단잠

쌀의 머리 속엔 나쁜 기억들과 비난의 메시지가 가득했습니다. 가슴에는 두려운 마음이 가득했고 온 몸은 땀으로 범벅이 되어 잠을 이룰 수가 없었습니다. 세례식 전날 밤이었는데 끊임없이 어두운 생각들이 몰려왔습니다. 예수 그리스도를 통해 구원받았고 죄가 용서된 것도 알고 있었지만 샐의 영적 전투는 계속되었습니다. 그때 아내가 손을 잡고 그를 위해 기도해 주었습니다. 쌀의 마음 속에서 곧 두려움이 물러가고 평안이 찾아왔습니다. 그는 일어나서 세례를 받기 전에 나눌 글을 썼습니다. 이전에는 엄두도 못 낼 일이었습니다. 그러고 나서 그는 단잠을 잘 수 있었습니다.

다윗 왕도 그런 불안한 밤이 어떤 것인지 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그는 왕위를 노리는 아들 압살롬으로부터 도망치며(사무엘하 15-17) “천만 대군이 [그를 대적하여] 사방에 진을 치고 있는”(시편 3:6) 것을 알고 “나의 대적이 어찌 그리 많은지요”(1절)라고 탄식했습니다. 두려움과 의심으로 무너질 수도 있었던 다윗은 자신의 “방패”(3절)이신 하나님께 부르짖었습니다. 나중에 그는 “주님께서 [그를] 붙들어 주시기 때문에 누워 곤하게 잠들”(5절, 새번역) 수 있었습니다.

두려움과 고통이 우리 마음을 사로잡고 평안이 불안으로 바뀔 때 우리는 하나님께 기도함으로 소망을 가질 수 있습니다. 샐이나 다윗처럼 금방 단잠에 들지는 못하더라도, 우리는 “평안히 눕고 자며... 안전히 살”(4:8) 수 있습니다.
하나님이 우리와 함께하시며 우리의 안식이 되어 주시기 때문입니다.

SWEET SLEEP

Bad memories and accusing messages flooded Sal’s mind. Sleep eluded him as fear filled his heart and sweat covered his skin. It was the night before his baptism, and he couldn’t stop the onslaught of dark thoughts. Sal had received salvation in Jesus and knew that his sins had been forgiven, but the spiritual battle continued. It’s then that his wife took his hand and prayed for him. Moments later, peace replaced the fear in Sal’s heart. He got up and wrote the words he would share prior to being baptized—something he hadn’t been able to do. After that, he experienced sweet sleep.

King David also knew what a restless night felt like. Fleeing from his son Absalom who wanted to steal his throne (2 SAMUEL 15–17), he knew that “tens of thousands [assailed him] on every side” (PSALM 3:6). David moaned, “How many are my foes!” (V. 1). Though fear and doubt could have won out, he called out to God, his “shield” (V. 3). Later, he found that he could “lie down and sleep . . . because the Lord sustains [him]” (V. 5).

When fears and struggles grip our mind and rest is replaced by restlessness, hope is found as we pray to God. While we might not experience immediate sweet sleep as Sal and David did, “in peace [we can] lie down and . . . dwell in safety” (4:8). For God is with us and He’ll be our rest. - TOM FELTEN

행운이 아니라 그리스도께서

‘디스커버’ 매거진에 의하면 우주에는 7해(7 뒤에 0이 20개 붙는) 개의 행성이 있지만 지구와 같은 행성은 단 하나뿐이라고 합니다. 천체 물리학자 에릭 잭리슨에 의하면 생명을 유지할 수 있는 행성의 조건 중 하나는 온도가 딱 맞고 물이 존재할 수 있는 “최적 상태”의 궤도를 도는 것이라고 합니다. 7해 개의 행성 가운데 지구가 바로 그 조건에 맞는 행성으로 보입니다. 잭리슨의 결론은 지구가 어쨌든 “운이 꽤 좋았다”는 것입니다.

바울은 골로새 신자들에게 우주가 존재하는 것은 행운의 여신 때문이 아니라 예수님이 역사하셨기 때문이라는 것을 확실히 했습니다. 바울 사도는 “만물이 그에게서 창조되었다”(골로새서 1:16)고 하며 그리스도께서 세상의 창조주라고 말합니다. 예수님은 세상을 창조하신 능력의 창조주일 뿐 아니라, 바울의 말처럼 “만물이 그 안에 함께 서 있어서”(17절) 이 세상이 너무 덥지도 너무 춥지도 않게 인간이 존재하기에 꼭 알맞은 곳이 된 것입니다. 예수님은 자신이 창조하신 세상을 그의 완벽한 지혜와 끊이지 않는 능력으로 유지하고 계십니다.

창조의 아름다움에 참여하여 그것을 누리고 있는 우리는, 그것이 행운의 여신이 아무렇게나 만든 것이 아니라 “[하나님의] 모든 충만”(19절)을 소유하신 그리스도께서 목적을 가지고, 주권적으로, 권능과 사랑으로 만드신 것이라고
전하도록 합시다.

NOT LUCK, BUT CHRIST

Discover magazine suggests that there are around 700 quintillion (7 followed by 20 zeros) planets in the universe, but only one like Earth. Astrophysicist Erik Zackrisson said that one of the requirements for a planet to sustain life is to orbit in the “Goldilocks” zone, where the temperature is just right, and water can exist. Out of 700 quintillion planets, Earth seems to be one planet where conditions are just right. Zackrisson concluded that Earth somehow had been dealt a “fairly lucky hand.”

Paul assured the Colossian believers that the universe existed, not because of Lady Luck, but because of the work of Jesus. The apostle presents Christ as the creator of the world: “For in him all things were created” (COLOSSIANS 1:16). Not only was Jesus the powerful creator of the world, but Paul says that “in him all things hold together” (V. 17)—a world that’s not too hot and not too cold, but one that’s just right for human existence. What Jesus created, He’s sustaining with His perfect wisdom and unceasing power.

As we participate in and enjoy the beauty of creation, let’s choose not to point to the random activity of Lady Luck, but to the purposeful, sovereign, powerful and loving One who possesses “all [God’s] fullness” (V. 19). - MARVIN WILLIAMS

함께 하는게 더 낫다

쇠렌 솔케는 여러 해 동안 찌르레기의 사진을 찍으며 수십 만 마리의 새가 하늘에서 물결치듯 군무를 펼치는 놀라운 광경을 담아냈습니다. 이 경이로운 모습은 마치 지휘에 맞춰 파도타기를 하는 모습이나, 거대한 검은 붓 놀림으로 만화경의 패턴이 그려지는 것을 올려다보는 것 같기도 합니다. 덴마크에서는 이 찌르레기가 펼치는 광경을 “검은 해”(솔케의 멋진 사진집의 제목)라고 부릅니다. 가장 주목할 사실은 찌르레기가 본능적으로 가장 가까운 짝 뒤에 바짝 붙어 날기 때문에 어느 한 마리라도 삐끗하게 되면 커다란 재앙으로 변한다는 것입니다. 그럼에도 찌르레기는 서로를 보호하려고 무리를 이룹니다. 매가 내려오면 이 작은 새들은 서로 빽빽한 대형을 이루어 단체로 움직이면서 혼자라면 쉽게 채어갈 수 있는 포식자를 물리칩니다.

우리는 혼자보다는 함께 있을 때가 더 낫습니다. 전도서는 “두 사람이 한 사람보다 나음은... 혹시 그들이 넘어지면 하나가 그 동무를 일으키려니와... 또 두 사람이 함께 누우면 따뜻하다”(4:9-11)고 말합니다. 혼자 있으면 동떨어져 쉽게 먹잇감이 됩니다. 다른 사람들의 위안과 보호를 못 받는 상태에 놓입니다.

그러나 동료가 있으면 서로 도움을 주고 또 받을 수 있습니다. 전도서는 말합니다. “한 사람이면 패하겠거니와 두 사람이면 맞설 수 있나니 세 겹 줄은 쉽게 끊어지지 아니하느니라”(12절). 하나님의 인도하심을 따라 함께 하는 것이 더 낫습니다.

BETTER TOGETHER

Søren Solkær spent years photographing starlings and their breathtaking spectacle: murmurations, where hundreds of thousands of starlings move in fluid motion across the sky. Watching this marvel is like sitting underneath an orchestrated, swirling wave or a massive, dark brushstroke flowing into a kaleidoscope of patterns. In Denmark, they call this starling experience Black Sun (also the title of Solkær’s stunning book of photographs). Most remarkable is how starlings instinctively follow their nearest companion, flying so close that if one were to miss a beat, they’d suffer mass calamity. However, starlings use murmurations to protect one another. When a hawk descends, these tiny creatures enter tight formation and move collectively, beating back a predator who’d easily pick them off if they were alone.

We’re better together than we are alone. “Two are better than one,” Ecclesiastes says. “If either . . . falls down, one can help the other up. [And] if two lie down together, they will keep warm” (4:9–11). Alone, we’re isolated and easy prey. We’re exposed without the comfort or protection of others.

But with companions, we give and receive help. “Though one may be overpowered,” Ecclesiastes says, “two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (V. 12). We’re better together as God leads us. - WINN COLLIER

나그네를 대접하라

다니엘 네이에리는 ‘모든 슬픈 것은 사실이 아니다’라는 책에서, 박해를 피해 난민 캠프를 거쳐 미국으로 안전하게 도착할 때까지 어머니와 여동생과 함께 겪었던 끔찍한 여정을 그리고 있습니다. 그 과정에서 한 번도 만난 적이 없는 어느 한 노부부가 그들을 후원해 주기로 했습니다. 다니엘은 여러 해가 지난 지금도 그때 일을 잊지 못합니다. 그는 이렇게 쓰고 있습니다. “이게 믿어집니까? 그분들은 우리를 전혀 모르는 상태에서 후원했습니다. 우리를 만난 적도 없고, 우리가 혹 나쁜 사람들이었다면 그 대가를 다 치러야 했을텐데도 말입니다. 그렇게 무모할 정도로 용감하고 친절한 분들은 세상에 다시 없을 것입니다.”

그런데 하나님은 우리가 다른 사람들에게 그 정도까지 관심을 갖기를 바라십니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들에게 외국인을 잘 대접하라고 말씀하셨습니다. “거류민을... 자기 같이 사랑하라 너희도 애굽 땅에서 거류민이 되었었느니라”(레위기 19:34). 하나님은 우리 같은 예수님을 믿는 이방인들에게 한때 “그리스도 밖에 있었고... 약속의 언약들에 대하여는 외인이요 세상에서 소망이 없고 하나님도 없는 자”(에베소서 2:12)였다는 사실을 상기시켜 주십니다. 그래서 하나님은 유대인과 이방인, 또 전에 외국인이었던 우리 모두에게 “나그네를 대접하기를 잊지 말라”(히브리서 13:2, 현대인의 성경)고 명령하십니다.

이제 어른이 되어 자신의 가족을 거느리게 된 다니엘은 “너무나도 그리스도인답게 난민 가족을 집에 데려다 살 집을 구할 때까지 함께 살게 해 준” 짐과 진 도슨 부부를 칭송합니다. 이방인을 환대하시는 하나님은 우리에게도 그렇게 하라고 하십니다.

WELCOME THE STRANGER

In Everything Sad Is Untrue, Daniel Nayeri describes his harrowing flight with his mother and sister from persecution through a refugee camp to safety in the United States. An elderly couple agreed to sponsor them, though they didn’t know them. Years later, Daniel still can’t get over it. He writes, “Can you believe that? Totally blind, they did that. They’d never even met us. And if we turned out to be villains, they’d have to pay for it. That’s almost as brave, kind, and reckless as I can think of anybody being.”

Yet God desires us to have that level of concern for others. He told Israel to be kind to foreigners. “Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt” (LEVITICUS 19:34). He reminds gentile believers in Jesus—that’s many of us—that once we “were separate from Christ . . . and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world” (EPHESIANS 2:12). So He commands all of us former foreigners, both Jew and gentile, “to show hospitality to strangers” (HEBREWS 13:2).

Now grown up with a family of his own, Daniel praises Jim and Jean Dawson, “who were so Christian that they let a family of refugees come live with them until they could find a home.” God welcomes the stranger and urges us to welcome them too. - MIKE WITTMER

예수님의 입장이 되어

왕족의 입장이 된다는 것은 과연 어떤 것일까요? 항만노동자 겸 간호사의 딸인 안젤라 켈리는 그것을 경험해 보았습니다. 안젤라는 작고한 엘리자베스 여왕의 재위 마지막 20년 동안 공식 의상 담당이었습니다. 하는 일 중의 하나는 나이 많은 여왕의 새 신발을 신고 궁전 뜰 안을 걸어 신발을 길들이는 것이었습니다. 그렇게 하는 한 가지 이유가 있었습니다. 나이든 여인이 예식에 참석해 때로는 장시간 서 있어야 하는 고충을 안타까워하는 마음이 그녀에게 있었던 것입니다. 여왕과 같은 크기의 신발을 신었던 켈리는 이렇게 해서 여왕의 불편을 어느 정도 덜어줄 수 있었습니다.

엘리자베스 여왕을 돌보는 켈리의 섬세한 손길은 골로새(현재 튀르키예의 한 지역) 교회에 보낸 바울의 따뜻한 격려를 생각나게 합니다. “긍휼과 자비와 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음을 옷 입으라”(골로새서 3:12). 우리 삶이 예수님 위에 “세움을 받을”(2:7) 때 우리는 “하나님이 택하신 사랑받는 거룩한 사람”(3:12, 현대인의 성경)이 됩니다. 예수님은 우리가 “옛 사람”을 벗고 “새 사람을 입을” 수 있게 도와주십니다(9-10절). 그것은 곧 하나님께서 우리를사랑하고 용서하셨으니 우리도 다른 이들을 사랑하고 용서하는 사람들의 모습으로 사는 것입니다(13-14절).

우리 주위에는 매일 겪는 삶의 어려움들을 “그들의 입장이 되어” 함께 아파해야 할 사람들이 곳곳에 있습니다. 우리가 그렇게 할 때 언제나 우리를 보고 함께 아파하시는 왕이신 예수님의 입장이 되어볼 수 있습니다.

WALKING IN JESUS’ SHOES

What would it be like to walk in the shoes of royalty? Angela Kelly, the daughter of a dockworker and nurse, knows. She was also the official dresser for the late Queen Elizabeth for the last two decades of the monarch’s life. One of her responsibilities was to break-in the aging Queen’s new shoes by walking in them around the palace grounds. There was a reason for it: compassion for an elderly woman who sometimes was required to stand for extended periods at ceremonies. Because they wore the same shoe size, Kelly was able to save her some discomfort.

Kelly’s personal touch in her care for Queen Elizabeth makes me think of Paul’s warm encouragement to the church in Colossae (an area in modern Turkey): “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (COLOSSIANS 3:12). When our lives are “built on” Jesus (2:7 NLT), we become “God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved” (3:12). He helps us take off our “old self” and “put on the new self” (VV. 9–10)—living out the identity of those who love and forgive others because God has loved and forgiven us (VV. 13–14).

All around us are those who need us to “walk in their shoes” and have compassion for them in the day-to-day challenges of life. When we do, we walk in the shoes (or the sandals) of a king—Jesus—who always has compassion for us. - JAMES BANKS

하나님의 열린 문

대도시 근교의 새 학교로 전학 왔을 때 상담 선생님은 나를 한번 보고는 영어 작문을 제일 못하는 아이들 반에 배정하였습니다. 전에 도심에 있던 학교에서는 시험 점수도 높았고 성적도 뛰어났으며 작문으로 교장 선생님 상도 받고 새 학교로 전학을 왔습니다. 그러나 상담 선생님이 내가 뭔가 맞질 않거나 준비가 안 됐다는 판정을 내리면서 새 학교에서는 “최우수” 작문 반에 들어가는 문이 닫히고 말았습니다.

옛날 빌라델비아 교회 성도들은 그런 억울한 경우를 이해했을 것 같습니다. 작고 변변치 않았던 그 교회가 있던 도시는 당시 수년간 지진을 겪으며 지속적으로 큰 피해를 입었습니다. 거기에다 사탄의 방해까지 받았습니다 (요한계시록 3:9). 그렇게 무시 받던 교회였지만 부활하신 예수님은 “작은 능력을 가지고서도 내 말을 지키며 내 이름을 배반하지 아니하였다”고 말씀하셨습니다 (8절). 그러므로 하나님은 그들 앞에 “열린 문을 두어 능히 닫을 사람이 없게”(8절) 하셨습니다. 그것은 참으로 “예수님이 열면 닫을 사람이 없고 닫으면 열 사람이 없는”(7절) 그런 문이었습니다.

그것은 우리의 섬김 사역에서도 마찬가지입니다. 어떤 문들은 열리지 않습니다. 그러나 하나님을 위한 글을 쓰는 나에게 하나님은 정말 문을 열어 주셨습니다. 학교 상담 선생님은 문을 닫았지만 하나님은 문을 열어 세계의 청중에게 다가가게 하신 것입니다. 닫힌 문이 당신을 막지 못할 것입니다. 예수님이 “내가 문이다”라고 말씀하셨기 때문입니다(요한복음 10:9). 예수님이 열어 주시는 문으로 들어가 주님을 따라갑시다.

GOD’S OPEN DOORS

At my new school near a large city, the guidance counselor took one look at me and placed me in the lowest performing English composition class. I’d arrived from my inner-city school with outstanding test scores, excellent grades, and even a principal’s award for my writing. The door to the “best” writing class in my new school was closed to me, however, when the counselor decided I wasn’t right or ready.

The church in ancient Philadelphia would’ve understood such arbitrary setbacks. A small and humble church, its city had suffered earthquakes in recent years that left lasting damage. Additionally, they faced satanic opposition (REVELATION 3:9). Such a disregarded church had “little strength, yet,” as the risen Jesus noted, “you have kept my word and have not denied my name” (V. 8). Therefore, God placed before them “an open door that no one can shut” (V. 8). Indeed, “what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open” (V. 7).

That’s true for our ministry efforts. Some doors don’t open. With my writing for God, however, He has indeed opened doors, allowing it to reach a global audience, regardless of one counselor’s closed attitudes. Closed doors won’t hinder you either. “I am the door,” Jesus said (JOHN 10:9 KJV). Let’s enter the doors He opens and follow Him. - PATRICIA RAYBON

하나님의 지혜가 담긴 목적

영국은 역사의 나라입니다. 어디를 가든 역사적인 인물을 기리거나 중요한 사건이 일어난 장소를 기념하는 현판을 볼 수 있습니다. 그런데 그 중에는 영국인의 유머 감각을 잘 보여주는 재미있는 작은 현판이 하나 있습니다. 영국 샌드위치시에 있는 한 숙박집의 오래된 현판에는 다음과 같은 메시지가 새겨져 있습니다. “이 장소에서 1782년 9월 5일 아무 일도 일어나지 않았음.”

우리는 기도를 해도 아무 일도 안 일어난다고 여겨질 때가 가끔 있습니다. 그래서 지금 당장 응답해 달라고 하나님께 기도 제목을 가져가 기도하고 또 기도합니다. 시편 기자 다윗도 그런 실망감을 이렇게 표현했습니다. “여호와여 어느 때까지니이까 나를 영원히 잊으시나이까 주의 얼굴을 나에게서 어느 때까지 숨기시겠나이까”(시편 13:1). 우리도 그와 같은 생각을 쉽게 품을 수 있습니다. ‘주여, 얼마나 기다려야 응답해 주실 건가요?’

그러나 우리 하나님은 지혜뿐 아니라 때에 있어서도 완전하신 분입니다. 그래서 다윗은 이렇게 고백할 수 있었습니다. “나는 오직 주의 사랑을 의지하였사오니 나의 마음은 주의 구원을 기뻐하리이다”(5절). 전도서 3장 11절은 “하나님이 모든 것을 지으시되 때를 따라 아름답게 하셨다”고 상기시켜 줍니다. ‘아름답다’는 말은 “적절하다” 또는 “기쁨의 원천”이라는 뜻입니다. 하나님은 항상 우리가 원하는 때에 기도에 응답하시지는 않지만, 반드시 그분의 지혜가 담긴 목적을 이루십니다. 하나님이 응답하실 때 그것이 옳고 선하고 아름다울 것임을 알기에 우리는 안심할 수 있습니다.

GOD’S WISE PURPOSES

The United Kingdom brims with history. Everywhere you go, you see plaques honoring historic figures or commemorat- ing sites where important events occurred. But one such sign exemplifies the droll British sense of humor. On a weathered plaque outside a bed and breakfast in Sandwich, England, a message reads, “On this site, Sept. 5, 1782, nothing happened.”

Sometimes it seems to us that nothing is happening regarding our prayers. We pray and pray, bringing our petitions to our Father with expectation that He’ll respond—right now. The psalmist David expressed such frustration when he prayed, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” (PSALM 13:1). We can easily echo those same thoughts: How long, Lord, before you respond?

However, our God is not only perfect in His wisdom but also in His timing. David was able to say, “I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation” (V. 5). Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us, “[God] has made everything beautiful in its time.” The word beautiful means “appropriate” or “a source of delight.” God may not always respond to our prayers when we’d like Him to, but He’s always working out His wise purposes. We can take heart that when He does answer, it will be right and good and beautiful. - BILL CROWDER

기도하게 만드는 상황

한번은 직장 동료가 우리의 상사 때문에 기도 생활을 잘 하고 있다고 했습니다. 나는 까다로운 상사가 친구에게 어떤 영적 비결을 전해 기도생활에 변화를 일으켰다고 생각하여 감동을 받았습니다. 하지만 아니었습니다. 직장 동료인 내 친구의 설명은 이랬습니다. “그가 가까이 올 때마다 기도를 시작하는 거야.” 상사와 대화하기 전에 기도를 더 많이 하니까 기도 생활이 나아졌다는 것입니다. 상사와의 업무 관계가 힘들다 보니 하나님의 도움이 필요한 것을 알았고, 그래서 하나님을 더 찾게 된 것입니다.

힘든 일과 관계 속에서 기도했던 직장 동료의 방법을 나도 따라하고 있습니다. 이것은 또한 데살로니가전서에 있는 성경적인 방법으로, 바울은 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 “쉬지 말고 기도하라 범사에 감사하라”(5:17-18) 고 말합니다. 어떤 상황에서도 기도는 항상 최고의 방법입니다. 기도는 우리를 하나님과 늘 연결시켜 주고, 우리의 인간적인 생각에 의존하기보다 성령님께 우리를 인도해달라고 초청하는 것입니다(갈라디아서 5:16). 그럴 때 우리는 갈등 앞에서도 “서로 화목하게 지낼”(데살로니가전서 5:13, 새번역) 수 있는 도움을 얻게 됩니다.

하나님이 도와주시면 그분 안에서 기뻐하고 모든 일에 기도하며 자주 감사할 수 있습니다. 이렇게 함으로써 우리는 예수님 안에서 형제 자매들과 더욱 조화를 이루며 살게 될 것입니다.

PROMPTED TO PRAY

Acoworker once told me that her prayer life had improved because of our manager. I was impressed, thinking that our difficult leader had shared some spiritual nuggets with her and influenced how she prays. I was wrong—sort of. My coworker and friend went on to explain: “Every time I see him coming, I start praying.” Her time of prayer had improved because she prayed more before each conversation with him. She knew she needed God’s help in her challenging work relationship with her manager and she called out to Him more because of it.

My coworker’s practice of praying during tough times and interactions is something I’ve adopted. It’s also a biblical practice found in 1 Thessalonians when Paul reminds the believers in Jesus to “pray continually . . . give thanks in all circumstances” (5:17–18). No matter what we face, prayer is always the best practice. It keeps us connected with God and invites His Spirit to direct us (GALATIANS 5:16) rather than having us rely on our human inclinations. This helps us “live in peace with each other” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:13) even when we face conflicts.

As God helps us, we can rejoice in Him, pray about everything, and give thanks often. And those things will help us live in even greater harmony with our brothers and sisters in Jesus. - KATARA PATTON

하나님의 사랑의 손길

건강이 다시 악화되면서 앞을 모르거나 통제할 수 없는 일들에 대한 두려움이 생겼습니다. 하루는 ‘포브스’ 잡지를 읽다가 “지구의 자전 속도”가 빨라지는 것을 연구하던 과학자들이 지구가 “흔들리고 나서 “더 빨리 자전한다”고 발표한 것을 보았습니다. 그들은 “역사상 처음으로 ‘초를 없애기’, 곧 지구의 시간에서 공식적으로 1초를 빼야 할지도 모른다”고 했습니다. 1초 때문에 큰 문제가 생길 것 같지는 않지만 지구의 자전에 변화가 생길 수 있다는 사실은 나에게 큰 일로 여겨졌습니다. 조금만 불안정해도 내 믿음이 흔들리는 것처럼 느껴지기 때문입니다. 그러나 미지의 일들이 아무리 두렵고 환경이 흔들리는 것 같아도 하나님이 통제하신다는 것을 알면 그분을 신뢰할 수 있게 됩니다.

모세는 시편 90편에서 “산이 생기기 전, 땅과 세계도 주께서 조성하시기 전, 곧 영원부터 영원까지 주는 하나님이시니이다”(2절)라고 말했습니다. 모세는 모든 창조물에 대한 하나님의 무한하신 능력과 주권과 권위를 인정하면서 시간이 하나님을 제한할 수 없다고 선포했습니다(3-6절).

하나님과 그분이 만드신 세계에 대해 더 많이 알게 되면 하나님이 시간과 그분의 창조물을 계속해서 얼마나 완벽하게 관리하시는지 알 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리 삶의 모든 미지의 일들과 새롭게 발견되는 모든 것들에 대해서도
신뢰할 수 있는 분입니다. 만물은 하나님의 사랑의 손 안에서 늘 안전합니다.

IN GOD’S LOVING HANDS

After another health setback, I feared the unknown and uncontrollable. One day, while reading a Forbes magazine article, I learned that scientists studied the rising of the “Earth’s rotation velocity” and declared that the Earth “wobbled” and is “spinning faster.” They said we “could require the first-ever ‘drop second’—the official removal of a second from global time.” Though a second doesn’t seem like much of a loss, knowing that the Earth’s rotation could change seemed like a big deal to me. Even slight instability can make my faith feel wobbly. However, knowing God is in control helps me to trust Him no matter how scary our unknowns or how shaky our circumstances may seem.

In Psalm 90, Moses said, “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God” (V. 2). Acknowledging God’s unlimited power, control, and authority over all creation, Moses declared that time cannot constrain God (VV. 3–6).

As we seek to know more about God and the wonderful world He made, we’ll discover how He continues perfectly managing time and all He created. God can be trusted with every unknown and newly discovered thing in our lives too. All creation remains secure in God’s loving hands. - XOCHITL DIXON

예수님 안에서의 성장

나는 어렸을 때 어른들은 지혜로워 실패를 하지 않는다고 생각했습니다. ‘어른들은 항상 무엇을 해야 할지를 알아. 나도 언젠가 어른이 되면 무엇을 해야 할지 늘 알게 될 거야.’라고 생각하곤 했습니다. 그런데 “그 언젠가”는 벌써 여러 해 전에 왔는데 나는 여전히 무얼 해야 할지 모를 때가 많은 것을 깨닫습니다. 가족이 아프거나, 직장에서의 문제, 사람 관계의 어려움 등이 있을 때마다 나 자신의 힘으로 해낼 수 있다는 망상은 다 사라지고 내가 선택할 수 있는 것은 한 가지, 곧 눈을 감고 이렇게 나직이 속삭이는 것밖에 없었습니다, “주님, 도와주세요. 어떻게 해야 할지 모르겠습니다.”

바울 사도는 이런 무력감에 대해 잘 알고 있었습니다. 육체의 질병과 같은 삶 속의 “가시”는 그에게 많은 좌절과 고통을 안겨주었습니다. 그러나 이 가시로 인해 바울은 하나님의 사랑과 약속과 축복으로 어려움을 넉넉히 견디고 이길 수 있다는 것을 경험했습니다(고린도후서 12:9). 그는 자신의 약함과 무력함이 패배를 의미하지 않는다는 것을 알았습니다. 오히려 그것을 믿음으로 하나님께 맡겨드리면 하나님은 그것을 도구로 삼아 이런 상황들 가운데 직접
역사하십니다(9-10절).

어른이 된다고 모든 것을 알지는 못합니다. 나이가 들면서 분명 더 지혜가 생기긴 하지만, 결국 우리의 연약함은 우리가 실제로 얼마나 무력한 존재인지를 드러낼 뿐입니다. 우리의 진정한 힘은 그리스도 안에 있습니다. 왜냐하면
“내가 약할 그 때에 오히려 내가 강하기 때문입니다”(10절, 새번역). 진정한 “성장”이란 하나님의 도우심이 필요하다는 것을 깨닫고, 그분이 주시는 능력을 알고 믿고 순종하는 것을 의미합니다.

GROWING UP IN JESUS

As a child, I viewed grown-ups as wise and incapable of failure. They always know what to do, I’d think. One day, when I’m grown up, I’ll always know what to do too. Well, “one day” came many years ago, and all it has taught me is that, many times, I still don’t know what to do. Whether it’s illness in the family, problems at work, or conflict in a relationship, such times have wrested all delusions of personal control and strength, simply leaving me one option—to close my eyes and whisper, “Lord, help. I don’t know what to do.”

The apostle Paul understood this feeling of helplessness. The “thorn” in his life, which may have been a physical ailment, caused him much frustration and pain. It was through this thorn, however, that Paul experienced God’s love, promises, and blessings as suficient for him to endure and overcome his difficulties (2 CORINTHIANS 12:9). He learned that personal weakness and helplessness don’t mean defeat. When surrendered to God in trust, they become tools for Him to work in and through these circumstances (VV. 9−10).

Our being a grown-up doesn’t mean we’re all-knowing. Sure, we grow wiser with age, but ultimately our weaknesses often reveal how truly powerless we are. Our true power is in Christ: “For when I am weak, then I am strong” (V. 10). Truly “growing up” means knowing, trusting, and obeying the power that comes when we realize we need God’s help. - KAREN HUANG
