측량할 수 없는 하나님

2023년 2월, 제임스 웹 우주망원경은 또 하나의 놀라운 발견을 해냈습니다. 인류가 지금까지 우주를 들여다볼 수 있었던 영역을 넘어 6개의 새로운 은하계를 발견한 것입니다. 이 발견은 우리가 우주에 대해 알고 있던 많은 것을 뒤집어 놓았습니다. 한 천문학자는 말합니다. “우리는 예상치 못한 것을 발견했고, 이는 실제로 과학에 문제들을 던져 주었습니다.” 그리고 어떤 천체물리학자는 “모른다고 잘못된 것은 아니라” 고 사과하듯이 말했습니다.

하나님은 계속해서 우리 모두를 놀라게 하시는 것 같습니다. 우주 망원경이 등장하기 훨씬 전 선지자 이사야가 오늘날의 과학자들에게 직접 말하는 것 같습니다. “너는 알지 못하였느냐? 듣지 못하였느냐? 하나님 여호와 땅 끝까지 창조하신 이는... 명철이 한이 없으시다”(이사야 40:28). 이사야는 그 천체물리학자보다 먼저 “하나님의 이해력은 누구도 측량할 수 없다”(28 절)라고 말했습니다.

그러나 우리가 만일 거기서 멈춘다면 우리는 이 구절의 아름다움을 놓치게 됩니다. 헤아릴 수 없는 하나님은 비인격적인 분이 아닙니다. 그 여섯 개의 은하계와 다른 모든 것을 창조하신 분이(26절) “피곤한 자에게는 능력을 주시며 무능한 자에게는 힘을 더하시는”(29절) 바로 그 하나님이십니다. 우주의 하나님은 또한 그분을 앙망하는 자들을 “독수리가 날개치며 올라감 같이”(31 절) 도우시는 인격적인 하나님이십니다. 측량할 수 없는 하나님은 우리가 아는 하나님, 즉 능력과 힘으로 우리 삶 속에 말씀하시는 분이시니 안심해도 됩니다.

UNFATHOMABLE GOD

In February 2023, the James Webb Space Telescope made another remarkable discovery. Beyond where humankind had previously been able to peer into the universe, it discovered six new galaxies. This discovery upended much of what we know about space. One astronomer remarked, “It turns out we found something so unexpected it actually creates problems for science.” An astrophysicist said almost apologetically, “There is nothing wrong with not knowing.”

It seems that God continues to surprise us all. The prophet Isaiah, long before the advent of space telescopes, seems to be talking directly to the scientists of today: “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is . . . the Creator of the ends of the earth” (ISAIAH 40:28). He goes on, predating that astrophysicist’s words, “[God’s] understanding no one can fathom” (V. 28).

But if we stop there, we miss the beauty of this passage. He who is unfathomable is not impersonal. He who created those six galaxies, and all the others (V. 26), is the same God who “gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (V. 29). The God of the universe is also the personal God who helps those who hope in Him to “soar on wings like eagles” (V. 31). Rest assured, the unfathomable God is the one we do know—the one who speaks into our lives with power and strength.

뿔 달린 모세? 1515년에 완성된 미켈란젤로의 걸작 조각품에 묘사된 모세의 모습입니다. 이마 바로 위 모세의 머리카락에서 두 개의 뿔이 튀어나와 있습니다.

미켈란젤로 뿐만 아니라 많은 르네상스 및 중세 화가들은 모세를 그렇게 그렸습니다. 왜 그랬을까요? 당시 히브리어 성경의 라틴어 번역본이 모세가 하나님을 영접하며 모세의 얼굴에 광채가 난다고 묘사한 것과 관련이 있습니다 (출애굽기 34:29 참조). 원어에서는 “뿔”과 관련된 단어를 사용하여 모세의 얼굴에서 광채가 나는 빛의 “광선”을 묘사했는데, 라틴어 성경에서는 이를 문자 그대로 번역했습니다. 모세의 광채를 잘못 해석했던 것입니다.

READING, WRITING, AND JESUS

Moses with horns? That’s the way he’s depicted in Michelangelo’s masterpiece sculpture completed in 1515. Two horns protrude from Moses’ hair just above his forehead.

Michelangelo wasn’t alone—many Renaissance and medieval artists depict Moses that way. Why? It has to do with the Latin translation of the Hebrew Bible available at the time, which described Moses’ radiant face after being in God’s presence (SEE EXODUS 34:29). The original language uses a word related to “horns” to describe “beams” of light shining from Moses’ face, and the Latin Vulgate Bible translated it literally. Moses was “misread.”

Have you ever misread someone? After a man unable to walk from birth was healed by Peter in Jesus’ name (ACTS 3:1-10), the apostle told his fellow Israelites that they had misread Jesus. “You killed the author of life,” he said pointedly, “but God raised him from the dead” (V. 15). He continued, “This is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer” (V. 18). Peter even said Moses had pointed to Christ (V. 22).

It was “by faith in the name of Jesus,” a “faith that comes through him,” that the man’s life was transformed (V. 16). No matter how we’ve misunderstood Him or what our past contains, Christ welcomes us when we turn to Him. The author of life stands ready to write new beginnings for us!

하나님의 사랑을 널리 실천하기

미시간 주의 어느 겨울날 있었던 일입니다. 한 배달원이 어느 할머니가 집 앞의 눈을 치우고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 이 배달원은 멈춰 서서 여든 한 살의 할머니에게 자기가 나머지 눈을 다 치우겠다고 말했습니다. 다른 소포 배달이 늦어질까 걱정이 된 할머니는 다른 삽을 들고 함께 눈을 치웠습니다. 두 사람은 이웃들이 멀리서 지켜보는 가운데 거의 15분 동안 나란히 서서 일했습니다. 할머니는 “도와줘서 고마워요. 하나님이 당신을 보내주셨네요.”라고 말했습니다.

예수님은 율법교사와의 대화 중에 이웃 사랑의 개념을 새롭게 정의 하셨습니다(누가복음 10:25-37). 예수님이 이웃사랑에 대해 그가 잘 알고 있는 법의 해석을 물었을 때, 그 율법교사는 이렇게 대답합니다. “네 마음을 다하며 목숨을 다하며 힘을 다하며 뜻을 다하여 주 너의 하나님을 사랑하고 또한 네 이웃을 네 자신 같이 사랑하라 하였나이다”(27절).

그러자 예수님은 강도 당한 피해자를 외면한 두 종교 지도자에 대한 이야기를 하시면서, 그 당시 대부분의 유대 지도자들이 멸시했던 사마리아인이 오히려 자신을 희생하며 어려움에 처한 사람을 도와주었다고 말씀하셨습니다 (30-35절). 율법교사가 강도 당한 사람에게 자비를 베푼 그 사람이 이웃처럼 사랑했다는 사실을 깨닫자, 예수님은 그에게 그 사마리아인과 같이 하라고 권면하셨습니다(36-37절).

다른 이들을 사랑하는 일은 항상 쉽고 편하지는 않습니다. 하지만 사랑을 넘치도록 우리에게 베푸시는 예수님은 우리도 선한 사마리아인처럼 우리의 이웃을 사랑할 수 있게 도와주실 것입니다.

EXTENDING GOD’S LOVE

One winter day in Michigan, a delivery man noticed an elderly woman shoveling snow off her driveway. He stopped and convinced the eighty-one-year-old to let him finish the job. Concerned that he’d be late delivering his other packages, she retrieved another shovel. They worked side by side for almost fifteen minutes as her neighbors watched from afar. “I’m thankful you helped me,” she said. “You’re God-sent.”

During a conversation with an expert in the law, Jesus redefined the concept of loving our neighbors (LUKE 10:25-37). When Jesus asked him to interpret the law he knew so well, the expert said, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’ ” (V. 27).

Then Jesus shared a story about two religious leaders who ignored a robbery victim. But a Samaritan—a person most Jewish leaders in those days considered inferior—sacrificed to help the man in need (VV. 30-35). When the expert of the law realized that the one who had mercy on the man had loved like a neighbor, Jesus encouraged him to do likewise (VV. 36-37).

Loving others isn’t always easy or convenient. But as Jesus overwhelms us with His love, He’ll help us love all our neighbors like the Good Samaritan did.

1943년, 메릴랜드 주 시골에 있는 “샹그릴라”라는 캠프가 미국 대통령 프랭클린 D. 루즈벨트를 위한 휴양지로 구입되었습니다. 백악관 웹사이트에 따르면 소박하고 조용하며 외딴 곳에 위치한 이곳은 대통령들이 “혼자서 평온한 시간을 보낼 수 있는 장소”일 뿐만 아니라 “외국 지도자들을 위해 일하고 접대하기에 이상적인 장소”입니다. 드와이트 아이젠하워가 대통령이 된 후 자신의 아버지와 손자 이름을 따서 이 휴양지 이름을 ‘캠프 데이비드’로 바꿨고, 그 이름이 지금까지 그대로 유지되고 있습니다. 보안 조치가 강화된 것을 제외하고는, 캠프는 거의 자연 그대로 현대화되지 않아서 미국대통령과 그의 가족이 일상에서 벗어나 휴식을 취하기에 완벽한 장소로 남아있습니다.

JESUS—OUR PLACE OF REST

In 1943, a camp in rural Maryland called Shangri-La was purchased as a retreat for US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Rustic, quiet, and remote, it provided “an opportunity for solitude and tranquility,” according to the White House website, “as well as an ideal place to work and host foreign leaders.” When Dwight Eisenhower became president, he renamed this retreat Camp David in honor of his father and his grandson, and the name stuck. Aside from increased security measures, there has been very little modernizing of the camp. It remains the perfect place for US presidents and their families to escape and rest.

Believers in Jesus also have a retreat where we can find rest in the midst of our turbulent world. In Psalm 32:7, King David wrote, “You [God] are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.” David recognized that God was his true place of safety.

Jesus welcomes us to find rest and restoration in Him. He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (MATTHEW 11:28-29).

He can be our place of rest any time, every time, and all the time.

성경이 얼마나 중요할까요? 많은 나라에서 목숨을 걸고 성경을 모국어로 번역하는 사람들이 있을 정도로 성경은 우리에게 사활이 달린 책입니다. 이분들은 평신도들이지만 종종 그 나라 사람들이 이해할 수 있는 언어로 성경 말씀을 번역하다가 당국에 체포되기도 합니다.

예수를 믿는 이들에게 적대적인 어떤 나라의 여성 번역자는 말했습니다. “저는 이 일을 꼭 완수해야 합니다. 사랑하는 사람들이 그리스도 안에서 구원을 경험하는 것을 보고 싶습니다.” 또 어떤 남성은 일반 시민들을 조직하여 비밀리에 성경을 번역하면서 그 나라 교회에서 성숙한 신자들을 양육하는데 성경이 필수적 이라고 설명합니다. “교회를 시작할 수는 있지만... [모국어로 된 성경이 없으면] 일반적으로 한 세대 밖에 지속되지 못합니다.”

이들이 왜 이렇게 성경 번역에 매달릴까요? 이 세상에 성경 같은 책은 없기 때문입니다. 성경이 오랜 세월을 거쳐 보존되어 온 것은 아주 독특합니다. 성경의 진정성과 사람 마음의 표현은 정확합니다. 성경은 “살아 있고 활력이 있어... 마음의 생각과 뜻을 판단합니다”(히브리서 4:12). 뿐만 아니라 “모든 성경은 하나님의 감동으로 된 것으로”(디모데후서 3:16) 하나님께 영감을 받아 기록되었습니다. 그리고 무엇보다 중요한 것은 성경이 “그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음으로 말미암아 구원에 이르는”(15절) 근거와 실체를 보여준다는 사실입니다.

성경을 읽고 소중히 여기며 성경에 의지해 살아갑시다. 하나님께서 우리에게 주시는 능력대로, 전 세계 사람들이 성경을 받아들이고 이해하도록 도웁시다.

UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE

How important is the Bible? It’s so vital that people in many countries risk their lives to translate it into their native languages. Often, these are ordinary believers in Jesus who face arrest for translating the words of Scripture into a heart language others can understand.

One female translator from a country hostile to believers in Jesus said, “I must complete this work. I want to see my beloved ones experience salvation in Christ.” And a man who organizes regular citizens to clandestinely translate Scripture explains that the Bible is essential to growing mature believers in local churches: “You can start a church, but . . . [without] the Bible in its heart language, it will typically only last one generation.”

Why are they doing this? Because there’s no other book like the Bible. Its preservation through the centuries is unique. Its authenticity and its representation of the human heart is accurate. It’s “alive and active . . . [and] judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (HEBREWS 4:12). And “all Scripture is Godbreathed” (2 TIMOTHY 3:16), inspired by Him. And most important, it reveals the source and reality of “salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (V. 15).

Let’s read, cherish, and live by the Scriptures. And as God provides, let’s help those around the world receive it and understand it.

그리스도의 평강

논쟁으로 이길 수 있을까요? 절대로 아닙니다. 아디론댁 파크 지역에서 환경운동가들과 소상공인들 사이에 심한 “아디론댁 전쟁”이 시작되자 작은 마을의 한 지도자가 주민들에게 그렇게 경고했습니다. 이 다툼은 뉴욕 주 북부 지역의 천혜의 자연 지역을 그대로 보존할지 개발할지에 대한 싸움이었습니다.

지역의 한 지도자는 환경운동가에게 “네가 왔던 곳으로 돌아가!”라고 소리쳤습니다. 그러나 곧 “서로 고함지르지 말고 대화해 보자”고 하는 새로운 의견이 대두되었습니다. 그리고 서로 싸우는 진영 사이에 다리를 놓기 위한 ‘공동연합전선’이 형성되었습니다. 시민들의 대화가 진척을 보여 거의 백만 에이커의 야생지가 보존되면서 동시에 아디론댁 지역의 마을들은 지난 20년 보다 더 발전을 이루게 되었습니다.

PEACE OF CHRIST

Would they win by arguing? Never, a small-town leader warned residents in Adirondack Park where a pitched battle between environmentalists and small-business owners ignited the “Adirondack Wars.” The name described their fight whether to save the area’s pristine wilderness in Upstate New York or develop it.

“Go back wherever you came from!” a local leader had shouted at an environmentalist. But soon a new message emerged. “Don’t yell at each other. Try to talk to each other.” A Common Ground Alliance was formed to build bridges between warring factions. Civic dialogue led to progress—with nearly a million acres of wild land protected even as Adirondack towns grew more prosperous than they’d been in twenty years.

Peaceful coexistence is a start, but Paul taught something even better. To the new believers in Colossae, he said, “Rid yourselves of . . . anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips” (COLOSSIANS 3:8). Paul urged them to exchange their old ways for a new nature in Christ: “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience,” he wrote (V. 12).

The invitation is offered today to all believers: surrender our old cantankerous lives to new life in Christ. “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace” (V. 15). Then, in our peace, the world will see Jesus.

앞으로 나아갈 길

‘어떻게 할까?’ 스콧과 브리는 성경과 동떨어진 삶을 살아가는 친구와 가족들과 어떤 사이로 지내야 할지 고민이 깊었습니다. 그러다 성경공부를 하고 기도를 하면서 앞길이 보였습니다. 첫째, 친구와 가족들을 더 사랑했습니다. 둘째, 하나님께서 원래 선하게 지으신 그들의 진실되고 좋은 점들을 말해주었습니다. 그 다음, 성경의 지혜를 가지고 그들과 사랑으로 소통하고 싶다고 말해주었습니다. 시간이 지나면서 스콧과 브리가 예수님 닮은 사랑을 보여주면서 대단한 신뢰의 관계로 발전하게 되었습니다.

호세아도 하나님과 남편을 존중하지 않는 삶을 사는 아내와 어떻게 지내야 할지 고민했을 것입니다. 하나님은 이 선지자에게 “너는 다시 가서 간음한 네 아내를 사랑하라”(호세아 3:1, 현대인의 성경)고 지시하셨습니다. 선지자는 아내를 더욱 분명하게 사랑하면서, 동시에 하나님 앞에서 맺은 그들의 관계에 있어 옳고 진실된 것들을 말했습니다(3절). 그와 아내와의 관계는 거역하는 옛 이스라엘 백성을 다루시는 하나님 자신을 상징하였습니다. 그들은 잘못된 길을 선택했지만 하나님은 앞으로 나아갈 길을 열어주시고 “그들을 마음껏 사랑할 것”(14:4, 현대인의 성경)이라고 하시면서 하나님의 길은 “정직하니” 그 길을 선택하라고 하셨습니다(9절).

하나님이 주시는 지혜와 분별력을 힘입어 비성경적인 삶의 방식을 선택한 사람들에게 하나님의 사랑과 진리를 계속 전합시다. 하나님께서 보여주신 길이 우리가 나아갈 길입니다.

A PATH FORWARD

What do we do? Scott and Bree agonized over how to relate to friends and family members who’d chosen unbiblical ways of life. As they studied the Scriptures and prayed, a path forward emerged: First, they reinforced their love for their friends and loved ones; second, they expressed what was true and good about them based on God’s good design; and third, they shared how they would lovingly interact with them based on Scriptural wisdom. In time, greater relational trust was built as Scott and Bree extended Christlike love.

Hosea likely wondered how to relate to his wife—a woman whose chosen way of life didn’t honor God or him. God directed the prophet to “show your love to your wife again, though she is . . . an adulteress” (HOSEA 3:1). The prophet evidently reinforced his love for her while also expressing what was right and true for them and their relationship before God (V. 3). His relationship with her symbolized God’s own challenge with rebellious ancient Israel. Though they’d chosen a wrong course, He provided a path forward, telling them His “love will know no bounds” (14:4 NLT) but to choose His ways for they “are right” (V. 9).

As God provides wisdom and discernment, let’s continue to extend His love and truth to those who’ve chosen unbiblical ways of life. His example provides the path forward.

주는 기쁨

다섯 시간의 비행기 여행 중에 한 여성이 열심히 스웨터를 뜨고 있었습니다. 실 사이로 뜨게바늘을 왔다 갔다 하던 그 여성은 다섯 달 된 아기가 넋을 잃고 그 모습을 바라보고 있는 것을 알았습니다. 그러자 이 여성에게 좋은 생각이 떠올랐습니다. 만들고 있던 스웨터는 놔두고 대신에 자기만 바라보는 이 아기에게 모자를 만들어주자는 것입니다. 남아 있는 비행 시간 동안 모자를 만들어야 하는데 단 한 시간밖에 남지 않았습니다. 그 여성이 아기 엄마에게 작은 모자를 선물하자 온 가족이 그것을 받으며 기뻐했고 옆의 승객들도 웃으며 갈채를 보냈습니다.

깜짝 선물은 종종 우리 마음을 기쁘게 해줍니다. 필요했던 것이든 그냥 갖고 싶은 것이든, 선물을 주는 사람은 선물을 통해 우리에게 그리스도의 사랑도 함께 전해줄 수 있습니다. 초대교회 때 다비다는 옷을 나눠주기도 하며 “착한 일과 구제 사업을 많이 하는”(사도행전 9:36, 새번역) 사람이었습니다. 다비다가 죽자 그의 도움을 받았던 사람들은 “[다비다가] 그들과 함께 있을 때에 지은 속옷과 겉옷”(39절)을 내보여 주었습니다. 그들은 다비다의 친절과 그들의 삶에 끼친 영향에 대해 증언했습니다.

이야기는 극적으로 반전되어 베드로가 성령의 능력으로 다비다를 다시 살려냈습니다(40절). 그의 이러한 사역으로 다비다를 사랑하는 사람들에게는 기쁨이 넘쳤고, 다른 많은 사람들도 그리스도를 믿게 되었습니다(42절).

우리의 친절한 행동은 우리가 할 수 있는 가장 기억에 남는 증언이 될 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 베푸시는 것으로 우리도 오늘 다른 사람들에게 깜짝 선물을 베풀어 줍시다.

THE JOY OF GIVING

On a five-hour flight, a woman vigorously crocheted a sweater. As she moved her hook in and out of her yarn, she noticed a five-month-old baby who was mesmerized by her motions. Then the woman got an idea: instead of finishing the sweater she was working on; she would make a hat for her little admirer. She had to finish the hat in the remaining time of the flight, however—just one hour! When the woman presented the child’s mom with the little hat, the whole family accepted it with joy while the other passengers smiled and applauded.

Surprise gifts are often received with joy. Whether they’re gifts we need or simply want, through them the giver may also show us the kindness of Christ. In the early church, Tabitha was known for sharing clothes and “always doing good and helping the poor” (ACTS 9:36). When she died, her beneficiaries displayed “the robes and other clothing that [she] had made . . . them” (V. 39). They testified about her kindness and how she’d touched their lives.

In a dramatic turn of events, Peter, through the Holy Spirit’s power, brought Tabitha back to life (V. 40). His actions filled those who loved her with joy—and led many others to believe in Christ (V. 42).

Our actions of kindness can be some of the most memorable testifying we do. As God provides, let’s share some surprise gifts with others today.

후한 선물을 받았을 때

익명의 기부처에서 1만 달러를 받은 리디아는 그 돈을 자신에게는 거의 쓰지 않고 동료와 가족과 홍수 피해자, 자선 단체에 아끼지 않고 기부했습니다. 리디아는 2백 명을 대상으로 아무 조건 없이 은행 송금으로 1만 달러를 기부했을 때 사람들이 어떻게 반응하는지 알아보는 한 연구 프로그램에 자신도 모르게 들어가 있었습니다. 그 연구에 따르면 선물로 받은 돈의 ‘2/3 이상’이 다시 다른 사람들에게 돌아간 것으로 나타났습니다. 비영리 미디어 기관 TED의 책임자 크리스 앤더슨은 이 이야기를 전하면서 “이 결과에 의하면... 우리 인간은 후한 대접을 받으면 자신도 그렇게 한다” 고 설명했습니다.

아끼지 않고 나누며 사는 사람들은 자신을 만드신 하나님의 마음을 삶으로 보여준다는 것을 우리는 성경을 통해 배웁니다. 하나님은 어떤 사람들에게만이 아니라 누구에게나, 심지어 “은혜를 모르는 자와 악한 자” (누가복음 6:35)에게도 후히 주시고 자비롭고 친절하십니다. 그래서 예수님은 하나님의 성품을 보여주려는 사람은 원수까지도 “사랑하고” “선대하며” “아무것도 바라지 말고 꾸어주라”고 가르치셨습니다(32-35절).

우리가 되돌려 받을 기대를 하지 않고 베풀 때, 그것이 우리에게 결코 해가 되지 않는 삶의 방식이라는 것을 알게 될 것입니다. 예수님도 이 점에 대해 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “주라 그리하면 너희에게 줄 것이니... 너희가 헤아리는 그 헤아림으로 너희도 헤아림을 도로 받을 것이니라”(38절). 후히 주시는 하나님을 따라 우리도 후히 나눌 때 우리 삶은 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 면에서 풍요로워질 것입니다.

RESPONDING TO GENEROSITY

When Lydia was gifted $10,000 by anonymous donors, she spent little of it on herself. Instead, she gave generous gifts to coworkers, family, flood victims, and charities. Lydia, unbeknownst to her, was part of a study following how two hundred people responded to a no-strings-attached gift of $10,000 through a bank transfer. That study found that more than twothirds of that gifted money was given away. Sharing this story, Chris Anderson, head of the TED non-profit media organization, reflected, “It turns out that . . . we human beings are wired to respond to generosity with generosity.”

In Scripture, we find that when people live generously, they reflect the heart of the God who made them. God is generous, merciful, and kind, not just to some but to all—even “to the ungrateful and wicked” (LUKE 6:35). So Jesus instructed those who desire to reflect God’s character to “love,” “do good to,” and “lend to” even enemies “without expecting to get anything back” (VV. 32-35).

When we give without expecting anything back, we’ll find that it’s never a way of life that harms us. Jesus pointed this out too, saying, “Give, and it will be given to you. . . . With the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (V. 38). When we respond to God’s generosity by living generously, we find we’re enriched in countless ways.

무지개와 하나님의 약속

나이아가라 폭포의 놀라운 광경을 서서 바라보고 있는데 다른 관광객들이 갑자기 사진을 찍기 시작하는 것이었습니다. 사람들이 보는 방향을 바라보니 강을 가로질러 아치형의 무지개가 떠 있었습니다. 무지개는 호스슈 폭포 아래에서 시작해 아메리칸 폭포 밑에서 끝나는 것 같았습니다.

원래 무지개는 끝나는 지점이 없습니다. 무지개는 완전한 원형인데 나는 그 모양을 딱 한 번 본 적이 있습니다. 그 때 비행기 창밖을 내다보고 있었는데 마침 해가 꼭 맞는 방향에 위치하면서 구름 위 멀리에 완전 원형을 갖춘 무지개가 나타났습니다. 비행기가 방향을 틀면서 그 원이 사라질 때까지 나는 황홀하게 앉아서 그 광경을 바라보았습니다.

그 무지개를 보며 여러 가지 생각이 났습니다. 하나님에게는 시작도 끝도 없으시며 우리가 어디에 있든지 그분의 약속을 보여주신다는 생각도 했습니다. 무한하고 영원하신 우리 하나님은 다시는 이 땅의 홍수로 “모든 육체를 멸하지” 않겠다는 언약의 증거(15절)로 “[그분의] 무지개를 구름 속에 두셨습니다” (창세기 9:13). 지금도 우리 창조주 하나님은 그분의 피조물인 우리에게 무지개를 통해 그 약속을 잊지 않게 하십니다(13-16절).

이사야 40장 28절은 “영원하신 하나님 여호와, 땅 끝까지 창조하신 이는... 명철이 한이 없으시다”고 말합니다. 생각만해도 놀랍습니다! 우리는 우리와의 약속을 지키시는 하나님에 대해 영원히 배워도 다 배우지 못하며, 그분의 명철하심의 깊이에 결코 이르지 못할 것입니다.

RAINBOWS AND GOD’S PROMISES

While I stood watching the amazing power of Niagara Falls, I noticed that other tourists suddenly began taking photos. Looking in the same direction, I saw a rainbow had appeared—arching across the river. It seemed to begin at the base of the Horseshoe Falls, ending at the base of the American Falls.

In reality, there’s no end to a rainbow. A rainbow is a full circle, something I’ve seen only once. I was gazing out an airplane window when the sun—shining in just the right direction—revealed a fullcircle rainbow in the distance above the clouds. I sat enthralled with the sight until the plane turned and the circle disappeared.

That rainbow gave me much to consider—how God has no beginning or end, and that He reveals His promises to us no matter where we are. Our never-ending, eternal God “set [His] rainbow in the clouds” (GENESIS 9:13) as a promise to never flood the earth again “to destroy all life” (V. 15). Even today, our Creator shares His reminder of that promise with us, His creation (VV. 13-16).

Isaiah 40:28 says, “The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. . . . No one can measure the depths of his understanding” (nlt). What an amazing thought! We will have eternity to learn about our promise keeper, and we’ll never reach the ultimate depth of His understanding.
