희망의 미래를 바라봄

2005년 허리케인 카트리나로 폐허가 된 뉴올리언스는 서서히 재건되었습니다. 가장 타격이 컸던 지역인 로우어 나인스 워드에서는 카트리나가 지나가고 몇 년 동안 생활필수품마저 구하기가 어려웠습니다. 버넬 코틀론은 이것을 바꾸기 위해 노력하여, 2014년 11 월에 카트리나 이후 그 지역에 첫 식료품 가게를 열었습니다. “내가 건물을 사니까 사람들이 모두 나를 미쳤다고 했어요.”라고 코틀론은 회상했습니다. 그러나 “가게를 찾은 첫 번째 손님이 눈물을 흘렸어요. 그분은 [마을이] 다시 회복되리라고는 생각도 안 해봤거든요.” 그의 어머니도 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 못 본 것을 아들이 보았어요. 하나님은 이사야 선지자에게 재앙 가운데서 생각도 못한 미래의 희망을 보게 하셨습니다. “가련하고 가난한 자가 물을 구하되 물이 없는”(이사야 41:17) 것을 보시고, 하나님은 “광야가 못이 되게 하며 마른 땅이 샘이 되게 하리라”(18절)고 약속하셨습니다. 그의 백성들은 굶주림과 목마름 대신 다시 번영을 경험하게 되면서 그것이 “여호와의 손이 지으신 것”(20절)임을 알게 될 것이었습니다.

하나님은 언제나 회복을 주관하시면서, “피조물도 썩어짐의 종 노릇 한 데서 해방될”(로마서 8:21) 미래를 가져오기 위해 일하고 계십니다. 우리가 하나님의 선하심을 의지할 때 하나님은 희망이 있는 미래를 볼 수 있게 도와주십니다.

SEEING A FUTURE OF HOPE

After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, New Orleans worked to slowly rebuild. One of the most hard-hit areas was the Lower Ninth Ward, where for years after Katrina, residents lacked access to basic resources. Burnell Cotlon worked to change that. In November 2014, he opened the first grocery store in the Lower Ninth Ward after Katrina. “When I bought the building, everybody thought that I was crazy,” Cotlon recalled. But “the very first customer cried cuz she . . . never thought the [neighborhood] was coming back.” His mother said her son “saw something I didn’t see. I’m glad [he] . . . took that chance.”

God enabled the prophet Isaiah to see an unexpected future of hope in the face of devastation. Seeing “the poor and needy search for water, but there is none” (ISAIAH 41:17), God promised to “turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs” (V. 18). When instead of hunger and thirst, His people experienced flourishing once more, they would know “the hand of the Lord has done this” (V. 20).

He’s still the author of restoration, at work bringing about a future when “creation itself will be liberated from its bondage” (ROMANS 8:21). As we trust in His goodness, He helps us see a future where hope is possible.

인생의 순례

매년 2억이 넘는 사람들이 여러 종교적 배경을 가지고 순례 여행을 떠납니다. 오랜 역사를 가진 순례의 목적은 많은 사람의 경우 성지에 가서 일종의 축복을 받는 것이었습니다. 그래서 성전이나 대성당, 사원, 또는 축복을 받을 수 있는 다른 어떤 곳을 찾는 것입니다.

그러나 영국의 켈틱 그리스도인들은 순례를 다르게 보았습니다. 그들은 방향을 정하지 않고 자연 속으로 들어가기도 하고, 배를 타고 나가 어디든지 바다가 데려가는 곳으로 가기도 했습니다. 그들에게 있어 순례는 하나님을 신뢰하며 낯선 곳으로 가는 것이었고, 어떤 축복이든 목적지에 도착해서 받는 것이 아니라 가는 길에 받는 것이라고 생각했습니다.

히브리서 11장은 켈트인들에게 중요한 말씀이었습니다. 그리스도인의 삶이란 세상 방식을 뒤로 하고 나그네처럼 하나님의 도성을 향해 가는 것이기에 (13-16절), 그들의 삶의 여정이 곧 순례와 같았습니다. 순례자들은 아무도 가보지 않은 어려운 길 위에서도 필요를 공급하시는 하나님을 신뢰함으로 구약에 기록된 믿음의 사람들과 같은 믿음을 키워나갔습니다(1-12절).

이것은 실제로 성지순례를 하지 않아도 누구나 배워야 할 교훈입니다. 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 인생이란 하나님 나라에 이르기까지 어두운 숲과 막다른 길, 시련으로 가득 찬 순례의 길입니다. 우리가 이 여정을 마치기까지, 가는 길에서 공급해 주시는 하나님을 경험하는 복을 누릴 수 있기를 바랍니다.

LIFE’S PILGRIMAGE

More than two hundred million people from a variety of faiths undertake a pilgrimage each year. For many throughout the ages, a pilgrim’s task has been to journey to a sacred place to receive some kind of blessing. It’s been all about reaching the temple, cathedral, shrine, or other destination where a blessing can be received.

Britain’s Celtic Christians, however, saw pilgrimage differently. They set out directionless into the wild or let their boats drift wherever the oceans took them—pilgrimage for them being about trusting God in unfamiliar territory. Any blessing was found not at the destination but along the journey.

Hebrews 11 was an important passage for the Celts. Since the life in Christ is about leaving the world’s ways behind and trekking like foreigners to the city of God (VV. 13-16), a pilgrimage echoed their life’s journey. By trusting God to provide along their difficult, untrodden path, the pilgrim grew the kind of faith lived by the heroes of old (VV. 1-12).

What a lesson to learn, whether we physically trek or not: for those who have trusted Jesus, life is a pilgrimage to God’s heavenly country, full of dark forests, dead ends, and trials. As we journey through, may we not miss the blessing of experiencing God’s provision along the way.

서로에게서 배움

줌(Zoom)이 의사소통의 도구로 널리 사용되기 몇 해 전, 한 친구가 나에게 영상통화로 일에 대해 논의하자고 했습니다. 내 이메일을 읽은 친구는 내가 당황해하는 것을 알고는 영상통화 방법을 가르쳐줄 십대 아이를 찾아보라고 제안했습니다.

친구의 제안은 세대 간의 관계가 중요하다는 것을 지적해 줍니다. 그것은 룻과 나오미의 이야기에서도 볼 수 있습니다. 룻은 자신의 고향을 떠나 나오미를 따라 베들레헴으로 돌아가기로 결정한 충실한 며느리로 잘 알려져 있습니다(룻기 1:16-17). 그들이 마을에 도착했을 때 룻은 나오미에게 “제가 밭에 가서 [우리를 위해] 이삭을 줍게 해주세요”(2:2, 현대인의 성경) 라고 말했습니다. 이렇게 며느리는 시어머니를 도왔고, 시어머니는 며느리가 보아스와 결혼하도록 도와주었습니다. 룻에게 준 나오미의 조언으로 보아스는 그녀의 죽은 시댁 식구들에게 속한 모든 것을 사서 룻을 “[그의] 아내”로 맞아들였습니다(4:9-10).

우리는 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 얻은 지혜를 젊은 세대와 나누는 분들의 조언을 당연히 존중합니다. 그러나 룻과 나오미는 그것이 양방향으로 이루어질 수 있음을 알려줍니다. 우리는 윗세대 뿐 아니라 젊은 세대에게서도 배울 점들이 있습니다. 세대 간에 서로 사랑하며 충실한 관계를 만들어 나가도록 합시다. 그럴 때 우리와 다른 이들에게 복이 될 것이고, 모르던 것을 배우는 데에도 도움이 될 것입니다.

LEARNING FROM EACH OTHER

Years before Zoom was an accessible communication tool, a friend asked me to join her on a video call to discuss a project. Through the tone of my emails, she could tell I was baffled, so she suggested I find a teenager to help me figure out how to set up a video call.

Her suggestion points to the value of intergenerational relationships. It’s something observed in Ruth and Naomi’s story. Ruth is often celebrated for being a loyal daughter-in-law, deciding to leave her land to accompany Naomi back to Bethlehem (RUTH 1:16-17). When they arrived in the town, the younger woman said to Naomi, “Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain [for us]” (2:2). She helped the older woman, who then helped the younger woman marry Boaz. Naomi’s advice for Ruth prompted Boaz to take action in purchasing her deceased in-laws’ property and to take her “as [his] wife” (4:9-10).

We certainly respect the advice of those who share their seasoned wisdom with younger generations. But Ruth and Naomi remind us that the exchange can go both ways. There’s something to be learned from those younger than us as well as those who are older. Let’s seek to develop loving and loyal intergenerational relationships. It will bless us and others and help us learn something we don’t know.

겸손한 욘

사람들은 소작농인 욘에게 큰 기대 심리가 없었습니다. 그는 눈이 나쁘고 몸도 성치 않았지만 노르웨이의 자기 마을 사람들을 위해 헌신했으며, 몸이 아파 잠 못 이루는 수많은 밤을 기도로 보냈습니다. 그는 기도 속에서 마을의 한 집 한 집을 찾아가 사람들의 이름을 각각 불러가며 기도했고 아직 만나보지 못한 아이들까지도 빠뜨리지 않고 기도했습니다. 사람들은 따뜻한 성품의 욘을 좋아했으며 그에게서 지혜와 조언을 구하기도 했습니다. 욘에게서 실질적인 도움을 받지 못했을 때에도 사람들은 그의 사랑을 받고 행복한 마음으로 그와 헤어졌습니다. 그리고 욘이 죽었을 때 가족 하나 없던 그의 장례식은 마을에서 전례 없이 크게 치러졌습니다. 그의 기도가 활짝 피어나 그가 상상도 못한 열매를 맺었던 것입니다.

이 겸손했던 사람은 자신이 섬기는 사람들을 사랑하고 옥에 갇혀서도 그들을 위해 기도했던 바울 사도의 본을 따랐습니다. 바울은 로마의 감옥에 갇혀 있는 동안에 에베소의 성도들에게 편지를 보내어 하나님께서 그들에게 “지혜와 계시의 영”을 주시고 그들의 마음의 눈을 “밝혀 주시기를” 위해 기도했습니다(에베소서 1:17-18). 바울은 그들이 성령님의 권능으로 예수님을 알고 사랑으로 하나되어 살기를 간절히 바랐습니다.

욘과 바울 사도는 그들이 사랑하고 섬기는 사람들을 기도로 하나님께 맡겨드렸고, 자신들도 하나님께 온전히 내어드렸습니다. 오늘 우리가 사람들을 어떻게 사랑하고 섬겨야 할지 이들이 보여준 본을 생각해 볼 수 있기를 바랍니다.

HUMBLE JØRN

They didn’t think Jørn, a tenant farming the land, would amount to much. Yet despite his weak vision and other physical limitations, he poured himself out for those in his village in Norway, praying the many nights when his pain kept him awake. In prayer he’d move from house to house, naming each person individually, even the children he hadn’t yet met. People loved his gentle spirit and would seek his wisdom and advice. If he couldn’t help them practically, they’d still feel blessed when they left, having received his love. And when Jørn died, his funeral was the biggest ever in that community, even though he had no family there. His prayers blossomed and brought forth fruit beyond what he could have imagined.

This humble man followed in the example of the apostle Paul, who loved those he served and prayed for them while confined. He wrote to those in Ephesus while he was likely imprisoned in Rome, praying that God would give them “the Spirit of wisdom and revelation” and that the eyes of their hearts would be “enlightened” (EPHESIANS 1:17-18). He yearned that they would know Jesus and live with love and unity through the power of the Spirit. Jørn and the apostle Paul poured themselves out to God, committing

those they loved and served to Him in prayer. May we consider their examples in how we love and serve others today.

하나님을 경외함

공포증이란 어떤 대상이나 상황에 대해 “비이성적인 두려움”을 갖는 것으로 정의됩니다. 예를 들어 거미공포증은 거미를 무서워하는 것입니다. (어떤 사람들은 그것을 두려워하는 것이 지극히 합리적이라고 주장할 수도 있겠지만요!) 그리고 풍선공포증, 초콜릿공포증도 있습니다. 이런 공포증 외에도 실제로 약 사백 가지의 공포증이 기록되어 있습니다. 우리는 거의 모든 것에 두려움을 갖게 되는 것 같습니다.

성경은 십계명을 받은 이스라엘 사람들의 두려움에 대해 “뭇 백성이 우레와 번개를 본지라... 그들이 볼 때에 떨었다”(출애굽기 20:18)고 말합니다. 모세는 백성을 위로하며 다음과 같이 매우 재미있는 말을 했습니다. “두려워하지 말라 하나님이 임하심은 너희를 시험하고 너희로 경외하여 범죄하지 않게 하려 하심이니라”(20절). 모세의 이 말은 “두려워하지 말라 그러나 두려워하라” 라는 모순 같이 들립니다. 실제로 히브리어에서 “두려움”이라는 단어에는 두 개 이상의 의미가 있습니다. 어떤 것을 무서워하여 떠는 것과 하나님을 경외하는 마음입니다.

우리는 풍선공포증이나 초콜릿공포증에 대해 알고 나면 웃음이 나올 수도 있습니다. 그러나 공포증이 심각한 이유는 우리가 무엇에 대해서나 두려워질 수가 있다는 것입니다. 두려움이 거미처럼 우리 삶에 몰래 다가오면 세상은 무서운 곳이 될 수 있습니다. 공포증과 두려움에 시달릴 때, 우리 하나님은 경외의 하나님이시며 어둠 가운데서도 함께 하시며 안위하신다는 것을 기억하는 것이 좋습니다.

IN AWE OF GOD

A phobia is defined as the “irrational fear” of certain things or situations. Arachnophobia is a fear of spiders (though some might argue that’s a perfectly rational thing to be afraid of!). Then there’s globophobia and xocolatophobia. These and some four hundred other phobias are real and documented. It seems we can become afraid of most anything.

The Bible tells of the Israelites’ fear after receiving the Ten Commandments: “When the people saw the thunder and lightning . . . they trembled with fear” (EXODUS 20:18). Moses comforted them, offering this most interesting statement: “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you” (V. 20). Moses seems to contradict himself: “Don’t be afraid but be afraid.” In fact, the Hebrew word for “fear” contains at least two meanings—a trembling terror of something or a reverent awe of God.

We may laugh to learn that globophobia is the fear of balloons and xocolatophobia is a fear of chocolate. The more serious bottom line about phobias is that we can be afraid of all kinds of things. Fears creep into our lives like spiders, and the world can be a scary place. As we struggle with phobias and fears, we do well to be reminded that our God is an awesome God, offering us His present comfort in the midst of darkness.

선한 일에 부요함

오셀라 맥카티는 70년 동안 세탁소에서 손으로 옷을 빨고, 말리고, 다리는 힘든 일을 해오다 86세가 되어 마침내 은퇴를 하게 되었습니다. 얼마 되지 않는 수입을 평생 동안 성실히 모아온 오셀라는 형편이 어려운 학생들을 위해 장학금 15만불을 가까운 대학에 기부해 지역사회를 놀라게 했습니다. 오셀라의 아낌없는 기부에 감명받은 수백 명의 사람들이 기부에 동참해 장학금은 그녀가 낸 기금의 세 배로 불어났습니다.

오셀라는 부의 진정한 가치는 자신의 이익을 위해서가 아니라 다른 이들을 축복하는데 사용하는 것임을 잘 알았던 사람입니다. 바울 사도는 디모데에게 이 세대에서 부한 자들로 하여금 “선한 일에 부요하도록” 가르치라고(디모데전서 6:18, 현대인의 성경) 강력히 권했습니다. 우리 모두는 청지기로서 관리해야 할 부를 돈이나 또는 다른 형태로 받았습니다. 바울은 우리가 가진 것을 믿지 말고 우리의 소망을 오직 하나님께 두면서(17절), “나누어 주기를 좋아하며 너그러운”(18절) 자가 되어 천국에 재물을 쌓아 두라고 권면합니다.

하나님의 경제에서는 가진 것을 베풀지 않고 움켜쥐고 있으면 결국 빈손이 될 뿐입니다. 사랑으로 다른 이들에게 나누어 주는 것이 충족에 이르는 길입니다. 더 많은 것을 추구하기보다 가진 것에 만족하는 마음으로 경건하게 사는 것이 큰 유익이 됩니다(6절). 우리도 오셀라처럼 가진 것을 아낌없이 베풀면 어떨까요? 하나님의 인도하심을 따라 오늘 선한 일에 부요하도록 열심을 내도록 합시다.

RICH IN GOOD DEEDS

After seven decades of hard work as a washerwoman—scrubbing, drying, and pressing clothes by hand—Oseola McCarty was finally ready to retire at the age of eighty-six. She had scrupulously saved her meager earnings all those years, and to the amazement of her community, Oseola donated $150,000 to the nearby university to create a scholarship fund for needy students. Inspired by her selfless gift, hundreds of people donated enough to triple her endowment.

Oseola understood the true value of her wealth was not in using it for her own gain, but to bless others. The apostle Paul exhorted Timothy to command those who are rich in this present world “to be rich in good deeds” (1 TIMOTHY 6:18). Each of us has been given wealth to steward, whether it’s in the form of financial means or other resources. Instead of trusting in our resources, Paul cautions us to put our hope only in God (V. 17) and to lay up treasure in heaven by being “generous and willing to share” (V. 18).

In God’s economy, withholding and not being generous only leads to emptiness. Giving to others out of love is the way to fulfillment. To have both godliness and contentment with what we have, instead of striving for more, is great gain (V. 6). What would it look for us to be generous with our resources, as Oseola was? Let us strive to be rich in good deeds today as God leads us.

제2차 세계대전 때 영국의 하원 의사당이 폭격을 당하자 윈스턴 처칠 수상은 의회에서 의사당을 원래 모양대로 복원해야 한다고 말했습니다. 의사당은 얼굴을 마주보고 토론할 수 있도록 작아야 하고, 둥근 반원형이 아니라 길쭉하게 해서 의원들이 “중앙을 통해 다닐” 수 있게 해야 한다고 했습니다. 이것은 진보와 보수가 한 방에서 서로를 마주 보고 대치하여, 진영을 바꿀 때에는 심사숙고를 해야 하는 영국의 정당 정치가 지속될 수 있었던 방식이었습니다. 처칠은 “우리는 건물을 만들지만 그 다음엔 건물이 우리를 만들어 갑니다.”라고 하며 말을 마쳤습니다.

하나님은 이스라엘 백성들에게 주신 것처럼 우리에게 예배 공간에 대해 세밀한 지침을 주시지는 않습니다. 그렇다고 우리의 예배가 그만큼 중요하지 않다는 것은 결코 아닙니다. 바로 우리 자신이 하나님께서 거하시는 구별된 성막이 되어야 합니다. 우리가 무슨 일을 하든 그 일들이 하나님이 누구시며 무슨 일을 하시는지 생각나게 해주기를 소망합니다.

HOUSE OF WORSHIP

When Britain’s House of Commons was bombed in World War II, Prime Minister Winston Churchill told Parliament they must rebuild it according to its original design. It must be small, so debates would remain face-to-face. It must be oblong rather than semicircular, allowing politicians to “move around the center.” This preserved Britain’s party system, where Left and Right faced each other across the room, requiring careful thought before switching sides. Churchill concluded, “We shape our buildings and afterwards our buildings shape us.”

God seems to agree. Seven chapters in Exodus (CHS. 25-31) give instructions on building the tabernacle, and six more (CHS. 35-40) describe how Israel did it. God cared about their worship. When the people entered the courtyard, the gleaming gold and the tabernacle’s colorful curtains (26:1, 31-37) dazzled them. The altar of burnt offering (27:1-8) and water basin (30:17-21) reminded them of the cost of their forgiveness. The tabernacle contained a lampstand (25:31-40), bread table (25:23-30), altar of incense (30:1-6), and ark of the covenant (25:10-22). Each item held great significance.

God doesn’t give us detailed instructions for our worship space as He did with Israel, yet our worship is no less vital. Our very being is to be a tabernacle set apart for Him to dwell in. May everything we do remind us of who He is and what He does.

저를 사용하소서

제임스 모리스는 한 때 “글은 몰라도 마음이 따뜻한 평신도”라고 불렸습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그를 사용하여 아우구스투스 토플라디가 예수 그리스도를 믿어 구원받게 하셨습니다. 18세기 때 지금까지도 사랑받는 찬송가 ‘만세반석 열리니’를 지은 토플라디는 제임스 모리스의 설교를 들었을 때를 이렇게 회상합니다. “이상하게도 내가... 자기 이름도 제대로 못쓰는 사람이 사역하는 헛간에서 하나님을 믿는 몇몇 사람들 사이에 끼어... 하나님께 나아가게 될 줄은 몰랐습니다. 이것은 분명히 주님께서 하신 놀라운 일이었습니다.”

USE ME

James Morris was once described as “an illiterate but warmhearted layman,” but God used him to draw Augustus Toplady to saving faith in Jesus Christ. Toplady, the eighteenth-century author of the timeless hymn “Rock of Ages,” described hearing Morris preach: “Strange that I . . . should be brought nigh unto God . . . amidst a handful of God’s people met together in a barn, and under the ministry of one who could hardly spell his name. Surely this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous.”

Indeed, God does marvelous things in unlikely places and through those we may rank as “unqualified” or ordinary. In 1 Corinthians 1, Paul reminded believers in Jesus that they were an unimpressive lot. “Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth” (V. 26). Though the Corinthian believers were quite ordinary, by God’s grace they weren’t lacking in giftedness and usefulness (SEE V. 7). And God—who knows how to put boasters in their place (VV. 27-29)— was at work among them and through them.

Do you see yourself as “plain,” “ordinary,” or even “less than”? Don’t fret. If you have Jesus and are willing to be used by Him, you have enough. May your heart’s prayer be, “God, use me!”

새롭고 확실한 것

수잔은 3년 동안 생필품 외에는 본인을 위해 아무것도 사지 않았습니다. 그 친구는 코로나19 팬데믹으로 수입에 타격을 입어 검소한 생활을 하게 되었습니다. 수잔은 말합니다. “어느 날, 아파트를 청소하다가 내 물건들을 보니 다 초라하고 빛이 바랬어. 그때부터 신선하고 신나는 느낌을 주는 새로운 것들이 그리워지기 시작했어. 주변에 널려 있는 것들이 다 식상하고 진부해 보였고, 기대할 게 하나도 없는 느낌이었지.”

그러던 수잔은 성경의 한 권에서 생각지도 않게 격려를 얻게 되었습니다. 예루살렘이 바벨론에 함락된 후 예레미야가 쓴 애가는 선지자와 백성들이 입은 슬픔의 상처들을 기록한 책이지만, 슬픔으로 인한 절망 가운데서도 하나님의 사랑이라는 소망이 확실히 바탕에 자리잡고 있습니다. 예레미야는 “여호와의 긍휼이 무궁하시며... 이것들이 아침마다 새롭다”(3:22-23)고 기록했습니다.

수잔은 하나님의 깊은 사랑이 날마다 끊임없이 새롭게 임한다는 것을 떠올렸습니다. 상황이 우리에게 더 이상 기대할 것이 없다고 느껴질 때에도, 우리는 하나님의 신실하심을 기억하고 하나님이 우리에게 어떤 도움을 주실지 기대할 수 있습니다. 우리는 우리의 소망이 결코 헛되지 않다(24-25절)는 것을 알고 하나님 안에서 확실하게 소망을 가질 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님의 변함없는 사랑과 긍휼 안에 우리의 소망이 보장되어 있기 때문입니다.

수잔은 말합니다. “하나님의 사랑이 매일 나의 그 ‘새로움’이야. 이제 난 소망을 가지고 앞을 볼 수 있어.”

NEW AND CERTAIN

For three years, apart from household necessities, Susan didn’t buy anything for herself. The Covid-19 pandemic affected my friend’s income, and she embraced a simple lifestyle. “One day, while cleaning my apartment, I noticed how shabby and faded my things looked,” she shared. “That’s when I started to miss having new things—the sense of freshness and excitement. My surroundings seemed tired and stale. I felt as if there was nothing to look forward to.”

Susan found encouragement in an unlikely book in the Bible. Written by Jeremiah after Jerusalem fell to Babylon, Lamentations describes the open wound of grief suffered by the prophet and the people. In the midst of grief’s despair, however, lies sure ground for hope—God’s love. “His compassions never fail,” Jeremiah wrote. “They are new every morning” (3:22-23).

Susan was reminded that God’s deep love relentlessly breaks through anew each day. When circumstances make us feel there’s no longer anything to look forward to, we can call to mind His faithfulness and look forward to how He’ll provide for us. We can confidently hope in God, knowing our hoping is never in vain (VV. 24-25) because it’s secured in His steadfast love and compassion.

자유의 하나님

아브라함 링컨 대통령이 노예 해방을 한 지 2년 반이 지났고 남부 연합도 항복을 했지만, 텍사스주는 여전히 노예 된 사람들의 자유를 인정하지 않았습니다. 그러나 1865년 6월 19일, 북부군의 고든 그랭거 장군이 텍사스의 갤버스턴으로 진격하여 노예들을 모두 풀어줄 것을 강력히 요구했습니다. 족쇄가 풀리면서 속박당하던 사람들이 자유가 선포되는 것을 들었을 때의 그 충격과 기쁨을 상상해 보십시오.

GOD OF FREEDOM

President Abraham Lincoln had emancipated people held in slavery two-and-a half-years earlier and the Confederacy had surrendered, yet the state of Texas still hadn’t acknowledged the freedom of enslaved persons. However, on June 19, 1865, Union army general Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas, and demanded that all enslaved persons be released. Imagine the shock and joy as shackles fell off and those in bondage heard the pronouncement of freedom.

God sees the oppressed, and He’ll ultimately announce freedom for those under the weight of injustice. This is true now just as it was true in Moses’ day. God appeared to him from a burning bush with an urgent message: “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt” (EXODUS 3:7). He not only saw Egypt’s brutality against Israel—but He also planned to do something about it. “I have come down to rescue them,” God declared, “and to bring them . . . into a good and spacious land” (V. 8). He intended to declare freedom to Israel, and Moses would be the mouthpiece. “I am sending you to Pharaoh,” God told His servant, “to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt” (V. 10).

Though God’s timing may not happen as quickly as we hope, one day He’ll free us from all bondage and injustice. He gives hope and liberation to all who are oppressed.
