두려움에서 기쁨으로

많은 역사가들은 인류 최초로 라디오 방송으로 음악과 음성을 들은 사람들은 1906년 크리스마스 이브에 대서양에 있던 미 해군과 다른 선박들의 무선 통신사들이었다고 합니다. 그들은 평소 듣던 단순한 신호음과 전신 부호 대신 레지널드 페센든이 바이올린으로 연주하는 크리스마스 캐롤 “오 거룩한 밤 (O, Holy Night)”을 들었습니다. 페센든은 방송을 마치며 천사들의 찬양에 맞추어 이렇게 외쳤습니다. “지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광이요!”(누가복음 2:14). 이 라디오 방송을 들은 사람들은 예수님의 탄생을 기리는 감동의 음악과 목소리에 깜짝 놀랐을 것입니다.

예수님의 탄생 소식을 듣고 놀란 최초의 사람들은 평소와 다름없이 밤에 양을 지키던 목자들이었습니다. 갑자기 한 천사가 하나님의 영광으로 빛을 발하며 나타나 목자들을 놀라게 했습니다. 천사는 그들에게 두려워하지 말라고 하며 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식을 너희에게 전하노라 오늘 다윗의 동네에 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨으니 곧 그리스도 주시니라”(10-11절). 양 떼를 놔두고 천사의 말을 확인하러 나선 목자들은 천사가 전한대로 구유에 누인 아기를 발견했습니다(16, 20절).

목자들은 이 좋은 소식을 큰 기쁨으로 받아들였습니다. 우리도 경이로운 예수님의 탄생과 그의 삶을 기뻐하며 널리 전하도록 합시다.

FROM FRIGHT TO DELIGHT

Many historians believe the first-ever radio broadcast of music and speech was heard by radio operators on US Navy and other ships in the Atlantic on Christmas Eve, 1906. Instead of the usual beeps and pulses to transmit codes, they listened to Reginald Fessenden play a violin solo of the Christmas carol “O, Holy Night.” Fessenden closed his broadcast by echoing the angels’ praise: “Glory to God in the highest heaven!” (LUKE 2:14). The listeners must have been startled by the evocative music and statement of praise over the birth of Jesus.

The first people surprised by Jesus’ birth were the shepherds who’d been keeping to their usual business of watching their sheep at night. Then an angel appeared, shining with the glory of God and giving the shepherds a fright. The angel urged them not to be afraid and declared: “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (VV. 10-11). The shepherds left their sheep to investigate the angel’s words and found the baby lying in a manger, just as they had been told (vv. 16, 20).

The shepherds accepted this good news of great joy. May we too rejoice and share the wonders of Jesus’ birth and life.

차별 금지

1872년, 율리시스 S. 그랜트 대통령이 워싱턴 DC에서 마차를 함부로 몰다가 경찰에게 적발되었습니다. 한 보도에 의하면 흑인 경찰관 윌리엄 웨스트가 그랜트 대통령에게 다음과 같이 경고를 주었다고 합니다. “대통령님, 마차를 너무 빨리 몰면 길을 건너는 보행자의 생명이 위험 합니다.” 그랜트 대통령은 사과했지만 다음 날 밤 다시 마차를 빨리 몰았습니다. 웨스트 경찰관은 이번에도 그의 마차를 멈춰 세웠습니다. “대통령님, 각하는 국가의 지도자이시고 저는 일개 경찰관인데, 매우 유감이지만 제게 맡겨진 임무는 임무입니다.” 웨스트는 대통령을 체포했습니다.

나는 자신의 임무를 다한 이 용감한 경찰관이 대단하다고 생각합니다. 그랜트 대통령도 그를 높이 평가하며 그의 자리를 지킬 수 있게 배려했습니다. 하나님도 기뻐하셨을 것입니다. 하나님은 차별이라는 불의를 싫어하시기 때문 입니다. “영광의 주 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도에 대한 믿음을 너희가 가졌으니 사람을 차별하여 대하지 말라”(야고보서 2:1)고 하나님이 말씀하십니다. 부자와 권력자에게는 특별한 호의를 베풀고 가난한 자들에게는 그저 남은 것만 주는 것도 이러한 차별에 해당합니다(2-4절). 반대로 우리는 이웃을 우리 자신과 같이 사랑해야 합니다(8절). 만일 우리가 사람을 차별하여 부유한 이웃을 그렇지 않은 이웃보다 우대한다면, “죄를 짓는 것이니, 죄인으로 정죄”될 것입니다 (9절).

하나님은 우리를 차별하지 않으셨습니다. 우리가 아무것도 드릴 것이 없을 때에도, “세상에서 소망이 없고 하나님도 없는”(에베소서 2:12) 때에도 하나님은 우리를 사랑하셨습니다. 하나님의 도우심으로 우리도 모든 사람을 동등하게 사랑할 수 있습니다.

NO FAVORITISM

In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant was stopped for recklessly driving his carriage through Washington DC. One published account says that the officer, an African American named William West, warned Grant, “Your fast driving, sir . . . is endangering the lives of the people who have to cross the street.” Grant apologized, but the next night he was racing carriages again. West stopped Grant’s horses. “I am very sorry, Mr. President, to have to do it, for you are the chief of the nation and I am nothing but a policeman, but duty is duty.” West arrested the president.

I admire this brave man for doing his duty. So did Grant. He praised West and made sure he kept his job. God also was pleased, for He hates the injustice of favoritism. He says, “Believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism” (JAMES 2:1). That includes not giving special favors to the rich and powerful, leaving only leftovers for the poor (VV. 2-4). Instead, we’re called to love our neighbor as ourselves (V. 8). If we play favorites, serving our platinum club neighbors rather than the less privileged, we “sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers” (V. 9).

God didn’t play favorites with us. He loved us when we had nothing to offer, when we were “without hope and without God in the world” (EPHESIANS 2:12). With His help, we can love all people equally.

주님의 사람들을 보내 주소서

내 친구 마리짜는 혼자 여러 도시를 다녀야 하는 일을 하게 되면서 종종 외로움을 느꼈습니다. 그러던 어느 날 함께 저녁을 먹던 중 그녀가 상체를 나에게 기울이며 말했습니다. “젠, 나는 하나님께 주님의 사람들을 보내 달라고 기도했어.” 그리고 얼마 지나지 않아 하나님께서 예수님을 믿는 사람들을 계속 만나게 해주셨다고 말했습니다. 어떤 날은 하루에 세 명을 만난 적도 있다고 했습니다!

우리가 예수님을 믿는 사람들을 만나면 영적으로 통하는 것을 경험합니다. 말로 설명하기 힘들지만 이것은 마치 우리 안에서 불꽃이 일어나는 것과도 같습니다. 우리는 예수 그리스도에 대한 성경의 가르침을 믿고, 예수님을 통해 하나님과 연결될 수 있다는 사실을 믿는 가장 중요한 공통점을 가지고 있습니다(로마서 10:9).

무엇보다도 성령님께서 모든 믿는 사람들 안에 거하시며 우리를 강하게 하나로 엮어 주십니다. 성경은 이것을 사람의 몸의 각 지체들이 서로 연결되어 있는 것에 비유합니다. 고린도전서 12장 13절은 “우리가 유대인이나 헬라인이나 종이나 자유인이나 다 한 성령으로 세례를 받아 한 몸이 되었다.”고 말합니다.

하나님은 우리 삶 가운데 하나님을 사랑하는 사람들을 통해 역사하십니다. 그들은 가까이 또는 멀리 있는 사람들일 수 있고, 처음 만나거나 오래 알고 지낸 사람들일 수 있습니다. 우리는 가장 외로운 시간에 하나님의 사람들을 보내 달라고 간구할 수 있고, 동시에 우리 자신도 다른 이들에게 힘이 되는 도구로 사용해달라고 기도할 수 있습니다.

SEND ME YOUR PEOPLE

When my friend Maritza took a job that required traveling to many different cities by herself, she often felt lonely. But over dinner one night, she leaned in and told me, “Jen, I prayed and asked God to send me His people.” She went on to say it wasn’t long before she’d begun to meet other believers in Jesus on a regular basis. Once, she met three in one day!

When we encounter others who have faith in Jesus, we share a spiritual connection. In a hard-to-explain way, this lights a spark within us. We have the most important thing in common because we believe what the Bible says about Christ and how it’s possible to have a relationship with God through Him (ROMANS 10:9).

Most importantly, the Spirit of God lives in each believer, knitting us together so powerfully that the Bible compares us to the interconnected parts of the human body. First Corinthians 12:13 says, “We were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body”— the body of Christ.

God often works in our lives through others who love Him, whether they’re near or far, known or new acquaintances. In our loneliest times, we can ask Him to send His people—even as we offer ourselves to be used by Him to encourage others.

우리는 에콰도르 선교 여행 중 여러 집을 방문하다 양파를 수확하는 남자를 보고 기도하는 마음으로 다가갔습니다. 나는 서툰 스페인어로 친구들과 함께 잠시 성경에 대해 이야기하고 싶다고 말했습니다. 그는 일손을 멈추고 우리가 전하는 간증에 귀를 기울였습니다. 이어서 같이 갔던 한 사람이 영어로 성경말씀을 소리 내어 읽기 시작했습니다. 그 남자가 우리가 건넨 스페인어 성경을 함께 읽던 그 순간은 안데스 산맥의 한 곳에서 복음이 선포되는 참으로 거룩한 시간이었지요! 우리는 그와, 그리고 멀리서 일하던 그의 가족과 이야기를 나누고, 함께 기도한 후 다음 집을 향해 발길을 옮겼습니다.

우리가 산기슭을 따라 걸으며 성경을 읽어주고 사람들에게 그리스도를 전하는 동안, 나는 예수님이 이 땅에 사시는 동안 제자들과 함께 이스라엘의 언덕과 골짜기를 걸으며 복음을 전하시던 모습을 떠올렸습니다.

이사야 52장 7절은 이렇게 말합니다. “좋은 소식을 전하며 평화를 공포하며 복된 좋은 소식을 가져오며 구원을 공포하며 시온을 향하여 이르기를 네 하나님이 통치하신다 하는 자의 산을 넘는 발이 어찌 그리 아름다운가.” 이 말씀은 이스라엘 백성이 오랜 포로 생활에서 벗어나 고향으로 돌아오는 때를 예언한 것입니다. 그러나 이 말씀은 오늘날 우리가 예수 그리스도의 복음을 전할 때에도 여전히 적용됩니다.

우리의 선교지는 멋진 안데스 산맥 같은 곳이 아닐지라도, 하나님께서 우리를 어디에 두시든지, 성령님께서는 우리가 만나는 사람들에게 구원의 소식을 전할 수 있도록 우리를 도우십니다.

BRINGING GOOD NEWS

The man was harvesting onions when we prayerfully approached him during the home visits we were conducting on our mission trip in Ecuador. In broken Spanish, I told him my friends and I would like to briefly speak to him about the Bible. He paused to listen as we shared our testimonies with him. Then one of my teammates started reading Scripture aloud in English. What a sacred moment it was for all to hear the good news read on the side of the Andes mountains as the man read along in Spanish with the booklet we had given him! We talked with him and his family who’d been working off in the distance, prayed for them, and continued to the next house.

As we walked along the mountainside reading Scripture and talking to people about Christ, I thought of Jesus and His disciples walking along the hills and valleys of Israel during His earthly ministry.

Isaiah 52:7 says, “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation.” The prophet was referring to the time when God’s people would return to their homeland after years in exile, but it still applies to us today whenever we share the good news of Jesus with others.

Our opportunities may not be in the spectacular Andes, but wherever God has placed us, the Holy Spirit can help us share the message of salvation with those He puts in our path.

외로움 가운데 함께 하심

헨리 데이비드 소로우는 도시를 많은 사람이 “함께 외로워하는 곳”이라고 표현했습니다. 그 말이 맞는 것 같습니다. 나의 젊은 시절, “Mr. Lonely” (미스터 론리), “Only the Lonely”(온리 더 론리), “Eleanor Rigby” (엘리노 릭비) 같은 노래들은 격리와 외로움을 담고 있었습니다. 얼마 전에는 팬데믹으로 몇 해 동안 전세계가 역사 이래 가장 큰 격리를 경험했습니다. 그리고 소셜 미디어는 사람들과의 관계가 없는 연결을 제공해줌으로써 그 외로움을 더 심화시킬 수 있습니다. 어쩌면 외로움이 새로운 팬데믹일지도 모릅니다.

마태는 예수님의 탄생 이야기를 전하면서(1:18-25) “이 모든 일이 된 것은 주께서 선지자로 하신 말씀을 이루려 하심이니 보라 처녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳을 것이요 그의 이름은 임마누엘이라 하리라 하셨으니 이를 번역한즉 하나님이 우리와 함께 계시다 함이라”(22-23절)고 말했습니다. 이 말을 깊이 생각해 보십시오. 하나님이 우리와 함께 계십니다!

예수님을 믿는 우리는 결코 혼자가 아닙니다. 우리는 장소와 시대를 초월하여 그리스도의 한 가족으로 다시 태어난 사람들입니다. 바울 사도는 “이제 여러분은 외인도 아니요 나그네도 아니요 오직 성도들과 동일한 시민이요 하나님의 권속이라”(에베소서 2:19)고 말했습니다. 우리는 언제나 우리와 함께 계시는 하나님의 사랑을 받고 있습니다. 하나님은 “내가 결코 너희를 떠나지 않으며 결코 너희를 버리지 아니하리라”(히브리서 13:5)고 말씀하셨습니다.

WITH US IN OUR LONELINESS

Henry David Thoreau described a city as a place where many people are “lonesome together.” Those words have the ring of truth. In my youth, songs like “Mr. Lonely,” “Only the Lonely,” and “Eleanor Rigby” focused on isolation and loneliness. In recent years, the pandemic was one of the most isolating seasons the world has known. And social media can feed that loneliness, giving us connection without relationship. Perhaps loneliness is the new pandemic.

As Matthew shared the story of the birth of Jesus (1:18-25), he told us, “All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet [Isaiah]: ‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’) ” (VV. 22-23). Ponder that for a moment. God with us!

As believers in Jesus, we’re never alone. We’ve been born again into the family of Christ, a family that spans the globe and the ages. The apostle Paul said, “You are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household” (EPHESIANS 2:19). We’re loved by the ever-present God, who said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (HEBREWS 13:5).

Whatever you’re facing today, your heavenly Father is present with you. Allow Him to help you as you step into life’s uncertainties and challenges. He’s with you.

하나님 안에서 쉼

이웃에 사는 샘이 어느 날 밤, 차 없이 집에 돌아왔습니다. 그는 아내에게 “누가 훔쳐갔어.”라고 하고는 “좀 자야겠네. 내일 해결해야지.”라고 말했습니다. 그의 아내는 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 남편이 어떻게 그렇게 태연할 수 있는지 이해하지 못하는 아내에게 샘은 이렇게 말했습니다 “그럼 어떡해? 법석 떤다고 될 일이 아니잖아.”

늘 합리적 생각을 하는 그 이웃은 걱정을 해도 소용 없다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 나중에 경찰이 그 차를 찾아줄 것이라 했던 그의 믿음대로 일은 그렇게 해결됐습니다.

베드로 사도도 감옥에 갇히고 나서 그렇게 느끼지 않았을까요(사도행전 12:4)? 보통 때에 다소 충동적인 성격의 그는 처형을 당할 처지에서도 태연히 “두 군인 사이에서 자고” 있었습니다(6절). 천사가 “베드로의 옆구리를” 쳐서 깨워야 했다는 구절은(7절) 그가 완전히 차분하고 평안했음을 말해줍니다. 자기 생명이 하나님 손에 있다는 것을 알기 때문이었을까요? 9절과 11절에서 그는 구출이 되든 안되든 상관하지 않았다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 아마도 베드로는 예수님께서 자기에게 주신 구원과 영광의 확신(마태복음 19:28)뿐 아니라, 예수님이 “나를 따르라” 하신 부르심(요한복음 21:22)을 기억하며 자기에게 일어날 일들에 대해 걱정하지 않았던 것 같습니다.

오늘 우리도 어떤 일을 만나도 하나님께서 그의 강한 손으로 이 세상과 천국에서 우리의 미래를 주관하신다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다. 그런 믿음이면 우리도 쉽게 편한 잠을 잘 수 있을 것입니다.

RESTING IN GOD

My neighbor Sam returned home one night without his car. “It was stolen,” he told his wife, then added, “I’m going to sleep. I’ll sort it out tomorrow.” His wife was flabbergasted. She couldn’t understand how Sam could be so calm, but he explained: “What else can I do? Panicking won’t make any difference.”

My ever-sensible neighbor could see there was no point worrying. He trusted that the authorities would be able to find his missing car later—which they did.

Did the apostle Peter feel likewise after being thrown into prison (ACTS 12:4)? He was likely to face execution, yet the usually impulsive disciple “was sleeping between two soldiers” (V. 6). The angel had to “[strike] Peter on the side” to wake him up (V. 7)—suggesting that he was completely calm and at peace. Was it because he knew his life was in God’s hands? Verses 9 and 11 suggest that it wouldn’t have mattered whether he was rescued or not; perhaps he recalled the assurance of salvation and glory that Jesus had given him (MATTHEW 19:28), as well as Christ’s call to simply “follow me” and not worry about what would happen to him (JOHN 21:22).

No matter what we’re facing today, we can trust that God holds our future—both on earth and in heaven—in His mighty hands. Perhaps then we can sleep in peace more easily.

하나님께서 주신 재능

작곡의 거장 루드비히 반 베토벤은 역사상 가장 위대한 음악가의 하나로 손꼽힙니다. 그가 1827년에 세상을 떠나고 거의 200년이 지난 지금도 그의 작품은 여전히 가장 많이 연주되는 곡들 중 하나입니다. 그러나 베토벤의 DNA를 연구한 바에 의하면 우리가 흔히 생각하는 것과는 달리 그의 재능 가운데 어떤 것은 타고난 것이 아닐 수도 있음을 보여줍니다. 리듬 감각

우리는 살면서 하나님의 성막을 만드는 일과 같은 중요한 과제에 참여할 일이 아마도 없을 것입니다. 우리의 능력이 역사에 기록될 일도 거의 없을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 그분이 우리에게 주신 기술과 소질과 경험들을 이 세상에 사용하기를 원하십니다. 하나님의 권능으로, 그리고 그분의 영광을 위해 하나님을 충실히 섬길 수 있기를 소망합니다.

GIFTED BY GOD

Virtuoso composer Ludwig van Beethoven is one of the most celebrated musicians in history. Nearly two centuries after his death in 1827, his compositions are still among the most performed pieces. A study of Beethoven’s DNA, however, indicates he may not have been born with some of his abilities—as we might assume. When his genes were compared to those of 14,500 other people who’d shown an ability to keep rhythm (merely one aspect of musical talent), Beethoven ranked surprisingly low.

Beethoven also had ample opportunity and exposure to music (which developed the aptitude he did have). Yet neither talent nor opportunity fully account for God’s role in endowing us with the abilities we have. Our Creator equipped two men, Bezalel and Oholiab, with specific skills to be used in building the tabernacle. God filled Bezalel “with knowledge and with all kinds of skills—to make artistic designs” and appointed Oholiab “to help him” (EXODUS 31:3-6). God gave “ability to all the skilled workers to make everything [He] commanded” (V. 6).

Few of us will work on projects as significant as God’s tabernacle. And our abilities may never be recorded in history’s annals. Yet God has equipped us with the skills, aptitudes, and experiences He wants us to share with the world. May we serve Him faithfully, in His strength and for His glory.

하나님께 소중한 존재

어느 집의 벽에 그림 한 점이 오랫동안 걸려 있었지만, 아무도 주목하지 않고 잊힌 채로 있었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 그림이 벽에서 떨어져 수리를 하려고 미술 복원 전문가에게 가져갔더니, 그 전문가는 이 그림이 오래 전에 사라진 렘브란트의 명작 ‘경배하는 동방 박사’라고 했습니다. 그때까지 이 작품의 복제품만 남아 있는 것으로 알려졌으나 이제 그 원본이 나타난 것입니다. 그 그림의 가치는 갑자기 수억 달러로 치솟았습니다.

성경은 과소평가된 가치와 잊혀진 존귀함에 대해 또 다른 예를 보여줍니다. 성령의 영감을 받은 선지자 이사야는 하나님의 백성들에게 말하기를 외국으로 끌려가 고난을 받고 세상 사람들에게 업신여김을 당하여도, 하나님은 변함없이 그들과 함께 계실 것이라고 했습니다. “너는 두려워하지 말라 내가 너를 구속하였고 내가 너를 지명하여 불렀나니 너는 내 것이라”(이사야 43:1)하시며 안심시켰습니다. 그들이 “물 가운데로 지나갈 때나 불 가운데로 지나갈 때”(2절)에도 하나님의 신실하심은 변하지 않을 것이라 하셨습니다. 하나님은 그리스도 안에서 오실 천국을 가리켜 말씀하시며 언젠가 “내 이름으로 불려지는 모든 자” (7절)를 회복하시고, 다시 주님의 집으로 돌아가게 하실 것이라 약속하셨습니다.

하나님께서는 언젠가 그분의 자녀들인 우리를 한데 모으실 것입니다. 왜냐하면 우리 모두는 그분의 눈에 각각 “보배롭고 존귀”(4절)한 고유한 존재이기 때문입니다! 우리의 창조주는 무한히 선하고 자비로우시기 때문에 우리를 귀하게 여기십니다. 세상이 우리를 무시하더라도 하나님은 절대 그러지 않으십니다.

PRECIOUS TO GOD

The painting hung on the wall of a home for years, unnoticed and forgotten, until one day it fell. When it was taken to an art restorer for repairs, he discovered it was a long-lost Rembrandt masterpiece titled The Adoration of the Magi. It had been thought that only copies of the work remained, but here was the original. Suddenly the painting’s value skyrocketed to hundreds of millions of dollars.

The Bible paints another picture of underestimated value and forgotten worth. Isaiah the prophet, inspired by the Holy Spirit, told God’s people that even though they would be taken away to a foreign land where they would suffer and be devalued, He would still be with them: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine,” He assured them (ISAIAH 43:1). Though they would “pass through the waters” and “walk through the fire” (V. 2), His faithfulness to them would not change. With words that point to His coming kingdom in Christ, God promised that He would one day restore “everyone who is called by my name” (V. 7) and bring them home to Him.

God will one day gather all who are His because they “are precious and honored in [His] sight” (V. 4), each one an original! Our Creator values us because of His infinite kindness and mercy. The world may overlook us, but He never will.

누가 나의 이웃인가?

병상에 누워 있던 마리 코블은 자기의 생명을 구해준 배달기사를 보자 환히 웃었습니다. 코블은 집 앞 진입로에서 넘어지면서 머리를 다쳐 뇌출혈을 일으켰는데, 그 모습을 보았던 라힘 쿠퍼가 구급차를 부르고 도와주었던 것입니다. 가족이 문병을 와달라고 초대하자 그는 종종 코블이 좋아하는 달달한 간식을 가져와 회복을 도왔습니다.

이 이야기는 선한 사마리아인의 비유를 생각나게 합니다. 그 이야기는 영생을 얻으려면 무엇을 해야 하는지를 묻는 어떤 율법 선생의 질문에 예수님이 답한 것입니다. 예수님은 “율법에 기록된 것”을 행하라고 말씀하시며(누가복음 10:26), “네 이웃을 네 자신 같이 사랑하라”(27절)고 하셨습니다. 그러나 율법 선생은 계속해서 “내 이웃이 누구니이까?”라고 물었습니다(29절).

그 대답으로 예수님은 강도의 공격을 받아 거의 죽은 채로 버려진 남자에 대해 이야기하십니다. 두 사람 곧 제사장과 레위인이 그를 피해 지나갑니다. 그러나 “어떤 사마리아 사람은... 그를 보고 불쌍히 여겨”, “그 상처를 싸매고... 돌봐주었습니다”(33-34절). 그 사마리아인은 심하게 다쳐 도움이 필요했던 사람을 보고 아무런 편견 없이 능동적이고 신속하게 도왔습니다. 그냥 지나칠 수도 있었지만 인종이나 교리와 상관없이 그 사람을 도왔습니다.

이 말씀을 하시며 예수님은 “이 세 사람 중 누가 그 사람의 이웃이냐”고 물으셨습니다. “자비를 베푼 자니이다.”라고 대답하는 율법 선생에게 예수님은 “너도 가서 이와 같이 하라”(36-37절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리스도 안에서 우리도 다친 사람을 보면 불쌍히 여겨 지나치지 않고 도울 수 있습니다. 이것은 예수님의 사랑을 전하는 우리 모두에게 주시는 교훈입니다.

WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?

From her hospital bed, Marie Coble lit up when she saw the delivery driver whose help had likely saved her life. She’d fallen in her driveway and hit her head, causing a brain bleed. Seeing her injury, Raheem Cooper helped her while calling paramedics. Invited by family to visit her in the hospital, Raheem often brings sweet treats she enjoys to assist her recovery.

Their story brings to mind the parable of the Good Samaritan. The parable is Jesus’ reply to an expert’s question on what he must do to inherit eternal life. Do “what is written in the law,” Jesus said (LUKE 10:26), including “love your neighbor as yourself” (V. 27). But the expert persisted, asking, “Who is my neighbor?” (V. 29).

Christ’s answer describes a man attacked by robbers, left half dead, and then ignored by two people—a priest and a Levite—who passed him by. “But a Samaritan . . . took pity on him,” “bandaged his wounds, . . . and took care of him” (VV. 33-34). Seeing the hurting man in need, the Samaritan’s help was active, urgent, and without bias—looking past race or creed to assist someone he could’ve ignored.

Thus, Jesus asked, “Which of these three was a neighbor to the man?” “The one who had mercy on him,” the expert said. Said Jesus, “Go and do likewise” (VV. 36-37). In Christ, we too can find the compassion to help a hurting person instead of passing by. It’s a lesson for all in sharing Jesus’ love.

KNOWING AND LOVING OTHERS

Hippocrates (CA. 460–375 BC) brought medicine out of the realm of the superstitious and into the light of testing and observation. But he didn’t lose sight of the patient’s humanity. “It is far more important to know what person the disease has,” he said, “than what disease the person has.”

The apostle Paul cared for a church with multiple problems, yet he saw the humanity of each member—including a man who’d committed a sin “that even pagans do not tolerate” (1 CORINTHIANS 5:1). Paul dealt strongly with the “disease,” and the man repented. Now, as he wrote another letter to the church in Corinth, Paul had affirming instructions for all of them. He recognized that this man’s sin had affected everyone: “He has grieved all of you to some extent,” he said (2 CORINTHIANS 2:5). But since the man had turned from his sin, Paul said, “Reaffirm your love for him” (V. 8).

His motivation was clear: “I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you” (V. 4). He knew them all. And he loved them.

Sin affects us all. Behind each sin is a human being. When we’ve been wronged, it may be difficult to work toward restoration, yet that’s what God calls us to do. Know the person. Then, in Christ’s strength, love them.
