하나님이 생각나게 해주시는 것들
내 친구 밥 호너는 예수님을 “생각나게 해주시는 데 전문가”라고 말합니다. 이것은 우리가 의심도 많고 잊어버리기도 잘하기 때문에 참 다행한 일입니다. 예수님이 이 땅에 계실 때 주님께로 온 사람들의 필요를 그처럼 많이 충족시켜주셨는데도 불구하고, 초기의 제자들은 그들이 가난에 처하지는 않을까 두려워했습니다. 그들은 기적들을 목격했으면서도 주님이 그들에게 기억하기를 원하는 더 큰 의미를 이해하지 못했습니다.
갈릴리 바다를 건너가는 도중에 제자들은 떡 가져오는 것을 잊은 것을 알고는 걱정하며 수군거리고 있었습니다. 그때 예수님은 제자들에게 “아직도 알지 못하며 깨닫지 못하느냐 너희 마음이 둔하냐 너희가 눈이 있어도 보지 못하며 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하느냐 또 기억하지 못하느냐”(마가복음 8:17-18)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러고 나서 주님이 떡 다섯 개로 오천 명을 먹이셨을 때 제자들이 남은 조각을 열두 바구니 거두었던 것과, 일곱 개의 떡으로 사천 명을 먹이셨을 때 남은 것을 일곱 광주리 거두었던 사실을 상기시켜주셨습니다. 그러고 나서 주님은 제자들에게 “아직도 깨닫지 못하느냐”(21절)고 말씀하셨습니다.
주님이 사람들의 육신의 필요를 기적적인 방법으로 공급해주신 그 일은, 주님이 생명의 떡이요 주님의 몸이 그들과 우리를 위해 “찢기실” 것이라는 더 큰 진리를 보여준 것이었습니다.
성찬식 때 떡을 떼고 잔을 마실 때마다 우리는 우리 주님의 크신 사랑과 베푸심을 떠올리게 됩니다.

God’s Reminders
My friend Bob Horner refers to Jesus as “the Master Reminder.” And that is good, because we are so doubting and forgetful. No matter how often Jesus met the needs of the people who came to Him when He was here on earth, His first disciples feared they would somehow be left in need. After witnessing miracles, they failed to understand the greater meaning the Lord wanted them to remember.
On a journey across the Sea of Galilee, the disciples realized they had forgotten to bring bread and were talking about it. Jesus asked them, “Do you
still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember?” (MARK 8:17–18). Then He reminded them that when He fed five thousand people with five loaves, the disciples had collected twelve basketfuls of leftover pieces. And when He fed four thousand with seven loaves, they filled seven baskets with leftovers. Then “He said to them, ‘Do you still not understand?’” (V. 21).
The Lord’s miraculous provision for people’s physical needs pointed to the greater truth—that He was the Bread of Life and that His body would be “broken” for them and for us.
Every time we eat the bread and drink the cup during the Lord’s Supper, we are reminded of our Lord’s great love and provision for us. - DAVID MCCASLAND

붙잡으라
중국 장가계에 위치하고 있는 천문산은 세계에서 가장 아름다운 산 중의 하나로 여겨집니다. 그 장엄하고 화려한 모습의 높고 우뚝 솟은 절벽을 보려면 7,455미터(4.5마일) 거리를 운행하는 천문산 케이블카를 타야 합니다. 케이블카 자체에 모터가 없이 그처럼 장거리를 운행하면서 가파른 산을 오른다는 것은 정말 놀라운 일입니다. 하지만 케이블카는 강력한 모터에 의해 움직이는 케이블에 단단히 매달려 있어 이 같은 환상적인 높이까지 안전하게 운행하고 있습니다.
믿음의 여정에서 우리는 어떻게 경주를 잘 마치고, “푯대를 향하여 그리스도 안에서 하나님이 위에서 부르신 부름의 상을 위하여 달려갈”(빌립보서 3:14) 수 있을까요? 우리도 케이블카처럼 그리스도를 단단히 붙잡아야 합니다. 바울이 “주님 안에 굳건히 서 계십시오”(4:1, 새번역)라고 말한 것도 바로 그런 의미입니다. 우리 자신에게는 아무런 수단도 없습니다. 계속 앞으로 나아가기 위해서 우리는 그리스도를 온전히 의지해야 합니다. 주님은 우리를 커다란 시련들을 지나 안전하게 본향으로 인도하실 것입니다.

The Bible in One Year: ISAIAH 11–13 and EPHESIANS 4

Hold On
Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, China, is considered one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. To view its towering cliffs in all their glorious splendor, you must take the Tianmen Shan cable car, which covers a distance of 7,455 meters (4.5 miles). It’s amazing how this cable car can travel such long distances and scale such steep mountains without any motor on the car itself. Yet it moves safely up these spectacular heights by keeping a strong grip on a cable that is moved by a powerful motor.
In our journey of faith, how can we finish the race well and “press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called [us] heavenward in Christ Jesus”? (PHIL. 3:14). Like the cable car, we keep a strong grip on Christ, which is what Paul meant when he said “stand firm in the Lord” (4:1). We have no resources of our own. We depend fully on Christ to keep us moving forward. He will take us through the greatest challenges and lead us safely home.
Toward the end of his earthly life, the apostle Paul declared, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 TIM. 4:7). You can too. Simply keep a strong grip on Christ. - ALBERT LEE

틀린 믿음, 바른 믿음
“믿음을 가져야 한다”고 사람들이 말하는데, 이 말의 뜻이 무엇일까요? 아무 믿음이나 다 바른 믿음일까요? 1세기 전 어느 긍정적인 사람이 이런 글을 썼습니다. “당신 자신을 믿으십시오. 당신 안에는 어떤 장애물도 능가하는 더 큰것이있습니다.” 이말은듣기에는 좋은 말일지는몰라도 전혀 현실적이지 않습니다. 우리에게는 우리 자신보다 더 큰 어떤 것에 대한 믿음이 필요합니다.
하나님은 아브람에게 많은 후손을 주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다(창세기15:4-5). 그러나 그러기에는 큰 장애물이 그를 가로막고 있었는데, 그는 이미 늙었고 아직 자녀가 없었습니다. 아브람과 사라는 하나님의 약속이 성취되는 것을 기다리다 지쳐서 자신들이 직접 그 장애를 해결하려 했습니다. 그 결과, 가족 관계가 무너지고 원치 않았던 많은 불화가 초래되었습니다(창세기 16장; 21:8-21 참조).

Bad Faith, Good Faith
“You gotta have faith,” people say. But what does that mean? Is any faith good faith? “Believe in yourself and all that you are,” wrote one positive thinker a century ago. “Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.” As nice as that may sound, it falls to pieces when it crashes into reality. We need a faith in something bigger than ourselves.
God promised Abram he would have a multitude of descendants (GEN. 15:4–5), so he faced a huge obstacle—he was old and childless. When he and Sarah got tired of waiting for God to make good on His promise, they tried to overcome that obstacle on their own. As a result, they fractured their family and created a lot of unnecessary dissension (see GEN. 16 and 21:8–21).
Nothing Abraham did in his own strength worked. But ultimately he became known as a man of tremendous faith. Paul wrote of him, “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be’” (ROM. 4:18). This faith, said Paul, “was credited to him as righteousness” (V. 22).
Abraham’s faith was in something far bigger than himself—the one and only God. It’s the object of our faith that makes all the difference.
[Abraham] did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God.

돌을 던지면 닿을 만큼 가까이
종교지도자들이 무리를 지어 간음한 여인을 예수님께로 끌고 왔을 때, 그들은 그들이 그 여자를 예수님의 은혜에 돌을 던지면 닿을 듯 가까이 데려가고 있음을 알지 못했습니다. 그들은 예수님을 곤경에 빠트리고 싶어 했습니다. 만약 예수님이 그 여자를 보내주라고 한다면 그들은 예수님이 모세의 율법을 어긴다고 주장할 수 있었고, 또 만약 예수님이 여자를 죽이라고 한다면 그를 따르는 군중들이 예수님의 자비와 은혜의 말씀을 저버릴 것이었습니다.

오늘 당신이 다른 사람들을 비판한 것을 용서받아야 한다든지, 또는 하나님의 은혜로 용서 받지 못할 죄가 없다는 것에 대한 확신이 필요하다면, 다음의 말에 용기를 얻으십시오. ‘아무도 돌을 던지지 않으니 지금 가서 하나님의 자비로 변화되어라.’

Within a Stone's Throw
As a group of religious leaders herded an adulterous woman toward Jesus, they couldn’t know they were carrying her within a stone’s throw of grace. Their hope was to dis- credit Him. If He told them to let the woman go, they could claim He was breaking Mosaic law. But if He condemned
her to death, the crowds following Him would have dismissed His words of mercy and grace.
But Jesus turned the tables on the accusers. Scripture says that rather than answering them directly, He started writing on the ground. When the leaders continued to question Him, He invited any of them who had never sinned to throw the first stone, and then He started writing on the ground again. The next time He looked up, all the accusers were gone.
Now the only person who could have thrown a stone—the only sinless one—looked at the woman and gave her mercy. “ ‘Then neither do I condemn you,’ Jesus declared. ‘Go now and leave your life of sin’” (JOHN 8:11).
Whether today finds you needing forgiveness for judging others or desiring assurance that no sin is beyond His grace, be encouraged by this: No one is throwing stones today; go and be changed by God’s mercy. - RANDY KILGORE

오늘 당신을 위해 기도하고 있습니다
난처한상황이나어려운문제에직면할때우리는자주주위에있는 예수 그리스도 안의 형제자매들에게 기도요청을 합니다. 우리를 생각해주는 누군가가 기도로 우리를 하나님께 올려준다는 것을 아는 건 큰 위로가 됩니다. 하지만 만일 당신에게 그런 가까운 그리스도인 친구들이 없다면 어떨까요? 만일 당신이 예수 그리스도의 복음이 거부당하는 곳에 살고 있다면 누가 당신을 위해 기도해 줄까요?

성경은 또 말합니다. “누가 정죄하리요 죽으실 뿐 아니라 다시 살아나신 이는 그리스도 예수시니 그는 하나님 우편에 계신 자요 우리를 위하여 간구하시는 자시니라”(34절). 살아 계신 주 예수 그리스도께서 오늘 당신을 위해 기도하고 계십니다.

Praying For You Today
When we face a perplexing situation or a tough problem, we often ask our brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for us. It’s a great encouragement to know that others who care are holding us up to God in prayer. But what if you don’t have close Christian friends? Perhaps you live where the gospel of Christ is opposed. Who will pray for you?

친구 아버지의 추모예배에서 누군가가 친구에게 말했습니다. “당신의 아버지를 만나기 전까지 나는 사람이 다른 이들을 도우면서 즐거움을 느낄 수 있다는 것을 알지 못했습니다.” 그 친구의 아버지는 다른 사람들을 돕고, 웃고, 사랑하며, 모르는 사람들과 만나 친구가 되는 일들을 통해 하나님의 나라를 세워나가는데 한 부분을 담당했습니다. 친구 아버지는 돌아가시며 사랑의 유산을 남겼습니다. 그와는 반대로 내 친구의 큰고모는 그녀의 재산을 유산이라 여기고, 인생의 마지막 몇 년을 자신의 가보와 고서들을 누가 지켜낼 수 있을까를 고민하며 보냈습니다.

True Riches
At the memorial service for my friend’s dad, someone said to her, “Until I met your father, I didn’t know a person could have fun while helping others.” Her dad contributed his part in helping to build the kingdom of God through serving people, laughing and loving, and meeting strangers who became friends. When he died, he left a legacy of love. In contrast, my friend’s aunt—her father’s older sister—viewed her possessions as her legacy, spending her latter years worrying about who would protect her heirlooms and rare books.
In His teaching and by His example, Jesus warned His followers to avoid hoarding possessions, to give to the poor, and to value what will not rust or decay. “For where your treasure is,” Jesus said, “there your heart will be also” (LUKE 12:34).
We might think our things give meaning to our life. But when the latest gadget breaks or we misplace or lose some- thing valuable, we begin to realize that it is our relationship with the Lord that satisfies and endures. It is our love and care for others that does not wither and fade away.

‘주님이 네 곁에 계시니 내 영혼아 늘 평안하여라. 인내로 슬픔과 고통의 십자가를 견디어라. 네 하나님이 명하시고 채우시게 하라. 모든 것이 변해도 신실하신 하나님은 변치 않으시리라.’

Calming Your Soul
While attending a concert, my mind detoured to a troublesome issue that insisted on my attention. Thankfully, the distraction was short-lived as the words of a beautiful hymn began to reach deep into my being. A men’s a capella group was singing “Be Still, My Soul.” Tears welled up as I listened to the words and contemplated the restful peace that only God can give:
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side! Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain; leave to thy God to order and provide; in every change He faithful will remain.
When Jesus was denouncing the unrepentant towns where He had done most of His miracles (MATT. 11:20–24), He still had words of comfort for those who would come to Him. He said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened . . . . learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (VV. 28–29).
This statement is striking! Immediately following His strong words for those who were rejecting Him, Jesus extended an invitation to all to draw near to Him to find the peace we all yearn for. Jesus is the only one who can calm our restless, weary souls. - JOE STOWELL

Words That Matter
Early in my days of working as an editor for Our Daily Bread, I selected the cover verse for each month’s devotional. After a while, I began to wonder if it made a difference.
Not long after that, a reader wrote and described how she had prayed for her son for more than twenty years, yet he wanted nothing to do with Jesus. Then one day he stopped by to visit her, and he read the verse on the cover of the booklet that sat on her table. The Spirit used those words to convict him, and he gave his life to Jesus at that very moment.
I don’t recall the verse or the woman’s name. But I’ll never forget the clarity of God’s message to me that day. He had chosen to answer a woman’s prayers through a verse selected nearly a year earlier. From a place beyond time, He brought the wonder of His presence to my work and His words.
John the disciple called Jesus “the Word of life” (1 JOHN 1:1). He wanted everyone to know what that meant. “We proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us,” he wrote of Jesus (V. 2). “We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us” (V. 3).
There is nothing magical in putting words on a page. But there is life-changing power in the words of Scripture because they point us to the Word of life—Jesus. - TIM GUSTAFSON

믿음을 전수하라
나는 릴레이 경주를 즐겨 봅니다. 운동선수들이 보여주는 체력, 속도, 기술, 지구력은 정말 대단합니다. 그런데, 특별히 관심을 갖고 불안한 마음으로 경주를 지켜보는 결정적인 순간이 있습니다. 그것은 바로 배턴이 다음 주자에게 넘겨지는 순간입니다. 잠깐 지체되거나 한 번이라도 놓치게 되면 경주에서 질 수 있기 때문입니다.

모세도 이스라엘 백성들에게 비슷한 이야기를 했습니다. “네가 눈으로 본 그 일을 잊어버리지 말라 네가 생존하는 날 동안에 그 일들이 네 마음에서 떠나지 않도록 조심하라 너는 그 일들을 네 아들들과 네
손자들에게 알게 하라”(신명기 4:9).
다가올 세대를 위해 우리가 받은 소명은, “[우리를] 어두운데서 불러내어 그의 기이한 빛에 들어가게 하신 이의 아름다운 덕을” (베드로전서 2:9) 전해주기 위해, 사랑과 용기를 가지고 우리가 할 수 있는
무엇이든 하는 것입니다.

Pass It On
I enjoy watching relay races. The physical strength, speed, skill, and endurance required of the athletes amaze me. But one crucial point of the race always gets my special attention and makes me anxious. It is the moment the baton is passed to the next athlete. One moment of delay, one slip, and the race could be lost.
In a sense, Christians are in a relay race, carrying the baton of faith and the knowledge of the Lord and of His Word. And the Bible tells us about our need to pass this baton from one generation to another. In Psalm 78, Asaph declares: “I will utter . . . things from of old—things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us . . . . We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done” (VV. 2–4).
Moses said something similar to the Israelites: “Do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them” (DEUT. 4:9).
For generations to come, we are called to lovingly and courageously do whatever we can to pass along “the praises of him who called [us] out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 PETER 2:9). - LAWRENCE DARMANI

아버지가 세상을 떠난 지 며칠 지나지 않아, 서른 살의 씨 에스 루이스는 20여 년 전에 병으로 돌아가신 어머니를 돌보았던 여성으로부터 편지를 받았습니다. 그녀는 아버지를 잃은 슬픔에 위로의 말을 전하며, 혹시 자기를 기억하는지 궁금해 했습니다. 루이스는 답장에 이렇게 썼습니다. “친애하는 데이비슨 간호사님, 기억하냐고요? 물론 기억하지요.”

Words for the Weary
A few days after his father died, 30-year-old C. S. Lewis received a letter from a woman who had cared for his mother during her illness and death more than two decades earlier. The woman offered her sympathy for his loss and wondered if he remembered her. “My dear Nurse Davison,” Lewis replied. “Remember you? I should think I do.”
Lewis recalled how much her presence in their home had meant to him as well as to his brother and father during a difficult time. He thanked her for her words of sympathy and said, “It is really comforting to be taken back to those old days. The time during which you were with my mother seemed very long to a child and you became part of home.”
When we struggle in the circumstances of life, an encouraging word from others can lift our spirits and our eyes to the Lord. The Old Testament prophet Isaiah wrote, “The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary” (50:4). And when we look to the Lord, He offers words of hope and light in the darkness. - DAVID MCCASLAND
