고향을 그리워하며

Ethel and Ed live in the high desert area of the Rocky Mountains. As we visited them on their ranch filled with memorabilia, the conversation turned to childhood stories of riding horses on the grasslands of North Dakota and herding cattle in Montana. They’re on in years now, and I could hear in their voices a longing for home.

Psalm 137 captures a similar emotion. The Israelites had been forced into captivity and longed for home. “By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept,” they said. “There our captors asked us for songs” (VV. 1, 3), prompting the Israelites to ask, “How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land?” (V. 4).

The longing to return from exile is a common theme throughout the Old Testament prophets. Eventually the Israelites did return. They rebuilt Jerusalem and resettled in the land, but it was never the same. When the temple was rebuilt, those who remembered its former glory wept because it was a shadow of the first (EZRA 3:12).

Old age may feel as if we’re in exile from our former selves as time takes a toll on mind and body. For those who know Jesus, this longing points not to the past but the future. That’s where my conversation turned with Ethel and Ed—a longing for our future home, where everything is made right and is far better than anything we can imagine.

LONGING FOR HOME

에텔과 에드는 로키 산맥의 고산 사막 지대에 살고 있습니다. 추억의 기념품들로 가득 찬 그들의 목장을 방문했을 때, 대화는 노스다코타 주의 초원에서 말을 타고 몬태나 주에서 소를 치던 어린 시절 이야기로 이어졌습니다. 이제 그들은 나이가 들었고, 나는 그들의 목소리에서 고향에 대한 그리움을 느낄 수 있었습니다.

시편 137편도 비슷한 감정을 담고 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 포로로 끌려가 고향을 그리워했습니다. 그들은 “우리가 바벨론의 여러 강변 거기에 앉아서... 울었도다... 우리를 사로잡은 자가 거기서 우리에게 노래를 청하였 도다”(1, 3절)라고 하면서 ”우리가 이방 땅에서 어찌 여호와의 노래를 부를까” (4절) 자문하였습니다.

포로 생활에서 귀환하기를 바라는 갈망은 구약 선지자들의 공통된 주제 였습니다. 마침내 이스라엘 백성들은 귀환했습니다. 그들은 예루살렘을 재건하고 그 땅에 다시 정착했지만 결코 예전과 같지 않았습니다. 성전이 재건되었을 때, 옛 성전의 영광스러운 모습을 기억하는 사람들은 그것이 옛 영광의 그림자에 불과했기에 눈물을 흘렸습니다(에스라 3:12).

노년기에는 시간이 흐르면서 몸과 마음에 생긴 세월의 흔적으로 마치 우리가 예전 모습으로부터 유배된 것 같이 느껴질 수 있습니다. 예수님을 아는 사람들은 이런 갈망이 과거가 아닌 미래를 향합니다. 에텔과 에드와 나눈 우리의 대화도 바로 그 주제로 이어졌습니다. 모든 것이 온전히 회복되고 우리가 상상 하는 어떤 것보다도 훨씬 더 좋을 미래의 본향을 향한 갈망으로 말입니다.

예수님 안에서의 기쁨

얼핏 떠오르기는 하지만 잡히지 않는 무언가를 갈망해 본 적이 있습니까? C.S. 루이스는 기쁨을 갈망했습니다. 그는 이렇게 썼습니다. “우리가 지금 단절된 느낌을 받는 우주의 무언가와 다시 하나 되기를 갈망하는 것, 우리가 항상 밖에서만 보아온 어떤 문 안쪽에 들어가기를 바라는 것... 그것이 우리의 진짜 상황을 가장 정직하게 보여주는 지표이다. 그리고 그 문 안으로 마침내 부름을 받는 것은 오래된 아픔의 치유가 될 것이다... 이 온전한 인간은 거기 기쁨의 샘에서 기쁨을 마시게 될 것이다.”

JOY IN JESUS

Do you ever long for something you see glimpses of but can’t quite grasp? C. S. Lewis longed for joy. He wrote, “Our longing to be reunited with something in the universe from which we now feel cut off, to be on the inside of some door which we have always seen from the outside, is . . . the truest index of our real situation. And to be at last summoned inside would be . . . the healing of that old ache. . . . The whole man is to drink joy from the fountain of joy.”

Lewis writes of the joy we’ll experience in full when we see Jesus face-to-face. As believers in Jesus, we have the joy of Christ through our relationship with Him and the work of His Spirit inside us. But sadly our joy is hampered by sin and death, the forces of evil, and the world’s brokenness. Paul writes, “Now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known” (1 CORINTHIANS 13:12). In verse 10, Paul talks of the coming “completeness.” This is when we’ll know and experience joy fully because we’re with Jesus.

Although we wait expectantly for that day, He gives us a small foretaste now of the overflowing, unhindered joy of heaven!

하나님께 온전히 헌신하기

모든 싱가포르 남자들처럼 나도 열여덟 살이 되었을 때 군대에 복무해야 했습니다. 솔직히 말해, 나는 2년 반 동안의 징집 생활을 내키지 않는 마음으로 임했습니다. 많은 젊은이들처럼 나는 주어진 명령을 딱 필요한 만큼만 따르며 최소한의 것만 하려고 노력했습니다.

그러나 어떤 이들은 자신들에게 주어진 임무에 온 힘을 쏟아부었고, 결국 그 경험을 통해 리더십과 인내를 배우며 많은 것을 얻었습니다. 돌이켜보니, 이러한 노력과 긍정적인 태도가 바로 하나님을 기쁘시게 했을 것임을 깨닫습니다. 마치 성경 속 요셉의 모습과 같이 말입니다.

노예로 팔려가고 나중에는 감옥에 갇혔음에도 불구하고, 요셉은 자신에게 맡겨진 책임을 최고의 헌신을 다해 감당했습니다. 요셉은 자신의 상황을 원망하는 대신 맡은 일을 진지하게 받아들였고, 그 결과 “주인(보디발)이 그의 소유를 다 요셉의 손에 위탁하였습니다”(창세기 39:6). 요셉은 또한 감옥 안에서도 책임자가 되었고, 결국에는 이집트 전체를 다스리게 되었습니다.

FULLY DEDICATED TO GOD

Like all Singaporean men, I had to serve in the country’s armed forces when I turned eighteen. To be honest, I approached the conscription, which lasted two-and-a-half years, most reluctantly. Like many other young men, I tried to do the minimum, obeying instructions to the letter—no more, no less.

Some, however, threw themselves into their tasks and ultimately gained much from their experience, learning about leadership and endurance. In hindsight, I realize that this type of effort and positive attitude would have pleased God—much like what Joseph showed in Scripture.

Despite being sold off as a slave and imprisoned later on, he fulfilled all his assigned responsibilities with the greatest dedication. Instead of resenting his situation, he took his role seriously, so much so that “Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care” (GENESIS 39:6). Joseph also ended up in charge of the prison— and, finally, all of Egypt.

Centuries later, the apostle Paul would also urge believers in Jesus: “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (COLOSSIANS 3:17). While our situations may be far from ideal, may God help us to be faithful in the tasks assigned to us, for we’re working for Him—the one who sees our true heart.

굳어져 가는 마음의 구조

자신의 심장을 본다는 것은 참 흥미로운 일입니다. 최근에 나는 그것을 경험해 보았습니다. 가슴 통증 때문에 의사를 찾아 검사를 받았는데, 내 심장에 적정 기준보다 훨씬 많은 양의 칼슘이 쌓여 있는 것을 직접 볼 수 있었습니다. 의사들이 ‘죽상동맥경화증’이라고 부르는, 동맥이 굳어져 가는 병이었습니다.

나는 식단과 운동습관에 커다란 변화를 주었습니다. 그러나 내 심장병 문제는 하루 아침에 생긴 것이 아니라는 사실 또한 깨달았습니다. 그것은 오랫 동안 쌓인 건강하지 못한 선택들의 결과였습니다. 시간이 지나면서 그런 습관들이 결국 내 심장 건강에 영향을 미친 것입니다.

성경은 영적으로 건강하지 못한 상태를 설명할 때도 이와 비슷한 표현을 사용합니다. 우리의 마음도 매일 하루 한 번씩의 선택이 쌓이면서 점차 하나님을 향해 굳어져 갈 수 있습니다. 히브리서 3:7-8은 시편 95:7-8을 인용하며 “오늘 너희가 그의 음성을 듣거든 광야에서... 거역하던 것 같이 너희 마음을 완고하게 하지 말라”고 말합니다. 하나님께서 그의 백성들을 애굽에서 구원해 내신 후, 백성들이 광야에서 “[하나님을] 시험하여 증험하였던”(9절) 것입니다.

하나님은 이스라엘 백성에게 신실하게 공급해 주셨지만, 그들은 하나님의 공급하심을 보려고 하지 않았습니다(9-10절). 우리는 어떻습니까? 날마다 조금씩 하나님을 향한 마음이 굳어지고 멀어지게 만드는 우리의 습관은 무엇입니까? 우리 모두는 그런 잘못된 선택을 할 때가 있습니다. 오늘, 바로 지금, 하나님께서 우리의 돌 같은 마음을 그분의 사랑으로 부드러워진 마음으로 바꿔주겠다고 하시니 정말 감사합니다(에스겔 36:26 참조).

ANATOMY OF A HARDENING HEART

It’s fascinating to see your own heart. Recently, I did. Chest pain led me to see a doctor, who ordered tests that allowed me to see that my heart has calcium buildup. More than I should have. Atherosclerosis, the doctors call it: hardening of the arteries.

I’ve made big diet and exercise changes. But I’ve also realized that my cardiac concerns didn’t emerge overnight. In my case, they were the fruit of unhealthy choices. In time, those habits couldn’t help but impact my heart’s health.

Scripture uses similar language to describe being spiritually unhealthy. Our hearts can gradually grow hardened toward God—one day and one choice at a time. Hebrews 3:7-8 (REFERENCING PSALM 95:7-8) says, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.” After God delivered His people from Egypt, they “tested and tried [Him]” (V. 9) during their time in the wilderness.

God had faithfully provided for His people, but they refused to see it (VV. 9-10). What about us? What habits nudge us away from God—day by day hardening our hearts against Him? We all make some of those choices. So I’m thankful that today, right now, God offers to exchange our hearts of stone for those softened by His love (SEE EZEKIEL 36:26).

깊은 뿌리

조경사 더글라스 켄트는 2025년 맹렬한 산불이 휩쓸고 간 로스앤젤레스의 새까맣게 탄 도시 근교를 돌아다니다가 뜻밖의 광경을 목격했습니다. 녹아내린 자동차와 불탄 건물들 바로 옆에 나무들이 푸른 잎을 간직한 채 살아 있었던 것입니다. 그 중 많은 나무들이 무성한 야자수와 잎사귀, 풍성한 열매, 단단한 줄기와 가지를 그대로 지니고 있었습니다. 도대체 어떻게 그럴 수 있었을까요?

지난 2년간 연속해서 겨울에 비가 많이 내려 나무가 땅속 깊이 뿌리를 내리고 수분을 흡수하면서 가지와 잎에 수분을 공급할 수 있었습니다. 그래서 불길 속에서도 나무들이 버틸 수 있었던 것입니다. 켄트는 말합니다. “나무가 깊이 뿌리를 내리면 불 속에서도 살아남을 수 있다는 것을 보았습니다.”

인생에서 만나는 불 같은 시련 속에서 우리의 믿음도 그와 같습니다. 그리스도와 그분의 사랑 안에 우리의 영적인 뿌리를 깊이 내릴 때, 우리는 “물 가에 심어진 나무가 그 뿌리를 강변에 뻗치고 더위가 올지라도 두려워하지 아니하며 그 잎이 청청하며 가무는 해에도 걱정이 없고 결실이 그치지 아니함 같게”(예레미야 17:8) 됩니다.

말에 거침이 없었던 예레미야는 “연약한 육신”만을 의지하는 자들은 “저주를 받을” 것이라고 경고했습니다(5절). “그는 사막의 떨기나무 같아서 좋은 일이 오는 것을 보지 못하고 광야 간조한 곳, 건건한 땅, 사람이 살지 않는 땅에 살리라”(6절). 하지만 하나님을 신뢰하는 것이 얼마나 더 좋은 지 모릅니다! 하나님의 변함없는 사랑으로 충분한 물을 공급받는 우리는 불 같은 고난의 시기에도 번성하며 그분 안에서 영적인 열매를 맺을 수 있습니다.

DEEP ROOTS

As Douglas Kent, a landscape architect, toured a charred Los Angeles neighborhood after the city’s raging 2025 wildfires, he encountered a shocking surprise—trees, alive and green, right next to melted cars and burned buildings. Many of them bore lush palms and leaves, abundant fruit, and strong trunks and branches. How?

After two consecutive rainy winters, the trees’ roots had reached deep into the soil to draw moisture, carrying it to branches and leaves. In a fire, they proved resistant. “What I saw,” said Kent, “was that if you were deep-rooted, you survived.”

Our faith during the fiery trials of life can be like that. As we set our spiritual roots deep in Christ and His love, we become “like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit” (JEREMIAH 17:8).

Jeremiah, who never minced words, warned that those who trust in “mere flesh” are “cursed” (V. 5). “That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes.” Instead, “they will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives” (VV. 5-6). How much better to trust in God! Well-watered by His sustaining love, we thrive even in raging times, bearing spiritual fruit in Him.

온라인 은행 앱을 열었더니 계좌에서 내가 출금한 적이 없는데도 500달러가 넘는 금액이 두 번이나 빠져나간 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 몹시 당황하여 은행에 전화해 보니 내 이름이 도용되었던 것입니다. 은행의 도움으로 신용 상태는 회복할 수 있었지만, 이 일을 경험하면서 앞으로 이런 도난을 방지하려면 정신을 바짝 차려야 한다는 것을 배우게 되었습니다.

요한복음 10장 10절에서 예수님은 “도둑이 오는 것은 도둑질하고 죽이고 멸망시키기” 위함이라고 경고하십니다. 예수님은 안식일에 병을 고치신 것(9:13-15)을 반대하는 종교 지도자들을 꾸짖으시며, 그들의 동기가 바로 도둑질하고 죽이고 멸망시키는 것임을 밝히 드러내셨습니다. 우리의 영적 원수 사탄은 하나님이 우리에게 베푸신 은혜와 예수님의 사망으로 우리에게 주어진 자유를 도둑질하려고 계획을 꾸밉니다. 그러나 앞에서 예수님이 자신을 양들의 이름을 부르는 선한 목자로 묘사하신 구절에서(10:2-4) 우리는 희망과 도움을 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 선한 목자의 양들은 “타인의 음성은 알지 못하는 고로 [도둑을] 따르지 아니하고 도리어 도망할”(5절) 것입니다.

LISTENING TO THE GOOD SHEPHERD

I opened my online banking app and discovered two withdrawals over $500 each, which I hadn’t made. Panicked, I called the bank and discovered my identity had been stolen. With the bank’s help, I was able to reinstate my good standing, but the experience taught me to be alert to prevent such thefts in the future.

In John 10:10, Jesus warns that “the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” Rebuking religious leaders who opposed Him for healing on the Sabbath (9:13-15), Jesus revealed their motive: to steal, kill, and destroy. Our spiritual enemy, Satan, plots to steal our understanding of God’s grace—and the freedom Jesus’ death provides for us. Hope and help come earlier in the passage where Jesus described Himself as the good shepherd who calls His sheep by name (10:2-4). The good shepherd’s sheep “will run away from [a thief] because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice” (V. 5).

We sometimes find ourselves victimized by the evil in our world. But our loving God invites us into a practice of discernment where we learn to recognize and avoid the voice of our enemy who wants to steal, kill, and destroy. As we tune our ears to the voice of our Good Shepherd, we can trust Him to lead us to life “to the full” (V. 10).

우리의 몸과 영혼을 유지시키는 무수히 많은 선물들(15절)은 우리가 깨닫든 깨닫지 못하든 항상 “여호와의 영광”(31절)을 가리키고 있습니다. 홉킨스는 인류가 하나님의 찬란한 영광을 보지 못할 때라도, 하나님의 선하심으로 말미암아 “사물의 깊숙한 곳에 항상 가장 귀한 신선함이 살아 있다”고 하면서 그의 시를 끝맺고 있습니다. 우리가 잠시 멈춰 바라보고 생각만 해봐도 “[우리가] 살아있는 동안”(33절) 하나님의 아름다움과 선하심을 보고, 믿고, 찬양할 이유는 무수히 많습니다.

SEEING GOD’S GRANDEUR

In nineteenth-century poet Gerard Manley Hopkins’ sonnet “God’s Grandeur,” this literary artist celebrates the countless ways creation is “charged”—intensely filled—with “the grandeur of God.” Hopkins describes God’s breathtaking glory flaming and glistening “like shining from shook foil.” But if God’s beauty is so vibrant, why do so many people miss it? Hopkins suggested one reason is that humanity has covered everything with “man’s smudge” and “man’s smell”—leaving many unable to see anything beyond themselves.

Psalm 104 is also a celebration of God’s beauty in creation. Using vivid imagery, the poet describes God “clothed with splendor and majesty” (V. 1), revealing His beauty, power, and care in wind and fire (V. 4), thunder and waves (V. 7), water, grass, and trees (VV. 10-16).

Countless gifts sustaining both body and soul (V. 15) point to “the glory of the Lord” (V. 31) whether we always realize it or not. In his poem, Hopkins concluded that, even when humanity is blind to God’s glory, because of His goodness, there always “lives the dearest freshness deep down things.” If only we’ll stop to see and wonder, there are countless reasons to see, believe in, and celebrate God’s beauty and goodness “as long as [we] live” (V. 33).

하나님의 좋은 땅

매년 늦은 봄 나는 정원에 오이 씨앗을 심습니다. 씨앗은 빠르게 잎을 내지만 열매를 보려면 시간이 걸립니다. 솔직히 나는 씨앗에 물을 주고 기다리던 어느 여름, 오이를 하나라도 딸 수 있을지 의심했었습니다. ‘내가 너무 많은 씨앗을 촘촘히 심은 것은 아닌지? 심을 때 땅이 충분히 따뜻하지 않았는지?’ 등, 여러 생각이 들었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 푸른 색의 동그란 것이 매달린 것을 보았고, 그 다음 주에 또 하나, 그리고 다른 하나를 더 발견 하였습니다. 몇 주 안 지나 덩굴만 있던 것이 일주일 동안 샐러드를 만들 수 있을 만큼 오이가 열렸습니다.

영적 성장도 때때로 그렇게 보입니다. 인내와 절제, 온유와 사랑(갈라디아서 5:22-23) 등, 우리가 기도해 온 것들이 항상 그렇게 열매로 나타나지는 않습니다. 그러나 기도, 성경공부, 예배, 다른 사람을 섬기는 등, 성장에 필요한 조건을 만들어 달라고 하나님께 간구하면 성령께서 성장을 이루게 해 주십니다.

이것이 누가복음 8장에서 예수님이 말씀하신 “씨 뿌리는 농부”(5절) 비유의 핵심입니다. 길가에 떨어진 씨앗들 일부를 “새들이 먹어버렸고”(5절), 바위에 떨어진 다른 씨앗들은 습기가 없으므로 말랐고(6절), 가시 떨기 속에 떨어진 씨앗들은 가시가 함께 자라서 기운을 막았지만(7절), 좋은 땅에 심어진 씨앗들은 “백 배의 결실을” 맺었습니다(8절).

하나님이 우리를 도우시므로 “좋은 땅”을 일구어 그분 안에서 성장하도록 합시다.

GOOD SOIL IN GOD

In late spring each year, I plant cucumber seeds in our garden. The seeds produce leaves quickly, but it takes time to see the fruit. In fact, one summer after I watered the seeds and waited, I questioned whether I’d get any cucumbers at all. I thought, Did I put too many seeds too close together, or was the ground not warm enough when I’d planted them? But one day, I spotted a green bulb. The next week, I spotted another. Then another. Within a few weeks, we moved from only vines to almost enough fruit to make salad for a week.

Spiritual growth looks like that sometimes. We don’t always see the things we’ve been praying for: patience, self-control, being gentle and loving (SEE GALATIANS 5:22-23). But if we ask God to help us create the conditions needed for growth—prayer, studying the Scriptures, worship, serving others—the Holy Spirit will produce the growth.

This is the crux of the parable Jesus shares in Luke 8: “A farmer went out to sow his seed” (V. 5). “The birds ate” some of the seeds that fell on the path (V. 5). Others landed on rocky ground, where they received no moisture and withered (V. 6). Some more fell among thorns and were choked before they could grow (V. 7). But the seed that was planted on good soil yielded a crop that was “a hundred times more than was sown” (V. 8).

As God helps us, let’s cultivate “good soil” and grow in Him.

추수를 기다리며

1962년, 조앤 셰틀러와 앤 페처는 예수님에 대해 들어본 적이 없는 이들에게 복음을 전하기 위해 버스와 도보로 고된 여정에 나서며 필리핀의 험준한 산악 지대로 들어갔습니다.

그들은 5년 동안 성경을 현지어로 번역했지만, 발랑가오 마을 사람들은 받아들이지 않았습니다. 그런데도 마을 사람들은 비행기로 새로운 보급품들이 들어올 수 있도록 원시적인 활주로를 짓는 데는 도움을 주었습니다. 어느 날, 주민들이 “다른 세계에서 온 마법”이라고 부르는 비행기가 와서 조종사가 중병에 걸린 임신한 마을 여인을 멀리 떨어진 병원으로 데려다 주었습니다. 나중에 몸이 회복된 여인이 건강한 아기와 함께 비행기를 타고 돌아오자, 사람들은 그동안 들어온 “그 하나님”에 관해 묻기 시작했습니다. 곧 마을에는 그리스도를 믿는 사람들로 가득 찬 교회가 생겼습니다.

예수님의 이야기를 전하는 우리 모두는 상대방이 듣지 않는 것 같아 낙담할 때가 있습니다. 바울 사도도 그런 일이 있을 줄 알았습니다. 그는 갈라디아 교인들에게 복음을 심고 거두는 일의 중요성을 설명한 후, 씨 뿌리는 사람도 지칠 수 있다는 사실을 인식하고 편지를 읽는 자들에게 “선을 행하되 낙심하지 말라”(갈라디아서 6:9)고 격려했습니다.

조앤과 앤의 첫 5년의 사역은 분명 실망스러웠습니다. 하지만 그들은 계속 씨를 뿌렸고 마침내 수확을 거두었습니다. “포기하지” 맙시다(9절). 구원의 메시지는 분명히 “영생을 거두게” 될 것입니다(8절).

WAITING FOR THE HARVEST

In 1962, Joanne Shetler and Anne Fetzer made an arduous trek by bus and foot into the rugged mountains of the Philippines to share the gospel with people who’d never heard of Jesus.

For five years, they translated Scripture into the people’s language, but the Balangao villagers weren’t receptive. They did, however, help build a primitive landing strip so new supplies could be flown in. One day, a plane dubbed “magic from another world” by the people arrived. The pilot then flew a deathly ill, pregnant village woman to a faraway clinic. When the plane later returned with the recovered woman and her healthy newborn, the people began asking about “this God” they’d been told about. Soon the village had a church full of believers in Christ.

All of us who share the story of Jesus have times of discouragement when our listeners don’t seem to hear. The apostle Paul knew that can happen. After explaining to the Galatians the importance of planting and harvesting the gospel, he recognized that a sower may grow tired. So he challenged his listeners not to “become weary in doing good” (GALATIANS 6:9).

The first five years of Joanne and Anne’s work was surely discouraging. But they kept sowing, and eventually they reaped a harvest. Let’s not “give up” (V. 9). Surely, the message of salvation will “reap eternal life” (V. 8).

하나님을 아는 지식에 자라가기

수영장에 뛰어든 순간, 물안경에 물이 가득 차서 앞을 거의 볼 수 없었 습니다. 정식으로 수영을 배운 적이 없이 즉흥적으로 참가한 시합에서 나는 천천히 두 번 왕복을 마쳤습니다. 몇 년 후, 수영 교습을 받고 올바른 호흡법과 수영 기법을 배운 후 경기용 네 가지 수영법을 모두 즐길 수 있었습니다.

적절한 훈련이 얼마나 큰 차이를 만들어내는지 모릅니다. 성경 읽기도 마찬가지입니다. 우리가 읽는 말씀의 맥락과 의미를 이해할 때, 우리의 믿음이 자라고 말씀을 삶에 올바르게 적용할 수 있습니다.

바울은 디모데가 믿음 안에 굳게 서서, 다툼을 피하고, 거짓 교사들에게 속지 않기를 바랐습니다. 사도는 그의 마지막 편지에서 디모데에게 성경을 연구하라고 촉구합니다. “네가 진리의 말씀을 옳게 분별하며 부끄러울 것이 없는 일꾼으로 인정된 자로 자신을 하나님 앞에 드리기를 힘쓰라”(디모데후서 2:15).

내가 올바른 수영 기법을 배우고 연습하면서 더 낫게 수영을 할 수 있었듯이, 우리의 영적 삶에서 성경에 나오는 단어와 개념을 배우고 이해함으로써 하나님을 아는 지식이 자라나 진리와 거짓을 분별하며 지혜를 얻을 수 있게 됩니다. 성경말씀을 읽으면서 계속 자라나 “모든 선한 일을 행할 능력을 갖추도록”(3:17) 합시다.

GROWING OUR KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

As soon as I jumped into the pool, my goggles filled with water, and I could barely see. Despite having no formal swimming instruction, I slowly persevered for the two laps of a race I had entered on a whim. Years later, after taking lessons and learning the proper breathing and swimming techniques, I enjoyed learning all four competitive swim strokes.

What a difference it makes when we have the proper training. The same applies to reading the Bible. When we understand the context and meaning of what we’re reading, we can grow in our faith and properly apply it to our lives.

Paul wanted Timothy to stand firm in his faith, avoid quarrels, and not be deceived by false teachers. In his final letter, the apostle urged Timothy to study the Scriptures: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2 TIMOTHY 2:15).

As I learned and practiced proper swimming techniques, I became a better swimmer. In our spiritual walk, as we learn and understand the words and concepts in the Bible, we grow in our knowledge of God—enabling us to distinguish truth from falsehood and gain wisdom. As we read Scripture, let’s continue to grow “so that [we] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (3:17).
