할머니의 믿음

저녁 식탁에 앉아 있는데 나의 아홉 살짜리 손자가 미소를 지으며 말했습니다. “나는 할머니와 똑같아요. 책 읽는 걸 좋아해요!” 그 말에 나는 기뻤습니다. 한 해 전 손자가 아파서 학교를 쉬었을 때가 생각났습니다. 아이가 긴 낮잠을 자고 나서 우리는 나란히 앉아 책을 읽었습니다. 내가 어머니로부터 물려받은 책 사랑을 유산으로 물려줄 수 있어서 기뻤습니다.

하지만 이것이 손주들에게 물려주고 싶은 가장 중요한 유산은 아닙니다. 부모님으로부터 물려받았고 자녀들에게 물려주고자 했던 믿음의 유산이 또한 손주들 믿음의 여정에 도움이 되기를 기도합니다.

디모데에게는 경건한 어머니와 할머니에 더해 영적인 멘토인 사도 바울의 유산이 있었습니다. 사도 바울은 “이는 네 속에 거짓이 없는 믿음이 있음을 생각함이라 이 믿음은 먼저 네 외조모 로이스와 네 어머니 유니게 속에 있더니 네 속에도 있는 줄을 확신하노라”(디모데후서 1:5)라고 썼습니다.

우리는 자신의 삶이 다른 사람들에게 좋은 본보기가 될 만큼 긍정적이지 못했다고 생각할 수 있습니다. 어쩌면 우리가 물려 받은 유산이 좋은 유산이 아니었을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 우리의 자녀들, 손주들, 또는 다른 아이의 삶에 줄 믿음의 유산을 만들어 나가는 것은 언제나 늦지 않습니다. 하나님의 도움으로 우리는 믿음의 씨앗을 심습니다. 믿음을 자라게 하시는 분은 하나님이십니다(고린도전서 3:6-9).

A GRANDMA’S FAITH

We were seated around the dinner table when my nineyear- old grandson said with a smile, “I’m just like Grandma. I love to read!” His words brought joy to my heart. I thought back to the year before when he’d been sick and stayed home from school. After he took a long nap, we sat together side by side reading. I was happy to be passing along the legacy of loving books that I’d received from my mother.

But that’s not the most important legacy I want to pass on to my grandchildren. I pray the legacy of faith I received from my parents and sought to pass on to my children will also help my grandchildren in their journey toward faith.

Timothy had the legacy of a godly mother and grandmother— and a spiritual mentor, the apostle Paul. The apostle wrote, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also” (2 TIMOTHY 1:5).

We may think our lives haven’t been positive enough to be a good example for others. Maybe the legacy passed down to us wasn’t a good one. But it’s never too late to build a legacy of faith into our children, grandchildren, or any child’s life. Through God’s help, we plant seeds of faith. He’s the one who makes faith grow (1 CORINTHIANS 3:6-9).

죽음 같이 강한 사랑

네덜란드 로어몬트의 개신교 묘지와 가톨릭 묘지 사이의 오래된 벽돌담을 따라 걷다 보면 신기한 광경을 발견할 수 있습니다. 양쪽 벽에 기대어 우뚝 솟은 같은 모양의 비석이 두 개 있는데, 하나는 개신교인 남편의 비석이고 다른 하나는 가톨릭 신자인 아내의 비석입니다. 19세기의 사회 규범을 따라 별도의 묘지에 묻혀야 했던 그들은 이런 운명을 그대로 받아들이지 않았습니다. 그 둘의 특이한 비석들은 담장 위로 높이 솟아 있어 맨 위에는 30- 60 센티미터 정도의 거리만 있습니다. 그리고 두 비석의 꼭대기에는 조각된 팔이 서로를 향해 뻗어 서로의 손을 잡고 있습니다. 이 부부는 죽어서도 헤어지기를 거부했습니다.

아가서는 사랑의 힘을 설명합니다. 솔로몬은 “사랑은 죽음 같이 강하고 질투는 스올 같이 잔인하며”(8:6), 진정한 사랑은 강력하고 맹렬하여 “불길 같이 일어나니”(6절), 항복하지 않고 침묵시킬 수 없고 파괴할 수 없다고 했습니다. 솔로몬은 “많은 물도 이 사랑을 끄지 못하겠고 홍수라도 삼키지 못하나니” (7절)라고 했습니다.

“하나님은 사랑이시라”(요한1서 4:16). 우리의 사랑이 아무리 강해도 그것은 우리를 향한 하나님의 격렬한 사랑의 한 부분을 보여줄 뿐입니다. 모든 진정한 사랑, 모든 강인한 사랑은 다 하나님에게서 나오는 것입니다.

LOVE AS STRONG AS DEATH

If you were to stroll along the old brick wall stretching between the Protestant and Catholic graveyards in Roermond, Netherlands, you’d discover a curious sight. On each side, flush against the wall stands two identical towering headstones: one for a Protestant husband and one for his Catholic wife. Cultural rules during the nineteenth century required they be buried in separate cemeteries. They wouldn’t accept their fate, however. Their unusual headstones are high enough to reach above the fenced obstruction so that at the top there’s only about a foot or two of air separating them. Atop each, a sculptured arm reaches out to the other, each clasping the other’s hand. The couple refused to be separated, even in death.

The Song of Songs explains love’s power. “Love is as strong as death,” Solomon says, “its jealousy unyielding as the grave” (8:6). True love is powerful, ferocious. “It burns like blazing fire” (V. 6). True love never surrenders, won’t be silenced, and can’t be destroyed. “Many waters cannot quench love,” writes Solomon. “Rivers cannot sweep it away” (V. 7).

“God is love” (1 JOHN 4:16). Our strongest love is only a fractured reflection of His ferocious love for us. He’s the ultimate source of any love that’s genuine, any love that holds fast.

하나님의 지키시는 임재

손주들이 내 고등학교 앨범을 보며 사진 속에서 옛날 헤어스타일과 옷차림, “구식” 자동차를 보면서 신기해 했습니다. 하지만 나에게는 다른 것들이 보였습니다. 먼저는 오래 전 친구들, 그 중에 몇몇은 아직도 친한 친구들의 미소였습니다. 그러나 무엇보다도 하나님의 지켜 주시는 능력을 보았습니다. 적응하기 힘들었던 학교에서 하나님은 내 주위에 늘 따뜻하게 함께해 주셨습니다. 하나님을 찾는 모든 이에게 은혜를 베푸시는 그분의 선하심이 나를 지켜 주었던 것입니다.

다니엘은 하나님의 지키시는 임재를 알고 있었습니다. 바벨론에서의 망명 기간 동안 그는 왕의 금령에도 불구하고(다니엘 6:7-9) “자기 집 윗방에 올라가 예루살렘으로 향한 창문을 열고 기도했습니다”(10절). 다니엘은 하나님께서 그의 기도를 듣고 응답하시며 그의 옆에서 그를 지켜주시는 것을 그의 기도하는 전망대에서 기억하곤 했습니다. 하나님은 그렇게 그의 기도를 듣고 응답하고 지켜주셨습니다.

다니엘은 새로운 법령에도 불구하고 자신에게 닥칠 일을 상관 않고 하나님의 임재를 간구했습니다. 그는 전에 늘 하던 대로 기도했습니다(10절). 사자 굴에 있을 때에도 그의 신실하신 하나님이 그를 구하심으로 주의 천사가 다니엘을 지켜주었습니다(22절).

현재의 시련 속에서 과거를 돌아보면 하나님의 신실하심을 떠올릴 수가 있습니다. 다리오 왕마저 하나님에 대해 “그는 구원도 하시며 건져내기도 하시며 하늘에서든지 땅에서든지 이적과 기사를 행하시는 이”(27절)라고 말했습니다. 하나님은 그때도 선하셨고 지금도 선하십니다. 그의 임재가 당신을 지켜줄 것입니다.

GOD’S KEEPING PRESENCE

Looking at my high school yearbook, my grandchildren marveled at outdated hairstyles, clothing, and “old-fashioned” cars in the photos. I saw something different—first the smiles of longtime buddies, some still friends. More than that, however, I saw the keeping power of God. His gentle presence surrounded me in a school where I struggled to fit in. His keeping goodness watched over me—a kindness He grants to all who seek Him.

Daniel knew of God’s keeping presence. In his exile in Babylon, he prayed in “his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem” (DANIEL 6:10) despite the king’s decree not to do so (VV. 7-9). From his prayerful vantage point, Daniel would remember God whose keeping presence sustained him—hearing and answering his prayers. Thus, God would hear, answer, and sustain him again.

Yet, despite the new law, Daniel would still seek God’s presence regardless of what might happen to him. And so he prayed just as he had done so many times before (V. 10). While in the lions’ den, an angel of the Lord kept Daniel safe as his faithful God rescued him (V. 22).

Looking to our past during present trials may help us recall God’s faithfulness. As even King Darius said of God, “He rescues and he saves; he performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth” (V. 27). God was good then, and He’s good now. His presence will keep you.

예수님을 위한 방

뉴올리언스에서의 주말은 환상적이었습니다. 프렌치 쿼터에서 우연히 퍼레이드를 관람하고, 제2차 세계대전 국립박물관을 둘러보고, 굴 구이도 먹었습니다. 하지만 친구의 빈방에서 잠이 들면서 아내와 아이들이 그리워졌습니다. 다른 도시에 와서 설교하는 것도 즐거운 일이지만 집에 있는 것이 제일 좋습니다.

예수님의 생애에서 종종 간과되는 측면 중 하나는 그의 가장 중요한 사건 중 많은 것이 길 위에서 일어났다는 것입니다. 하나님의 아들이 하늘 본향에서는 헤아릴 수 없을 만큼 멀리 떨어진, 그리고 가족들의 고향인 나사렛에서도 멀리 떨어진 베들레헴에서 태어나셨습니다. 베들레헴에는 인구 조사를 위해 돌아온 대가족들로 사람들이 넘쳐났기 때문에 누가는 남는 카탈리마(katalyma), 곧 “손님방”조차 없었다고 말합니다(누가복음 2:7).

예수님의 탄생 때는 없었다가 그의 죽음이 임박해 등장하는 것이 있습니다. 예수님은 제자들을 예루살렘으로 데리고 가실 때 베드로와 요한에게 유월절 식사를 준비하라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그들은 물동이를 메고 가는 남자를 따라 그의 집으로 가서 주인에게 그리스도와 그의 제자들이 최후의 만찬을 먹을 수 있는 손님방인 ‘카탈리마’를 달라고 부탁했습니다(22:10-12). 그 빌린 공간에서 예수님은 지금의 성찬식이라고 불리는 의식을 제정하셨고 이것은 임박한 십자가 처형을 예고하는 것이었습니다(17-20절).

우리는 집을 사랑하지만 예수님의 영과 함께 여행한다면 손님방도 예수님과의 친교의 장소가 될 수 있습니다.

ROOM FOR JESUS

I loved my weekend in New Orleans—happening upon a parade in the French Quarter, visiting the National World War II Museum, and trying grilled oysters. But as I fell asleep in my friend’s spare room, I missed my wife and kids. I enjoy opportunities to preach in other cities, but I most enjoy being home.

One aspect of Jesus’ life that’s sometimes overlooked is how many of His most important events happened on the road. The Son of God entered our world in Bethlehem, an incalculable distance from His heavenly home and far from His family’s hometown of Nazareth. Bethlehem was overflowing with extended family in town for the census, so Luke says there wasn’t even a spare katalyma, or “guest room,” available (LUKE 2:7).

What was missing at Jesus’ birth did show up at His death. As Jesus led His disciples into Jerusalem, He told Peter and John to prepare for their Passover meal. They should follow a pitchercarrying man to his home and ask the owner for the katalyma— the guest room where Christ and His disciples could eat the Last Supper (22:10-12). There, in borrowed space, Jesus instituted what is now called Communion, which foreshadowed His looming crucifixion (VV. 17-20).

We love home, but if we travel with the Spirit of Jesus, even a guest room can be a place of communion with Him.

하나님께서 응답하십니다

티모시 목사님은 여행 중에 성직자 칼라를 입고 다니고, 가끔 모르는 사람이 그를 멈추어 세웁니다. 공항에서 사람들은 그의 단정한 검은 양복 위로 보이는 성직자 밴드를 보고 “저를 위해 기도해 주세요.”라고 합니다. 얼마 전 비행기 안에서는 한 여성이 목사님을 보고 그의 좌석 옆에 무릎을 꿇고 “목사님이시죠? 저를 위해 기도해 주시겠습니까?”라고 부탁했고 티모시 목사님은 기도했습니다.

하나님이 기도를 듣고 응답하신다는 것, 곧 하나님이 우리를 돌보신다는 것을 우리가 어떻게 알 수 있는지 예레미야서의 한 구절이 밝히 보여줍니다. 예레미야는 하나님의 사랑을 받으면서도 죄가 많아 포로 된 백성들에게 이렇게 말하며 안심시켜 줍니다. “여호와의 말씀이니라 너희를 향한 나의 생각을 내가 아나니 평안이요 재앙이 아니니라”(예레미야 29:11). 하나님은 그들이 돌아올 때를 예언하셨습니다. “그러면 너희가 나에게 부르짖어 와서 내게 기도하면 내가 너희를 들을 것이다. 너희가 온 마음으로 나를 구하면 나를 찾을 것이요 나를 만나리라”(12-13절).

선지자는 감옥에 갇혀 있는 동안 이것을, 그리고 기도에 관한 더 많은 것을 배웠습니다. 하나님은 그에게 “너는 내게 부르짖으라 내가 네게 응답하겠고 네가 알지 못하는 크고 은밀한 일을 네게 보이리라”(33:3)고 확실한 말씀을 주셨습니다.

예수님도 우리에게 기도하라고 하십니다. “구하기 전에 너희에게 있어야 할 것을 하나님 너희 아버지께서 아시느니라”(마태복음 6:8). 그러므로 기도할 때 “구하고” “찾고” “두드리라”(7:7) 하셨습니다. 우리는 간구할 때마다 응답하시는 그분께 더 가까이 가게 됩니다. 우리는 기도할 때 하나님을 모르는 사람처럼 대하지 않아도 됩니다. 하나님은 우리를 아시고 우리의 말을 듣고 싶어하십니다. 우리의 염려를 지금 당장 하나님께 가져갈 수 있습니다.

GOD WILL ANSWER

When Pastor Timothy wears his preacher collar while traveling, he often gets stopped by strangers. “Pray for me, please,” people in the airport say when they see the clerical band atop his simple dark suit. On a recent flight, a woman knelt by his seat when she noticed him, pleading: “Are you a pastor? Would you pray for me?” And Pastor Timothy prayed.

A passage in Jeremiah sheds light on why we perceive that God hears and answers prayer: God cares! He assured His beloved but sinful, exiled people, “ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you’ ” (29:11). God anticipated a time when they would return to Him. “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me,” He said, “and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (VV. 12-13).

The prophet learned this and more about prayer while confined to prison. God assured him, “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (33:3).

Jesus also urges us to pray. “Your Father knows what you need before you ask him,” He said (MATTHEW 6:8). So “ask,” “seek,” and “knock” in prayer (7:7). Every petition we make draws us closer to the one who answers. We don’t have to be a stranger to God in prayer. He knows us and wants to hear from us. We can take our concerns to Him right now.

완벽한 선물

페루에 단기 선교 여행을 가서 봉사활동을 하는데 어떤 청년이 나에게 돈을 달라고 했습니다. 우리 팀은 안전을 위해 돈을 주지 말라는 지침을 받았는데 어떻게 하면 이 사람을 도울 수 있을까요? 그때 사도행전 3장에서 한 앉은뱅이에게 사도 베드로와 요한이 보여준 반응이 생각났습니다. 나는 그 청년에게 돈은 줄 수 없지만 하나님의 사랑에 대한 복음은 전할 수 있다고 설명했습니다. 자신은 고아라고 하는 그에게 나는 하나님이 그의 아버지가 되기를 원하신다고 말했습니다. 그러자 그는 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 나는 누군가가 그를 계속 돌볼 수 있도록 현지 교회의 한 성도와 연결시켜 주었습니다.

때로는 우리의 말이 너무나 부족하게 느껴질 때도 있지만 성령님은 우리가 사람들에게 예수님을 전할 때 힘을 주십니다.

베드로와 요한은 성전 뜰에서 그 남자를 만났을 때 그에게 그리스도를 전하는 것이 가장 큰 선물이라는 것을 알았습니다. “베드로가 이르되 은과 금은 내게 없거니와 내게 있는 이것을 네게 주노니 나사렛 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 일어나 걸으라”고(6절) 했습니다. 그 사람은 그 날 구원과 치유를 받았습니다. 하나님은 계속 우리를 사용하셔서 잃어버린 자들을 주님께로 오게 하십니다.

이번 크리스마스에 줄 가장 좋은 선물을 고를 때 진정한 선물은 예수님을 아는 것과 그가 주시는 영원한 구원의 선물임을 잊지 않기를 바랍니다. 그리고 사람들을 구주 예수님께 인도하는 일에 계속 하나님의 쓰임을 받도록 합시다.

THE PERFECT GIFT

While I was on an outreach during a short-term mission trip to Peru, a young man asked me for money. For security reasons, my team had been instructed not to give out money, so how could I help him? Then I recalled the response of the apostles Peter and John to the lame man in Acts 3. I explained to him that I couldn’t give him money, but I could share the good news of God’s love with him. When he said that he was an orphan, I told him that God wants to be his Father. That brought him to tears. I connected him with a member of our host church for follow up.

Sometimes our words can feel so insufficient, but the Holy Spirit can empower us as we share Jesus with others.

When Peter and John came across the man by the temple courts, they knew that sharing Christ was the greatest gift ever. “Then Peter said, ‘Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk’ ” (V. 6). The man received salvation and healing that day. God continues to use us to draw the lost to Him.

As we search for the perfect gifts to give this Christmas, let’s remember that the true gift is knowing Jesus and the gift of eternal salvation He offers. Let’s continue to seek to be used by God to lead people to the Savior.

하나님 언약의 격려

병원에서 힘든 하루를 보냈습니다. 그러나 젊고 똑똑한 열 아홉 살짜리를 괴롭히는 병에 대한 답은 나오지 않아 가족은 낙담했습니다. 그런데 집에 돌아왔을 때 놀랍게도 계단에 잘 포장된 상자 하나가 놓여있었고 그 앞면엔 이사야 43장 2절 말씀이 인쇄되어 있었습니다. 그 안에는 친구들이 직접 쓴 격려의 성경 말씀들이 가득했습니다. 그 이후의 시간은 성경 말씀과 가족 친구들의 사려 깊은 마음의 표시에 격려를 받으며 보냈습니다.

ENCOURAGED BY GOD’S PROMISES

It was a long day at the hospital. Still no answers to the sickness that afflicted a young, bright nineteen-year-old. Arriving home, the family felt discouraged. To their surprise, a nicely decorated box sat on the step with Isaiah 43:2 printed on the front. Inside, were assorted encouraging Bible verses that friends had written out by hand. The next hour was spent being encouraged by Scripture and the thoughtful gesture of the family’s friends.

People going through tough times or family challenges can always use a heartfelt boost. Scripture—either a large portion or just a verse—can encourage you, a friend, or family member. Isaiah 43 is filled with little bits of encouragement—received either individually or as a whole. Consider a few choice thoughts: God has “created you,” “formed you,” “redeemed you,” and called you “by name” (V. 1). God “will be with you” (V. 2), He’s “the Holy One of Israel,” and He’s our “Savior” (V. 3).

As you consider the promises of God, may they encourage you. And as He provides what you need, you can encourage someone else. The verse box didn’t cost a lot, but its impact was priceless. Even after five years, some of those verse cards are still cherished by the family.

예수 안에서 새로운 삶

중앙아시아에서 함께 자란 바히르와 메뎃은 가장 친한 친구 사이였습니다. 그러나 바히르가 예수님을 믿게 되면서 모든 것이 변했습니다. 메뎃이 바히르를 정부에 신고했고 바히르는 극심한 고문을 당했습니다. “네 입으로 다시는 예수의 이름을 말하지 못할 것이다.” 라고 간수가 윽박질렀습니다. 바히르는 심하게 피를 흘리면서도 그들이 그리스도에 대해 말하는 것을 금할 수는 있어도 “내 마음 속에 주님이 하신 일을 결코 바꾸지 못할 것”이라고 말했습니다.

이 말이 메뎃의 마음을 떠나지 않았습니다. 그후 몇 달간 질병과 상실을 겪었던 메뎃은 감옥에서 풀려난 바히르를 찾아갔습니다. 그는 자존심을 버리고 친구에게 그의 예수님을 소개해 달라고 했습니다.

오순절에 베드로 주변에 모여든 사람들이 하나님이 부어주시는 은혜를 목격하고 그리스도에 대한 베드로의 간증을 들었을 때(사도행전 2:37) “마음에 찔림”을 받았던 것과 같이, 메뎃은 성령의 강권하심을 받아들였습니다. 베드로는 사람들에게 회개하고 예수님의 이름으로 세례를 받으라고 외쳤고 약 삼천명이 세례를 받았습니다. 그들이 이전의 삶의 방식을 버린 것처럼 메뎃도 회개하고 주님을 따랐습니다.

예수 안에서 누리는 새로운 삶의 선물은 그를 믿는 모든 자들에게 주어 집니다. 우리가 무슨 죄를 지었든 주님을 믿으면 죄 사함을 누릴 수 있습니다.

NEW LIFE IN JESUS

Growing up together in Central Asia, Baheer and Medet were the best of friends. But when Baheer became a believer in Jesus, everything changed. After Medet reported him to government authorities, Baheer endured excruciating torture. The guard growled, “This mouth will never speak the name of Jesus again.” Though badly bloodied, Baheer managed to say that they might stop him speaking of Christ, but they’d never “change what He has done in my heart.”

Those words remained with Medet. Some months later, having suffered illness and loss, Medet traveled to find Baheer, who had been released from prison. Turning from his pride, he asked his friend to introduce him to his Jesus.

Medet acted on the conviction of the Holy Spirit in the same way that those who gathered around Peter on the feast of Pentecost were “cut to the heart” when they witnessed God’s outpouring of grace and heard Peter’s testimony about Christ (ACTS 2:37). Peter called the people to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus, and some three thousand did. Just as they left their old ways of life behind, so too did Medet repent and follow the Savior.

The gift of new life in Jesus is available to everyone who believes in Him. Whatever we’ve done, we can enjoy the forgiveness of our sins when we trust in Him.

유혹과 시험 당함

스탠리는 개인 운전기사라는 직업이 주는 자유와 융통성을 좋아합니다. 무엇보다 언제든 일을 시작하고 그만 둘 수 있고, 누구에게도 자신의 시간과 동선을 말해줄 필요가 없기 때문입니다. 하지만 역설적으로 그는 그것이 가장 힘든 부분이라고 말합니다.

“이 직업을 가지면 바람을 피우기가 너무 쉽습니다.”라고 그는 솔직하게 인정했습니다. “저는 많은 승객을 태우지만 아내를 포함해 아무도 제가 매일 어디에 있는지 알지 못합니다.” 거부하기 쉽지 않은 유혹이어서 많은 동료 기사들이 이 유혹에 빠졌다고 합니다. “하나님이 어떻게 생각하실지, 아내가 어떻게 느낄지 생각하면 이 유혹을 거부하게 됩니다.”라고 말했습니다.

우리 한사람 한사람을 창조하신 하나님은 우리의 약함과 욕망과 얼마나 쉽게 유혹에 넘어가는지 알고 계십니다. 그러나 고린도전서 10:11-13 말씀처럼 우리는 하나님께 도움을 구할 수 있습니다. “오직 하나님은 미쁘사 너희가 감당하지 못할 시험 당함을 허락하지 아니하셨다”고 바울은 말합니다. “시험 당할 즈음에 또한 피할 길을 내사 너희로 능히 감당하게 하시느니라”(13절). 그 “피할 길”은 결과에 대한 올바른 두려움, 양심의 가책, 성경구절을 기억하는 것, 바로 눈길을 돌리는 것, 혹은 그 밖의 다른 것일 수 있습니다. 우리가 하나님께 힘을 구할 때 성령님께서는 우리를 유혹하는 것에서 눈을 돌려 하나님께서 주신 피할 길을 바라보게 하실 것입니다.

TEMPTED AND TESTED

Stanley loves the freedom and flexibility that his job as a private-hire driver gives him. Among other things, he can start and stop work anytime, and he doesn’t have to account for his time and movements to anyone. Yet, he said, that’s ironically the hardest part.

“In this job, it’s so easy to start an extramarital affair,” he admitted frankly. “I pick up all sorts of passengers, yet no one, including my wife, knows where I am each day.” It’s not an easy temptation to resist, and many of his fellow drivers have given in to it, he explained. “What stops me is considering what God would think, and how my wife would feel,” he said.

Our God, who created each one of us, knows our weaknesses, desires, and how easily we’re tempted. But as 1 Corinthians 10:11- 13 reminds us, we can ask Him for help. “God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear,” Paul says. “When you are tempted, [God] will also provide a way out so that you can endure it” (V. 13). That “way out” could be a healthy fear of the consequences, a guilty conscience, remembering Scripture, a timely distraction, or something else. As we ask God for strength, the Spirit will turn our eyes from what’s tempting us and help us look toward the way out that He’s given us.

크리스마스의 정신

다양한 외국 손님들의 문화를 축하하기 위해서 우리 교회에서 열린 크리스마스 만찬에서 밴드가 중동의 전통적인 캐롤인 “레이랏 알 밀랏”을 연주할 때 나는 다르부카(드럼의 종류)와 우드(기타 같은 악기)소리에 맞춰 즐겁게 박수를 쳤습니다. 밴드 가수는 이 곡 제목의 뜻이 “성탄의 밤”이라고 설명했습니다. 그 가사는 듣는 이에게 목 마른 사람에게 물을 주거나, 애통하는 사람을 위로하는 방식으로 다른 사람을 섬기는 것이 성탄의 정신이라는 것을 상기시켜 줍니다.

이 캐롤은 예수님이 배고플 때 먹을 것을 주고, 목마를 때 마실 것을 주며, 병들고 외로울 때 위로하고 돌보는 등 제자들이 주님께 행한 일들을 칭찬하는 비유에서 유래한 것 같습니다(마태복음 25:34-36). 비유에 나오는 사람들은 예수님의 칭찬을 단순히 받아들이는 대신 자신들이 실제로 그리스도를 위해 이런 일을 한 적이 없었다고 생각하며 의아해했습니다. 예수님은 “너희가 내 형제 중에 지극히 작은 자 하나에게 한 것이 곧 내게 한 것이니라”(40절)고 대답하셨습니다.

연말연시에는 크리스마스의 정신을 잊지 말자는 말이 종종 축제 분위기를 살리자는 뜻으로 다가오기도 합니다. “레이랏 알 밀랏”은 다른 사람들을 돌봄으로써 진정한 크리스마스의 정신을 실천할 수 있음을 깨닫게 합니다. 그리고 놀라운 것은 그렇게 할 때 다른 사람 뿐만 아니라 예수님을 섬기게 된다는 것입니다.

THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS

At a Christmas dinner held at our church to celebrate the cultures of the international guests, I joyfully clapped along to the sound of the darbuka (a type of drum) and the oud (a guitarlike instrument) as a band played the traditional Middle Eastern carol, “Laylat Al-Milad.” The band’s singer explained the title means “Nativity Night.” The lyrics remind hearers that the spirit of Christmas is found in serving others, in ways like offering a thirsty person water or comforting someone weeping.

This carol likely draws from a parable where Jesus commends His followers for deeds they’d done for Him: providing food when He was hungry, drink when He was thirsty, and companionship and care when He was sick and alone (MATTHEW 25:34-36). Instead of simply accepting Jesus’ commendation, the people in the parable are surprised—thinking they hadn’t actually done these things for Christ. He responded, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (V. 40).

During the holiday season, the encouragement to get in the Christmas spirit is often a nudge toward expressing a festive attitude. “Laylat Al-Milad” reminds us that we can put into practice the true Christmas spirit by caring for others. And amazingly, when we do, we not only serve others but Jesus too.
