하나님께 소망을 두라

대학 3년 과정을 시작하려고 학교에 도착한 제레미는 자신이 어떤 일을 겪게 될지 모르고 가장 저렴한 기숙사를 신청했습니다. 후에 그는 그 기숙사가 “최악”이었다고 했습니다. “방과 화장실이 너무 했어요.” 그러나 돈도 선택의 여지도 없었던 그는 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 할 수 있는 건 3년 뒤엔 돌아갈 좋은 집이 있으니 여기 있는 동안만 최대한 잘 살아보자는 생각 뿐이었습니다.”

제레미의 이야기는 지나가는 이 세상(요한1서 2:17)에서“땅에 있는 우리의 장막 집”, 즉 죽을 인간의 몸(고린도후서 5:1)이 살아가면서 매일 겪는 어려움들을 잘 보여줍니다. 그래서 우리는 살면서 만나는 여러 어려움을 가지고 애쓰며 “짐 진 것 같이 탄식”(고린도후서 5:4)합니다.

우리를 계속 나아가게 하는 것은 언젠가 우리가 영원한 부활의 몸, 곧 “하늘의 거처”(4절)를 얻어 지금같은 신음과 좌절이 없는 세상에서 살게 될 것이라는(로마서 8:19-22) 확실한 소망 때문입니다. 이 소망을 가지고 우리는 하나님이 사랑으로 마련해 주신 지금의 삶을 최대한 잘 살 수가 있습니다. 또한 하나님은 우리에게 주신 자원과 재능을 사용하여 하나님과 사람들을 섬길 수 있게 도와주실 것입니다. 그리고 이것이 바로 “그런즉 우리는 몸으로 있든지 떠나든지 주를 기쁘시게 하는 자가 되기를 힘쓰는”(고린도후서 5:9) 이유입니다.

HOPE IN GOD

Jeremy didn’t realize what he was getting into when he arrived at the university for his three-year course and asked for the cheapest dorm room available. “It was awful,” he recounted. “The room and its bathroom were terrible.” But he had little money and little choice. “All I could do,” he said, “was think, I have a nice home to go back to in three years’ time, so I’ll stick with this and make the most of my time here.”

Jeremy’s story mirrors the everyday challenges of living in an “earthly tent”—a human body that will die (2 CORINTHIANS 5:1), operating in a world that is passing away (1 JOHN 2:17). Thus we “groan and are burdened” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:4) as we struggle to cope with the many difficulties life throws at us.

What keeps us going is the certain hope that one day we’ll have an immortal, resurrected body—a “heavenly dwelling” (V. 4)—and be living in a world free of its present groaning and frustration (ROMANS 8:19-22). This hope enables us to make the most of this present life God has lovingly provided. He’ll also help us to use the resources and talents He’s given us, so we can serve Him and others. And that’s why “we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:9).

하나님으로부터 도망치다

쥴리와 리즈는 캘리포니아 해안에서 카약을 타고 혹등고래를 관찰 했습니다. 수면 근처에서 주로 활동하는 것으로 알려진 혹등고래를 쉽게 발견할 수가 있습니다. 두 여성은 바로 밑에서 고래 하나가 물 밖으로 올라오는 순간 너무나 놀랐습니다. 보고 있던 한 사람이 이 장면을 찍었는데 고래의 커다란 입에 비해 너무나 작은 두 여성과 카약을 담아냈습니다. 그리고 두 사람은 잠시 물에 빠졌지만 무사히 나왔습니다.

그들의 경험은 “큰 물고기”(요나 1:17)에 삼켜졌던 선지자 요나의 성경 이야기를 생각나게 합니다. 하나님은 요나에게 니느웨 사람들에게 전도하라고 명령하셨지만, 요나는 하나님을 거부한 그들은 하나님의 용서를 받을 자격이 없다고 생각했습니다. 그래서 그는 순종하지 않고 도망쳐 배를 탔습니다. 하나님은 무서운 폭풍을 보내셨고, 요나는 배 밖으로 던져졌습니다.

하나님은 요나가 죽을 수 밖에 없었던 큰 바다에서 죽지 않도록 하셔서 자기 잘못 때문에 받을 훨씬 나쁜 결과를 면하게 하셨습니다. 요나가 “여호와께 불러 아뢰었더니” 하나님이 들으셨습니다(2:2). 그가 자신의 잘못을 시인하고 하나님의 선하심을 찬양하고 인정하자 하나님의 명대로 물고기 뱃속에서 “육지로” 던져졌습니다(10절).

하나님의 은혜로 우리의 죄를 인정하고 예수님이 우리를 위해 돌아가심을 믿는 믿음을 보여줄 때 우리는 마땅히 받을 영적 죽음을 면하고 예수님을 통해 새로운 삶을 경험하게 됩니다.

RUNNING FROM GOD

Julie and Liz kayaked off the coast of California, scouting for humpback whales. Humpbacks are known for being active near the surface, making them easy to spot. The two women got the surprise of their lives when one surfaced directly underneath them. An onlooker caught footage of their encounter that showed the large mouth of the whale dwarfing the women and their kayaks. After briefly going underwater, the women escaped unharmed.

Their experience offers perspective on the biblical account of the prophet Jonah being swallowed by a “huge fish” (JONAH 1:17). God had instructed him to preach to the Ninevites, but because they’d rejected God, Jonah didn’t feel they were worthy of His forgiveness. Instead of obeying, he ran away and took passage on a ship. God sent a dangerous storm, and he was thrown overboard.

God provided a way to preserve Jonah from certain death on the high seas, sparing him the far-worse consequences of his actions. Jonah “called to the Lord” and God listened (2:2). After Jonah admitted his wrongdoing and expressed his praise and acknowledgment of God’s goodness, he was—at His command— expelled from the fish “onto dry land” (V. 10).

By God’s grace, when we acknowledge our sin and express faith in Jesus’ sacrifice, we’re spared the spiritual death we deserve and experience new life through Him.

주린 자에게 양식을

아프리카의 북동부 지역은 여러 해 동안 극심한 가뭄으로 농작물이 황폐화되고 가축들이 죽고 수백만의 사람들이 위험에 처하는 고통을 겪었습니다. 그 중에도 전쟁과 억압으로부터 피난 나온 케냐의 카쿠마 난민 캠프의 경우에는 그 취약한 정도가 더욱 심각합니다. 최근의 한 보고서에는 한 젊은 엄마가 아기를 데리고 캠프 관리자에게 데리고 온 일을 기록했습니다. 아기는 심한 영양실조에 걸려 “머리카락과 피부는... 말라 부서지고” 있었습니다. 아기는 웃음도 잃고 먹지도 않았습니다. 아기의 작은 몸은 죽어가는 상태였습니다. 전문의들이 즉시 달려왔습니다. 아직도 필요한 것은 많지만 감사하게도 생사가 걸린 다급한 곳에는 필수품을 즉각 공급하는 체제가 만들어졌습니다.

이와 같이 절망적인 곳이 바로 하나님의 백성들이 그분의 빛과 사랑을 비추라고 부르심을 받는 곳입니다(이사야 58:8). 사람들이 굶주리고 병들고 위협을 당할 때 하나님은 그의 백성들이 예수님의 이름으로 가장 먼저 나서서 음식과 약품과 안전을 마련하기를 원하십니다. 이사야는 자신들은 다만 금식과 기도를 열심히 한다고 하며 정작 위기에 필요한 실제적인 도움을 주지 않았던 옛 이스라엘 백성을 꾸짖었습니다. 그들은 “굶주린 자들에게 음식을 나누어 주고”, “가난한 방랑자에게 은신처”를 내어주며, “벌거벗은 자들”에게 옷을 입히지 않았던 것입니다(7절).

하나님은 굶주린 자들에게 물질적, 영적 양식이 모두 돌아가기를 원하십니다. 그리고 하나님은 우리 안에서, 우리를 통하여 그 필요를 채우십니다.

FOOD FOR THE HUNGRY

For years, the Horn of Africa has suffered from a brutal drought that has devastated crops, killed livestock, and imperiled millions. Among the most vulnerable—like the people at Kenya’s Kahuma Refugee Camp who’ve fled from wars and oppression— it’s even more dire. A recent report described a young mother bringing her baby to camp officials. The infant suffered from severe malnutrition, leaving “her hair and skin . . . dry and brittle.” She wouldn’t smile and wouldn’t eat. Her tiny body was shutting down. Specialists immediately intervened. Thankfully, even though the needs are still great, an infrastructure has been built to provide immediate, life-or-death necessities.

These desperate places are exactly where God’s people are called to shine His light and love (ISAIAH 58:8). When people are starving, sick, or threatened, God summons His people to be the first to provide food, medicine, and safety—all in Jesus’ name. Isaiah rebuked ancient Israel for thinking they were being faithful with their fasting and prayers while ignoring the actual compassionate work the crisis required: sharing “food with the hungry,” providing “the poor wanderer with shelter,” and clothing “the naked” (V. 7).

God desires for the hungry to be fed—both physically and spiritually. And He works in and through us as He meets the need.

성령께서 임재하십니다

노스캐롤라이나의 샬롯에서 뉴욕으로 가는 비행기에서 비행 전 점검을 하던 승무원이 비행기 타는 것을 유난히 불안해하며 염려하는 한 승객을 보았습니다. 승무원은 통로에 앉아 그 여자 승객의 손을 잡고 비행의 순서를 설명해주며 괜찮을 거라며 안심시켜 주었습니다. 그는 “승객이 일단 비행기를 타면 승무원보다 승객이 최우선”이라고 말했습니다. “그리고 승객이 불편해 하시는 것 같으면 ‘무슨 일이죠? 뭘 도와드릴까요?’하며 다가가 묻습니다.” 그 승무원이 이렇게 직접 자상하게 돌보는 모습은 예수님의 말씀처럼 믿는 성도들을 위해 성령님이 하시는 일과도 같은 것이라 하겠습니다.

그리스도의 죽음과 부활과 승천은 인간을 죄에서 구원하시기 위해 필요하고 유익한 것이었지만, 제자들에게는 커다란 마음의 충격과 깊은 슬픔을 주었습니다(요한복음 14:1). 그래서 예수님은 제자들에게 세상에서 주님의 사명을 수행하기 위해 혼자 남겨지지 않을 것이라고 안심시켜 주셨습니다. 예수님은 제자들과 함께 하실 성령을 보내시겠다고 하셨습니다. “보혜사를 너희에게 주사 영원토록 너희와 함께 있게 하리니”(16절). 성령님이 예수님에 대해 증인이 되어 예수님이 행하고 말씀하신 모든 것을 생각나게 할 것이라고 하셨습니다(26절). 제자들은 고난을 당할 때에 성령의 “위로를 받게” 될 것이라 했습니다(사도행전 9:31).

예수님을 믿는 신자들을 포함하여 누구나 다 살면서 불안과 두려움과 슬픔의 소용돌이를 경험합니다. 그러나 예수님은 이곳에 안 계셔도 성령님이 오셔서 우리를 위로하실 것을 약속하셨습니다.

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS PRESENT

Making his preflight checks for a flight from Charlotte, North Carolina, to New York City, a flight attendant noticed a passenger visibly anxious and concerned about flying. He sat in the aisle, held her hand, explained each step of the flight process, and reassured her that she was going to be fine. “When you get on an aircraft, it’s not about us, it’s about you,” he said. “And if you’re not feeling good, I want to be there to say, ‘Hey, what’s wrong? Is there something I can do?’ ” His caring presence can be a picture of what Jesus said the Holy Spirit would do for believers in Him.

Christ’s death and resurrection and ascension were necessary and beneficial to save people from their sins, but it would also create emotional turbulence and deep sorrow in the disciples’ hearts (JOHN 14:1). So He reassured them that they wouldn’t be left alone to carry out His mission in the world. He would send the Holy Spirit to be with them—an “advocate to help [them] and be with [them] forever” (V. 16). The Spirit would bear witness about Jesus and remind them of all Christ did and said (V. 26). They would be “encouraged by” Him during difficult times (ACTS 9:31).

In this life, everyone—including believers in Christ—will experience the turbulence of anxiety, fear, and grief. But He’s promised that, in His absence, the Holy Spirit is present to comfort us.

내면으로부터의 변화

제2차 세계대전 이후 가장 큰 영국의 주택 화재로 서부 런던의 24 층짜리 그렌펠 타워 건물에 화재가 발생해 70명이 목숨을 잃었습니다. 조사 결과 화염이 그렇게 빨리 퍼지게 된 주요 원인은 건물 외부를 개조하면서 사용한 외장재 때문이었습니다. 이 외장재의 겉은 알루미늄 재질이었지만 내부는 가연성이 매우 높은 플라스틱이었던 것입니다.

어떻게 이런 위험한 물건이 판매되고 사용될 수 있었을까요? 제품을 판매한 쪽에서는 불량한 화재 안전 테스트 결과를 말하지 않았고, 구매자들은 저렴한 가격에 정신이 팔려 경고 신호를 무시했습니다. 반짝이는 외장재는 겉으로만 멋져 보였습니다.

예수님은 종교 지도자들의 그럴듯한 겉모습 속에 숨겨진 부패를 지적하시며 심히 꾸짖으셨습니다. 예수님은 그들이 “회칠한 무덤 같으니 겉으로는 아름답게 보이나” 안으로는 죽은 뼈로 가득하다고 하셨습니다 (마태복음 23:27). 그들은 “정의와 긍휼과 믿음”(23절)을 추구하지 않고 대신 겉모습에 치중했습니다. 속에 있는 “탐욕과 방탕”은 놔두고 “잔의 겉”(25절) 만 깨끗이 했습니다.

겉으로 좋게 보이도록 하는 것이 우리의 죄와 상한 모습을 하나님 앞에 솔직히 드러내는 것보다도 더 쉽습니다. 그러나 아무리 겉모습이 좋게 보여도 부패한 마음은 여전히 위험한 상태에 놓여 있습니다. 하나님은 우리더러 하나님께서 우리의 내면에서 시작하여 우리의 ‘전부’를 변화시키도록 하라고 권면하십니다(요한1서 1:9).

TRANSFORMED FROM THE INSIDE

In the worst UK residential fire since World War II, fire engulfed the twenty-four story Grenfell Tower building in West London, claiming the lives of seventy people. Investigations revealed a primary reason the flames spread so quickly was the cladding used as part of renovation that covered the building’s exterior. The material was aluminum on the outside but had an extremely flammable plastic core.

How was such a dangerous material allowed to be sold and installed? The product’s sellers failed to disclose poor fire safety test results. And buyers, drawn by the material’s cheap price tag, failed to heed warning signs. The shiny cladding looked nice on the outside.

Some of Jesus’ harshest words were directed at religious teachers He accused of covering corruption behind a nice-looking exterior. He said they were like “whitewashed tombs”—“beautiful on the outside” but inside full of dead bones (MATTHEW 23:27). Instead of pursuing “justice, mercy and faithfulness” (V. 23), they were focused on looking good—cleaning “the outside of the cup” but not the “greed and self-indulgence” inside (V. 25).

It’s easier to focus on looking good than to bring our sin and brokenness honestly before God. But a nice-looking exterior doesn’t make a corrupt heart any less dangerous. God invites us to let Him transform all of us from the inside (1 JOHN 1:9).

가지 되신 예수님

애리조나의 세도나에는 붉은 색의 산들 사이에 아름다운 성십자 성당이 우뚝 서 있습니다. 작은 예배실에 들어서자 십자가에 달린 예수님의 특이한 조각상에 눈이 갔습니다. 전형적인 십자가 대신 예수님은 두 개의 나무 줄기에서 뻗어있는 가지에 못 박히신 모습으로 계십니다. 수평으로 잘려진 죽은 한 나무 줄기는 구약에서 하나님을 거부한 이스라엘 지파들을 상징하고, 다른 한 줄기는 위쪽으로 뻗어 자라서 번영하는 유다 지파와 다윗 왕의 혈통을 의미합니다.

상징적 의미를 지닌 이 작품은 예수님에 관한 구약의 중요한 예언을 가리킵니다. 유다 지파는 포로 생활을 하고 있었지만 예레미야 선지자는 하나님의 희망의 메시지를 이렇게 전했습니다. “이 땅에 정의와 공의를 실행할” (예레미야 33:15) 구원자를 보내주실 것이라, “일러 준 선한 말을 성취할 날이 이르리라”(14절). 사람들이 이 구원자가 누구인지를 알 수 있는 한 가지는 그가 “다윗에게서...나게 하리니”(15절)라고 했던 말씀으로, 이는 그가 다윗 왕의 후손이 될 것임을 의미합니다.

JESUS THE BRANCH

Rising among the red mountains of Sedona, Arizona, is the beautiful Chapel of the Holy Cross. Entering the small chapel, I was immediately drawn to an unusual sculpture of Jesus on the cross. Instead of a traditional cross, Jesus is shown crucified on the branches of a tree with two trunks. Horizontally, a severed, dead trunk represents the tribes of Israel in the Old Testament that rejected God. The other trunk grows upward and branches out to symbolize the flourishing tribe of Judah and the family line of King David.

The symbolically significant art points to an important prophecy in the Old Testament about Jesus. Although the tribe of Judah was living in captivity, the prophet Jeremiah gave a hopeful message from God: “I will fulfill the good promise I made” (JEREMIAH 33:14) to provide a rescuer who would “do what is just and right in the land” (V. 15). One way the people would know the identity of the rescuer was He would “sprout from David’s line” (V. 15), meaning the rescuer would be a physical descendant of King David.

The sculpture skillfully captures an important truth that in the details of Jesus’ family lineage, God was faithful to do all that He promised. Even more, it’s a reminder that His faithfulness in the past gives us reassurance that He’ll be faithful to fulfill His promises to us in the future.

보상

1921년 예술가 샘 로디아는 그의 ‘와츠 타워’를 짓기 시작했습니다. 33년이 지나 30미터에 달하는 17개의 조각품이 로스엔젤레스에 세워졌습니다. 그러나 음악가 제리 가르시아는 로디아가 평생 만든 것을 폄하했습니다. 그는 “그런 보상, 네가 죽은 다음에 존재하는 그런 것 말이야.”라고 하면서 “와, 그런 건 나에겐 중요하지 않아.”라고 말했습니다.

예수님의 삶과 그의 메시지는 이렇게 눈앞의 것만 보는 삶과는 근본적으로 다릅니다. 예수님은 우리에게 “풍성한 삶”(요한복음 10:10)을 주시기 위해 오셨고, 다음 생애를 생각하며 지금의 삶을 살라고 가르치셨습니다. “너희를 위하여 보물을 땅에 쌓아 두지 말고, 오직 너희를 위하여 보물을 하늘에 쌓아 두라”(마태복음 6:19-20)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 마치시면서 “그런즉 너희는 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더하시리라”(33절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

‘그것’이 해 아래와 그 너머에서 받는 보상입니다.

THE PAYOFF

In 1921, artist Sam Rodia began construction on his Watts Towers. Thirty-three years later, seventeen sculptures rose as high as thirty meters over Los Angeles. Musician Jerry Garcia was dismissive of Rodia’s lifework. “That’s the payoff,” said Garcia. “That thing that exists after you’re dead.” Then he said, “Wow, that’s not it for me.”

So what was the payoff for him? His bandmate Bob Weir summed up their philosophy: “In eternity, nothing will be remembered of you. So why not just have fun?”

A wealthy, wise man once tried to find the “payoff” by doing everything he possibly could. He wrote, “I said to myself, ‘Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good’ ” (ECCLESIASTES 2:1). But he noted, “The wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered” (V. 16). He concluded, “The work that is done under the sun was grievous to me” (V. 17).

The life and message of Jesus radically counter such shortsighted living. Jesus came to give us “life to the full” (JOHN 10:10) and taught us to live this life with the next one in view. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,” He said. “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven” (MATTHEW 6:19-20). Then He summed it up: “Seek first [God’s] kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (V. 33).

That’s the payoff—both under the sun and beyond.

“덴버 너기츠(역주: 미국 프로농구팀)의 목소리”의 주인공인 그 팀의 목사 카일 스펠러는 챔피언십 농구 경기 동안 시끄러우리만큼 열정적으로 방송하는 것으로 가장 잘 알려져 있습니다. “가자!” 하고 마이크에 대고 외치면 경기장을 찾은 수 천 농구 팬들뿐 아니라 수 백만 청취자와 시청자가 그의 목소리에 열광합니다. 이렇게 스펠러는 2022 년 올스타 게임의 아나운서로 지명되었습니다. 그는 말합니다. “나는 관중의 마음을 읽고 홈경기의 분위기를 만들어 내는 법을 알지요.” 그런데 이렇게 멋진 음성으로 텔리비전과 라디오 광고에도 나오는 그의 한마디 한마디는 모든 것이 하나님의 영광을 드러내기 위한 것입니다. 스펠러는 그의 일을 “오직 한 분이신 그 청취자를 위해 하는 것”이라고 말합니다.

바울 사도는 골로새 교회를 향해 이와 비슷한 윤리를 강조해 말했습니다. 그 교회는 그리스도의 하나님 되심과 그의 다스리는 권세에 대한 의심이 신자들의 실생활 속에까지 스며들어 있었습니다. 이와 반대로 바울은 “무엇을 하든지 말에나 일에나 다 주 예수의 이름으로 하고 그를 힘입어 하나님 아버지께 감사하라”(골로새서 3:17)고 했습니다.

바울은 이어서 “무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 말라”(23절)고 했습니다. 카일 스펠러는 자신의 일을 그렇게 한다고 말합니다. “내가 이 일을 하는 목적도 그것입니다... 아나운서는 케익에 크림을 발라주는 역할이지요.” 하나님을 위한 우리의 모든 일은 듣고 계신 그 한 분에게 아름답게 들릴 수 있습니다.

AN AUDIENCE OF ONE

As the “voice of the Denver Nuggets,” team chaplain Kyle Speller is most known for his rip-roaring, public address announcing during the championship basketball club’s games. “Let’s go!” he thunders into the mic, and thousands of onsite NBA fans, as well as millions more watching or listening to the action, react to the voice that earned Speller’s nomination as the 2022 All-Star Game PA Announcer. “I know how to feel the crowd and kind of set that home court atmosphere,” he says. Still, every word of his voice artistry—featured also in TV and radio commercials—is to glorify God. His work, Speller adds, is “just doing everything for an audience of One.”

The apostle Paul stressed a similar ethic to the Colossian church, whose members let doubts about Christ’s divinity and sovereignty seep into even their practical lives. Instead, wrote Paul, in “whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (COLOSSIANS 3:17).

Paul added, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” (V. 23). For Kyle Speller, that includes his role as a chaplain, of which he says, “That’s kind of my purpose here . . . and the announcing is the icing on the cake.” Our own work for God can be just as sweet for our audience of One.

빵에 바른 버터

J. R. R. 톨킨의 소설 ‘반지의 제왕: 반지 원정대’를 보면, 악한 힘을 가진 마법 반지를 육십 년이나 지니고 다녔던 빌보 배긴스에게 반지를 지닌 효과가 드디어 나타나기 시작합니다. 자기를 천천히 녹아내리게 하는 힘을 이기지 못한 그는 마법사 간달프에게 이렇게 말합니다. “왜, 이렇게 가늘어지나요, 축 늘어지는 것 같아요, 커다란 빵에 얇게 녹여 바른 버터처럼 말이에요.” 그래서 그는 살던 집을 떠나 어느 “평화롭고 조용하며 성가시게 하는 친척들도 없는” 쉴만한 곳을 찾아 나서기로 합니다.

톨킨의 이 이야기는 구약의 한 선지자 이야기를 생각하게 합니다. 거짓 선지자들과 싸우다 지친 엘리야는 이세벨로부터 도망을 다니며 너무나 쉼이 필요했습니다. 기진맥진한 그는 “여호와여 이제는 다 되었습니다”(열왕기상 19:4, 쉬운성경) 하며 하나님께 죽게 해달라고 했습니다. 하나님은 천사를 보내어 잠을 자는 그를 깨워서 먹고 마시게 했습니다. 그는 다시 잠들었다 일어나 천사가 준 음식을 더 먹었습니다. 활력을 찾은 그는 사십 일을 걸어 하나님의 산으로 갈 힘이 생겼습니다.

우리도 지쳤을 때에 하나님께 진정한 힘의 회복을 구할 수 있습니다. 하나님이 채워주실 희망과 평화와 안식을 간구하며 우리 몸을 우리가 보살펴야 할 것입니다. 천사가 와서 엘리야를 도운 것처럼 우리도 하나님께서 친히 오셔서 힘주실 것을 믿습니다(마태복음 11:28 참조).

SCRAPED BUTTER

In J. R. R. Tolkien’s book The Fellowship of the Rings, Bilbo Baggins starts showing the effects of carrying, for six decades, a magical ring with dark powers. Weighed down by its slowly corrosive nature, he says to the wizard Gandalf, “Why, I feel all thin, sort of stretched, if you know what I mean: like butter that has been scraped over too much bread.” He decides to leave his home in search of rest, somewhere “in peace and quiet, without a lot of relatives prying around.”

This aspect of Tolkien’s story reminds me of an Old Testament prophet’s experience. On the run from Jezebel and wrung out after his battle with false prophets, Elijah badly needed some rest. Feeling depleted, he asked God to let him die, saying, “I have had enough, Lord” (1 KINGS 19:4). After he fell asleep, God’s angel woke him so he could eat and drink. He slept again, and then ate more of the food provided by the angel. Revitalized, he had enough energy for the forty-day walk to the mountain of God.

When we feel scraped thin, we too can look to God for true refreshment. We might need to care for our bodies while we also ask Him to fill us with His hope, peace, and rest. Even as the angel tended to Elijah, we can trust that God will impart His refreshing presence on us (SEE MATTHEW 11:28).

하나님께서 공급하심

한 살에서 열세 살 사이의 네 남매가 2023년 6월 콜롬비아의 아마존 밀림에서 살아서 발견됐을 때 세상은 놀랐습니다. 아이들은 비행기 추락 사고로 어머니를 잃고서 40일을 살아남았습니다. 밀림의 거친 지형을 잘 알았던 아이들은 야생 동물을 피해 큰 나무 둥치에 숨어 지내며 냇물과 빗물을 병에 담아 물을 마련하고 비행기 잔해에서 찾아낸 카사바 가루를 먹으면서 지냈습니다. 아이들은 또한 먹어도 되는 야생 과일과 씨앗을 가릴 줄도 알았습니다.

하나님께서 이 아이들을 돌보신 것입니다.

이들의 놀라운 이야기는 하나님이 이스라엘 민족을 사막에서 40년 동안 기적과 같이 지켜주신 이야기를 떠올려줍니다. 이 이야기는 창세기와 민수기에 기록되어 있고 성경의 여러 곳에서 언급하고 있습니다. 하나님은 이스라엘 백성을 지켜주시며 하나님이 그들의 하나님이심을 알게 하셨습니다.

하나님은 쓴 물을 단물로 바꿔 주셨고, 두 번이나 바위에서 물을 내셨고, 낮에는 구름기둥으로 밤에는 불기둥으로 그의 백성을 인도하셨습니다. 하나님은 또한 그들에게 만나를 내려 주셨습니다. “모세가 그들에게 이르되 이는 여호와께서 너희에게 주어 먹게 하신 양식이라. 여호와께서 이같이 명령하시기를 너희 각 사람은 먹을 만큼만 이것을 거둘지니”(출애굽기 16:15-16) 라고 기록되었습니다.

같은 하나님께서 우리에게도 “일용할 양식”을 주십니다(마태복음 6:11). 우리는 하나님이 “그리스도 예수 안에서 영광 가운데 그 풍성한 대로”(빌립보서 4:19) 우리의 필요를 채워주시는 것을 믿습니다. 우리가 섬기는 하나님은 얼마나 크신지요!

GOD’S PROVISION

The world was amazed when four siblings ages one to thirteen were found alive in Colombia’s Amazon jungle in June 2023. The siblings had survived forty days in the jungle after a plane crash, which killed their mother. The children, who were familiar with the jungle’s harsh terrain, hid from wild animals in tree trunks, collected water from streams and rain in bottles, and ate food such as cassava flour from the wreckage. They also knew which wild fruits and seeds were safe to eat.

God sustained the siblings.

Their incredible story reminds me of how God miraculously sustained the Israelites in the desert for forty years, which is recorded in the books of Exodus and Numbers and mentioned throughout the Bible. He preserved their lives so that they would know He was their God.

God turned bitter spring water into drinkable water, provided water from a rock twice, and guided His people in a pillar of cloud by day and pillar of fire by night. He also provided manna for them. “Moses said to them, ‘It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat. This is what the Lord has commanded: Everyone is to gather as much as they need’ ” (EXODUS 16:15-16).

The same God provides us with “our daily bread” (MATTHEW 6:11). We can trust Him to provide for our needs “according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (PHILIPPIANS 4:19). What a mighty God we serve!
