사랑으로 이끌기

오스왈드 샌더스는 그의 저서 ‘영적인 리더십’에서 ‘요령’과 ‘외교술’의 가치와 중요성에 대해 살펴보고 있습니다. 그는 이렇게 말합니다. “이 두 단어를 합쳐보면, 공격적이지 않고 원칙을 타협하지도 않으면서 서로 반대되는 두 관점을 화해시키는 기술이 떠오릅니다.”

바울은 로마에서 옥에 갇혀 있는 동안, 주인 빌레몬으로부터 도망친 오네시모라는 이름을 가진 노예의 영적 스승이자 친한 친구가 되었습니다. 골로새교회의 리더인 빌레몬에게 오네시모를 그리스도 안에서 형제로 받아달라고 부탁하는 편지를 썼을 때, 바울은 요령과 외교술의 본을 보여주었습니다. “내가 그리스도 안에서 아주 담대하게 네게 마땅한 일로 명할 수도 있으나 도리어 사랑으로써 간구하노라......[오네시모는] 이 후로는 종과 같이 대하지 아니하고 종 이상으로 곧 사랑 받는 형제로 둘 자라 내게 특별히 그러하거든 하물며 육신과 주 안에서 상관된 네게랴” (빌레몬서 8-9,16절).

초대교회에서 존경받던 지도자 바울은 예수님을 따르는 이들에게 자주 분명하게 지시했습니다. 그러나 이 경우에는 빌레몬에게 평등과 우정, 그리고 사랑을 근거로 간청하였습니다. “다만 네 승낙이 없이는 내가 아무 것도 하기를 원하지 아니하노니 이는 너의 선한 일이 억지 같이 되지 아니하고 자의로 되게 하려 함이라”(14절).

우리의 모든 관계 속에서, 우리가 사랑하는 마음으로 화합과 원칙을 유지할 수 있게 되기를 소원합니다.

Leading with Love

In his book Spiritual Leadership, J. Oswald Sanders explores the qualities and the importance of tact and diplomacy. “Combining these two words,” Sanders says, “the idea emerges of skill in reconciling opposing viewpoints without giving offense and without compromising principle.”

During Paul’s imprisonment in Rome, he became the spiritual mentor and close friend of a runaway slave named Onesimus, whose owner was Philemon. When Paul wrote to Philemon, a leader of the church in Colossae, asking him to receive Onesimus as a brother in Christ, he exemplified tact and diplomacy. “Although in Christ I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to do, yet I prefer to appeal to you on the basis of love. . . . [Onesimus] is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a fellow man and as a brother in the Lord” (PHILEM. 8–9, 16).

Paul, a respected leader of the early church, often gave clear commands to the followers of Jesus. In this case, though, he appealed to Philemon on the basis of equality, friendship, and love. “I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do would not seem forced but would be voluntary” (V. 14).

주의하고 깨어있음

내 책상은 동네가 내다보이는 창가에 있어서, 나는 그 좋은 자리에서 가까운 나무에 앉아있는 새를 볼 수 있는 특혜를 누리고 있습니다. 어떤 새들은 방충망에 잡힌 벌레를 먹으려고 창문으로 날아들기도 합니다.

새들은 혹시 근처에 어떤 위험이 있는지 주위를 둘러보면서 열심히 귀를 기울여 확인합니다. 전혀 위험하지 않다는 것이 확실할 때에만 자리를 잡고 먹습니다. 그리고 나서도, 새들은 몇 초마다
한 번씩 주위를 점검합니다.

이 새들이 보여주는 경계심을 보면서 성경에서도 그리스도인으로서 우리가 경계하고 살아야한다고 가르치고 있는 것을 떠올려 봅니다. 이 세상은 많은 유혹으로 가득 차 있어서, 우리는 항상 깨어있어 위험한 것들에 대해 잊지 말아야 합니다. 아담과 하와 같이, 우리도 이 세상의 것들을 “먹음직도 하고 보암직도 하고 지혜롭게 할 만큼 탐스럽게”(창세기 3:6) 보이도록 만드는 유혹에 쉽게 얽매이게 됩니다.

바울은 “깨어 믿음에 굳게 서서 남자답게 강건하라”(고린도전서 16:13)고 훈계하였습니다. 그리고 베드로도 “근신하라 깨어라 너희 대적 마귀가 우는 사자 같이 두루 다니며 삼킬 자를 찾나니”(베드로전서 5:8) 라고 경고하였습니다.

우리는 일용할 양식을 위해 일할 때, 우리를 소멸시키기 시작할 수도 있는 것들에 대해 경계하고 있습니까? 하나님을 신뢰했더라면 좋았을 것을 하는 바람을 남기게 될지도 모를 자신만만함이나 고집 센 마음을 경계하고 있습니까?

Watchful and Alert

My desk sits close to a window that opens into our neighborhood. From that vantage point I’m privileged to watch birds perch on the trees nearby. Some come to the window to eat insects trapped in the screen.

The birds check their immediate surroundings for any danger, listening attentively as they look about them. Only when they are satisfied that there is no danger do they settle down to feed. Even then, they pause every few seconds to scan the area.

The vigilance these birds demonstrate reminds me that the Bible teaches us to practice vigilance as Christians. Our world is full of temptations, and we need to remain constantly alert and not forget about the dangers. Like Adam and Eve, we easily get entangled in attractions that make the things of this world seem “good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom” (GEN. 3:6).

“Be on your guard,” Paul admonished, “stand firm in the faith” (1 COR. 16:13). And Peter cautioned, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 PETER 5:8).

As we work for our own daily bread, are we alert to what could start consuming us? Are we watching for any hint of self-confidence or willfulness that could leave us wishing we had trusted our God? - LAWRENCE DARMANI

내게로 달려와

아이들을 데리고 동네 공원을 산책하던 중, 줄에 묶여 있지 않은 개 두 마리와 마주치게 되었습니다. 그 중 한 마리가 우리 아들을 위협하기 시작하는데도 개 주인은 신경 쓰지 않는 것 같았습니다. 우리 아들은 개를 쫓아버리려 했지만, 개는 아들을 점점 더 괴롭혔습니다.

결국 아들이 겁에 질려 몇 미터 거리를 두고 달아나자 개는 계속 뒤쫓아 갔습니다. 내가 “내게로 달려와!”라고 소리 지를 때까지 이런 상황이 계속되었습니다. 아들이 되돌아 뛰어와서 진정하자, 개도 마침내 다른 곳에서 장난을 치려는 듯 가버렸습니다.

우리 삶에서도 하나님이 “내게로 달려와!”하고 우리를 부르실 때가 있습니다. 고통스러운 일이 우리 뒤를 바짝 따라와서, 우리가 더 빨리 더 멀리 가려고 하면 할수록 우리를 더 가까이 쫓아 옵니다. 우리는 그것을 떨쳐버릴 수 없습니다. 우리는 너무 두려워서, 돌아서서 우리 힘으로 어려움에 맞서지 못합니다. 그러나 실제로 우리는 혼자가 아닙니다. 우리를 기꺼이 도우시고 위로해주실 하나님이 그곳에 계십니다. 우리가 할 일은 우리를 위협하는 것으로부터 돌아서서, 방향을 바꾸어 하나님 쪽으로 가는 것뿐입니다. 성경은 말합니다. “여호와의 이름은 견고한 망대라 의인은 그리로 달려가서 안전함을 얻느니라”

Run to Me

During a walk at a local park, my children and I encountered a couple of unleashed dogs. Their owner didn’t seem to notice that one of them had begun to intimidate my son. My son tried to shoo the dog away, but the animal only became more intent on bothering him.

Eventually, my son panicked. He bolted several yards into the distance, but the dog pursued him. The chase continued until I yelled, “Run to me!” My son doubled back, calmed down, and the dog finally decided to make mischief somewhere else.

There are moments in our lives when God calls to us and says, “Run to Me!” Something troubling is on our heels. The faster and farther we go, the more closely it pursues us. We can’t shake it. We’re too afraid to turn and confront the trouble on our own. But the reality is that we aren’t on our own. God is there, ready to help and comfort us. All we have to do is turn away from whatever scares us, and move in His direction. His Word says, “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe” (PROV. 18:10). - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

절대 고갈되지 않는다

얼마 안 있으면 은퇴하게 된 친구에게 삶의 다음 단계에서 걱정되는 것이 무엇인지 물어보자, 그녀는 “돈이 떨어지지 않을 거라는 것을 확신하고 싶어요.”라고 대답했습니다. 바로 다음 날 나는 재정상담가와 이야기하는 중에, 어떻게 하면 돈이 다 떨어지는 것을 피할 수 있는지에 대해 조언을 얻게 되었습니다. 사실 우리 모두는 남은 생애 동안 필요한 자원이 충분히 보장되기를 원합니다.

그러나 어떤 재정계획도 이 땅에서의 안전을 절대적으로 보장해줄 수 없습니다. 하지만 이 세상의 삶을 훨씬 지나 미래로까지 영원히 이어지는 계획이 있습니다. 바울 사도는 그것을 이렇게 설명합니다. “그의 많으신 긍휼대로 예수 그리스도를 죽은 자 가운데서 부활하게 하심으로 말미암아 우리를 거듭나게 하사 산 소망이 있게 하시며 썩지 않고 더럽지 않고 쇠하지 아니하는 유업을 잇게 하시나니”(베드로전서 1:3-4).

예수님께서 우리의 죄를 용서하신다는 것을 믿을 때 우리는 하나님의 권세로 영원한 유업을 상속받게 됩니다. 이 유업 때문에 우리는 영원히 살고 우리에게 필요한 것이 절대로 고갈되지 않을 것입니다.

우리가 할 수만 있다면 은퇴 이후를 위해 계획하는 것은 좋은 생각입니다. 하지만 더 중요한 것은 절대 고갈되지 않는 영원한 유업을 갖는 것입니다. 그 유업은 오직 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로써만 받을 수 있습니다.

It Never Runs Out

When I asked a friend who is about to retire what she feared about her next stage of life, she said, “I want to make sure I don’t run out of money.” The next day as I was talking to my financial counselor he gave me advice on how I might avoid running out of money. Indeed, we all want the security of knowing we’ll have the resources we need for the rest of our lives.

No financial plan can provide an absolute guarantee of earthly security. But there is a plan that extends far beyond this life and indefinitely into the future. The apostle Peter describes it like
this: “In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade” (1 PETER 1:3–4).

When we place our faith in Jesus to forgive our sins we receive an eternal inheritance through God’s power. Because of this inheritance, we’ll live forever and never run short of what we need.

Planning for retirement is a good idea if we’re able to do so. But more important is having an eternal inheritance that never runs out—and that is available only through faith in Jesus Christ. - DAVE BRANON

하나님의 음성 듣기

나는 감기와 알레르기 때문에 내가 마치 물속에 있는 것처럼 소리를 잘 듣지 못하였습니다. 몇 주 동안이나 잘 들리지 않아 고생했는데, 이 일로 그동안 내가 들을 수 있다는 것을 얼마나 당연하게 여겼는지를 깨닫게 되었습니다.

성전에 있던 어린 사무엘은 잠을 깨우며 자기를 부르는 소리가 무엇이었는지 분명히 궁금했을 것입니다 (사무엘상 3:4). 사무엘은 세 번이나 대제사장 엘리에게 갔습니다. 세 번째에 마침내 엘리는 하나님께서 사무엘을 부르시고 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그 당시에는 여호와의 말씀이 희귀하여(1절), 사람들은 주님의 음성을 들을 수 없었습니다. 엘리는 사무엘에게 주님의 음성에 어떻게 응답할지를 알려주었습니다(9절).

하나님은 사무엘의 시대보다 지금 우리에게 훨씬 더 많이 말씀하십니다. 히브리서는 우리에게 “옛적에 선지자들을 통하여......우리 조상들에게 말씀하신 하나님이 이 모든 날 마지막에는 아들을 통하여 우리에게 말씀하셨다”(1:1-2)라고 말합니다. 그리고 사도행전 2장은 예수님이 우리에게 가르쳐주신 것으로 우리를 이끌어주시는(요한복음 16:13) 성령님이 오순절에 강림하셨다고 이야기합니다(사도행전 2:1-4). 하지만 우리는 주님의 음성을 듣고 그 음성에 순종하는 것을 배워야 합니다.

내가 감기에 걸렸을 때처럼, 우리는 마치 물속에 있는 것처럼 잘 듣지 못할지도 모릅니다. 우리는 우리가 주님의 인도하심이라고 생각하는 것을 성경에 비추어보고 다른 성숙한 신앙인들과 함께 점검해보는 게 좋습니다. 하나님의 소중한 자녀로서, 우리는 주님의 음성을 들어야 합니다. 하나님은 우리에게 생명에 대해 말씀하기를 좋아하십니다.

Hearing God

I felt like I was underwater, sounds muffled and muted by a cold and allergies. For weeks I struggled to hear clearly. My condition made me realize how much I take my hearing for granted.

Young Samuel in the temple must have wondered what he was hearing as he struggled out of sleep at the summons of his name (1 SAM. 3:4). Three times he presented himself before Eli, the high priest. Only the third time did Eli realize it was the Lord speaking to Samuel. The word of the Lord had been rare at that time (V. 1), and the people were not in tune with His voice. But Eli instructed Samuel how to respond (V. 9).

The Lord speaks much more now than in the days of Samuel. The letter to the Hebrews tells us, “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets . . . but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (1:1–2). And in Acts 2 we read of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (VV. 1–4), who guides us in the things Christ taught us (JOHN 16:13). But we need to learn to hear His voice and respond in obedience.

Like me with my cold, we may hear as if underwater. We need to test what we think is the Lord’s guidance with the Bible and with other mature Christians. As God’s beloved children, we do hear His voice. He loves to speak life into us. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

기도하는 환자

내가 사는 도시의 알란 내닝거라는 남자는 그의 부고에 “최고로 헌신적인 그리스도의 증인”으로 소개되어 있었습니다. 그 기사는 그의 가정생활과 경력을 나열한 후, 지난 10년 가까이 점점 나빠져 갔던 그의 건강에 관해 언급했습니다. 그리고 마지막에 다른 환자들을 기도로 도와준 것 때문에 “그가 병원에 있을 동안......‘기도하는 환자’라는 명예로운 호칭을 받았다”라고 결론짓고 있었습니다. 그는 자신의 고통 중에도 주위에 있는 도움이 필요로 하는 사람들을 찾아가 기도한 사람이었습니다.

유다가 주님을 배신하기 몇 시간 전 예수님은 제자들을 위해 기도하셨습니다. “나는 세상에 더 있지 아니하오나 그들은 세상에 있사옵고 나는 아버지께로 가옵나니 거룩하신 아버지여 내게 주신 아버지의 이름으로 그들을 보전하사 우리와 같이 그들도 하나가 되게 하옵소서” (요한복음 17:11). 앞으로 될 일을 아시면서도, 예수님은 자신을 젖혀놓고 그를 따르는 자들과 친구들을 먼저 살피셨습니다.

우리는 아플 때나 괴로울 때 다른 사람의 기도가 필요하고 또 기도해줄 것을 간절히 바랍니다. 그들의 기도가 얼마나 큰 도움이 되고 힘이 되는지요! 그러나 우리 또한 주님처럼 눈을 들어 우리 주위에 더 힘든 상황에 처해 있는 사람들을 위해 기도할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

The Praying Patient

The obituary for Alan Nanninga, a man in my city, identified him as “foremost, a dedicated witness for Christ.” After a description of his family life and career, the article mentioned nearly a decade of declining health. It concluded by saying, “His hospital stays . . . earned him the honorary title of ‘The Praying Patient’” because of his ministry to other patients. Here was a man who, in his times of distress, reached out to pray for and with the people in need around him.

Hours before Judas betrayed Him, Jesus prayed for His disciples. “I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one” (JOHN 17:11). Knowing what was about to happen, Jesus looked beyond Himself to focus on His followers and friends.

During our times of illness and distress, we long for and need the prayers of others. How those prayers help and encourage us! But may we also, like our Lord, lift our eyes to pray for those around us who are in great need. - DAVID MCCASLAND

세는 것을 배우기

우리 아들이 지금 하나에서 열까지 세는 것을 배우고 있습니다. 장난감부터 나무까지 뭐든지 셉니다. 학교 가는 길에 있는 들꽃이나 내 발가락같이 내가 무심코 지나치는 것들도 셉니다.

아들의 이 모습은 내게 다시 세어보라고 가르쳐주고 있습니다. 종종 나는 끝내지 못했거나 갖고 있지 못한 것들에 집착하여 내 주위의 모든 좋은 것들을 보지 못하는 잘못을 범하곤 합니다. 올해 새로 알게 된 친구가 몇 명이며, 얼마나 많은 기도가 응답되었는지, 좋은 친구들과 함께 하며 기쁨의 눈물을 흘리거나 웃었던 게 얼마나 되는지, 그런 것들을 세는 것을 잊고 있었습니다.

하나님께서 매일 나에게 주시는 것을 모두 세려면 열 손가락도 부족합니다. “여호와 나의 하나님이여 주께서 행하신 기적이 많고 우리를 향하신 주의 생각도 많아 누구도 주와 견줄 수가 없나이다 내가 널리 알려 말하고자 하나 너무 많아 그 수를 셀 수도 없나이다”(시편 40:5). 어떻게 우리가 하나님께서 주신 구원과 화해, 그리고 영생의 축복을 다 세어볼 수 있겠습니까?

다윗이 “하나님이여 주의 생각이 내게 어찌 그리 보배로우신지요 그 수가 어찌 그리 많은지요 내가 세려고 할지라도 그 수가 모래보다 많도소이다 내가 깰 때에도 여전히 주와 함께 있나이다”(139:17-18)라고 말하면서, 우리를 향한 하나님의 소중한 생각과 그 하신 일로 주님을 찬양한 것처럼 우리도 하나님을 찬양합시다.

다시 세는 것을 배우도록 합시다!

Learning to Count

My son is learning to count from one to ten. He counts everything from toys to trees. He counts things I tend to overlook, like the wildflowers on his way to school or the toes on my feet.

My son is also teaching me to count again. Often I become so immersed in things I haven’t finished or things I don’t have that I fail to see all the good things around me. I have forgotten to count the new friends made this year and the answered prayers received, the tears of joy shed and the times of laughter with good friends.

My ten fingers are not enough to count all that God gives me day by day. “Many, Lord my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare” (PS. 40:5). How can we even begin to count all the blessings of salvation, reconciliation, and eternal life?

Let us join David as he praises God for all His precious thoughts about us and all He has done for us, when he says, “How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand” (139:17–18).

단계별로

민수기 33장은 별생각 없이 지나쳐버리기 쉬운 성경의 한 장입니다. 그것은 단지 애굽의 라암셋으로부터 모압 평야에 이르기까지 이스라엘 민족이 거쳐 간 지명들을 길게 나열해놓은 것에 지나지 않는 것처럼 보입니다. 그러나 그것은 민수기에서 “모세가 여호와의 명대로...... 기록하였으니”(2절)라고 시작되는 유일한 부분이기에 중요하지 않을 수 없습니다.

왜 이것을 기록했을까요? 이스라엘 민족이 지난 40년 광야생활을 돌아보며 각 지역에서 경험한 하나님의 신실하심을 되돌아볼 수 있게 하는 기본 틀을 이 목록이 제공해주는 것일까요?

모닥불 옆에 앉아서 그의 아들에게 지난날을 회상해 들려주는 이스라엘의 한 아버지를 상상해봅니다. “난 르비딤을 결코 잊을 수 없어! 수백 마일의 모래와 샐비어 풀밖에 없는 광야에서 나는 목말라 죽어가고 있었지. 그때 하나님께서 모세에게 그의 지팡이를 들어 바위를 치라고 명하셨어. 실제로 아주 단단한 바위였지. ‘그 하찮은 행위로 그 바위에서 무얼 얻겠다고?’라고 나는 생각했어. 그런데 정말 놀랍게도 그 바위에서 물이 세차게 흘러나오는 거야! 수많은 이스라엘 사람들의 갈증을 풀어준 고마운 물이었지. 난 그 날을 결코 잊을 수 없어!”(시편 114:8; 민수기 20:8-13; 33:14 참조).

그러니 한번 시도해보십시오. 당신의 삶을 단계별로 뒤돌아보면서, 하나님이 그분의 신실하신 언약의 사랑을 당신에게 보여주셨던 그 모든 길들을 기억하십시오.

Stage by Stage

Numbers 33 is a chapter in the Bible we might pass by without reflection. It appears to be nothing more than a long list of places tracing Israel’s pilgrimage from Rameses in Egypt to their arrival in the plains of Moab. But it must be important because it’s the only section in Numbers that follows with the words: “At the Lord’s command Moses recorded . . .” (V. 2).

Why keep a record of this? Could it be that this list provides a framework upon which the Israelites emerging from the wilderness could retrace that fortyyear journey in their thoughts and recall God’s faithfulness at each location?

I envision an Israelite father, sitting near a campfire, reminiscing with his son: “I will never forget Rephidim! I was dying of thirst, nothing but sand and sage for hundreds of miles. Then God directed Moses to take his staff and strike a rock—actually a hard slab of flint. I thought, What a futile gesture; he’ll never get anything out of that stone. But to my amazement water gushed out of that rock! A generous flow that satisfied the thirst of the thousands of Israelites. I’ll never forget that day!” (SEE PS. 114:8; NUM. 20:8–13; 33:14).

So why not give it a try? Reflect on your life—stage by stage—and remember all the ways God has shown you His faithful, covenant love. - DAVID ROPER

마음을 수선하기

얼마 전 옷을 고치기 위해 재봉사에게 갔습니다. 가게에 들어가면서 벽에 붙어있는 글을 보고 기분이 참 좋았습니다. “우리는 당신의 옷을 수선할 수 있지만, 오직 하나님만이 당신의 마음을 수선하실 수 있습니다.”라는 글이 걸려 있었습니다. 그 옆에는 부활하신 그리스도께서 나타나시기 바로 전 막달라 마리아가 고통스럽게 울고 있는 그림이 있었습니다. 벽의 다른 곳에는 “기도가 필요하십니까? 저희가 같 이 기도해 드리겠습니다.”라는 글이 붙어 있었습니다.

그 가게 주인은 지난 15년 동안 이 작은 가게를 꾸려왔다고 했습니다. “우리가 여기저기 붙여놓은 믿음의 글들을 통해 주님께서 역사하시는 것을 보고 아주 놀랐습니다. 얼마 전에는 한 손님이 바로 이곳에서 예수님을 영접했습니다. 하나님의 역사하심을 보는 게 참 놀랍습니다.” 그녀에게 나도 그리스도인이라고 밝히며 가게에 오는 사람들에게 예수님에 대해 계속 말해 달라고 부탁했습니다.

일터에서 우리가 모두 다 이렇게 담대할 수는 없습니다. 그러나 우리가 어디에 있든 사람들에게 그들이 기대하지 않았던 사랑과 인내, 그리고 친절을 보여줄 수 있는 여러 가지 창조적이고 실제적인 방법들을 찾아낼 수 있습니다. 그 가게를 떠나온 후 나는 “너희는 세상의 빛이라” (마태복음 5:14)는 우리 주님의 말씀을 실천할 방법이 얼마나 많이 있을까 계속 생각하고 있습니다.

Mending Hearts

Not long ago I went to a seamstress to have some clothing altered. As I entered her shop I was encouraged by what I saw on the walls. One sign read, “We can mend your clothes but only God can mend your heart.” Near it was a painting of Mary Magdalene weeping in anguish as the risen Christ was about to reveal Himself to her. Another sign asked, “Need prayer? Let us pray with you.”

The owner told me that she had been running this small business for fifteen years. “We’ve been surprised how the Lord has worked here through the statements of faith we have posted in different places. A while back someone trusted Christ as their Savior right here. It is amazing to watch God work.” I told her I too was a Christian and commended her for telling others about Christ in her workplace.

Not all of us are able to be so bold in our workplace, but we can find many creative and practical ways of showing others unexpected love, patience, and kindness wherever we are. Since leaving that shop, I’ve been thinking about how many ways there are to live out our Lord’s statement: “You are the light of the world” (MATT. 5:14). - DENNIS FISHER

바로 이 선물

여러 해 전에, 내가 수집한 여러 가지 지팡이들에 대한 수필을 쓰면서 언젠가는 나도 보행기 신세를 져야 할 날이 올지도 모른다는 생각을 했습니다. 그런데 그날이 정말 왔습니다. 허리 문제와 말초신경장애가 겹쳐 세 바퀴 달린 보행기를 사용하게 된 것입니다. 등산과 낚시를 포함하여 몹시 즐기던 여러 가지 활동들을 하지 못하게 되었습니다.

그러나 나는 나를 제한하는 그 무엇이든 그것이 하나님이 주신 선물이라는 것을 배우고, 이 선물을 가지고 하나님을 섬기려 합니다. 다른 것이 아닌 바로 이 선물로 말입니다. 감정적인 면이나 육체적인 면, 혹은 지적인 면에 드러나는 그 한계는 우리 모두에게 다 나타나는 일입니다. 바울은 하나님의 능력이 자신의 약함을 통해 나타났다고 하면서 담대히 자신의 약함을 자랑했습니다(고린도후서 12:9).

소위 장애를 이런 식으로 보게 되면 우리는 자신감과 용기를 가지고 생활해나갈 수 있습니다. 그리고 불평하거나 주눅 들거나 현실을 회피하는 대신, 하나님이 계획하신 목적을 위해 우리가 하나님께 쓰임 받을 수 있도록 준비할 수 있습니다.

나는 주님께서 당신과 나를 위해 무엇을 계획하고 계신지 잘 모르지만, 그것은 우리가 걱정할 일이 아닙니다. 오늘 우리가 해야 할 일은 하나님의 사랑과 지혜와 섭리 안에서 지금 이 순간이 더할 나위 없이 좋은 순간이라는 것을 알고, 현실을 있는 그대로 받아들이며 만족하는 것입니다.

This Gift

A number of years ago I wrote an essay about my collection of canes, staffs, and walking sticks and mused that I might someday graduate to a walker. Well, the day has come. A combination of back issues and peripheral neuropathy has left me pushing a three-wheel walker. I can’t hike; I can’t fish; I can’t do many of the things that used to bring me great joy.

I’m trying to learn, however, that my limitation, whatever it may be, is a gift from God, and it is with this gift that I am to serve Him. This gift and not another. This is true of all of us, whether our limits are emotional, physical, or intellectual. Paul was so bold as to say that he boasted in his weakness for it was in weakness that God’s power was revealed in him (2 COR. 12:9).

Seeing our so-called liabilities this way enables us to go about our business with confidence and courage. Rather than complain, feel sorry for ourselves, or opt out, we make ourselves available to God for His intended purposes.

I have no idea what He has in mind for you and me, but we shouldn’t worry about that. Our task today is just to accept things as they are and to be content, knowing that in the love, wisdom, and providence of God this moment is as good as it can possibly be. - DAVID ROPER
