그리스도의 영적 갑옷

베일리 목사가 새로 알게 된 친구는 자기가 받은 학대와 중독에 관한 이야기를 그에게 들려주었습니다. 이 젊은 친구는 예수님을 믿는 사람이었지만, 어린 나이에 성적 학대를 당하고 외설물을 접하게 되어 자신이 감당하지 못할 정도로 큰 문제에 시달리고 있었습니다. 그는 지금 필사적으로 도움의 손길을 찾고 있었습니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리는 보이지 않는 악의 세력과 전쟁을 합니다(고린도후서 10:3-6). 이 영적 전쟁을 싸우기 위해 우리에게는 주어진 무기가 있습니다. 그러나 그것은 육신에 속한 무기가 아닙니다. 그와 반대로 우리에게는 “어떤 견고한 진도 무너뜨리는 하나님의 능력”(4절)이 주어졌습니다. 그 말이 무슨 의미일까요? “견고한 진”이란 단단하게 잘 지어진 안전한 곳을 말합니다. 하나님은 우리에게 “오른손에는 공격을, 왼손에는 방어를 위한 의의 무기”(6:7, NLT성경)를 각각 주셨습니다. 에베소서 6:13-18에는 우리를 보호해주는 것들, 곧 성경말씀과 믿음, 구원, 기도, 그리고 성도의 도움이 열거되어 있습니다. 우리보다 크고 강한 세력을 대할 때, 넘어지느냐 마느냐의 차이를 만드는 것은 이 영적 무기들을 얼마나 적절하게 사용하느냐에 달려 있습니다.

하나님은 홀로 감당하기에 너무 힘든 대적과 싸우는 이들을 돕기 위해 상담사나 전문인력을 사용하기도 하시지만, 좋은 소식은 우리가 예수님 안에서 그리고 예수님을 통해서 싸울 때 항복할 필요가 없다는 것입니다. 우리는 하나님의 전신갑주를 입고 있습니다!

OUR ARMOR IN CHRIST

Pastor Bailey’s newfound friend shared with him the story of his abuse and addiction. Though the young man was a believer in Jesus, because of his exposure to sexual abuse and pornography at an early age, he was plagued with a problem that was bigger than he was. And in his desperation, he reached out for help.

As believers in Christ, we wage war with unseen forces of evil (2 CORINTHIANS 10:3-6). But we’ve been given weapons to fight our spiritual battles. They aren’t the weapons of the world, however. On the contrary, we’ve been given “divine power to demolish strongholds” (V. 4). What does that mean? “Strongholds” are wellbuilt, secure places. Our God-given arms include “weapons of righteousness in the right hand for attack and the left hand for defense” (6:7 NLT). Ephesians 6:13-18 expands the list of things that help protect us, including the Scriptures, faith, salvation, prayer, and the support of other believers. When faced with forces bigger and stronger than us, appropriating these munitions can make the difference between standing and stumbling.

God also uses counselors and other professionals to help those who struggle with forces too big to tackle alone. The good news is that in and through Jesus, we needn’t surrender when we struggle. We have the armor of God!

하나님과의 씨름

남편이 세상을 떠난 후 오랜 친구 한 분이 내게 이런 소식을 보내왔습니다. “[앨런은] 하나님과 씨름하던 사람이었어요. 그는 진짜 야곱 같은 분이었고, 내가 지금 그리스도인이 되어 있는 가장 큰 이유이기도 해요.” 앨런이 겪었던 어려움을 족장 야곱의 고난과 비교해본 적은 없었지만, 생각해 보니 맞는 것 같았습니다. 남편은 사는 동안 자신과의 싸움을 계속 했고, 해답을 얻기 위해 하나님과 씨름했습니다. 그는 하나님을 사랑했지만, 하나님께서 그를 사랑하시고 용서하시며 그의 기도를 들으신다는 사실을 언제나 확신하지는 못했습니다. 그럼에도 그는 축복된 삶을 살았으며, 많은 이들에게 긍정적인 영향을 끼쳤습니다.

야곱의 삶은 한마디로 험난했습니다. 그는 형 에서를 속여 장자권을 뺐었습니다. 집을 도망쳐 나온 그는 오랫동안 외삼촌이자 장인인 라반 밑에서 힘들게 일했습니다. 이후 라반을 피해 도망쳐 홀로 남겨진 그는 에서를 만나기가 두려웠습니다. 그때 “하나님의 사자들이 그를 만나는”(창세기 32:1) 하늘의 경험을 하게 됩니다. 그 일은 이전에 그가 하나님으로부터 받은 꿈 (28:10-22)을 상기시켜 주었습니다. 이제 야곱은 인간의 형상을 입은 하나님인 어떤 “사람”과 밤새도록 씨름을 하는 또 다른 경험을 하게 되는데, 그 “사람”은 야곱이 “하나님과 및 사람들과 겨루어 이겼기”(32:28) 때문에 그에게 이스라엘이라는 새 이름을 주었습니다. 하나님은 험난한 여정 내내 야곱과 함께 하셨고 그를 사랑하셨습니다.

우리도 모두 어려움을 겪습니다. 하지만 우리는 혼자가 아니며, 각 시련 중에 하나님께서 함께 하십니다. 하나님을 믿는 자는 사랑받고 용서받고 약속된 영생을 얻게 됩니다(요한복음 3:16). 우리는 하나님을 굳게 붙들어야 합니다.

GRAPPLING WITH GOD

A longtime friend sent me a note after my husband’s death: “[Alan] was . . . a grappler with God. He was a real Jacob and a strong reason why I am a Christian today.” I’d never thought to compare Alan’s struggles with the patriarch Jacob’s, but it fit. Throughout his life, Alan struggled with himself and wrestled with God for answers. He loved God but couldn’t always grasp the truths that He loved him, forgave him, and heard his prayers. Yet his life had its blessings, and he positively influenced many.

Jacob’s life was characterized by struggle. He connived to get his brother Esau’s birthright. He fled home and struggled for years with his kinsman and father-in-law, Laban. Then he fled Laban. He was alone and afraid to meet Esau. Yet he’d just had a heavenly encounter: “The angels of God met him” (GENESIS 32:1), perhaps a reminder of his earlier dream from God (28:10-22). Now Jacob had another encounter: all night he wrestled with a “man,” God in human form, who renamed him Israel, because he “struggled with God and with humans and [overcame]” (32:28). God was with and loved Jacob despite and through it all.

All of us have struggles. But we’re not alone; God is with us in each trial. Those who believe in Him are loved, forgiven, and promised eternal life (JOHN 3:16). We can hold fast to Him.

하늘에 계신 아버지께 알리기

미국의 해리 트루먼 대통령이 제2차 세계대전의 종전을 선언한 지 몇 분 후에 미주리주 그랜드뷰의 한 작은 목조 집에 전화벨이 울렸습니다. 92세의 노부인이 전화를 받으려고 손님에게 잠시 양해를 구했습니다. 그 손님은 그녀가 통화하는 소리를 들었습니다. “여보세요... 응, 괜찮아. 라디오 듣고 있었어... 언제 올 수 있으면 한번 와서 보자... 잘 있어.” 노부인은 손님에게 말했습니다. “[아들] 해리였어요. 해리는 참 착해요. 전화할 줄 알았어요. 걔는 무슨 일을 마치면 항상 나에게 전화하거든요.”

얼마나 성취했든, 나이가 몇 살이든, 우리는 “잘 했어!”라는 격려의 말을 들으려고 부모님께 전화를 걸고 싶어 합니다. 아무리 큰 성공을 거두었을 지라도 우리는 언제나 그들의 아들이요 딸입니다.

안타깝게도 누구나 육신의 부모와 이런 관계를 맺고 있지는 않습니다. 하지만 예수님을 통해 우리는 모두 하나님을 아버지로 삼을 수 있습니다. 우리는 “자녀로 삼으시는 영을 받았기”(로마서 8:15, 새번역) 때문에, 그리스도를 따르는 우리는 하나님의 가족이 되었습니다. 이제 우리는 “하나님의 상속자요 그리스도와 함께 한 상속자”(17절)입니다. 우리는 종의 신분으로 하나님께 말하는 것이 아니라, 예수님이 마지막 절박한 순간에 쓰셨던 “아빠 아버지” (15절; 마가복음 14:36 참조)라는 친근한 이름을 우리도 이제 자유롭게 쓸 수 있습니다.

CALLING OUR HEAVENLY FATHER

Minutes after US President Harry Truman announced the end of World War II, a phone rang in a small clapboard house in Grandview, Missouri. A ninety-two-year-old woman excused herself to take the call. Her guest heard her say, “Hello. . . . Yes, I’m all right. Yes, I’ve been listening to the radio. . . . Now you come and see me if you can. . . . Goodbye.” The elderly woman returned to her guest. “That was [my son] Harry. Harry’s a wonderful man. . . . I knew he’d call. He always calls me after something that happens is over.”

No matter how accomplished, no matter how old, we yearn to call our parents. To hear their affirming words, “Well done!” We may be wildly successful, but we’ll always be their son or daughter.

Sadly, not everyone has this kind of relationship with their earthly parents. But through Jesus, we all can have God as our Father. We who follow Christ are brought into the family of God, for “the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship” (ROMANS 8:15). We’re now “heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” (V. 17). We don’t speak to God as a slave but now have the freedom to use the intimate name Jesus used in His hour of desperate need, “Abba, Father” (V. 15; SEE ALSO MARK 14:36).

인생을 바꿔 주는 하나님의 선물

나는 남편과 함께 청소년 그룹을 만나 성경책을 나눠주며 말했습니다. “하나님은 이 귀한 선물을 사용하여 여러분의 삶을 바꾸어 주실 거예요.” 그날 밤 몇몇 학생들이 요한복음을 함께 읽기로 했습니다. 우리는 계속해서 그 학생들을 집에 초대하여 성경말씀을 함께 읽고 주중 모임에서는 그들을 가르쳤습니다. 십년도 더 지난 후 그때 학생들 중 한 여학생을 만나게 되었는데, “선생님께서 주신 성경을 아직도 읽고 있어요.” 라고 말했습니다. 나는 그녀에게서 믿음이 충만한 삶의 증거를 보았습니다.

하나님은 그의 백성들에게 성경을 읽고 암송하고 어느 구절인지 기억하는 것 이상의 능력을 더해 주십니다. 하나님은 우리가 말씀을 “지켜” 삶으로써 “행실을 깨끗하게” 할 수 있게 하십니다(시편 119:9). 그리고 변치 않는 진리의 말씀으로 우리를 죄에서 해방시켜 변화시키시고, 우리가 하나님을 찾고 순종하기를 바라십니다(10-11절). 우리는 성경말씀을 이해하고 하나님을 알아갈 수 있도록 도와달라고 매일 하나님께 간구할 수 있습니다(12-13절).

GOD’S LIFE-CHANGING GIFT

I greeted our youth group as my husband and I handed out Bibles. “God will use these priceless gifts to change your life,” I said. That night, a few students committed to reading the gospel of John together. We continued inviting the group to read Scripture at home while we taught them during our weekly meetings. More than a decade later, I saw one of our students. “I still use the Bible you gave me,” she said. I saw the evidence in her faith-filled life.

God empowers His people to go beyond reading, reciting, and remembering where to find Bible verses. He enables us to “stay on the path of purity” by living “according to” the Scriptures (PSALM 119:9). God wants us to seek and obey Him as He uses His unchanging truth to free us from sin and change us (VV. 10-11). We can ask God daily to help us know Him and understand what He says in the Bible (VV. 12-13).

When we recognize the priceless value of living God’s way, we can “rejoice” in His instruction “as one rejoices in great riches” (VV. 14-15). Like the psalmist, we can sing, “I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word” (V. 16). As we invite the Holy Spirit to empower us, we can savor each moment spent prayerfully reading the Bible—God’s life-changing gift to us.

초막절 야영

우리는 서아프리카의 끝없는 하늘에 펼쳐진 별들 아래에서 야영을 했습니다. 건기에는 텐트가 필요하지 않지만 불은 꼭 필요했습니다. 아버지는 막대기로 장작을 밀어 넣으며 “절대로 불을 꺼뜨리면 안 돼.”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 불이 야생동물의 접근을 막아주기 때문입니다. 하나님의 창조물들은 정말 놀랍지만, 야영장에 표범이나 뱀이 나타나는 것은 누구도 원하지 않습니다.

아버지는 가나 북부 지역의 선교사였고, 모든 것을 가르침의 순간으로 만드는 타고난 은사가 있었습니다. 캠핑 때도 예외는 아니었습니다.

하나님도 야영을 통해 그분의 백성들을 가르치셨습니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 일년에 한 번, 일주일간 “종려나무 가지와 무성한 나무 가지와 시내 버들”(레위기 23:40)로 만든 초막에서 지내야 했습니다. 거기에는 두 가지 목적이 있었습니다. 하나님은 말씀하셨습니다. “이스라엘에서 난 자는 다 초막에 거주할지니 이는 내가 이스라엘 자손을 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 내던 때에 초막에 거주하게 한 줄을 너희 대대로 알게 함이니라”(42-43절). 하지만 그것은 또한 축제이기도 했습니다. “너희의 하나님 여호와 앞에서 이레 동안 즐거워할 것이라”(40절).

누군가에게는 야영이 즐겁지 않을 수도 있겠지만, 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님의 선하심을 즐겁게 기억할 수 있도록 일주일 간의 야영 기간을 정하셨습니다. 우리는 명절이 갖는 참 의미를 쉽게 잊어버립니다. 우리의 축제는 사랑의 하나님의 성품을 떠올릴 수 있는 즐거운 행사들이 될 수 있습니다. 하나님은 즐거움도 창조하셨습니다.

A NATIONAL CAMPOUT

We camped under the stars, with nothing between us and the infinite West African sky. No need for a tent in the dry season. But the fire was crucial. “Never let the fire go out,” Dad said, prodding the logs with a stick. Fire kept wildlife at a distance. God’s creatures are wonderful, but you never want a leopard or a snake meandering through your campsite.

Dad was a missionary to Ghana’s Upper Region, and he had a knack for turning everything into a teaching moment. Camping was no exception.

God used campouts as a teaching point for His people too. Once a year, for an entire week, the Israelites were to live in shelters made of “branches from luxuriant trees—from palms, willows and other leafy trees” (LEVITICUS 23:40). The purpose was twofold. God told them, “All native-born Israelites are to live in such shelters so your descendants will know that I had the Israelites live in temporary shelters when I brought them out of Egypt” (VV. 42-43). But the event was also to be festive. “Rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days” (V. 40).

Camping may not be your idea of fun, but God instituted a one-week campout for the Israelites as a joyful way to recall His goodness. We easily forget the meaning at the heart of our holidays. Our festivals can be joyous reminders of the character of our loving God. He created fun too.

기쁨으로 섬기기

미국 대통령 조지 W. 부시의 비서실장이었던 앤드류 카드는 한 인터뷰에서 백악관에서의 자기 역할에 대해 이렇게 설명했습니다. “직원들의 사무실마다 ‘우리는 기쁜 마음으로 대통령을 위해 일한다’라는 문구가 걸려 있습니다. 하지만 그것은 대통령을 기쁘게 하거나 그의 환심을 사려고 일한다는 의미가 아닙니다. 그보다는 대통령이 직무를 수행하기 위해 알아야 할 것들을 말씀드리는 역할을 하는 것입니다.” 그 직무란 바로 미 합중국을 통치하는 것을 말합니다.

우리는 해야 할 너무 많은 역할과 아주 복잡한 인간 관계 속에서, 바울 사도가 자주 권면한 것처럼 연합하여 서로를 세워주기보다는 서로의 환심을 사는 데에 쉽게 빠져듭니다. 바울은 에베소서 4장에서 이렇게 말합니다. “그가 어떤 사람은 사도로, 어떤 사람은 선지자로, 어떤 사람은 복음 전하는 자로, 어떤 사람은 목사와 교사로 삼으셨으니 이는 성도를 온전하게 하여 봉사의 일을 하게 하며 그리스도의 몸을 세우려 하심이라 우리가 다 하나님의 아들을 믿는... 일에 하나가 되어”(11-13절). 또 15-16절에서 바울은 사람의 환심을 사려는 우리의 성향을 배제하고, 이 모든 은사는 “온 몸이... 자라고 사랑으로 그 몸을 세우도록” “사랑으로 진리를 말하는” 것으로 표현되어야 한다고 강조하고 있습니다(현대인의 성경).

예수님을 믿는 우리는 사람들을 세우고 하나님의 목적을 이루기 위해 그들을 섬깁니다. 우리가 사람들을 기쁘게 하든 그렇지 않든 상관없이, 하나님의 교회의 연합을 이루기 위해 그분이 우리를 통해 일하실 때 우리는 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 것입니다.

SERVING AT THE PLEASURE

Andrew Card was the Chief of Staff to American president George W. Bush. In an interview regarding his role in the White House he explained, “In each staff member’s office hangs a framed statement of purpose: ‘We serve at the pleasure of the President.’ But that does not mean that we serve to please the President or to win his or her pleasure. Rather, we serve to tell him what he needs to know to do his job.” That job is to govern the United States of America.

In so many of our roles and relationships we slip into peoplepleasing mode rather than building up each other in unity, as the apostle Paul often urged. In Ephesians 4, Paul wrote, “Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith” (VV. 11-13). In verses 15-16, Paul cut through our peoplepleasing tendencies, stressing that these gifts should be expressed by “speaking the truth in love” so that “the whole body . . . grows and builds itself up in love.”

As believers in Jesus, we serve people to build them up and to accomplish God’s purposes. Whether or not we please others, we’ll please God as He works through us to create unity in His church.

네게 무슨 상관이냐

“내 사탕은 딸기 맛인데 쟤는 왜 포도 맛이에요?” 여섯 살 된 조카가 내게 물었습니다. 나는 조카들을 통해 아이들이 자기가 받은 것과 다른 아이들이 받은 것을 곧잘 비교한다는 것을 일찍이 배웠습니다. 이는 곧 조카라면 사족을 못 쓰는 이모로서 판단을 아주 잘해야 한다는 것이지요!

나도 하나님이 내게 주신 것과 다른 사람들에게 주신 것을 비교할 때가 있습니다. “왜 저한테는 이걸 주시고 저 사람은 그걸 주시나요?” 라고 하나님께 질문합니다. 이런 질문은 시몬 베드로가 갈릴리 바닷가에서 예수님께 드렸던 질문을 떠올려 줍니다. 예수님은 전에 그를 부인했던 베드로를 용서하여 회복시키시고 그가 순교자로 죽어 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다(요한복음 21:15-19). 그러나 베드로는 예수님을 따르라는 말씀에 ‘네’ 하지 않고 “주님 [요한은] 어떻게 되겠사옵나이까”(21절)라고 물었습니다.

이에 예수님은 “네게 무슨 상관이냐”고 하시고 “너는 나를 따르라”(22절) 고 하셨습니다. 나는 예수님이 우리에게도 같은 말씀을 하실 것이라 믿습니다. 우리에게 삶의 방향을 이미 알려 주신 예수님은 이제 우리가 신뢰하기를 원하십니다. 우리는 우리가 가는 길을 다른 사람들의 길과 비교하지 말고 단순히 예수님을 따라야 합니다.

그 후 베드로 사도는 30년이 넘도록 초대 교회의 용기 있는 지도자로 하나님을 따랐습니다. 역사 기록에도 그는 악한 네로 황제의 통치 아래 죽음을 두려움 없이 받아들였다고 되어 있습니다. 우리도 하나님의 사랑과 인도하심을 믿으며 한결같이 의심하지 말고 하나님을 따를 수 있기를 바랍니다.

WHAT IS THAT TO YOU?

“Why do I get a strawberry lollipop when she has grape?” my six-year-old niece asked. My nieces and nephew taught me early on that children often compare what they’re given with what others receive. This means that as the doting aunt, I’d better exercise good judgment!

I too sometimes compare the things God gives me with those He’s given others. “Why do I have this, and she has that?” I ask God. My question reminds me of what Simon Peter asked Jesus by the Sea of Galilee. Jesus had just given restoration and forgiveness to Peter for his previous denial of Him and was now telling him that he’d glorify God by dying a martyr’s death (JOHN 21:15-19). Instead of answering yes to Jesus’ invitation to follow Him, however, Peter asked, “Lord, what about [John]?” (V. 21).

Jesus answered, “What is that to you?” and added, “You must follow me” (V. 22). I believe Jesus would say the same to us. When He’s already given us direction in an area in our life, He desires our trust. We’re not to compare our path with that of others, but we’re to simply follow Him.

For more than thirty years, the apostle Peter followed God as a courageous leader of the early church. Historical records also show that he fearlessly embraced death under the evil Emperor Nero. May we too be steadfast and unquestioning in following God, trusting His love and direction.

당신은 사랑받고 있습니다

어린 소녀 앨리는 자기의 슬픔을 표현하기 위해 나무 조각에 글을 써서 공원에 두었습니다. “솔직히 난 슬퍼요. 아무도 나와 놀아주지 않고, 내 말을 들어주던 하나뿐인 친구마저 잃었어요. 난 매일 울어요.”

한 여성이 그 글귀를 보고는 공원에 분필을 가져다 놓으며 사람들에게 앨리를 위해 생각나는 것을 써달라고 했습니다. 그러자 근처에 있는 한 학교의 학생들이 많은 격려의 말을 남겼습니다. “우린 너를 사랑해.” “하나님이 너를 사랑하셔.” “너는 사랑 받고 있어.” 그 학교의 교장선생님은 “이것은 우리가 [앨리에게] 다가가 힘든 마음을 달래 줄 수 있는 한 조그마한 방법에 지나지 않습니다. 누구든 언제나 이런 슬픔과 아픔을 겪거나 앞으로 겪을 것이기에 앨리는 우리 모두를 대표하고 있는 셈이지요.”라고 말했습니다.

“당신은 사랑받고 있습니다”라는 말은 모세가 죽기 직전 이스라엘의 베냐민 지파에게 준 아름다운 축복의 말을 떠올려 줍니다. “여호와의 사랑을 입은 자는 그 곁에 안전히 살리로다”(신명기 33:12). 모세는 적들을 물리치고 십계명을 받고 이스라엘 백성들로 하여금 하나님을 따르게 했던, 하나님께 속한 강력한 지도자였습니다. 그런 모세가 하나님이 이스라엘을 어떻게 보시는지 그들에게 말로 남긴 것입니다. ‘사랑을 입은 자’라는 말은 우리에게도 해당됩니다. 예수님께서 “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 [우리에게] 독생자를 주셨다”(요한복음 3:16)고 말씀하셨기 때문입니다.

하나님의 도우심으로 예수님을 믿는 사람은 누구나 “사랑을 입은 자” 라는 진리 안에서 안전하게 거하게 된 우리는 앨리의 새 친구들처럼 다른 사람들에게 다가가 사랑을 전할 수 있습니다.

YOU ARE BELOVED

To express her sadness, Allie, a young girl, wrote on a piece of wood and set it in a park: “To be honest, I’m sad. Nobody ever wants to hang out with me, and I have lost the only person that listens. I cry every day.”

When someone found that note, she brought sidewalk chalk to the park and asked people to write their thoughts to Allie. Dozens of words of support were left by students from a nearby school: “We love you.” “God loves you.” “You are beloved.” The school principal said, “This is one little way that we can reach out and maybe help fill [her void]. She represents all of us because at some point in time we have all or will all experience sadness and suffering.”

The phrase “You are beloved” reminds me of a beautiful blessing by Moses to the Israelite tribe of Benjamin just before he died: “Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him” (DEUTERONOMY 33:12). Moses had been a strong leader for God, defeating enemy nations, receiving the Ten Commandments, and challenging them to follow God. He left them with God’s view of them. The word beloved can be used of us as well, for Jesus said, “God so loved the world that He gave [us] his one and only Son” (JOHN 3:16).

As God helps us to rest securely in the truth that every believer in Jesus is “beloved,” we can reach out to love others as Allie’s new friends did.

희망의 미래를 바라봄

2005년 허리케인 카트리나로 폐허가 된 뉴올리언스는 서서히 재건되었습니다. 가장 타격이 컸던 지역인 로우어 나인스 워드에서는 카트리나가 지나가고 몇 년 동안 생활필수품마저 구하기가 어려웠습니다. 버넬 코틀론은 이것을 바꾸기 위해 노력하여, 2014년 11 월에 카트리나 이후 그 지역에 첫 식료품 가게를 열었습니다. “내가 건물을 사니까 사람들이 모두 나를 미쳤다고 했어요.”라고 코틀론은 회상했습니다. 그러나 “가게를 찾은 첫 번째 손님이 눈물을 흘렸어요. 그분은 [마을이] 다시 회복되리라고는 생각도 안 해봤거든요.” 그의 어머니도 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 못 본 것을 아들이 보았어요. [아들이]... 나서서 기회를 살린 게 정말 기뻐요.”

하나님은 이사야 선지자에게 재앙 가운데서 생각도 못한 미래의 희망을 보게 하셨습니다. “가련하고 가난한 자가 물을 구하되 물이 없는”(이사야 41:17) 것을 보시고, 하나님은 “광야가 못이 되게 하며 마른 땅이 샘이 되게 하리라”(18절)고 약속하셨습니다. 그의 백성들은 굶주림과 목마름 대신 다시 번영을 경험하게 되면서 그것이 “여호와의 손이 지으신 것”(20절)임을 알게 될 것이었습니다.

하나님은 언제나 회복을 주관하시면서, “피조물도 썩어짐의 종 노릇 한 데서 해방될”(로마서 8:21) 미래를 가져오기 위해 일하고 계십니다. 우리가 하나님의 선하심을 의지할 때 하나님은 희망이 있는 미래를 볼 수 있게 도와주십니다.

SEEING A FUTURE OF HOPE

After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, New Orleans worked to slowly rebuild. One of the most hard-hit areas was the Lower Ninth Ward, where for years after Katrina, residents lacked access to basic resources. Burnell Cotlon worked to change that. In November 2014, he opened the first grocery store in the Lower Ninth Ward after Katrina. “When I bought the building, everybody thought that I was crazy,” Cotlon recalled. But “the very first customer cried cuz she . . . never thought the [neighborhood] was coming back.” His mother said her son “saw something I didn’t see. I’m glad [he] . . . took that chance.”

God enabled the prophet Isaiah to see an unexpected future of hope in the face of devastation. Seeing “the poor and needy search for water, but there is none” (ISAIAH 41:17), God promised to “turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs” (V. 18). When instead of hunger and thirst, His people experienced flourishing once more, they would know “the hand of the Lord has done this” (V. 20).

He’s still the author of restoration, at work bringing about a future when “creation itself will be liberated from its bondage” (ROMANS 8:21). As we trust in His goodness, He helps us see a future where hope is possible.

인생의 순례

매년 2억이 넘는 사람들이 여러 종교적 배경을 가지고 순례 여행을 떠납니다. 오랜 역사를 가진 순례의 목적은 많은 사람의 경우 성지에 가서 일종의 축복을 받는 것이었습니다. 그래서 성전이나 대성당, 사원, 또는 축복을 받을 수 있는 다른 어떤 곳을 찾는 것입니다.

그러나 영국의 켈틱 그리스도인들은 순례를 다르게 보았습니다. 그들은 방향을 정하지 않고 자연 속으로 들어가기도 하고, 배를 타고 나가 어디든지 바다가 데려가는 곳으로 가기도 했습니다. 그들에게 있어 순례는 하나님을 신뢰하며 낯선 곳으로 가는 것이었고, 어떤 축복이든 목적지에 도착해서 받는 것이 아니라 가는 길에 받는 것이라고 생각했습니다.

히브리서 11장은 켈트인들에게 중요한 말씀이었습니다. 그리스도인의 삶이란 세상 방식을 뒤로 하고 나그네처럼 하나님의 도성을 향해 가는 것이기에 (13-16절), 그들의 삶의 여정이 곧 순례와 같았습니다. 순례자들은 아무도 가보지 않은 어려운 길 위에서도 필요를 공급하시는 하나님을 신뢰함으로 구약에 기록된 믿음의 사람들과 같은 믿음을 키워나갔습니다(1-12절).

이것은 실제로 성지순례를 하지 않아도 누구나 배워야 할 교훈입니다. 예수님을 믿는 사람들에게 인생이란 하나님 나라에 이르기까지 어두운 숲과 막다른 길, 시련으로 가득 찬 순례의 길입니다. 우리가 이 여정을 마치기까지, 가는 길에서 공급해 주시는 하나님을 경험하는 복을 누릴 수 있기를 바랍니다.

LIFE’S PILGRIMAGE

More than two hundred million people from a variety of faiths undertake a pilgrimage each year. For many throughout the ages, a pilgrim’s task has been to journey to a sacred place to receive some kind of blessing. It’s been all about reaching the temple, cathedral, shrine, or other destination where a blessing can be received.

Britain’s Celtic Christians, however, saw pilgrimage differently. They set out directionless into the wild or let their boats drift wherever the oceans took them—pilgrimage for them being about trusting God in unfamiliar territory. Any blessing was found not at the destination but along the journey.

Hebrews 11 was an important passage for the Celts. Since the life in Christ is about leaving the world’s ways behind and trekking like foreigners to the city of God (VV. 13-16), a pilgrimage echoed their life’s journey. By trusting God to provide along their difficult, untrodden path, the pilgrim grew the kind of faith lived by the heroes of old (VV. 1-12).

What a lesson to learn, whether we physically trek or not: for those who have trusted Jesus, life is a pilgrimage to God’s heavenly country, full of dark forests, dead ends, and trials. As we journey through, may we not miss the blessing of experiencing God’s provision along the way.
