좋은 소식!

세계의 뉴스들이 인터넷, 텔레비전, 라디오, 그리고 휴대용 기기들을 통해 우리에게 쏟아집니다. 대부분의 뉴스는 범죄, 테러, 전쟁, 그리고 경제 문제 등과 같은 나쁜 소식들 입니다. 그러나 때로는 슬픔과 절망으로 가득한 어두운 시간을 밀치고 들어오는 좋은 소식들도 있습니다. 자기를 희생하는 사람들의 이야기, 의학기술의 진보, 혹은 전쟁의 상처가 깊은 곳에서 들리는 평화의 소식 같은 것들입니다.

구약성경에는 전쟁에 지친 사람들에게 큰 희망을 주었던 두 사람의 말이 기록되어 있습니다.

나훔은 하나님의 심판이 무자비하고 힘센 나라에 임한다는 것을 말하면서 이렇게 선포했습니다. “볼지어다 아름다운 소식을 알리고 화평을 전하는 자의 발이 산위에 있도다”(나훔 1:15). 그 소식은 핍박 받고 있던 백성들에게 희망을 주었습니다.

비슷한 구절이 이사야서에도 있습니다. “좋은 소식을 전하며 평화를 공포하며 복된 좋은 소식을 가져오며 구원을 공포하며 시온을 향하여 이르기를 네 하나님이 통치하신다 하는 자의 산을 넘는 발이 어찌 그리 아름다운가”(이사야 52:7).

나훔과 이사야의 소망의 예언들은 첫 번째 크리스마스 때 천사가 목동들에게 “무서워 말라 보라 내가 온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식을 너희에게 전하노라 오늘 다윗의 동네에 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨으니 곧 그리스도 주시니라”(누가복음 2:10-11)라고 말했을 때 성취되었습니다.

우리 매일의 삶 가운데 가장 중요한 뉴스는 지금껏 최고의 뉴스였던, 구세주이신 그리스도께서 탄생하셨다는 것입니다.

Good News!

World news bombards us from the Internet, television, radio, and mobile devices. The majority seems to describe what’s wrong—crime, terrorism, war, and economic problems. Yet there are times when good news invades the darkest hours of sadness and despair—stories of unselfish acts, a medical breakthrough, or steps toward peace in war-scarred places.

The words of two men recorded in the Old Testament of the Bible brought great hope to people weary of conflict.

While describing God’s coming judgment on a ruthless and powerful nation, Nahum said, “Look, there on the mountains, the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace!” (Nah. 1:15). That news brought hope to all those oppressed by cruelty.

A similar phrase occurs in the book of Isaiah: “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation” (Isa. 52:7). 

Nahum and Isaiah’s prophetic words of hope found their ultimate fulfillment at the first Christmas when the angel told the shepherds, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (Luke 2:10–11).

돈

나의 사회생활 초기에 직업이라기보다는 사명이라고 생각하고 직장생활을 하던 중에, 다른 회사로부터 월급을 훨씬 더 많이 받을 수 있는 일자리를 제안 받았습니다. 직장을 옮기면 우리 가족은 확실히 경제적인 풍요로움을 더 누릴 수 있었습니다. 그런데 한 가지 문제가 있었습니다. 당시에 하고 있던 일이 소명으로 여겨지면서 그 일에 대한 애착이 있었기에 나는 다른 직장을 알아보지 않던 상황이었던 것입니다.

그러나 그 돈이......

나는 당시 칠십이 넘으신 아버지께 전화를 해서 그 상황을 설명 드렸습니다. 한때는 예리했던 판단력이 중풍과 오랜 시련으로 둔화되기는 했지만 아버지의 대답은 간단명료했습니다. “돈에 대해서는 생각도 하지 마라, 무엇하려고?”

그러자 순간적으로 나의 마음이 정리되었습니다. 돈 하나만 보고 내가 좋아하는 일을 떠날 뻔 했다니! 아버지, 고맙습니다.

예수님은 재물과 그것을 사랑하는 우리의 마음에 대해 산상수훈에서 많이 말씀하셨습니다. 주님은 부를 쌓는 것에 대해 기도하지 말고 “우리의 일용할 양식”(마태복음 6:11)을 위해 기도하라고 가르치셨습니다. 주님은 이 땅에 보물을 쌓는 것에 대해 경고하시며 하나님께서 그분의 피조물들을 철저히 돌보신다는 증거로 새와 꽃들을 예로 드셨습니다(19- 31절). 예수님은 “너희는 먼저 그의 나라와 그의 의를 구하라 그리하면 이 모든 것을 너희에게 더하시리라”(33절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

돈은 중요합니다. 그러나 돈이 우리의 의사결정을 지배해서는 안됩니다. 어려운 시기나 중요한 결정들은 우리의 믿음이 새로운
방식으로 성장할 수 있는 기회입니다. 하늘에 계신 아버지께서 우리를 돌봐주십니다.

The Money

Early in my career while doing work that I saw as more of a mission than a job, another company offered me a position that would give a significant increase in pay. Our family could surely have benefited financially from such a move. There was one problem. I hadn’t been looking for another job because I loved my current role, which was growing into a calling.

But the money . . .

I called my father, then in his seventies, and explained the situation. Though his once-sharp mind had been slowed by strokes and the strain of years, his answer was crisp and clear: “Don’t even think about the money. What would you do?”

In an instant, my mind was made up. The money would have been my only reason for leaving the job I loved! Thanks, Dad.

Jesus devoted a substantial section of His Sermon on the Mount to money and our fondness for it. He taught us to pray not for an accumulation of riches but for “our daily bread” (Matt. 6:11). He warned against storing up treasures on earth and pointed to the birds and flowers as evidence that God cares deeply about His creation (vv. 19–31). “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness,” Jesus said, “and all these things will be given to you as well” (v. 33).

Money matters. But money shouldn’t rule our decision-making process. Tough times and big decisions are opportunities to grow our faith in new ways. Our heavenly Father cares for us. - TIM GUSTAFSON

기도로 하나님 섬기기

하나님은 때때로 그분의 일을 이루시기 위해 우리의 기도를 통해 움직이는 방법을 택하십니다. 그 한 예는 하나님이 엘리야 선지자에게 이스라엘 땅에 삼 년 반 동안 계속되었던 가뭄을 (야고보서 5:17) 끝내겠다고 약속하시면서 “내가 이 땅에 비를 내리게 하겠다.”고 말씀하셨을 때입니다. 하나님이 비를 약속하셨지만, 잠시 후에
“엘리야는 갈멜산 꼭대기로 올라가서 땅에 꿇어 엎드려 그의 얼굴을 무릎 사이에 넣고” 비가 내리기를 전심을 다해 기도했습니다 (열왕기상 18:42). 그리고 엘리야는 계속 기도하면서 사환에게 올라가서 비가 올 조짐이 있는지 바다 쪽을 “일곱 번” 살펴보게 하였습니다(43절).

엘리야는 하나님이 우리로 하여금 겸손하고 끊임없는 기도로 그분의 일에 동참하기를 원하신다는 것을 알았습니다. 우리의 인간적인 한계와 관계없이 하나님은 우리의 기도를 통해 놀라운 방법으로 역사하실 때가 있습니다. 그래서 야고보서에 보면 “엘리야는 우리와 성정이 같은 사람이로되”라고 말하면서도 “의인의 간구는 역사하는 힘이
큼이니라”라고 기록되어 있는 것입니다(야고보서 5:16-17).

우리도 엘리야처럼 신실한 기도로 하나님을 섬기기로 작정하면, 어느 때나 기적을 바로 앞에서 목격할 수 있는 아름다운 특권에 동참하게 됩니다!

Serving God with Our Prayers

God often chooses to move through our prayers to accomplish His work. We see this when God told the prophet Elijah, “I will send rain on the land,” promising to end a drought in Israel that had lasted three and a half years (James 5:17). Even though God had promised rain, a short time later “Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees”—praying intently for the rain to come (1 Kings 18:42). Then, while he continued to pray, Elijah sent his servant to go and look out over the ocean “seven times,” scanning the horizon for any sign of rain (v. 43).

Elijah understood that God wants us to join in His work through humble, persistent prayer. Regardless of our human limitations, God may choose to move through our praying in amazing ways. That’s why the letter of James tells us that “the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results,” all the while reminding us that “Elijah was as human as we are” (James 5:16–17 nlt).

When we make it our aim to serve God through praying faithfully as Elijah did, we’re taking part in a beautiful privilege—where at any moment we may be given a front-row seat to a miracle! - JAMES BANKS

친구로부터 받은 상처

찰스 로우리는 친구에게 자신의 허리통증을 호소하였습니다. 그는 다독여주는 말을 듣고 싶었는데 정작 그가 들은 말은 솔직한 진단의 말이었습니다. 그의 친구는 “내 생각에는 자네 허리가 문제가 아니고 자네의 뱃살 때문인 것 같네. 자네의 배가 너무 나와서 허리를 잡아당기는 것일세.”라고 말했습니다.

찰스는 ‘레브!’라는 잡지에 쓴 칼럼에서 당시에 자칫 마음의 상처를 받을 뻔 했으나 그것을 이겨내고, 체중을 감량하여 그의 허리 통증이 사라졌던 일을 나누었습니다. 찰스는 “드러내놓고 꾸짖는 것이 숨은 사랑보다 낫다. 친구의 책망은 아파도 진심에서 나온다”(잠언 27:5-6, 새번역)는 것을 인정하게 되었습니다.

그러나 진실이 주는 상처 때문에, 문제는 우리가 너무나 자주 비판을 통해 구제를 받기보다는 차라리 잘못되더라도 칭찬을 듣고 싶어 한다는 것입니다. 진실은 사람의 자존심을 상하게 하고, 불편하게 만들며, 우리자신의 변화를 요구합니다.

진실한 친구들은 우리에게 상처를 주는 것을 좋아 해서 그러는 것이 아니라, 오히려 우리를 너무 사랑하기 때문에 거짓을 말할 수가 없는 것입니다. 진실한 친구는 우리가 이미 알고는 있으면서도 진심으로 받아들여 그대로 살지 못하는 것들에 대해 사랑의 용기를 가지고 지적해줍니다. 그들은 우리 귀에 듣기 좋은 것 뿐만 아니라 우리가 들어야만 하는 것도 말해줍니다.

솔로몬은 그의 잠언에서 그와 같은 우정을 귀하게 여겼습니다. 예수님은 거기서 더 나아가, 우리에게 거부당하는 아픔을 참으시면서까지 우리의 현재 모습에 대한 진실을 말해주셨을 뿐만 아니라, 우리가 얼마나 큰 사랑을 받고 있는지를 보여주셨습니다.

Wounds from a Friend

Charles Lowery complained to his friend about lower back pain. He was seeking a sympathetic ear, but what he got was an honest assessment. His friend told him, “I don’t think your back pain is your problem; it’s your stomach. Your stomach is so big it’s pulling on your back.”

In his column for REV! Magazine, Charles shared that he resisted the temptation to be offended. He lost the weight and his back problem went away. Charles recognized that “Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted” (Prov. 27:5–6).

The trouble is that so often we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism, for truth hurts. It bruises our ego, makes us uncomfortable, and calls for change.

True friends don’t find pleasure in hurting us. Rather, they love us too much to deceive us. They are people who, with loving courage, point out what we may already know but find hard to truly accept and live by. They tell us not only what we like to hear but also what we need to hear.

Solomon honored such friendship in his proverbs. Jesus went further—He endured the wounds of our rejection not only to tell us the truth about ourselves but to show us how much we are loved. - POH FANG CHIA

위로의 선물

멀 해가드의 오래된 노래 “12월을 무난히 넘길 수만 있다면”은 공장에서 해고당해 어린 딸에게 크리스마스 선물을 사줄 돈이 없는 한 남자의 이야기를 노래합니다. 일 년 중 행복해야 할 12월이건만 그의 삶은 어둡고 춥게 여겨집니다.

낙담은 늘 있게 마련이지만 12월에는 더 심하게 느껴질 수 있습니다. 우리의 기대가 더 크기 때문에 슬픔이 더 깊은 것입니다. 그럴 때 자그마한 위로가 큰 도움이 될 수 있습니다.

구브로 출신의 요셉은 초기에 예수님을 따르던 사람 중의 하나였습니다. 사도들은 그를 “위로의 아들”을 뜻하는 바나바라고 불렀습니다. 사도행전 4:36-37은 그가 자신의 밭을 팔아 그 돈을 어려운 다른 신자들을 돕기 위해 내놓았다고 말하고 있습니다.

나중에 제자들은 사울을 두려워했지만 (사도행전 9:26), “바나바는 사울을 맞아들여 사도들에게로 데려갔습니다”(27절, 새번역). 나중에 바울이라고 불리게 된 사울은 이전에 믿는 사람들을 죽이려 했던 자였지만, 바나바는 그가 그리스도로 말미암아 변화된 사람이라고 변호해주었습니다.

우리 주변 어디에나 위로 받기를 원하는 사람들이 있습니다, 때에 알맞은 말이나 전화, 혹은 기도가 예수님을 믿는 그들의 믿음을 북돋워줄 수 있습니다.

바나바의 관용과 도움의 모습은 위로의 아들과 딸이 된다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지를 보여줍니다. 그것은 아마도 우리가 이번 성탄절에 다른 사람들에게 베풀어줄 수 있는 가장 큰 선물일지도 모르겠습니다.

The Gift of Encouragement

An old Merle Haggard song, “If We Make It Through December,” tells the story of a man laid off from his factory job with no money to buy Christmas gifts for his little girl. Although December is supposed to be a happy time of year, his life seems dark and cold.

Discouragement is not unique to December, but it can be amplified then. Our expectations may be higher, our sadness deeper. A little encouragement can go a long way.

Joseph, a man from Cyprus, was among the early followers of Jesus. The apostles called him Barnabas, which means “son of encouragement.” We meet him in Acts 4:36–37 when he sold a piece of property and donated the money to help other believers in need. 

Later, we read that the disciples were afraid of Saul (Acts 9:26). “But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles” (v. 27). Saul, later called Paul, had formerly been trying to kill the believers, but Barnabas defended him as a man transformed by Christ.

All around us are people longing to be encouraged. A timely word, a phone call, or a prayer can bolster their faith in Jesus.

The generosity and support of Barnabas demonstrate what it means to be a son or daughter of encouragement. That may be the greatest gift we can give to others this Christmas.  - DAVID MCCASLAND

영화에 새로운 개념의 음향을 처음 도입한 곳은 월트 디즈니 스튜디오였습니다. “스테레오사운드” 또는 입체음향이라 불리는 이것을 개발하게 된 이유는 제작자들이 영화를 보러오는 관객들에게 새로운 방식으로 음악을 들려주기를 원했기 때문이었습니다.

그러나 “입체음향”을 사용한 것은 그것이 처음이 아니었습니다. 수천 년 전, 느헤미야는 예루살렘 성벽을 재건하고 봉헌할 때 한 아이디어를 내놓았습니다. “나는 유다 지도자들을 성벽 위로 올라오게 하고, 감사의 찬송을 부를 큰 찬양대를 두 편으로 나누어 서게 하였다”(느헤미야 12:31, 새번역)고 그는 설명했습니다. 두 무리가 남쪽 성곽 거름 문에서 시작하여 한 무리는 왼쪽으로, 또 한 무리는 오른쪽으로 행진하면서 예루살렘을 찬양으로 에워싸며 성전으로 행진하였습니다(31,37-40절).

“ 하 나 님 이 크 게 즐 거 워 하 게 하셨으므로”(43절), 백성들은 찬양대에 맞추어 크게 즐거워하였습니다. 실제로 그들의 즐거워하는 소리가 “멀리까지 울려 퍼졌습니다”(43절, 새번역).

그들의 감사 찬송은 산발랏과 같은 적의 반대를 이겨내고 성벽을 새로 재건하도록 하나님이 도와주신 결과였습니다. 우리의 기쁨이 넘쳐 찬양이 되도록 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 것들은 무엇입니까? 하나님이 분명하게 보여주신 우리의 삶의 방향입니까? 우리가 시련 당할 때 하나님만이 주실 수 있는 위로입니까? 아니면 우리의 최고의
선물인 구원입니까?

우리는 우리의 찬양으로 “입체음향”을 만들지는 못하더라도, 하나님이 우리에게 주신 큰 기쁨으로 즐거워할 수는 있습니다. 그러면 사람들이 우리가 하나님을 찬양하는 것을 듣고 하나님이 어떻게 역사하시는가를 보게 될 것입니다.

Surround Sound

Walt Disney Studios was the first to introduce a new concept in listening to movies. It was called “stereophonic sound” or surround sound, and it was developed because producers wanted the movie-going audience to hear the music in a new way.

But this wasn’t the first use of “surround sound.” Thousands of years earlier, Nehemiah introduced the idea at the dedication of the rebuilt wall of Jerusalem. “I had the leaders of Judah go up on top of the wall,” he explained. “I also assigned two large choirs to give thanks” (Neh. 12:31). The two choirs began at the southern part of the wall, at the Dung Gate. One went to the left, one went to the right, and they surrounded the city of Jerusalem in praise as they marched toward the temple (vv. 31, 37–40).

The choirs led the people in rejoicing because “God had given them great joy” (v. 43). In fact, their rejoicing “could be heard far away” (v. 43).

Their praise resulted from God’s help as the people overcame the opposition of enemies like Sanballat and rebuilt the wall. What has God given us that causes our joy to overflow into praise? God’s clear direction in our lives? The comfort He alone can provide in times of trouble? Or our ultimate gift: salvation?

Perhaps we can’t create “surround sound” with our praise, but we can rejoice in the joy God has given us. Then others can hear us praise God and see how He works. - DAVE BRANON

아름다운 연합

세 마리의 커다란 맹수가 서로 끌어안고 장난치는 모습은 지극히 보기 드문 장면입니다. 그러나 조지아 주에 있는 한 동물보호소에서 이 일이 매일 실제로 일어나고 있습니다. 2001년 노아방주 동물보호소는 여러 달 동안 학대와 방치 상태로 있던 사자와 벵갈 호랑이, 흑곰을 구출했습니다. 그곳의 부소장은 말합니다. “우리는 그들을 따로 떼어놓을 수도 있었습니다. 하지만 그들이 한 가족으로 왔기 때문에 한 우리에 같이 두기로 했습니다.” 이 세 마리는 전에 함께 학대를 받으면서 서로에게서 위안을 얻었던 터라, 서로의 차이점에도 불구하고 지금 평화롭게 같이 잘 지내고 있습니다.

하나가 된다는 것은 아름다운 것입니다. 그러나 바울이 에베소교인들에게 보낸 편지에서 언급한 연합은 좀 특이합니다. 바울은 에베소교인들에게 그리스도 안에서 한 몸으로 부르심을 받은 사람답게 살라고 격려하였습니다(에베소서 4:4-5). 그들은 성령의 능력으로 겸손함과 친절함과 오래 참음을 키워나가며 함께 연합하며 살 수 있었을 것입니다. 우리도 이런 태도를 가질 때 예수 그리스도 안에서 같은 믿음으로 “사랑 가운데 서로” 용납할 수 있게 됩니다(4:2).

우리도 서로 다름에도 불구하고, 하나님 가족의 일원으로서 우리 구주의 죽음을 통해 하나님과 화목하게 되었고, 또 우리 삶에 매일 역사하시는 성령님을 통해 서로 화목하게 되었습니다.

Seeing three large predatory animals cuddle and play together is extremely unusual. Yet this is precisely what happens daily in an animal sanctuary in Georgia. In 2001, after months of neglect and abuse, a lion, a Bengal tiger, and a black bear were rescued by Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary. “We could have separated them,” said the assistant director. “But since they came as a kind of family, we decided to keep them together.” The trio had found comfort in each other during their time of mistreatment, and, despite their differences, they live peacefully together.

Unity is a beautiful thing. But the unity Paul wrote about in his letter to the believers in Ephesus is unique. Paul encouraged the Ephesians to live up to their calling as members of one body in Christ (Eph. 4:4–5). By the power of the Holy Spirit they would be able to live in unity as they developed humility, gentleness, and patience. These attitudes also allow us to lovingly bear “with one another in love” through the common ground we have in Christ Jesus (4:2).

Despite our differences, as members of the family of God we have been reconciled to Him through the death of our Savior and reconciled to each other through the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. - MARVIN WILLIAMS

한결같은 친절

어릴 적에 나는 프랭크 바움의 소설 “오즈의 나라” 시리즈의 열렬한 독자였는데, 최근에 원작의 삽화가 모두 실려 있는 ‘오즈의 린키팅크’라는 책을 우연히 접하게 되었습니다. 나는 바움의 작품 속에 나타난 정말 좋은 성품의 어쩔 수 없는 매력을 지닌 린키팅크 왕의 익살에 다시 한 번 웃었습니다. 어린 왕자 잉가는 그에 대해 이렇게 훌륭히 묘사했습니다. “아버지의 친절하고 부드러운 마음씨는 아버지의 지혜보다 훨씬 더 뛰어납니다.”

얼마나 단순하고도 현명한 말인지요! 그런데 우리 중 거친 말로 우리에게 소중한 사람들의 마음에 상처를 주지 않은 사람이 있을까요? 그렇게 상처를 줌으로써 평온하고
고요했던 시간들은 깨지고, 그동안 우리가 사랑하는 사람들에게 했던 많은 좋은 일들을 다 망쳐버리기도 합니다. 18세기의 영국 작가 해나 모어는 “작은 무례함이 커다란 모욕을 준다.”라고 말했습니다.

그런데 여기 좋은 소식이 있습니다. 우리는 누구나 친절한 사람이 될 수 있습니다. 감동적인 설교도 못하고, 어려운 질문에 적절히 대응하지 못하며, 많은 사람들에게 전도하지 못할지 모르지만, 우리 모두는 친절한 사람이 될 수 있습니다.

어떻게 그럴 수 있을까요? 기도를 통해 그렇게 될 수 있습니다. 기도는 우리의 마음을 부드럽게 해주는 유일한 방법입니다. “여호와여 내 입에 파수꾼을 세우시고 내 입술의 문을 지키소서 내 마음이 악한 일에 기울지 말게 하소서”(시편 141:3-4).

사랑이 차갑게 식어버린 이 세상에서, 하나님의 마음에서 우러나오는 친절은 다른 사람들을 돕고 치유할 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법 중의 하나입니다.

Constant Kindness

When I was a child I was an ardent reader of L. Frank Baum's Land of Oz books. I recently came across Rinkitink in Oz with all the original artwork. I laughed again at the antics of Baum's irrepressible, good-hearted King Rinkitink with his down-to-earth goodness. Young Prince Inga described him best: “His heart is kind and gentle and that is far better than being wise."

How simple and how sensible! Yet who has not wounded the heart of someone dear to us by a harsh word? By doing so, we disturb the peace and quiet of the hour and we can undo much of the good we have done toward those we love. "A small unkindness is a great offense,” said Hannah More, an 18th-century English writer.

Here’s the good news: Anyone can become kind. We may be incapable of preaching an inspiring sermon, fielding hard questions, or evangelizing vast numbers, but we can all be kind.

How? Through prayer. It is the only way to soften our hearts. “Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil [or harsh]” (Ps. 141:3–4).

In a world in which love has grown cold, a kindness that comes from the heart of God is one of the most helpful and healing things we can offer to others. - DAVID ROPER

성탄절 불빛

매년 크리스마스 계절이 되면 싱가포르의 관광명소인 ‘오차드 거리’는 몇 주 동안 많은 불빛과 색깔들로 가득한 동화의 나라로 변합니다. 이 불빛들은 연말 대목 기간인 12월 한 달 동안 거리에 있는 많은 상점에서 관광객들이 더 많은 돈을 쓰게 하기 위해 마련한 것입니다. 쇼핑객들은 축제분위기를 즐기고, 합창단이 부르는 귀에 익은 성탄 캐럴을 들으며, 흥겨운 공연들을 보기 위해 이곳으로 옵니다.

첫 크리스마스의 ‘점등 장식’은 요즘처럼 전선과 반짝이와 네온 빛으로 된 것이 아니라, “그들을 두루 비춘 주의 영광”(누가복음 2:9)으로 된 것이었습니다. 관광객들이 본 것도 아니고, 단지 들판에서 양을 치던 몇몇 평범한 목자들만 그것을 보았습니다. 그리고 이어서 “지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광”(14절)이라는, 기대하지 않았던 천사들의 합창이 울려 퍼졌습니다.

목자들은 천사들이 말한 것이 사실인지 알아보기 위해 베들레헴으로 갔습니다(15절). 그들은 사실을 확인한 후, 그들이 보고 들은 것을 말하지 않을 수 없었습니다. “(그들이) 보고 천사가 자기들에게 이 아기에 대하여 말한 것을 전하니”(17절).

우리 중 많은 사람들은 지금껏 크리스마스 이야기를 자주 들어보았을 것입니다. 이번 크리스마스에는 “세상의 빛”으로 오신 그리스도를(요한복음 8:12) 다른 사람들과 나누어보지 않겠습니까?

Christmas Lights

Each year for several weeks around Christmas, Singapore’s tourist belt, Orchard Road, is transformed into a wonderland of lights and colors. This light-up is designed to attract tourists to spend their money at the many stores along the street during this “golden month of business.” Shoppers come to enjoy the festivities, listen to choirs sing familiar Christmas carols, and watch performers entertain.

The first Christmas “light-up” ever was not created by electrical cables, glitter, and neon lights but by “the glory of the Lord [that] shone around” (Luke 2:9). No tourists saw it, just a few simple shepherds out in their field. And it was followed by an unexpected rendition of “Glory to God in the Highest” by an angelic choir (v. 14).

The shepherds went to Bethlehem to see if what the angels said was true (v. 15). After they had confirmed it, they could not keep to themselves what they had heard and seen. “When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child” (v. 17).

Many of us have heard the Christmas story often. This Christmas, why not share the good news with others that Christ—“the light of the world”—has come (John 8:12).

“무덤 7”의 보물

1932년 멕시코의 고고학자 알폰소 카소가 멕시코 남부 와하까 주의 몬떼 알반에서 ‘무덤 7’을 발견했습니다. 4백여 점이 넘는 유물이 그곳에서 발견되었는데, 그중에는 “몬떼 알반의 보물”이라 불리는 스페인정복 이전의 보석 수백 가지도 있었습니다. 그것은 멕시코 고고학에 있어 주요 발견 중의 하나였는데, 원형 그대로 보존된 비취로 된 잔을 손에 쥔 카소가 얼마나 흥분했었는지는 상상에 맡길 수밖에 없습니다.

오래 전 시편기자는 금이나 보석보다 더 값진 보물에 관해 썼습니다. “사람이 많은 탈취물을 얻은 것처럼 나는 주의 말씀을 즐거워하나이다”(시편 119:162). 시편 119

The Treasure in Tomb 7

In 1932, Mexican archaeologist Alfonso Caso discovered Tomb 7 at Monte Alban, Oaxaca. He found more than four hundred artifacts, including hundreds of pieces of pre-Hispanic jewelry he called “The Treasure of Monte Alban.” It is one of the major finds of Mexican archaeology. One can only imagine Caso’s excitement as he held a jade cup in its purest form.

Centuries earlier, the psalmist wrote of a treasure more valuable than gold or rock crystal. He said, “I rejoice in your promise like one who finds great spoil” (Ps. 119:162). In Psalm 119, the writer knew how valuable God’s instructions and promises are to our lives, so he compared them to the great treasure that comes in hand with the victory of a conqueror.

Caso’s name is remembered today because of his discovery in Tomb 7. We can enjoy it if we visit a museum in Oaxaca. However, the psalmist’s treasure is at our fingertips. Day by day we can dig into the Scriptures and find diamonds of promises, rubies of hope, and emeralds of wisdom. But by far the greatest thing we find is the person whom the book points to: Jesus Himself. After all, He is the Author of the book.

Let us seek diligently with the confidence that this is the treasure that will enrich us. As the psalmist said, “Your laws are my treasure; they are my heart’s delight” (v. 111 nlt).
