지만 모두가 매주 한 곳에 모여 예배하고 친교를 나누었습니다. 숫자가 아주 적었기 때문에 그들에게 공동체 의식은 매우 중요했습니다.

초대교회의 성도들에게도 공동체에 대한 절실한 필요와 열망이 있었습니다. 그들은 예수님의 죽음과 부활을 통해 얻은 새로운 믿음으로 기대에 차 있었습니다. 그러나 이제 예수님과 육신으로 함께 하지 못하게 된 그들에게는 서로가 필요하다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 그들은 사도들의 가르침을 받고 서로 교제하며 함께 성찬을 나누는 일에 힘썼습니다(사도행전 2:42). 예배하고 음식을 함께 나누기 위해 처소에 모였고, 다른 이들의 필요를 돌보았습니다. 당시 교회를 설명하며 “믿는 무리가 한 마음과 한 뜻이 되었다”(4:32)고 했습니다. 그들은 성령으로 충만하여 늘 하나님을 찬양하며 주님께 기도를 통해 교회의 필요를 간구했습니다.

COMMUNITY IN CHRIST

In the southern Bahamas lies a small piece of land called Ragged Island. In the nineteenth century, it had an active salt industry, but because of a decline in that industry, many people emigrated to nearby islands. In 2016, when fewer than eighty people lived there, the island featured three religious denominations, yet the people all gathered together in one place for worship and fellowship each week. With so few residents, a sense of community was especially vital for them.

The people of the early church felt a crucial need and desire for community as well. They were excited about their newfound faith that was made possible by Jesus’ death and resurrection. But they also knew He was no longer physically with them, so they knew they needed each other. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teachings, to fellowship, and to sharing Communion together (ACTS 2:42). They gathered in homes for worship and meals and cared for others’ needs. The church is described in this way: “All the believers were one in heart and mind” (4:32). Filled with the Holy Spirit, they praised God continually and brought the church’s needs to Him in prayer.

Community is essential for our growth and support. Don’t try to go it alone. God will develop that sense of community as you share your struggles and joys with others and draw near to Him together.

하나님 앞에서 평등함

휴가 중에 아내와 나는 이른 아침에 자전거를 타며 즐거운 시간을 보냈습니다. 자전거를 타고 가다가 수백만 달러의 집들이 있는 동네를 지나게 되었습니다. 개를 데리고 산책하는 주민들, 우리처럼 자전거를 타는 사람들, 새 집을 짓는 현장에서 일하는 노동자들, 또 조경을 예쁘게 관리하는 정원사들 등, 다양한 사람들이 보였습니다. 각계각층의 사람들이 섞여 있는 것을 보니 귀한 사실 하나가 떠올랐습니다. 부자든 가난한 사람이든, 자산가이든 노동자이든, 유명하든 그렇지 않든, 우리 사이에 진정한 구별은 없다는 것입니다. 그날 아침 그 거리에 있던 우리는 모두 같은 사람이었습니다. “가난한 자와 부한 자가 함께 살거니와 그 모두를 지으신 이는 여호와시니라” (잠언 22:2). 우리는 서로 다르지만 모두 하나님의 형상으로 창조되었습니다 (창세기 1:27).

그러나 그것이 다가 아닙니다. 하나님 앞에서 평등하다는 것은 경제적, 사회적 지위나 인종과 관계없이 모두가 죄를 가지고 태어났다는 것을 뜻하기도 합니다. “모든 사람이 죄를 범하였으매 하나님의 영광에 이르지 못하더니” (로마서 3:23). 우리는 모두 하나님 앞에서 불순종하고 똑같이 죄를 지었기에 예수님이 필요합니다.

우리는 종종 다양한 이유로 사람들을 여러 그룹으로 나눕니다. 그러나 사실 우리는 모두 한 인류입니다. 그리고 비록 모두 구주 예수님이 필요한 죄인이라는 같은 상황에 있지만, 하나님의 은혜로 “값 없이 의롭다 하심을 얻은”(하나님께 합당한) 자가 될 수 있습니다(24절).

EQUAL BEFORE GOD

While on vacation, my wife and I enjoyed some early morning bike rides. One route took us through a neighborhood of multi-million-dollar homes. We saw a variety of people—residents walking their dogs, fellow bike riders, and numerous workers building new homes or tending well-kept landscapes. It was a mixture of people from all walks of life, and I was reminded of a valuable reality. There was no true distinction among us. Rich or poor. Wealthy or working-class. Known or unknown. All of us on that street that morning were the same. “Rich and poor have this in common: The Lord is the Maker of them all” (PROVERBS 22:2). Regardless of differences, we were all made in God’s image (GENESIS 1:27).

But there’s more. Being equal before God also means that no matter our economic, social, or ethnic situation, we’re all born with a sin condition: “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (ROMANS 3:23). We’re all disobedient and equally guilty before Him, and we need Jesus.

We often divide people into groups for a variety of reasons. But, in reality, we’re all part of the human race. And though we’re all in the same situation sinners in need of a Savior—we can be “justified freely” (made right with God) by His grace (V. 24).

산만함에 대한 욕구

스마트폰 작은 화면에 쉬지 않고 올라오는 사진과 이야기와 알림을 보다가 지쳐서 내려 놓았습니다. 그러다 얼마 안 있어 다시 집어서 봅니다. ‘왜 이러는 걸까요?’

니콜라스 카는 그의 책 ‘생각하지 않는 사람들’(The Shallows)에서 인터넷이 우리 삶의 고요함을 어떻게 바꾸어 놓았는지 설명합니다. “인터넷은 나에게서 집중하여 깊이 생각하는 능력을 앗아가고 있다. 내가 온라인에 있든 아니든, 인터넷이 빨리 움직이는 입자의 흐름 속에서 정보를 빠르게 전해주는 것처럼 이제 나도 정보를 빨리 전달받기를 기대하고 있다. 내가 전에는 언어의 바다를 유영하는 스쿠버 다이버였다면 지금은 제트 스키를 타고 바다 물 위를 날아 다니고 있다.”

이렇게 정신적으로 제트 스키를 타고 사는 것은 건강해 보이지 않습니다. 하지만 속도를 줄여 잠잠한 영적 바다 속으로 깊이 들어가려면 무엇부터 해야 할까요?

다윗은 시편 131편에서 “내가 내 영혼으로 고요하고 평온하게 하였나니” (2절)라고 썼습니다. 다윗의 이 말은 책임이 나에게 있다는 것입니다. 습관을 바꾸는 것은 고요함을 ‘내가 선택’하는 것으로 시작됩니다. 여러 번 반복해서 선택해야 하기도 합니다. 그럴 때 우리는 비록 더딜 지라도 만족케 하시는 하나님의 선하심을 경험하게 됩니다. 하나님만이 소망을 주신다는 것(3절)을 기억하면서 어린아이처럼 만족하며 안식하게 됩니다. 그 소망은 어떤 스마트폰 앱도 건드릴 수 없고 어떤 소셜 미디어도 줄 수 없는 영혼의 만족에 대한 소망입니다.

APPETITE FOR DISTRACTION

I set my phone down, weary of the constant bombardment of images, ideas, and notifications that the little screen broadcasted. Then, I picked it up and turned it on again. Why?

In his book The Shallows, Nicholas Carr describes how the internet has shaped our relationship with stillness: “What the Net seems to be doing is chipping away my capacity for concentration and contemplation. Whether I’m online or not, my mind now expects to take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles. Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski.”

Living life on a mental jet ski doesn’t sound healthy. But how do we begin to slow down, to dive deeply into still spiritual waters?

In Psalm 131, David writes, “I have calmed and quieted myself” (V. 2). David’s words remind me that I have responsibility. Changing habits starts with my choice to be still—even if I must make that choice over and over again. Slowly, though, we experience God’s satisfying goodness. Like a little child, we rest in contentment, remembering that He alone offers hope (V. 3)—soul-satisfaction that no smartphone app can touch and no social media site can deliver.

시련을 극복하기

앤은 가난과 고통 속에서 자랐습니다. 형제 가운데 둘은 유아기 때 죽었습니다. 앤은 다섯 살 때 안과 질환으로 시력을 부분적으로 잃어 읽고 쓸 수가 없었고, 여덟 살 때 어머니가 결핵으로 돌아가셨습니다. 얼마 지나지 않아 아이들을 학대하던 아버지는 남아있는 세 자녀를 버렸습니다. 막내는 친척에게 보내졌지만 앤과 남동생 지미는 다 허물어지고 북적거리는 빈민구제소 턱스베리 암스하우스로 갔습니다. 거기서 몇 달 후 지미가 죽었습니다.

OVERCOMING TRIALS

Anne grew up in poverty and pain. Two of her siblings died in infancy. At five, an eye disease left her partially blind and unable to read or write. When Anne was eight, her mother died from tuberculosis. Shortly after, her abusive father abandoned his three surviving children. The youngest was sent to live with relatives, but Anne and her brother, Jimmie, went to Tewksbury Almshouse, a dilapidated, overcrowded poorhouse. A few months later, Jimmie died.

At age fourteen, Anne’s circumstances brightened. She was sent to a school for the blind, where she underwent surgery to improve her vision and learned to read and write. Though she struggled to fit in, she excelled academically and graduated valedictorian. Today we know her best as Anne Sullivan, Helen Keller’s teacher and companion. Through effort, patience, and love, Anne taught blind and deaf Helen to speak, to read Braille, and to graduate from college.

Joseph too had to overcome extreme trials: at seventeen, he was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and was later wrongly imprisoned (GENESIS 37; 39–41). Yet God used him to save Egypt and his family from famine (50:20).

We all face trials and troubles. But just as God helped Joseph and Anne to overcome and to deeply impact the lives of others, He can help and use us. Seek Him for help and guidance. He sees and hears.

하나님을 의지하라

친구들과 워터파크에서 공기주입으로 물에 떠다니는 장애물 코스에 도전해 보았습니다. 탄력 있고 미끄러운 기구 위를 똑바로 걷기는 거의 불가능했습니다. 비틀거리면서 경사로를 타고, 뛰어내리기도 하고, 다리를 건너기도 하다가 사정없이 물에 빠질 때면 비명을 질렀습니다. 이렇게 한 코스를 마치고 나서 완전히 지친 내 친구는 숨을 고르려고 “놀이탑” 중 하나에 몸을 기댔습니다. 그러자 바로 그 탑이 친구의 무게 때문에 찌그러지면서 친구는 물 속으로 곤두박질쳤습니다.

워터파크의 약해 빠진 놀이탑과는 달리 성경이 쓰인 시대의 탑은 방어와 보호를 위한 요새였습니다. 사사기 9:50-51은 데베스 사람들이 아비멜렉의 공격을 피해 어떻게 “견고한 망대”로 피했는지 설명합니다. 잠언 18장 10 절에서도 하나님을 견고한 망대의 이미지로 묘사하면서, 하나님은 그분을 신뢰하는 사람들을 구원하시는 분으로 설명했습니다.

그러나 때로 우리는 힘들고 지칠 때 하나님의 견고한 망대에 의지하기보다 우리의 직업이나 인맥, 육체의 편안함 같은 다른 것에 안전과 도움을 구합니다. 그의 재물에서 힘을 찾았던 부자와 우리가 다를 바가 없는 것입니다(11절). 그러나 공기를 넣은 놀이탑이 내 친구를 지탱해주지 못한 것처럼, 이런 것들은 우리에게 정말로 필요한 것을 줄 수 없습니다. 전능하시고 모든 상황을 주관하시는 하나님께서 참된 위로와 안전을 주십니다.

LEAN ON GOD

While at a water park with some friends, we attempted to navigate a floating obstacle course made of inflatable platforms. The bouncy, slippery platforms made walking straight almost impossible. As we wobbled our way across ramps, cliffs, and bridges, we found ourselves yelping as we fell unceremoniously into the water. After completing one course, my friend, completely exhausted, leaned on one of the “towers” to catch her breath. Almost immediately, it buckled under her weight, sending her hurtling into the water.

Unlike the flimsy towers at the water park, in Bible times, a tower was a stronghold for defense and protection. Judges 9:50–51 describes how the people of Thebez fled to “a strong tower” to hide from Abimelek’s attack on their city. In Proverbs 18:10, the writer used the image of a strong tower to describe who God is—the One who saves those who trust Him.

Sometimes, however, rather than lean on the strong tower of God when we’re tired or beaten down, we seek other things for safety and support—a career, relationships, or physical comforts. We’re no different from the rich man who looked for strength in his wealth (V. 11). But just as the inflatable tower couldn’t support my friend, these things can’t give us what we really need. God— who’s all-powerful and in control of all situations—provides true comfort and security.

넘치는 하나님의 은혜

생활비가 빠듯했던 엘렌은 크리스마스 보너스를 받고 기뻤습니다. 그런데 그것으로 끝나지 않고 은행에 돈을 입금하러 갔다가 또 한번 깜짝 선물을 받았습니다. 은행 직원이 크리스마스 선물로 은행에서 1월분 주택융자 상환금을 엘렌의 계좌에 넣어 주었다고 했습니다. 이제 엘렌과 트레이는 다른 청구서도 지불할 수 있었고, 사람들에게 크리스마스 깜짝 선물도 줄 수 있게 되었습니다!

우리의 기대 이상으로 축복하시는 것이 하나님의 방법입니다. 나오미는 남편과 두 아들의 죽음으로 쓰라린 아픔을 겪었습니다(룻기 1:20-21). 이럴 때 나오미의 친척 보아스가 며느리 룻과 결혼하고 두 사람에게 집을 마련해줌으로써 나오미는 절망적인 상황에서 구제받을 수 있었습니다(4:10).

나오미는 여기서 더 바랄 게 없었을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 룻과 보아스에게 복 주셔서 그들에게 아들을 주셨습니다. 이제 나오미에게 “[그녀의] 생기를 되찾아 줄 것이며, 늘그막에 [그녀를] 돌보아 줄” 손자가 생긴 것입니다 (15절, 새번역). 그것으로 끝나지 않았습니다. 베들레헴 여인들이 “나오미에게 아들이 태어났다”(17절)고 말했는데, 그 어린 오벳이 자라서 “다윗의 아버지인 이새의 아버지”(17절)가 되었습니다. 나오미의 가족은 역사상 가장 중요한 왕조인 이스라엘 왕의 계보에 들게 된 것입니다! 그리고 그것으로 끝나지 않고 다윗은 예수님의 조상이 되었습니다.

그리스도를 믿는 우리도 나오미와 비슷한 경우라 할 수 있습니다. 주님이 우리를 구원하시기 전에는 우리에게 아무것도 없었습니다. 그러나 이제는 우리를 온전히 받아주신 하나님 아버지께서 우리를 축복하여 다른 사람들을 다시 축복하게 하십니다. 충분히 차고도 넘치는 은혜인 것입니다.

GOD IS MORE THAN ENOUGH

Ellen was on a tight budget, so she was glad to receive a Christmas bonus. That would have been enough, but when she deposited the money, she received another surprise. The teller said that as a Christmas present the bank had deposited her January mortgage payment into her checking account. Now she and Trey could pay other bills and bless someone else with a Christmas surprise!

God has a way of blessing us beyond what we expect. Naomi was bitter and broken by the death of her husband and sons (RUTH 1:20–21). Her desperate situation was rescued by Boaz, a relative who married her daughter-in-law Ruth and provided a home for her and Naomi (4:10).

That might have been all Naomi could hope for. But then God blessed Ruth and Boaz with a son. Now Naomi had a grandson to “renew [her] life and sustain [her] in [her] old age” (V. 15). That would have been enough. As the women of Bethlehem put it, “Naomi has a son!” (V. 17). Then little Obed grew—and became “the father of Jesse, the father of David” (V. 17). Naomi’s family belonged to Israel’s royal line, the most important dynasty in history! That would have been enough. David, however, became the ancestor of . . . Jesus.

If we believe in Christ, we’re in a similar position to Naomi. We had nothing until He redeemed us. Now we’re fully accepted by our Father, who blesses us to bless others. That’s so much more than enough.

우리를 잊지 않으시는 하나님

어렸을 때 나는 우표수집을 했습니다. 앙콩(중국 푸키엔성 방언으로 “할아버지”)이 내 취미에 대해서 듣고 나서 사무실로 오는 우편물에서 매일 우표를 떼어 모으기 시작했습니다. 할머니 할아버지 집에 갈 때마다 앙콩은 나에게 여러 가지 아름다운 우표를 봉투로 하나 가득 주시곤 했습니다. 한번은 할아버지가 “내가 항상 바빠도 너는 안 잊을 거야.”라고 말씀하셨습니다.

앙콩은 남들 앞에서 드러나게 사랑을 표현하지는 않았지만 나는 할아버지에게서 깊은 사랑을 느꼈습니다. 하나님도 “나는 너를 잊지 아니할 것이라”(이사야 49:15)고 선언하시며 이스라엘을 향한 사랑을 한없이 깊이 드러내 보여주셨습니다. 하나님의 백성들은 지난 날 우상숭배와 불순종으로 바벨론에서 고난을 겪으며 “주께서 나를 잊으셨다”(14절)고 한탄했습니다. 그러나 그의 백성을 향한 하나님의 사랑은 변하지 않았습니다. 하나님은 그들에게 용서와 회복을 약속하셨습니다(8-13절).

“내가 너를 내 손바닥에 새겼다”고 옛적에 이스라엘 백성들에게 말씀하셨던 하나님은 오늘날에도 우리에게 말씀하십니다(16절). 나는 확신을 주는 이 말씀을 묵상할 때면 우리를 사랑하여 구원의 손을 펼치신 예수님의 못 자국 난 손을 더욱 깊이 생각하게 됩니다(요한복음 20:24-27). 할아버지의 우표와 다정한 말처럼 하나님은 영원한 사랑의 표시로 그분의 용서의 손을 내밀어 주십니다. 변치 않는 하나님의 사랑에 감사합시다. 하나님은 우리를 결코 잊지 않으십니다.

GOD WON’T FORGET YOU

As a child, I collected postage stamps. When my angkong (Fukienese for “grandfather”) heard of my hobby, he started saving stamps from his office mail every day. Whenever I visited my grandparents, Angkong would give me an envelope filled with a variety of beautiful stamps. “Even though I’m always busy,” he told me once, “I won’t forget you.”

Angkong wasn’t given to overt displays of affection, but I felt his love deeply. In an infinitely deeper way, God demonstrated His love toward Israel when He declared, “I will not forget you!” (ISAIAH 49:15). Suffering in Babylon for idolatry and disobedience in days past, His people lamented, “The Lord has forgotten me” (V. 14). But God’s love for His people hadn’t changed. He promised them forgiveness and restoration (VV. 8–13).

“I have engraved you on the palms of my hands,” God told Israel, as He also tells us today (V. 16). As I ponder His words of reassurance, it reminds me so deeply of Jesus’ nail-scarred hands— stretched out in love for us and for our salvation (JOHN 20:24–27). Like my grandfather’s stamps and his tender words, God holds out His forgiving hand as an eternal token of His love. Let’s thank Him for His love—an unchanging love. He will never forget us.
