기꺼이 자신을 내어주신 구세주

니콜라스는 밤늦게 운전하다가 화재가 난 집을 발견했습니다. 집 앞에 차를 세우고 불타는 집 안으로 달려들어가 먼저 어린아이 네 명을 구해냈습니다. 그때 아이들을 돌보던 십대가 아직 아이 하나가 집 안에 남아있다고 니콜라스에게 말했습니다. 그는 망설임없이 다시 불길 속으로 들어갔습니다. 니콜라스는 여섯 살 소녀와 함께 2층에 갇혀 있다가 창문을 깨부수고는 아이를 안고 밖으로 안전하게 뛰어내렸습니다. 바로 그때 소방대원들이 현장에 도착했습니다. 자신보다 이웃의 안위를 우선한 그는 결국 모든 아이들을 구해낸 것입니다.

니콜라스는 다른 이들을 위해 기꺼이 자신의 안전을 희생하는 영웅적인 모습을 보여주었습니다. 이 대단한 사랑의 행동은 죄와 사망에서 우리를 기꺼이 구원해 주신 예수님의 희생적인 사랑을 떠올려줍니다. “우리가 아직 연약할 때에 기약대로 그리스도께서 경건하지 않은 자를 위하여 죽으셨도다”(로마서 5:6). 바울 사도는 육신을 입으신 하나님이시며 완전한 사람이신 예수님이 우리가 결코 갚을 수 없는 우리 죄의 대가를 치르기 위해 자신의 생명을 내어주시기로 ‘선택하셨다’고 강조했습니다. “우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라”(8절).

기꺼이 자신을 내어주신 우리 구주 예수님께 감사하고 그분을 신뢰하면, 주님은 우리에게 말과 행동으로 희생하며 사랑할 수 있는 힘을 주십니다.

WILLING SAVIOR

While driving late at night, Nicholas saw a house on fire. He parked in the driveway, rushed into the burning home, and led four children to safety. When the teenage babysitter realized one of the siblings was still inside, she told Nicholas. Without hesitation, he reentered the inferno. Trapped on the second floor with the six-year-old girl, Nicholas broke a window. He jumped to safety with the child in his arms, just as emergency teams arrived at the scene. Choosing concern for others over himself, he rescued all the children.

Nicholas demonstrated heroism by his willingness to sacrifice his safety for the sake of others. This powerful act of love reflects the kind of sacrificial love shown by another willing rescuer who gave His life to deliver us from sin and death—Jesus. “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly” (ROMANS 5:6). The apostle Paul emphasized that Jesus—fully God in the flesh and fully man—chose to lay His life down and pay the price for our sins, a price we could never pay on our own. “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (V. 8).

As we thank and trust Jesus, our willing Savior, He can empower us to love others sacrificially with our words and actions.

하나님이 주시는 회복이 필요한 상태

친구가 아주 놀라운 사진들을 문자 메시지로 보내주었습니다! 그것들은 친구의 아내를 위한 깜짝 선물로 복원된 1965년식 포드 머스탱 자동차 사진들이었습니다. 진청색의 눈부신 외관, 반짝이는 크롬 테두리, 새로 천을 씌운 검은색 내장, 그리고 이 모든 업그레이드에 걸맞게 새 엔진까지 탑재되었습니다. 그 차가 복원되기 “이전의” 사진들도 있었는데 둔탁해 보이고 낡고 색이 바래 누런 차였습니다. 상상하기 쉽진 않지만 아마 그 차가 공장에서 막 출고되었을 당시에는 시선을 사로잡는 멋진 차였을 것입니다. 하지만 긴 세월 마모되고 손상되는 등, 여러 요인으로 복원이 필요한 상태가 되었던 것입니다.

회복이 필요한 상태! 시편 80편에 등장하는 하나님의 백성들이 바로 그런 상태였고, 그래서 그들은 이런 기도를 계속해서 드렸습니다. “하나님이여 우리를 돌이키시고 주의 얼굴빛을 비추사 우리가 구원을 얻게 하소서”(3절; 7, 19절 참조). 그들은 이전에 애굽에서 구출되어 풍요로운 땅을 얻게 되었지만 (8-11절) 좋은 시절은 이미 가버렸으며, 그들의 반항 때문에 하나님의 심판을 경험하기도 했습니다(12-13절). 결국 그들은 이렇게 간청합니다. “전능하신 하나님이시여, 우리에게 돌이키소서. 하늘에서 굽어 살피소서”(14절, 현대인의 성경).

하나님과의 관계가 무뎌지거나 멀어지고 단절된 느낌이 듭니까? 영적 만족과 기쁨이 없습니까? 혹 그 이유가 예수님과 그분의 뜻에서 벗어나 있기 때문이 아닙니까? 하나님은 관계 회복을 바라는 우리의 기도를 들으십니다 (1절). 무엇이 기도하지 못하도록 계속 막고 있습니까?

RIPE FOR GOD’S RESTORATION

The pictures coming from a friend’s text stream were stunning! Photos of a surprise gift for his wife revealed a restored 1965 Ford Mustang: brilliant, dark blue exterior; sparkling chrome rims; reupholstered black interior; and a motor to match the other upgrades. There were also “before” pictures of the
same vehicle—a dull, worn, unimpressive yellow version. While it may be difficult to envision, it’s likely that when the vehicle rolled off the assembly line, it was also an eye-catcher. But time, wear and tear, and other factors had made it ripe for restoration.

Ripe for restoration! Such was the condition of God’s people in Psalm 80 and thus the repeated prayer: “Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved” (V. 3; SEE VV. 7, 19). Though their history had included rescue from Egypt and being planted in a land of plenty (VV. 8–11), the good times had come and gone. Because of rebellion, they were experiencing the hand of God’s judgment (VV. 12–13). Thus, their plea: “Return to us, God Almighty! Look down from heaven and see!” (V. 14).

Do you ever feel dull, distant, or disconnected from God? Is joyful soul-satisfaction missing? Is it because alignment with Jesus and His purposes is missing? God hears our prayers for restoration (V. 1). What’s keeping you from asking?

몰약의 의미

오늘은 “동방박사 세 사람”이라는 성탄절 찬송가 가사처럼 동방박사들이 아기 예수를 방문했을 때를 기념하는 주현절입니다. 그러나 사실 그들은 왕이 아니었고 동쪽 끝(동방의 고전적 의미)에서 온 것도 아니었으며, 아마 세 사람도 아니었을 것입니다.

하지만 세 가지 선물이 있었고, 찬송가는 그것을 하나씩 이야기합니다. 동방박사들은 베들레헴에 도착하여 “보배합을 열어 황금과 유향과 몰약을 예물로 [예수님께] 드렸습니다”(마태복음 2:11). 그 선물들은 예수님이 이 세상에서 하실 사역을 상징합니다. 황금은 왕으로 오신 예수님을 나타냅니다. 성소에서 향과 함께 섞어 피우는 유향은 예수님의 하나님 되심을 말합니다. 그런데 방부 처리를 위해 시신에 바르는 몰약은 우리의 생각을 멈추게 합니다.

찬송가 마지막 절은 이 세 가지 주제를 하나로 엮습니다. “다시 사신 구주님/ 왕의 왕이 되시네.” 그렇게 크리스마스 이야기를 완성하면서 우리의 반응을 이끌어냅니다. “할렐루야 할렐루야 모두 다 부르세.”

THE MEANING OF MYRRH

Today is Epiphany, the day which commemorates the event described by the carol “We Three Kings of Orient Are” when gentile wisemen visited the child Jesus. Yet they weren’t kings, they weren’t from the Far East (as Orient formerly meant), and it’s unlikely there were three of them.

There were, however, three gifts, and the carol considers each. When the magi arrived in Bethlehem, “They opened their treasures and presented [Jesus] with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh” (MATTHEW 2:11). The gifts symbolize Jesus’ mission. Gold represents His role as King. Frankincense, mixed with the incense burned in the sanctuary, speaks of His deity. Myrrh, used to embalm dead bodies, gives us pause.

The fourth verse of the carol says, “Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume / breathes a life of gathering gloom; / sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, / sealed in the stone-cold tomb.” We wouldn’t write such a scene into the story, but God did. Jesus’ death is central to our salvation. Herod even attempted to kill Jesus while He was yet a child (V. 13).

The carol’s last verse weaves the three themes together: “Glorious now behold him arise; / King and God and sacrifice.” This completes the story of Christmas, inspiring our response: “Alleluia, Alleluia, / sounds through the earth and skies.”

갈림길에서 인도하시는 하나님

남편이 며칠 동안 아프다가 열까지 심하게 나자 결국 응급치료를 받으러 갔는데 병원에 바로 입원하게 되었습니다. 하루 하루 지나며 조금씩 나아지기는 했지만 퇴원할 정도까지는 아니었습니다. 나는 남편 곁에 머물러야 할지, 아니면 많은 사람들이 관련된 프로젝트를 위해 중요한 출장을 떠나야 할지 어려운 선택을 해야만 했습니다. 남편은 괜찮아질 거라고 하면서 나를 안심시켜 주었습니다. 하지만 나는 남편과 일 사이에서 어찌할 바를 몰라 마음이 아팠습니다.

하나님의 백성들은 인생의 중대한 결정을 하는 갈림길에서 하나님의 도움이 필요했습니다. 하지만 그들은 너무나 자주 하나님이 가르쳐주신 지시에 따르지 않았습니다. 그래서 모세는 백성들에게 하나님의 명령을 따름으로써 “생명을 택하라”(신명기 30:19)고 간청했습니다. 훗날 예레미야 선지자는 고집스러운 백성들에게 “너희는 길에 서서 보며 옛적 길 곧 선한 길이 어디인지 알아보고 그리로 가라”(예레미야 6:16)고 충고하며 하나님의 길을 따르라고 설득했습니다. 성경말씀과 과거에 하나님이 공급해주신 일 등, 그런 옛적 길들이 우리를 인도해줄 수 있습니다.

나는 실제 갈림길에 서 있는 내 모습을 상상하며 예레미야가 전한 지혜의 지침을 적용해 보았습니다. 남편과 일, 모두 나를 필요로 했습니다. 바로 그때 직장 상사가 전화를 하여 나더러 집에 있으라고 권했습니다. 나는 안도의 숨을 내쉬며 갈림길에서 인도해주신 하나님께 감사드렸습니다. 하나님의 인도하심이 항상 알기 쉽게 오는 것은 아니지만 반드시 옵니다. 갈림길에 서게 될 때 반드시 하나님을 찾도록 합시다.

GOD AT THE CROSSROADS

After days of illness and then spiking a high temperature, it was clear my husband needed emergency care. The hospital admitted him immediately. One day folded into the next. He improved, but not enough to be released. I faced the difficult choice to stay with my husband or fulfill an important work trip where many people and projects were involved. My husband assured me he’d be fine. But my heart was torn between him and my work.

God’s people needed His help at the crossroads of life’s decisions. Far too often, they hadn’t adhered to His revealed instructions. So Moses implored the people to “choose life” by following His commands (DEUTERONOMY 30:19). Later, the prophet Jeremiah offered words of direction to God’s wayward people, wooing them to follow His ways: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it” (JEREMIAH 6:16). The ancient paths of Scripture and God’s past provision can direct us.

I imagined myself at a physical crossroads and applied Jeremiah’s template of wisdom. My husband needed me. So did my work. Just then, my supervisor called and encouraged me to remain home. I drew a breath and thanked God for His provision at the crossroads. God’s direction doesn’t always come so clearly, but it does come. When we stand at the crossroads, let’s make sure to look for Him.

그리스도 안에서 조용히 성실하게

처음에는 그 사람이 눈에 띄지 않았습니다.

호텔에서 아침 식사를 하려고 내려왔는데 식당 안이 아주 깨끗 했습니다. 뷔페 테이블에는 갖가지 음식이 가득했습니다. 냉장고는 잘 채워져 있었고 식사 도구함도 종류별로 잘 정돈되어 있었습니다. 모든 것이 완벽했습니다.

그때 그 사람을 보았습니다. 한 겸손한 남자가 이것저것 음식을 채우고 여기저기 닦고 있었습니다. 그는 사람들 눈에 띄지 않게 일을 했지만, 자리에 앉아 머물러 있을수록 놀라움은 더 커져 갔습니다. 그는 일을 매우 빨리 처리하면서 모든 상황을 파악하고는 무언가 더 필요할 것 같으면 바로 음식을 채웠습니다. 나도 음식 서비스를 오래 했었기 때문에 계속해서 세심한 것들에 집중하는 그의 모습이 눈에 들어온 것입니다. 대부분의 손님들은 알아차리지 못했지만, 이 식당은 그의 충실한 일처리 때문에 모든 것이 완벽했습니다.

아주 꼼꼼하게 일하는 그 사람을 보면서 나는 바울이 데살로니가 성도들에게 한 말이 떠올랐습니다. “우리가 여러분에게 명령한 것처럼 조용한 생활을 하고 남의 일에 간섭하지 말며 손수 일하도록 하십시오. 그러면 불신자들에게 존경을 받을 것입니다”(데살로니가전서 4:11-12, 현대인의 성경). 바울은 충실한 일꾼이 어떻게 사람들의 존경을 받을 수 있는지를 알았으며, 다른 사람들을 위해 하는 작아 보이는 봉사도 복음이 어떻게 거기에 존엄성과 목적을 부여하는지를 조용히 증언헀습니다.

그날 본 남자가 예수님을 믿는 사람인지는 알지 못합니다. 하지만 소리 없이 근면하게 일하는 그의 모습을 보며, 조용히 성실하게 살면서 하나님의 신실하심을 드러내기 위해 하나님을 의지해야 한다는 것을 다시 깨닫게 되어 감사합니다.

QUIET FAITHFULNESS IN CHRIST

I didn’t notice him at first.

I’d come down for breakfast at my hotel. Everything in the dining room was clean. The buffet table was filled. The refrigerator was stocked, the utensil container packed tight. Everything was perfect.

Then I saw him. An unassuming man refilled this, wiped that. He didn’t draw attention to himself. But the longer I sat, the more I was amazed. The man was working very fast, noticing everything, and refilling everything before anyone might need something. As a food service veteran, I noticed his constant attention to detail. Everything was perfect because this man was working faithfully—even if few noticed.

Watching this man work so meticulously, I recalled Paul’s words to the Thessalonians: “Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands . . . so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders” (1 THESSALONIANS 4:11–12). Paul understood how a faithful worker might win others’ respect—offering a quiet testimony to how the gospel can infuse even seemingly small acts of service for others with dignity and purpose.

I don’t know if the man I saw that day was a believer in Jesus. But I’m grateful his quiet diligence reminded me to rely on God to live out a quiet faithfulness that reflects His faithful ways.

해양학자 실비아 얼은 바다의 산호초가 죽어가는 현장을 직접 보아 왔습니다. 그녀는 ‘미션 블루’라는 기관을 설립하여 지구상의 “희망 지점들”을 찾아 그곳을 개발하는 일에 힘쓰고 있습니다. 이렇게 세계
곳곳에서 찾아낸 특별한 장소들은 “해양 건강에 필수적”이며, 지구상의 우리의 삶에도 영향을 미칩니다. 과학자들은 이 지역들을 의도적으로 돌보면서 해양 공동체의 관계가 복원되는 것과 멸종 위기에 처한 생물들이 보존되는 것을 관찰하고 있습니다.

구름 낀 회색 하늘을 가로지르는 무지개의 속삭임을 듣거나 해안의 바위에 부서지는 대양의 눈부신 파도를 보면서 하나님을 찬양할 때마다, 우리는 하나님께 “희망을 두면” 하나님이 “한결같은 사랑”으로 우리와 함께하신다는 것을 분명히 선포할 수 있습니다(22절, 현대인의 성경).

우리가 이 세상의 현재 상태를 보며 낙심하거나 두려움에 빠져 우리가 할 수 있는 것은 아무것도 없다고 생각할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 하나님의 돌봄 사역의 일원으로 동참할 때, 창조주 하나님을 높이며 다른 사람들이 예수님을 믿고 희망을 찾을 수 있도록 도와줄 수 있습니다.

SPOTTING HOPE

Oceanographer Sylvia Earle has seen the deterioration of coral reefs firsthand. She founded Mission Blue, an organization devoted to the development of global “hope spots.” These special places around the world are “critical to the health of the ocean,” which impacts our lives on earth. Through the intentional care for these areas, scientists have seen the relationships of underwater communities restored and lives of endangered species preserved.

In Psalm 33, the psalmist acknowledges that God spoke everything into existence and ensured that all He made would stand firm (VV. 6–9). As God reigns over generations and nations (VV. 11–19), He alone restores relationships, saves lives, and revitalizes hope. However, God invites us to join Him in caring for the world and the people He created.

Each time we praise God for the whisper of a rainbow splashed across a clouded, gray sky or the glistening waves of the ocean crashing against a rocky shore, we can proclaim His “unfailing love” and presence as we “put our hope” in Him (V. 22).

When we’re tempted toward discouragement or fear as we consider the current state of the world, we may begin to believe we can’t make a difference. When we do our part as members of God’s care team, however, we can honor Him as the Creator and help others spot hope as they place their trust in Jesus.

어네스트 헤밍웨이의 첫 장편소설을 보면 제1차 세계대전을 막 겪은 술꾼 친구들이 등장합니다. 그들은 참혹한 전쟁의 육체적, 정신적 상처를 파티와 무모한 행동, 그리고 난잡한 성생활로 이겨내려 애쓰면서, 고통을 잊기 위해 항상 술을 마십니다. 하지만 그 누구도 행복하지 않습니다.

헤밍웨이의 소설과 전도서는 이 땅에서의 삶이 얼마나 허무한지 깨닫게 해줍니다. 그런데 솔로몬은 전도서 안에서 하나님의 찬란한 계시를 담아냅니다. 바로 영원과 참소망입니다. 전도서는 우리의 참모습뿐만 아니라 하나님의 모습도 그대로 보여줍니다. 솔로몬은 “하나님께서 행하시는 모든 것은 영원히 있을 것이라”고 했는데(3:14), 거기에 우리의 큰 소망이 담겨있습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서 우리에게 그분의 아들 예수님을 선물로 주셨기 때문입니다.

하나님을 떠나면 우리는 채워지지 않는 끝없는 바다에서 표류하게 됩니다. 그러나 부활하신 하나님의 아들 예수님을 통해 우리는 하나님과 화해하고, 우리의 의미와 가치, 그리고 목적을 발견할 수 있습니다.

THE SON ALSO RISES

Ernest Hemingway’s first full-length novel features hard drinking friends who’ve recently endured World War I. They bear the literal and figurative scars of the war’s devastation and try to cope with it via parties, grand adventures, and sleeping around. Always, there is alcohol to numb the pain. No one is happy.

Hemingway’s title for his book The Sun Also Rises comes straight from the pages of Ecclesiastes (1:5). In Ecclesiastes, King Solomon refers to himself as “the Teacher” (V. 1). He observes, “Everything is meaningless” (V. 2) and asks, “What do people gain from all their labors?” (V. 3). Solomon saw how the sun rises and sets, the wind blows to and from, the rivers flow endlessly into a never satisfied sea (VV. 5–7). Ultimately, all is forgotten (V. 11).

Both Hemingway and Ecclesiastes confront us with the stark futility of living for this life only. Solomon, however, weaves bright hints of the divine into his book. There is permanence—and real hope. Ecclesiastes shows us as we truly are, but it also shows God as He is. “Everything God does will endure forever,” said Solomon (3:14), and therein lies our great hope. For God has given us the gift of His Son, Jesus.

Apart from God, we’re adrift in an endless, never satisfied sea. Through His risen Son, Jesus, we’re reconciled to Him, and we discover our meaning, value, and purpose.

예수님 안에서의 새로운 나

“저는 예전의 제가 아닙니다. 이제 새로운 사람이에요.” 내 아들이 학교 집회에서 고백한 이 짧은 말은 하나님께서 그의 삶에 베푸신 변화를 말해주고 있습니다. 한 때 헤로인 중독자였던 아들 제프리는 과거에는 죄와 실수가 가득한 모습으로의 자신의 모습을 보았지만, 지금은 하나님의 자녀로서의 자신의 모습을 보고 있습니다.

성경은 다음과 같은 약속으로 우리를 격려해 줍니다. “누구든지 그리스도 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물이라 이전 것은 지나갔으니 보라 새것이 되었도다” (고린도후서 5:17). 우리가 누구였었고 과거에 무엇을 했든, 예수님을 믿음으로 구원받고 주님의 십자가를 통해 용서받으면 우리는 새로운 사람이 됩니다. 에덴동산 이후로 죄는 우리를 하나님으로부터 분리시켰지만, 하나님은 “그리스도로 말미암아 우리를 자기와 화목하게 하시고” 우리의 죄를 우리에게 “돌리지 않으셨습니다”(18-19절). 우리는 하나님의 깊은 사랑을 받는 자녀이며 (요한1서 3:1-2), 깨끗함을 입고 예수님을 닮은 모습으로 새롭게 변화되었습니다.

예수님은 죄와 죄의 권세에서 우리를 해방시키시고 하나님과 새로운 관계를 맺도록 회복시키십니다. 그럼으로써 우리는 더 이상 자신을 위해 살지 않고 “[우리를] 대신하여 죽었다가 다시 살아나신 이를 위하여”(고린도후서 5:15) 살게 됩니다. 새해 첫 날에, 우리를 변화시키는 주님의 사랑이 우리에게 새로운 정체성과 목적을 가지고 살도록 강권하신다는 것을 기억합시다. 그렇게 삶으로써 우리는 다른 사람들 또한 새로운 사람들로 만드실 수 있는 우리 구주께로 그들을 인도할 수 있습니다!

NEW IDENTITY IN JESUS

“I’m not who I once was. I’m a new person.” Those simple words from my son, spoken to students at a school assembly, describe the change God made in his life. Once addicted to heroin, Geoffrey previously saw himself through his sins and mistakes. But now he sees himself as a child of God.

The Bible encourages us with this promise: “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17). No matter who we’ve been or what we’ve done in our past, when we trust Jesus for our salvation and receive the forgiveness offered through His cross, we become someone new. Since the garden of Eden, the guilt of our sins has separated us from God, but He has now “reconciled us to himself through Christ,” “not counting” our sins against us (VV. 18–19). We are His dearly loved children (1 JOHN 3:1–2), washed clean and made new in the likeness of His Son.

Jesus liberates us from sin and its dominating power and restores us into a new relationship with God—where we’re free to no longer live for ourselves but “for him who died for [us] and was raised again” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:15). On this New Year’s Day, let’s remember that His transforming love compels us to live with new identity and purpose. It helps us point others to our Savior, the One who can make them new people too!

의로운 도시

2000년 새해 전날 밤 디트로이트시 직원들이 100년 전의 타임캡슐을 조심스럽게 개봉했습니다. 그 구리 상자 안에는 미래의 번영을 염원한 도시 지도자들의 희망찬 예측이 담겨 있었습니다. 그런데 시장의 메시지는 조금 달랐습니다. “우리가 무엇보다 가장 바라는 희망 한 가지를 말하라면... 여러분이 한 국가, 한 민족, 한 도시로서 의롭게 성장하였기를 바랍니다. 한 나라의 품격을 세우는 것은 바로 의로움이기 때문입니다.”

시장은 성공이나 행복, 평화보다도 후대 시민들이 진정한 정의와 올바름 안에서 성장하기를 기원했던 것입니다. 그는 아마도 의에 주린 사람이 복이 있다고 하신 예수님으로부터 힌트를 얻었던 것 같습니다(마태복음 5:6). 그러나 하나님의 완벽한 기준을 고려해 보면 쉽게 낙심만 될 뿐입니다.

우리의 성장이 노력한다고 얻어지는 게 아니라는 사실에 하나님께 찬양을 드립니다. 히브리서 저자는 그것을 이렇게 말합니다. “평강의 하나님이 모든 선한 일에 너희를 온전하게 하사 자기 뜻을 행하게 하시고 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 그 앞에 즐거운 것을 우리 가운데서 이루시기를 원하노라”(히브리서 13:20-21). 그리스도 안에 있는 우리는 주님을 믿는 순간 그분의 피로 거룩해지지만(12절), 그리스도께서 우리 평생에 걸쳐 우리 마음 속에 의의 열매를 맺게 해주십니다. 그 길을 가는 동안 자주 넘어지기도 하겠지만, 우리는 하나님의 의가 다스릴 “장차 올 도성”(14절)을 여전히 기대하며 바라봅니다.

THE RIGHTEOUS CITY

On New Year’s Eve 2000, officials in Detroit carefully opened a hundred-year-old time capsule. Nestled inside the copper box were hopeful predictions from some city leaders who expressed visions of prosperity. The mayor’s message, however, offered a different approach. He wrote, “May we be permitted to express one hope superior to all others . . . [that] you may realize as a nation, people, and city, you have grown in righteousness, for it is this that exalts a nation.”

More than success, happiness, or peace, the mayor wished that future citizens would grow in what it means to be truly just and upright. Perhaps he took his cue from Jesus, who blessed those who long for His righteousness (MATTHEW 5:6). But it’s easy to get discouraged when we consider God’s perfect standard.

Praise God that we don’t have to rely on our own effort to grow. The author of Hebrews said it this way: “May the God of peace . . . equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ” (HEBREWS 13:20–21). We who are in Christ are made holy by His blood the moment we believe in Him (V. 12), but He actively grows the fruit of righteousness in our hearts throughout a lifetime. We’ll often stumble on the journey, yet still we look forward to “the city that is to come” where God’s righteousness will reign (V. 14).

괴로운 마음, 정직한 기도

마틴 루터 킹 주니어 목사는 1957년 1월 폭탄으로 집이 흔들리는 일이 있기 사흘 전, 그의 남은 인생을 결정짓는 한 가지 일을 겪었습니다. 협박 전화 한 통을 받고 나서 그는 이제 인권운동에서 손을 뗄 방법을 고민하고 있었습니다. 그때 그의 마음속으로부터 기도가 흘러나왔습니다. “제가 옳다고 믿는 것을 위해 여기 서 있습니다. 그러나 지금 두렵습니다. 제게 남은 것이 없습니다. 이제는 혼자 맞설 수 없는 곳까지 왔습니다.” 기도를 마치자 조용한 확신이 찾아왔습니다. 킹 목사는 이렇게 말했습니다. “거의 즉시 나의 두려움이 사라지기 시작했다. 불확실한 것도 없어졌다. 이제 무엇이든 맞이할 준비가 되었다.”

요한복음 12장에서 예수님은 “내 마음이 괴롭다”(27절)고 시인하셨습니다. 예수님은 내면의 모습을 있는 그대로 보여주시면서도 여전히 하나님 중심의 기도를 드렸습니다. “아버지여, 아버지의 이름을 영광스럽게 하옵소서”(28절). 예수님의 기도는 하나님 뜻에 순종하는 기도였습니다.

하나님께 영광이 되도록 해야 할지 말지를 놓고 선택해야 할 때, 사람 관계나 습관, 해오던 방식(좋든지 나쁘든지)에 대해 지혜를 다해 어려운 결정을 내려야 할 때, 우리는 인간으로서 두려움과 불안의 고통을 피할 수가 없습니다. 그러나 무슨 일을 만나더라도 하나님께 담대히 기도하면, 하나님은 우리와 다른 사람들의 유익을 위해 두려움과 불안을 이기고 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있는 힘을 주실 것입니다.

TROUBLED SOULS, HONEST PRAYERS

Three days before a bomb blast rocked his home in January 1957, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had an encounter that marked him for the rest of his life. After receiving a threatening phone call, King found himself pondering an exit strategy from the civil rights movement. Then prayers emerged from his soul. “I am here taking a stand for what I believe is right. But now I am afraid. I have nothing left. I’ve come to the point where I can’t face it alone.” After his prayer, there came quiet assurance. King noted, “Almost at once my fears began to go. My uncertainty disappeared. I was ready to face anything.”

In John 12, Jesus acknowledged, “My soul is troubled” (V. 27). He was transparently honest about His internal disposition; still He was God-centered in His prayer. “Father, glorify your name!” (V. 28). Jesus’ prayer was one of surrender to God’s will.

How human it is for us to feel the pangs of fear and discomfort when we find ourselves with the option of honoring God or not; when wisdom requires making hard decisions about relationships, habits, or other patterns (good or bad). No matter what we’re faced with, as we pray boldly to God, He’ll give us the strength to overcome our fear and discomfort and do what brings glory to Him—for our good and the good of others.
