너무나 인간적인

영국 작가 에블린 워는 자신의 성격적인 결함이 두드러지도록 글을 썼습니다. 나중에 그 소설가는 기독교로 개종하였지만, 그 이후에도 여전히 방황했습니다. 어느 날 한 여자가 이렇게 물었습니다. “워씨, 어떻게 그렇게 행동하면서 자신을 그리스도인이라고 할 수 있어요?” 그러자 그는 이렇게 대답했습니다. “부인, 말씀하시는 대로 제가 나쁜 사람일지 모르지만, 제게 종교가 없다면 저는 아마 사람도 아닐 겁니다.”

워는 바울 사도가 서술하고 있는 내적인 갈등을 겪고 있었던 것입니다. “선을 행하길 원함은 내게 있으나 선을 행하는 것은 없노라”(로마서 7:18). 바울은 또 이렇게 말합니다. “우리가 율법은 신령한 줄 알거니와 나는 육신에 속하여 죄 아래 팔렸도다”(14절). 그는 계속 설명합니다. “내 속사람으로는 하나님의 법을 즐거워하되 내 지체 속에서......나를 사로잡는 것을 보는도다......이 사망의 몸에서 누가 나를 건져내랴”(22-24절). 그러다가 이렇게 아주 기쁜 답을 내놓습니다. “우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님께 감사하리로다”(25절).

우리의 잘못과 구주가 필요함을 인정하며 예수 그리스도를 믿을 때 우리는 즉시 새 피조물이 됩니다. 그러나 우리가 영적으로 다듬어져가는 데에는 일생 동안의 긴 여정이 필요합니다. 요한 사도는 그것을 제대로
보았습니다. “우리가 지금은 하나님의 자녀라 장래에 어떻게 될 것은 아직 나타나지 아니하였으나 그가 나타나시면 우리가 그와 같은 줄을 아는 것은 그의 참 모습 그대로 볼 것이기 때문이니”(요한1서 3:2).

All Too Human

British writer Evelyn Waugh wielded his words in a way that accentuated his character flaws. Eventually the novelist converted to Christianity, yet he still struggled. One day a woman asked him, “Mr. Waugh, how can you behave as you do and still call yourself a Christian?” He replied, “Madam, I may be as bad as you say. But believe me, were it not for my religion, I would scarcely be a human being.”

Waugh was waging the internal battle the apostle Paul describes: “I want to do what is right, but I can’t” (Rom. 7:18 nlt). He also says, “The trouble is not with the law . . . [It] is with me, for I am all too human” (v. 14 nlt). He further explains, “In my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me . . . . Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?” (vv. 22–24). And then the exultant answer: “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (v. 25).

When we come in faith to Christ, admitting our wrongdoing and need of a Savior, we immediately become a new creation. But our spiritual formation remains a lifelong journey. As John the disciple observed: “Now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But . . . when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2). - TIM GUSTAFSON

천둥과 번개

오래 전 친구와 몇 군데 비버 서식지 호수를 돌아다니며 낚시를 하고 있었습니다. 그런데 비가 오기 시작하여 가까운 작은 사시나무숲에 들어가 비를 피했지만 비는 그치지 않고 계속 내렸습니다. 그래서 우리는 낚시를 그만하기로 하고 트럭으로 뛰어갔습니다. 내가 트럭 문을 열자마자 번개가 그 사시나무 숲을 쳐서 우레와 같은 불덩이가 나뭇잎들과 껍질들을 쳐내고 몇 가지들을 새까맣게 태웠습니다. 그리고는 고요해졌습니다.

우리는 놀랐고 또 두려웠습니다. 우리 아이다호 계곡에는 번개가 번쩍이고 천둥이 치고는 합니다. 아슬 아슬하게 피했던 그 일이 있었음에도 나는 천둥 번개를 사랑합니다. 자연 그대로의 그 힘을 사랑합니다. 강도 높은 전압! 충격! 놀라움과 두려움! 이 땅과 그 안에 있는 모든 것들이 흔들리고 벌벌 떱니다. 그리고는 평화가 옵니다.

나는 천둥과 번개가 본질적으로 엄청나고 불가항력적인 능력으로 말씀하시는 하나님의 음성을 상징하기에 그들을 좋아합니다(욥기 37:4). “여호와의 소리가 화염을 가르시도다......여호와께서 자기 백성에게 힘을 주심이여 여호와께서 자기 백성에게 평강의 복을 주시리로다”(시편 29:7,11). 주님은 우리가 견뎌내고 인내하고 친절하고, 조용히 앉아있거나 일어나 가게 하시고, 또는 아무것도 하지 않게 할 힘을 주십니다.

평화의 하나님이 당신과 함께하기를 바랍니다.

Thunder and Lightning

Many years ago a friend and I were fishing a series of beaver ponds when it started to rain. We took cover under a nearby grove of quaking aspen, but the rain continued to fall. So we decided to call it a day and run for the truck. I had just opened the door when lightning struck the aspen grove with a thunderous fireball that stripped leaves and bark off the trees, leaving a few limbs smoldering. And then there was silence.

We were shaken and awed.

Lightning flashes and thunder rolls across our Idaho valley. I love it—despite my close call. I love the raw power. Voltage! Percussion! Shock and awe! The earth and everything in it trembles and shakes. And then there is peace.

I love lightning and thunder primarily because they are symbols of God's voice (Job 37:4), speaking with stupendous, irresistible power through His Word. “The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning . . . The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace” (Ps. 29:7, 11). He gives strength to endure, to be patient, to be kind, to sit quietly, to get up and go, to do nothing at all.

헛되지 않음

내가 아는 어떤 재정전문가는 현실적인 투자방법에 대해 이렇게 말합니다. “최선을 기대하되 최악에 대비하십시오.” 우리가 일상에서 내리는 거의 모든 결정은 어떤 결과를 초래할지 알 수 없습니다. 그러나 어떤 일이 일어나더라도 우리가 따를 수 있는 길이 하나 있는데, 종국에 그 수고가 헛되지 않을 것을 우리는 압니다.

바울 사도는 도덕적 타락의 도시로 알려진 고린도에서 예수님을 따르는 사람들과 일 년을 같이 지냈습니다. 그는 그곳을 떠난 후 그들에게 보낸 편지에서 실망하지도 말고 또 그들이 그리스도를 위해 증거한 것들이 아무 소용이 없다고 생각해서도 안 된다고 강조했습니다. 그는 주님이 다시 오셔서 승리 가운데 사망이
삼킨바 될 날이 올 것이라고 그들에게 확신시켜주었습니다(고린도전서 15:52-55).

예수님께 변함없이 충성하는 것이 힘들고 낙심되고 위험할 수도 있겠지만 결코 무의미하거나 헛되지 않습니다. 우리가 주님과 동행하며 주님의 살아계심과 전능하심을 증언할 때, 우리의 삶은 절대 헛되지 않습니다! 우리는 그것을 확신할 수 있습니다.

Not In Vain

A financial advisor I know describes the reality of investing money by saying, “Hope for the best and be prepared for the worst.” With almost every decision we make in life there is uncertainty about the outcome. Yet there is one course we can follow where no matter what happens, we know that in the end it will not be a wasted effort.

The apostle Paul spent a year with the followers of Jesus in Corinth, a city known for its moral corruption. After he left, he urged them in a follow-up letter not to be discouraged or feel that their witness for Christ was of no value. He assured them that a day is coming when the Lord will return and even death will be swallowed up in victory (1 Cor. 15:52–55).

Remaining true to Jesus may be difficult, discouraging, and even dangerous, but it is never pointless or wasted. As we walk with the Lord and witness to His presence and power, our lives are not in vain! We can be sure of that. - DAVID MCCASLAND

부족함이 전혀 없음

아무것도 챙기지 않고 여행을 떠나는 것을 상상해보십시오. 기본적인 필수품, 갈아입을 옷, 돈이나 신용카드 등, 아무것도 없이 말입니다. 아주 미련하고 겁나는 일처럼 들리지 않습니까? 하지만, 예수님이 그의 열두 제자들에게 가서 가르치고 병을 고치라고 첫 사명을 주시며 보내실 때 바로 그와 같이 하라고 말씀하셨습니다. “여행을 위하여 지팡이 외에는 양식이나 배낭이나 전대의 돈이나 아무것도 가지지 말며 신만 신고 두 벌 옷도 입지 말라”(마가복음 6:8-9).

그러나 나중에 예수님은 자신이 떠난 후의 사역을 준비시키시며 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “이제는 전대 있는 자는 가질 것이요 배낭도 그리하고 검 없는 자는 겉옷을 팔아 살지어다”(누가복음 22:36).

그러면, 여기서 말하는 요점이 무엇 일까요? 그것은 공급해주시는 하나님을 신뢰하라는 것입니다.

예수님은 제자들의 첫 번째 전도여행을 돌아보시며 그들에게 “내가 너희를 전대와 배낭과 신발도 없이 보내었을 때에 부족한 것이 있더냐”라고 물으시자 그들은 “없었나이다”라고 대답했습니다(35절). 제자들은 하나님이 그들에게 하라고 하신 일들을 행하는 데 필요한 모든 것들을 다 공급받았습니다. 주님은 주님의 일을 행할 권능과 함께(마가복음 6:7) 그들의 필요를 공급해주셨습니다.

우리의 필요를 채워주시는 하나님을 신뢰하고 있습니까? 그러면서도 개인적으로 필요한 것들을 함께 챙기고 계획하고 계십니까? 주님은 우리가 주님의 일을 행하는 데 필요한 것을 공급해주신다는 믿음을 가지도록 합시다.

Lack Nothing

Imagine going on a trip without luggage. No basic necessities. No change of clothing. No money or credit cards. Sounds both unwise and terrifying, doesn’t it?

But that’s exactly what Jesus told His twelve disciples to do when He sent them out on their first mission to preach and heal. “Take nothing for the journey except a staff,” said Jesus. “No bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt” (Mark 6:8–9).

Yet later on when Jesus was preparing them for their work after He was gone, He told His disciples, “If you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one” (Luke 22:36).

So, what’s the point here? It’s about trusting God to supply.

When Jesus referred back to that first trip, He asked the disciples, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” And they answered, “Nothing” (v. 35). The disciples had everything they needed to carry out what God had called them to do. He was able to supply them with the power to do His work (Mark 6:7).

Do we trust God to supply our needs? Are we also taking personal responsibility and planning? Let’s have faith that He will give us what we need to carry out His work. - POH FANG CHIA

하나님의 얼굴

나는 작가로서의 대부분의 시간을 고통의 문제를 다루는데 보냈습니다. 절대 아물지 않는 오래된 상처를 만지는 것처럼 나는 반복해서 같은 문제로 되돌아갑니다. 독자들로부터 그들의 고통스러운 이야기를 들으면서 나는 나의 의문에 대한 많은 사람들의 예들을 실제로 접하게 됩니다. 나는 청소년 목회자가 나에게 전화를 걸어와 자기 아내와 딸이 감염된 피를 수혈 받고 에이즈로 죽어가고 있다고 말한 것을 기억합니다. 그는 “어떻게 제가 청소년들에게 사랑의 하나님에 대해 말할 수 있겠습니까?”라고 물었습니다.

그러나 한때 나를 괴롭혔던, “하나님이 살펴보고 계실까?”라는 한 가지 질문은 이제 더 이상 나를 괴롭히지 않습니다. 그 질문에 답할 수 있는 한 가지 유일한 방법을 알았기 때문입니다. 그 답은 예수님입니다. 하나님은 예수님을 통하여 우리에게 한 얼굴을 보여주셨습니다. 이 신음하는 땅 위에서 고통당하는 자들을 하나님이 어떻게 보시는지 궁금하다면 그 얼굴을 바라보십시오.

“하나님이 살펴보고 계실까?” 하나님의 아들 예수님이 모든 아픔과 슬픔, 고통, 영원한 죽음을 완전히 없애버리고 우리를 대신하여 돌아가신 것이 그 질문의 답입니다. “어두운 데에 빛이 비치라 말씀하셨던 그 하나님께서 예수 그리스도의 얼굴에 있는 하나님의 영광을 아는 빛을 우리 마음에 비추셨느니라”(고린도후서 4:6).

God’s Face

Much of my career as a writer has revolved around the problem of pain. I return again and again to the same questions, as if fingering an old wound that never quite heals. I hear from readers of my books, and their anguished stories give human faces to my doubts. I remember a youth pastor calling me after he had learned that his wife and baby daughter were dying of AIDS because of a tainted blood transfusion. “How can I talk to my youth group about a loving God?” he asked.

I have learned to not even attempt an answer to these “why” questions. Why did the youth pastor’s wife happen to get the one tainted bottle of blood? Why does a tornado hit one town and skip over another? Why do prayers for physical healing go unanswered?

One question, however, no longer gnaws at me as it once did: “Does God care?” I know of only one way to answer that question, and the answer is Jesus. In Jesus, God gave us a face. If you wonder how God feels about the suffering on this groaning planet, look at that face.

“Does God care?” His Son’s death on our behalf, which will ultimately destroy all pain, sorrow, suffering, and death for eternity, answers that question. “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ” (2 Cor. 4:6). - PHILIP YANCEY

모두 맡겨라

대학 시절 농구팀에서 농구를 했을 때, 시즌이 시작될 때마다 체육관에 들어가 코치가 무엇을 시키든 전적으로 따르겠다고 의식적으로 다짐을 했습니다.

내가 만일 “코치님, 저 왔어요. 저는 드리블과 슛만 할 겁니다. 몇 바퀴 뛰라든가, 수비하라든가, 땀을 흠뻑 흘리라고 요구하지는 마세요!”라고 했다면, 팀에 전혀 도움이 되지 않았을 것입니다.

성공적인 운동선수라면 누구든 코치를 신뢰하고 팀의 최선을 위해 그가 요구하는 어떤 것도 따라야 합니다.

그리스도 안에서 우리는 하나님의 “산 제사”(로마서 12:1)가 되어야 합니다. 우리는 구주이신 주님께 “주님을 신뢰합니다. 주 님 께 서 무 엇 을 원 하 시 든 그대로 하겠습니다.”라고 말해야 합니다. 그러면 주님은 우리 마음을 새롭게 함으로 우리를 “변화시키셔서” 주님을 기쁘게 하는 일에 집중할 수 있게 해 주십니다.

하나님은 우리에게 미리 예비시키지 않으신 어떤 일을 하라고 절대 요구하시지 않는다는 것을 알면 도움이 됩니다. 바울이 우리에게 일러주는 것처럼, “하나님께서 우리에게 주신 은혜를 따라, 우리는 저마다 다른 신령한 선물을 가지고 있습니다”(6절, 새번역).

우리의 삶을 하나님께 의지할 수 있다는 것을 알면, 하나님이 우리를 창조하셨고 우리가 하나님 안에서 그런 노력을 할 수 있도록 돕고 계신다는 것을 알게 됨으로 우리는 더 강건해져서 우리 자신을 하나님께 내맡길 수 있게 됩니다.

Abandon It All

When I played college basketball, I made a conscious decision at the beginning of each season to walk into that gym and dedicate myself totally to my coach—doing whatever he might ask me to do.

It would not have benefited my team for me to announce, “Hey, Coach! Here I am. I want to shoot baskets and dribble the ball, but don’t ask me to run laps, play defense, and get all sweaty!”

Every successful athlete has to trust the coach enough to do whatever the coach asks them to do for the good of the team.

In Christ, we are to become God’s “living sacrifice” (Rom. 12:1). We say to our Savior and Lord: “I trust You. Whatever You want me to do, I am willing.” Then He “transforms” us by renewing our minds to focus on the things that please Him.

It’s helpful to know that God will never call on us to do something for which He has not already equipped us. As Paul reminds us, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us” (v. 6).

Knowing that we can trust God with our lives, we can abandon ourselves to Him, strengthened by the knowledge that He created us and is helping us to make this effort in Him. - DAVE BRANON

생명의 호흡

춥고 서리가 내린 어느 아침, 딸과 함께 학교로 걸어가면서 우리는 입김이 하얗게 되는 것을 보며 즐거워했습니다. 우리는 서로가 만드는 이런저런 모양의 하얀 입김을 보면서 킥킥 웃었습니다. 딸과 함께 있고, 살아있다는 사실이 너무 기뻐서 나에게는 그 순간이 마치 선물처럼 느껴졌습니다.

평소에는 안 보이지만 추울 때 눈에 보이는 호흡은 나에게 우리의 호흡과 생명의 근원이신 창조주 하나님을 생각하게 해주었습니다. 땅의 흙으로 아담을 지으시고 생기를 불어넣으신 하나님이 우리에게도,
그리고 모든 살아 있는 피조물에게도 생명을 주십니다(창세기 2:7). 모든 것이, 아무런 생각 없이 숨 쉬는 바로 그 호흡마저도 하나님으로부터 옵니다.

우리는 현대 문명의 이기와 기술을 누리면서, 우리가 어떻게 시작되었는지를, 그리고 우리에게 생명을 주시는 분이 하나님이라는 것을 잊기 쉽습니다. 그러나 잠시 멈추어 하나님이 우리의 창조주이심을 기억한다면 일상생활에서 감사하는 태도를 키워나갈 수 있습니다. 그에게 도움을 구할 수 있고, 나에게 삶을 선물로 주신 것을 겸손하고 감사한 마음으로 받아들일 수 있습니다. 우리의 감사가 흘러넘쳐서 다른 이들에게 전해지고, 그들 또한 주님의 선하심과 신실하심에 감사를 드릴 수 있게 되기를 바랍니다.

Breath of Life

On a cold and frosty morning, as my daughter and I walked to school, we enjoyed seeing our breath turn to vapor. We giggled at the various steamy clouds we could each produce. I received the moment as a gift, reveling in being with her and being alive.

Our breath, which is usually invisible, was seen in the cold air, and it made me think about the Source of our breath and life—the Lord our Creator. For He who formed Adam out of the dust of the ground, giving him the breath of life, also gives life to us and to every living creature (Gen. 2:7). All things come from Him—even our very breath, which we inhale without even thinking about.

We may be tempted, living with today’s conveniences and technology, to forget our beginnings and that God is the one who gives us life. But when we pause to remember that God is our Creator, we can build an attitude of thankfulness into our daily routines. We can ask Him for help and acknowledge the gift of life with humble, thankful hearts. May our gratitude spill out and touch others, so that they also may give thanks to the Lord for His goodness and faithfulness. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

바울 사도는 그리스도를 따르는 사람들 안에도 세상과 나누어야 할 보물이 있다고 썼습니다. “우리가 이 보배를 질그릇에 가졌으니 이는 심히 큰 능력은 하나님께 있고 우리에게 있지 아니함을 알게 하려 함이라”(고린도후서 4:7). 우리 안에 있는 보물은 바로 그리스도의 말씀과 그분의 사랑입니다.

이 보물이 숨겨지지 않고 나누어져서 하나님의 사랑과 은혜로 말미암아 세상 모든 민족이 하나님의 가족으로 초청될 수 있어야 합니다. 성령님의 사역을 통해 오늘 우리가 그 보물을 누군가와 나눌 수 있게 되기를 바랍니다.

A Treasure to be Shared

In March 1974, Chinese farmers were digging a well when they made a surprising discovery: Buried under the dry ground of central China was the Terracotta Army—life-size terracotta sculptures that dated back to the third century bc. In this extraordinary find were some 8,000 soldiers, 150 cavalry horses, and 130 chariots drawn by 520 horses. The Terracotta Army has become one of the most popular tourist sites in China, attracting over a million visitors annually. This amazing treasure lay hidden for centuries but is now being shared with the world.

The apostle Paul wrote that followers of Christ have a treasure inside them that is to be shared with the world: “We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure" (2 Cor. 4:7 nlt). The treasure inside us is the message of Christ and His love.

This treasure is not to be hidden but is to be shared so that by God’s love and grace people of every nation can be welcomed into His family. May we, through His Spirit’s working, share that treasure with someone today. - BILL CROWDER

긴 그림자

몇 년 전 나는 아내와 함께 영국 요크셔 데일즈 근교의 외딴곳에 있는 아침 식사를 무료로 제공하는 숙소에 머물렀습니다. 그곳에서 우리는 초면인 영국인 부부 네 쌍을 만났습니다. 저녁 후 거실에 앉아 커피를 마시면서 우리의 대화는 “어떤 일을 하세요?”라는 질문과 함께 직업에 관한 것으로 옮겨갔습니다. 그 당시 나는 시카고에 있는 무디성경학교의 학장을 맡고 있었고, 누구도 학교에 대해서나 설립자 디 엘 무디를 알지 못할 거라고 생각했습니다. 하지만 내가 학교 이름을 말하는 순간 그들은 매우 놀랐습니다. “무디와 생키의......그 무디요?” 다른 이는 또 이렇게 덧붙였습니다. “우리 집에 생키의 찬송집이 있어요. 우리 가족은 종종 피아노 주위에 모여서 그 책에 있는 노래들을 부른답니다.” 나는 정말 놀랐습니다! 120여 년 전 복음전도자 드와이트 무디와 그의 음악가 아이라 생키가 영국 제도에서 집회를 열었는데 그 영향력이 지금까지 남아있었던 것입니다.

나는 그날 밤 자녀를 위해 기도하는 어머니의 영향력, 격려하는 동료의 말, 선생님이나 은사의 지원과 도전, 그리고 친구의 사랑이 담긴 충고 등, 하나님을 위해 오랜 영향력을 미칠 삶의 방법들을 생각하면서 그 거실을 떠났습니다. “그의 인자하심이......대대에 이르리로다”(시편 100:5) 라는 놀라운 약속의 역할을 감당한다는 것은 실로 커다란 특권입니다.

Long Shadows

Several years ago, my wife and I stayed in a rustic bed-and-breakfast in the remote Yorkshire Dales of England. We were there with four other couples, all British, whom we had never met before. Sitting in the living room with our after-dinner coffees, the conversation turned to occupations with the question “What do you do?” At the time I was serving as the president of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, and I assumed that no one there knew of MBI or its founder, D. L. Moody. When I mentioned the name of the school, their response was immediate and surprising. “Of Moody and Sankey . . . that Moody?” Another guest added, “We have a Sankey hymnal and our family often gathers around the piano to sing from it.” I was amazed! The evangelist Dwight Moody and his musician Ira Sankey had held meetings in the British Isles more than 120 years ago, and their influence was still being felt.

I left the room that night thinking of the ways our lives can cast long shadows of influence for God—a praying mother’s influence on her children, an encouraging coworker’s words, the support and challenge of a teacher or a mentor, the loving but corrective words of a friend. It’s a high privilege to play a role in the wonderful promise that “His love . . . continues through all generations” (Ps. 100:5). - JOE STOWELL

삶을 찾기

라비 아버지의 말이 라비에게 큰 상처를 남겼습니다. “넌 잘못 태어났어. 우리 가족의 수치야.” 라비는 재능이 많았던 다른 형제들과 비교되어 창피한 존재로 간주되었습니다. 운동을 열심히 했고 또 잘했지만, 라비는 여전히 자신을 실패자로 여겼습니다. ‘난 대체 어떻게 되는 걸까? 난 정말 잘못 태어난 걸까? 고통 없이 이 삶에서 벗어날 수는 없을까?’ 이런 생각이 그를 괴롭혔지만, 그는 아무하고도 이야기하지 않았습니다. 그는 누구와 그런 얘기를 하는 것이 익숙하지가 않았던 것입니다. “고민은 혼자 해결하고, 무너지지 않게 버텨라”고 배웠기 때문입니다.

그래서 라비는 혼자 힘들어했습니다. 그러다 시도한 자살은 실패로 이어졌고, 병원에서 회복하는 중에 어떤 방문자가 성경책을 가져와서 요한복음 14 장을 보여주었습니다. 라비의 어머니는 라비에게 “이는 내가 살아 있고 너희도 살아 있겠음이라”(19절)라는 예수님의 말씀을 읽어주었습니다. 그는 생각했습니다. ‘이것이 내 유일한 희망일지도 몰라. 새로운 방식의 삶, 삶을 만드신 그분께서 말씀하신 대로의 삶.’ 그래서 그는 이렇게 기도했습니다. “예수님, 당신께서 삶의 본래 의미를 찾아주시는 분이라면 제게 그렇게 해주세요.”

살다보면 절망적인 순간도 있습니다. 그러나 라비처럼 우리도 “길이요 진리요 생명”(6절) 되신 예수님 안에서 희망을 찾을 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리에게 풍성하고 만족한 삶을 주기를 간절히 바라십니다.

Finding Life

The words of Ravi’s father cut deep. “You’re a complete failure. You’re an embarrassment to the family.” Compared to his talented siblings, Ravi was viewed as a disgrace. He tried excelling in sports, and he did, but he still felt like a loser. He wondered, What is going to become of me? Am I a complete failure? Can I get out of life some way, painlessly? These thoughts haunted him, but he talked to no one. That simply wasn’t done in his culture. He had been taught to “keep your private heartache private; keep your collapsing world propped up.”

So Ravi struggled alone. Then while he was recovering in the hospital after a failed suicide attempt, a visitor brought him a Bible opened to John 14. His mother read these words of Jesus to Ravi: “Because I live, you also will live” (v. 19). This may be my only hope, he thought. A new way of living. Life as defined by the Author of life. So he prayed, “Jesus, if You are the one who gives life as it is meant to be, I want it.”

Life can present despairing moments. But, like Ravi, we can find hope in Jesus who is “the way and the truth and the life” (v. 6). God longs to give us a rich and satisfying life. - POH FANG CHIA
