주님 말씀대로 하기

지하실에 물탱크가 필요했던 나는 그것이 어떤 식으로 설치되어야 하는지 정확히 알고 있었기에 시공업자에게 분명하게 설명을 해주었습니다. 그런데 다음날 점검을 해보니 내가 설명한 대로 따르지 않아서 화가 났습니다. 그가 계획을 변경하여 그런 결과가 나온 것입니다. 그의 변명은 내 지시대로 따르지 않은 것만큼이나 나를 불쾌하게 만들었습니다.

그가 콘크리트 작업을 다시 하는 것을 지켜보며 내 분노가 가라앉자, 문득 죄의식이 나를 사로잡았습니다. ‘나는 내 삶에서 주님 말씀에 순종하려고 얼마나 많은 일을 다시 해야 했던가?’

빈번하게 하나님이 명령하시는 대로 행하지 않았던 옛 이스라엘 백성들처럼 우리도 우리 마음대로 행할 때가 많습니다. 그러나 순종은 하나님과의 관계가 깊어질 때 얻어지는 바람직한 결과입니다. 모세는 백성들에게 말했습니다. “너희 하나님 여호와께서 너희에게 명령하신 대로 너희는 삼가 행하여......하나님 여호와께서 너희에게 명령하신 모든 도를 행하라”(신명기 5:32-33). 모세 이후 오랜 세월이 흐른 뒤에 오신 예수님은 제자들에게 주님을 믿고 또 서로 사랑하라고 촉구하셨습니다.

지금도 우리를 복된 삶으로 인도하는 것은 마음으로부터의 순종입니다. 성령님이 우리가 순종할 수 있도록 도와주시기 때문에, “[우리] 안에서 행하시는 이는 하나님이시니 자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 [우리]에게 소원을 두고 행하게 하시나니”(빌립보서 2:13)라는 말씀을 기억하면 도움이 됩니다.

Doing What He Says

I needed an underground water tank and knew precisely how I wanted it constructed, so I gave clear instructions to the builder. The next day when I inspected the project, I was annoyed when I realized that he had failed to carry out my instructions. He had changed the plan and therefore the effect. The excuse he gave was as irritating as his failure to follow my directives.

As I watched him redo the concrete work, and as my frustration diminished, a guilty conviction swept over me: How many times have I needed to redo things in my life in obedience to the Lord?

Like the ancient Israelites who frequently failed to do what God asked them to do, we too often go our own way. Yet obedience is a desired result of our deepening relationship with God. Moses told the people, “Be careful to do what the Lord your God has commanded you . . . . Walk in obedience to all that [he] has commanded you” (DEUT. 5:32–33). Long after Moses, Jesus urged His disciples to trust Him and to love one another.

This is still the kind of surrender of our hearts that leads to our well-being. As the Spirit helps us to obey, it is good to remember that He “works in [us] to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (PHIL. 2:13). - LAWRENCE DARMANI

좋은 모방

어린이 담당 교역자가 설교를 들으려고 모여 있는 아이들에게 말했습니다. “오늘 우리는 ‘흉내 내기’ 게임을 할 거예요. 내가 무언가를 말하면 여러분은 거기에 맞는 몸짓을 하는 거예요. 준비됐죠? 그럼, ‘닭’!” 아이들은 그들의 팔을 퍼덕거리고, 꼬꼬댁거리며, 홰를 치면서 닭 우는 소리를 냈습니다. 그 다음에는 ‘코끼리’, ‘축구선수’, ‘발레리나’였습니다. 마지막에는 ‘예수님’이었는데, 많은 아이들이 머뭇거리고 있을 때 여섯 살짜리 아이가 미소를 크게 지으며 바로 팔을 벌려 모두를 환영하는 모습을 취했습니다. 모두가 다 박수갈채를 보냈습니다.

우리는 우리의 소명이 삶의 모든 상황에서 예수님처럼 행하는 것이라는 사실을 얼마나 쉽게 잊어버리는지 모릅니다. “그러므로 사랑을 받는 자녀같이 너희는 하나님을 본받는 자가 되고 그리스도께서 너희를 사랑하신 것같이 너희도 사랑 가운데서 행하라 그는 우리를 위하여 자신을 버리사 향기로운 제물과 희생 제물로 하나님께 드리셨느니라” (에베소서 5:1-2).

바울 사도는 어려운 환경 가운데서도 데살로니가 교인들이 그들의 믿음대로 사는 모습을 보여준 것에 대하여 칭찬하였습니다. “너희는 우리와 주를 본받은 자가 되었으니 그러므로 너희가 마게도냐와 아가야에 있는 모든 믿는 자의 본이 되었느니라”(데살로니가전서 1:6-7).

예수님이 하나님의 사랑의 복음으로 팔을 활짝 펴 모든 사람들을 맞아주신 것처럼, 우리 안에 계신 예수님의 삶이 우리를 권면하여 우리로 하여금 이 세상을 헤쳐 나갈 수 있게 해줍니다.

Good Imitation

“Today we’re going to play a game called Imitation,” our children’s minister told the kids gathered around him for the children’s sermon. “I’ll name something and you act out what it does. Ready? Chicken!” The kids flapped their arms, cackled, and crowed. Next it was elephant, then football player, and then ballerina. The last one was Jesus. While many of the children hesitated, one six-year-old with a big smile on his face immediately threw his arms wide open in welcome. The congregation applauded.

How easily we forget that our calling is to be like Jesus in the everyday situations of life. “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (EPH. 5:1–2).

The apostle Paul commended the followers of Jesus in Thessalonica for the outward demonstration of their faith in difficult circumstances. “You became imitators of us and of the Lord,” Paul wrote. “And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia” (1 THESS. 1:6–7).

It is the life of Jesus in us that encourages and enables us to walk through this world as He did—with the good news of God’s love and with arms open wide in welcome to all. - DAVID MCCASLAND

오리 조각법

나와 내 아내 캐롤린은 1995년에 핍스 페스터스 본을 버지니아주의 매브리힐에 있는 그의 공방에서 만났습니다. 2002년에 세상을 떠난 그는 목각 공예의 달인으로 그의 조각품들은 실물을 거의 완벽하게 재현해냈습니다. 그는 말했습니다. “오리를 조각하는 것은 쉽습니다. 나무토막을 보면서 오리의 모습을 머릿속에 그려놓고, 그 오리 모양 이외의 것들을 모두 깎아내면 됩니다.”

하나님도 마찬가지이십니다. 그분은 거친 나무토막과 같은 당신과 나를 보시고 나무껍질이나 옹이, 잔가지 안에 숨겨진 그리스도를 닮은 우리의 모습을 그리시면서 그 형상에 맞지 않는 것들을 모두 깎아 없애기 시작하십니다. 만일 우리가 완성된 “오리 목각”처럼 아주 아름다운 우리의 모습을 볼 수 있다면 우리는 매우 감탄할 것입니다.

그러나 그러기 위해 우리는 먼저 우리가 나무토막인 것을 인정하고 예술가이신 하나님이 우리를 그분의 뜻대로 자르고 모양을 만들고 갈아낼 수 있도록 허락해야 합니다. 그것은 우리가 처해있는 여건이 편안하건 불편하건 그 여건을 하나님이 우리를 조각하기 위한 도구라고 받아들이는 것을 의미합니다. 하나님은 우리를 볼품없는 나무토막 속에 이미 새겨놓으신 아름다운 피조물의 모습으로 한 번에 한 부분씩 만들어 가십니다.

그 과정이 좋을 때도 있지만 때로는 고통스럽기도 합니다. 그러나 결국에는 모든 하나님의 도구들이 우리를 “그 아들의 형상”(로마서 8:29) 에 부합되게 해줍니다.

그분의 모습대로 되기를 원하십니까? 조각의 거장이신 하나님의 손에 당신을 맡기십시오.

How to Carve a Duck

My wife, Carolyn, and I met Phipps Festus Bourne in 1995 in his shop in Mabry Hill, Virginia. Bourne, who died in 2002, was a master wood carver whose carvings are almost exact replicas of real objects. “Carving a duck is simple,” he said. “You just look at a piece of wood, get in your head what a duck looks like, and then cut off everything that doesn’t look like it.”

So it is with God. He looks at you and me—blocks of rough wood—envisions the Christlike woman or man hidden beneath the bark, knots, and twigs and then begins to carve away everything that does not fit that image. We would be amazed if we could see how beautiful we are as finished “ducks.”

But first we must accept that we are a block of wood and allow the Artist to cut, shape, and sand us where He will. This means viewing our circumstances—pleasant or unpleasant—as God’s tools that shape us. He forms us, one part at a time, into the beautiful creature He envisioned in our ungainly lump of wood.

Sometimes the process is wonderful; sometimes it is painful. But in the end, all of God’s tools conform us “to the image of his Son” (ROM. 8:29).

당신은 걱정이 생길 때 어떻게 하십니까? 마음속에 묻어두십니까, 아니면 하늘에 계신 분께 올려드립니까?

잔인한 앗수르 왕 산헤립은 예루살렘을 정복하려고 준비하면서, 히스기야 왕에게 유다는 그가 정복했던 다른 모든 나라들과 마찬가지일 것이라는 전갈을 보냈습니다. 히스기야는 그 전갈을 예루살렘의 성전으로 가져가 “그 글을 여호와 앞에 펴 놓고”(이사야 37:14), 전능하신 하나님께 기도하며 도와주시기를 간구하였습니다.

그러자 곧 이사야 선지자가 히스기야에게 “왕께서 앗수르 왕 산헤립의 일로 하나님께 기도하였기 때문에 하나님께서 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다”라며 하나님의 메시지를 전해주었습니다(이사야 37:21-22). 성경은 히스기야의 기도가 바로 그날 밤에 응답받았다고 말하고 있습니다. 하나님은 기적적인 방법으로 개입하셔서 성문 밖의 적군들을 물리치셨습니다. 앗수르 군대는 화살 하나도 쏘지 못했고(33절), 산헤립은 예수살렘을 떠나 다시는 돌아오지 못했습니다.

하나님이 히스기야에게 주신 세 마디, “네가 기도하였기 때문에” 라는 말은 우리의 근심거리를 어디로 가져가야 가장 좋은지를 보여줍니다. 히스기야가 하나님께로 향했기 때문에, 하나님은 그와 그의 백성들을 구원해주셨습니다. 우리가 우리의 근심거리를 기도로 바꿀 때, 우리는 예상치 못한 방법들을 통해 하나님이 신실하신 분이라는 것을 발견하게 됩니다!

Because You Prayed

What do you do with your worries? Do you turn them inward, or turn them upward?

When the brutal Assyrian King Sennacherib was preparing to destroy Jerusalem, he sent a message to King Hezekiah saying that Judah would be no different from all the other nations he had conquered. Hezekiah took this message to the temple in Jerusalem, and “spread it out before the Lord” (ISA. 37:14). He then prayed and asked for help from Almighty God.

Soon afterward Isaiah the prophet delivered this message to Hezekiah from the Lord: “Because you prayed about King Sennacherib of Assyria, the Lord has spoken” (ISA. 37:21–22 NLT). Scripture tells us that Hezekiah’s prayer was answered that very night. God intervened miraculously, conquering the enemy forces outside the city gates. The Assyrian army didn’t
even “shoot an arrow” (V. 33). Sennacherib would leave Jerusalem, never to return.

Three words in God’s message to Hezekiah—“Because you prayed”—show us the best place to go with our worries. Because Hezekiah turned to God, He rescued him and his

진정한 자유

올라우다 에퀴아노(대략 1745-1796)는 겨우 11살 때 납치되어 노예로 팔려갔습니다. 서아프리카에서 서인도제도로, 그리고 버지니아 식민지로, 마침내 영국으로 가는 여정은 참으로 비참했습니다. 스무 살 때 자유를 획득했지만, 그에게는 비인간적인 취급을 받았던 경험으로 감정적으로나 육체적으로 상처가 남아있었습니다.

여전히 노예로 남아있는 사람들이 있었기 때문에 자신의 자유를 즐길 수 없었던 에퀴아노는 영국에서 노예제도폐지 운동가가 되었습니다. 그는 그의 자서전(그 당시에 예전 노예 신분으로서는 전례가 없는)에서 노예로서 받았던 끔직한 대우를 묘사하고 있습니다.

그러한 자유를 들어보지 못한 곳은 어디든지 주님의 말씀이 선포되어야 합니다. 우리는 우리의 죄와 부끄러움, 절망에서 자유로워질 수 있습니다. 예수님을 믿음으로써 우리는 진정 자유로워질 수 있습니다!

Free Indeed

Olaudah Equiano (c. 1745–1796) was only 11 years old when he was kidnapped and sold into slavery. He made the harrowing journey from West Africa to the West Indies, then to the colony of Virgina, and then to England. By the age of 20 he purchased his own freedom, still bearing the emotional and physical scars of the inhumane treatment he had experienced.

Unable to enjoy his own freedom while others were still enslaved, Equiano became active in the movement to abolish slavery in England. He wrote his autobiography (an unheard of achievement for a former slave in that era) in which he described the horrific treatment of the enslaved.

When Jesus came, He fought a battle for all of us who are enslaved and unable to fight for ourselves. Our slavery is not one of outward chains. We are held by our own brokenness and sin. Jesus said, “Everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:34–36).

Wherever such a freedom seems unheard of, His words need to be declared. We can be liberated from our guilt, shame, and hopelessness. By trusting Jesus, we can be free indeed! —BILL CROWDER

부드러운 영향력

시어도어 루스벨트가 미국의 26대 대통령(1901-1909)이 되기 몇 년 전, 장남인 시어도어 주니어가 아프다는 말을 듣게 되었습니다. 아들 테드의 병은 나아지겠지만, 루스벨트는 아들의 병의 원인에 충격을 받았습니다. 의사의 말이 그가 바로 아들의 병의 원인이었다는 것입니다. 테드는 “신경쇠약”으로 고생하고 있었는데, 시어도어는 아들에게 연약한 어린 시절 때 자기도 되어보지 못한 “투사” 영웅이 되라고 무자비하게 압력을 가해왔던 것입니다. 이 이야기를 듣고 아버지 루스벨트는 다음과 같이 상냥스러워지겠다는 약속을 하게 됩니다. “이제부터 테드에게 육신으로나 마음으로나 다시는 강요하지 않겠다.”

Gentle Influence

A few years before he became the 26th U.S. president (1901–1909), Theodore Roosevelt got word that his oldest son, Theodore Jr., was ill. While his son would recover, the cause of Ted’s illness hit Roosevelt hard. Doctors told him that he was the cause of his son’s illness. Ted was suffering from “nervous exhaustion,” having been pressed unmercifully by Theodore to become the “fighter” hero-type he himself had not been during his own frail childhood. Upon hearing this, the elder Roosevelt made a promise to relent: “Hereafter I shall never press Ted either in body or mind.”

The father was true to his word. From then on he paid close attention to how he treated his son—the very same son who would one day bravely lead the landing of Allied soldiers on Utah Beach in World War II.

God has entrusted each of us with influence in the lives of others. We have a deep responsibility in those relationships, not only to spouses and children, but to friends, employees, and customers. The temptation to press too hard, to demand too much, to force progress, or to orchestrate success can lead us to harm others even when we don’t realize it. For this very reason, followers of Christ are urged to be patient and gentle with one another (Col. 3:12). Since Jesus, the Son of God, came in humility, how can we withhold such kindness from one another?

마지막 도로 여행

마다가스카르의 5번 국도에서는 하얀 모래사장이 있는 해안선과 야자수 숲, 인도양의 아름다운 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 그러나 125마일(약 200킬로미터)의 이 2차선 도로는 돌멩이와 모래, 그리고 진흙 때문에 세계에서 가장 나쁜 길 중의 하나로 악명이 높습니다. 사람들은 관광객들에게 이 숨 막히는 경관을 보러가기를 원한다면 반드시 사륜구동 차에다가 숙련된 운전기사와 자동차 정비사를 함께 대동해야 한다고 충고합니다.

세례 요한은 거친 길과 황폐한 경관을 지나 여행하는 이들에게 메시아가 오신다는 복음을 알리려고 왔습니다. 요한은 여러 세기 전에 이사야 선지자가 기록한 말을 여러 번 반복하며, 호기심 많은 군중에게 “너희는 주의 길을 준비하라 그의 오실 길을 곧게 하라”(누가복음 3:4-5; 이사야 40:3)고 촉구했습니다.

하나님 아버지, 우리 스스로는 할 수 없는 일들을 하나님께서 우리 안에서 행해 주소서. 하나님을 우리 삶에 맞아들이지 못하게 하는 어떤 교만의 산이나 절망의 골짜기들을 다 제거해주소서.

회개는 우리가 하나님과 함께 걸어가는 길을 깨끗이 치워준다.

The Ultimate Road Trip

Madagascar’s National Road 5 offers the beauty of a white sand coastline, palm forests, and the Indian Ocean. Its 125 miles of two-track road, bare rock, sand, and mud, however, have given it a reputation for being one of the worst roads in the world. Tourists looking for breathtaking views are advised to have a four-wheel-drive vehicle, an experienced driver, and an onboard mechanic.

John the Baptist came to announce the good news of the coming Messiah to those traveling on rough roads and through barren landscape. Repeating the words of the prophet Isaiah written centuries earlier, he urged curious crowds to “prepare the way for the LORD” and to “make straight paths for him” (Luke 3:4–5; Isa. 40:3)

John knew that if the people of Jerusalem were going to be ready to welcome their long-awaited Messiah their hearts needed to change. Mountains of religious pride would need to come down. Those in the valley of despair because of their broken lives would need to be lifted up.

Neither could be done by human effort alone. Those who refused to respond to the Spirit of God by accepting John’s baptism of repentance failed to recognize their Messiah when He came (Luke 7:29–30). Yet those who saw their need for change discovered in Jesus the goodness and wonder of God. —MART DEHAAN

하나님의 이름을 지음

크리스토퍼 라이트는 그가 쓴 ‘내가 이해할 수 없는 하나님’이라는 책에서, 하나님께 처음으로 이름을 지어드린 사람 중에 전혀 그럴 것 같지 않은 사람이 있다고 이야기합니다. 그 사람은 하갈입니다!

하갈의 이야기는 혼란스러울 정도로 솔직한 인간 역사의 면모를 보여줍니다. 하나님이 아브람과 사래가 아들을 낳을 것이라고 말씀하신 이래로 여러 해가 흘러, 사래는 나이가 더 들었고 또 인내심을 더 잃어가고 있었습니다. 그래서 그녀는 하나님을 “돕기” 위해 그 당시의 풍습을 따르기로 합니다. 그녀는 노예 하갈을 남편에게 주고, 하갈은 임신하게 됩니다.

예상대로 불화가 일어납니다. 사래는 하갈을 학대하고, 하갈은 결국 도망을 갑니다. 혼자 사막에 있을 때 하갈은 여호와의 사자를 만나는데, 하나님이 예전에 아브람에게 하신 것(창세기 15:5 참조)과 놀랍게도 비슷한 약속을 하갈에게 해줍니다. “내가 네 씨를 크게 번성하여 그 수가 많아 셀 수 없게 하리라”(16:10). 또 여호와의 사자는 하갈의 아들에게 이스마엘이라는 이름을 주는데, 그 뜻은 “하나님이 들으신다”입니다(11절). 볼 수도 들을 수도 없는 많은 신들을 섬기는 문화 속에서 왔던 이 노예는 여호와의 이름을 “나를 살피시는 하나님”(13절)이라고 부릅니다.

“우리를 살피시는 하나님”은 조급한 영웅들과 힘이 없어 도망가는 사람들의 하나님이십니다. 또한 빈곤하고 외로운 사람뿐 아니라 부유하고 연줄이 좋은 사람들의 하나님이시기도 합니다. 하나님은 우리를 보고 들으시며, 심히 안타까워하는 마음으로 우리 한 사람 한 사람을 돌보아주십니다.

Naming God

In his book The God I Don’t Understand, Christopher Wright observes that an unlikely person is one of the first to give God a name. It’s Hagar!

Hagar’s story provides a disturbingly honest look at human history. It’s been years since God told Abram and Sarai they would have a son, and Sarai has only grown older and more impatient. In order to “help” God, she resorts to a custom of the day. She gives her slave, Hagar, to her husband, and Hagar becomes pregnant.

Predictably, dissension arises. Sarai mistreats Hagar, who runs away. Alone in the desert, she meets the angel of the Lord, who makes a promise strikingly similar to one God had made earlier—to Abram (see Gen. 15:5). “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count” (16:10). The angel names Hagar’s son Ishmael, which means “God hears” (v. 11). In response, this slave from a culture with multiple gods that could neither see nor hear gives God the name “You are the God who sees me” (v. 13).

“The God who sees us” is the God of impatient heroes and powerless runaways. He’s the God of the wealthy and well-connected as well as the destitute and lonely. He hears and sees and cares, achingly and deeply, for each of us.

하나님의 대변인

라디오방송 인터뷰 전화를 기다리고 있는 동안 나는 무척 긴장하고 있었습니다. 방송 진행자가 무엇을 질문할 것인지, 내가 어떻게 답변할 것인지 나는 알고 싶었습니다. 나는 기도했습니다. “주님, 저에게는 종이 위에 쓰는 것이 훨씬 편합니다. 하지만 모세의 경우와 같이 주님께서 제게 할 말을 주실거라고 믿겠습니다.”

물론, 하나님의 백성을 인도하는 지도자로서 그들을 이집트의 노예생활에서 벗어나 약속의 땅으로 인도한 모세와 나 자신을 비교하는 것은 아닙니다. 하나님은 망설이는 지도자 모세에게 이스라엘 백성들이 그의 말을 들을 것이라는 확신을 갖게 할 필요가 있었습니다. 하나님은 양치기의 지팡이가 뱀으로 바뀌는 것(출애굽기 4:3)과 같은 몇 가지의 이적들을 보여주셨지만, 모세는 자기가 말을 잘 하지 못한다고 하면서 지도자의 역할을 받아들이는 것을 망설였습니다(10절). 그래서 하나님은 모세에게 자신이 여호와이며 그가 말하는 것을 도와주겠다고 그에게 상기시켜 주셨습니다. 하나님은 “모세의 입과 함께 있겠다”(성경학자들에 따르면, 원래의 언어를 직역한 것)고 하셨습니다.

성령님이 오순절에 오신 이후 계속 하나님의 자녀들 안에 거하시면서, 아무리 우리가 부적당하다고 느낄지라도 하나님이 우리에게 주신 사명을 잘 감당하게 해주실 거라는 것을 우리는 알고 있습니다. 하나님은 “우리의 입과 같이 계실” 것입니다.

God's Mouthpiece

My nerves fluttering, I waited for the phone to ring and the radio interview to start. I wondered what questions the host would ask and how I would respond. “Lord, I’m much better on paper,” I prayed. “But I suppose it’s the same as Moses—I need to trust that you will give me the words to speak.”

Of course I’m not comparing myself with Moses, the leader of God’s people who helped them escape slavery in Egypt to life in the Promised Land. A reluctant leader, Moses needed the Lord to reassure him that the Israelites would listen to him. The Lord revealed several signs to him, such as turning his shepherd’s staff into a snake (Ex. 4:3), but Moses hesitated to accept the mantle of leadership, saying he was slow of speech (v. 10). So God reminded him that He is the Lord and that He would help him speak. He would “be with his mouth” (as the original language translates, according to biblical scholars).

We know that since the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, God’s Spirit lives within His children and that however inadequate we may feel, He will enable us to carry out the assignments He gives to us. The Lord will “be with our mouths.” —AMY BOUCHER PYE

명예스러운 삶

어떤 존경받는 정치지도자가 많은 사람들이 듣는 연설을 하는 동안, 자기 나라의 명예로운 국회의원들 대부분이 매우 ‘불명예스럽다’는 것을 밝히자 전 국민의 관심을 끌게 되었습니다. 부패한 생활방식, 겉치레하는 태도, 불미스러운 말투와 다른 비행들을 언급하면서, 그는 국회의원들을 신랄히 비난하고 그들이 새로워질 것을 강력히 촉구하였습니다. 그러나 예상한대로, 그들은 그의 연설을 불쾌하게 들었고, 오히려 그에 대한 역비난을 바로 쏟아냈습니다.

우리가 지도자 위치의 공적인 관직에 있지는 않더라도, 그리스도를 따르는 우리는 “택하신 족속이요 왕 같은 제사장들이요 거룩한 나라요 그의 소유가 된 백성”(베드로전서 2:9)입니다. 그렇기 때문에, 우리 주님은 우리에게 주님을 명예롭게 하는 생활방식을 요구하십니다.

예수님의 제자 베드로는 어떻게 그렇게 할 수 있는지 실제적으로 조언해줍니다. 그는 “영혼을 거슬러 싸우는 육체의 정욕을 제어하라”(11절)고 강력히 권면합니다. 비록 베드로가 ‘명예로운’ 이라는 단어는 사용하지 않았지만, 그리스도에 합당한 행동을 할 것을 우리에게 요구하고 있습니다.

바울 사도는 빌립보교인들에게 보낸 서신에서 그것을 다음과 같이 표현합니다. “무엇에든지 정결하며 무엇에든지 사랑받을 만하며 무엇에든지 칭찬받을 만하며 무슨 덕이 있든지 무슨 기림이 있든지 이것들을 생각하라”(빌립보서 4:8). 참으로 이런 것들이 우리 주님을 명예롭게 하는 행동 특성들입니다.

Honorable Living

While delivering a well-publicized speech, a respected leader and statesman got the attention of his nation by declaring that most of his country’s honorable Members of Parliament (MPs) were quite dishonorable. Citing lifestyles of corruption, pompous attitudes, unsavory language, and other vices, he rebuked the MPs and urged them to reform. As expected, his comments didn’t go well with them and they dispatched counter-criticisms his way.

We may not be public officials in positions of leadership, but we who follow Christ are a “chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession” (1 Peter 2:9). As such, our Lord calls us to lifestyles that honor Him.

The disciple Peter had some practical advice on how to do this. He urged us to “abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul” (v. 11). Although he didn’t use the word honorable, he was calling us to behavior worthy of Christ.

As the apostle Paul phrased it in his letter to the Philippians, “Whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Phil. 4:8). Indeed, these are the characteristics of behavior that honor our Lord. —LAWRENCE DARMANI

Lord, when we are honest with You, we understand how often we fall far short of honorable behavior. We know how much we need You. By Your Spirit, help us replace any selfish thoughts, words, and actions with things that please You and draw others to You.

We honor God’s name when we call Him our Father and live like His children.
