발 씻기기... 그리고 접시 닦기

찰리와 잰은 그들의 50회 결혼기념일에 아들 존과 함께 카페에서 아침 식사를 하고 있었습니다. 그날 그 음식점은 일손이 모자라 매니저와 요리사, 그리고 십대 소녀 한 명만이 손님 안내와 주문, 그리고 음식 나르는 일을 하고 있었습니다. 식사를 마친 후 찰리가 아내와 아들에게 “앞으로 몇 시간 내에 해야 할 중요한 일이 있어?”라고 묻자 두 사람 다 아무것도 없다고 했습니다.

그래서 매니저의 허락 하에 찰리와 잰은 식당 뒷편에서 접시를 닦기 시작했고, 존은 어질러진 식탁들을 치웠습니다. 존의 말에 의하면, 그날 일어난 일은 그 가족에게는 그리 특별한 일이 아니었습니다. 존의 부모님은 “섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려”(마가복음 10:45) 오신 예수님을 항상 본으로 삼고 있었던 것입니다.

요한복음 13장에는 예수님이 제자들과 함께 최후의 만찬을 나누는 장면이 나옵니다. 그날 밤 선생이신 예수님은 제자들의 더러운 발을 씻겨주시면서 겸손히 섬기는 것의 원칙을 가르쳐주셨습니다(14-15절). 주님께서 열 두 제자들의 발을 씻기는 천한 일을 기꺼이 하셨다면, 제자들도 또한 기쁜 마음으로 다른 사람들을 섬겨야 합니다.

우리가 하는 모든 봉사가 각각 다르게 보일지는 모르지만, 똑같은 한 가지가 있습니다. 그것은 섬길 때 커다란 기쁨이 따른다는 것입니다. 섬기는 행위에 깔려 있는 목적은 섬기는 사람들이 칭찬을 듣기 위함이 아니라, 다른 사람들을 사랑으로 섬김으로써 겸손하게 자신를 희생하신 하나님께 모든 찬양을 돌려드리기 위함입니다.

WASHING FEET . . . AND DISHES

On Charley and Jan’s fiftieth wedding anniversary, they shared breakfast at a café with their son Jon. That day, the restaurant was understaffed with just a manager, cook, and one teenage girl who was working as hostess, waitress, and busser. As they finished their breakfast, Charley turned to his wife and son and said, “Do you have anything important going on in the next few hours?” They didn’t.

So, with permission from the manager, Charley and Jan began washing dishes in the back of the restaurant while Jon started clearing the cluttered tables. According to Jon, what happened that day wasn’t really that unusual. His parents had always set an example of Jesus who “did not come to be served, but to serve” (MARK 10:45).

In John 13, we read about the last meal Christ shared with His disciples. That night, the Teacher taught them the principle of humble service by washing their dirty feet (VV. 14–15). If He was willing to do the lowly job of washing a dozen men’s feet, they too should joyfully serve others.

Every avenue of service we encounter may look different, but one thing’s the same: there’s great joy in serving. The purpose behind acts of service isn’t to bring praise to the ones performing them, but to lovingly serve others while directing all praise to our humble, self-sacrificing God.

하나님을 따르기로 선택하기

영국 신문 ‘데일리 미러’에 의하면 “보통 사람은 일생 동안 773,618 번의 결정을 한다”고 하며, 이어서 우리는 “그 결정 중 143,262 번을 후회한다”고 합니다. 이 수치가 어떻게 나오게 되었는지는 알 수 없지만, 우리가 일생 동안 수많은 결정을 해야 한다는 것은 분명합니다. 특히 우리의 모든 결정에는 결과가 따르며 어떤 결정은 다른 것보다 훨씬 더 중요하다는 점을 고려해볼 때, 그 결정들의 엄청난 숫자가 우리를 마비시켜버릴지도 모르겠습니다.

사십 년을 광야에서 방황한 후 이스라엘 자손들은 그들이 거할 새로운 땅의 문턱에 와 있었습니다. 나중에 그 땅에 들어간 후 그들의 지도자 여호수아는 그들에게 도전적인 선택을 내어놓았습니다. 여호수아는 “여호와를 경외하고 온전함과 진실함으로 그를 섬기라 너희 조상들이... 섬겼던 신들을 치워 버리라”(여호수아 24:14)고 하면서, “만일 여호와를 섬기는 것이 너희에게 좋지 않게 보이거든... 너희가 섬길 자를 오늘 택하라 오직 나와 내 집은 여호와를 섬기겠노라”(15절)고 말했습니다.

우리가 매일 하루를 시작할 때, 여러 가지 가능성들이 우리 앞에 펼쳐지면서 결정을 내려야 할 수십 가지 일들이 생기게 됩니다. 그럴 때 우리를 인도해 달라고 하나님께 기도하면 결정을 내리는데 도움을 받을 수 있을 것입니다. 성령님의 권능으로 우리는 매일 하나님을 따르는 결정을 내릴 수 있습니다.

CHOOSING TO FOLLOW GOD

“The average person will make 773,618 decisions over a lifetime,” claims the Daily Mirror. The British newspaper goes on to assert that we “will come to regret 143,262 of them.” I have no idea how the paper arrived at these numbers, but it’s clear that we face countless decisions throughout our lifetime. The sheer quantity of them might become paralyzing, especially when we consider that all our choices have consequences, some far more momentous than others.

After forty years wandering in the wilderness, the children of Israel stood at the threshold of their new homeland. Later, after entering the land, Joshua, their leader, issued to them a challenging choice: “Fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness,” he said. “Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped” (JOSHUA 24:14). Joshua told them, “If serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve . . . . But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (V. 15).

As we begin each new day, possibilities stretch before us, leading to scores of decisions. Taking the time to ask God to guide us will influence the choices we make. By the power of the Spirit, we can choose to follow Him every day.

실수를 통해 배움

세계 경제를 무너뜨린 1929년과 2008년의 재정적 실수와 같은 일이 미래에 일어나는 것을 방지하기 위해 스코틀랜드의 에딘버러에 ‘실수 도서관’이 설립되었습니다. 이곳에는 차세대 경제학자들의 교육을 돕기 위해 2천 권 이상의 책이 비치되어 있습니다. 이 도서관은 사서들의 말처럼 어떻게 “똑똑한 사람들이 어리석은 일들을 계속 반복하는지” 완벽한 사례를 보여주는 역할을 합니다. 사서들은 튼튼한 경제를 이루는 유일한 길은 과거의 실수로부터 배우는 것이라고 믿고 있습니다.

바울은 유혹에 빠지지 않고 영적으로 강건한 삶을 살 수 있는 한 가지 방법은 과거에 하나님의 백성들이 저질렀던 실수를 통해 배우는 것이라고 고린도 성도들에게 상기시켜 주었습니다. 사도는 그들이 영적으로 누리는 특권으로 교만해지지 않도록 지혜를 얻을 수 있는 사례로 고대 이스라엘의 실패를 한 예로 들었습니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 우상을 숭배하고 “음행하였으며” 하나님의 계획과 목적에 대해 불평하고 하나님이 세우신 지도자들에게 반항했습니다. 그런 죄 때문에 그들은 하나님의 징계를 받았습니다(고린도전서 10:7-10). 바울은 예수님을 믿는 이들이 이스라엘의 실수를 반복하지 않도록 돕기 위해 성경에 있는 이런 역사적인 “사례들”을 제시했습니다(11절).

LEARNING FROM MISTAKES

To help avoid future financial mistakes, such as those in 1929 and 2008 that brought down the world’s economy, the Library of Mistakes was founded in Edinburgh, Scotland. It features a collection of more than two thousand books that can help educate the next generation of economists. And it serves as a perfect example of how, according to the library’s curators, “smart people keep doing stupid things.” The curators believe that the only way to build a strong economy is to learn from prior mistakes.

Paul reminded the Corinthians that one way to avoid yielding to temptation and to have a strong spiritual life is to learn from the mistakes of God’s people in the past. So to make sure they wouldn’t become overconfident with their spiritual privilege, the apostle used ancient Israel’s failures as an example from which to gain wisdom. The Israelites engaged in idolatry, chose to “commit sexual immorality,” grumbled about the plans and purposes of God, and rebelled against His leaders. Due to their sin, they experienced His discipline (1 CORINTHIANS 10:7–10). Paul presented these historical “examples” from Scripture to help believers in Jesus avoid repeating Israel’s mistakes (V. 11).

As God helps us, let’s learn from our mistakes and those made by others so that we might gain a heart of obedience for Him.

예수님을 위해 다른 사람들을 섬김

여배우 니셀 니콜스는 오리지널 ‘스타트렉’ 시리즈에서 우후라 중위 역할을 연기한 것으로 주로 기억되고 있습니다. 그 역할은 미국 주요 텔레비전 쇼에 처음으로 출연한 아프리카계 미국 여성 중의 하나가 된 니콜스에게 개인적인 성공을 안겨주었습니다. 그러나 그것은 더 큰 성공을 향한 시작에 불과했습니다.

니콜스는 사실 ‘스타트렉’ 첫번째 시즌 후 그 역할을 그만 두고 본업인 연극으로 돌아갔었습니다. 그러나 그때 만난 마틴 루터 킹 목사가 니콜스에게 그 역할을 그만 두지 말라고 권했습니다. 그는 텔레비전에서 처음으로 아프리카계 미국인들이 우주에 가기도 하면서 무엇이든 해낼수 있는 지적인 사람으로 비춰지고 있다고 말했습니다. 니콜스는 우후라 중위 역을 계속 맡아 연기함으로써 더 큰 성공을 거둘 수 있었으며, 흑인 여성과 어린이들에게 그들이 어떤 사람이 될 수 있는지도 보여주었습니다.

SERVING OTHERS FOR JESUS

Actress Nichelle Nichols is best remembered for playing Lieutenant Uhura in the original Star Trek series. Landing the role was a personal win for Nichols, making her one of the first African American women on a major TV show. But a greater win was to come of it.

Nichols had actually resigned from Star Trek after its first season, to return to her theater work. But then she met Martin Luther King Jr., who urged her not to leave. For the first time, he said, African Americans were being seen on TV as intelligent people who could do anything, even go to space. By playing Lieutenant Uhura, Nichols was achieving a greater win—showing Black women and children what they could become.

It reminds me of the time James and John asked Jesus for the two best positions in His kingdom (MARK 10:37). What personal wins such positions would be! Jesus not only explained the painful realities of their request (VV. 38–40) but called them to higher goals, saying, “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (V. 43). His followers weren’t to seek personal wins alone but, like Him, use their positions to serve others (V. 45).

Nichelle Nichols stayed with Star Trek for the greater win it provided for African Americans. May we too never be content with a personal win alone but use whatever position we gain to serve others in His name.

하나님께 고정된 시선

19세기의 스코틀랜드 목사 토마스 찰머스가 스코틀랜드 고지대에서 마차를 타고 가다가 마차가 끔찍한 절벽을 따라 있는 좁은 산등성이에 맞닥뜨렸던 순간을 이야기한 적이 있습니다. 여러 말 중의 한 마리가 놀라 날뛰자 마부는 낭떠러지로 곤두박질쳐 죽을까 두려워하여 말채찍을 계속해서 휘둘렀습니다. 그들이 위험한 지역을 벗어난 후 찰머스가 마부에게 왜 그렇게 채찍을 격렬하게 휘둘렀느냐고 묻자 마부는 이렇게 대답했습니다. ”말들이 다른 것에 신경쓰게 해야 겠다고 생각했습니다. 말들의 주의를 끌 필요가 있었지요.”

우리 주위 곳곳에 위협과 위험들이 넘쳐 흐르는 이 세상에서 우리도 모두 우리 주의를 끌 다른 무언가가 필요합니다. 그러나 우리에게는 단지 정신적으로 딴 데 신경쓰는 것, 곧 심리적인 속임수 같은 것 이상의 것이 필요합니다. 우리에게 가장 필요한 것은 우리의 두려움보다 훨씬 강력한 어떤 실체에 우리의 생각을 고정시키는 것입니다. 이사야가 유다의 하나님의 백성들에게 말한 것처럼, 우리에게 진정 필요한 것은 하나님께 우리의 마음을 고정시키는 것입니다. 이사야는 “여호와는 자기를 의지하...는 자에게 완전한 평화를 주신다”(이사야 26:3, 현대인의 성경)고 약속합니다. 그리고 “주 여호와는 영원한 반석이시므로 여호와를 영원히 신뢰할”(4절) 수 있습니다.

A GAZE FIXED ON GOD

Nineteenth-century Scottish pastor Thomas Chalmers once told the story of riding in a horse-drawn carriage in the Highlands region as it hugged a narrow mountain ledge along a harrowing precipice. One of the horses startled, and the driver, fearing they would plummet to their death, repeatedly flicked his whip. After they made it past the danger, Chalmers asked the driver why he used the whip with such force. “I needed to give the horses something else to think about,” he said. “I needed to get their attention.”

In a world overflowing with threats and dangers all around us, we all need something else to arrest our attention. However, we need more than merely mental distraction—a kind of psychological trick. What we most need is to fasten our minds upon a reality more powerful than all our fears. As Isaiah told God’s people in Judah, what we truly need is to fix our minds on God. “You will keep in perfect peace,” Isaiah promises, “all who trust in you” (ISAIAH 26:3 NLT). And we can “trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock” (V. 4 NLT).

Peace—this is the gift for all who fix their gaze on God. And His peace provides far more than only a technique for holding our worst thoughts at bay. For those who will surrender their future, their hopes, and their worries, the Spirit makes an entirely new way of life possible.

예수님 안에서 인내함

여러 해 전 신학교에서 공부할 때 우리는 매주 예배를 드렸습니다. 한번은 예배에서 우리 학생들이 “위대하신 주”를 부르고 있을 때, 존경받던 교수님 세 분이 열정적으로 노래하는 모습이 눈에 들어왔습니다. 그들의 얼굴은 하나님을 믿는 믿음으로만 가능한 기쁨으로 빛이 나고 있었습니다. 세월이 흘러 그분들 모두 불치병을 앓게 되었을 때, 그것을 견뎌 내며 다른 사람들을 격려할 수 있게 해주었던 것도 바로 그 믿음이었습니다.

지금도 교수님들이 노래하던 그 모습을 떠올리면 내가 시련을 잘 견딜 수 있도록 계속해서 격려가 됩니다. 나에게 있어 그분들의 모습은 믿음으로 살았던 사람들의 많은 감동적인 이야기에 포함되어 있습니다. 그 모습은 또한 히브리서 12:2-3에서 “그 앞에 있는 기쁨을 위하여... 십자가를 참으신”(2 절) 예수님께 초점을 맞추라고 하는 저자의 요구를 우리가 어떻게 따를 수 있는지도 일깨워 줍니다.

박해나 삶의 어려움들로 인한 시련으로 삶을 영위하기 힘들 때, 우리는 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 그분의 약속을 신뢰했던 사람들의 본을 따를 수 있습니다. 예수님과, 그리고 우리 앞서 갔던 믿음의 선배들이 인내할 수 있었다는 것을 기억하면서 “우리 앞에 놓인 달음질을 참으면서 달려 갈”(1절, 새번역) 수 있습니다. 히브리서 저자는 “[우리가] 피곤하여 낙심하지 않기 위하여... 참으신 이를 생각하라”(3절)고 우리에게 권면합니다.

이제 천국에서 행복을 누리고 계실 교수님들은 아마 이렇게 말할 것입니다. “믿음으로 사는 삶은 그만한 가치가 있다네. 계속 그렇게 살아가게.”

PERSEVERING IN JESUS

When I was studying in seminary years ago, we had a weekly chapel service. At one service, while we students were singing “Great Is the Lord,” I spotted three of our wellloved professors singing with fervor. Their faces radiated joy, made possible only by their faith in God. Years later, as each went through terminal illness, it was this faith that enabled them to endure and encourage others.

Today, the memory of my teachers singing continues to encourage me to keep going in my trials. To me, they’re a few of the many inspiring stories of people who lived by faith. They’re a reminder of how we can follow the author’s call in Hebrews 12:2−3 to fix our eyes on Jesus who “for the joy set before him . . . endured the cross” (V. 2).

When trials—from persecution or life’s challenges—make it hard to keep going, we have the example of those who took God at His word and trusted in His promises. We can “run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (V. 1), remembering that Jesus—and those who have gone before us—was able to endure. The writer urges us to “consider him . . . so that [we] will not grow weary and lose heart” (V. 3).

My teachers, now happy in heaven, would likely say: “The life of faith is worth it. Keep going.”

하나님의 일꾼

레자는 중동의 난민 캠프에서 성경책을 받은 후 예수님을 알고 믿게 되었습니다. 예수님의 이름으로 그가 드린 첫 기도는 “나를 주님의 일꾼으로 써 주소서”였습니다. 이후 캠프를 떠난 그는 하나님의 기도의 응답으로 예상치 않게 구호기관에 일자리를 얻어, 다시 캠프로 돌아가 그가 잘 알고 사랑하던 사람들을 섬기게 되었습니다. 그는 스포츠클럽, 언어교실, 법률자문 등, “사람들에게 희망을 줄 수 있는 어떤 것이든” 준비해서 시작했습니다. 레자는 이런 프로그램들을 다른 이들에게 봉사하며 하나님의 지혜와 사랑을 나누는 통로로 보고 있습니다.

GOD’S WORKER

In a refugee camp in the Middle East, when Reza received a Bible, he came to know and believe in Jesus. His first prayer in Christ’s name was, “Use me as your worker.” Later, after he left the camp, God answered that prayer when he unexpectedly secured a job with a relief agency, returning to the camp to serve the people he knew and loved. He set up sports clubs, language classes, and legal advice—“anything that can give people hope.” He sees these programs as a way to serve others and to share God’s wisdom and love.

When reading his Bible, Reza felt an instant connection with the story of Joseph from Genesis. He noticed how God used Joseph to further His work while he was in prison. Because God was with Joseph, He showed him kindness and granted him favor. The prison warden put Joseph in charge and didn’t have to pay attention to matters there because God gave Joseph “success in whatever he did” (GENESIS 39:23).

God promises to be with us too. Whether we’re facing imprisonment— literal or figurative—hardship, displacement, heartache, or sorrow, we can trust that He’ll never leave us. Just as He enabled Reza to serve those in the camp and Joseph to run the prison, He’ll stay close to us always.

단순한 요구

“자기 전에 앞방을 청소해 주겠니?” 딸들 중 한 명에게 말했더니, “왜 쟤는 안 해요?”라는 대답이 바로 돌아왔습니다.

딸들이 어렸을 때 집에서는 이런 가벼운 저항이 자주 있었습니다. 그럴 때마다 내 대답은 항상 똑같았습니다. “다른 아이들은 신경 쓰지 마. 난 네게 부탁했어.”

요한복음 21장을 보면 제자들도 인간의 이런 성향을 보여줍니다. 예수님은 주님을 세 번 부인한 베드로를 막 회복시켜 주셨습니다(요한복음 18:15-18, 25-27 참조). 이제 예수님은 베드로에게 “나를 따르라”(21:19)고 단순하지만 힘든 계명을 주셨습니다. 예수님은 베드로가 죽을 때까지 주님을 따르게 될 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다(18-19절).

베드로는 예수님의 말씀을 듣자마자 바로 뒤에 있던 다른 제자에 대해서 물었습니다. “이 사람은 어떻게 되겠사옵나이까”(21절). 예수님은 “내가 올 때까지 그를 머물게 하고자 할지라도 네게 무슨 상관이냐”라고 하시고는 “너는 나를 따르라”고 말씀하셨습니다(22절).

우리도 베드로처럼 행동할 때가 얼마나 많은지 모릅니다! 우리는 하나님께서 우리와 함께 행하시는 일보다는 다른 사람들의 믿음의 여정에 대해 더 궁금해합니다. 베드로는 만년에 요한복음 21장에서 예수님이 미리 말씀하셨던 죽음이 아주 가까워졌을 때, 주님이 주신 단순한 명령을 이렇게 자세히 일러주었습니다. “너희가 순종하는 자식처럼 전에 알지 못할 때에 따르던 너의 사욕을 본받지 말고 오직 너희를 부르신 거룩한 이처럼 너희도 모든 행실에 거룩한 자가 되라”(베드로전서 1:14-15). 우리 각자는 주위 사람들이 아닌, 예수님께 초점을 맞추어야 합니다.

A SIMPLE REQUEST

“Please clean the front room before you go to bed,” I said to one of my daughters. Instantly came the reply, “Why doesn’t she have to do it?”

Such mild resistance was frequent in our home when our girls were young. My response was always the same: “Don’t worry about your sisters; I asked you.”

In John 21, we see this human tendency illustrated among the disciples. Jesus had just restored Peter after he’d denied Him three times (SEE JOHN 18:15–18, 25–27). Now Jesus said to Peter, “Follow me!” (21:19)—a simple but painful command. Jesus explained that Peter would follow him to the death (VV. 18–19). Peter barely had time to comprehend Jesus’ words before he asked about the disciple behind them: “What about him?” (V. 21). Jesus replied, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?” Then He said, “You must follow me” (V. 22).

How often we’re like Peter! We wonder about the faith journeys of others and not what God is doing with us. Late in his life, when the death Jesus foretold in John 21 was much closer, Peter elaborated on Christ’s simple command: “As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do” (1 PETER 1:14–15). That’s enough to keep each of us focused on Jesus and not on those around us.

기도로의 요청

아브라함 링컨은 한 친구에게 이렇게 털어놓았습니다. “나는 다른 돌파구가 없다는 감당못할 확신에 부딪칠 때마다 그저 무릎으로 나아갈 수밖에 없었네.” 미국 남북전쟁으로 참혹했던 시기에 링컨 대통령은 기도에 힘썼을 뿐 아니라 온 국민이 기도에 동참하기를 요청했습니다. 1861년 대통령은 한 날을 “겸손과 기도와 금식의 날”로 선포했습니다. 그리고 1863년에 다시 그렇게 하면서 이렇게 말했습니다. “죄와 불법을 겸손히 슬픈 마음으로 고백하고 또 진정으로 회개하면 자비와 용서을 받을 것이라는 확실한 소망을 가지고 하나님의 절대적인 권능에 의지하는 것은 개인뿐 아니라 국가의 의무입니다.”

이스라엘 백성들이 70년간 바벨론에서 포로생활을 한 후 고레스 왕은 예루살렘으로 돌아가고 싶은 사람은 누구든지 돌아가도 좋다는 칙령을 내렸습니다. 바벨론 왕의 술 관원(11절)이었던 이스라엘 사람(느헤미야 1:6) 느헤미야는 돌아간 백성들이 “큰 환난을 만나고 능욕을 받으며”(3절) 지낸다는 소식을 접하고 “앉아서 울고” 여러 날 동안 슬퍼하며 금식하고 기도했습니다 (4절). 느헤미야는 백성들을 위해 기도에 힘썼으며(5-11절), 나중에 그 또한 이스라엘 백성들에게 금식하며 기도하기를 요청했습니다(9:1-37).

여러 세기가 지난 후 로마 제국 시대 때에, 바울 사도도 이와 비슷하게 그의 서신을 읽는 자들에게 높은 지위에 있는 사람들을 위해 기도할 것을 당부했습니다(디모데전서 2:1-2). 우리 하나님은 지금도 다른 이들의 삶에 영향을 끼치는 것들에 대해 우리가 기도할 때 들으십니다.

A CALL TO PRAYER

Abraham Lincoln confided to a friend, “I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go.” In the horrific years of the American Civil War, President Lincoln not only spent time in fervent prayer but also called the country to join him. In 1861, he proclaimed a “day of humiliation, prayer and fasting.” And he did so again in 1863, stating, “It is the duty of nations as well as of men to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God: to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon.”

After the Israelites had been captives in Babylon for seventy years, King Cyrus decreed that any Israelite who wanted to return to Jerusalem could return. When Nehemiah, an Israelite (NEHEMIAH 1:6) and cupbearer to the king of Babylon (V. 11), learned that those who had returned were “in great trouble and disgrace” (V. 3), he “sat down and wept” and spent days mourning, fasting and praying (V. 4). He wrestled in prayer for his nation (VV. 5–11). And later, he too called his people to fast and pray (9:1–37).

Centuries later, in the days of the Roman Empire, the apostle Paul similarly urged his readers to pray for those in authority (1 TIMOTHY 2:1–2). Our God still hears our prayers about matters that affect the lives of others.

헤아릴 수 없는 사랑

“내가 그대를 어떻게 사랑하냐고요? 그 방법들을 헤아려볼게요.” 엘리자베스 배럿 브라우닝이 쓴 ‘포르투갈 사람으로부터 온 소네트’ 의 이 구절은 영문으로 된 가장 잘 알려진 시 중의 하나입니다. 이것은 이 여류 시인이 로버트 브라우닝과 결혼하기 전 그에게 보낸 시였는데, 브라우닝은 너무 감동한 나머지 그녀의 모든 시를 모아 시집으로 발간할 것을 제안했습니다. 하지만 아주 애정어린 부드러운 시의 언어 때문에 사생활 보호 차원에서 배럿은 마치 어떤 포르투갈 작가가 쓴 시의 번역인 것처럼 꾸며서 시집을 발간했습니다.

우리는 상대방에게 공개적으로 애정을 표현할 때 때로는 어색함을 느낄 수 있습니다. 하지만 성경은 하나님의 사랑을 표현함에 있어서 거침이 없습니다. 예레미야는 하나님의 백성을 향한 그분의 사랑을 다음과 같은 애정어린 언어로 표현합니다. “내가 영원한 사랑으로 너를 사랑하기에 인자함으로 너를 이끌었다 하였다”(예레미야 31:3). 하나님의 백성이 하나님을 외면했을 때에도 하나님은 그들을 회복시키고 그들 가까이 함께 하겠다고 약속하시며 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 이스라엘로 안식을 얻게 하러 가겠다”(2절).

예수님은 주님께 돌아오는 모든 이에게 평안과 안식을 주시는, 회복시키시는 하나님의 사랑의 궁극적인 표현입니다. 구유에서 십자가와 빈 무덤에 이르기까지, 예수님은 고집스러운 이 세상을 하나님께로 인도하려는 하나님의 바람이 형상화된 분이십니다. 성경을 처음부터 끝까지 읽어 보면 계속해서 하나님께서 어떻게 사랑하시는지 “그 방법들을 헤아려 볼” 수 있을 것입니다. 하지만 그 방법들이 끝이 없기에 결코 모두 헤아릴 수 없을 것입니다.

LOVE BEYOND COUNTING

“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” Those words from Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Sonnets from the Portuguese are among the best-known poetry in the English language. She wrote them to Robert Browning before they were married, and he was so moved that he encouraged her to publish her entire collection of poems. But because the language of the sonnets was very tender, out of a desire for personal privacy Barrett published them as if they were translations from a Portuguese writer.

Sometimes we can feel awkward when we openly express affection for others. But the Bible, by contrast, doesn’t hold back on its presentation of God’s love. Jeremiah recounted God’s affection for His people with these tender words: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness” (JEREMIAH 31:3). Even though His people had turned from Him, God promised to restore them and personally draw them near. “I will come to give rest to Israel,” He told them (V. 2).

Jesus is the ultimate expression of God’s restorative love, giving peace and rest to any who turn to Him. From the manger to the cross to the empty tomb, He’s the personification of God’s desire to call a wayward world to Himself. Read the Bible cover to cover and you’ll “count the ways” of God’s love over and over; but eternal as they are, you’ll never come to their end.
