기쁨을 주는 향기

뉴욕의 한 향수 제조자는 냄새로 향수에 어떤 향기가 섞여 있는지 알 수 있으며, 그 향수를 누가 만들었는지 짐작할 수 있다고 공언합니다. 한 번 냄새를 맡으면 “이것은 제니가 만든 것이야.” 라고 말할 수 있다는 것입니다. 바울은 고린도에 사는 그리스도인들에게 쓴 서신 중에서, 승리한 로마군대가 정복한 도시에서 향을 피우며 행진하는 것을 연상시키는 예를 들었습니다 (고린도후서 2:14). 대장이 먼저 지나가면 그의 군대가 그 뒤를 뒤따랐으며, 그 뒤로 패배한 포로들이 따라갔습니다. 그 향이 뿜어내는 향기는 로마인들에게는 승리를 의미했지만, 포로들에게는 죽음을 의미했습니다.

바울은 우리가 하나님께는 죄를 이긴 그리스도의 승리를 의미하는 기분 좋은 향기라고 했습니다. 하나님이 그리스도 자신의 향기를 우리에게 주셨기 때문에 우리는 감미로운 냄새를 전하는 찬미의 희생제물이 될 수 있습니다. 하지만 우리가 어떻게 살아야 이 기쁨의 향기를 다른 이들에게 퍼뜨릴 수 있을까요? 우리는 자비와 사랑을 나누고 복음을 전함으로써 다른 사람들이 구원의 길을 찾을 수 있게 할 수 있습니다. 우리는 우리를 통하여 성령님이 주님의 사랑과 희락, 자비의 은사를 드러내실 수 있도록 할 수 있습니다(갈라디아서 5:22-23).

다른 사람들이 우리의 모습을 보고 “이것이 예수님의 모습인가” 라고 말하고 있습니까? 우리는 주님이 우리를 통해 그분의 향기를 퍼뜨리도록 하고 있으며, 그럼으로써 주님을 다른 사람들에게 증거하고 있습니까? 주님은 가장 절묘한 향기를 만드시는 전무후무한 최고의 향수제조자이십니다.

A Pleasing Aroma

A perfumer who works in New York declares that she can recognize certain combinations of scents and guess the perfumer behind a fragrance. With just a sniff she can say, “This is Jenny’s work.”

When writing to the followers of Christ in the city of Corinth, Paul at one point used an example that would have reminded them of a victorious Roman army in a conquered city burning incense (2 COR. 2:14). The general would come through first, followed by his troops and then the defeated army. For the Romans, the aroma of the incense meant victory; for the prisoners, it meant death.

Paul said we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ’s victory over sin. God has given us the fragrance of Christ Himself so we can become a sweet-smelling sacrifice of praise. But how can we live so we spread this pleasing fragrance to others? We can show generosity and love, and we can share the gospel with others so they can find the way to salvation. We can allow the Spirit to display through us His gifts of love, joy, and kindness (GAL. 5:22–23).

Do others observe us and say, “This is Jesus’s work”? Are we allowing Him to spread His fragrance through us and then telling others about Him? He is the Ultimate Perfumer—the most exquisite fragrance there will ever be. - KEILA OCHOA

서로 돕기

그리스도의 몸”은 신약성경에 서른 번 이상 나오는 신비로운 표현입니다. 바울 사도는 특히 교회의 모습을 나타내는데 이 표현을 사용하였습니다. 예수님은 승천하신 후, 결점과 실수투성이인 사람들에게 주님의 사역을 맡기셨습니다. 주님은 교회의 머리의 역할을 담당하시고, 나머지 팔이나 다리, 귀, 눈, 그리고 목소리 역할은 변덕스러운 제자들에게, 그리고 당신과 나에게 맡기셨습니다.

예수님이 다양한 부분들로 구성된 큰 몸에서 보이지 않는 머리의 역할을 하고자 하신 것은, 몸의 지체들이 고난에 처할 때 이겨내도록 서로 돕는 일을 주로 우리에게 맡기신다는 것을 의미합니다. 바울 사도가 다음과 같이 썼을 때 그것을 염두에 두고 있었음이 분명합니다. “우리의 모든 환난 중에서 우리를 위로하사 우리로 하여금 하나님께 받는 위로로써 모든 환난 중에 있는 자들을 능히 위로하게 하시는 이시로다 그리스도의 고난이 우리에게 넘친 것 같이 우리가 받는 위로도 그리스도로 말미암아 넘치는도다”(고린도후서 1:4-5). 바울은 자신이 사역하는 동안 언제나 그 원칙을 실천에 옮기며 살면서, 기아에 허덕이는 자들을 위해 구호품을 수집하고, 어려운 지역에 돕는 사람들을 보내며, 신자들이 보내준 것을 하나님의 선물로 알고 감사했습니다.

Helping Each Other

“The body of Christ” is a mysterious phrase used more than 30 times in the New Testament. The apostle Paul especially settled on that phrase as an image of the church. After Jesus ascended to heaven, He turned over His mission to flawed and bumbling men and women. He assumed the role of head of the church, leaving the tasks of arms, legs, ears, eyes, and voice to the erratic disciples— and to you and me.

Jesus’s decision to operate as the invisible head of a large body with many parts means that He often relies on us to help one another cope during times of suffering. The apostle Paul must have had something like that in mind when he wrote these words: “[God] comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ” (2 COR. 1:4–5). And all through his ministry Paul put that principle into practice, taking up collections for famine victims, dispatching assistants to go to troubled areas, acknowledging believers’ gifts as gifts from God Himself.

The phrase “the body of Christ” expresses well what we are called to do: to represent in flesh what Christ is like, especially to those in need. - PHILIP YANCEY

시간을 초월하여

2016년에 영국 및 전 세계의 극단에서는 윌리엄 셰익스피어의 서거 4백주년을 기념하여 특별히 제작된 작품들을 무대에 올렸습니다. 영어권의 가장 위대한 극작가로 널리 인정받는 이 사람의 불멸의 작품을 기념하기 위해 수많은 사람들이 음악회나 강연회, 그리고 축제 마당에 모여들었습니다. 셰익스피어와 동시대의 사람이었던 벤 존슨은 그에 대해 “그는 어느 한 시대의 사람이 아니라 모든 시대의 사람이다.”라고 기록했습니다.

어떤 예술가나 작가, 사상가의 영향력이 여러 세기에 걸쳐 지속될 수 있겠지만, 그 삶이나 업적이 시간을 초월하여 영원히 지속될 사람은 예수 그리스도 단 한분입니다. 예수님은 자신을 “하늘에서 내려온 떡이니......이 떡을 먹는 자는 영원히 살리라”(요한복음 6:58)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

예수님의 가르침을 들은 많은 사람들이 예수님의 말씀을 불쾌히 여기며 그를 떠났을 때(요한복음 6:61-66), 주님은 제자들에게 그들도 떠나겠는가고 물으셨습니다(67절). 그때 베드로는 “주여 영생의 말씀이 주께 있사오니 우리가 누구에게로 가오리이까 우리가 주는 하나님의 거룩하신 자이신 줄 믿고 알았사옵나이다”(68-69 절)라고 대답했습니다.

예수님을 주님과 구주로 우리 삶에 모셔드릴 때, 우리는 예수님의 첫 제자들과 동참하게 되며, 시간을 초월하여 영원히 지속될 새 생명을 가지고 주님을 따랐던 모든 사람들과 동참하게 됩니다.

Beyond Time

During 2016, theater companies in Britain and around the world have staged special productions to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. Concerts, lectures, and festivals have drawn crowds who celebrate the enduring work of the man widely considered to be the greatest playwright in the English language. Ben Jonson, one of Shakespeare’s contemporaries, wrote of him, “He was not of an age, but for all time.”

While the influence of some artists, writers, and thinkers may last for centuries, Jesus Christ is the only person whose life and work will endure beyond time. He claimed to be “the bread that came down from heaven . . . whoever feeds on this bread will live forever” (V. 58).

When many people who heard Jesus’s teaching were offended by His words and stopped following Him (JOHN 6:61–66), the Lord asked His disciples if they also wanted to leave (V. 67). Peter replied, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God” (VV. 68–69).

When we invite Jesus to come into our lives as our Lord and Savior, we join His first disciples and all those who have followed Him in a new life that will last forever—beyond time. - DAVID MCCASLAND

바뀔 준비가 되셨나요?

절제는 아마도 몸에 완전히 배기가 가장 힘든 것 중의 하나일 것입니다. 나쁜 습관이나 좋지 않은 태도, 그릇된 사고방식으로 우리는 얼마나 많이 좌절해 왔습니까? 우리는 더 나아지겠다고 약속하고, 사람들에게도 지켜봐달라고 부탁하기도 합니다. 하지만 우리는 내면 깊숙한 곳에서는 변하려는 의지나 능력이 없다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 우리는 말을 하고 계획을 세우고 자기계발 서적들을 읽을 수도 있지만, 우리 내면에 있는 많은 것들을 극복하고 억제하기란 여전히 힘들다는 것을 알게 됩니다.

그러나 감사하게도 하나님은 우리의 연약함을 아시고 또 그 치유방법도 알고 계십니다! 성경은 “성령의 열매는 사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과 온유와 절제” (갈라디아서 5:22-23)라고 말합니다. 절제를 얻는 유일한 길은 성령께서 우리를 주장하시게 하는 것입니다.

다시 말해 우리의 주된 초점은 ‘노력’이 아니라 ‘순종’입니다. 매 순간마다 우리 자신보다는 주님을 신뢰하며 순종하며 사는 것입니다. 바울은 그것이 “성령을 따라 행하는”(16절) 것이라고 말합니다.

바뀔 준비가 되셨습니까? 하나님이 당신 안에 계시기 때문에 당신은 바뀔 수 있습니다. 주님이 당신을 주장하시도록 내어드리면, 주님은 당신이 그분을 닮아가는 열매를 맺도록 도와주실 것입니다.

Ready for a Change?

Self-control is probably one of the hardest things to master. How often have we been defeated by a bad habit, a lousy attitude, or a wrong mindset? We make promises to improve. We ask someone to hold us accountable. But deep inside, we know that we don’t have the will or the ability to change. We can talk, we can plan, we can read self-help books, but we still find it difficult to overcome and control many of the things that are inside us!

Thankfully, God knows our weakness, and He also knows the remedy! The Bible says, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (GAL. 5:22–23). The only way to gain self-control is by allowing the Holy Spirit to control us.

In other words, our key focus is not effort but surrender— to live moment by moment submissively trusting in the Lord rather than in self. Paul says this is what it means to “walk by the Spirit” (V. 16).

결혼식 준비

8살짜리 내 딸이 “배고파”라고 말했습니다. 나는 “미안해. 네게 줄게 없네. 우리 같이 게임할까?”라고 말했습니다. 결혼식이 정오에 시작될 예정이었지만, 우리는 한 시간이 넘도록 신부가 교회에 도착하기를 기다리고 있었습니다. 얼마나 더 오래 기다려야 할까 생각하면서 나는 결혼식이 시작될 때까지 딸을 달랠 수 있기를 바랐습니다.

기다리는 동안, 나는 마치 우리가 성경의 한 비유 말씀을 실제로 행하고 있는 것처럼 느꼈습니다. 비록 우리가 사는 목사관이 교회 바로 앞에 있었지만, 그래도 내가 크래커를 가지러 간 사이 신부가 어느 순간엔가 도착할 수 있고 그러면 신부입장을 놓칠지도 모른다고 생각했습니다. 배고파하는 딸의 관심을 계속 딴 곳으로 돌리면서, 나는 열 처녀에 관한 예수님의 비유를 생각해보았습니다 (마태복음 25:1-13). 다섯 처녀는 신랑을 기다리는 동안 등불을 밝히기에 충분한 기름을 준비해 가지고 왔지만, 다른 다섯 처녀는 그렇게 하지 못했습니다. 내가 목사관에 뛰어갔다 오기에는 너무 늦었던 것처럼, 젊은 처녀들이 등불을 밝힐 기름을 더 사오기에는 너무 늦었던 것입니다.

Ready for the Wedding

I’m hungry,” said my eight-year-old daughter. “I’m sorry,” I said, “I don’t have anything for you. Let’s play tic-tactoe.” We had been waiting over an hour for the bride to arrive at the church for what was supposed to be a noon wedding. As I wondered how much longer it would be, I hoped I could occupy my daughter until the wedding started.

As we waited, I felt like we were enacting a parable. Although the vicarage where we live is a stone’s throw from the church, I knew if I went to fetch some crackers, the bride could come at any moment and I would miss her entrance. As I employed many distraction techniques with my hungry daughter, I also thought about Jesus’s parable about the ten virgins (MATT. 25:1–13). Five came prepared with enough oil for their lamps to stay lit as they waited for the bridegroom, but five did not. Just as it was too late for me to dash back to the vicarage, so it was too late for the young women to go and buy more oil for their lamps.

Jesus told this parable to emphasize that we need to be prepared, for when He comes again we will give an account over the state of our hearts. Are we waiting and ready? - AMY BOUCHER PYE

긴급 기도

2001년 9월 11일 스탠리 프레임너스는 세계무역센터 남쪽 타워 81층에서 일을 하던 중 비행기가 그를 향해 똑바로 날아오는 것을 보았습니다. 스탠리는 몸을 보호하려고 책상 밑에 숨으면서 “주님, 저는 못합니다! 주님이 알아서 해 주세요!”라고 급히 기도했습니다.

스탠리는 비행기 충돌로 생긴 엄청난 충격으로 부서진 잔해 속에 갇혔습니다. 그러나 그가 기도하며 도와달라고 외치는 소리를 다른 사무실에서 일하던 브라운 클라크가 듣고 달려왔습니다. 그 두 사람은 어둠 속에서 잔해를 헤쳐 가며 맨 아래층까지 80층 계단을 걸어 내려와 밖으로 나왔습니다.

극심한 위협에 처했던 다윗도 하나님께 도움을 구했습니다. 그는 전쟁 중에 적들과 대치했을 때 하나님께서 가까이 계심을 확인하고 싶었습니다. 다윗은 절박한 마음으로 “주는 내가 항상 피하여 숨을 바위가 되소서...... 하나님이여 나를 멀리 하지 마소서 나의 하나님이여 속히 나를 도우소서”(시편 71:3,12)라고 기도했습니다.

우리는 우리가 처한 모든 어려운 상황에서 다 구제 받는다고는 약속 받지 않았습니다. 그러나 하나님이 우리 기도를 들으시고 모든 일에 우리와 동행하신다는 사실은 확신할 수 있습니다.

Emergency Prayer

On September 11, 2001, Stanley Praimnath was working on the 81st floor of the World Trade Center South Tower when he saw an airplane flying directly toward him. Stanley prayed a quick prayer as he dove under a desk for protection: “Lord, I can’t do this! You take over!”

The terrible impact of the plane crash trapped Stanley behind a wall of debris. But as he prayed and cried for help, Brian Clark, a worker from another office, heard and responded. Making their way through rubble and darkness, the two found their way down 80 flights of stairs to the ground floor and out.

When encountering terrible threats, David asked God for help. He wanted to be assured of God’s nearness as he faced enemies in battle. In a heartfelt petition David said, “Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go . . . . Do not be far from me, my God; come quickly, God, to help me” (PS. 71:3, 12).

We aren’t promised deliverance from every difficult situation we face. But we can be confident that God hears our prayers and will walk alongside us through everything. - DENNIS FISHER

에비의 결단

에비는 다른 문화, 다른 세대의 사람들에게 찬양하고 간증하며 하나님의 사랑을 전하기 위해 25명의 미국 고등학교 합창단의 일원으로 자메이카를 방문했습니다. 그 여행 중에 에비는 기쁨으로 가득 찬, 특별히 기억에 남는 하루를 보내게 되었습니다.

그날 합창단이 한 요양원을 방문하여 그곳에 사는 사람들을 만나 노래했습니다. 노래를 부른 후 에비는 그곳에 사는 30대 초반의 한 젊은 여자 옆에 앉았습니다. 대화가 시작되었을 때 에비는 그 여자에게 예수님이 누구시고 우리를 위해 무엇을 하셨는지를 꼭 전해야겠다고 느꼈습니다. 에비는 구원을 설명하는 성경구절들을 그 여자에게 보여주었습니다. 잠시 후 그 여자는 예수님을 자신의 구주로 영접하고 싶다고 말하고, 실제로 그렇게 했습니다.

에비가 예수님에 대해 대화를 시작해야겠다고 결심했기 때문에, 우리 그룹은 그날 한 생명이 하나님의 가족으로 새로 탄생하는 기쁨을 누릴 수 있었습니다.

마가복음 16장 15절은 에비가 한 일이 모든 믿는 사람들이 해야 할 일이라고 말합니다. ‘메시지’ 성경번역본은 이 구절을 이렇게 표현합니다. “어디든 가서 하나님의 복음의 메시지를 모든 사람들에게 알려라.”

어느 곳에 있는 어떤 사람이 복음을 듣고 우리 구주를 받아들이는 이 일이 갖는 놀라운 경이로움을 우리가 절대 과소평가하지 말게 하소서.

Evie’s Decision

Evie was one of 25 American teenagers in a high school choir who traveled to Jamaica to sing, witness, and show God’s love to people of a different culture and generation. And for Evie, one day of that trip was particularly memorable and joy-filled.

That day, the choir went to a nursing home to sing and visit with the residents. After they sang, Evie sat down with a young woman who lived at the home, a woman in her early 30s. As they began to chat, Evie felt that she should talk about Jesus—who He was and what He did for us. She showed her verses in the Bible that explained salvation. Soon the woman said she wanted to trust Jesus as her Savior. And that’s just what she did.

Because of Evie’s decision to start a conversation about Jesus, our group celebrated a new birth into God’s family that day.

Mark 16:15 tells us that what Evie did is what is expected of all believers. Here’s how The Message paraphrases that verse: “Go everywhere and announce the Message of God’s good news to one and all.”

May we never underestimate the wonder of what it means for anyone, anywhere to hear the good news and to say yes to our Savior. - DAVE BRANON

가장 중요한 것

예수님께서 사랑하신 제자 요한은 나이가 들어갈수록 자신의 가르침의 범위를 점점 좁혀가서, 그의 세 서신에서는 하나님의 사랑에만 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 피터 크리프트는 ‘하나님의 사랑에 대한 진실 알기’라는 그의 책에서 오랜 설화 하나를 인용하고 있습니다. 그 설화에서 요한의 한 젊은 제자가 어느 날 요한에게 나아와 “왜 다른 것에 대해서는 아무 말씀도 안 해 주세요?”라고 불평하자, 요한은 “왜냐하면 그것외에는 아무것도 없기
때문이라네.”라고 대답합니다.

하나님의 사랑이야말로 예수님의 사역과 가르침의 핵심입니다. 요한은 그가 먼저 기록한 복음서에 “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 그를 믿는 자마다 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이라”(요한복음 3:16)라고 기록하였습니다.

바울 사도는 우리 삶의 밑바탕에는 하나님의 사랑이 있다고 말하면서, “사망이나 생명이나 천사들이나 권세자들이나 현재 일이나 장래 일이나 능력이나 높음이나 깊음이나 다른 어떤 피조물이라도 우리를 우리 주 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없으리라”(로마서 8:38-39)라고 우리에게 상기시켜줍니다.

하나님의 사랑은 매우 강력하고 언제나 곁에 있으며 안정을 주기 때문에, 우리는 하나님이 우리에게 좋은 것들을 선물로 주시기에 시련도 하나님의 능력 안에서 극복할 수 있음을 알고 자신 있게 매일 매일을 살아갈 수 있습니다. 삶 전체에서 가장 중요한 것은 하나님의 사랑입니다.

What Matters Most

As Jesus’s beloved disciple John grew older, his teaching became increasingly narrowed, focusing entirely on the love of God in his three letters. In the book Knowing the Truth of God’s Love, Peter Kreeft cites an old legend which says that one of John’s young disciples once came to him complaining, “Why don’t you talk about anything else?” John replied, “Because there isn’t anything else.”

God’s love is certainly at the heart of the mission and message of Jesus. In his earlier gospel account, John recorded the words, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (JOHN 3:16).

The apostle Paul tells us that God’s love is at the core of how we live, and he reminds us that “neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (ROM. 8:38–39).

God’s love is so strong, available, and stabilizing that we can confidently step into each day knowing that the good things are gifts from His hand and the challenges can be faced in His strength. For all of life, His love is what matters most. - BILL CROWDER

모든 것은 하나님께로부터 온다

나는 18세 때 처음으로 정식 직장을 갖고, 저축을 하는 습관이 얼마나 중요한지를 배울 수 있었습니다. 나는 일하며 저축하여 일 년치 학비에 충분한 돈을 모았습니다. 그러다가 어머니가 위급한 수술을 받게 되었는데, 그때 나는 은행에 저축해둔 돈으로 어머니의 수술비용을 댈 수 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

그 순간 어머니를 향한 나의 사랑이 나의 장래 계획보다 더 우선했습니다. 엘리자베스 엘리엇이 쓴 ‘열정과 순결’이라는 책 내용 중 다음 문장이 나에게 새로운 의미로 다가왔습니다. “만약 우리에게 주어진 것을 놓아야 할 때에 놓지 않거나, 주신 분의 뜻대로 쓰지 않고 꼭 쥐고 있다면, 우리는 영혼의 성장을 방해하고 있는 것입니다. 우리는 ‘하나님께서 나에게 주셨으니 이건 내 거야. 내가 원하는 대로 할 수 있어.’라고 말합니다. 하지만, 그렇지 않습니다. 주신 것에 대해 주님께 감사하고, 그것을 주님께 다시 돌려드리는 것,..... 우리의 것을 놓아버리는 것이 참된 것입니다.”

나는 내게 주어진 일자리와 저축 습관이 하나님의 선물이라는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다! 내가 가족을 위해 아낌없이 줄 수 있었던 것은 하나님께서 다른 방법으로 나의 학업을 인도하시리라 믿었기 때문이었습니다. 그리고 실제로 하나님께서 그렇게 해주셨습니다.

전능하신 하나님은 역대상 29장 14절에서 다윗이 “모든 것이 주께로부터 말미암았사오니 우리가 주의 손에서 받은 것으로 주께 드렸을 뿐이니이다”라고 기도한 것처럼, 오늘날 우리도 그와 같이 우리 삶에 적용할 수 있기를 얼마나 바라시는지 모릅니다.

Everything Comes from God

I was 18 years old when I got my first fulltime job, and I learned an important lesson about the discipline of saving money. I worked and saved until I had enough money for a year of school. Then my mom had emergency surgery, and I realized I had the money in the bank to pay for her operation.

My love for my mother suddenly took precedence over my plans for the future. These words in the book Passion and Purity by Elisabeth Elliot took on new meaning: “If we hold tightly to anything given to us, unwilling to let it go when the time comes to let it go or unwilling to allow it to be used as the Giver means it to be used, we stunt the growth of the soul. It is easy to make a mistake here, ‘If God gave it to me’, we say, ‘it’s mine. I can do what I want with it.’ No. The truth is that it is ours to thank Him for and ours to offer back to Him, . . . ours to let go of.”

I realized that the job I had received and the discipline of saving were gifts from God! I could give generously to my family because I was sure God was capable of seeing me through school another way, and He did.

Today, how might God want us to apply David’s prayer from 1 Chronicles 29:14, “Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you first gave us” (NLT). - KEILA OCHOA

이 여자는 자기가 할 수 있는 일을 하였다

샬롯은 친구들이 소셜 미디어에 생각 없고 무분별한 글들을 올릴 때 정중하면서도 강한 어조로 맞섭니다. 그녀는 모든 사람들을 존중하면서 언제나 긍정적인 언어만을 사용합니다. 몇 년 전 그녀는 그리스도인들에게 분노를 품고 있는 남자와 페이스북을 통해 친구가 되었습니다. 그 남자는 샬롯의 보기 드물게 솔직하고 너그러운 점을 좋아했습니다. 시간이 지나면서 그의 적대감은 녹아 없어졌습니다. 그러던 중 샬롯은 넘어져서 크게 다쳤습니다. 바깥출입을 못하면서 그녀는 무엇을 할 수 있을지 몰라 마음이 초조했습니다. 그 무렵 그녀의 페이스북 친구가 세상을 떠났고 그의 여동생이 메시지를 보내왔습니다. “[당신의 전도로 인해] 나는 이제 우리 오빠가 하나님의 완전하고 변함없는 사랑을 체험하고 있다는 것을 압니다.”

그리스도께서 죽으시게 될 그 주간에, 베다니의 마리아는 아주 비싼 향유를 주님의 발과 머리에 부었습니다(요한복음 12:3; 마가복음 14:3). 거기에 있던 몇몇 사람들은 깜짝 놀랐지만, 예수님은 오히려 그녀를 칭찬하셨습니다. 예수님은 “그는 내게 아름다운 일을 했다...... 이 여자는 자기가 할 수 있는 일을 하였다. 곧 내 몸에 향유를 부어서 내 장례를 위하여 할 일을 미리 한 셈이다”(마가복음 14:6-8, 새번역)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

“이 여자는 자기가 할 수 있는 일을 하였다.”라는 그리스도의 말씀이 우리의 압박감을 덜어줍니다. 이 세상에는 깨어지고 상한 사람들로 가득 차 있습니다. 그러나 우리는 우리가 할 수 없는 일들로 염려할 필요가 없습니다. 샬롯은 그녀가 할 수 있는 일을 했고, 우리도 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 나머지는 주님의 전능하신 손길에 맡기면 됩니다.

She Did What She Could

When her friends say thoughtless or outrageous things on social media, Charlotte chimes in with gentle but firm dissent. She respects the dignity of everyone, and her words are unfailingly positive. A few years ago she became Facebook friends with a man who harbored anger toward Christians. He appreciated Charlotte’s rare honesty and grace. Over time his hostility melted. Then Charlotte suffered a bad fall. Now housebound, she fretted over what she could do. About that time her Facebook friend died and then this message arrived from his sister: “[Because of your witness] I know he’s now experiencing God’s complete and abiding love for him.”

During the week in which Christ would be killed, Mary of Bethany anointed Him with expensive perfume (JOHN 12:3; MARK 14:3). Some of those present were appalled, but Jesus applauded her. “She has done a beautiful thing to me,” He said. “She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial” (MARK 14:6–8).

“She did what she could.” Christ’s words take the pressure off. Our world is full of broken, hurting people. But we don’t have to worry about what we can’t do. Charlotte did what she could. So can we. The rest is in His capable hands. - TIM GUSTAFSON
