생명의 면류관

열 두 살의 리아디아네즈 로드리게즈-에스파다는 5킬로미터(3마일이 조금 넘는) 경주에 늦을까 봐 걱정이 됐습니다. 너무 긴장한 나머지 자기가 뛸 경주보다 15분 앞서 하프 마라톤(13마일 이상!) 참가자들에 섞여 출발해 버렸습니다. 리아디아네즈는 다른 주자들과 보조를 맞추며 한발 한발 앞으로 달려 나갔습니다. 4마일을 달렸는데도 결승선이 나타나지 않자 아이는 자기가 더 멀고 더 힘든 경주에 잘못 들어온 것을 알았습니다. 하지만 중도에 포기하지 않고 계속 달렸습니다. 이렇게 생각지도 않은 하프 마라톤을 뛴 리아디아네즈는 13.1마일 경주를 완주하여 2,111명 중 1,885 번째로 들어왔습니다. 인내력으로 해낸 것입니다!

예수님을 믿었던 많은 초대교회 신자들도 박해 아래에서 그리스도를 향한 경주를 그만두고 싶었습니다. 그러나 야고보는 그들에게 계속 달리라고 격려했습니다. 인내하며 시험을 견디는 사람들에게 하나님은 두 가지 보상을 약속하셨습니다(야고보서 1:4, 12). 첫째는, “인내를 온전히 이루면” 그들로 “온전하고 구비하여 조금도 부족함이 없게 하겠다”는 약속입니다(4절). 둘째는, 하나님께서 그들에게 “생명의 면류관”을 주셔서 이 땅에서는 예수님 안에서 살며 내세에는 주님과 함께 거할 것이라는 약속입니다(12절).

때로는 그리스도인의 경주가 우리가 이미 알고 등록한 경주와 달리, 생각보다 더 길고 더 어려운 것처럼 느껴지기도 합니다. 그러나 하나님께서 우리의 필요를 공급하시면 우리는 인내하며 계속 달릴 수 있습니다.

THE CROWN OF LIFE

Twelve-year-old LeeAdianez Rodriguez-Espada was worried that she’d be late for a 5K run (just over 3 miles). Her anxiousness led her to take off with a group of runners fifteen minutes earlier than her start time—with participants of the halfmarathon (more than 13 miles!). LeeAdianez fell in pace with other runners and put one foot in front of the other. At mile four, with the finish line nowhere in sight, she realized that she was in a longer and more difficult race. Instead of dropping out, she simply kept running. The accidental half-marathoner completed her 13.1- mile race and placed 1,885th out of 2,111 finishers. Now that’s perseverance!

While undergoing persecution, many first-century believers in Jesus wanted to drop out of the race for Christ, but James encouraged them to keep running. If they patiently endured testing, God promised a double reward (JAMES 1:4, 12). First,“perseverance [would] finish its work” so they could be “mature and complete, not lacking anything” (V. 4). Second, God would give them the “crown of life”—life in Jesus on earth and the promise of being in His presence in the life to come (V. 12).

Some days the Christian race feels like it’s not the one we signed up for—it’s something longer and more difficult than we expected. But as God provides what we need, we can persevere and keep on running.

다른 사람들의 필요를 채워줌

심한 정신질환을 앓던 필립의 아버지가 거리에 나가 살겠다고 집을 나갔습니다. 신디와 어린 아들 필립은 하루 종일 그를 찾아보았지만 찾질 못했습니다. 필립은 당연히 아버지의 안위가 걱정되었습니다. 그는 어머니에게 아버지를 비롯해 집 없는 사람들이 따뜻하게 지내고 있는지 물었습니다. 이 질문이 계기가 되어 그들은 담요와 방한장비를 모아 그 지역 노숙자들에게 나눠주는 일을 시작했습니다. 십 년이 넘도록 이 일을 자신의 평생 사역으로 여겨온 신디는 아들 덕분에, 그리고 하나님을 향한 깊은 믿음 덕분에 따뜻하게 잘 데가 없는 사람들의 고통에 눈을 뜨게 되었다고 말했습니다.

성경은 다른 사람들의 필요를 살피라고 우리에게 오래도록 가르쳐 왔습니다. 모세는 출애굽기에서 넉넉지 못한 사람들을 어떻게 대해야 하는지 일련의 원칙들을 기록하고 있습니다. 다른 사람의 필요를 채워주고 싶은 마음이 들 때 “채권자 같이 하지 말며” 이자를 받지 말아야 합니다(출애굽기 22:25). 만일 이웃의 옷을 담보로 잡으면 해가 지기 전에 돌려주어야 했습니다. “몸을 가릴 것이라고는 그것밖에 없는데, 그가 무엇을 덮고 자겠느냐?”(27절, 새번역).

고통 받는 사람들의 아픔을 덜어줄 수 있도록 우리의 눈과 마음을 열어달라고 하나님께 간구합시다. 신디와 필립처럼 많은 사람의 필요를 돕든지 아니면 한 사람을 돕든지, 우리가 존중과 돌봄의 마음으로 도울 때 하나님을 영화롭게 합니다.

MEETING THE NEEDS OF OTHERS

Phillip’s father suffered from severe mental illness and had left home to live on the streets. After Cyndi and her young son Phillip spent a day searching for him, Phillip was rightly concerned for his dad’s well-being. He asked his mother whether his father and other people without homes were warm. In response, they launched an effort to collect and distribute blankets and cold-weather gear to homeless people in the area. For more than a decade, Cyndi has considered it her life’s work, crediting her son and her deep faith in God for awakening her to the hardship of being without a warm place to sleep.

The Bible has long taught us to respond to the needs of others. In the book of Exodus, Moses records a set of principles to guide our interaction with those who lack plentiful resources. When we’re moved to supply the needs of another, we’re to “not treat it like a business deal” and should make no gain or profit from it (EXODUS 22:25). If a person’s cloak was taken as collateral, it was to be returned by sunset “because that cloak is the only covering your neighbor has. What else can they sleep in?” (V. 27).

Let’s ask God to open our eyes and hearts to see how we can ease the pain of those who are suffering. Whether we seek to meet the needs of many—as Cyndi and Phillip have—or those of a single person, we honor Him by treating them with dignity and care.

생명을 구하는 하나님의 지혜

한 우편배달부가 어느 우편함에 우편물이 계속 쌓이는 것을 보고 걱정이 되었습니다. 그 배달원은 혼자 사는 그 할머니가 평소에 우편물을 매일 가져가는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 배달원은 지혜롭게 할머니의 이웃에게 그 사실을 이야기했습니다. 그 이웃은 할머니의 집 열쇠를 여분으로 가지고 있던 다른 이웃에게 알렸고, 그들은 함께 친구 할머니의 집으로 들어가 바닥에 쓰러져 있는 할머니를 발견했습니다. 나흘 전에 넘어진 할머니는 일어나지도 못하고 전화도 할 수 없었던 것입니다. 그 우편배달부의 지혜와 관심, 그리고 이를 행동으로 옮긴 것이 할머니의 생명을 구했습니다.

잠언은 “지혜로운 자는 사람을 얻는다”(11:30)고 말합니다. 옳은 행실로 하나님의 지혜를 따라 살면서 생기는 분별력은 자신뿐 아니라 만나는 사람들에게 복이 됩니다. 하나님과 그분의 일을 영화롭게 하면 그 열매로 선하고 활기찬 삶을 살 수 있습니다. 그리고 그 열매는 또한 다른 사람들을 돌보고 그들의 안위를 살피게 합니다.

잠언의 저자가 계속 강조하듯 지혜는 하나님을 의지하는 데에서 얻어집니다. 지혜는 “진주보다 나으므로 무릇 원하는 것을 이에 비교할 수 없습니다”(8:11). 하나님이 주시는 지혜는 우리를 평생 인도해 주며, 한 생명을 영원히 구할 수도 있습니다.

GOD’S WISDOM SAVES LIVES

A mail carrier became concerned after seeing one of her customers’ mail pile up. The postal worker knew the elderly woman lived alone and usually picked up her mail every day. Making a wise choice, the worker mentioned her concern to one of the woman’s neighbors. This neighbor alerted yet another neighbor, who had a spare key to the woman’s home. Together they entered their friend’s home and found her lying on the floor. She had fallen four days earlier and couldn’t get up or call for help. The postal worker’s wisdom, concern, and decision to act likely saved her life.

Proverbs says, “the one who is wise saves lives” (11:30). The discernment that comes from doing right and living according to God’s wisdom can bless not only ourselves but those we encounter too. The fruit of living out what honors Him and His ways can produce a good and refreshing life. And our fruit also prompts us to care about others and to look out for their well-being.

As the writer of Proverbs asserts throughout the book, wisdom is found in reliance on God. Wisdom is considered “more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her” (8:11). The wisdom God provides is there to guide us throughout our lives. It just might save a life for eternity.

크리스마스 다음날

즐거웠던 크리스마스가 지나고 다음 날이 되니 조금 허탈한 기분이 들었습니다. 친구네 집에서 함께 밤을 보내며 잠을 제대로 자지 못했고, 게다가 집으로 돌아오는 길에 차가 고장이 났습니다. 그리고 눈이 내리기 시작했습니다. 우리는 차를 버려두고 눈과 진눈깨비를 맞으며 택시를 타고 ‘가라앉은’ 기분으로 집에 왔습니다.

크리스마스가 지나 기분이 가라앉는 것은 우리만이 아닙니다. 그동안 과식해서 그런 것이든, 아니면 라디오에서 캐롤이 갑자기 사라지고 지난 주에 산 선물들이 지금은 반값에 팔려서 그런 것이든, 크리스마스의 들뜬 기분은 순식간에 사라질 수 있습니다!

성경에는 예수님이 태어난 다음 날에 대한 기록이 없습니다. 그러나 베들레헴까지 걸어와 숙소를 찾아 헤매고, 출산의 고통을 겪은 다음 갑자기 찾아온 목자들을 맞아야 했던(누가복음 2:4-18) 마리아와 요셉은 매우 지쳐 있었을 것입니다. 그러나 나는 마리아가 갓난아기를 품에 안고, 이전에 천사가 찾아왔던 일(1:30–33)과 엘리자베스가 축복해준 일(42–45절), 자기 아이의 운명에 대해 알게 된 일(46-55절) 등, 여러 생각을 했으리라 상상해 봅니다. 마리아는 그런 것들을 “마음에 새기면서”(2:19) 그날의 피로와 산고를 이겨냈을 것입니다.

누구에게나 마음이 “가라앉는” 날이 있습니다. 크리스마스 다음 날이 그럴 수 있습니다. 그런 날들을 맞을 때 우리도 마리아처럼 이 땅에 오셔서 함께 하심으로 세상을 영원히 밝게 비추시는 예수님을 깊이 생각하도록 합시다.

THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS

After all the joy of Christmas Day, the following day felt like a letdown. We’d stayed overnight with friends but hadn’t slept well. Then our car broke down as we were driving home. Then it started to snow. We had abandoned the car and taxied home in the snow and sleet feeling blah.

We’re not the only ones who’ve felt low after Christmas Day. Whether it’s from excessive eating, the way carols suddenly disappear from the radio, or the fact that the gifts we bought last week are now on sale half price, the magic of Christmas Day can quickly dissipate!

The Bible never tells us about the day after Jesus’ birth. But we can imagine that after walking to Bethlehem, scrambling for accommodation, Mary’s pain in giving birth, and having shepherds drop by unannounced (LUKE 2:4–18), Mary and Joseph were exhausted. Yet as Mary cradled her newborn, I can imagine her reflecting on her angelic visitation (1:30–33), Elizabeth’s blessing (VV. 42–45), and her own realization of her baby’s destiny (VV. 46–55). Mary “pondered” such things in her heart (2:19), which must’ve lightened the tiredness and physical pain of that day.

We’ll all have “blah” days, perhaps even the day after Christmas. Like Mary, let’s face them by pondering the One who came into our world, forever brightening it with His presence.

그리스도 탄생의 약속

1962년 11월 물리학자 존 모클리는 “평범한 아이라고 해서 컴퓨터의 달인이 될 수 없다고 생각할 이유는 없다”고 말했습니다. 모클리의 이러한 예측은 당시로서는 특기할 만한 것이었는데, 지금 놀랍도록 정확하게 들어맞고 있습니다. 오늘날 컴퓨터나 휴대용 기기 사용은 아이들이 가장 일찍 배우는 기술의 하나입니다.

이렇게 모클리의 예언이 이루어진 것처럼 실제로 이루어진 훨씬 더 중요한 예언들이 있습니다. 그리스도께서 오신다고 한 성경 속 예언들입니다. 예를 들어 미가서 5장 2절은 이렇게 선포하고 있습니다. “베들레헴 에브라다야 너는 유다 족속 중에 작을지라도 이스라엘을 다스릴 자가 네게서 내게로 나올 것이라 그의 근본은 상고에, 영원에 있느니라.” 하나님은 예수님을 보내어 자그마한 베들레헴에서 태어나게 하심으로 다윗 왕의 계보를 잇게 하셨습니다 (누가복음 2:4-7 참조).

예수님의 초림을 정확하게 예언한 성경은 예수님의 재림도 약속하고 있습니다(사도행전 1:11). 예수님은 그의 첫 제자들에게 그들을 위해 다시 오시겠다고 약속하셨습니다(요한복음 14:1-4).

이번 크리스마스에는 예수님의 탄생을 둘러싼 정확한 예언들을 깊이 생각하면서, 다시 오시겠다는 주님의 약속을 생각하며 주님과 얼굴을 마주하게 될 그 장엄한 순간을 위해 준비할 수 있기를 바랍니다!

THE PROMISE OF CHRIST’S BIRTH

In November 1962, physicist John W. Mauchly said, “There is no reason to suppose the average boy or girl cannot be master of a personal computer.” Mauchly’s prediction seemed remarkable at the time, but it proved astonishingly accurate. Today, using a computer or handheld device is one of the earliest skills a child learns.

While Mauchly’s prediction has come true, so have much more important predictions—those made in Scripture about the coming of Christ. For example, Micah 5:2 declared, “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” God sent Jesus, who arrived in tiny Bethlehem—marking him as from the royal line of David (SEE LUKE 2:4–7).

The same Bible that accurately predicted the first coming of Jesus also promises His return (ACTS 1:11). Jesus promised His first followers that He would come back for them (JOHN 14:1–4).

This Christmas, as we ponder the accurately predicted facts surrounding the birth of Jesus, may we also consider His promised return, and allow Him to prepare us for that majestic moment when we see Him face to face!

크리스마스 별

“그 별만 찾으면 어디서나 집으로 가는 길을 찾을 수 있어.” 어린 시절 아버지가 북극성 찾는 법을 가르쳐 주시며 하신 말씀입니다. 아버지는 전쟁 때 군인으로 복무하시며 밤 하늘을 보고 방향을 찾아야 살 수 있었던 순간들이 있었다고 했습니다. 그래서 아버지는 나에게 몇몇 별자리의 이름과 위치를 가르쳐 주셨는데, 그 중 제일 중요한 것이 북극성을 찾는 것이었습니다. 북극성의 위치만 알면 어디서나 방향 감각을 갖게 되고 어느 쪽으로 가야 할지도 알 수 있습니다.

성경은 아주 중요한 또 하나의 별에 대해 이야기합니다. 동방(현재 이란과 이라크를 포함하는 지역)에서 온 박사들은 하나님이 그의 백성을 위해 세우실 왕의 탄생을 알리는 하늘의 징조를 지켜보고 있었습니다. 그들은 예루살렘에 도착하여 “유대인의 왕으로 나신 이가 어디 계시냐 우리가 동방에서 그의 별을 보고 그에게 경배하러 왔노라”(마태복음 2:1-2)고 말했습니다.

천문학자들은 베들레헴의 별이 어떻게 해서 나타나게 되었는지 모릅니다. 그러나 성경은 하나님께서 “광명한 새벽 별”(요한계시록 22:16)이신 예수님을 세상에 알리기 위해 그 별을 창조하셨다고 말합니다. 그리스도는 우리를 죄에서 구원하시고 하나님께로 다시 인도하시기 위해 오셨습니다. 그리스도를 따르십시오. 그러면 집으로 가는 길을 찾게 될 것입니다.

THE CHRISTMAS STAR

“If you find that star, you can always find your way home.” Those were my father’s words when he taught me how to locate the North Star as a child. Dad had served in the armed forces during wartime, and there were moments when his life depended on being able to navigate by the night sky. So he made sure I knew the names and locations of several constellations, but it was being able to find Polaris that mattered most of all. Knowing that star’s location meant I could gain a sense of direction wherever I was and find where I was supposed to be.

Scripture tells of another star of vital importance. “Magi from the east,” learned men (from an area encompassed by Iran and Iraq today) had been watching for signs in the sky of the birth of the One who was to be God’s king for His people. They came to Jerusalem asking “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him” (MATTHEW 2:1–2).

Astronomers don’t know what caused the star of Bethlehem to appear, but the Bible reveals that God created it to point the world to Jesus—“the bright Morning Star” (REVELATION 22:16). Christ came to save us from our sins and guide us back to God. Follow Him, and you’ll find your way home.

예수님 안에서의 교제

나는 주일 오전 예배 후에 불을 끄고 교회 문을 단속하는 담당자가 누구인지는 모르지만 그에 대해서 한 가지는 압니다. 주일 저녁 식사가 늦을 거라는 사실입니다. 그 이유는 많은 교인들이 예배가 끝난 뒤에도 남아서 인생의 결정들, 마음의 문제, 괴로움 등을 나누기를 좋아하기 때문입니다. 예배가 끝나고 20분쯤 지나 돌아다니며 많은 사람들이 아직도 교제를 나누는 모습을 보면 매우 즐겁습니다.

교제는 예수님을 닮은 삶의 주된 요소입니다. 교인들과 함께 시간을 보내면서 생기는 연대감이 없다면 우리는 믿는 사람으로서 얻을 수 있는 많은 혜택을 놓치게 될 것입니다.

예를 들어, 바울은 우리가 “피차 권면하고 서로 덕을 세울”(데살로니가전서 5:11) 수 있다고 말합니다. 히브리서 저자도 이에 동의하면서, 우리는 “서로 격려할” 필요가 있기 때문에 함께 모이기를 게을리하지 말라고 말합니다 (10:25). 저자는 또 우리가 함께 있으면 “서로 돌아보아 사랑과 선행을 격려하게”(24절) 된다고 말합니다.

예수님을 위해 살기로 헌신한 우리는 충실하고 섬기는 일에 우리 자신을 잘 준비시킴으로써 “마음이 약한 자들을 격려하고” “모든 사람에게 오래 참을” 수 있습니다(데살로니가전서 5:14). 하나님의 도우심으로 그렇게 살 때 우리는 진정한 교제를 누리고 “서로 대하든지 모든 사람을 대하든지 항상 선을 따를” 수 있습니다(15절).

FELLOWSHIP IN JESUS

I’m not sure who’s responsible for turning out the lights and locking up the church after our Sunday morning service, but I know one thing about that person: Sunday dinner is going to be delayed. That’s because so many people love to hang around after church and talk about life decisions, heart issues and struggles, and more. It’s a joy to look around twenty minutes after the service and see so many people still enjoying each other’s company.

Fellowship is a key component of the Christlike life. Without the connectivity that comes from spending time with fellow believers, we’d miss out on many benefits of being a believer.

For instance, Paul says we can “encourage one another and build each other up” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:11). The author of Hebrews agrees, telling us not to neglect getting together, because we need to be “encouraging one another” (10:25). And the writer also says that when we’re together, we “spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (V. 24).

As people dedicated to living for Jesus, we prepare ourselves for faithfulness and service as we “encourage the disheartened” and are “patient with everyone” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:14). Living that way, as He helps us, allows us to enjoy true fellowship and “to do what is good for each other and for everyone else” (V. 15).

장벽을 허물어 하나가 되다

베를린 장벽 때문에 1961년 이후 많은 가족과 친구들이 떨어져 살아야 했습니다. 그 해 동독 정부가 장벽을 세워 동독 주민들이 서독으로 탈출하는 것을 막았습니다. 실제로 1949년부터 장벽이 세워진 날까지 약 250만 명의 동독 주민들이 서독으로 넘어간 것으로 추산됩니다. 로널드 레이건 미 대통령은 1987년 그 장벽 앞에 서서 “이 벽을 허뭅시다.”라고 한 말로 유명합니다. 그의 말에 담긴 변화에의 열망은 더욱 고조되어 마침내 1989 년 장벽이 무너지고 독일은 재통일의 기쁨을 맞았습니다.

바울은 예수님께서 허무신 “원수된 것 곧 중간에 막힌 담”에 대해 기록했습니다(에베소서 2:14). 이 담은 유대인(하나님의 선택된 백성들)과 이방인 (다른 모든 사람들) 사이에 존재한 것이었습니다. 헤롯 대왕이 예루살렘에 건축한 고대 성전에 있던 분리의 담이 이를 상징했습니다. 이 담은 이방인들이 안 뜰을 볼 수는 있어도 성전 바깥 뜰 너머로는 들어오지 못하게 막았습니다. 그러나 예수님은 유대인과 이방인 사이에, 그리고 하나님과 모든 사람들 사이에 “화평”과 화해를 가져오셨습니다. 예수님이 “십자가에서 죽으심으로 막힌 담을 허심으로” 그렇게 하신 것입니다(14, 16절). “평안의 좋은 소식”을 통해 모든 사람이 그리스도 안에서 믿음으로 하나가 될 수 있었습니다(17-18절).

오늘날 많은 것들이 우리를 갈라놓을 수 있습니다. 우리의 필요를 공급해 주시는 하나님을 힘입어 예수님 안에 있는 화평과 하나됨을 힘써 이루어 냅시다 (19-22절).

WALLS TORN DOWN, UNITY FOUND

Since 1961, families and friends had been separated by the Berlin Wall. Erected that year by the East German government, the barrier kept its citizens from fleeing to West Germany. In fact, from 1949 to the day the structure was built, it’s estimated that more than 2.5 million East Germans had bolted to the West. US President Ronald Reagan stood at the wall in 1987 and famously said, “Tear down this wall.” His words reflected a groundswell of change that culminated with the wall being torn down in 1989—leading to Germany’s joyous reunification.

In Ephesians 2:14, Paul wrote of a “wall of hostility” torn down by Jesus. The wall had existed between Jews (God’s chosen people) and gentiles (all other people). And it was symbolized by the dividing wall (the soreg) in the ancient temple erected by Herod the Great in Jerusalem. It kept gentiles from entering beyond the outer courts of the temple, though they could see the inner courts. But Jesus brought “peace” and reconciliation between the Jews and gentiles and between God and all people. He did so by “[breaking] down the wall . . . that separated us” by “his death on the cross” (VV. 14, 16 NLT). The “Good News of peace” made it possible for all to be united by faith in Christ (VV. 17–18 NLT).

Today, many things can divide us. As God provides what we need, let’s strive to live out the peace and unity found in Jesus (VV. 19–22).

소망의 빛

어머니의 반짝이는 빨간 십자가는 원래 암 센터의 어머니 침대 옆에 걸려 있어야 했습니다. 그리고 나는 어머니가 치료받는 날을 피해 공휴일 면회를 갈 준비를 하고 있어야 했습니다. 이번 크리스마스에 내가 단지 바랐던 것은 어머니와 하루라도 더 같이 있는 것이었습니다. 하지만 나는 그 대신 어머니의 십자가를 인조 크리스마스 트리에 걸어 놓고... 집에 있었습니다.

아들 제비어가 플러그를 꽂아 불을 켜는 순간 내 입에서 “고마워”라는 말이 조용히 나왔습니다. 아들이 “뭘요”라고 했습니다. 아이는 내가 깜박이는 전구를 통해 영원한 소망의 빛이신 예수님께로 나의 눈을 돌리게 하신 하나님께 감사드린 것을 알지 못했습니다.

시편 42편 기자는 자신의 솔직한 감정을 하나님께 표현했습니다(1-4절). 그는 “낙심하고” “불안해하는” 자신의 영혼에 대해 먼저 말한 다음, 사람들에게 “너는 하나님께 소망을 두라 나는 그가 나타나 도우심으로 말미암아 내 하나님을 여전히 찬송하리로다”(5절)라고 격려했습니다. 슬픔과 고통이 몰려와 그를 뒤덮었어도, 시편 기자는 지난 날 하나님의 신실하심을 기억하며 소망의 빛을 발했습니다(6-10절). 그는 자신의 의구심에 질문을 던지고 또 새롭게 회복된 믿음을 확인하면서 이렇게 끝을 맺습니다. “내 영혼아 네가 어찌하여 낙심하며 어찌하여 내 속에서 불안해하는가 너는 하나님께 소망을 두라 나는 그가 나타나 도우심으로 말미암아 내 하나님을 여전히 찬송하리로다”(11절).

THE LIGHT OF HOPE

My mother’s shiny red cross should have been hanging next to her bed at the cancer care center. And I should have been preparing for holiday visits between her scheduled treatments. All I wanted for Christmas was another day with my mom. Instead, I was home . . . hanging her cross on a fake tree.

When my son Xavier plugged in the lights, I whispered, “Thank You.” He said, “You’re welcome.” My son didn’t know I was thanking God for using the flickering bulbs to turn my eyes toward the ever-enduring Light of Hope—Jesus.

The writer of Psalm 42 expressed his raw emotions to God (VV. 1–4). He acknowledged his “downcast” and “disturbed” soul before encouraging readers: “Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God” (V. 5). Though he was overcome with waves of sorrow and suffering, the psalmist’s hope shone through the remembrance of God’s past faithfulness (VV. 6–10). He ended by questioning his doubts and affirming the resilience of his refined faith: “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God” (V. 11).

For many of us, the Christmas season stirs up both joy and sorrow. Thankfully, even these mixed emotions can be reconciled and redeemed through the promises of the true Light of HopeJesus.

용서하고 잊어버림

질 프라이스는 자기가 겪어온 모든 일을 놀랍도록 자세히 기억할 수 있는 과잉기억 증후군을 가지고 태어났습니다. 질은 평생 겪은 일들을 마음 속에 정확히 되돌려 볼 수 있습니다.

‘언포게터블’이라는 텔레비전 쇼에는 과잉기억 증후군을 가진 한 여성 경찰관이 나오는데, 상식 퀴즈게임이나 범죄 해결에 이 증후군이 큰 장점으로 작용했습니다. 그러나 질 프라이스에게 이 증후군은 그리 유쾌하지 않았습니다. 질은 살면서 비판을 받거나, 사랑하는 사람이 죽거나, 크게 후회할 일을 했던 순간들을 잊지 못하고, 그 장면들을 계속해서 머리 속에 떠올립니다.

하나님은 모든 것을 아십니다(어쩌면 일종의 신성한 과잉기억 증후군). 성경은 우리에게 하나님의 지각에는 한계가 없다고 말합니다. 그럼에도 우리는 이사야서에서 크게 안심이 되는 구절을 봅니다. “나 곧 나는... 네 허물을 도말하는 자니 네 죄를 기억하지 아니하리라”(43:25). 히브리서는 이것을 다시 강조합니다. “예수 그리스도로... 말미암아 우리가 거룩함을 얻었노라... [우리의] 죄와 [우리의] 불법을 [하나님께서] 다시 기억하지 아니하리라” (히브리서 10:10, 17).

FORGIVENESS AND FORGETTING

Jill Price was born with the condition of hyperthymesia: the ability to remember in extraordinary detail everything that ever happened to her. She can replay in her mind the exact occurrence of any event she’s experienced in her lifetime.

The TV show Unforgettable was premised on a female police officer with hyperthymesia—to her a great advantage in trivia games and in solving crimes. For Jill Price, however, the condition isn’t so much fun. She can’t forget the moments of life when she was criticized, experienced loss, or did something she deeply regretted. She replays those scenes in her head over and over again.

Our God is omniscient (perhaps a kind of divine hyperthymesia): the Bible tells us that His understanding has no limit. And yet we discover in Isaiah a most reassuring thing: “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions . . . and remembers your sins no more” (43:25). The book of Hebrews reinforces this: “We have been made holy through . . . Jesus Christ . . . [and our] sins and lawless acts [God] will remember no more” (HEBREWS 10:10, 17).

As we confess our sins to God, we can stop playing them over and over in our minds. We need to let them go, just as He does: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past” (ISAIAH 43:18). In His great love, God chooses to not remember our sins against us. Let’s remember that.
