남을 위해 죽음

나는 새를 무척 좋아합니다. 그래서 새 여섯 마리를 사서 새장 안에 넣고 집에 가져가서 딸 엘리스에게 주었습니다. 엘리스는 새들을 매일 돌보기 시작했습니다. 그런데 새 한마리가 병에 걸려 죽고 말았습니다. 우리는 새들이 새장 안에 갇혀있지 않다면 더 잘 살 수 있지 않을까 생각하고는, 남은 다섯 마리를 새장에서 풀어주고 새들이 기쁨에 차서 날아가는 것을 지켜보았습니다.

그러자 엘리스가 지적해주었습니다. “아빠 그거 아세요? 한 마리 새가 죽었기 때문에 우리가 나머지 새들을 놓아주었어요.”

이것이 바로 예수님께서 우리를 위해 행하신 일이 아닐까요? 한 사람(아담)의 죄가 온 세상에 죄를 가져온 것처럼, 한 사람(예수님)의 의가 믿는 자들에게 구원을 가져다주었습니다(로마서 5:12-19). 예수님은 “나는 선한 목자라 선한 목자는 양들을 위하여 목숨을 버린다”(요한복음 10:11)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

요한은 이 말씀을 보다 더 실제적으로 적용해서 “그(예수 그리스도) 가 우리를 위하여 목숨을 버리셨으니......우리도 형제들을 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것이 마땅하니라”(요한1서 3:16)라고 말합니다. 이 말씀은 문자 그대로 죽음 자체를 뜻하지는 않겠지만, 우리의 삶이 예수님의 희생적 사랑에 맞추어질 때, 바로 ‘우리 목숨을 버리는 것’이 될 수 있습니다. 예를 들어, 우리 물질을 떼어서 다른 사람들과 함께 나누거나(17절), 위로와 교제가 필요한 이들과 함께 시간을 보내는 것입니다.

Dying for Others

I love birds, which is why I bought six caged birds and carried them home to our daughter Alice, who began to care for them daily. Then one of the birds fell ill and died. We wondered if the birds would be more likely to thrive if they were not caged. So we freed the surviving five and observed them fly away in jubilation.

Alice then pointed out, “Do you realize, Daddy, that it was the death of one bird that caused us to free the rest?”

Isn’t that what the Lord Jesus did for us? Just as one man’s sin (Adam’s) brought condemnation to the world, so one Man’s righteousness (Jesus’s) brought salvation to those who believe (ROM. 5:12–19). Jesus
said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (JOHN 10:11).

John makes it more practical when he says, “Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters” (1 JOHN 3:16). This won’t likely mean literal death, but as we align our lives with Jesus’s example of sacrificial love, we find that we are “laying down our lives.” For instance, we might choose to deprive ourselves of material goods in order to share them with others (V. 17) or make time to be with someone who needs comfort and companionship.

누구나 환영합니다!

드디어 교회 청년부가 열심히 기도로 준비했던 영화관람의밤이 되었습니다. 온 동네에 광고지가 붙었고 따뜻한 피자가 오븐에서 준비되고 있었습니다. 청년부 담당목사 스티브는 뉴욕의 폭력조직 단원들이 어떤 젊은 목사에 의해 예수님 앞으로 직접 나아온 내용을 담은 이 영화로 청년부에 새로운 가입자가 생겨나기를 바랐습니다.

그러나 스티브는 같은 날 저녁에 텔레비전에서 중요한 미식축구 경기가 중계된다는 것을 몰랐고, 결국 기대했던 것보다 훨씬 적은 수의 사람들이 영화를 보러 왔습니다. 속으로 한숨을 쉬며 조명을 낮추고 영화를 막 시작하려는 순간, 가죽옷을 입은 그 동네의 오토바이클럽 멤버 다섯 명이 들어왔습니다. 스티브의 얼굴은 창백해졌습니다.

티독이라 알려진 그들의 리더가 스티브를 향해 고갯짓을 하며, “이거 공짜이고 누구나 볼 수 있는 거 맞지?”라고 했습니다. 스티브가 “청년부만 해당됩니다”라고 입을 떼려는데, 티독이 몸을 굽혀 바닥에 떨어진 WWJD (What Would Jesus Do, 예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까)라는 글자가 새겨진 팔찌를 집어 들고 “이거 네꺼야?”라고 물었습니다. 스티브는 당황해서 화끈거리는 얼굴로 고개를 끄덕였고, 그들이 자리를 잡는 동안 기다렸습니다.

당신도 스티브와 같은 상황에 처해본 적이 있습니까? 예수님에 관한 복음을 나누고자 하면서도, 마음속에 복음을 받아들이기에 “적합한” 사람들의 명단을 이미 정해놓고 있었던 경우 말입니다. 예수님은 주님과 함께 있던 사람들 때문에 종교지도자들로부터 자주 비난을 받았지만, 주님은 모두가 꺼려하는 사람들을 기꺼이 맞이하셨습니다. 왜냐면 그들에게 주님이 가장 필요하다는 것을 주님은 아셨기 때문입니다 (누가복음 5:31-32).

All Welcome!

The much-prayed-for film night at the church youth club had finally arrived. Posters had been displayed all around the village and pizzas were warming in the oven. Steve, the youth pastor, hoped that the film—about gang members in New York who were brought face-to-face with the claims of Jesus by a young pastor—would bring new recruits to the club.

But he hadn’t realized that a key football match was being shown on television that evening, so attendance was much smaller than he had hoped for. Sighing inwardly, he was about to dim the lights and begin the
film when five leather-clad members of the local motorbike club came in. Steve went pale.

The leader of the group, who was known as TDog, nodded in Steve’s direction. “It’s free and for everyone, right?” he said. Steve opened his mouth to say, “Youth club members only” when TDog bent down and picked up a bracelet with the letters WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) stamped on it. “This yours, mate?” he asked. Steve nodded, hot with embarrassment, and waited while the new guests found a seat.

Have you ever been in Steve’s situation? You long to share the good news about Jesus, but you have a mental list of the “right” people who would be acceptable? Jesus was often criticized by the religious authorities for the company He kept. But He welcomed those everyone else avoided, because He knew they needed Him most (LUKE 5:31–32). - MARION STROUD

없었던 것 같습니다. 다윗은 사울로부터 피신하던 길에 나발이라는 부유한 자의 양들을 지켜주었습니다. 다윗은 나발이 양의 털을 깎고 잔치를 연다는 소식을 듣고 부하 열 명을 보내어 그 일에 대한 대가로 음식을 나눠줄 것을 정중히 요청했습니다(4-8절).

다윗의 요청에 대한 나발의 응답은 무례하기 짝이 없었습니다. 그는 “다윗은 누구냐......내가 어찌 내 떡과 물과......고기를 가져다가 어디서 왔는지도 알지 못하는 자들에게 주겠느냐”(10-11절)라고 말했습니다. 나발은 다윗을 잔치에 초대하지 않음으로써 그 당시의 나그네에 대한 예법을 지키지 않았으며, 모욕의 말들로 그를 멸시했고, 다윗이 한 일에 대한 대가를 지불하지 않음으로써 결국 도적질을 했습니다.

사실 우리 안에도 나발과 같은 모습이 조금씩 있어서 우리도 때로는 어리석게 행동합니다. 이것에 대한 유일한 해결책은 우리의 죄를 하나님께 시인하는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리를 찾아오셔서 용서하시고, 가르치시고, 우리에게 그분의 지혜를 주실 것입니다.

Warning!

The following warnings have been found on consumer products:
“Remove child before folding.” (baby stroller)
“Does not supply oxygen.” (dust mask)
“Never operate your speakerphone while driving.” (hands-free cell phone product called the “Drive ’n’ Talk”)
“This product moves when used.” (scooter)

An appropriate warning label that Nabal could have worn would have been: “Expect folly from a fool” (SEE 1 SAM. 25). He certainly was irrational as he addressed David. On the run from Saul, David had provided security detail for the sheep of a wealthy man named Nabal. When David learned that Nabal was shearing those sheep and celebrating with a feast, he sent ten of his men to politely ask for food as remuneration for these duties (VV. 4–8).

Nabal’s response to David’s request was beyond rude. He said, “Who is this David? . . . Why should I take my bread and water, and the meat . . . , and give it to men coming from who knows where?” (VV. 10–11). He broke the hospitality code of the day by not inviting David to the feast, disrespected him by calling out insults, and essentially stole from him by not paying him for his work.

The truth is, we all have a little bit of Nabal in us. We act foolishly at times. The only cure for this is to acknowledge our sin to God. He will step in to forgive us, instruct us, and give us His wisdom. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

마음 바꾸기

미국 남북전쟁의 마지막 날, 조수아 체임벌린이라는 장교가 북군을 지휘하고 있었습니다. 남군이 항복하기 위해 행군하는 길 양 옆에 그의 병사들이 도열해 서 있었습니다. 잘못된 말 한 마디나 호전적인 행동 하나로도 애써 만든 평화가 살육으로 뒤바뀔 수 있는 상황이었습니다. 여기서 체임벌린은 그의 병사들에게 지나가는 적군에게 경례를 하라는, 감동적이면서도 뛰어난 명령을 하였습니다! 조롱하는 말이나 악한 말을 하지 말라, 다만 ‘받들어 총’을 하고, 검을 세워 경례를 표하라고 했던 것입니다.

예수님이 누가복음 6장에서 용서에 관한 말씀을 하신 것은, 우리로 은혜가 있는 사람과 없는 사람의 차이를 알게 하시기 위함이었습니다. 죄 사함을 깨달은 사람은 그렇지 않은 사람들과 명백히 다릅니다. 우리는 다른 사람들이 불가능하다고 여기는 것, 곧 원수를 용서하고 사랑하는 일을 해야 합니다. 예수님은 “너희 아버지의 자비로우심 같이 너희도 자비로운 자가 되라”(36절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

우리가 이 원칙을 받아들일 때 직장과 가정에 줄 수 있는 영향력을 상상해보십시오. 경례 하나로 군대를 하나로 만들 수 있다면, 우리를 통해 비춰지는 그리스도의 은혜 속에는 얼마나 큰 능력들이 나타날까요! 성경은 에서가 자신을 속인 그의 동생을 받아들인 것(창세기 33:4)과, 삭개오가 기쁨으로 회개한 것(누가복음 19:1-10), 그리고 돌아온 탕자에게 달려가 그를 맞이하는 아버지의 모습(누가복음 15장) 속에서 그 모습을 보여주고 있습니다.

그리스도의 은혜로 말미암아, 적과 우리 사이에 있는 미움과 다툼은 오늘로 마지막이 될 수 있기를 소원합니다.

Changing Hearts

On the last day of the US Civil War, officer Joshua Chamberlain was in command of the Union army. His soldiers lined up on both sides of the road that the Confederate army had to march down in surrender. One wrong word or one belligerent act and the longed-for peace could be turned to slaughter. In an act as brilliant as it was moving, Chamberlain ordered his troops to salute their foe! No taunting here, no vicious words—only guns in salute and swords raised to honor.

When Jesus offered His words about forgiveness in Luke 6, He was helping us understand the difference between people of grace and people without grace. Those who know His forgiveness are to be strikingly unlike everyone else. We must do what others think impossible: Forgive and love our enemies. Jesus said, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (V. 36).

Imagine the impact in our workplaces and on our families if we were to embrace this principle. If a salute can make armies whole again, what power there must be in Christ’s grace reflected through us! Scripture gives evidence of this in Esau’s embrace of his deceitful brother (GEN. 33:4), in Zacchaeus’s joyful penance (LUKE 19:1–10), and in the picture of a father racing to greet his prodigal son (LUKE 15).

With the grace of Christ, may we let this be the final day of bitterness and dispute between our enemies and us. - RANDY KILGORE

반대로 행하기

거친 산길을 여행하는 일은 힘겨워 보이지만 야외 활동을 좋아하는 열성파들에게는 오히려 매력을 더해줄 뿐입니다. 등산객들은 휴대할 수 있는 양보다 더 많은 물이 필요하기 때문에, 등반하는 도중에 자연수를 이용할 수 있도록 필터가 부착된 물병을 구입합니다. 그러나 그런 물병으로 물을 마시는 과정이 자연스럽지가 않습니다. 병을 기울여서는 물을 마실 수가 없고, 갈증이 난 등산객이 물이 필터를 통과할 수 있도록 바람을 불어넣어주어야 합니다. 자연스러워 보이는 것과는 실제로 반대인 셈입니다.

우리가 예수님을 따를 때에도 납득이 안 되는 많은 것들을 발견합니다. 바울은 ‘규칙을 지키는 것이 우리를 하나님께로 더 가까이 가도록 이끌지 않는다’라고 하는 한 가지 예를 지적합니다. “여러분은...... 어찌하여 아직도 이 세상에 속하여 사는 것과 같이 규정에 얽매여 있습니까? ‘붙잡지도 말아라. 맛보지도 말아라. 건드리지도 말아라’ 하니, 웬 말입니까? 이런 것들은 다......사람의 규정과 교훈을 따른 것입니다”(골로새서 2:20-22, 새번역).

그러면 우리는 어떻게 해야 할까요? 바울이 답을 줍니다. “그러므로 너희가 그리스도와 함께 다시 살리심을 받았으면 위의 것을 찾으라”(3:1). 바울은 아직 생생히 살아 있는 사람들에게 “너희가 죽었고 너희 생명이 그리스도와 함께 하나님 안에 감추어졌음이라”(3절)라고 말했습니다.

우리는 우리 자신이 이 세상 가치에 대해서는 “죽었고” 그리스도에 대하여는 살아있다고 여겨야 합니다. 우리는 이제 “너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되어야 한다”(마태복음 20:26) 라고 말씀하신 주님께서 친히 본으로 보여주신 삶의 방식대로 살기를 간절히 원합니다.

Doing the Opposite

A wilderness excursion can seem daunting, but for outdoor enthusiasts this only adds to the appeal. Because hikers need more water than they can carry, they purchase bottles with built-in filters so they can use water sources along the way. But the process of drinking from such a container is counterintuitive. Tipping
the bottle does nothing. A thirsty hiker has to blow into it to force the water through the filter. Reality is contrary to what seems natural.

As we follow Jesus, we find much that is counterintuitive. Paul pointed out one example: Keeping rules won’t draw us closer to God. He asked, “Why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: ‘Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!’? These rules . . . are based on merely human commands and teachings” (COL. 2:20-22).

So what are we to do? Paul gave the answer. “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above” (3:1). “You died,” he told people who were still very much alive, “and your life is now hidden with Christ in God” V. 3.

We are to consider ourselves “dead” to the values of this world and alive to Christ. We now aspire to a way of life demonstrated by the One who said, “Whoever wants to become great

주 안에서 연합됨

우리는 성경에서 길게 나열되는 이름들을 접하게 될 때 건너뛰고 싶은 생각이 듭니다. 그러나 예수님이 주님의 이름으로 섬기라고 부르신 열두 제자의 명단에서처럼, 우리는 거기에서 귀한 보물을 캐낼 수 있습니다. 예수님이 베드로, 즉 반석이라 부르셨던 시몬이나, 어부 형제 야고보와 요한, 배반자였던 가룟 유다 같은 많은 이름들은 익숙합니다. 그러나 우리는 세리였던 마태와 열심당원이었던 시몬이 한 때 서로 원수사이였을 거라는 것을 지나치기 쉽습니다.

마태는 로마 정부를 위해 세금을 거두었기 때문에 그의 동족 유대인들이 보기에는 적에게 협력했던 것입니다. 세 리 들 은 그 들 의 부 정 직 한 행위와 유대인들에게 하나님이 아닌 정부에 돈을 바치라고 요구했기 때문에 멸시를 받았습니다. 이와 반대로 예수님께서 부르시기 전에 열심당원이었던 시몬은 로마를 미워하고, 과격하고 폭력적인 수단을 사용하여 로마의 전복을 시도했던 유대민족주의자 그룹에서 열심히 활동하였습니다.

마태와 시몬이 상반되는 정치적 신념을 지니고 있었지만, 복음서들은 그들이 그 신념들을 놓고 언쟁이나 싸움을 했다고 기록하고 있지 않습니다. 그들은 그리스도를 따르면서, 적어도 어느 정도는 이전에 충성했던 일들을 뒤로 하는데 성공했던 것 같습니다.

우리도 인간으로 오신 하나님이신 예수님께 우리의 시선을 고정시킬 때, 성령께서 하나 되게 해주심을 통해 믿는 사람들이 더욱 하나로 연합되는 것을 발견할 수 있습니다.

United in Christ

When we come across a list of names in the Bible, we might be tempted to skip over it. But we can find treasures there, such as in the list of the twelve apostles whom Jesus called to serve in His name. Many are familiar—Simon whom Jesus called Peter, the rock. Brothers James and John, fishermen. Judas Iscariot, the betrayer. But we could easily overlook that Matthew the tax collector and Simon the Zealot must once have been enemies.

Matthew collected taxes for Rome, and therefore, in the eyes of his fellow Jews, collaborated with the enemy. Tax collectors were despised for their corrupt practices and for requiring the Jewish people to give money to an authority other than God. On the other hand, before Jesus’s call, Simon the Zealot was devoted to a group of Jewish nationalists who hated Rome and sought to overturn it, often through aggressive and violent means.

Although Matthew and Simon held opposing political beliefs, the gospels don’t document them bickering or fighting about them. They must have had at least some success in leaving their previous allegiances behind as they followed Christ.

When we too fix our eyes on Jesus, the God who became Man, we can find increasing unity with our fellow believers through the bond of the Holy Spirit. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

마실 수 있는 책

세계 곳곳에서 마실 수 있는 깨끗한 물을 찾기가 아주 힘든 상황에서, ‘물이 생명이다’라는 이름의 한 단체에서 “마실 수 있는 책”이라는 훌륭한 자원을 개발했습니다. 그 책의 종이는 해로운 박테리아를 거의 99.9퍼센트 걸러내는 은 나노입자로 코팅되어 있습니다. 한 장 한 장 뜯어낼 수 있는 책의 종이는 반복해서 사용하여 100 리터나 되는 물을 거를 수 있는데, 그 비용은 한 장당 단돈 4센트밖에 되지 않습니다.

성경 또한 특이하게 “마실 수 있는” 책입니다. 요한복음 4장에는 특별한 종류의 갈증과 물에 대해 기록되어 있습니다. 우물가에 나온 여인은 그녀의 육신의 갈증을 풀어줄 깨끗하고 시원한 물 이상의 무엇인가가 필요했습니다. 그녀에게는 “생수”의 원천을 아는 것이 절박했습니다. 그녀는 오직 하나님께로 부터만 오는 은혜와 용서가 필요했습니다.

하나님의 말씀인 성경은 “생수”의 유일한 원천이신 하나님의 아들 예수님을 가리키는, 근본적인 “마실 수 있는” 책입니다. 예수님이 주는 물을 마시는 자는 “영생하도록 솟아나는 샘물”(14절)을 경험하게 될 것입니다.

The Drinkable Book

Because it is so difficult in parts of the world to find clean drinking water, an organization called Water Is Life developed a wonderful resource called “The Drinkable
Book.” The paper in the book is coated in silver nanoparticles that filter out almost 99.9 percent of harmful bacteria! Each tear-out page can be used and reused to filter up to 100 liters of water at the cost of only four pennies per page.

The Bible is also an unusually “drinkable” Book. In John 4, we read of a particular kind of thirst and a special kind of water. The woman at the well needed much more than to quench her physical thirst with clean, clear liquid. She was desperate to know the source of “living water.” She needed the grace and forgiveness that comes from God alone.

God’s Word is the ultimate “drinkable” Book that points to God’s Son as the sole source of “living water.” And those who accept the water that Jesus gives will experience “a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (V. 14). - CINDY HESS KASPER

십자가 붙잡기

위대한 런던의 설교자 찰스 스펄전은 1856년에 기독교 사역을 위해 목회자를 양성하는 신학교를 설립했습니다. 이 학교는 1923년에 스펄전 대학으로 이름이 바뀌었습니다. 현재 그 학교의 문장에는 십자가를 붙잡고 있는 손의 그림과 함께 “내가 붙잡고, 붙잡힌다”라는 뜻의 라틴어 문장 “Et Teneo, Et Teneor” 가 쓰여 있습니다.

스펄전은 그의 자서전에 이렇게 썼습니다. “이것이 우리 학교의 좌우명 입니다. 우리는 담대히 손을 뻗어 그리스도의 십자가를 붙잡습니다......십자가가 그 끌어당기는 능력으로 우리를 단단히 붙잡고 있기 때문입니다. 우리는 모든 이들이 진리를 붙잡는 동시에, 진리, 특별히 십자가에 못 박히신 그리스도의 진리에 붙잡히기를 소망합니다”.

빌립보 교인들에게 보내는 편지에서 바울은 이 진리를 자기 인생의 초석이라고 표현했습니다. “내가......온전히 이루었다 함도 아니라 오직 내가 그리스도 예수께 잡힌바 된 그것을 잡으려고 달려가노라”(빌립보서 3:12). 예수님을 따르는 우리는 예수님께서 주님의 은혜와 권능으로 우리를 단단히 붙잡고 계시는 것처럼, 이 십자가의 교훈을 다른 이들에게 전해야 합니다. “내가 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못 박혔나니 그런즉 이제는 내가 사는 것이 아니요 오직 내 안에 그리스도께서 사시는 것이라” (갈라디아서 2:20).

우리 주님이 매일 그분의 사랑으로 우리를 붙잡아주시기 때문에, 우리는 그분의 사랑의 말씀을 다른 이들에게 전하는 것입니다.

Grasping the Cross

In 1856, Charles Spurgeon, the great London preacher, founded the Pastors’ College to train men for the Christian ministry. It was renamed Spurgeon’s College in 1923. Today’s college crest shows a hand grasping a cross and the Latin words, Et Teneo, Et Teneor, which means, “I hold and am held.”

In his autobiography, Spurgeon wrote, “This is our College motto. We . . . hold forth the Cross of Christ with a bold hand . . . because that Cross holds us fast by its attractive power. Our desire is that every man may both hold the Truth, and be held by it; especially the truth of Christ crucified.”

In Paul’s letter to the Philippians, he expressed this truth as the bedrock of his life. “Not that I have . . . already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” (PHIL. 3:12). As followers of Jesus, we extend the message of the cross to others as Jesus holds us fast in His grace and power. “I have been crucified with Christ; and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (GAL. 2:20).

Our Lord holds us in His grip of love each day—and we hold out His message of love to others. - DAVID MCCASLAND

찬양하고 간구하기

위기의 청소년을 대상으로 뉴욕시에서 시작된 ‘틴 챌린지’라는 사역은 특이한 기도의 헌신에서 비롯되었습니다. 설립자인 데이빗 윌커슨은 자기의 텔레비전을 팔아버리고 TV를 보던 시간(매일 밤 2시간)에 기도를 하였습니다. 그 후 수개월 동안 그는 새로 시작할 일에 대한 확신을 얻음은 물론, 하나님을 찬양하고 간구하는 둘 사이의 균형에 대해서도 깨닫게 되었습니다.

솔로몬 왕의 성전 봉헌기도는 이러한 균형을 잘 보여줍니다. 솔로몬은 하나님의 거룩하심과 신실하심을 강조하는 것으로 시작합니다. 다음으로 그 계획이 성공적으로 마칠 수 있게 된 것에 대한 공로를 하나님께 돌리고, “하늘과 하늘들의 하늘이라도 주를 용납하지 못하겠거든 하물며 내가 건축한 이 성전이오리이까”(역대하 6:18)라고 외 치며 하나님의 위대하심을 강조합니다.

하나님을 칭송한 후에 솔로몬은 하나님께 성전에서 일어나는 모든 일을 특별히 보살펴달라고 간구합니다. 이스라엘 백성을 자비롭게 보셔서 그들이 죄를 고백할 때 자비를 베풀어달라고 하나님께 간구합니다.

솔로몬이 기도를 마치자마자, “불이 하늘에서부터 내려와서 그 번제물과 제물들을 사르고 여호와의 영광이 그 성전에 가득했습니다”(7:1). 이 놀라운 응답은 우리가 찬양하고 기도하는 그 전능하신 분이 우리의 간구를 들으시고 돌보시는 바로 그분이심을 깨닫게 해줍니다.

Praising and Asking

Teen Challenge, a ministry to at-risk youth that started in New York City, was born from an unusual commitment to prayer. Its founder, David Wilkerson, sold his television set and spent his TV-watching time (two hours each night) praying. In the months that followed, he not only gained clarity about his new endeavor but he also
learned about the balance between praising God and asking Him for help.

King Solomon’s temple dedication prayer shows this balance. Solomon began by highlighting God’s holiness and faithfulness. Then he gave God credit for the
success of the project and emphasized God’s greatness, declaring, “The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!” 2 CHRON. 6:18.

After exalting God, Solomon asked Him to pay special attention to everything that happened inside the temple. He asked God to show mercy to the Israelites and to provide for them when they confessed their sin.

Immediately after Solomon’s prayer, “fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple” 7:1. This incredible response reminds us that the mighty One we praise and speak to when we pray is the same One who listens to and cares about our requests. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

좋은 약

내가 살고 있는 가나의 아크라 시에서는 일부 택시와 미니버스 운전자들의 부주의한 운전과 욱하는 성질, 욕설 때문에 도로 위에서 싸움이 자주 일어납니다. 하지만 내가 목격했던 한 경우는 달랐습니다. 한 부주의한 택시 운전자가 버스를 거의 들이받을 뻔했습니다. 버스기사가 화가 나서 상대 운전자에게 소리를 지르겠거니 했는데, 그러질 않는 것이었습니다. 대신에 버스기사는 굳은 표정을 풀고, 안절부절 못하고 있는 택시기사를 향해 환한 미소를 지어보였습니다. 그리고 그 미소는 놀라운 결과를 가져왔습니다. 택시기사는 손을 들어 사과하며 미소를 지어보이면서 떠나갔습니다. 긴장이 해결되었습니다.

웃음은 인간의 뇌 화학체계에 놀라운 영향을 줍니다. 과학자들은 “우리가 웃을 때 실제 생리적으로 긴장을 완화시키는 효과를 지닌 엔돌핀이라는 뇌의 화학물질이 분비된다” 는 사실을 발견했습니다. 웃음이 긴장된 상황을 풀어줄 뿐만 아니라 우리 안의 긴장도 완화시켜주는 것입니다. 우리의 감정은 다른 사람들 뿐 아니라 우리 자신에게도 영향을 줍니다. 성경은 우리에게 “너희는 모든 악독과 노함과 분냄과 떠드는 것과 비방하는 것을 모든 악의와 함께 버리고 서로 친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기라”(에베소서 4:31-32)고 가르쳐줍니다.

화나 긴장이나 마음의 응어리가 하나님과의 관계나 타인과의 관계를 위태롭게 할 때, 우리 스스로의 기쁨과 안위를 위해 “마음의 즐거움은 양약”이라는 사실을 기억하는 게 도움이 됩니다.

Good Medicine

Careless driving, rising tempers, and use of foul language among some taxi and minibus drivers are a constant source of traffic fights in our city of Accra, Ghana. But one traffic incident I witnessed took a different turn. A bus was almost hit by a careless taxi driver. I expected the bus driver to get angry and yell at the other driver, but he didn’t. Instead, the bus driver relaxed his stern face and smiled broadly at the guilty looking taxi driver. And the smile worked wonders. With a raised hand, the taxi
driver apologized, smiled back, and moved away—the tension diffused.

A smile has a fascinating effect on our brain chemistry. Researchers have found that “when we smile it releases brain chemicals called endorphins which have an actual physiological relaxing effect.” Not only can a smile diffuse a tense situation, but it can also diffuse tension within us. Our emotions affect us as well as others. The Bible teaches us to “get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another” (EPH. 4:31-32).

When anger or tension or bitterness threatens our relationship with the Lord and with others, it helps to remember that “a cheerful heart is good medicine” for our own joy and well-being. - LAWRENCE DARMANI
