세심한 주의를 기울여라
나는 강당에 앉아 시선을 목사에게 고정시키고 똑바로 보고 있었습니다. 내 자세는 그가 말하는 모든 것을 내가 흡수하고 있다는 것을 암시하고 있었습니다. 그런데 갑자기 모든 사람들이 웃으면서 박수치는 소리가 들렸습니다. 나는 놀라 주위를 돌아보았습니다. 목사님이 무언가 재미있는 이야기를 한 것 같았지만, 나는 그것이 무엇인지 전혀 알 수 없었습니다. 겉으로 보기에 주의 깊게 듣는 것처럼 보였지만 실제 내 마음은 멀리 떠나 있었던 것입니다.
말하는 것을 듣기는 하지만 귀를 기울이지 못할 수 있고, 쳐다보지만 제대로 보지 못할 수 있으며, 자리에 앉아 있지만 자리에 없는 것 같을 수 있습니다. 우리는 그런 상황에서 우리에게 중요한 메시지를 놓칠 수 있습니다.
에스라가 유다 백성들에게 하나님의 가르침을 읽어주었을때, “뭇 백성이 그 율법책에 귀를 기울였습니다”(느헤미야 8:3). 뜻을 해석해주는 것에 주의를 기울임으로 그들은 다 깨닫게 되었고 (8절), 그것은 곧 회개와 부흥을 가져왔습니다. 사마리아에서 있었던 다른 경우를 보면, 예루살렘의 신자들에게 박해가 있은 후 (사도행전 8:1) 빌립은 사마리아 백성들에게로 나아갔습니다. 군중들은 그가 행한 표적을 보았을 뿐만 아니라, “그가 하는 말에 한 마음으로 귀를 기울였습니다”(6절, 새번역). “그래서 그 성에는 큰 기쁨이 넘쳤습니다” (8절, 새번역).
마음은 바로 가까이에 있는 많은 신나는 것들을 놓치는 방황하는 모험가 같을 수 있습니다. 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지의 기쁨과 경이로움을 발견할 수 있게 도와주는 말씀들보다 더 주의를 기울여야 하는 것은 없습니다.

Pay Close Attention
As I sat in the auditorium, I faced the pastor with my eyes fixed on him. My posture suggested I was absorbing everything he was saying. Suddenly I heard everybody laughing and clapping. Surprised, I looked about. The preacher had apparently said something humorous, but I had no clue what it might have been. From all appearances I had been listening carefully, but in reality my mind was far away.
It’s possible to hear what is being said but not listen, to watch but not see, to be present and yet absent. In such a condition, we may miss important messages meant for us.
As Ezra read God’s instructions to the people of Judah, “All the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law” (NEH. 8:3). Their attention to the explanation produced understanding (V. 8), which resulted in their repentance and revival. In another situation in Samaria, Philip, after persecution of the believers broke out in Jerusalem (ACTS 8:1), reached out to the Samaritan people. The crowd not only observed the miraculous signs he did, but they also “paid close attention to what he said” (V. 6). “So there was great joy in that city” (V. 8).
The mind can be like a wandering adventurer that misses a lot of excitement close by. Nothing deserves more attention than words that help us discover the joy and wonder of our Father in heaven. - LAWRENCE DARMANI

빵이요!
내가 살고 있는 멕시코의 한 작은 도시에서는 매일 아침저녁으로 “빵이요!”라고 외치는 독특한 소리를 들을 수 있습니다. 큰 바구니를 자전거에 매단 사람이 갓 구운 달고 짭짤한 여러 종류의 빵을 파는 것입니다. 전에 큰 도시에 살 때엔 빵을 사려면 빵집에 가야했습니다. 하지만 지금은 집 앞으로 배달되는 신선한 빵을 즐깁니다.
몸의 허기를 채우는 것에서 영적인 허기를 채우는 것으로 생각을 옮겨보면서 나는 예수님의 다음 말씀을 생각해봅니다. “나는 하늘에서 내려온 살아 있는 떡이니 사람이 이 떡을 먹으면 영생하리라”(요한복음 6:51).
어떤 사람은 전도란 실제로 한 거지가 다른 거지에게 빵을 어디서 찾았는지 말해주는 것이라고 했습니다. 우리 중 많은 사람들이 이렇게 말할 수 있습니다. “나는 한 때 내 죄 때문에 영적으로 허기지고 굶주렸습니다. 그때 나는 좋은 소식을 들었습니다. 누군가가 내게 빵을 어디서 찾을 수 있는지를, 즉 예수님 안에서 찾을 수 있다는 것을 알려주었습니다. 그리고 내 삶이 변화되었습다!”
이제 우리에게는 다른 사람들에게 생명의 양식을 알려줄 특권과 책임이 있습니다. 동네에서, 일터에서, 학교에서, 오락장소에서 우리는 예수님에 대한 말씀을 나눌 수 있으며, 대합실이나 버스, 기차에서도 우리는 예수님에 대해 말할 수 있습니다. 그리고 우정의 문을 통해서도 다른 이들에게 좋은 소식을 전할 수 있습니다.
예수님은 생명의 양식입니다. 모든 사람들에게 이 놀라운 소식을 전해줍시다.

Bread!
I live in a small Mexican city where every morning and evening you can hear a distinctive cry: “Bread!” A man with a huge basket on his bike offers a great variety of fresh sweet and salty breads for sale. I used to live in a bigger city, where I had to go to the bakery to buy bread. So I enjoy having fresh bread brought to my door.
Moving from the thought of feeding physical hunger to spiritual hunger, I think of Jesus’s words: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever” (JOHN 6:51).
Someone has said that evangelism is really one beggar telling another beggar where he found bread. Many of us can say, “Once I was spiritually hungry, spiritually starving because of my sins. Then I heard the good news. Someone told me where to find bread: in Jesus. And my life changed!”
Now we have the privilege and the responsibility of pointing others to this Bread of Life. We can share Jesus in our neighborhood, in our workplace, in our school, in our places of recreation. We can talk about Jesus in the waiting room, on the bus, or on the train. We can take the good news to others through doors of friendship.
Jesus is the Bread of Life. Let’s tell everybody the great news. - KEILA OCHOA

올바른 관점
랄리는 힘이 센 개처럼 보입니다. 그 개는 크고 근육이 발달되어 있으며 두꺼운 털로 덮여있습니다. 그리고 몸무게도 백 파운드 (약 45킬로그램)가 넘습니다! 그런 모습에도 불구하고 랄리는 사람들과 잘 어울립니다. 랄리의 주인은 그 개를 양로원이나 병원에 데리고 다니면서 사람들에게 미소를 선사합니다.
한 번은 네 살짜리 어린 소녀가 방 건너편에 있는 랄리를 보았습니다. 소녀는 그 개를 만지고 싶었지만 겁이 나서 가까이 가지 못했습니다. 그러나 결국 소녀의 호기심이 경계심을 눌러, 소녀는 몇 분 동안 개에게 말을 걸고 쓰다듬었습니다. 소녀는 그 개가 힘은 세지만 온순하다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다.
이러한 속성들의 조화로운 어울림은 신약성경에서 읽은 예수님의 모습을 떠올려주었습니다. 어린아이들을 반겨주셨던 예수님은(마태복음 19:13-15) 가까이 다가갈 수 있는 분이셨습니다. 그분은 절망적인 상황에 놓인 간음한 여인에게 친절을 베푸셨습니다(요한복음 8:1-11). 예수님은 측은히 여기는 마음으로 군중들을 가르치셨습니다(마가복음 6:34). 동시에 예수님은 놀라운 능력을
가진 분이셨습니다. 주님이 마귀를 제압하고, 광풍을 잠재우고, 죽은 사람들을 다시 살리셨을 때, 사람들은 놀라고 경악했습니다!(마가복음 1:21-34; 4:35-41; 요한복음 11).
예수님을 보는 관점이 우리와 그분과의 관계를 결정합니다. 만약 그분의 능력에만 초점을 맞춘다면, 우리는 만화책 속에 있는 슈퍼히어로를 찬미하는 것처럼 거리를 두고 예수님을 대하게 될지도 모릅니다. 또 그분의 인자하심만을 지나치게 강조한다면, 예수님을 너무 무심하게 대할 위험이 있습니다. 하지만 사실 예수님은 동시에 양쪽을 다 가지신 분입니다. 주님은 우리의 순종을 받으시기에 합당한 위대한 분이신 동시에 우리를 친구라고 불러주실 정도로 겸손한 분이십니다.

The Bible in One Year: JEREMIAH 50 and HEBREWS 8

Seeing Well
Raleigh looks like a powerful dog—he is large and muscular and has a thick coat of fur. And he weighs over 100 pounds! Despite his appearance, Raleigh connects well with people. His owner takes him to nursing homes and hospitals to bring people a smile.
Once, a four-year-old girl spotted Raleigh across a room. She wanted to pet him, but was afraid to get close. Eventually, her curiosity overcame her sense of caution and she spent several minutes talking to him and petting him. She discovered that he is a gentle creature, even though he is powerful.
The combination of these qualities reminds me of what we read about Jesus in the New Testament. Jesus was approachable— He welcomed little children (MATT. 19:13–15). He was kind to an adulterous woman in a desperate situation (JOHN 8:1–11). Compassion motivated Him to teach crowds (MARK 6:34). At the same time, Jesus’s power was astounding. Heads turned and jaws dropped as He subdued demons, calmed violent storms, and resurrected dead people! (MARK 1:21–34; 4:35–41; JOHN 11).
The way we see Jesus determines how we relate to Him. If we focus only on His power, we may treat Him with the detached worship we’d give a comic book superhero. Yet, if we overemphasize His kindness, we risk treating Him too casually. The truth is that Jesus is both at once—great enough to deserve our obedience yet humble enough to call us friends.- JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

새로운 목적
재단사 제이콥 데이비스는 문제에 당면했습니다. 1800년대 미국 서부에 골드러시가 한창일 때였는데, 금을 캐는 광부들의 작업바지가 계속 닳아서 해어지는 것이었습니다. 그가 어떻게 해결했을까요? 데이비스는 그 지역에 있는 리바이 스트라우스 소유의 직물공장에서 텐트 천을 구입하여, 이 두껍고 튼튼한 소재로 작업바지를 만들었습니다. 청바지가 탄생하게 된 것입니다. 오늘날 (리바이스를 포함한) 다양한 형태의 청바지들은 세계에서 가장 인기 있는 의류 품목이 되었으며, 이것은 모두 텐트 천을 새로운 목적으로 사용하였기 때문입니다.
시몬과 그의 친구들은 갈릴리 바다에서 고기를 잡는 어부였습니다. 그런데 예수님이 오셔서 그들에게 주님을 따라오라고 부르셨습니다. 주님이 그들에게 새로운 목적을 주신 것입니다. 그들은
이제는 더 이상 고기를 낚는 어부가 아니었습니다. 예수님은 그들에게 “나를 따라오라 내가 너희로 사람을 낚는 어부가 되게 하리라”(마가복음 1:17)고 말씀하셨습니다.
그들의 삶에 세워진 이 새로운 목적을 갖게 된 이 사람들은 예수님께 배우고 훈련을 받아, 예수님이 승천하신 뒤에 그리스도의 십자가와 부활의 메시지로 사람들의 마음을 얻는 일로 하나님께 쓰임 받을 수 있었습니다. 오늘날, 우리는 그리스도의 사랑과 구원의 좋은 소식을 나누며 그들의 발자취를 뒤따라갑니다.
우리의 삶이 다른 사람들의 삶과 목적, 그리고 영원한 운명을 바꿀 수 있는 이 사랑을 전하고 나타낼 수 있기를 바랍니다.

A New Purpose
Jacob Davis was a tailor with a problem. It was the height of the Gold Rush in the 1800s American West and the gold miners’ work pants kept wearing out. His solution? Davis went to a local dry goods company owned by Levi Strauss, purchased tent cloth, and made work pants from that heavy, sturdy material—and blue jeans were born. Today, denim jeans in a variety of forms (including Levi’s) are among the most popular clothing items in the world, and all because tent material was given a new purpose.
Simon and his friends were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. Then Jesus arrived and called them to follow Him. He gave them a new purpose. No longer would they fish for fish. As Jesus told them, “Come, follow me, . . . and I will send you out to fish for people” (MARK 1:17).

Simon and his friends were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. Then Jesus arrived and called them to follow Him. He gave them a new purpose. No longer would they fish for fish. As Jesus told them, “Come, follow me, . . . and I will send you out to fish for people” (MARK 1:17).

Signs and Feelings
A young man I know has a habit of asking God for signs. That’s not necessarily bad, but his prayers tend to seek confirmation of his feelings. For instance, he’ll pray, “God, if You want me to do X, then You please do Y, and I’ll know it’s okay.”
This has created a dilemma. Because of the way he prays and the way he thinks God is answering, he feels that he should get back with his ex-girlfriend. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she feels strongly that God doesn’t want that.
The religious leaders of Jesus’s day demanded a sign from Him to prove the validity of His claims (MATT. 16:1). They weren’t seeking God’s guidance; they were challenging His divine authority. Jesus replied, “A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign” (V. 4). The Lord’s strong response wasn’t a blanket statement to prevent anyone from seeking God’s guidance. Rather, Jesus was accusing them of ignoring the clear prophecies in Scripture that indicated He was the Messiah.
God wants us to seek His guidance in prayer (JAMES 1:5). He also gives us the guidance of the Spirit (JOHN 14:26) and His Word (PS. 119:105). He provides us with mentors and wise leaders. And He’s given us the example of Jesus Himself.
It’s wise to ask God for clear direction, but He may not always give it in ways that we expect or want. Perhaps the larger point of prayer is that we learn more about God’s nature and develop a relationship with our Father. - TIM GUSTAFSON

추운 겨울 저녁에 지역교회의 자원봉사자들이 저소득층 주민들이 살고 있는 아파트 단지에서 음식을 나누어주었습니다. 한 여인이 그 음식을 받고 너무 기뻐했습니다. 자신의 비어 있는 찬장을 봉사자들에게 보여주면서 그들은 바로 그녀의 기도응답이라고 말했습니다.
봉사자들이 교회로 돌아왔을 때 한 여자가 울기 시작했습니다. “그분은 제가 어렸을 때 주일학교 선생님이셨어요. 그분은 매주 주일마다 교회에 오시는데, 우리는 그분이 거의 굶고 계시다는 것을 전혀 몰랐어요!”

We Had No Idea
Volunteers from a local church spent a frigid evening distributing food to people in a low-income apartment complex. One woman who received the food was overjoyed. She showed them her bare cupboard and told them they were an answer to her prayers.
As the volunteers returned to the church, one woman began to cry. “When I was a little girl,” she said, “that lady was my Sunday school teacher. She’s in church every Sunday. We had no idea she was almost starving!”
Clearly, these were caring people who were seeking ways to carry the burdens of others, as Paul suggests in Galatians 6:2. Yet somehow they hadn’t noticed the needs of this woman someone they saw every Sunday—and she hadn’t shared her needs. This can be a gentle reminder for all of us to be more aware of those around us and, as Paul said, to “do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers” (6:10).
People who worship together have the privilege of assisting one another so no one in the body of Christ goes without help. As we get to know each other and care for each other, perhaps we won’t ever have to say, “We had no idea.” - DAVE BRANON

존 번연이 예수님을 믿는 사람들의 생활을 우화적으로 묘사한 고전 ‘천로역정’ 에 보면, 주인공 크리스천은 ‘곤고의 언덕’ 이라 불리는 가파른 산자락에 도착하여, “언덕 맨 아래 샘이 솟는 곳......그곳에 가서 물을 마시고 재충전하여 언덕을 오르기 시작했습니다.”

A Difficult Hill
High in a fold of Jughandle Peak in the mountains north of our home in Idaho lies a glacial lake. The route to the lake goes up a steep, exposed ridge through boulders and loose stones. It’s a strenuous ascent.
At the beginning of the climb, however, there is a brook— a spring that seeps out of soft, mossy earth and flows through a lush meadow. It’s a quiet place to drink deeply and prepare for the hard climb ahead.
In John Bunyan’s classic allegory of the Christian life, The Pilgrim’s Progress, Christian arrives at the foot of a steep ascent called the Hill Difficulty, “at the bottom of which was a spring . . . . Christian now went to the spring and drank to refresh himself, and then began to go up the hill.”
Perhaps the difficult mountain you face is a rebellious child or a serious medical diagnosis. The challenge seems more than you can endure.
Before you face your next major task, visit the spring of refreshment that is God Himself. Come to Him with all your weakness, weariness, helplessness, fear, and doubt. Then drink deeply of His power, strength, and wisdom. God knows all your circumstances and will supply a store of comfort, of spiritual strengthening and consolation. He will lift up your head and give you strength to go on. - DAVID ROPER

집을 떠나는 것을 아주 두려워했던 한 일본 청년이 있었습니다. 그는 사람들을 피하기 위해 낮 동안에는 잠을 자고, 텔레비전을 보면서 온 밤을 지새웠습니다. 그는 일본말로 히키코모리, 즉 현대판 은둔자였습니다. 그 문제는 그가 나쁜 성적 때문에 학교 가기를 그만둔 후부터 시작되었습니다. 사회와 격리되어 지내는 시간이 길어질수록 그는 점점 더 사회에 적응할 수 없게 되었고, 결국 친구와 가족과도 모든 연락을 끊어버렸습니다. 그러다가 일본 말로 이바쇼라 불리는 도쿄의 청년 클럽을 방문하게 되면서 그는 회복의 길로 가는 도움을 받게 되었습니다. 그곳은 좌절한 사람들이 사회생활을 다시 시작할 수 있게 해주는 안전한 장소였습니다.
우리가 교회를 이바쇼나 혹은 그 이상의 장소로 생각해보면 어떨까요? 우리가 좌절한 사람들의 공동체라는 것에는 의심의 여지가 없습니다. 바울 사도는 고린도 교회에 쓴 서신에서, 그들의 전의 삶의 방식이 반사회적이고, 해로우며, 그들 자신에게나 다른 사람들에게 위험한 것이었다고 기술하고 있습니다(고린도전서 6:9-10). 그러나 예수님 안에서 그들은 변화되고 온전하게 되어가고 있었습니다. 그래서 바울은 이들 구원 받은 사람들에게 서로 사랑하며, 인내하고 친절하며, 시기하거나 자랑하거나 무례하지 말라고 권면하였습니다(13:4-7).

A Safe Place
A young Japanese man had a problem—he was afraid of leaving his house. To avoid other people, he slept through the day and stayed up all night watching TV. He was a hikikomori or a modern-day hermit. The problem began when he stopped going to school because of poor grades. The longer he remained apart from society, the more he felt like a social misfit. Eventually he broke off all communication with his friends and family. He was helped on his journey to recovery, though, by visiting a youth club in Tokyo known as an ibasho—a safe place where broken people could start reintroducing themselves to society.
What if we thought of the church as an ibasho—and far more? Without a doubt, we are a community of broken people. When the apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth he described their former way of life as anti-social, harmful, and dangerous to themselves and others (1 COR. 6:9–10). But in Jesus they were being transformed and made whole. And Paul encouraged these rescued people to love one another, to be patient and kind, not to be jealous or proud or rude (13:4–7).
The church is to be an ibasho where all of us, no matter what struggles or brokenness we face, can know and experience God’s love. May the hurting world experience the compassion of Christ from all who follow Him. - POH FANG CHIA

실천하는 사랑
런던에 있는 우리 집을 방문한 사람에게 “빨래할 옷가지가 있으면 해드릴까요?”라고 물어보았더니, 그의 얼굴이 환해지면서 옆에 지나가는 그의 딸에게 말했습니다. “더러워진 네 옷들을 가져오너라. 에이미가 우리 옷들도 빨아준다는구나!” 빨래할 옷이 몇 가지에서 몇 더미로 늘어난 것을 알고는 나는 슬며시 웃었습니다.
나중에 밖에서 옷들을 빨랫줄에 널고 있을 때, “오직 겸손한 마음으로 각각 자기보다 남을 낫게 여기라”(빌립보서 2:3) 고 하는 아침에 읽은 성경 구절이 마음속에 떠 올 랐 습 니 다 . 나 는 바 울 이 빌립보 교인들에게 보낸 편지를 읽고 있었는데, 거기에서 그는 남들을 섬기고 또 그들과 연 합 함 으로써 그리스도의 부르심에 합당하게 살라고 권면하고 있었습니다. 박해를 받고 있었지만 바울은 그들이 한 마음이 되기를 원했습니다. 그리스도와 연합함으로써 시작되어 서로를 섬기는 모습으로 표현되고 있는 그들의 연합이 그들의 믿음을 강하게 유지시켜줄 수 있음을 바울은 알고 있었던 것입니다.
우리는 이기적인 야망이나 허영심 없이 다른 사람들을 사랑한다고 말할 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리의 사랑이 행동으로 옮겨지기 전까지는 우리 마음의 진정한 모습이 드러나지 않습니다. 나는 투덜거리고 싶은 마음도 들었지만, 그리스도를 따르는 자로서 깨끗한 마음으로 친구들에게 사랑을 실천하도록 내가 부름 받았다는 사실을 알고 있었습니다.

Love in Action
“Do you have a few items you’d like me to wash?” I asked a visitor to our home in London. His face lit up, and as his daughter walked by, he said, “Get your dirty clothes—Amy’s doing our laundry!” I smiled, realizing that my offer had been extended from a few items to a few loads.
Later as I hung clothes outside on the line, a phrase from my morning’s Bible reading floated through my mind: “In humility value others above yourselves” (PHIL. 2:3). I had been reading Paul’s letter to the people of Philippi, in which he exhorts them to live worthy of Christ’s calling through serving and being united with others. They were facing persecution, but Paul wanted them to be of one mind. He knew that their unity, birthed through their union with Christ and expressed through serving each other, would enable them to keep strong in their faith.
We might claim to love others without selfish ambition or vain conceit, but the true state of our hearts isn’t revealed until we put our love into action. Though I felt tempted to grumble, I knew that as a follower of Christ, my call was to put my love for my friends into practice—with a clean heart.
May we find ways to serve our family, friends, and neighbors for God’s glory. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

예수님을 따르던 많은 사람들은 로마와 로마의 강압적인 박해에 정치적으로 강력하게 대처해줄 수 있는 메시아를 고대했습니다. 베드로도 예외는 아니었습니다. 로마 군인들이 그리스도를 잡으러 왔을 때, 베드로는 칼을 꺼내어 대제사장의 종의 머리를 향해 휘두르다가 그의 귀를 베어버렸습니다.
예 수 님 은 베 드 로 가 독자적으로 싸우는 것을 말리시면서 “칼을 칼집에 꽂으라 아버지께서 주신 잔을 내가 마시지 아니하겠느냐”(요한복음 18:11)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 몇 시간 후, 예수님은 빌라도에게 “내 나라는 이 세상에 속한 것이 아니라 만일 내 나라가 이 세상에 속한 것이었더라면 내 종들이 싸워 나로 유대인들에게 넘겨지지 않게 하였으리라”(36절) 라고 말씀하셨습니다.
자신의 목숨이 경각에 달린 그 순간에 주님께서 자제하셨던 것은 주님의 사역의 범위를 생각해볼 때 매우 놀라운 일입니다. 미래에 주님은 천국의 군대들을 전쟁터로 이끄실 것이기 때문입니다. 요한은 “그가 공의로 심판하며 싸우더라”(요한계시록 19:11)라고 기록했습니다.
그러나 예수님은 결박당하고, 재판 받고, 십자가형에 처해지는 고난을 견뎌내시며, 하나님 아버지의 뜻을 계속 지키셨습니다. 예수님은 십자가의 죽음을 받아들이심으로써, 사람들의 마음을 진실로 변화시키는 일련의 사건들을 시행하셨습니다. 그리고 그 과정 중에, 우리의 강한 승리자께서 사망을 이기셨습니다.

Strong Conqueror
Most of us hope for good government. We vote, we serve, and we speak out for causes we believe are fair and just. But political solutions remain powerless to change the condition of our hearts.
Many of Jesus’s followers anticipated a Messiah who would bring a vigorous political response to Rome and its heavy-handed oppression. Peter was no exception. When Roman soldiers came to arrest Christ, Peter drew his sword and took a swing at the head of the high priest’s servant, lopping off his ear in the process.
Jesus halted Peter’s one-man war, saying, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” (JOHN 18:11). Hours later, Jesus would tell Pilate, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders” (V. 36).
The Lord’s restraint in that moment, as His life hung in the balance, astonishes us when we ponder the scope of His mission. On a future day, He will lead the armies of heaven into battle. John wrote, “With justice he judges and wages war” (REV. 19:11).
But as He endured the ordeal of His arrest, trial, and crucifixion, Jesus kept His Father’s will in view. By embracing death on the cross, He set in motion a chain of events that truly transforms hearts. And in the process, our Strong Conqueror defeated death itself. - TIM GUSTAFSON
