헤아릴 수 없는 자비

친구 둘이서 휴대용 컴퓨터를 사려고 전자제품 매장에 갔다가 농구 스타 샤킬 오닐과 마주쳤습니다. 오닐의 팬인 두 친구는 최근 그가 여동생과 예전 같은 팀 동료를 잃었다는 사실을 알고 오닐에게 따뜻한 위로를 전하고는, 돌아서서 쇼핑을 계속했습니다. 그때 샤킬이 그들에게 다가가 갖고 싶은 최고의 컴퓨터를 고르라고 말하고는 그들에게 그것을 사주었습니다. 그가 그렇게 한 이유는 그들이 단순히 그를 힘든 시기를 지내고 있는 한 사람으로 보고 친절을 베풀어줘 감동했기 때문이었습니다.

그 일이 있기 수천 년 전에 솔로몬은 “인자한 자는 자기의 영혼을 이롭게 한다”(잠언 11:17)고 썼습니다. 우리가 다른 사람의 필요를 생각해 돕고 격려할 수 있는 일을 한다면, 우리는 스스로 보상받습니다. 컴퓨터나 물질적인 것은 아니더라도 하나님은 이 세상이 헤아릴 수 없는 방법으로 우리를 축복하십니다. 솔로몬은 같은 장의 바로 앞 절에서 이렇게 설명합니다. “상냥하고 친절한 여자는 존경을 받고 억척스런 남자는 재물을 얻는다”(16절, 현대인의 성경). 돈보다 훨씬 가치 있는 하나님의 선물들이 있으며, 하나님은 그분의 온전한 지혜와 방법으로 그것들을 너그럽게 측정하십니다.

하나님은 그분 성품의 일부인 자비와 관용이 우리의 마음과 삶에서 표현되는 것을 보기 원하십니다. 솔로몬은 그 부분을 이렇게 잘 요약했습니다. “남을 윤택하게 하는 자는 자기도 윤택하여지리라”(25절).

UNMEASURED KINDNESS

Two friends were shopping for a laptop in an electronics store when they ran into basketball great Shaquille O’Neal. Aware that O’Neal recently suffered the loss of his sister and a former teammate, they empathetically offered their condolences. After the two men returned to their shopping, Shaq approached them and told them to pick out the nicest laptop they could find. He then bought it for them, simply because they saw him as a person going through a difficult time and was moved by their kindness.

Millennia before that encounter, Solomon wrote, “Those who are kind benefit themselves” (PROVERBS 11:17). When we consider others’ needs and do what we can to help and encourage them, we’re rewarded ourselves. It may not be with a laptop or material things, but God has ways of blessing us that this world can’t measure. As Solomon explained just one verse earlier in the same chapter, “A kindhearted woman gains honor, but ruthless men gain only wealth” (V. 16). There are gifts from God that are worth far more than money, and He measures them generously in His perfect wisdom and way.

Kindness and generosity are part of God’s character, and He loves to see them expressed in our own hearts and lives. Solomon summed up the matter well: “Whoever refreshes others will be refreshed” (V. 25).

한 줌의 쌀

인도 북동부 미조람 주는 이제 천천히 빈곤에서 벗어나고 있습니다. 이 지역에 복음이 처음 전해진 이후 예수님을 믿는 신자들은 비록 수입이 적더라도 지역 전통이 되어 버린 ‘한 줌의 쌀’ 운동을 계속 실천해 오고 있습니다. 식사를 준비하는 사람들이 매일 생쌀 한 줌씩 떼어 둔 것을 교회에 갖다 주는 것입니다. 미조람의 교회들은 세상 기준으로 보면 아직 가난하지만, 수백 만 달러를 선교에 쓰면서 전 세계에 선교사를 파송하고 있습니다. 지금까지 미조람 주의 많은 사람들이 그리스도에게로 돌아왔습니다.

고린도후서 8장에서 바울은 이와 비슷한 상황에 놓여 있는 한 교회를 소개합니다. 마케도니아의 신자들은 가난했지만 그것 때문에 기쁜 마음으로 넘치게 베푸는 것을 멈추지 않았습니다(1-2절). 그들은 자신들이 베푸는 것을 특권으로 여겼고, 바울과 동역하기 위해 그들의 “힘에 지나도록”(3절) 주었습니다. 그들은 자신들이 단지 하나님의 자원을 관리하는 청지기라는 사실을 잘 알고 있었습니다. 그래서 그들에게 베풂이란 우리의 모든 필요를 공급하시는 주님에 대한 믿음을 보여주는 한 방법이었습니다.

A HANDFUL OF RICE

The state of Mizoram in northeast India is slowly climbing out of poverty. Despite their lack of income, since the gospel first came to this area, believers in Jesus have practiced a local tradition called “handful of rice.” Those preparing meals each day set aside a handful of uncooked rice and give it to the church. Mizoram churches, poor by the world’s standard, have given millions to missions and sent missionaries around the world. Many in their home state have come to Christ.

In 2 Corinthians 8, Paul describes a similarly challenged church. Believers in Macedonia were poor, but that didn’t keep them from giving joyfully and abundantly (VV. 1-2). They saw their giving as a privilege and gave “even beyond their ability” (V. 3) to partner with Paul. They understood they were merely stewards of God’s resources. Giving was a way to show their trust in Him, who provides for all our needs.

Paul used the Macedonians to encourage the Corinthians to have the same approach to giving. The Corinthians excelled “in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in . . . love.” Now they needed to “excel in this grace of giving” (V. 7).

Like the Macedonians and the believers in Mizoram, we too can reflect our Father’s generosity by giving generously out of what we have.

원수 사랑

제2차 세계대전 당시 미 해군 의무병 린 웨스턴은 적이 점령한 섬들을 해병대가 기습 공격할 때 그들과 함께 해안에 상륙했습니다. 당연히 끔찍한 사상자들이 발생했습니다. 그는 다친 아군들을 후송하기 위해 최선을 다해 응급처치했습니다. 한번은 그의 부대가 복부에 심한 상처를 입은 적군을 만났습니다. 부상의 상태 때문에 그 군인에게 물을 줄 수 없어서 웨스턴 하사관은 그의 생명을 유지시키려고 정맥 혈장을 투여했습니다.

“이봐, 우리 병사들을 위해 혈장을 아껴둬!” 해병대원 중 한 명이 소리 쳤지만, 웨스턴 하사관은 그의 말을 무시했습니다. 예수님이라면 어떻게 하실지 알고 있었기 때문입니다. “너희 원수를 사랑하라”(마태복음 5:44).

예수님은 그런 도전이 되는 말들을 하시는 것보다 훨씬 더 많이 행동으로 옮기셨습니다. 주님은 그분의 말씀대로 사셨습니다. 적의에 찬 폭도들이 주님을 붙잡아 대제사장에게 끌고 갔을 때, “지키는 사람들이 예수를 희롱하고 때리기 시작했습니다”(누가복음 22:63). 그런 학대는 주님에 대한 엉터리 재판과 주님의 죽음에 이르기까지 내내 계속되었습니다. 그런데 예수님은 단지 그 고난을 견디기만 하신 것이 아니었습니다. 로마 군인들이 주님을 십자가에 못 박았을 때 ‘주님은 그들을 용서해 달라고 기도하셨습니다’(23:34).

우리는 실제로 우리를 죽이려는 적을 안 만날지도 모릅니다. 하지만 조롱과 경멸을 견딘다는 것이 어떤 것인지는 누구나 압니다. 조롱과 경멸에는 화를 내는 것이 우리의 자연스러운 반응입니다. 하지만 예수님은 “너희를 박해하는 자들을 위하여 기도하라”(마태복음 5:44)고 하시며 한 단계 높은 모습을 보여주셨습니다.

오늘, 예수님이 하신 것처럼 우리의 원수들에게까지도 자비를 베푸는 ‘그런’ 사랑을 가지고 걸어갑시다.

LOVING OUR ENEMY

During World War II, US Navy medical corpsman Lynne Weston went ashore with the marines as they stormed enemy-held islands. Inevitably, there were gruesome casualties. He did his best to patch up wounded combatants for evacuation. On one occasion, his unit encountered an enemy soldier with a bad abdominal wound. Due to the nature of the injury, the man couldn’t be given water. To keep him alive, Petty Officer Weston administered intravenous plasma.

“Save that plasma for our fellas, Swabby!” bellowed one of the marines. Petty Officer Weston ignored him. He knew what Jesus would do: “love your enemies” (MATTHEW 5:44).

Jesus did far more than speak those challenging words; He lived them. When a hostile mob seized Him and took Him to the high priest, “the men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him” (LUKE 22:63). The abuse continued all the way through His sham trials and execution. Jesus didn’t merely endure it. When Roman soldiers crucified Him, He prayed for their forgiveness (23:34).

We may not encounter a literal enemy who’s trying to kill us. But everyone knows what it’s like to endure ridicule and scorn. Our natural reaction is to respond in anger. Jesus raised the bar: “pray for those who persecute you” (MATTHEW 5:44).

Today, let’s walk in that kind of love, showing kindness as Jesus did—even to our enemies.

우리를 살피시는 하나님

“어서 내려와!” 내 친구가 교회 의자에 기어 올라가 손을 흔드는 자기 아들을 향해 단호하게 말했습니다. 아이가 순진하게 대꾸합니다. “목사님이 나를 봤으면 좋겠어요. 일어서지 않으면 목사님이 나를 못 볼 거예요.”

교회 의자에 올라서는 것을 장려하는 교회는 거의 없겠지만, 친구 아들의 행동에는 합당한 이유가 있었습니다. 일어서서 손을 흔드는 것은 목사님의 눈에 띄고 관심을 끌 수 있는 확실한 한 가지 방법이었던 것입니다.

우리가 하나님의 관심을 끌고 싶을 때 하나님이 우리를 못 보시는 것은 아닐까 걱정할 필요가 없습니다. 하나님은 언제나 우리 한 사람 한 사람을 살피고 계십니다. 그런 하나님이 하갈이 인생에서 아마 가장 낮고 외롭고 절망적일 때 그에게 하나님 자신을 나타내셨습니다. 하갈은 아브람의 아내 사래가 아브람에게 아이를 낳아 주도록 주었던 보잘것없는 종이었습니다 (창세기 16:3). 그리고 하갈이 임신했을 때, 아브람은 사래가 하갈을 학대하게 내버려두었습니다. “사래가 하갈을 학대하였더니 하갈이 사래 앞에서 도망하였더라”(6절).

도망친 여종은 홀로 되고 임신 중인 자신이 비참해 보였습니다. 그러나 황무지에서 절망 가운데 있을 때 하나님이 그를 불쌍히 여겨 천사를 보내셨습니다. 천사는 하나님이 “[그의] 고통을 들으셨다”(11절)고 말했습니다. 그 말에 하갈은 “나를 살피시는 하나님”(13절)이라고 반응합니다.

얼마나 놀라운 깨달음입니까? 특히 황무지 가운데에서 말입니다. 하나님은 하갈을 살피셨고 긍휼을 보이셨습니다. 하나님은 우리가 어떤 힘든 일을 겪든지 우리를 살피고 계십니다.

GOD SEES YOU

“Get down!” my friend said firmly to her son after he climbed onto the church pew and waved his hands. “I want the pastor to see me,” he innocently replied. “If I don’t stand up, he won’t see me.”

While standing on the pews is probably not encouraged in most churches, my friend’s son had a good point. Standing and waving his hands was certainly one way to be seen and to capture the pastor’s attention.

When we’re trying to get God’s attention, we don’t have to worry about being seen by Him. God sees each of us all the time. He’s the same One who revealed Himself to Hagar when she was probably at the lowest, loneliest, most frustrating time in her life. She’d been used as a pawn and given to Abram by his wife, Sarai, to produce a son (GENESIS 16:3). And when she did get pregnant, Abram allowed his wife to mistreat Hagar: “Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her” (V. 6).

The runaway slave found herself alone, pregnant, and miserable. Yet in the midst of her desperation in the wilderness, God compassionately sent an angel to speak to her. The angel told her that God had “heard of [her] misery” (V. 11). She responded by saying, “You are the God who sees me” (V. 13).

What a realization—especially in the midst of the wilderness. God saw Hagar and had compassion. And no matter how tough things are, He sees you.

사랑으로 섬기기

크리스털이 버지니아의 한 커피숍에서 처음 일을 시작했을 때 아이비라는 손님을 만났습니다. 청각 장애가 있는 그는 자기 휴대전화에 문자를 적어 주문했습니다. 그 후 아이비가 단골임을 알게 된 크리스털은 그가 주문할 때 문자를 적지 않아도 될 만큼 수화를 배워 그에게 좀더 편한 서비스를 제공해줘야겠다고 결심했습니다.

크리스털은 이 간단한 방법으로 아이비에게 베드로가 우리 모두에게 서로 하라고 권한 사랑과 봉사의 모습을 보여주었습니다. 베드로는 쫓겨나 흩어진 그리스도인들에게 쓴 편지에서 “서로 깊이 사랑”하고 각자가 받은 은사를 “서로 봉사”하는 데 사용해야 한다고 말합니다(베드로전서 4:8, 10). 주님이 우리에게 주신 어떤 기술이나 능력은 우리가 다른 사람을 위해 사용할 수 있는 은사입니다. 우리가 그렇게 할 때, 우리의 말과 행동은 하나님을 영화롭게 할 수 있습니다.

고통 가운데 고립되어 있는 편지 수신자들에게 베드로의 말은 특히 중요한 의미가 있었습니다. 베드로는 그들이 시련을 꿋꿋이 견디도록 돕기 위해 고통 중에도 서로를 섬기라고 격려했습니다. 다른 사람이 겪는 특별한 고통을 잘 모를 수도 있지만, 하나님은 우리가 그들과 공감하며 우리의 말과 자원, 능력으로 자애롭고 기쁜 마음으로 섬길 수 있도록 도와주십니다. 하나님, 우리가 다른 사람들을 섬김으로 하나님의 사랑을 나타낼 수 있도록 도와주소서.

SERVING WITH LOVE

When Krystal first started work at a Virginia coffee shop, she served a customer named Ibby. Because Ibby is hearing impaired, he placed his order using a typed note on his phone. After Krystal learned Ibby was a regular customer, she determined to serve him better by learning enough American Sign Language so he could place his order without writing it down.

In a small way, Krystal showed Ibby the kind of love and service Peter encourages us all to offer one another. In his letter to believers in Jesus who’d been scattered and exiled, the apostle indicates that they ought to “love each other deeply” and use their gifts “to serve others” (1 PETER 4:8, 10). Whatever skills and abilities He’s equipped us with are gifts we can use to benefit others. As we do, our words and actions can bring honor to God.

Peter’s words were especially important to those he wrote to, for they were experiencing a season of pain and isolation. He encouraged them to serve one another during the time of distress to help them bear up under their trials. Though we may not know the specific pain another person experiences, God can help us to show empathy as well as graciously and cheerfully serve one another with our words, resources, and abilities. May God help us serve others as a reflection of His love.

하나님의 때

외국 여행을 계획하고 그것을 고대하고 있던 매기는 평소 하던 대로 먼저 그 여행을 놓고 기도했습니다. 한 친구가 “그냥 휴가일 뿐인데 왜 하나님과 상의해야 해?”라고 말했습니다. 그러나 매그는 모든 일을 하나님께 맡겨야 한다고 믿었습니다. 이번에 매기는 하나님이 여행을 취소하기를 원하신다는 느낌이 들어 결국 여행을 취소했습니다. 나중에 보니 계획했던 여행 기간 동안 그 나라에 전염병이 돌았습니다. 매그는 “하나님이 나를 보호해 주셨던 것 같아요.”라고 고백합니다.

노아 역시 홍수가 빠지고 거의 두 달 동안 가족과 함께 방주에서 기다릴 때 하나님의 보호하심에 의지했습니다. 열 달이 넘게 갇혀 있었던 그는 나가고 싶은 마음이 간절했을 것입니다. 마침내 “땅 위에서 물이 걷히고 땅이 말랐습니다” (창세기 8:13). 그러나 노아는 자신이 보는 것에 의지하지 않았고, 하나님이 지시하시고 나서야 방주를 떠났습니다(15-19절). 하나님이 오래 기다리게 하신 데에는 충분한 이유가 있다고 믿었기 때문입니다. 어쩌면 땅이 아직 완전히 안전하지 않았을 수도 있었습니다.

우리가 하나님이 주신 능력을 사용하고 그분의 인도하심을 기다리면서 우리 삶 속의 여러 결정을 앞두고 하나님께 기도할 때, 지혜로운 창조주께서 우리에게 가장 좋은 것이 무엇인지 아시기에 우리는 그분의 때를 믿고 따를 수 있습니다. 시편 기자가 “여호와여 나는 주께 의지하고... 나의 앞날이 주의 손에 있습니다”(시편 31:14-15)라고 선언한 것처럼 말입니다.

GOD’S TIMING

Mag had been looking forward to her planned trip to another country. But, as was her usual practice, she prayed about it first. “It’s just a holiday,” a friend remarked. “Why do you need to consult God?” Mag, however, believed in committing everything to Him. This time, she felt Him prompting her to cancel the trip. She did, and later—when she would have been there—an epidemic broke out in the country. “I feel like God was protecting me,” she notes.

Noah too relied on God’s protection as he and his family waited in the ark for nearly two months after the flood subsided. After being cooped up for more than ten months, he must have been eager to get out. After all, “the water had dried up from the earth” and “the ground was dry” (GENESIS 8:13). But Noah didn’t just rely on what he saw; instead, he left the ark only when God told him to (VV.15-19). He trusted that God had good reason for the extended wait—perhaps the ground wasn’t completely safe yet.

As we pray about the decisions in our life, using our God-given faculties and waiting for His leading, we can trust in His timing, knowing that our wise Creator knows what is best for us. As the psalmist declared, “I trust in you, Lord . . . . My times are in your hands” (PSALM 31:14-15).

남의 일

손주 넷이 기차 장난감을 가지고 놀고 있었는데, 가장 어린 두 아이가 서로 자기가 기차 운전을 하겠다고 다투고 있었습니다. 여덟 살 된 손자가 끼어들려고 하자, 여섯 살 난 여동생이 “남의 일에 상관하지 마”라고 말했습니다. 보통은 그 말이 우리 모두에게 있어 지혜로운 말이지만, 아이들이 다투다 울기 시작하자 할머니가 끼어들어 싸우는 아이들을 말리고 위로해주었습니다.

남의 일에 관여함으로 상황이 더 나빠질 수 있다면 관여하지 않는 것이 좋습니다. 그러나 때때로 우리는 기도하는 마음으로 관여해야 할 때가 있습니다. 바울 사도는 빌립보 사람들에게 보낸 편지에서 언제 관여할 지 한 가지 예를 보여줍니다. 바울은 두 여인 유오디아와 순두게에게 “주 안에서 같은 마음을 품으라”(4:2)고 권면합니다. 그들의 의견 차이가 너무 심해지자, 사도는 감옥에 갇혀 있음에도 불구하고(1:7) 개입하지 않을 수 없다고 느꼈던 것입니다(3절).

OTHER PEOPLE’S BUSINESS

Four of our grandkids were playing with a miniature train set, and the younger two were arguing over an engine. When our eight-year-old grandson began to intervene, his six-year-old sister stated, “Don’t worry about their business.” Wise words for us all—usually. But when the argument turned to tears, Grandma stepped in, separated, and comforted the squabbling children.

It’s good to stay out of others’ business when doing so could make matters worse. But sometimes we need to prayerfully get involved. In his letter to the Philippians, the apostle Paul provides an example of when to do so. Here he urges two women, Euodia and Syntyche, “to be of the same mind in the Lord” (4:2). Apparently, their disagreement had become so intense that the apostle felt compelled to intervene (V. 3), even though he was imprisoned (1:7).

Paul knew the women’s argument was causing disunity and taking focus away from the gospel. So, he gently spoke the truth while reminding them that their names were written “in the book of life” (4:3). Paul wanted these women and everyone in the church to live as God’s people in thought and actions (VV. 4-9).

When you’re unsure if you should get involved, pray, trusting that “the God of peace will be with you” (V. 9; SEE V. 7).

진실에 가까워도 여전히 거짓은 거짓

아주 잘 촬영되었고, 음악도 잔잔히 영상과 잘 어울렸습니다. 내용 또한 흥미롭고 공감이 갔습니다. 붉은 삼나무에 아드레날린 유사 물질을 주입하여 나무가 휴면기에 접어드는 것을 막는 연구를 보여준 그 영상에서, 약물이 주입된 나무들은 “겨울나기”라는 자연적인 순환 과정을 갖지 못해 죽고 말았습니다.

그 영상이 전하고자 한 것은 휴식 없이 항상 바쁘게 산다면 우리에게도 그런 일이 일어날 수 있다는 것이었습니다. 그리고 그것은 사실일 수 있습니다. 그러나 그 영상에는 오류가 있었습니다. 실제로 그런 연구는 전혀 행해지지 않았습니다. 붉은 삼나무는 상록수이기 때문에 결코 휴면기를 갖지 않기 때문입니다. 그리고 영상 속의 나무들은 거대한 세쿼이아였으며 해안에서 자라는 붉은 삼나무가 아니었습니다. 그 영상은 아주 사려 깊은 것 같이 보였지만 거짓에 바탕을 둔 것이었습니다.

우리는 과학기술의 발달로 인해 거짓이 과장되고 부풀려져 마치 진실인 양 우리를 설득하기까지 하는 시대에 살고 있습니다. 경건한 지혜의 집약체라 할 수 있는 잠언서는 진실과 거짓 사이의 극명한 차이에 대해 자주 말합니다. “진실한 입술은 영원히 보존되거니와 거짓 혀는 잠시 동안만 있을 뿐이니라”(12:19). 그리고 바로 이어 “악을 꾀하는 자의 마음에는 속임이 있고 화평을 의논하는 자에게는 희락이 있느니라”(20절)고 말합니다.

정직은 하나님의 명령에서부터 겨울나기 영상에 이르기까지 모든 것에 적용됩니다. 진실은 “영원히 보존”됩니다.

ALMOST TRUE IS STILL FALSE

Cinematography? Well done. Soundtrack? Reflective and calming. Content? Intriguing and relatable. The video presented a study in which Redwood trees were injected with a substance similar to adrenaline to keep them from going dormant. The injected trees died because they weren’t allowed the natural cycle of “wintering.”

The video’s message was that this can happen to us as well if we’re always busy with no seasons of rest. And that can be true. But the video was inaccurate. There never was such a study. Redwoods are evergreens and never go dormant. And the trees in the video were giant Sequoias not coastal Redwoods. As thoughtful as the video seemed to be, it was based on falsehoods.

We find ourselves living in an age where, due to our technologies, lies are magnified and multiplied to the limits of convincing us they’re true. The book of Proverbs, that compendium of godly wisdom, speaks often of the stark difference between truth and lies. “Truthful lips endure forever,” says the proverb, “but a lying tongue lasts only a moment” (12:19). And the very next adage tells us, “Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil, but those who promote peace have joy” (V. 20).

Honesty applies to everything from God’s commands to videos about wintering. The truth “endures forever.”

목자가 주는 용기

경기가 끝나기 2초 전, 텍사스 A&M 대학 미식축구팀의 키커인 세스 스몰 선수가 경기장에 들어서자 107,000명에 달하는 관중들이 모두 기대에 차서 일어섰습니다. 오랜 기간 계속 우승한 전국 최고의 팀과 38대 38로 동점을 이루고 있었던 A&M 팀은 필드 골을 성공시킨다면 극적인 역전승을 확정 짓게 됩니다. 침착한 모습의 스몰은 공을 차기 위해 정해진 자리에 섰습니다. 그리고 공이 골대를 통과해 승리가 확정되자 경기장은 흥분의 열기로 뒤덮였습니다.

기자들이 스몰에게 그런 긴장된 순간을 어떻게 준비했는지 묻자, 그는 시편 23편의 첫 번째 구절 “여호와는 나의 목자시니 내게 부족함이 없으리로다” 라는 말씀을 계속해서 되뇌었다고 말했습니다. 스몰은 힘과 확신이 필요할 때 자신이 개인적으로 깊이 체험해 온 목자이신 하나님을 의지했던 것입니다.

시편 23편이 사랑받는 이유는 우리를 적극적으로 보살피시는 믿음직한 사랑의 목자가 있어서 우리가 평화롭고 위로 받을 수 있다는 것을 확인시켜 주기 때문입니다. 다윗은 극심하게 힘든 상황에서 겪는 실제적인 두려움과 하나님이 주시는 위안, 이 두 가지 모두에 대해 말하고 있습니다(4절). “위안” 이라고 번역된 말은 하나님이 함께하시며 인도하시기 때문에 계속 나아갈 수 있는 확신, 혹은 자신감과 용기의 의미를 담고 있습니다.

앞이 보이지 않는 힘든 상황 속을 걸어갈 때, 우리는 선한 목자이신 주님이 우리와 함께하신다는 것을 부드럽게 상기시켜주는 말씀을 계속 반복하면서 용기를 낼 수 있습니다.

COURAGE FROM THE SHEPHERD

The nearly 107,000 people in the stadium stood in anticipation as Texas A&M college football kicker Seth Small took the field with only two seconds left in the game. With A&M tied 38-38 against the best team in the country—a perennial football powerhouse—a successful field goal would seal an epic upset victory. Looking calm, Small lined up to take the kick. The stadium erupted in pandemonium after the ball sailed through the uprights for the winning score.

When questioned by reporters how he prepared for such an intense moment, Small said he kept repeating to himself the first verse of Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” When Small needed strength and reassurance, he drew on the deeply personal metaphor of God as a shepherd.

Psalm 23 is a beloved psalm because it assures us that we can be at peace, or comforted, because we have a loving and trustworthy shepherd who actively cares for us. David testified both to the reality of fear in intense or difficult situations as well as the comfort God provides (V. 4). The word translated “comfort” conveys assurance, or the confidence and courage to keep going because of His guiding presence.

When walking into challenging circumstances—not knowing what the outcome will be—we can take courage as we repeat the gentle reminder that the Good Shepherd walks with us.

여러 나라의 민족들을 사랑하기

자녀를 사랑하고 헌신적인 중남미 출신 부모의 딸로 태어난 나는 부모님이 더 나은 기회를 찾아 친척 중 처음으로 미국에 이민 올 용기를 내신 데에 감사하고 있습니다. 부모님은 청년 때에 뉴욕에서 만나 결혼하고, 언니와 나를 낳고 지금까지 각자 자기 사업을 운영하고 있습니다.

뉴욕 태생인 나는 히스패닉 전통을 이어받고 자라면서 다양한 배경을 가진 사람들을 만나며 그들에게 매료되었습니다. 예를 들면, 과거 브로드웨이 극장이었던 한 다문화 교회에서 저녁 예배 시간에 나의 믿음을 나눈 적이 있었습니다. 여러 다른 문화를 가진 사람들에게 하나님의 사랑에 대해 말하는 것은 마치 여러 민족들이 그리스도의 한 몸으로 함께 모이는 천국과도 같은 모습을 엿보는 것 같았습니다.

요한계시록에서 요한 사도는 천국의 놀라운 모습을 보여줍니다. “내가 보니 각 나라와 족속과 백성과 방언에서 아무도 능히 셀 수 없는 큰 무리가 나와 보좌 앞과 어린 양 앞에 서서”(요한계시록 7:9). 우리의 구원자이신 하나님은 “찬송과 영광”을 받으실 것이며, 더 나아가 “세세토록” 받기에 합당한 분이십니다(12절).

지금은 천국이 어떨지 살짝 엿보기만 할 뿐이지만, 예수님을 믿는 우리는 언젠가 주님과 함께, 그리고 다른 나라의 다른 문화와 다른 언어를 가진 사람들과 함께 연합하게 될 것입니다. 하나님이 여러 나라의 민족들을 사랑하시니, 우리도 그리스도 안에 있는 우리 지구촌 가족들을 사랑하도록 합시다.

LOVING THE NATIONS

As the daughter of two loving and hard-working parents from Central and South America, I’m grateful they had the courage to be the first in their families to immigrate to the United States for better opportunities. They met as young adults in New York City, married, had my sister and me, and went on to run their respective businesses.

As a native New Yorker, I’ve grown up embracing my Hispanic heritage and have been fascinated with people of diverse backgrounds. For instance, I once shared my story of faith at an evening service at a multicultural church that meets in a former Broadway theater. Speaking to a multicultural group about God’s love is only a glimpse of what heaven will be like when we see people from different nations come together as the body of Christ.

In Revelation, the apostle John gives us this amazing picture of heaven: “Before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb” (REVELATION 7:9). God our Savior will receive the “praise and glory” and so much more He’s worthy of “for ever and ever” (V. 12).

Now we have just a glimpse of what heaven will be like. But one day, we who believe in Jesus will be united with Him and with people from different countries, cultures, and languages. Since God loves the nations, let’s also love our global family in Christ.
