붉은 깃털 미끼

몇 년 전에 그리스의 작가 앨리언이 2세기경에 쓴 낚시 미끼에 대한 글을 우연히 보게 되었는데, 거기에 이렇게 기술되어 있었습니다. “보로가와 데살로니가 지역 사이로 아스트라쿠스라는 강이 흐르는데, 거기에 점박이 물고기 [송어]가 살고 있다. 그 물고기를 많이 잡기 위한 덫으로, 낚시 바늘 주위로 선홍색 양털을 단단히 묶고 깃털 두 개를 붙인다. 그러고 나서 그 덫을 던져 넣으면, 물고기들은 그 색깔에 미혹되어 입 안 가득 채울 생각을 하며 몰려든다”(‘동물의 본성’에서).

낚시꾼들은 오늘날도 여전히 붉은 깃털 미끼라고 불리는 이런 미끼를 사용합니다. 2,200년 전에 처음 사용되었던 그것이 아직도 송어를 “더 많이 잡는” 덫으로 쓰이고 있는 것입니다.

그 고전작품을 읽으며, 나는 ‘옛 것이라고 다 시대에 뒤떨어진 것이 아니다. 특히 사람은 더 그렇다.’라고 생각했습니다. 만일 우리가 만족하고 즐거운 노년생활을 통해 하나님의 충만하심과 그 깊이를 다른 사람들에게 보여준다면, 우리는 우리 삶의 마지막 때에 유용한 사람이 될 것입니다. 나이가 들었다고 해서, 몸이 약해지는 것에 마음을 빼앗기거나 과거를 한탄하며 보낼 필요가 없습니다. 노년에 하나님과 함께 성숙해온 사람들의 열매인 평온과 환희, 용기와 온유로 가득해질 수도 있습니다.

“여호와의 집에 심겼음이여......그는 늙어도 여전히 결실하며 진액이 풍족하고 빛이 청청하니”(시편 92:13-14).

The Red Hackle

Several years ago I stumbled across a bit of fishing lore in a second-century bc work by the Greek writer Aelian. “Between Boroca and Thessalonica runs a river called the Astracus, and in it there are fish with spotted skins [trout].” He then describes a “snare for the fish, by which they get the better of them. They fastened crimson red wool round a hook and attached two feathers. Then they would throw their snare, and the fish, attracted by the color, comes up, thinking to get a mouthful” (On the Nature of Animals).

Fishermen still use this lure today. It is called the Red Hackle. First used over 2,200 years ago, it remains a snare for trout by which we “get the better of them.”

When I read that ancient work I thought: Not all old things are passé—especially people. If through contented and cheerful old age we show others the fullness and deepness of God, we’ll be useful to the end of our days. Old age does not have to focus on declining health, pining over what once was. It can also be full of tranquility and mirth and courage and kindness, the fruit of those who have grown old with God.

이메일을 보냈는데 엉뚱한 사람에게 보내졌다거나, 그 메일 안에 해롭고 거친 말이 들어있다는 것을 갑자기 알게 된 적이 있습니까? 키보드를 눌러서 보내는 것을 멈출 수만 있다면 얼마나 좋을까요. 자, 이제는 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 몇몇 회사들은 이메일을 보낸 뒤에 짧은 시간을 줘서 이메일이 컴퓨터를 떠나기 전에 멈추게 할 수 있는 기능을 제공해줍니다. 일단 보낸 후에는 이메일은 마치 이미 돌이킬 수 없는 내뱉은 말과 같습니다. 이 “전송보류” 기능은 만병통치의 기능으로 보인다기보다는, 우리가 조심스럽게 말하는 것이 지극히 중요하다는 점을 알려줍니다.

베드로 사도는 그의 첫 번째 서신에서 예수님을 따르는 자들에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “악을 악으로, 욕을 욕으로 갚지 말고 도리어 복을 빌라...... 그러므로 생명을 사랑하고 좋은 날 보기를 원하는 자는 혀를 금하여 악한 말을 그치며 그 입술로 거짓을 말하지 말고 악에서 떠나 선을 행하고 화평을 구하며 그것을 따르라”(베드로전서 3:9-11).

시편기자 다윗은 “여호와여 내 입에 파수꾼을 세우시고 내 입술의 문을 지키소서”(시편 141:3)라고 말했습니다. 이는 매일 하루를 시작할 때나, 말로 반격을 하고 싶은 모든 상황에서 아주 중요한 기도입니다.

주님, 오늘 우리의 말을 지켜주셔서 우리가 말로 다른 사람들을 해치지 않게 하소서.

Unsend

Have you ever sent an email and suddenly realized it went to the wrong person or it contained harmful, harsh words? If only you could press a key and stop it. Well, now you can. Several companies offer a feature that gives you a brief time after sending an email to stop it from leaving your computer. After that, the email is like a spoken word that cannot be unsaid. Rather than being seen as a cure-all, an “unsend” feature should remind us that it’s extremely important to guard what we say.

In the apostle Peter’s first letter, he told the followers of Jesus, “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing. . . . For, ‘whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech. They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it’” (1 PETER 3:9–11).

The psalmist David wrote, “Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips” (PS. 141:3). That’s a great prayer for the beginning of each day and in every situation when we want to strike back with words.

최고의 거래!

얼마나 구매해야 충분할까요? 많은 선진국에서 쇼핑에 점점 더 많은 시간과 노력을 들이는 그런 날에 우리는 이 간단한 질문을 해볼 수 있습니다. 나는 미국의 추수감사절 다음 날인 블랙프라이데이에 대해 말하는 것입니다. 그날에는 많은 상점들이 일찍 문을 열고 가격을 많이 할인해서 파는데, 지금은 미국에서 다른 나라로도 많이 퍼져나갔습니다. 어떤 소비자들은 지출할 수 있는 재정이 한정되어 있어 그들이 살 수 있는 가격으로 물건을 구입하려고 합니다. 그러나 안타깝게도, 욕심에 자극된 사람들이 있어서 물건을 싸게 사려고 서로 다투다가 폭력이 발생하곤 합니다.

‘전도자’( 전도서 1 : 1 )라고 알려진 구약성경 기자의 지혜가, 상점에서 그리고 우리 마음속에서 우리가 직면하게 되는 소비열풍에 해독제를 제공해줍니다. 돈을 좋아하는 사람은 절대 만족하지 못하고, 그의 소유에 의해 지배받게 될 것이라고 전도자는 지적합니다. 더욱이 그들은 죽을 때에 아무것도 가지고 가지 못합니다. “그가 모태에서 벌거벗고 나왔은즉 그가 나온 대로 돌아가고”(5:15). 바울 사도가 디모데에게 보낸 편지에서 돈을 사랑하는 것은 모든 악의 뿌리이며, 우리는 “자족하는 마음으로 경건”을 추구해야 한다고 말한 것은 전도자의 말을 반복한 것입니다(디모데전서 6:6-10).

Best Deal Ever!

How much is enough? We might ask this simple question on a day that many developed countries increasingly devote to shopping. I speak of Black Friday, the day after the US Thanksgiving holiday, in which many stores open early and offer cut-price deals; a day that has spread from the States to other nations. Some shoppers have limited resources and are trying to purchase something at a price they can afford. But sadly, for others greed is the motivation, and violence erupts as they fight for bargains.

The wisdom of the Old Testament writer known as “the Teacher” (ECCL. 1:1) provides an antidote to the frenzy of consumerism we may face in the shops— and in our hearts. He points out that those who love money never will have enough and will be ruled by their possessions. And yet, they will die with nothing: “As everyone comes, so they depart” (5:15). The apostle Paul echoes the Teacher in his letter to Timothy, when he says that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and that we should strive for “godliness with contentment” (1 TIM. 6:6–10).

Whether we live in a place of plenty or not, we all can seek unhealthy ways of filling the God-shaped hole in our hearts. But when we look to the Lord for our sense of peace and well-being, He will fill us with His goodness and love. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

감사 게임

매년 가을 코너스톤 대학 교정에서 열리는 아주 즐거운 추수감사 축제는 학생들의 많은 사랑을 받고 있습니다. 작년에는 한 그룹의 학생들이 탁자에 앉아 게임을 했습니다. 다른 사람이 이미 말한 것을 다시 말하지 않고, 3초 이내에 그들이 감사하게 여기는 것을 말하는 것이었습니다. 누구든지 머뭇거리는 사람은 게임에서 탈락하였습니다.

시험, 마감일, 규율, 그리고 기타 대학생이 할 수 있는 많은 불평거리 등, 학생들이 불평할 만한 일들이 아주 많이 있지만, 이 학생들은 감사할 일을 선택한 것입니다. 나는 이 학생들이 불평하기로 했을 때보다 이 게임을 마친 후에 훨씬 더 기분이 좋았을 것이라고 추측합니다.

불평할 일은 언제든 있게 마련이지만, 우리가 잘 찾아보면 감사할 축복도 항상 있습니다. 바울이 우리가 그리스도 안에서 새롭게 된 것을 묘사할 때, 유일하게 한 번 이상 언급한 특징이 “감사”입니다. 사실 그 말은 세 번 언급됩니다. 그는 “감사하라”고 골로새서 3장 15절에서 말하고 있고, “마음에 감사함으로”(16절) 찬양하라고 하며. 무엇을 하든지 반드시 “하나님 아버지께 감사하라”(17절)고 말합니다. 이 편지를 감옥에서 썼다는 것을 생각해보면, 감사하라는 바울의 가르침은 참으로 놀랍습니다!

Game of Thanks

Every autumn we throw a scrumptious Thanksgiving feast on campus at Cornerstone University. Our students love it! Last year a group of students played a game at their table. They challenged each other to name something they were thankful for—in three seconds or less—without repeating what someone else had said. Anyone who hesitated was out of the game.

There are all kinds of things that students might gripe about—tests, deadlines, rules, and a host of other college-type complaints. But these students had chosen to be thankful. And my guess is that they all felt a lot better after the game than they would have if they had chosen to complain.

While there will always be things to complain about, if we look carefully there are always blessings to be thankful for. When Paul describes our newness in Christ, “thankfulness” is the only characteristic mentioned more than once. In fact it is mentioned three times. “Be thankful,” he says in Colossians 3:15. Sing to God “with gratitude in your hearts” (V. 16). And whatever you do, be sure to be “giving thanks to God the Father” (V. 17). Paul’s instruction to be thankful is astonishing when we consider that he wrote this letter from prison!

명성과 겸손

많은 사람들은 자신이 유명해지는 것이든, 아니면 유명한 사람들의 세부적인 삶을 추적하는 것이든, 명성에 집착합니다. 책이나 영화 소개를 위해 세계를 돌아다니는 것, 심야 쇼 출연, 수백만 명의 트위터 추종자들.

최근 미국의 한 조사에서, 조사원들은 특별히 개발된 연산방식을 사용하여 인터넷을 샅샅이 검색하여 유명한 사람들의 이름에 순위를 매겼습니다. 그 순위에서 예수님이 역사상 가장 유명한 인물로 최정상을 차지했습니다.

그렇지만 예수님은 유명한 사람의 지위를 얻으려고 관심을 두신 적이 전혀 없었습니다. 비록 예수님에 관한 소식이 갈릴리 지역에 빠르게 퍼질 때 명성이 주님을 따라오긴 했지만(마가복음 1:28; 누가복음 4:37), 주님은 이 세상에 계실 때 결코 명예를 추구하지 않으셨습니다(마태복음 9:30; 요한복음 6:15).

예수님이 가시는 곳은 어디든지 많은 무리가 금방 모여들었고, 주님이 행하시는 기적은 사람들을 주님께로 끌어들였습니다. 그러나 사람들이 주님을 강제로 왕으로 추대하려고 했을 때, 주님은 슬그머니 그 자리를 떠나셨습니다(요한복음 6:15). 하나님 아버지의 목적에 맞추어 주님은 반복해서 하나님 아버지의 뜻과 시간에 따르셨고(4:34; 8:29; 12:23), “자기를 낮추시고, 죽기까지 순종하셨으니, 곧 십자가에 죽기까지 하셨습니다”(빌립보서 2:8, 새번역).

명성은 예수님의 목표가 전혀 아니었습니다. 주님의 목적은 단순했습니다. 하나님의 아들로서 주님은 겸손하고 순종적으로, 그리고 자발적으로 우리 죄를 위해 자기 자신을 희생 제물로 내어주셨습니다.

Fame and Humility

Many of us are obsessed with fame—either with being famous ourselves or with following every detail of famous people’s lives. International book or film tours. Late-night show appearances. Millions of followers on Twitter.

In a recent study in the US, researchers ranked the names of famous individuals using a specially developed algorithm that scoured the Internet. Jesus topped the list as the most famous person in history.

Yet Jesus was never concerned about obtaining celebrity status. When He was here on earth, He never sought fame (MATT. 9:30; JOHN 6:15)—although fame found Him all the same as news about Him quickly traveled throughout the region of Galilee (MARK 1:28; LUKE 4:37).

Wherever Jesus went, crowds soon gathered. The miracles He performed drew people to Him. But when they tried to make Him a king by force, He slipped away by Himself (JOHN 6:15). United in purpose with His Father, He repeatedly deferred to the Father’s will and timing (4:34; 8:29; 12:23). “He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross” (PHIL. 2:8).

Fame was never Jesus’s goal. His purpose was simple. As the Son of God, He humbly, obediently, and voluntarily offered Himself as the sacrifice for our sins. - CINDY HESS KASPER

Longing for Home

아내가 방안에 들어와서 대형 괘종시계의 장식장에 머리를 밀어 넣고 있는 나를 보고는, “당신 뭐하고 있어요?”라고 물었습니다. 나는 “이 시계에서 우리 부모님 집 냄새가 나.” 라고 멋쩍게 대답하고는 문을 닫았습니다. “어쩌면 내가 잠시 고향에 가 있었던 느낌이라고나 할까.”

후각은 강렬하게 기억을 일깨워줄 수 있습니다. 우리는 그 시계를 거의 20년 전 부모님 집에서부터 국토를 가로질러 옮겨왔습니다. 그러나 시계 내부의 나무 향기는 나를 계속 어린 시절로 되돌아가게 합니다.

히브리서 기자는 이와 다르게 본향을 그리워하는 사람들에 대해 말하고 있습니다. 그들은 과거를 돌아보기보다는 믿음으로 하늘에 있는 본향을 바라보았습니다. 그들이 바라는 것이 비록 멀리 떨어져 있는 것처럼 보일지라도, 그들은 영원히 하나님과 함께 있을 본향으로 그들을 데려다주신다는 약속을 하나님이 신실하게 지키실 것을 믿었습니다 (히브리서 11:13-16).

빌립보서 3장 20절은 우리에게 “우리의 시민권은 하늘에 있어, 그곳에서 오시는 구주, 곧 주 예수 그리스도를 열심히 기다려야” 한다고 상기시켜줍니다. 예수님을 보게 될 그날을 기대하고, 주님을 통해 하나님께서 우리에게 약속하신 모든 것을 받게 될 것을 기대하면, 우리의 초점을 계속 유지하는데 도움이 됩니다. 과거나 현재는 우리 앞에 놓여있는 것과 결코 비교될 수 없습니다!

본향을 그리워함

My wife walked into the room and found me poking my head inside the cabinet of our grandfather clock. “What are you doing?” she asked. “This clock smells just like my parents’ house,” I answered sheepishly, closing the door. “I guess you could say I was going home for a moment.”

The sense of smell can evoke powerful memories. We had moved the clock across the country from my parents’ house nearly twenty years ago, but the aroma of the wood inside it still takes me back to my childhood.

The writer of Hebrews tells of others who were longing for home in a different way. Instead of looking backward, they were looking ahead with faith to their home in heaven. Even though what they hoped for seemed a long way off, they trusted that God was faithful to keep His promise to bring them to a place where they would be with Him forever (HEB. 11:13-16).

Philippians 3:20 reminds us that “our citizenship is in heaven,” and we are to “eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” Looking forward to seeing Jesus and receiving everything God has promised us through Him help us keep our focus. The past or the present can never compare with what’s ahead of us! - JAMES BANKS

에밀리는 친구들이 모여 가족과 함께 하는 추수감사절의 전통에 대해 이야기하는 것을 듣고 있었습니다. “우리는 방에 둘러앉아서 각자 하나님께 무엇을 감사하는지 이야기하지.” 라고 게리가 말했습니다.

다른 친구는 그의 가족이 나누었던 추수감사절 음식과 기도시간에 관해 언급했습니다. 그는 아버지가 돌아 가시기 전에 함께 했던 시간을 회상하며, “비록 아버지가 치매에 걸리셨지만, 주님께
감사하는 기도는 또렷하게 하셨어.”라고 말했습니다. 랜디는 “나의 가족은 명절이면 다 함께 노래하는 특별한 시간을 가져. 할머니는 계속해서 노래하고 또 노래하시지.” 라고 했습니다. 에밀리는 자기 가족을 생각하자 슬픔과 질투가 일어나 이렇게 불평을 터뜨렸습니다. “우리 집 전통은 칠면조를 먹고 텔레비전만 보고, 하나님이나 감사하는 것에 대해서는 아무 말도 없어.”

에밀리는 곧 자신의 태도에 거북함을 느꼈습니다. 그녀는 ‘너도 그 가족의 일부야. 그날의 분위기를 바꾸고 싶으면 어떤 다른 일을 하고 싶니?’라고 자신에게 물어보았습니다. 그녀는 그들이 자기 자매, 조카딸, 형제, 조카딸의 딸인 것을 주님께 감사한다고 개인적으로 각 사람에게 말해야겠다고 결심했습니다. 그날이 되어 에밀리가 한 사람 한 사람에게 감사를 표현하자, 그들은 모두 사랑을 느꼈습니다. 그것은 그녀의 가족이 하던 일반적인 대화가 아니었으므로 쉬운 일이 아니었지만, 각 사람에게 그녀의 사랑을 나누었을 때 그녀는 기쁨을 경험하게 되었습니다.

What About You?

Emily listened as a group of friends talked about their Thanksgiving traditions with family. “We go around the room and each one tells what he or she is thankful to God for,” Gary said.

Another friend mentioned his family’s Thanksgiving meal and prayertime. He recalled time with his dad before he had died: “Even though Dad had dementia, his prayer of thanks to the Lord was clear.” Randy shared, “My family has a special time of singing together on the holiday. My grandma goes on and on and on!” Emily’s sadness and jealousy grew as she thought of her own family, and she complained: “Our traditions are to eat turkey, watch television, and never mention anything about God or giving thanks.”

Right away Emily felt uneasy with her attitude. You are part of that family. What would you like to do differently to change the day? she asked herself. She decided she wanted to privately tell each person she was thankful to the Lord that they were her sister, niece, brother, or great-niece. When the day arrived, she expressed her thankfulness for them one by one, and they all felt loved. It wasn’t easy because it wasn’t normal conversation in her family, but she experienced joy as she shared her love for each of them.

“Let everything you say be good and helpful,” wrote the apostle Paul, “so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them” (EPH. 4:29 NLT). Our words of thanks can remind others of their value to us and to God. - ANNE CETAS

희생하는 믿음

주일 오후 나는 남편이 목회하고 있는 교회 근처에 있는 우리 집 정원에 앉아 있습니다. 페르시아 말로 하는 찬양과 경배의 음악소리가 공기를 통해 은은하게 퍼지며 내 귀에 들립니다. 런던에 있는 우리 교회에는 활기찬 이란인 신도들의 모임이 있는데, 그들이 박해받은 이야기를 나누거나, 원로 목사의 형제를 비롯하여 믿음 때문에 순교한 사람들의 이야기를 해줄 때면, 그리스도를 위한 그들의 열정에 우리는 겸손해집니다. 이 신실한 신도들은 처음으로 순교한 그리스도인인 스데반의 발자취를 따르고 있는 것입니다.

스데반은 초대교회에서 처음으로 임명 받은 지도자 중의 한 명으로, “큰 기사와 표적”(사도행전 6:8)으로 예루살렘에서 주목을 받은 후, 자신의 행동을 변호하기 위해 유대인 공회 앞에 세워졌습니다. 그는 그를 고소한 사람들의 굳은 마음을 기술하기에 앞서 먼저 믿음에 대해 열렬히 변호했습니다. 그러나 그들은 회개하는 대신 “격분해서 스데반에게 이를 갈았습니다”(7:54, 새번역). 그리고 그들을 위해 용서를 구하는 기도를 하는 스데반을 성 밖으로 끌어내어 돌로 쳐서 죽였습니다.

스데반과 현대 순교자들의 이야기는 우리가 예수 그리스도의 메시지를 전할 때 아주 잔인한 일을 당할 수도 있다는 것을 상기시켜 줍니다. 우리가 믿음 때문에 아직 박해 받아본 적이 없다면, 이 세상 곳곳에서 박해받는 교회들을 위해 기도합시다. 그리고 우리가 만일 박해를 받게 된다면, 우리를 위해 너무도 큰 고통을 받으신 주님께 충성할 수 있는 은혜를 입을 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Sacrificial Faith

It’s Sunday afternoon, and I’m sitting in the garden of our home, which is near the church where my husband is the minister. I hear wafts of praise and worship music floating through the air in the Farsi language. Our church in London hosts a vibrant Iranian congregation, and we feel humbled by their passion for Christ as they share some of their stories of persecution and tell of those, such as the senior pastor’s brother, who have been martyred for their faith. These faithful believers are following in the footsteps of the first Christian martyr, Stephen.

Stephen, one of the first appointed leaders in the early church, garnered attention in Jerusalem when he performed “great wonders and signs” (ACTS 6:8) and was brought before the Jewish authorities to defend his actions. He gave an impassioned defense of the faith before describing the hard-heartedness of his accusers. But instead of repenting, they were “furious and gnashed their teeth at him” (7:54). They dragged him from the city and stoned him to death—even as he prayed for their forgiveness.

The stories of Stephen and modern martyrs remind us that the message of Christ can be met with brutality. If we have never faced persecution for our faith, let’s pray for the persecuted church around the world. And may we, if and when tested, find grace to be found faithful to the One who suffered so much more for us. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

하늘을 쳐다보는 사람들

직장 문제와 집안 문제로 마음이 불편해진 맷은 산책을 하기로 마음먹었습니다. 봄날의 저녁 공기가 그를 손짓하며 부르고 있었습니다. 끝없는 하늘이 푸른색에서 검은색으로 깊어가고, 짙은 안개가 천천히 습지 위로 퍼져가고 있었습니다. 별들도 반짝이기 시작하며, 보름달이 동쪽에서 떠오르는 것을 알려주고 있었습니다. 그 순간 맷은 깊은 영적인 분위기에 사로잡혔습니다. 그는 생각했습니다. ‘그분이 계셔. 하나님이 계시다구. 하나님이 이걸 알고 계셔.’

밤하늘을 보면서 자연 외에는 아무것도 보지 못하는 사람들이 있고, 목성만큼이나 차갑고 멀리 떨어져 있는 신을 보는 사람들도 있습니다. 그러나 “땅 위 궁창에 앉으신” 그 하나님이 “수효대로 만상을 이끌어내시고 그들의 모든 이름을 부르십니다”(이사야 40:22,26). 하나님은 그분의 창조물을 친밀하게 알고 계십니다.

그분은 자기 백성들에게 이렇게 물으셨던 인격적인 하나님이시기도 합니다. “이스라엘아 네가 이르기를 내 길은 여호와께 숨겨졌으며 내 송사는 내 하나님에게서 벗어났다 하느냐.” 그들을 위해 아파하시면서, 하나님은 그분을 찾는 지혜를 그들에게 상기시켜주셨습니다. “너는 알지 못하였느냐 듣지 못하였느냐......피곤한 자에게는 능력을 주시며 무능한 자에게는 힘을 더하시나니”(27-29절).

우리는 하나님을 잊으려는 유혹에 쉽게 빠집니다. 저녁 산책으로 우리들의 문제가 사라지는 것은 아니지만, 우리는 쉼을 얻을 수 있고 하나님이 그분의 선하신 목적을 향해 항상 일하고 계심을 확신할 수 있습니다. 하나님이 말씀하십니다. “내가 여기 있다. 내가 너를 알고 있다.”

우리는 우주를 지탱하시는 하나님께서 우리 마음도 그렇게 하시도록 해야 한다.

Skywatcher

Unsettled by issues at work and at home, Matt decided to take a walk. The evening spring air beckoned. As the infinite sky deepened from blue to black, a thickening fog spilled slowly over the marsh. Stars began to glimmer, heralding the full moon rising in the east. The moment, for Matt, was deeply spiritual. He’s there, he thought. God is there, and He’s got this.

Some people look at the night sky and see nothing but nature. Others see a god as distant and cold as Jupiter. But the same God who “sits enthroned above the circle of the earth” also “brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name” (ISA. 40:22, 26). He knows His creation intimately.

It is this personal God who asked His people, “Why do you say, Israel, ‘My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God’?” Aching for them, God reminded them of the wisdom in seeking Him. “Do you not know? Have you not heard? . . . He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (VV. 27–29).

We are easily tempted to forget God. Our problems won’t disappear with an evening stroll, but we can find rest and certainty that God is always working toward His good purposes. “I’m here,” He says. “I’ve got you.” - TIM GUSTAFSON

경계 없는 사랑

1900년 중국에서 있었던 의화단 사건 기간 동안, 타이 위안 푸 집에 갇혀 있던 선교사들은 살아남기 위한 마지막 희망으로 그들의 죽음을 요구하는 군중들 속을 뚫고 달려가기로 결정했습니다. 그들은 가지고 있던 무기의 도움으로 급박한 위협에서 벗어날 수 있었습니다. 그러나 에디스 쿰즈는 부상당한 중국 학생 두 명이 빠져나오지 못한 것을 알고는, 그 위험지역으로 되돌아 달려갔습니다. 에디스는 한 명은 구했지만, 두 번째 학생을 구하기 위해 되돌아가는 길에 넘어져 죽임을 당하고 말았습니다.

한편, 신차우 구역에 있던 선교사들은 탈출하여 그들의 중국 친구인 호 취엔 퀘이와 함께 시골에 숨어 있었습니다. 그러나 호 취엔 퀘이는 숨어 있는 친구들을 위해 도주 경로를 정탐하다가 붙잡혀서, 친구들이 어디에 있는지 밝히기를 거부하여 순교자가 되었습니다.

에디스 쿰즈와 취엔 퀘이의 삶속에서 우리는 문화와 국가를 초월한 사랑을 봅니다. 그들의 희생은 우리 구주의 더 큰 은혜와 사랑을 상기시켜줍니다.

예수님은 체포와 뒤이은 사형집행을 기다리면서 “아버지여 만일 아버지의 뜻이거든 이 잔을 내게서 옮기시옵소서”라고 간절하게 기도하셨습니다. 하지만 주님은 용기와 사랑, 희생의 결연한 본보기로 이렇게 기도를 마무리하셨습니다. “그러나 내 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 되기를 원하나이다”(누가복음 22:42). 예수님의 죽음과 부활로 우리의 영원한 삶이 가능케 되었습니다.

Love Without Borders

During the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900, missionaries trapped in a home in T’ai Yüan Fu decided their only hope for survival rested on running through the crowd that was calling for their deaths. Aided by weapons they held, they escaped the immediate threat. However, Edith Coombs, noticing that two of her injured Chinese students had not escaped, raced back into danger. She rescued one, but stumbled on her return trip for the second student and was killed.

Meanwhile, missionaries in Hsin Chou district had escaped and were hiding in the countryside, accompanied by their Chinese friend Ho Tsuen Kwei. But he was captured while scouting an escape route for his friends in hiding and was martyred for refusing to reveal their location.

In the lives of Edith Coombs and Tsuen Kwei we see a love that rises above cultural or national character. Their sacrifice reminds us of the greater grace and love of our Savior.

As Jesus awaited His arrest and subsequent execution, He prayed earnestly, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me.” But He concluded that request with this resolute example of courage, love, and sacrifice: “Yet not my will, but yours be done” (LUKE 22:42). His death and resurrection made our eternal lives possible. - RANDY KILGORE
