시련 중에도 감사

나는 암 투병 이야기를 온라인에 게시하고 있는 동료 작가를 지켜보며 기도하고 있습니다. 그 작가는 신체적 고통과 어려움에 대해 계속해서 알려주는 일과, 성경말씀과 찬양과 함께 기도 요청하는 일을 번갈아 가며 올리고 있습니다. 병원에서 치료를 기다리는 모습이나 머리가 빠져 집에서 헤어밴드를 쓰고 있는 모습 속에서도 용기 있게 미소 짓고 있는 그녀가 매우 아름답습니다. 그녀는 시련이 닥칠 때마다 다른 사람들에게 시련 중에도 하나님을 신뢰하도록 격려하는 것을 결코 빠뜨리는 법이 없습니다.

우리가 어려움을 겪을 때 감사하고 하나님을 찬양할 이유를 찾기 어려울 수도 있습니다. 하지만 시편 100편은 어떤 상황에도 우리가 기뻐하고 하나님을 찬양해야 할 이유를 제시해 줍니다. 시편 기자는 말합니다. “여호와가 우리 하나님이신 줄 너희는 알지어다 그는 우리를 지으신 이요 우리는 그의 것이니 그의 백성이요 그의 기르시는 양이로다”(3절). 그리고 “여호와는 선하시니 그의 인자하심이 영원하고 그의 성실하심이 대대에 이르리로다”(5절)라고 덧붙여 말합니다.

우리가 어떤 시련을 겪고 있든 하나님께서 우리의 상한 마음에 가까이 계시다는 것을 알면 위안을 얻을 수 있습니다(시편 34:18). 우리가 기도와 성경읽기를 통해 하나님과 함께 보내는 시간이 더 많아질수록, “감사함으로 그의 문에 들어가며 찬송함으로 그의 궁정에 들어가서 그에게 감사하며 그의 이름을 송축할”(시편 100:4) 일이 더 많아질 것입니다. 하나님은 신실하신 분이기에 우리는 어려운 시기에 있을 때에도 “여호와께 기쁨으로 외칠”(1절, 현대인의 성경) 수 있습니다.

BEING THANKFUL DESPITE TRIALS

I’ve been following and praying for a fellow writer who’s been posting online about her cancer journey. She alternates between sharing updates about her physical pain and challenges and sharing prayer requests with Scripture and praises to God. It’s beautiful to see her courageous smile whether she’s in the hospital awaiting treatments or at home wearing a bandana because her hair is falling out. With each challenge, she never fails to encourage others to trust God during trials.

When we’re going through difficulties, it may be challenging to find reasons to be grateful and to praise God. However, Psalm 100 gives us reasons to rejoice and give God praise despite our circumstances. The psalmist says: “Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture” (V. 3). He adds, “For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations” (V. 5).

Whatever our trial, we can take comfort knowing that God is near to our broken hearts (34:18). The more time we spend with God in prayer and reading the Bible, the more we’ll be able to “enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise” and “give thanks to him and praise his name” (100:4). We can “shout for joy to the Lord” (V. 1) even and perhaps especially when we’re in a difficult season because our God is faithful.

CHARACTER CHANGE

Family gathered around the bed of Dominique Bouhours, a seventeenth-century grammarian who was dying. As he took his final breaths, he reportedly said, “I am about to—or I am going to—die; either expression is correct.” Who would care about grammar on their deathbed? Only someone who cared about grammar his entire life.

By the time we reach old age, we’re largely set in our ways. We’ve had a lifetime for our choices to harden into habits that calcify into character—good or bad. We are who we’ve chosen to become.

It’s easier to develop godly habits while our character is young and flexible. Peter urges, “Make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, selfcontrol; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love” (2 PETER 1:5-7). Practice these virtues, and “you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (V. 11).

Which traits in Peter’s list are most alive in you? Which qualities still need work? We can’t truly change who we’ve become, but Jesus can. Ask Him to transform and empower you. It may be a slow, arduous journey, but Jesus specializes in providing exactly what we need. Ask Him to transform your character so you become more and more like Him.

샬롬을 전하는 사자들

2015년 콜로라도 스프링스 지역의 사역 단체들이 협력하여 그 도시를 섬기기 위해 코실러브유(COSILoveYou)라는 단체를 만들었습니다. 이 단체는 매년 가을 시티서브(CityServe)라는 행사에 믿는 사람들을 보내어 지역사회를 섬기고 있습니다.

몇 년 전 나는 내 아이들과 함께 시티서브 행사 동안 시내에 있는 한 초등학교에 배정되어 청소를 하고 잡초를 뽑았습니다. 그리고 한 미화 작업을 꾸며 보았는데, 산을 흉내 내어 사슬로 연결된 울타리에 알록달록한 플라스틱 테이프를 붙이고 나니 단순하지만 놀랍도록 아름다워 보였습니다.

운전하며 그 학교를 지나칠 때마다, 나는 우리의 별것 아닌 미화 작업을 보며 예레미야 29장 말씀을 떠올립니다. 거기서 하나님은 백성들에게 그곳에 정착하고, 살고 있는 도시를 섬기라고 명령하셨습니다. 하나님은 그들이 포로로 잡혀가 그곳에 살고 싶어 하지 않았음에도 그렇게 명령하신 것입니다.

예레미야 선지자는 말합니다. “너희는 내가 사로잡혀 가게 한 그 성읍의 평안을 구하고 그를 위하여 여호와께 기도하라 이는 그 성읍이 평안함으로 너희도 평안할 것임이라”(7절). 여기서 ‘평안’이라는 말은 히브리어로 ‘샬롬’ 입니다. 그리고 이 말에는 오직 하나님의 선하심과 구원만이 가져다 줄 수 있는 온전함과 번영의 개념이 내포되어 있습니다.

놀랍게도, 하나님은 우리 각자를 우리가 있는 바로 그곳에서 샬롬을 전하는 그분의 사자로 부르고 계십니다. 우리는 하나님께서 우리를 두신 그 자리에서 간단하지만 구체적인 방법으로 아름다움을 만들어내고 구원을 실천하도록 부름을 받았습니다.

AGENTS OF SHALOM

In 2015, local ministries in Colorado Springs, Colorado, teamed up to serve the city, and COSILoveYou was born. Each fall, in an event called CityServe, the group sends believers out to serve the community.

Several years ago, my children and I were assigned to a downtown elementary school during CityServe. We cleaned. We pulled weeds. And we worked on an art project, lacing colored plastic tape through a chain-link fence in a way that approximated mountains. Simple, but surprisingly beautiful.

Whenever I drive past the school, our humble art project reminds me of Jeremiah 29. There, God instructed His people to settle down and serve the city they were in. He commanded this even though they were in exile and didn’t want to be there.

The prophet said, “Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper” (V. 7). The word peace here is the Hebrew word shalom. And it encompasses the idea of the wholeness and flourishing that only God’s goodness and redemption can bring.

Amazingly, God invites each of us to be His agents of shalom— right where we are. We’re invited to create beauty and practice redemption in simple, concrete ways in the spaces He’s placed us.

지혜롭게 선택하기

어머니가 사시던 집을 팔까 말까? 사랑하는 홀어머니가 세상을 떠난 후 그런 결정을 내리기가 많이 힘들었습니다. 내 마음은 감상적이 되어 갔습니다. 여동생과 함께 지금까지 어머니의 빈 집을 2년간 청소하고 수리해 왔었는데, 결국 집을 팔기로 결정하였습니다. 그 때가 2008년도였는데 세계적인 경기 침체로 구매자가 없었습니다. 우리는 계속해서 가격을 내렸지만 여전히 어떤 구매 제의도 들어오지 않았습니다. 그러던 어느 날 아침 성경을 읽던 중 다음 구절이 눈길을 사로잡았습니다. “소가 없으면 구유는 깨끗하려니와 소의 힘으로 얻는 것이 많으니라”(잠언 14:4).

이 잠언서는 농사에 관해 말한 것이었지만 나는 그것이 주는 메시지에 이끌렸습니다. 빈 외양간은 깔끔할지 모르지만, 외양간에 가축이 있어서 “혼잡할” 때 비로소 농작물을 수확할 수 있습니다. 우리의 경우에는 가치와 가족 유산이라는 작물입니다. 나는 여동생에게 전화를 걸어 말했습니다. “우리가 엄마 집을 가지고 있으면 어떨까? 집을 임대해 줄 수도 있어.”

이 결정은 우리에게 있어서 놀라운 선택이었습니다. 엄마의 집을 투자 대상으로 삼을 계획이 우리에게 없었기 때문입니다. 하지만 영적 지침서인 성경은 실용적인 지혜를 제공해주기도 합니다. 다윗이 “여호와여, 주의 길을 보여 주시고, 내가 가야 할 길을 가르쳐 주소서”(시편 25:4, 쉬운 성경)라고 기도했듯이 말입니다.

우리의 선택으로 여동생과 나는 많은 사랑스러운 가족들에게 엄마의 집을 임대해 주는 축복을 받았습니다. 우리는 또한 성경은 우리가 결정을 내리는 데 도움이 된다는, 이런 삶을 변화시키는 진리도 배웠습니다. 시편 기자는 “주의 말씀은 내 발에 등이요 내 길에 빛이니이다”(시편 119:105)라고 했습니다. 우리가 하나님의 빛 가운데 걸을 수 있기를 소망합니다.

MAKING WISE CHOICES

Sell my late mother’s house? That decision burdened my heart after my beloved, widowed mother passed away. Sentiment drove my feelings. Still, my sister and I spent two years cleaning and repairing her empty home, resigned to sell it. This was in 2008, and a global recession left us with no buyers. We kept dropping the price but got no offers. Then, while reading my Bible one morning, this passage grabbed my eye: “Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox” (PROVERBS 14:4 ESV).

The proverb spoke of farming, but I was intrigued by its message. An unoccupied stall stays neat, but only with the “mess” of inhabitants would it yield a harvest of crops. Or, for us, a crop of value and family legacy. Calling my sister, I asked, “What if we keep Mama’s house? We could rent it.”

The choice surprised us. We had no plans to turn Mom’s home into an investment. But the Bible, as a spiritual guide, also offers practical wisdom. As David prayed, “Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow” (PSALM 25:4 NLT).

With our choice, my sister and I have been blessed to rent Mama’s home to many lovely families. We also learned this lifechanging truth: Scripture helps guide our decisions. “Your word is a lamp for my feet,” wrote the psalmist, “a light on my path” (PSALM 119:105). May we walk in God’s light.

정해진 약속

1963년 11월 22일, 미국 대통령 존 F 케네디와 철학자이자 작가인 올더스 헉슬리, 기독교 변증가 C.S. 루이스가 모두 사망했습니다. 잘 알려진 세 남자는 완전히 다른 세계관을 가지고 있었습니다. 무신론자 헉슬리는 여전히 동양의 신비주의에 빠져 있었고, 케네디는 로마 가톨릭 신자였지만 인본주의 철학을 고수했습니다. 그리고 루이스는 예전에는 무신론자였지만 성공회 신자로서 예수님을 믿는 신앙을 공개적으로 고백했습니다. 이 유명한 세 사람 모두 같은 날 정해진 죽음을 맞이한 것처럼 죽음은 누구도 차별하지 않습니다.

THE APPOINTMENT

On November 22, 1963, US president John F. Kennedy, philosopher and writer Aldous Huxley, and Christian apologist C. S. Lewis all died. Three well-known men with radically different worldviews. Huxley, an agnostic, still dabbled in Eastern mysticism. Kennedy, though a Roman Catholic, held to a humanistic philosophy. And Lewis was a former atheist who as an Anglican became an outspoken believer in Jesus. Death is no respecter of persons as all three of these well-known men faced their appointment with death on the same day.

The Bible says that death entered the human experience when Adam and Eve disobeyed in the garden of Eden (GENESIS 3)—a sad reality that has marked human history. Death is the great equalizer or, as one person put it, the appointment that no one can avoid. This is the point of Hebrews 9:27, where we read, “People are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.”

Where do we find hope about our own appointment with death and what follows? In Christ. Romans 6:23 captures this truth perfectly: “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” How did this gift of God become available? Jesus, the Son of God, died to destroy death and rose from the grave to offer us life forever (2 TIMOTHY 1:10).

사람들에게 예수님을 전함

바울은 유대인의 정결 의식을 위해 성전에 갔습니다(사도행전 21:26). 그러나 그가 율법에 반하여 가르치고 있다고 생각한 사람들이 선동하여 그의 목숨을 빼앗으려고 했습니다(31절). 로마 군인들이 급히 개입하여 바울을 체포하고 결박한 후 성전에서 그를 데려갔습니다. 무리들은 “그 자를 없애 버리라”(36절, 새번역)고 외쳤습니다.

SPEAK TO THE PEOPLE ABOUT JESUS

Paul had gone to the temple for the Jewish purification ceremony (ACTS 21:26). But some agitators who thought he’d been teaching against the Law sought to take his life (V. 31). Roman soldiers quickly got involved and arrested Paul, bound him, and carried him from the temple area—with the mob shouting, “Get rid of him!” (V. 36).

How did the apostle react to this threat? He asked the troops’ commander if he could “speak to the people” (V. 39). When the Roman leader granted permission, Paul, bleeding and bruised, turned to the angry crowd and shared his faith in Jesus (22:1-16).

That was two thousand years ago—an old Bible story that we might find hard to relate to. More recently, a man named Peter was arrested while visiting a jailed friend who believes in Jesus in a country where believers are regularly persecuted. Peter was tossed into a dark prison cell and blindfolded during interrogations. When the blindfold was removed, he saw four soldiers with guns pointed at him. Peter’s response? He saw it as “a perfect . . . opportunity to share his faith.”

Paul and this modern-day Peter point out a hard, vital truth. Even if God allows us to experience tough times—even persecution— our task remains: “Preach the gospel” (MARK 16:15). He will be with us and will give us the wisdom and power to share our faith.

이 마라톤 주자처럼 전도서의 저자는 인생의 경주를 다른 사람들과 함께 함으로 오는 몇 가지 중요한 이로운 점을 상기시켜 줍니다. 솔로몬은 “두 사람이 한 사람보다 낫다”(전도서 4:9)는 원리를 밝히면서, 함께 노력하고 함께 땀 흘려 수고하는 여러 가지 이점을 강조합니다. 그는 또 동역함으로써 “수고함으로 좋은 상을 얻을 것”(9절)이라고도 했습니다. 동료는 어려울 때 함께하면서 “동무를 붙들어 일으켜줍니다”(10절). 어둡고 추운 밤에도 친구들은 함께 모여 “따뜻하게”(11절) 지낼 수 있습니다. 그리고 위험한 상황에도 두 사람이면 적의 공격을 “능히 막아낼 수 있습니다”(12절, 새번역). 서로의 삶이 함께 엮여 있는 사람들은 큰 힘을 지닐 수 있습니다.

우리는 모두 연약하기 때문에 예수님을 믿는 신자들의 공동체가 주는 강력한 지원을 받아 안전을 꾀할 필요가 있습니다. 주님이 우리를 인도하시는 대로 다 함께 계속 나아갑시다!

STRONG SUPPORT IN CHRIST

A runner in the London Marathon experienced why it’s vital not to run the big race alone. After months of grueling preparation, the man wanted to finish strong. But as he stumbled toward the finish line, he found himself doubled over from exhaustion and on the verge of collapsing. Before he fell to the ground, two fellow marathoners grabbed his arms—one on his left and the other on his right—and helped the struggling runner complete the course.

Like that runner, the writer of Ecclesiastes reminds us of several important advantages that come from having others run the race of life with us. Solomon set forth the principle that “two are better than one” (ECCLESIASTES 4:9). He shed a spotlight on the advantages of joint efforts and mutual toil. He also wrote that partnership can lead to “a good return for their labor” (V. 9). During times of difficulty, a companion is there to “help the other up” (V. 10). When nights are dark and cold, friends can huddle together to “keep warm” (V. 11). And, during danger, two “can defend themselves” against an assailant (V. 12). Those whose lives are woven together can possess great strength.

With all our weaknesses and frailties, we need the strong support and security of a community of believers in Jesus. Let’s press on together as He leads us!

순종은 선택

네덜란드의 겨울은 눈이 많이 오는 일은 거의 없지만 운하가 얼어붙을 정도로 추울 때가 있습니다. 남편 톰이 거기서 자랄 때 부모님이 정한 가족 규칙 한 가지가 있었습니다. “말이 올라갈 수 있을 정도로 얼음이 두꺼워질 때까지는 얼음 위에 올라가서는 안 된다.”는 것이었습니다. 말은 가면서 자신들 뒤에 증거를 남기기 때문에, 톰과 친구들은 길에서 말의 배설물을 찾아서 그것을 얇은 얼음 위에 던져 놓고 얼음 위에서 놀았습니다. 다치지도 않았고 들키지도 않았지만, 그들이 규칙을 따르지 않았다는 것은 그들 마음속으로도 잘 알고 있었습니다.

순종하기가 언제나 쉬운 것은 아닙니다. 순종하느냐 않느냐의 선택은 의무감이나 벌에 대한 두려움에서 결정될 수 있습니다. 하지만 또한 권위 있는 사람들에 대한 사랑과 존경심에서 순종하기로 선택할 수도 있습니다.

요한복음 14장에서 예수님은 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하시며 도전을 주셨습니다. “사람이 나를 사랑하면 내 말을 지키리니... 나를 사랑하지 아니하는 자는 내 말을 지키지 아니하나니”(23-24절). 순종하는 것이 언제나 쉬운 선택은 아니지만, 우리 안에 거하시는 성령님의 권능이 우리에게 주님께 순종하려는 소망과 능력을 주십니다(15-17절). 우리는 그분의 권능에 힘입어 벌에 대한 두려움이 아닌 사랑으로 우리를 가장 사랑하시는 그분의 명령을 계속해서 따를 수 있습니다.

OBEDIENCE IS A CHOICE

Winters in the Netherlands seldom bring a lot of snow, but it can get cold enough to freeze over the canals. When my husband, Tom, was growing up there, his parents had a family rule: “Stay off the ice until it is thick enough to hold the weight of a horse.” Because horses would leave evidence of their presence behind, Tom and his buddies decided to get some manure off the road. They threw it on the thin ice and ventured out onto the surface. No harm came to them, nor were they discovered, but they knew in their hearts they’d been disobedient.

Obedience doesn’t always come naturally. The choice to obey or not to obey can spring from a sense of duty or fear of punishment. But we can also choose to obey out of love and respect for those in authority over us.

In John 14, Jesus challenged His disciples by saying, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. . . . Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching” (VV. 23-24). It’s not always an easy choice to obey, but the power of the Spirit living within us gives us the desire and ability to obey Him (VV. 15-17). With His enablement, we can continue to follow the commands of the One who loves us most—not out of fear of punishment, but out of love.

트레는 피트니스 센터의 정규 회원 답게 어깨가 벌어지고, 근육이 단단하며, 팔 근육이 내 허벅지만큼 굵어 보입니다. 그의 건강한 몸을 보니 그와 영적인 대화를 나누고 싶었습니다. 나는 그에게 헌신적으로 몸을 단련함으로 하나님과도 건강한 관계를 가질 수 있는지 물었습니다. 깊은 대화는 하지 못했지만, 트레는 “그의 삶 가운데 하나님이 계시다”고 시인했습니다. 대화가 길어지면서 그는 400파운드(약 180킬로그램)나 되어 건강하지 못했던 이전의 자신의 사진을 보여주었는데, 운동하며 생활 방식을 바꾸자 신체적으로 놀라운 일이 일어난 것입니다.

디모데전서 4:6-10은 육체적인 훈련과 함께 영적인 훈련에도 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. “경건에 이르도록 네 자신을 연단하라 육체의 연단은 약간의 유익이 있으나 경건은 범사에 유익하니 금생과 내생에 약속이 있느니라”(7-8절). 우리가 외적인 부분만 단련해서는 하나님과의 관계를 변화시킬 수 없습니다. 우리의 영적인 훈련은 마음에 달린 문제입니다. 그것은 우리가 예수님을 믿기로 결심하고 그분을 통해 용서받는 것에서 비롯되며, 바로 그 시점부터 경건한 삶을 위한 훈련이 시작됩니다. 이 훈련에는 “믿음의 말씀과... 좋은 교훈으로 양육을 받는”(6절) 것과, 하나님의 힘에 의지해 하나님 아버지를 영화롭게 하는 삶을 사는 것이 포함됩니다.

SPIRITUAL FITNESS

Tre is a regular at the fitness center and it shows. His shoulders are wide, his muscles pronounced, and his upper arms close to the size of my thighs. His physical condition prompted me to engage him in a spiritual conversation. I asked him if his commitment to physical fitness in some way mirrored a healthy relationship with God. Though we didn’t go too deep, Tre did acknowledge “God in his life.” We talked long enough for him to show me a picture of the four-hundred-pound, unfit, unhealthy version of himself. A change in his lifestyle had worked wonders physically.

In 1 Timothy 4:6-10, physical and spiritual training come into focus. “Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” (VV. 7-8). One’s external fitness doesn’t change our status with God. Our spiritual fitness is a matter of the heart. It begins with a decision to believe in Jesus, through whom we receive forgiveness. From that point, training for godly living begins. This includes being “nourished on the truths of the faith and of . . . good teaching” (V. 6) and, by God’s strength, living a life that honors our heavenly Father.

도움을 배달하기

헤더가 팀의 집으로 주문 음식을 배달하러 갔을 때 팀은 포장된 음식 가방의 매듭을 풀어 달라고 부탁했습니다. 팀은 몇 년 전에 뇌졸중을 앓아 더 이상 혼자서 매듭을 풀 수 없었던 것입니다. 헤더는 기쁜 마음으로 도와주었습니다. 헤더는 그날 내내 팀을 자주 떠올리면서 그를 돕기 위해 무언가를 준비해야겠다고 생각했습니다. 나중에 헤더가 문 앞에 격려의 글과 함께 따뜻한 코코아와 빨간 담요를 두고 간 것을 팀이 발견하고는 감격의 눈물을 흘렸습니다.

헤더의 배달은 그가 원래 예상했던 것보다 훨씬 더 의미 있는 일이 되었습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 “블레셋 사람들을 대하여 전열을 벌였을” (사무엘상 17:2) 때, 이새가 어린 아들 다윗을 보내어 그의 형들에게 음식을 전해주었을 때에도 마찬가지였습니다. 다윗이 빵과 치즈를 가지고 도착해 보니 골리앗이 매일 조롱하며 하나님의 백성들에게 두려움을 심어주고 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다(8-10, 16, 24절). 다윗은 골리앗이 “살아 계시는 하나님의 군대”(26절)에 대적하는 모습에 분노하여 사울 왕에게 말했습니다. “그로 말미암아 사람이 낙담하지 말 것이라 주의 종이 가서 저 블레셋 사람과 싸우리이다”(32절).

하나님은 때때로 우리 일상의 상황에 따라 하나님이 원하시는 곳에 우리를 두어 사용하십니다. 우리의 눈과 마음을 열어 하나님께서 우리가 어디서 어떻게 누구를 섬기기 원하시는지 살피도록 합시다.

DELIVERING HELP

When Heather’s job took her to Tim’s house to deliver his take-out meal, he asked her to help him untie the knot in the food bag. Tim had suffered a stroke a few years prior and no longer had the ability to untie the knot himself. Heather cheerfully obliged. Throughout the rest of her day, Heather’s thoughts returned to Tim frequently and she was inspired to assemble a care package for him. When Tim later found the hot cocoa and red blanket she’d left at his door with an encouraging note, he was moved to tears.

Heather’s delivery became much more significant than she originally anticipated. The same was true when Jesse sent his young son David to supply his brothers with food when the Israelites “drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines” (1 SAMUEL 17:2). When David arrived with the bread and cheese, he learned Goliath had been instilling fear in God’s people with his daily taunting (VV. 8-10, 16, 24). David was incensed by Goliath’s defiance of “the armies of the living God” (V. 26) and was moved to respond, saying to King Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him” (V. 32).

God sometimes uses the circumstances of our daily lives to put us in places where He wants to use us. Let’s keep our eyes (and hearts!) open to see where and how He might want us to serve someone.
