단순한 말의 힘

아버지의 병실에서 터져 나오는 요란한 웃음소리가 병문안 온 손님들이 누군지 말해주었습니다. 나이 든 트럭운전사 둘, 왕년의 컨트리가수, 공예가, 이웃 농장의 여자 둘, 그리고 내가 있었습니다.

“......그러니까 그 녀석이 일어나더니 병으로 내 머리를 쳤다고.” 공예가가 그렇게 말하며 술집에서 있었던 싸움 이야기를 끝냈습니다.

이제는 재미있는 추억이 된 그 이야기로 병실은 웃음바다가 되었습니다. 암 투병으로 웃을 때마다 숨쉬기 힘들어하던 아버지는 사람들에게 “내 아들이 목사이니” 말을 함부로 하지 말라고 과장하여 주의를 주었습니다. 이 말에 한 2초간 조용하더니 곧 병실은 더욱 큰 웃음바다가 되었습니다.

병문안이 40분쯤 지났을 때, 공예가가 갑자기 목소리를 가다듬으며 아버지를 향하여 진지한 표정을 지었습니다. “하워드, 난 이제 술도 끊었고 술집에서 싸움도 안 한다네. 그런 건 다 지나간 일들이야. 나에겐 이제 살아야 할 다른 이유가 있다네. 자네에게 내 구주에 관해 이야기하고 싶네.”

의외로 아버지의 큰 저항 없이 그는 바로 본론으로 들어갔습니다. 나는 이보다 더 부드럽고 멋지게 복음을 전하는 방법을 아직 들어보지 못했습니다. 아버지는 귀 기울여 들으며 바라보았습니다. 그리고 몇 년 후 아버지도 예수님을 믿게 되었습니다.

그것은 단순한 삶을 살아온 한 오랜 친구의 단순한 간증이었습니다. 그 일을 통해 나는 단순함이 순진하거나 어리석은 것이 아니라, 더 직접적이며 겸손한 것임을 새삼 깨달았습니다.

예수님이 그와 같고, 구원이 바로 그와 같습니다.

The Power of Simple Words

Raucous laughter marked the guests in my father's hospital room: Two old truck drivers, one former country/western singer, one craftsman, two women from neighboring farms, and me. 

"...and then he got up and busted the bottle over my head," the craftsman said, finishing his story about a bar fight.

The room bursts into laughter at this now-humorous memory. Dad, struggling for breath as his laughing fought with his cancer for the air in his lungs, puffs out a reminder to everybody that “Randy is a preacher" so they need to watch what they say. Everything got quiet for about two seconds, then the whole room exploded as this news makes them laugh harder and louder. 

Suddenly, about forty minutes into this visit, the craftsman clears his throat, turns to my dad, and gets serious. "No more drinking and bar fights for me, Howard. Those days are behind me. Now I have a different reason to live. I want to tell you about my Savior."

He then proceeded to do just that, over my father's surprisingly mild protests.  If there's a sweeter, gentler way to present the gospel message, I've never heard it. 
My dad listened and watched, and some years later believed in Jesus too.

It was a simple testimony from an old friend living a simple life, reminding me again that simple isn't naïve or stupid; it's direct and unpretentious.

제시간에

나는 가끔 ‘제시간에’라는 제목의 책을 낼 거라고 농담을 합니다. 그러면 나를 아는 사람들은 내가 자주 모임에 늦는 걸 알기 때문에 미소를 짓습니다. 나는 늦을 때마다 노력이 부족해서라기보다는 내 낙천적인 성격이 원인이라고 합리화합니다. 나는 낙관하여 “이번에는” 예전과 달리 더 많은 일을 더 짧은 시간에 끝낼 수 있을 거라는 잘못된 믿음을 버리질 못합니다. 하지만, 사실 그렇게 하지도 못할 뿐 아니라, 하려고 하지도 않습니다. 그래서 결국은 또 다시 제 시간에 나타나지 못한 것을 사과해야만 합니다.

이와 반대로, 하나님은 언제나 제 시간에 일하십니다. 우리는 하나님께서 늦는다고 생각할지 모르지만 그렇지 않습니다. 우리는
성경 곳곳에서 하나님의 때를 기다리지 못하고 조급해하는 사람들을 봅니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 약속된 메시아를 기다리고 또 기다렸습니다. 어떤 사람들은 그 희망을 포기해버렸습니다. 하지만 시므온과 안나는 포기하지 않고 매일 성전에서 기도하며 기다렸습니다(누가복음 2:25- 26,37). 그리고 그들의 믿음은 보상을 받았습니다. 그들은 마리아와 요셉이 봉헌하기 위해 데려온 아기 예수를 보게 되었던 것입니다 (27-32,38절).

하나님이 우리의 시간표대로 응답하시지 않아 낙심될 때에 성탄절은 우리에게 다음과 같이 일러줍니다. “때가 차매 하나님이 그 아들을 보내사......우리로 아들의 명분을 얻게 하려 하심이라” (갈라디아서 4:4-5). 하나님의 시간은 언제나 완벽하기에 기다릴 만한 가치가 있습니다.

On Time

Sometimes I joke that I'm going to write a book titled On Time. Those who know me smile because they know I am often late. I rationalize that my lateness is due to optimism, not to lack of trying. I optimistically cling to the faulty belief that “this time” I will be able to get more done in less time than ever before. But I can't, and I don't, so I end up having to apologize yet again for my failure to show up on time.

In contrast, God is always on time. We may think He's late, but He's not. Throughout Scripture we read about people becoming impatient with God’s timing. The Israelites waited and waited for the promised Messiah. Some gave up hope. But Simeon and Anna did not. They were in the temple daily praying and waiting (Luke 2:25–26, 37). And their faith was rewarded. They got to see the infant Jesus when Mary and Joseph brought Him to be dedicated (vv. 27–32, 38).

When we become discouraged because God doesn't respond according to our timetable, Christmas reminds us that “when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son . . . that we might receive adoption to sonship” (Gal. 4:4–5). 모두를 위한 기쁨

싱가포르에서 열린 기독서적출판 컨퍼런스의 마지막 날에, 50 개국에서 온 280명의 참가자가 단체사진을 찍기 위해 호텔 야외광장에 모였습니다. 사진사는 이층 발코니에서 여러 각도로 사진을 많이 찍고 나서 마침내 “다 끝났습니다.”라고 말했습니다. 그때, 모인 사람 중 한 사람이 안도의 목소리로 “기쁘다!” 라고 소리쳤습니다. 즉시 누군가가 “구주 오셨네”라고 노래하며 화답했습니다. 그러자
다른 사람들도 같이 노래를 따라 부르기 시작했습니다. 곧 모든 사람이 멋진 하모니를 이루어 그 친숙한 캐럴을 불렀습니다. 정말로 잊지 못할 감동적인 화합과 기쁨의 장면이었습니다.

누가가 전하는 성탄절 이야기에서, 천사는 예수님의 탄생을 목자들에게 선 포 하 며 이 렇 게 이 야 기 했 습 니 다 . “무서워하지 말라 보라 내가 온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식을 너희에게 전하노라 오늘 다윗의 동네에 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨으니 곧 그리스도 주시니라”(누가복음 2:10-11).

그 기쁨의 소식은 소수의 몇 사람만을 위한 것이 아니라 모든 사람들을 위한 것이었습니다. “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니”(요한복음 3:16).

삶을 변화시키는 예수님의 메시지를 다른 사람들에게 전할 때, 우리는 “하나님의 영광의 의와 놀라운 사랑”을 선포하는 전 세계의
합창대와 함께 하는 것입니다. “기쁘다 구주 오셨네!”

Joy for All

On the final day of a Christian publishing conference in Singapore, 280 participants from 50 countries gathered in the outdoor plaza of a hotel for a group photo. From the second-floor balcony, the photographer took many shots from different angles before finally saying, “We’re through.” A voice from the crowd shouted with relief, “Well, joy to the world!” Immediately, someone replied by singing, “The Lord is come.” Others began to join in. Soon the entire group was singing the familiar carol in beautiful harmony. It was a moving display of unity and joy that I will never forget.

In Luke’s account of the Christmas story, an angel announced the birth of Jesus to a group of shepherds saying, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (Luke 2:10–11).

The joy was not for a few people, but for all. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son” (John 3:16).

As we share the life-changing message of Jesus with others, we join the worldwide chorus in proclaiming “the glories of His righteousness and wonders of His love.”

수용소의 성탄절

독일의 유명한 마틴 니몰러 목사는 히틀러를 공개적으로 반대했다는 이유로 거의 8년을 나치 강제수용소에서 지냈습니다. 1944년 성탄 전야에, 니몰러 목사는 다카우에 있는 동료 수감자들에게 이런 희망의 메시지를 들려주었습니다. “사랑하는 친구들이여, 이번 성탄절에는...... 베들레헴의 아기를 통해서, 우리를 무겁게 짓누르는 모든 짐을 우리와 함께 지려고 오 신 주 님 을 바 라 봅 시 다 . 하나님과 우리를 연결하는 다리를 하나님께서 직접 놓아주셨습니다! 높은 곳에서부터 새벽빛이 우리를 찾아왔습니다!”

성탄절에 우리는 하나님이 그리스도를 통해 우리가 어디에 있든 찾아오셔서 우리들 사이에 갈라져 있는 틈에 다리를 놓아주셨다는 복음을 맞이합니다. 하나님은 어둠에 갇힌 우리에게 빛으로 오셔서, 우리를 짓누르는 슬픔, 죄의식, 외로움의 짐을 가볍게 해주십니다.

감옥에 갇혀 암울했던 그 성탄 전야에 니몰러 목사는 이런 기쁜 소식을 함께 나누었습니다. “목자들을 두르고 있던 광채로부터 한 줄기 밝은 빛이 나와 우리의 어둠을 비춰줄 것입니다.” 그의 말은 이사야 선지자가 했던 말을 생각나게 해줍니다. “흑암에 행하던 백성이 큰 빛을 보고 사망의 그늘진 땅에 거주하던 자에게 빛이 비치도다”(이사야 9:2).

오늘 우리가 어디에 있든지, 예수님은 우리의 어둠의 세계를 뚫고 들어와 주님의 기쁨과 즐거움을 전해주십니다!

Christmas in Captivity

Rev. Martin Niemoller, a prominent German pastor, spent nearly eight years in Nazi concentration camps because he openly opposed Hitler. On Christmas Eve 1944, Niemoller spoke these words of hope to his fellow prisoners in Dachau:  “My dear friends, on this Christmas . . . let us seek, in the Babe of Bethlehem, the One who came to us in order to bear with us everything that weighs heavily upon us. . . . God Himself has built a bridge from Himself to us! A dawn from on high has visited us!”

At Christmas we embrace the good news that God, in Christ, has come to us wherever we are and has bridged the gap between us. He invades our prison of darkness with His light and lifts the load of sorrow, guilt, or loneliness that weighs us down. 

On that bleak Christmas Eve in prison, Niemoller shared this good news:  “Out of the brilliance that surrounded the shepherds a shining ray will fall into our darkness.” His words remind us of the prophet Isaiah, who prophetically said, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned” (Isa. 9:2).

주님께 무엇을 드릴 수 있을까?

어느 해인가, 교회의 성탄절 장식을 담당하던 사람들이 “크리스마스 목록”이라는 주제로 성탄절 장식을 하기로 했습니다. 주로 사용되는 금색 은색의 반짝이는 장식물 대신, 그들은 성도들에게 빨간색 혹은 초록색 표를 나누어준 다음, 앞면에는 자기가 예수님께 받고 싶은 선물을 적고 뒷면에는 그들이 축하드리는 예수님께 드리고 싶은 선물을 적게 하였습니다.

당신이라면 어떤 선물을 받고, 어떤 선물을 드리고 싶습니까? 성경은 우리에게 많은 아이디어를 줍니다. 하나님께서 우리의 모든 필요를 채워주신다고 약속하시기 때문에, 우리는 새 직장이나 재정 문제의 도움, 우리나 다른 사람의 건강회복, 또는 관계 회복 등을 구할 수 있습니다. 그리고 하나님을 섬기기 위해 우리가 갖추어야 할 영적인 은사는 어떤 것들일까 궁금해 할 수도 있는데, 이러한 은사들에 대해서는 로마서 12장과 고린도전서 12장에 많이 열거되어 있습니다. 또는 사랑과 희락, 화평, 오래 참음, 자비, 양선, 충성, 온유, 절제(갈라디아서 5:22-23)와 같은 성령의 열매를 더 많이 맺을 수 있기를 구할 수도 있습니다.

그러나 우리가 받을 수 있는 가장 중요한 선물은 하나님의 선물인 그분의 아들 우리 구주이시며, 그와 함께 주어지는 용서와 회복, 그리고 지금부터 시작하여 영원에 이르는 영적인 삶의 약속입니다. 그리고 우리가 드릴 수 있는 가장 중요한 선물은 우리의 마음을 예수님께 드리는 것입니다.

What Can I Give Him?

One year, those responsible for decorating their church for Christmas decided to use the theme of “Christmas lists.” Instead of decorating with the usual shiny gold and silver ornaments, they gave each person a red or green tag. On one side they were to write down the gift they would like from Jesus, and on the other they were to list the gift they would give to the One whose birth they were celebrating.

If you were to do this, what gift would you ask for and what would you offer? The Bible gives us lots of ideas. God promises to supply all our needs, so we might ask for a new job, help with financial problems, physical healing for ourselves or others, or a restored relationship. We might be wondering what our spiritual gift is that equips us for God’s service. Many of these are listed in Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12. Or we might long to show more of the fruit of the Holy Spirit: to be more loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind and good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled (Gal. 5:22–23).

The most important gift we can ever receive is God’s gift of His Son, our Savior, and with Him forgiveness, restoration, and the promise of spiritual life that begins now and lasts forever. And the most important gift we can ever give is to give Jesus our heart. - MARION STROUD

최고의 선물

뉴잉글랜드 북부 지역에서의 한 겨울 수련회에서 어떤 사람이 “지금껏 받은 성탄절 선물 중 가장 맘에 드는 선물이 무엇이었습니까?”라고 물었습니다. 운동선수처럼 보이는 한 남자가 무척 대답하고 싶어 하는 것처럼 보였습니다. 그는 옆에 있는 친구를 슬쩍 보며 “그건 어렵지 않아요.”라고 말했습니다. “몇 년 전 대학을 졸업하며 저는 당연히 프로풋볼 선수가 되리라 생각했습니다. 하지만 뜻대로 되지 않자 화가 났습니다. 저는 쓰라린 감정에 빠져 저를 도와주려고 했던 사람들에게도 쓴 감정으로 대했습니다.”

“그 후 두 번째 맞는 성탄절, 풋볼을 안 한 지 2년 째 되던 때에 ‘이 친구’의 교회에 성탄절 연극을 보러 갔습니다.”라고 그는 친구를 가리키며 말했습니다. “예수님을 원해서가 아니라 단지 성탄절 연극에 나오는 조카를 보기 위해서였지요. 우습게 들릴 것 같아 그때
있었던 일을 말하기가 쉽지 않지만, 아이들이 한참 연극을 하는데, 예수님을 만나고 있는 목자들과 천사들이 있는 그 자리에 저도 함께 있어야한다는 생각이 들었습니다. 사람들이 ‘고요한 밤, 거룩한 밤’ 노래를 다 부르기까지 저는 그 자리에 앉아서 그냥 울고만 있었습니다.”

“저는 바로 그날 밤 최고의 성탄절 선물을 받았습니다. 이 친구가 가족들을 집으로 보낸 후 제게 예수님을 어떻게 만나는지 말해주었거든요.”라고 그는 다시 친구를 가리키며 말했습니다.

바로 그때 그의 친구가 크게 소리쳤습니다. “그리고 여러분, 그것이 저에게도 최고의 성탄절 선물이었습니다.”

이번 성탄절에는 기쁘고도 알기 쉬운 예수님의 탄생 이야기를 다른 사람들에게 전하게 되기를 바랍니다.

The Best Gift Ever

At a winter retreat in northern New England, one of the men asked the question, “What was your favorite Christmas gift ever?”

One athletic man seemed eager to answer. “That’s easy,” he said, glancing at his friend next to him. “A few years back, I finished college thinking I was a sure bet to play professional football. When it didn’t happen, I was angry. Bitterness ate at me, and I shared that bitterness with anyone who tried to help me.”

“On the second Christmas—and second season without football—I went to a Christmas play at this guy’s church,” he said, gesturing toward his friend. “Not because I wanted Jesus, but just to see my niece in her Christmas pageant. It’s hard to describe what happened because it sounds silly, but right in the middle of that kids’ play, I felt like I needed to be with those shepherds and angels meeting Jesus. When that crowd finished singing ‘Silent Night,’ I just sat there weeping.

“I got my best Christmas present ever that very night,” he said, again pointing to his friend, “when this guy sent his family home without him so he could tell me how to meet Jesus.”
It was then that his friend piped up: “And that, guys, was my best Christmas present ever.”

This Christmas, may the joyful simplicity of the story of Jesus’s birth be the story we tell to others. - RANDY KILGORE

개인적인 이야기

태어난 지 겨우 몇 시간밖에 되지 않은 아기가 뉴욕의 한 교회 밖에 있는 크리스마스 장식의 구유 안에 버려졌습니다. 절박했던 젊은 엄마가 아기를 따뜻하게 감싸서 아기가 발견될 만한 곳에 두었던 것입니다. 우리에게 그녀를 판단하려는 마음이 혹 들더라도, 그보다는 이 아기가 이제 세상에 살 수 있는 기회를 가지게 된 것에 감사할 수 있습니다.

나에게는 이 일이 바로 나 자신의 일과도 같습니다. 나도 입양아로서, 태어난 당시의 상황에 대해서는 아무것도 모릅니다. 하지만 나는 결코 버려졌다고 느낀 적이 없었습니다. 내가 삶의 기회를 갖기를 바라셨던 두 어머니가 계신다는 것을 확신하기 때문입니다. 한 분은 나에게 생명을 주셨고, 다른 한 분은 나에게 자신의 삶을 바치셨습니다.

출애굽기에서 우리는 절박한 상황에 놓인 한 사랑하는 어머니를 봅니다. 바로가 유대인들에게서 태어난 모든 사내아이들을 죽이라고 명령하였습니다(1:22). 그래서 모세의 어머니는 할 수 있을 때까지 그를 숨기다가, 모세가 석 달째 되던 때 물이 새지 않는 바구니에 그를 넣어서 나일 강에 두었습니다. 만일 그 계획이 아기가 공주에게 구조되어 바로의 궁전에서 자라고 결과적으로 그의 민족을 노예에서 해방하는 것이었다면, 그 계획은 완벽하게 이루어진 셈입니다.

한 절박한 어머니가 아기에게 기회를 줄 때, 하나님은 거기서부터 책임을 져주십니다. 하나님은 가능한 가장 창조적인 방법들로 언제나 그렇게 해주십니다.

A Personal Story

A baby just hours old was left in a manger in a Christmas nativity outside a New York church. A young, desperate mother had wrapped him warmly and placed him where he would be discovered. If we are tempted to judge her, we can instead be thankful this baby will now have a chance in life.

This gets personal for me. As an adopted child myself, I have no idea about the circumstances surrounding my birth. But I have never felt abandoned. Of this much I am certain: I have two moms who wanted me to have a chance in life. One gave life to me; the other invested her life in me.

In Exodus we read about a loving mother in a desperate situation. Pharaoh had ordered the murder of all baby boys born to the Jewish people (1:22). So Moses’s mother hid him as long as she could. When Moses was three months old, she put him in a watertight basket and placed the basket in the Nile River. If the plan was to have the baby rescued by a princess, grow up in Pharaoh’s palace, and eventually deliver his people out of slavery, it worked perfectly.

When a desperate mother gives her child a chance, God can take it from there. He has a habit of doing that—in the most creative ways imaginable.  - TIM GUSTAFSON

널리 퍼지는 기쁨

자넷이 영어를 가르치러 외국에 있는 학교에 갔을 때 학교의 분위기는 우울하고 침체되어 있었습니다. 사람들은 다 자신의 일들을 하고 있었지만, 어느 누구도 행복해보이지 않았습니다. 서로를 도와주거나 격려해주지도 않았습니다. 그러나 자넷은 하나님이 그녀를 위해 해주신 모든 것에 감사하며 자기가 하는 모든 일 속에서 감사를 표현했습니다. 미소를 지으며 친절했으며, 사람들을 기꺼이
도와주었습니다. 그리고 노래와 찬송가를 흥얼거렸습니다.

자넷이 자신의 기쁨을 사람들과 나누자 학교 분위기가 조금씩 달라져, 하나둘씩 사람들이 미소를 짓고 서로를 도와주기 시작했습니다. 학교를 방문한 교육행정관이 왜 학교가 그렇게 달라졌는지를 교장에게 묻자, 기독교인이 아니었던 교장은 “예수님이 기쁨을 가져다주네요.”라고 대답했습니다. 자넷에게 주님의 기쁨이 차고 넘쳐 주변 사람들에게까지 흘러갔던 것입니다.

누가복음에는 하나님이 평범한 목자들에게 천사를 보내어 놀라운 탄생의 소식을 전하게 하셨다고 기록되어 있습니다. 천사는 그 갓난아기가 “온 백성에게 큰 기쁨이 될 것이다”라는 놀라운 선포를 하였고(누가복음 2:10), 예수님은 참으로 그렇게 되셨습니다.

그 이후로 이 복음은 여러 세기를 거쳐 우리에게 전해졌으며, 이제는 우리가 이 세상에 그리스도의 기쁨의 소식을 전하는 사람들입니다. 우리 안에 성령님이 거하심으로, 우리는 예수님을 본받아 다른 이들을 섬기면서 예수님의 기쁨을 전하는 일을 계속합니다.

Spreading Joy

When Janet went to teach English in a school overseas, she found the atmosphere gloomy and depressing. People did their jobs, but no one seemed happy. They didn't help or encourage one another. But Janet, grateful for all that God had done for her, expressed it in everything she did. She smiled. She was friendly. She went out of her way to help people. She hummed songs and hymns.

Little by little, as Janet shared her joy, the atmosphere at the school changed. One by one people began to smile and help each other. When a visiting administrator asked the principal why his school was so different, the principal, who was not a believer, responded, “Jesus brings joy.” Janet was filled to overflowing with the joy of the Lord and it spilled over to those around her.

The gospel of Luke tells us that God sent an angel to ordinary shepherds to deliver an extraordinary birth announcement. The angel made the surprising proclamation that the newborn baby “will cause great joy for all the people” (Luke 2:10), which indeed He did.

Since then this message has spread through the centuries to us, and now we are Christ's messengers of joy to the world. Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we continue the practice of spreading the joy of Jesus as we follow His example and serve others. - JULIE ACKERMAN LINK

원수사랑

1950년에 한국전쟁이 일어났을 때, 15살이었던 김진경은 조국을 지키기 위해 국군에 입대했습니다. 하지만 그는 곧 자신이 전투의 두려움을 이겨낼 준비가 되어 있지 않다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 자기 주위에서 어린 동료들이 죽어가는 것을 보며 그는 하나님께 살려달라고 매달리며, 살려만 주신다면 원수들을 사랑하는 것을 배우겠다고 약속했습니다.

65년이 지난 후, 김 박사는 응답이 된 그 기도를 되돌아보았습니다. 수십 년 동안 고아들을 보살피고 북한과 중국의 아이들의 교육을 도우면서, 그는 한때 원수로 여겼던 사람들 중 많은 이들과 친구가 되었습니다. 그는 지금 정치적인 입장은 멀리하고, 대신
예수님에 대한 믿음의 표현으로 자신을 ‘사랑주의자’라고 부릅니다.

요나 선지자는 이와는 다른 유산을 남겼습니다. 큰 물고기 뱃속에서 극적으로 구조되었음에도 그의 마음은 변하지 않았습니다. 그 후 요나는 하나님께 순종하긴 했으나, 주님이 그의 원수들에게 자비를 베푸시는 것을 보느니 차라리 죽는 게 낫다고 말했습니다(요나 4:1-2,8).

요나가 니느웨 사람들을 마침내 사랑했는지는 단지 추측만 할 수 있을 뿐입니다. 그보다 우리는 우리 자신에게 이렇게 물어야 합니다. ‘우리는 두려워하고 싫어하는 사람들에게 요나와 같은 태도를 보일 것인가? 아니면 하나님이 우리에게 자비를 베푸신 것처럼 우리의 적들을 사랑할 수 있는 능력을 달라고 하나님께 간구할 것인가?’

Enemy Love

When war broke out in 1950, fifteen-year-old Kim Chin-Kyung joined the South Korean army to defend his homeland. He soon found, however, that he wasn’t ready for the horrors of combat. As young friends died around him, he begged God for his life and promised that, if allowed to live, he would learn to love his enemies.

Sixty-five years later, Dr. Kim reflected on that answered prayer. Through decades of caring for orphans and assisting in the education of North Korean and Chinese young people, he has won many friends among those he once regarded as enemies. Today he shuns political labels. Instead he calls himself a loveist as an expression of his faith in Jesus.

The prophet Jonah left a different kind of legacy. Even a dramatic rescue from the belly of a big fish didn’t transform his heart. Although he eventually obeyed God, Jonah said he’d rather die than watch the Lord show mercy to his enemies (Jonah 4:1–2, 8).

We can only guess as to whether Jonah ever learned to care for the people of Nineveh. Instead we are left to wonder about ourselves. Will we settle for his attitude toward those we fear and hate? Or will we ask God for the ability to love our enemies as He has shown mercy to us? - MART DEHAAN

너희는 나를 누구라 하느냐?

알버트 아인슈타인은 1929년 ‘새터데이 이브닝 포스트’와의 인터뷰에서 이렇게 말했습니다. “나는 어렸을 때 성경과 탈무드를 통해 교육을 받았습니다. 나는 유대인이지만 나사렛 예수의 특별한 모습에 감복합니다...... 누구나 복음서를 읽으면 살아있는 예수님을 느껴서 알게 됩니다. 예수님의 인격은 그분의 모든 말 속에 살아 움직입니다. 신화라면 그처럼 생생할 수 없습니다.”

신약성경은 예수님에게 뭔가 특별한 점이 있다고 느꼈던 예수님 당시 사람들의 다른 예들을 보여주고 있습니다. 예수님이 제자들에게 “사람들이 인자를 누구라 하느냐”고 물으셨을 때, 그들은 더러는 세례요한, 더러는 엘리야, 어떤 이는 예레미야나 선지자 중의 하나라고 말한다고 대답했습니다(마태복음 16:14). 이스라엘의 위대한 선지자들과 함께 이름이 불리는 것은 분명히 찬사였지만, 예수님은 그런 찬사를 구하시지 않았습니다. 예수님은 그들이 어떻게 이해하고 있는지, 그리고 믿음이 어떤지를 보려고 하셨습니다. 그래서 주님은 그들에게 다시 물으셨습니다. “너희는 나를 누구라 하느냐”(16:15).

베드로의 다음과 같은 고백은 예수님이 진실로 어떤 분이신가를 완전하게 표현해주었습니다. “주는 그리스도시요 살아 계신 하나님의 아들이시니이다”(16절).

예수님은 우리가 예수님이 누구시고 그의 구원의 사랑이 어떠한 것인지를 알기 원하십니다. 이것이 바로 “너희는 나(예수님)를 누구라 하느냐”라는 질문에 우리 각자가 언젠가는 반드시 대답해야 하는 이유입니다.

Who Do You Say He Is?

In a 1929 Saturday Evening Post interview, Albert Einstein said, “As a child I received instruction both in the Bible and in the Talmud. I am a Jew, but I am enthralled by the luminous figure of the Nazarene. . . . No one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus. His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life.”

The New Testament Scriptures give us other examples of Jesus’s countrymen who sensed there was something special about Him. When Jesus asked His followers, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” they replied that some said He was John the Baptist, others said He was Elijah, and others thought He was Jeremiah or one of the prophets (Matt. 16:14). To be named with the great prophets of Israel was certainly a compliment, but Jesus wasn’t seeking compliments. He was searching their understanding and looking for faith. So He asked a second question: “But what about you? . . . Who do you say I am?” (16:15).

Peter’s declaration fully expressed the truth of Jesus’s identity: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (v. 16).

Jesus longs for us to know Him and His rescuing love. This is why each of us must eventually answer the question, “Who do you say Jesus is?” - BILL CROWDER
