하나님 알리기

캐서린은 하나님과 사람들을 사랑하는 마음을 바탕으로 성경번역 작업을 합니다. 그녀는 인도 여성들이 그들의 모국어로 성경을 읽고 더 깊게 이해하는 모습을 보면서 아주 기뻐합니다. 캐서린은 그들이 그렇게 더 깊이 이해하게 되면 “종종 환호하거나 손뼉을 칩니다. 예수님에 대해 읽고는 ‘아, 너무 놀라워요!’라고 말합니다.”라고 언급합니다.

MAKING GOD KNOWN

A love for God and for people undergirds Kathryn’s Bible translating work. She rejoices when women in India come to a deeper understanding of Scripture, reading it in their mother tongue. She remarks that when they do, “They often start cheering or clapping. They read about Jesus, and they say, ‘Oh, wonderful!’ ”

Kathryn longs for more people to read the Scriptures in their own language. In this desire, she holds close to her heart the vision of the aging disciple John on the island of Patmos. Through the Spirit, God ushered him into the throne room of heaven, where he saw “a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb” (REVELATION 7:9). All together they worshiped God, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God” (V. 10).

God continues to add to the great number of people praising Him. He uses not only the work of Bible translators and those praying for them, but also those who reach out to their neighbors in love with the good news of Jesus. We can rejoice in this joyful mission, marveling at how God will spark more people to join with the angels in saying, “Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever” (V. 12).

부르시고 준비시켜 주시는 하나님

직장 상사로부터 “당신이 할 일은 국제 도서박람회를 위해 현장 라디오 방송을 편성하는 것입니다.”라는 통보를 받고 나는 이 일이 새로운 영역이라 두려움을 느꼈습니다. 그래서 이렇게 기도했습니다. ‘하나님, 저는 이런 일을 한 번도 해본 적이 없습니다. 도와주세요.’

하나님은 나를 도와줄 사람들과 여러 자료들을 제공해 주셨습니다. 경험이 풍부한 기술자들과 방송인들을 포함하여, 박람회 기간 동안 내가 간과했던 세부사항들을 깨닫게 해줄 사람들을 만나게 해주셨습니다. 돌이켜보니, 방송이 잘 된 이유는 하나님이 무엇이 필요한지를 아시고, 또 나에게 이미 허락하신 능력을 잘 발휘하게 해주셨기 때문이었습니다.

하나님은 우리를 어떤 일로 부르실 때 우리를 또한 준비시켜 주십니다. 브살렐에게 성막 일을 맡기셨을 때 그는 이미 숙련된 장인이었습니다. 하나님은 거기에 더해 그에게 하나님의 영으로 채우시고, 지혜와 총명과 지식과 여러 가지 재주로 준비시켜 주셨습니다(출애굽기 31:3). 하나님은 또한 오홀리압을 보조자로 세우시고 숙련된 인력을 제공해 주셨습니다(6절). 하나님의 능력 힘입어 그들은 성막과 기구와 제사장들의 의복을 디자인하고 만들었습니다. 이것들은 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님께 제대로 예배하기 위해 꼭 필요한 도구들이었습니다(7-11절).

CALLED AND EQUIPPED BY GOD

“Your job for the international book expo,” my boss informed me, “is to organize an onsite radio broadcast.” I felt fear because this was new territory for me. God, I’ve never done anything like this, I prayed. Please help me.

God provided resources and people to guide me: experienced technicians and broadcasters, plus reminders during the expo of details I’d overlooked. In retrospect, I know that the broadcast went well because He knew what was needed and prompted me to use the skills He’d already given me.

When God calls us to a task, He also equips us for it. When He assigned Bezalel to work on the tabernacle, Bezalel was already a skilled craftsman. God further equipped him by filling him with His Spirit and with wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and all kinds of skills (EXODUS 31:3). God also gave him an assistant in Oholiab, as well as a skilled workforce (V. 6). With His enablement, the team designed and made the tent, its furnishings, and the priests’ garments. These were instrumental in the Israelites’ proper worship of God (VV. 7-11).

Bezalel means “in the shadow [protection] of God.” The craftsman worked on the project of a lifetime under God’s protection, power, and provision. Let’s courageously obey His prompting as we carry out a task to completion. He knows what we need, and how and when to give it.

장소 변경

내 친구 조앤은 2020년 코로나바이러스가 퍼지기 시작하던 바로 그때 뇌졸중으로 세상을 떠났습니다. 처음에는 가족들이 교회에서 장례 예배가 있을 것이라고 알렸지만, 참석 인원을 줄이기 위해 장례식장에서 하는 것이 가장 낫겠다고 결정했습니다. 곧 온라인에 “조앤 워너 – 장소 변경” 이라는 새로운 안내문이 실렸습니다.

그렇습니다. 조앤의 장소는 바뀌었습니다! 이 땅에서 천국으로 장소를 옮긴 것입니다. 하나님은 오래 전에 친구의 삶을 바꿔 주셨고, 친구는 거의 50년 동안 사랑을 다해 하나님을 섬겼습니다. 병원에서 죽음이 가까왔을 때에도, 조앤은 어려운 상황에 있는 다른 사랑하는 사람들의 형편을 걱정했습니다. 지금 그녀는 하나님과 함께 있습니다. 장소를 바꾼 것입니다.

바울 사도는 이 땅을 떠나 장소를 바꾸어 그리스도와 함께 있기를 열망했지만(고린도후서 5:8), 또한 동시에 이 땅에 남아 있는 것이 그가 섬기는 사람들을 위해 더 좋을 것이라고 느꼈습니다. 그래서 빌립보 신자들에게 “내가 육신으로 있는 것이 너희를 위하여 더 유익하리라”(빌립보서 1:24)고 썼습니다. 조앤 같은 누군가 때문에 슬플 때, 우리는 하나님께 이렇게 울부짖을 지도 모릅니다. ‘내 옆에, 그리고 그들이 사랑하고 섬겼던 많은 사람들 곁에 그들이 정말 필요합니다.’ 하지만 하나님은 그들과 우리 자신의 가장 적절한 장소 변경 시기가 언제인지를 잘 알고 계십니다.

A CHANGE OF VENUE

My friend Joann passed away from a stroke just as the coronavirus began to spread in 2020. At first her family published that her memorial service would be at her church, but then it was determined it was best to hold it at a funeral home to control the size of the group attending. The new notice online read: Joann Warners—Changed Venue.

Yes, her venue had changed! She’d gone from the venue of earth to the venue of heaven. God changed her life years before, and she lovingly served Him for nearly fifty years. Even while she lay near death in the hospital, she asked about others she loved who were struggling. Now she’s present with Him; she has changed venues.

The apostle Paul had the desire to be with Christ in another venue (2 CORINTHIANS 5:8), but he also felt it would be better for the people he served for him to remain on earth. He wrote to the Philippians, “It is more necessary for you that I remain in the body” (PHILIPPIANS 1:24). When we grieve for someone like Joann, we may cry out to God something similar: They’re needed here by me and many others they loved and served. But God knows the best timing for their change of venue and our own.

In the Spirit’s strength, we now “make it our goal to please [God]” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:9) until we see Him face-to-face—which will be far better.

2022년 7월 12일 과학자들은 새로운 제임스 웹 우주 망원경이 보여줄 아주 깊은 우주의 첫 번째 이미지들을 기다리고 있었습니다. 이 최첨단 망원경으로 인류는 이전에 보았던 것보다 더 멀리 우주를 볼 수 있습니다. 갑자기 숨막히는 한 이미지가 나타났습니다. 카리나 성운의 우주 공간을 천연색으로 보여주었는데, 이전에는 결코 이런 모습을 볼 수 없었습니다. 미 항공우주국의 한 천문학자는 유명한 무신론자 칼 세이건의 말을 인용하여, “어디선가 믿을 수 없는 놀라운 일이 기다리고 있다.”고 말했습니다.

GOD’S HANDIWORK

On July 12, 2022, scientists awaited the first images of deepest space from the new James Webb Space Telescope. The state-of-the-art telescope can look farther into the universe than mankind has ever looked before. Suddenly a breathtaking image emerges: a color space-scape of the Carina Nebula, never before seen like this. One NASA astronomer quoted Carl Sagan, a noted atheist: “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting.”

Sometimes people can look God in the eye and not see Him. But the psalmist David looked into the sky and knew exactly what he was seeing: “You have set your glory in the heavens” (PSALM 8:1). Sagan was right in saying that “something incredible is waiting,” but he failed to acknowledge what David clearly perceived: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them” (VV. 3-4).

When we see images of deepest space, we’re amazed, not so much because of technology, but because we’re witnessing the handiwork of God. We marvel because in the vastness of creation, God has made us “rulers over the works of [his] hands” (V. 6). Indeed, “something incredible is waiting”—God, waiting to bring believers in Jesus to Him when He returns. That’s the most breathtaking image of all.

아돌프 히틀러는 큰 거짓말이 작은 거짓말보다 더 강력하다고 믿었고, 비극적이게도 자신의 그런 생각을 성공적으로 시도했습니다. 정치 초년생일 때 그는 다른 사람들의 큰 뜻을 지지하는 것으로 만족한다고 주장했습니다. 권력을 잡았을 때는 그의 정당이 어느 누구도 박해할 의도가 없다고 말했습니다. 그는 나중에 미디어를 이용해 자신을 국민의 아버지 같은 존재로, 도덕적 지도자의 이미지로 그려냈습니다.

사탄은 우리 삶 속에서 거짓을 통해 힘을 얻습니다. 그리고 그는 “거짓말쟁이요 거짓의 아비”(요한복음 8:44)이기 때문에 가능할 때마다 우리를 두려움과 분노와 절망에 빠지게 합니다. 예수님의 말씀처럼, 사탄은 그 안에 어떤 진리도 들어 있지 않기 때문에 진리를 말할 수 없습니다.

LIES AND TRUTH

Adolf Hitler believed big lies were more powerful than small ones, and, tragically, he tested his theory successfully. Early in his political career, he claimed he was content to support others’ aspirations. When he came to power, he said his party didn’t intend to persecute anyone. Later, he used the media to portray himself as a father figure and moral leader.

Satan uses lies to gain power in our lives. Whenever possible, he provokes fear, anger, and despair because he’s “a liar and the father of lies” (JOHN 8:44). Satan can’t tell the truth because, as Jesus said, he doesn’t have any truth inside of him.

Here are a few of the enemy’s lies. First, our prayers don’t matter. Not true. The Bible says, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (JAMES 5:16). Second, when we’re in trouble, there’s no way out. Wrong again. “All things are possible with God” (MARK 10:27), and “he will also provide a way out” (1 CORINTHIANS 10:13). Third, God doesn’t love us. That’s false. Nothing can “separate us” from God’s love through Christ Jesus (ROMANS 8:38-39).

God’s truth is more powerful than lies. If we obey Jesus’ teaching in His strength, then we “will know the truth,” reject what’s false, and “the truth will set [us] free” (JOHN 8:31-32).

기쁨과 지혜

달콤하게 향기로운 벚나무 꽃들은 봄마다 일본 땅을 아주 아름다운 옅고 선명한 분홍으로 물들여 주민들과 여행객 모두의 마음을 즐겁게 합니다. 벚꽃의 짧은 수명은 일본인들에게 그것을 예민하게 잘 깨달아 피어 있는 동안 그 아름다움과 향기를 깊이 음미하게 합니다. 아주 짧은 그 경험의 순간이 가슴을 더 저미게 하는 것이지요. 그들은 이렇게 빠르게 변하는 것을 느긋하게 즐기는 이것을 “모노 노 아와레”라고 부릅니다.

우리가 사람으로서 기쁨의 감정을 추구하고 그것을 더 오래 누리고 싶은 것은 이해가 되는 일입니다. 하지만 고난으로 가득 찬 삶의 현실은 우리가 사랑의 하나님 안에서 믿음의 눈을 통해 고통과 즐거움 둘 다 볼 수 있는 능력을 키워야만 한다는 것을 알려줍니다. 우리는 지나치게 비관적일 필요도 없지만 그렇다고 비현실적으로 삶이 늘 화창할 것이라고 우리 스스로를 치장할 필요도 없습니다.

전도서는 우리에게 도움이 되는 모델을 제공합니다. 이 책은 종종 부정적인 서술만 기술한 것으로 여겨지지만, “모든 것이 헛되도다”(1:2)라고 쓴 바로 그 솔로몬 왕이 삶의 단순한 것들로부터 기쁨을 찾을 수 있도록 독자들에게 이렇게 격려하고 있습니다. “사람이 먹고 마시고 즐거워하는 것보다 더 나은 것이 해 아래에는 없음이라”(8:15).

JOY AND WISDOM

Sweetly fragrant cherry tree blossoms flood Japan with exquisite pale and vibrant pinks every spring, delighting the senses of residents and tourists alike. The short-lived nature of the blossoms cultivates a keen awareness in the Japanese to savor the beauty and scent while they linger: the very brevity of the experience heightens the poignancy of it. They call this deliberate enjoyment of something that will change quickly “mono-no-aware.”

As humans, it’s understandable that we’d want to seek and prolong feelings of joy. Yet the reality that life is riddled with hardship means we must cultivate the ability to view both pain and pleasure through a lens of faith in a loving God. We needn’t be overly pessimistic, nor should we fashion ourselves an unrealistically sunny outlook on life.

The book of Ecclesiastes offers a helpful model for us. Though this book is sometimes thought to be a catalog of negative statements, the same King Solomon who wrote that “everything is meaningless” (1:2) also encouraged his readers to find joy in the simple things in life saying, “There is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad” (8:15).

Joy comes when we ask God to help us “know wisdom” and learn to observe “all that God has done” (VV. 16-17) in both beautiful seasons and in difficult ones (3:11-14; 7:13-14), knowing that neither is permanent on this side of heaven.

제1차 세계대전을 마무리한 파리 강화 회의 후, 프랑스의 페르디낭 포슈 원수는 “이건 평화가 아니다. 20년 동안의 휴전일 뿐이다.”라고 신랄하게 비판했습니다. 포슈의 생각은 그 끔찍했던 전쟁이 “모든 전쟁을 끝내기 위한 전쟁”일 거라는 일반적인 의견과는 완전히 달랐습니다. 그리고 20년 2개월 후에 제2차 세계대전이 발발했습니다. 포슈가 옳았습니다.

오래전, 그 당시 하나님의 외로운 참 선지자 미가야는 이스라엘이 맞을 참담한 군사적 결과를 끊임없이 예언했습니다(역대하 18:7). 그에 반해 아합 왕의 거짓 선지자 400명은 승리를 예언했습니다. 한 궁정 관리는 미가야에게 “선지자들의 말이 하나 같이 왕에게 좋게 말하니 청하건대 당신의 말도 그들 중 한 사람처럼 좋게 말하소서”(12절)라고 말했습니다.

미가야는 “내 하나님께서 말씀하시는 것 곧 그것을 내가 말하리라”(13 절)고 대답했습니다. 그는 이스라엘이 “목자 없는 양 같이 산에 흩어질”(16절) 것도 예언했습니다. 미가야가 옳았습니다. 아람 군대가 아합을 죽였고 왕의 군대는 도망가 버렸습니다(33-34절; 열왕기상 22:35-36).

예수님을 따르는 우리도 미가야처럼 일반적인 생각과 다른 메시지를 전하고 있습니다. 예수님은 “나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라”(요한복음 14:6)고 말씀하셨습니다. 많은 사람들은 이 메시지가 지극히 편협해 보여 좋아하지도 않고, 또 지나치게 ‘배타적’이라고 말합니다. 하지만 그리스도께서는 ‘포용적인’ 위로의 메시지를 가져오십니다. 주님은 그분께로 돌아오는 모든 사람들을 반갑게 맞아주십니다.

A SOLITARY VOICE

After the Paris Peace Conference that concluded World War I, French Marshall Ferdinand Foch bitterly observed, “This is not peace. It is an armistice for twenty years.” Foch’s view contradicted the popular opinion that the horrifying conflict would be the “war to end all wars.” Twenty years and two months later, World War II erupted. Foch was right.

Long ago, Micaiah, the lone true prophet of God present at the time, consistently prophesied dire military results for Israel (2 CHRONICLES 18:7). In contrast, four hundred of King Ahab’s false prophets foretold victory: “Look, the other prophets without exception are predicting success for the king,” a court official told Micaiah. “Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favorably” (V. 12).

Micaiah responded, “I can tell him only what my God says” (V. 13). He prophesied how Israel would be “scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd” (V. 16). Micaiah was right. The Arameans killed Ahab and his army fled (VV. 33-34; 1 KINGS 22:35-36).

Like Micaiah, we who follow Jesus share a message that contradicts popular opinion. Jesus said, “No one comes to the Father except through me” (JOHN 14:6). Many don’t like that message because it seems harshly narrow. Too exclusive, people say. Yet Christ brings a comforting message that’s inclusive. He welcomes everyone who turns to Him.

영적인 유산 남기기

십대였을 때, 나와 언니는 예수님을 구주로 영접한 엄마를 이해하지 못했지만, 엄마에게 나타난 변화는 부인할 수 없었습니다. 엄마는 더 큰 평안과 기쁨을 누렸고 교회에서 성실히 봉사하기 시작했습니다. 또 너무 성경공부를 하고 싶어 신학교를 다니고 졸업까지 했습니다. 엄마가 예수님을 믿은 지 몇 년 후, 언니도 예수님을 영접하고 주님을 섬기기 시작 했습니다. 그로부터 몇 년 후, 나도 예수님을 믿고 섬기기 시작했습니다. 여러 해가 지나, 아버지도 주님을 믿게 되었습니다. 예수님을 믿기로 한 엄마의 결정은 우리 가족과 친척들의 삶을 변화시키는 파급효과를 가져왔습니다.

바울 사도는 디모데에게 보낸 마지막 편지에서 예수님에 대한 믿음을 지키기를 권면하면서 디모데의 영적 유산에 대해 말했습니다. “네 속에 거짓이 없는 믿음이 있음을 생각함이라 이 믿음은 먼저 네 외조모 로이스와 네 어머니 유니게 속에 있더니 네 속에도 있는 줄을 확신하노라”(디모데후서 1:5).

모든 어머니와 할머니들이여, 여러분의 결정은 여러 세대에 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다.

LEAVING A SPIRITUAL LEGACY

As teens, my sister and I didn’t understand my mom’s decision to receive Jesus as her Savior, but we couldn’t deny the changes we saw in her. She had more peace and joy and began faithfully serving at church. She had such a hunger for studying the Bible that she attended and graduated from seminary. A few years after my mom’s decision, my sister accepted Christ and started serving Him. And a few years after that, I also placed my trust in Jesus and started serving Him. Many years later, my father joined us in believing in Him as well. My mom’s decision for Christ created a life-changing ripple effect among our immediate and extended family.

When the apostle Paul wrote his final letter to Timothy and encouraged him to persevere in his faith in Jesus, he noted Timothy’s spiritual heritage. “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also” (2 TIMOTHY 1:5).

Moms and grandmoms, your decisions can affect generations.

How beautiful that Timothy’s mom and grandmom helped nurture his faith so he could become the man God was calling him to be.

On this Mother’s Day and beyond, let’s honor mothers who’ve made a decision to follow Jesus.

Let’s also leave a spiritual legacy for our loved ones.

그리스도 안에서 끝까지 한 길을 가기

회색의 간달프가 백색의 사루만과 맞서게 되었을 때, 사루만이 악마 사우론의 힘으로부터 중간계를 보호해야 할 그의 임무를 배반한 것이 분명해졌습니다. 게다가 사루만은 사우론과 동맹을 맺기까지 했습니다! J. R. R. 톨킨의 고전 작품을 바탕으로 한 영화 ‘반지 원정대’의 그 장면에서 전에 친구였던 두 사람은 웅장한 선과 악의 싸움을 벌입니다. 사루만이 끝까지 한 길을 가서 자신이 옳다고 생각한 일을 했더라면 어땠을까요!

사울 왕도 끝까지 한 길을 가지 못했습니다. 한 기록에 따르면, 그는 올바르게 “[이스라엘]에서 신접한 자와 박수를 쫓아내었습니다”(사무엘상 28:3). 재미 삼아 주술을 하는 것을 하나님이 “가증하다”고 선언하셨기 때문에 (신명기 18:9-12) 그렇게 한 것은 잘한 일이었습니다. 그러나 블레셋 대군을 물리칠 방법을 하나님께 구하였으나 그의 지난 날의 잘못 때문에 하나님이 응답하시지 않자, 사울은 할 수 없이 “나를 위하여 신접한 여인을 찾으라 내가 그리로 가서 그에게 물으리라”(사무엘상 28:7)라고 하였습니다. 완전한 반전이 아닐 수 없습니다! 사울은 자신이 옳다고 생각하고 있는 자신의 신의를 어기면서 또 다시 실패하고 말았습니다.

천 년 후, 예수님은 제자들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “오직 너희 말은 옳다 옳다, 아니라 아니라 하라 이에서 지나는 것은 악으로부터 나느니라”(마태복음 5:37). 다시 말해, 우리가 그리스도께 순종하기로 결심했다면 우리의 맹세를 지키고 진실된 모습으로 사는 것이 정말 중요합니다. 하나님의 도우심으로, 그런 일들을 하면서 한 길을 계속 가도록 합시다.

STAYING THE COURSE IN CHRIST

As Gandalf the Grey confronted Saruman the White, it became clear that the latter had turned from what he was supposed to be doing—helping to protect Middle-earth from the power of the evil being Sauron. What’s more, Saruman had allied with Sauron! In this scene from the film The Fellowship of the Ring, based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic work, the two former friends then engage in an epic good-versus-evil battle. If only Saruman had stayed the course and done what he knew was right!

King Saul also had trouble staying the course. In one account, he rightly “expelled the mediums and spiritists from [Israel]” (1 SAMUEL 28:3). Good move, for God had declared that dabbling in the occult was “detestable” (DEUTERONOMY 18:9-12). But when God didn’t answer the king’s plea—due to his prior failures—for how to deal with a massive Philistine army, Saul caved: “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her” (1 SAMUEL 28:7). Talk about a complete reversal! Saul failed once more as he went against his own decree—what he knew was right.

A millennium later, Jesus said to His disciples, “All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one” (MATTHEW 5:37). In other words, if we’ve committed ourselves to obeying Christ, it’s vital that we keep our oaths and be truthful. Let’s stay the course in doing those things as God helps us.

우리 스스로 구하려고 애쓰는 것

오래 전, 뉴욕시에서 엘리베이터에 갇힌 사람들에게 침착하고 안전하게 기다리는 법을 알려주는 “안전하게 가만히 있기” 광고 캠페인을 시작했습니다. 전문가들의 보고서를 보면 엘리베이터에 갇힌 사람들이 문을 강제로 열거나 다른 수단으로 탈출하려다 죽은 사례들이 있었다고 합니다. 대처할 최선의 방법은 단순히 알람 버튼을 눌러 도움을 요청하고, 구조대원들이 도착하기를 기다리는 것입니다.

바울 사도는 죄의 나락에 빠진 사람들을 돕기 위한 아주 다른 방식의 구조 계획을 설명합니다. 그는 에베소 사람들에게 그들이 “[그들의] 죄로 죽어” (에베소서 2:1) 영적으로 완전히 무력한 상태에 있다는 사실을 상기시켰습니다. 그들은 덫에 걸려 사탄에 굴복하고(2절) 하나님께 복종하기를 거부하여 하나님의 분노를 샀습니다. 그렇다고 하나님은 그들을 영적인 어두움에 그대로 가두어두지 않으셨습니다. 바울 사도는 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 “은혜로 구원을 받았다”(5, 8절)고 기록합니다. 하나님의 구원 계획에 응답하게 되면 믿음이 뒤따라오게 됩니다. 믿음이란 우리 스스로 구하려고 애쓰기를 포기하고 예수님께 우리의 구원을 요청하는 것을 의미합니다.

죄의 덫에서 벗어나는 것은 우리로 말미암은 것이 아니라 하나님의 은혜이며, 오직 예수님을 통해 주시는 “하나님의 선물”입니다(8절).

TRYING TO SAVE OURSELVES

Many years ago, New York City launched a “Stay Safe. Stay Put” ad campaign to educate people on how to stay calm and be safe when trapped in an elevator. Experts reported that some trapped passengers had died when they tried to pry open the elevator doors or attempted exiting by some other means. The best plan of action is to simply use the alarm button to call for help and wait for emergency responders to arrive.

The apostle Paul spelled out a very different type of rescue plan—one to help those trapped in the downward pull of sin. He reminded the Ephesians of their utter spiritual helplessness— being truly “dead in [their] . . . sins” (EPHESIANS 2:1). They were trapped, obeying the devil (V. 2), and refusing to submit to God. This resulted in them being the subject of God’s wrath. But He didn’t leave them trapped in spiritual darkness. And those who believe in Jesus, the apostle wrote, “by grace . . . have been saved” (VV. 5, 8). A response to God’s rescue initiative results in faith. And faith means we’ll give up on trying to save ourselves and call on Jesus to rescue us.

By God’s grace, being rescued from sin’s trap doesn’t originate with us. It’s “the gift of God” through Jesus alone (V. 8).
