변화를 선택
우리 아들에게 조그만 로봇이 생기자 아들은 간단한 명령을 수행할 수 있도록 프로그램 하는 것을 재미있어 했습니다. 그는 로봇이 앞으로 가고, 멈추고, 또 되돌아가게 할 수도 있었습니다. 심지어 그는 로봇이 삑 소리를 내게 하기도 하고 또 녹음된 소리를 재생시키게 하기도 했습니다. 로봇은 우리 아들이 하라는 대로만 했습니다. 자진해서 웃는다든가 지시하지 않은 방향으로 벗어나는 일은 전혀 없었습니다. 로봇은 아무런 선택권도 없었습니다.
하나님은 사람을 창조하실 때 로봇을 만드신 것이 아닙니다. 하나님은 우리를 하나님의 형상으로 만드셨고, 그것은 우리가 생각할 수 있고 추론할 수 있으며 결정을 내릴 수 있다는 것을 의미합니다. 우리는 옳고 그른 것 중에 선택할 수 있습니다. 설사 우리가 하나님의 말씀에 불복종하는 습관이 생겼다 해도, 우리는 삶의 방향을 다시 바꾸기로 결심할 수 있습니다.
고대 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님과의 관계에 문제가 생겼을 때 하나님은 에스겔 선지자를 통해 백성들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “너희는 돌이켜 회개하고 모든 죄에서 떠날지어다 그러한즉 그것이 너희에게 죄악의 걸림돌이 되지 아니하리라......마음과 영을 새롭게 할지어다”(에스겔 18:30-31).
이런 변화는 성령의 능력을 힘입어 단 한 가지를 선택하는 것만으로도 시작될 수 있습니다(로마서 8:13). 그것은 아주 중요한 순간에 ‘아니오’라고 말하는 것일 수도 있고, 더 이상 남을 헐뜯지 않고, 더 이상 욕심내지 않으며, 더 이상 시기하지 않고, 더 이상 _______ 하지 않는 (빈 곳을 채워보십시오) 것일 수도 있습니다. 예수님을 안다면 당신은 죄의 노예가 아닙니다. 당신은 변화될 것을 선택할 수 있으며, 하나님의 은혜로 이 개인적인 변혁이 오늘 시작될 수 있습니다.

Choosing to Change
When my son acquired a small robot, he had fun programming it to perform simple tasks. He could make it move forward, stop, and then retrace its steps. He could even get it to beep and replay recorded noises. The robot did exactly what my son told it to do. It never laughed spontaneously or veered off in an unplanned direction. It had no choice.
When God created humans, He didn’t make robots. God made us in His image, and this means we can think, reason, and make decisions. We’re able to choose between right and wrong. Even if we have made a habit of disobeying God, we can decide to redirect our lives.
When the ancient Israelites found themselves in trouble with God, He spoke to them through the prophet Ezekiel. Ezekiel said, “Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. . . . Get a new heart and a new spirit” (EZEK. 18:30–31).
This kind of change can begin with just one choice, empowered by the Holy Spirit (ROM. 8:13). It might mean saying no at a critical moment. No more gossip. No more greed. No more jealousy. No more ___________ (You fill in the blank.) If you know Jesus, you’re not a slave to sin. 하나님은 예레미야에게 “내가 너를 누구에게 보내든지 너는 가며 내가 네게 무엇을 명령하든지 너는 말할지니라”(예레미야 1:7) 라고 말씀하셨고, 예수님도 제자들에게 “내가 너희를 보냄이 양을 이리 가운데로 보냄과 같도다”(마태복음 10:16)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그렇습니다. 우리는 위협이나 역경을 만날 수 있고, 고통까지 당할
수 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리와 함께 계신다는 것을 확신시켜 주십니다. 하나님은 예레미야에게 “내가 너와 함께 하리라”(예레미야 1:8)라고 말씀하셨고, 예수님도 제자들에게 “내가 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라”(마태복음 28:20)라고 확신시켜 주셨습니다.

I Am With You
When I served as an intern for a Christian magazine, I wrote a story about a person who had become a Christian. In a dramatic change, he said goodbye to his former life and embraced his new Master: Jesus. A few days after the magazine hit the street, an anonymous caller threatened, “Be careful, Darmani. We are watching you! Your life is in danger in this country if you write such stories.”
That was not the only time I have been threatened for pointing people to Christ. On one occasion a man told me to vanish with the tract I was giving him or else! In both cases, I cowered. But these were only verbal threats. Many Christians have had threats carried out against them. In some cases simply living a godly lifestyle attracts mistreatment from people.
The Lord told Jeremiah, “You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you” (JER. 1:7), and Jesus told His disciples, “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves” (MATT. 10:16). Yes, we may encounter threats, hardships, and even pain. But God assures us of His presence. “I am with you,” He told Jeremiah (JER. 1:8), and Jesus assured His followers, “I am with you always” (MATT. 28:20.
Whatever struggles we face in our attempt to live for the Lord, we can trust in the Lord’s presence. - LAWRENCE DARMANI

몇 년 전 남가주 경제가 침체되었을 때 밥 존슨 목사는 어려움도 보았지만 기회도 함께 보았습니다. 그래서 그는 그가 사는 도시의 시장을 만나 “우리 교회가 어떻게 도와드릴 수 있을까요?”라고 물어보았습니다. 시장은 그 말을 듣고 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 사람들은 보통 도움을 청하러 오는데, 이 목회자는 시장에게 전 교인의 봉사를 제안하고 있었기 때문입니다.
시장과 목사는 함께 몇 가지 현안에 중점적으로 대처하기 위한 계획을 세웠습니다. 그 지역에는 지난 1년간 한 사람도 찾지 않았던 노인이 2만 명 이상 있었고, 가족이
필요한 수백 명의 고아가 있었습니다. 그리고 많은 아이들이 학교수업을 제대로 따라가기 위해 보충수업이 필요한 상황이었습니다.

예수님은 제자들에게 주님을 신실히 따르는 자들에게 훗날에 이렇게 말씀하실 거라고 하셨습니다. “내 아버지께 복 받을 자들이여...... 너희를 위하여 예비된 나라를 상속 받으라”(마태복음 25:34). 주님은 또한 그들이 받게 될 상에 놀랄 거라고 하시면서, 그때 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하실 거라고 하셨습니다. “너희가 여기 내 형제 자매 가운데 지극히 보잘 것 없는 사람 하나에게 한 것이 곧 내게 한 것이다”(40절 새번역).
하나님이 우리에게 주신 시간과 사랑과 자원을 우리가 너그럽게 베풀 때, 하나님 나라를 위한 일이 이루어집니다.

My Brothers and Sisters
Several years ago when the Southern California economy took a downturn, Pastor Bob Johnson saw not only difficulty but also opportunity. So he scheduled a meeting
with the mayor of his city and asked, “What can our church do to help you?” The mayor was astonished. People usually came to him for help. Here was a minister offering him the services of an entire congregation.
Together the mayor and pastor came up with a plan to address several pressing needs. In their county alone, more than 20,000 seniors had gone the previous year without a single visitor. Hundreds of foster children needed families. And many other kids needed tutoring to help them succeed in school.
Some of those needs could be addressed without much financial investment, but they all required time and interest. And that’s what the church had to give.
Jesus told His disciples about a future day in which He would say to His faithful followers, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance” (MATT. 25:34). He also said they would express surprise at their reward. Then He would tell them, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” V. 40.
God’s kingdom work gets done when we give generously of the time, love, and resources He has provided us. - TIM GUSTAFSON

무궁한 사랑
얼마 전 여행 중 비행기가 약간 거칠게 착륙하는 바람에 승객들이 통로 좌우로 심하게 떠밀린 적이 있었습니다. 어떤 승객들은 눈에 띄게 떨고 있었지만, 그런 긴장감은 내 뒤에 앉아있던 두 여자아이가 “와! 한 번 더 했으면 좋겠다!”라고 말하자 금방 가라앉았습니다.
아이들은 새로운 모험을 잘 받아들이고, 인생을 겸손하면서도 천진난만한 눈으로 경이롭게 바라봅니다. 아마도 이것이 부분적으로는 예수님이 우리에게 “하나님 나라를 어린아이와 같이 받들어야”(마가복음 10:15)한다고 말씀하신 이유일 것입니다.
인생에는 원래 어려운 일들과 가슴 아픈 일들이 있게 마련입니다. “눈물의 예언자” 라고 불리는 예레미야보다 이것을 더 잘 알고 있는 사람도 별로 없었습니다. 그러나 고통 중에 있는 예레미야에게 하나님은 놀라운 사실로 그를 격려해주셨습니다. “여호와의 인자와 긍휼이 무궁하시므로 우리가 진멸되지 아니함이니이다 이것들이 아침마다 새로우니 주의 성실하심이 크시도소이다”(예레미야애가 3:22-23).
하나님의 신선한 자비는 우리 삶의 어느 순간에도 찾아올 수 있습니다. 하나님의 자비는 항상 있기에, 우리가 하나님만이 하실 수 있는 일을 바라보고 기다리면서 어린아이 같은 마음으로 기대하며 살아갈 때 그 자비를 발견할 수 있습니다. 예레미야는 하나님의 선하심이 우리가 당장 마주친 환경에 의해 정해지지 않는다는 것과, 주님의 신실하심은 인생의 거친 시련보다 더 위대하다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 오늘 하나님의 신선한 자비를 기대하십시오.

On a recent airline flight the landing was a little rough, jostling us left and right down the runway. Some of the passengers were visibly nervous, but the tension broke
when two little girls sitting behind me cheered, “Yeah! Let’s do that again!”
Children are open to new adventures and see life with humble, wide-eyed wonder. Perhaps this is part of what Jesus had in mind when He said that we have to “receive the kingdom of God like a little child” (MARK 10:15).
Life has its challenges and heartaches. Few knew this better than Jeremiah, who is also called “the weeping prophet.” But in the middle of Jeremiah’s troubles, God encouraged him with an amazing truth: “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning” (LAM. 3:22-23 NLT).
God’s fresh mercies can break into our lives at any moment. They are always there, and we see them when we live with childlike expectation—watching and waiting for what only He can do. Jeremiah knew that God’s goodness is not defined only by our immediate circumstances and that His faithfulness is greater than life’s rough places. Look for God’s fresh mercies today. - JAMES BANKS

나는 반항의 시대인 1960년대에 자라나면서 종교를 등졌습니다. 계속 교회에 나가긴 했지만 20대 초반에 큰 사고를 겪고 나서야 진정한 믿음이 생겼습니다. 그때 이후로 나는 우리를 위한 예수님의 사랑에 대해 다른 사람들과 나누며 내 삶을 보냈습니다. 정말 굉장한 여정이었습니다.
분명히 “여정”이라는 말은 이 깨어진 세상에서의 삶을 의미합니다. 그 길을 가며 우리는 산과 계곡, 강과 평야, 복잡한 고속도로와 한적한 길을 만나고, 잘될 때와 힘들 때, 기쁨과 슬픔, 다툼과 상실, 고민과 외로움을 마주하게 됩니다. 우리는 앞길을 미리 내다볼 수 없어서 우리가 바라는 대로가 아닌, 그저 다가오는 대로 감당해야 합니다.
하지만 예수님을 따르는 사람들은 이 여정을 결코 홀로 감당하지 않습니다. 성경은 하나님이 계속 함께 하신다고 우리에게 상기시켜줍니다. 우리가 어디를 가든 그곳에 하나님이 계십니다(시편 139:7-12). 하나님은 결코 우리를 떠나거나 저버리지 않으십니다(신명기 31:6; 히브리서 13:5). 예수님은 성령님을 보내주시겠다고 약속하신 후에 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 너희를 고아와 같이 버려두지 아니하고 너희에게로 오리라”(요한복음 14:18).
하나님은 영원토록 변함없이 함께 하시겠다고 우리에게 약속하셨습니다. 그래서 우리는 우리의 여정 중에 만나는 여러 도전과 기회들을 자신 있게 감당할 수 있습니다.

Your Journey
I grew up in the rebellious 1960s and turned my back on religion. I had attended church all my life but didn’t come to faith until my early twenties after a terrible accident. Since that time, I have spent my adult years telling others of Jesus’s love for us. It has been a journey.
Certainly “a journey” describes life in this broken world. On the way we encounter mountains and valleys, rivers and plains, crowded highways and lonely roads—highs and lows, joys and sorrows, conflict and loss, heartache and solitude. We can’t see the road ahead, so we must take it as it comes, not as we wish it would be.
The follower of Christ, however, never faces this journey alone. The Scriptures remind us of the constant presence of God. There is nowhere we can go that He is not there (PS. 139:7-12). He will never leave us or forsake us (DEUT. 31:6; HEB. 13:5). Jesus, after promising to send the Holy Spirit, told His disciples, “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you”(JOHN 14:18).
The challenges and opportunities we face on our journey can be met confidently, for God has promised us His never-failing presence. - BILL CROWDER

‘태양이 머무는 곳 ’이라는 책은 에드워드 애비가 유타 주의 지금은 아치스 국립공원이라 불리는 곳에서 공원 관리인으로 보낸 많은 여름날들을 기록한 그의 일기입니다.
애비의 발랄한 문체와 미국 남서부를 생동감 있게 묘사한 것만으로도 이 책은 읽어볼 만한 가치가 있습니다.
하지만 애비는 무신론자였기에 그의 모든 예술적인 기교에도 불구하고 그가 본 표면적인 아름다움 그 이상은 볼 수 없었습니다. 얼마나 서글픈 일인지요! 그는 아름다움을 찬미하며 그의 인생 전부를 보냈지만, 그 모든 것의 핵심을 놓쳤던 것입니다.
대부분의 고대인들에게는 전설이나 신화, 노래 등으로 덧입혀진 세상의 기원에 대한 이론들이 있었습니다. 하지만 이스라엘 사람들이 갖고 있었던 창조에 관한 이야기는 매우 독특했습니다. 그것은 바로 하나님께서 우리의 즐거움과 아이 같은 기쁨을 위해 아름다움을 창조하셨다는 것입니다. 하나님은 온 우주를 계획하시고 말씀으로 창조하신 후 “아름답다”고 하셨습니다. (히브리어로 ‘좋다’는 말은 ‘아름답다’를 의미하기도 합니다.) 그러고 나서 하나님은 낙원을 만드시고 사랑 가득히 말씀으로 우리를 창조하신 후, 우리를 에덴동산에 거하게 하시고 우리에게 “즐겨라!”라고 말씀하셨습니다.
어떤 이들은 창조주의 좋은 선물인 주변의 모든 아름다움을 보고 즐기긴 하지만, 창조주인 하나님을 경배하지도, 감사도 드리지 않습니다. 하나님에 대한 어리석은 생각들로 말미암아 그들의 마음이 어둡고 어지럽혀져 있기 때문입니다(로마서 1:21).
하지만 다른 어떤 이들은 아름다움을 보며 “하나님, 감사합니다” 라고 말하면서 하나님의 빛으로 나아갑니다.

Desert Solitaire
Desert Solitaire is Edward Abbey’s personal history of his summers as a park ranger in what is now called Arches National Park in Utah. The book is worth reading if only for Abbey’s bright language and vivid descriptions of the US Southwest.
But Abbey, for all his artistry, was an atheist who could see nothing beyond the surface of the beauty he enjoyed. How sad! He lived his entire life in praise of beauty and missed the point of it all.
Most ancient peoples had theories of origins enshrouded in legend, myth, and song. But Israel’s story of creation was unique: It told of a God who created beauty for our enjoyment and childlike delight. God thought up the cosmos, spoke it into being and pronounced it “beautiful.” (The Hebrew word for good also signifies beauty.) Then, having created a paradise, God in love spoke us into being, placed us in Eden, and told us, “Enjoy!”
Some see and enjoy the beauty of the Creator’s good gifts all around them, but don’t “worship him as God or even give him thanks.” They “think up foolish ideas of what God [is] like. As a result, their minds become dark and confused” (ROM. 1:21 NLT).
Others see beauty, say “Thank You, God,” and step into His light. - DAVID ROPER
And God saw that it was good.

여러 문화권에서는 개인적인 슬픈 일을 당했거나 국가적으로 큰 재앙을 맞았을 때, 큰 소리로 울고, 통곡하고, 옷을 찢는 것이 애통을 표현하는 일반적인 모습입니다. 구약성경의 이스라엘 백성들도 주님으로부터 멀어졌던 것을 깊이 한탄하고 회개하며 이 같은 외형적인 행동들을 했습니다.
진심에서 우러나오는 회개라면 밖으로 그렇게 드러내는 것이 매우 효과적인 과정일 수도 있습니다. 그러나 내적으로 진지하게 하나님께 반응하는 것이 아니라면 그것은
믿음의 공동체 안 일지라도 단지 몸짓에 지나지 않을 것입니다.
메뚜기 재앙으로 유다 땅이 황폐화된 후, 하나님은 요엘 선지자를 통해 백성들에게 더 큰 심판을 피하려면 진심으로 회개하라고 말씀하셨습니다. “여호와의 말씀에 너희는 이제라도 금식하고 울며 애통하고 마음을 다하여 내게로 돌아오라 하셨나니”(요엘 2:12).
그때 요엘은 백성들에게 마음 깊은 곳으로부터 회개할 것을 요구했습니다. “너희는 옷을 찢지 말고 마음을 찢고 너희 하나님 여호와께로 돌아올지어다 그는 은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디 하시며 인애가 크시사 뜻을 돌이켜 재앙을 내리지 아니하시나니” (13절). 진정한 회개는 마음으로부터 나옵니다.
주님은 우리가 죄를 고백하고 용서받아, 우리가 온 마음과 뜻과 정성과 힘을 다해 주님을 사랑하고 섬길 수 있기를 간절히 바라십니다.

From the Heart
In many cultures, loud weeping, wailing, and the tearing of
clothing are accepted ways of lamenting personal sorrow or
a great national calamity. For the people of Old Testament
Israel, similar outward actions expressed deep mourning
and repentance for turning away from the Lord.
An outward demonstration of repentance
can be a powerful process when it
comes from our heart. But without a sincere
inward response to God, we may
simply be going through the motions,
even in our communities of faith.
After a plague of locusts devastated
the land of Judah, God, through the
prophet Joel, called the people to sincere
repentance to avoid His further judgment.
“ ‘Even now,’ declares the Lord,
‘return to me with all your heart, with
fasting and weeping and mourning’” (JOEL 2:12).
Then Joel called for a response from deep inside: “Rend
your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your
God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and
abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity” V. 13.
True repentance comes from the heart.
The Lord longs for us to confess our sins to Him and
receive His forgiveness so we can love and serve Him with all
our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Whatever you need to tell the Lord today, just say it—from

꼭 해야 하나요?
조이는 유치부 행사를 기도로 시작하고 나서 아이들과 함께 찬양했습니다. 조이가 아론 선생님을 소개하고 나서 다시 기도하자 여섯 살 난 에마뉴엘은 의자에서 몸을 비비꼬기 시작했습니다. 아론은 기도하고 나서 이야기를 시작한 후 다시 기도로 끝냈습니다. 그러자 에마뉴엘은 “네 번이나 기도했어요! 난 그렇게 오래 가만히 앉아있을 수 없어요!” 라고 불평을 했습니다.
혹시 에마뉴엘이 힘들었겠다고 생각 된다면, “쉬지 말고 기도하라” 혹은 항상 기도하는 마음으로 있으라는 데살로니가전서 5장 17절 말씀을 보십시오. 우리 어른들 중에도 기도가 지루하다고 여기는 사람이 있습니다. 아마도 그것은 우리가 무슨 말을 해야 할지를 모르거나, 기도가 하나님 아버지와의 대화라는 것을 모르기 때문일 것입니다.
17세기에 프랑수아 페넬롱이 기도에 관해 썼던 글이 나에게 도움을 주었습니다. “사랑하는 친구에게 마음속의 즐겁고 힘든 모든 이야기를 털어놓는 것처럼, 당신 마음속의 모든 것을 하나님께 말하십시오. 어려움을 아뢰면 하나님께서 위로를 주시고, 기쁨을 아뢰면 하나님께서 들뜬 마음을 가라앉혀 주시며, 바라는 것들을 아뢰면 그것들을 정결하게 해주실 것입니다.” 그는 계속 말합니다. “유혹 받음을 하나님께 고하면 그것들로부터 보호해주실 것이며, 마음의 상처를 하나님께 보여주면 치유해주실 것입니다...... 이렇게 당신의 약함이나 필요함, 어려움들을 모두 쏟아낸다면 하나님께 무슨 말을 해야 할지 모르는 일은 없을 것입니다.”
우리가 하나님과 더욱 친밀해져서, 우리가 그분과 더 많은 시간을 함께 보내기를 바랄 수 있게 해주소서.

혹시 에마뉴엘이 힘들었겠다고 생각 된다면, “쉬지 말고 기도하라” 혹은 항상 기도하는 마음으로 있으라는 데살로니가전서 5장 17절 말씀을 보십시오. 우리 어른들 중에도 기도가 지루하다고 여기는 사람이 있습니다. 아마도 그것은 우리가 무슨 말을 해야 할지를 모르거나, 기도가 하나님 아버지와의 대화라는 것을 모르기 때문일 것입니다.
17세기에 프랑수아 페넬롱이 기도에 관해 썼던 글이 나에게 도움을 주었습니다. “사랑하는 친구에게 마음속의 즐겁고 힘든 모든 이야기를 털어놓는 것처럼, 당신 마음속의 모든 것을 하나님께 말하십시오. 어려움을 아뢰면 하나님께서 위로를 주시고, 기쁨을 아뢰면 하나님께서 들뜬 마음을 가라앉혀 주시며, 바라는 것들을 아뢰면 그것들을 정결하게 해주실 것입니다.” 그는 계속 말합니다. “유혹 받음을 하나님께 고하면 그것들로부터 보호해주실 것이며, 마음의 상처를 하나님께 보여주면 치유해주실 것입니다...... 이렇게 당신의 약함이나 필요함, 어려움들을 모두 쏟아낸다면 하나님께 무슨 말을 해야 할지 모르는 일은 없을 것입니다.”
우리가 하나님과 더욱 친밀해져서, 우리가 그분과 더 많은 시간을 함께 보내기를 바랄 수 있게 해주소서.

Do We Have To?
Joie started the children’s program with prayer, then sang with the kids. Six-year-old Emmanuel squirmed in his seat when she prayed again after introducing Aaron, the teacher. Then Aaron began and ended his talk with prayer. Emmanuel complained: “That’s four prayers! I can’t sit still that long!”
If you think Emmanuel’s challenge is difficult, look at 1 Thessalonians 5:17: “Pray continually” or always be in a spirit of prayer. Even some of us adults can find
prayer to be boring. Maybe that’s because we don’t know what to say or don’t understand that prayer is a conversation with our Father.
Back in the seventeenth century, François Fénelon wrote some words about prayer that have helped me: “Tell God all that is in your heart, as one unloads one’s heart, its pleasures and its pains, to a dear friend. Tell Him your troubles, that He may comfort you; tell Him your joys, that He may sober them; tell Him your longings, that He may purify them.” He continued, “Talk to Him of your temptations, that He may shield you from them: show Him the wounds of your heart, that He may heal them . . . . If you thus pour out all your weaknesses, needs, troubles, there will be no lack of what to say.”

우리 아들은 책 읽기를 좋아합니다. 학교에서 읽으라고 하는 것보다 더 많은 책을 읽으면 아들은 상장을 받습니다. 그런 작은 격려가 아들이 책을 계속 잘 읽도록 동기를 부여합니다.
바울은 데살로니가 교인들에게 서신을 보내어 상이 아닌 격려의 말로 그들을 권면했습니다. “형제자매 여러분, 끝으로 우리는 주 예수 안에서 여러분에게 부탁하며 권면합니다. 여러분은 어떻게 살아야 하며, 어떻게 하나님을 기쁘게 해 드려야 할 것인지를 우리에게서 배운 대로 하고 있으니, 더욱 그렇게 하십시오”(데살로니가전서 4:1, 새번역). 그들의 삶을 통해 하나님을 기쁘시게 하고 있었던 데살로니가 교인들에게 바울은 멈추지 말고 더욱더 주님을 위해 살라고 격려했습니다.
아마 당신과 나도 하나님 아버지를 알고 사랑하고 기쁘시게 하는 일에 오늘 최선을 다하고 있을 것입니다. 우리도 바울의 말을 격려 삼아 믿음 안에서 계속 정진하도록 합시다.
그런데 한 걸음 더 나아가 봅시다. 오늘 우리가 바울의 말로 누구를 격려할 수 있을까요? 주님을 따르고 기쁘시게 하는데 열심인 누군가가 마음속에 떠오릅니까? 메모를 전해주거나 전화를 해서 주님과의 믿음의 여정을 계속 잘 해나가라고 격려해주십시오. 당신이 건네는 말이 그들이 예수님을 계속 따르고 섬기는 데 있어 꼭 필요한 말이 될 수 있습니다.

Keep Up the Good Work
My son loves to read. If he reads more books than what is required at school, he receives an award certificate. That bit of encouragement motivates him to keep up the good work.
When Paul wrote to the Thessalonians he motivated them not with an award but with words of encouragement. He said, “Brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more” (1 THESS. 4:1). These Christians were pleasing God through their lives, and Paul encouraged them to continue to live more and more for Him.
Maybe today you and I are giving our best to know and love and please our Father. Let’s take Paul’s words as an incentive to continue on in our faith.
But let’s go one step further. Who might we encourage today with Paul’s words? Does someone come to mind who is diligent in following the Lord and seeking to please Him? Write a note or make a phone call and urge this person to keep on in their faith journey with Him. What you say may be just what they need to continue following and serving Jesus. - KEILA OCHOA

오클라호마 주에 사는 케이드 포프라는 12살 된 소년은 편지 32통을 손으로 써서 미국프로미식축구연맹(NFL)의 각 팀 대표 한명 한명에게 보냈습니다. 케이드는 이렇게 썼습니다. “우리 가족은 축구를 정말 좋아해요. 판타지 축구게임 (역자 주: 자신이 원하는 선수들을 뽑아 팀을 만들고 그 선수들이 실제 경기에서 올리는 성적을 대입시켜가며 겨루는 가상 게임)을 하고 주말마다 경기도 보고 있어요...... 평생 응원하고 싶은 NFL 팀을 뽑을 준비도 되어 있고요!”
캐롤라이나 팬더스의 구단주 제리 리처드슨 또한 직접 손으로 답장을 써서 보냈습니다. 첫 줄은 이렇게 시작했습니다. “우리 팀이 너에게 뽑힌다면 정말 큰 영광이겠구나. 그러면 너를 자랑스럽게 해줄게.” 리처드슨은 더 나아가 팀의 몇몇 선수들도 그에게 추천해주었습니다. 그의 답장은 친절하고 인정이 담겼을 뿐 아니라 케이드가 받은 유일한 답장이었습니다. 당연히 케이드는 캐롤라이나 팬더스의 충실한 팬이 되었습니다.

A Fan for Life
Cade Pope, a 12-year-old boy from Oklahoma, mailed out 32 handwritten letters—one to each executive in charge of a National Football League (NFL) team in the US. Cade wrote, “My family and I love football. We play fantasy football and watch [the] games every weekend. . . . I am ready to pick an NFL team to cheer on for a lifetime!”
Jerry Richardson, owner of the Carolina Panthers football team, responded with a handwritten note of his own. The first line read: “We would be honored if our [team] became your team. We would make you proud.” Richardson went on to commend some of his players. His letter was not only personal and kindhearted—it was the only response that Cade received. Not surprisingly, Cade became a loyal fan of the Carolina Panthers.
In Psalm 86, David spoke about his allegiance to the one true God. He said, “When I am in distress, I call to you, because you answer me. Among the gods there is none like you, Lord” (VV. 7–8). Our devotion to God is born from His character and His care for us. He is the one who answers our prayers, guides us by His Spirit, and saves us through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. He deserves our lifelong loyalty. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT
