하나님과 동행

수년 동안, 피트니스 전문가들은 심혈관 건강을 위해 달리기의 중요성을 강조해 왔습니다. 그러나 최근 과학 연구에 따르면 매일 걷는 것도 다양한 건강상의 이점이 있는 것으로 나타났습니다. 미국 국립보건원에 따르면, “하루에 8,000보 이상 걷는 성인은 매일 4,000보만 걷는 사람들에 비해 향후 10년 동안 사망 위험이 감소했습니다.” 걷기는 우리 건강에 좋습니다.

성경 이야기 속에서 걷기는 하나님과의 교제를 상징하는 비유로 사용됩니다. 창세기 3장에는 하나님께서 “날이 서늘할 때에”(8절. 현대인의 성경) 아담과 하와와 함께 동행하며 걸으셨다는 이야기가 나옵니다. 창세기 5장은 “300년 동안 하나님과 함께 신실하게 걸은”(22절) 에녹의 이야기도 들려줍니다. 어느 날 에녹은 창조주와 늘 함께 시간을 보내다가 끌어 올림을 받는 즉시 하나님과 함께 하게 되었습니다(23절). 창세기 17장에서 하나님은 아브람과의 언약을 갱신하시면서 아브람에게 하나님 “앞에서 걷도록” 초대하셨습니다 (1절). 그리고 야곱은 생애 말년에 하나님을 그의 목자로 묘사하고 “신실하게 걸어 온” 그의 조상들에 대해 이야기했습니다(48:15). 또 신약에서 바울은 우리에게 “성령을 따라 행하라”(갈라디아서 5:16)고 가르쳤습니다.

창세기에 나오는 에녹과 족장들처럼 우리도 매일 하나님과 동행하며 걸을 수 있습니다. 우리는 우리의 삶을 예수님께 내어드리고 성령님의 인도를 받음으로써 그렇게 합니다. 그것이 참된 건강의 길입니다. 당신의 걷기는 어떻습니까?

WALKING WITH GOD

For years, fitness experts have stressed the importance of running for cardiovascular health. But recent scientific studies have demonstrated that daily walking also has a range of health benefits. According to the US National Institute of Health, “Adults who took 8,000 or more steps a day had a reduced risk of death over the following decade than those who walked only 4,000 steps a day.” Walking is good for us.

Throughout the story of the Bible, walking is used as a metaphor for communing with God. In Genesis 3, we’re told how God walked with Adam and Eve “in the cool of the day” (V. 8). Genesis 5 shares the story of Enoch, who “walked faithfully with God 300 years” (V. 22). One day Enoch’s regular time spent with his Creator led to him being taken directly to be with God (V. 24). In Genesis 17, God invited Abram to “walk before” Him as He renewed His covenant with him (V. 1). And Jacob, near the end of his life, described God as his shepherd and spoke of his ancestors who had “walked faithfully” (48:15). In the New Testament, Paul instructed us to “walk by the Spirit” (GALATIANS 5:16).

Like Enoch and the patriarchs in Genesis, we can walk with God daily. We do so by surrendering our lives to Jesus and being guided by the Holy Spirit. That’s the path to true health. How’s your walk?

SCOUTING FOR TRUTH

Reflecting on why people tend to be entirely convinced they’re right—even when they’re not—author Julia Galef suggests that it has to do with a “soldier mindset”—where we’re focused on defending what we already believe against what we see as threats.

Galef argues a more helpful mindset is that of a scout—someone focused not primarily on eliminating threats but on seeking the complete truth: comprehending “what’s really there as honestly and accurately as you can, even if it’s not pretty or convenient or pleasant.” People with this outlook have the humility to continually grow in understanding. Galef’s insights bring to mind James’ encouragement that believers adopt a similar mindset—one where they’re “quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” (JAMES 1:19). Instead of being driven by knee-jerk reactions to others, James urges believers in Jesus to remember that human anger doesn’t lead to God’s righteousness (V. 20). Growth in wisdom is only possible through humble submission to His grace (V. 21; SEE TITUS 2:11-14).

When we remember that each moment of our lives is dependent on God’s grace—not on us—we can let go of a need to always be right. And we can rely on His leading for how to live and care well for others (JAMES 1:25-27).

근면한 직원 에린은 항상 업무를 꼼꼼히 처리했습니다. 그러나 부정직한 행위에 대한 혐의를 받고, 조사를 받는 중에 휴직 처분을 받았습니다. 이에 항의하여 사직하려 했지만, 동료들로부터 기다려 보는 것이 낫겠다는 조언을 받았습니다. “떠나는 것은 당신이 유죄라는 것을 의미합니다.” 그래서 에린은 하나님께 정의를 이루어 달라고 기도하며, 직장에 남았습니다. 몇 달 후, 당연히 무죄로 인정받았습니다.

GOD WILL ACT

A hardworking clerk, Erin always did her job well. But after she was accused of dishonesty, Erin was put on leave while being investigated. She felt like quitting in protest but was advised to wait it out. “Leaving suggests you’re guilty,” she was told. So Erin stayed, praying for God to give her justice. Sure enough, months later, she was cleared.

John Mark may have felt the same when Paul dropped him from the mission team. To be sure, the young man had left them earlier (ACTS 15:37-38). But perhaps he’d regretted this and was hoping to be included this time. He must have felt unfairly judged by Paul; only Barnabas believed in him.

Years later, Paul would change his mind. “Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry,” he said (2 TIMOTHY 4:11). John Mark must have been relieved to have his reputation restored.

When we’re unfairly judged, may we remember that Jesus understands how we feel: He Himself was judged a sinner though He wasn’t, and He was treated worse than a common criminal though He was the Son of God. But He continued to do His Father’s will, knowing that He’d be vindicated and shown to be righteous. If you’ve been unfairly judged, don’t give up: God knows and will act in His time.

인간이 아닌 다른 입을 통한 하나님 말씀

만약 개가 무슨 말을 하는지 이해할 수 있다면 어떨까요? 새로운 기술이 “짖음” 인식을 사용하여 개들이 짖을 때의 감정을 판단하는 걸 도와줍니다. 고급 기술을 장착한 목걸이가 수만 개의 짖는 소리를 담은 데이터를 사용하여 개들이 표현하는 감정을 식별합니다. 비록 목걸이가 말로 번역을 해주지는 않지만, 주인과 애완동물이 서로 잘 이해하도록 도와줍니다.

하나님도 발람에게 주의를 주기 위해 동물을 사용하셨습니다. 발람은 “가라... 그리고 내가 네게 이르는 말만 준행하라”(민수기 22:20)는 하나님의 지시에 응하여 모압으로 가기 위해 자기의 나귀에게 안장을 얹었습니다. 그러나 발람에게는 보이지 않았던 여호와의 사자가 “칼을 빼어 손에 들고 길에 선 것”을 나귀가 보고는 걸음을 멈추었습니다(23절). 발람이 계속 앞으로 나아가려고 할 때, 하나님이 나귀에게 인간의 말을 하도록 했습니다. 발람의 눈이 마침내 위험한 상황을 보게 되었을 때, “그가 머리를 숙이고 엎드리고” (31절), 자신의 내면에 하나님의 지시와는 다르게 어떤 보상을 받거나 하나님의 백성을 저주하려는 의도가 있었음을 시인했습니다(37-38절). 그가 말하되 “내가 범죄하였나이다 당신이 나를 막으려고 길에 서신 줄을 내가 알지 못하였나이다”(34절).

우리가 성령의 인도하심을 따라 성경 말씀을 통해, 그리고 다른 이들의 지혜로운 조언을 통해 주시는 하나님의 지시를 겉으로만이 아니라 마음 중심으로 따르기를 원합니다.

OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF . . .

What if you could understand what your dog was saying? New technology uses “bark” recognition to help determine canines’ feelings when they bark. The high-tech collars interpret dogs’ barks using data from more than ten thousand barks to identify the emotion they’re expressing. Though the collars don’t enable a word translation, they do foster a greater understanding between owner and pet.

God used an animal to get Balaam’s attention too. Balaam saddled his donkey to travel to Moab in response to God’s instructions to “go . . . but do only what I tell you” (NUMBERS 22:20). The donkey stopped when it saw God’s angel “standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand,” though Balaam couldn’t see it (V. 23). Balaam continued to try to press forward, so God enabled the donkey to speak in human words. When Balaam’s eyes were finally opened to the danger, “he bowed low and fell facedown” (V. 31), admitting his inward intention to either collect a reward or curse God’s people contrary to God’s instructions (VV. 15-18, 37-38). “I have sinned,” he said. “I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me” (V. 34).

May we heed the instructions God gives us in the pages of the Bible, through the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and in the wise counsel of others—not just outwardly, but inwardly, too.

WHAT SCRIPTURE REVEALS

In April 1817, a disoriented young woman was found wandering around in Gloucestershire, England, wearing exotic clothes and speaking an unknown language. Assuming she was a beggar, authorities placed her in prison. However, she convinced her captors that she was Princess Caraboo from the island of Javasu. For ten weeks, the community treated her as royalty until a boardinghouse keeper revealed that the woman was, in fact, a servant girl named Mary Willcocks.

We may wonder how this young woman deceived an entire community for almost three months. But the book of 2 John warns us that deception is nothing new as it mentions “many deceivers who . . . have gone out into the world” (1:7). These are people who deny that Jesus Christ came “in the flesh” (V. 7), or those who go beyond what Christ taught (V. 9)—proclaiming that the Bible isn’t adequate for us today. Both these types of deceivers can cause us to not “receive [our] full reward” (V. 8 NLT) and can even trick us into helping them in their work (V. 11).

No one likes to be deceived. The people of Gloucestershire didn’t lose much, just some clothing and a few meals. But the Bible says that the consequences of sin and deception continue to threaten us. As we engage with Scripture, God will help us avoid deception as we “walk in obedience to his commands” (V. 6).

생명보다 나은 것

또 한 번의 예기치 않은 건강 문제를 겪은 후, 나는 남편 및 지인들과 함께 산속에서 열린 수양회에 참여했습니다. 언덕 위의 작은 교회로 향하는 나무 계단을 터벅터벅 올라갔습니다. 어둠 가운데 홀로 부서진 계단 자락에 앉아 쉬면서 “주님, 도와주세요.”라고 속삭이는데, 어디선가 음악 소리가 흘러나왔습니다. 나는 천천히 걸어서 그 작은 방으로 들어갔습니다. 좀처럼 사라지지 않는 통증을 참으며, 광야 가운데에서도 우리의 기도를 들으시는 하나님께 감사를 드렸습니다!

성경에서 하나님을 가장 친밀하게 예배했던 순간들 중 일부는 광야에서 일어났습니다. 다윗 왕은 유다 광야에서 자신의 아들 압살롬을 피해 숨어 있을 때 이렇게 노래했습니다. “하나님이여 주는 나의 하나님이시라 내가 간절히 주를 찾되 물이 없어 마르고...내 영혼이 주를 갈망하며”(시편 63:1). 하나님의 능력과 영광을 경험한 다윗은 하나님의 사랑이 “생명보다 낫다고” (3절) 여겼고, 광야에 있을지라도 평생을 예배하기로 작정했습니다(2-6절). 그는 이렇게 말했습니다. “주는 나의 도움이 되셨음이라 내가 주의 날개 그늘에서 즐겁게 부르리이다 내 영혼이 주를 가까이 따르니 주의 오른손이 나를 붙드시거니와”(7-8절).

BETTER THAN LIFE

After another unexpected health setback, I joined my husband and others during a retreat in the mountains. I trudged up the wooden staircase that led to the tiny church on the top of a hill. Alone in the dark, I stopped to rest on a splintered step. “Help me, Lord,” I whispered as the music began. I walked slowly until I stepped into the small room. I breathed through the lingering pain, grateful that God hears us in the wilderness!

Some of the most intimate moments of worshiping God recorded in Scripture took place in the wilderness. While hiding in the Desert of Judah and most likely on the run from his son Absalom, King David sang: “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you” (PSALM 63:1). Having experienced God’s power and glory, David deemed God’s love as “better than life” (V. 3), and it was the reason he committed to a lifetime of worship—even while in the wilderness (VV. 2-6). He said, “Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your right hand upholds me” (VV. 7-8).

Like David, regardless of our circumstances or the fierceness of those standing against us, we can demonstrate confidence in God by praising Him (V. 11). Though we’ll suffer, sometimes by no fault of our own, we can trust that God’s love is always better than life.

청각장애인의 마음

레이사는 수어 실력을 키우기 위해 청각 장애인의 세계에 몰입했습니다. 얼마 지나지 않아 그들이 겪는 문제들을 알게 되었습니다. 청각 장애인은 청각을 가진 사람들에게 무시당하고, 상대의 입술을 잘 읽어야 한다는 오해를 받으며, 직장에서는 종종 승진에서 제외되기도 합니다. 대부분의 공공 행사에서 수어 통역이 제공되지 않습니다.

레이사는 수어 실력이 점점 늘어나면서 청각 장애인과 편하게 어울리게 되었습니다. 한 파티에서 어떤 청각 장애인이 레이사가 들을 수 있다는 사실을 알고 놀랐습니다. 레이사가 답변을 하려는 순간 다른 친구가 “쟤는 청각 장애인의 마음을 가졌어.”라고 수어로 말했습니다. 그 비결은 레이사가 그들의 세계에 함께 하고자 했던 의지였습니다.

레이사는 “자신을 낮추어” 청각 장애인들과 함께 했던 것이 아니었습니다. 자신이 들을 수 있다는 것만 빼고는 레이사와 그들은 같았기 때문입니다. 그러나 예수님은 이 세상에 오셔서 우리 모두와 함께 하시려고 몸소 낮아지셨습니다. 그분은 “천사들보다 잠시 동안 못하게 하심을 입은 자”(히브리서 2:9)였습니다. 그리스도께서 “우리와 같은 모양으로 혈과 육을 함께 지니심은 죽음을 통하여 죽음의 세력을 잡은 자 곧 마귀를 멸하기 위함”(14절) 이었습니다. 그로 인해 주님은 “죽기를 무서워하므로 한평생 매여 종 노릇하는 모든 자들을 놓아 주려”(15절) 하셨습니다. 또한 주님은 “하나님의 일에 자비하고 신실한 대제사장이 되어 백성의 죄를 속량하시기 위해 범사에 우리와 같이 되셨습니다”(17절).

우리가 어떤 상황에 있더라도 예수님은 그것을 알고 이해하십니다. 그분은 우리의 마음을 들으시고 언제나 우리와 함께 계십니다.

A DEAF HEART

To improve her sign language skills, Leisa immersed herself in the world of the Deaf. Soon she learned the problems they face. The Deaf are awkwardly ignored by hearing people, expected to lip-read flawlessly, and routinely get passed over for promotions at work. Most public events go uninterpreted.

Leisa’s signing steadily improved to the point where she felt at home with the Deaf. At a party, a Deaf person was surprised to learn Leisa could hear. Before Leisa could respond, another friend signed, “She has a Deaf heart.” The key had been Leisa’s willingness to live in their world.

Leisa didn’t “condescend” to be with the Deaf. Except for her hearing, she was like them. But Jesus did stoop to reach all of us—to live in our world. He “was made lower than the angels for a little while” (HEBREWS 2:9). Christ “shared in [our] humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil” (V. 14). In doing so, He freed “those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death” (V. 15). More than that, He was “fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God” (V. 17).

Whatever we face, Jesus knows and understands. He hears our heart. He’s with us in every way. TIM GUSTAFSON

창조 속에서 만난 하나님

케니는 믿음을 잃은 후 교회를 떠났었지만, 몇 년이 지난 후 회중 앞에 서게 되었습니다. 그는 자신의 믿음이 회복되었다고 간증했습니다. 어떻게 회복되었을까요? 하나님께서 창조 속에서의 아름다움과 질서를 통해 그의 마음을 감동시키셨던 것입니다. 케니는 자연에서 드러난 하나님의 일반 계시를 통해 다시 하나님을 경외하게 되었고, 이제는 성경 말씀에 담긴 특별 계시의 지혜를 받아들입니다. 간증 후 케니는 성전 앞에 있는 침례 수조 안으로 들어갔습니다. 그의 아버지는 기쁨의 눈물을 흘리며 예수님에 대한 믿음을 회복한 그에게 세례를 베풀어 주었습니다.

그리스도에 대한 믿음이 의심될 때 하나님의 창조의 경이로움을 떠올려 보십시오. 우리가 보는 눈을 갖기만 한다면, 하나님은 창조 세계 가운데 자신을 드러내십니다.

SEEING GOD IN CREATION

Kenny stood before the congregation he’d left years before after he’d lost faith in God. He shared that his belief had been restored. How? God had touched his heart through the beauty and design he saw in creation. Kenny was in awe of Him once more through the witness of God’s general revelation seen in the natural world, and he now embraced the wisdom found in the special revelation of Scripture. After sharing his story, Kenny stepped into the tank of water at the front of the sanctuary. His father, tears of joy in his eyes, baptized him based on his faith in Jesus.

After he’d lost much in life, Job’s faith had also been shaken. He said, “I cry to you, O God, but you don’t answer. I stand before you, but you don’t even look” (JOB 30:20 NLT). God “spoke to Job out of the storm” (38:1), declaring that it wasn’t about Him not seeing Job but that Job’s vision needed to be expanded as he considered God’s amazing, intricate creation. The “earth’s foundation” and the “morning stars” (VV. 4, 7) and all the creatures, plants, and waters found between (VV. 8-41), pointed to the one whom Job could trust—the God of amazing love and power. Job responded by saying, “My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you” (42:5).

When doubts threaten your faith in Christ, consider the magnificence of God’s creation. He reveals Himself in it if we only have eyes to see. TOM FELTEN

오 베들레헴 작은 골

필립 브룩스는 베들레헴을 방문한 후 많은 이들에게 사랑받는 “오 베들레헴 작은 골”이라는 찬송가의 가사를 썼습니다. 미국의 한 교회 목사였던 그는 베들레헴에 가서 보고 받은 감동을 주일학교 학생들에게 이렇게 전했습니다. “크리스마스 이브에, 나는 예수님이 태어나신 곳 근처에 있는 베들레헴의 오래된 교회 안에 서 있었는데, 한참 동안 하나님을 찬양하는 멋진 찬송가가 온 교회에 울려 퍼졌어요. 그때 구세주 탄생의 ‘놀라운 밤’을 함께 노래하는 익숙한 목소리가 반복해서 들리는 듯 했답니다.”

1868년에 브룩스는 이 내용을 시로 정리했고, 교회의 오르간 연주자가 곡을 붙였습니다. 이 노래는 미국 남북전쟁 직후의 혼란스러운 시기에 고요함과 평안의 메시지가 되었습니다. “오 베들레헴의 작은 골 / 너 잠들었느냐 / ... 온 하늘 두루 비춘 줄 / 너 어찌 모르나.”

LITTLE TOWN OF BETHLEHEM

Phillips Brooks wrote the lyrics to the beloved carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem” after visiting Bethlehem. Brooks, pastor of a church in the United States, was so moved by his experience that he wrote this to his Sunday school students: “I remember . . . on Christmas Eve, when I was standing in the old church at Bethlehem, close to the spot where Jesus was born, when the whole church was ringing hour after hour with the splendid hymns of praise to God, how again and again it seemed as if I could hear voices that I knew well, telling each other of the ‘Wonderful Night’ of the Savior’s birth.”

In 1868, Brooks put his thoughts into a poem, and his church organist set it to music. The song spoke stillness and peace into the unsettling aftermath of the American Civil War: “O little town of Bethlehem / How still we see thee lie! / . . . The hopes and fears of all the years / Are met in thee tonight.”

Matthew wrote of our Savior’s birth in Bethlehem in Matthew 2. When the “Magi from the east” (V. 1) followed the star to Bethlehem (SEE MICAH 5:2), “they were overjoyed” to find Jesus (MATTHEW 2:10).

Today, as we celebrate Epiphany, we too need the glorious news of our Savior’s birth. As the hymn reminds us, He came to “cast out our sin and enter in” and “be born in us.” In Him, we find peace.

하나님은 진정 모든 것을 다 알고 계십니다. 그런데 ‘월스트리트 저널’에 의하면 미국 국가안보국 또한 휴대폰 데이터를 통해 우리에 대한 많은 정보를 수집한다고 합니다. 휴대폰을 가진 모든 사람은 “메타데이터” 를 생성하는데, 이로 인해 “디지털 흔적”을 남기게 됩니다. 개개의 데이터는 대수롭지 않게 보일 수 있지만, 이것들을 모아서 분석하면 “현존하는 가장 강력한 분석 자료”가 되는 것입니다. 메타데이터를 추적하면 조사관은 언제든지 우리의 과거와 현재 위치를 정확히 짚을 수 있습니다.

GOD KNOWS EVERYTHING

God truly knows all. But according to an article in The Wall Street Journal, the National Security Agency knows a great deal about us as well through our smartphone data trails. Everyone who owns a cell phone creates “metadata” that leaves a “digital trail.” While each individual crumb of data might seem insignificant, when it’s combined and analyzed, it provides “one of the most powerful investigative tools ever devised.” By tracing our metadata, investigators can pinpoint where we’ve been or where we are at any given moment.

Far more superior than the NSA’s digital trail analysis, David said God knows where we are in relation to Him. In Psalm 139, he addresses a prayer to God, the one who alone can search and examine what’s going on inside of us (V. 1). The psalmist wrote, “Search me, God, and know my heart” (V. 23). He knows everything about us (VV. 2-6), is present everywhere (VV. 7-12), and “created [our] inmost being” (VV. 13-16). His thoughts are higher than our human understanding (VV. 17-18), and He’s even with us as we face our enemies (VV. 19-22).

Because God is all-knowing, ever-present, and all-powerful, He knows exactly where we’ve been, what we’ve been doing, and what we’re made of. But He’s also a loving Father who will help us walk in His ways. Let’s follow Him down the trail of life today.
