찬양하고 간구하기

위기의 청소년을 대상으로 뉴욕시에서 시작된 ‘틴 챌린지’라는 사역은 특이한 기도의 헌신에서 비롯되었습니다. 설립자인 데이빗 윌커슨은 자기의 텔레비전을 팔아버리고 TV를 보던 시간(매일 밤 2시간)에 기도를 하였습니다. 그 후 수개월 동안 그는 새로 시작할 일에 대한 확신을 얻음은 물론, 하나님을 찬양하고 간구하는 둘 사이의 균형에 대해서도 깨닫게 되었습니다.

솔로몬 왕의 성전 봉헌기도는 이러한 균형을 잘 보여줍니다. 솔로몬은 하나님의 거룩하심과 신실하심을 강조하는 것으로 시작합니다. 다음으로 그 계획이 성공적으로 마칠 수 있게 된 것에 대한 공로를 하나님께 돌리고, “하늘과 하늘들의 하늘이라도 주를 용납하지 못하겠거든 하물며 내가 건축한 이 성전이오리이까”(역대하 6:18)라고 외 치며 하나님의 위대하심을 강조합니다.

하나님을 칭송한 후에 솔로몬은 하나님께 성전에서 일어나는 모든 일을 특별히 보살펴달라고 간구합니다. 이스라엘 백성을 자비롭게 보셔서 그들이 죄를 고백할 때 자비를 베풀어달라고 하나님께 간구합니다.

솔로몬이 기도를 마치자마자, “불이 하늘에서부터 내려와서 그 번제물과 제물들을 사르고 여호와의 영광이 그 성전에 가득했습니다”(7:1). 이 놀라운 응답은 우리가 찬양하고 기도하는 그 전능하신 분이 우리의 간구를 들으시고 돌보시는 바로 그분이심을 깨닫게 해줍니다.

Praising and Asking

Teen Challenge, a ministry to at-risk youth that started in New York City, was born from an unusual commitment to prayer. Its founder, David Wilkerson, sold his television set and spent his TV-watching time (two hours each night) praying. In the months that followed, he not only gained clarity about his new endeavor but he also
learned about the balance between praising God and asking Him for help.

King Solomon’s temple dedication prayer shows this balance. Solomon began by highlighting God’s holiness and faithfulness. Then he gave God credit for the
success of the project and emphasized God’s greatness, declaring, “The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!” 2 CHRON. 6:18.

After exalting God, Solomon asked Him to pay special attention to everything that happened inside the temple. He asked God to show mercy to the Israelites and to provide for them when they confessed their sin.

Immediately after Solomon’s prayer, “fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple” 7:1. This incredible response reminds us that the mighty One we praise and speak to when we pray is the same One who listens to and cares about our requests. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

좋은 약

내가 살고 있는 가나의 아크라 시에서는 일부 택시와 미니버스 운전자들의 부주의한 운전과 욱하는 성질, 욕설 때문에 도로 위에서 싸움이 자주 일어납니다. 하지만 내가 목격했던 한 경우는 달랐습니다. 한 부주의한 택시 운전자가 버스를 거의 들이받을 뻔했습니다. 버스기사가 화가 나서 상대 운전자에게 소리를 지르겠거니 했는데, 그러질 않는 것이었습니다. 대신에 버스기사는 굳은 표정을 풀고, 안절부절 못하고 있는 택시기사를 향해 환한 미소를 지어보였습니다. 그리고 그 미소는 놀라운 결과를 가져왔습니다. 택시기사는 손을 들어 사과하며 미소를 지어보이면서 떠나갔습니다. 긴장이 해결되었습니다.

웃음은 인간의 뇌 화학체계에 놀라운 영향을 줍니다. 과학자들은 “우리가 웃을 때 실제 생리적으로 긴장을 완화시키는 효과를 지닌 엔돌핀이라는 뇌의 화학물질이 분비된다” 는 사실을 발견했습니다. 웃음이 긴장된 상황을 풀어줄 뿐만 아니라 우리 안의 긴장도 완화시켜주는 것입니다. 우리의 감정은 다른 사람들 뿐 아니라 우리 자신에게도 영향을 줍니다. 성경은 우리에게 “너희는 모든 악독과 노함과 분냄과 떠드는 것과 비방하는 것을 모든 악의와 함께 버리고 서로 친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기라”(에베소서 4:31-32)고 가르쳐줍니다.

화나 긴장이나 마음의 응어리가 하나님과의 관계나 타인과의 관계를 위태롭게 할 때, 우리 스스로의 기쁨과 안위를 위해 “마음의 즐거움은 양약”이라는 사실을 기억하는 게 도움이 됩니다.

Good Medicine

Careless driving, rising tempers, and use of foul language among some taxi and minibus drivers are a constant source of traffic fights in our city of Accra, Ghana. But one traffic incident I witnessed took a different turn. A bus was almost hit by a careless taxi driver. I expected the bus driver to get angry and yell at the other driver, but he didn’t. Instead, the bus driver relaxed his stern face and smiled broadly at the guilty looking taxi driver. And the smile worked wonders. With a raised hand, the taxi
driver apologized, smiled back, and moved away—the tension diffused.

A smile has a fascinating effect on our brain chemistry. Researchers have found that “when we smile it releases brain chemicals called endorphins which have an actual physiological relaxing effect.” Not only can a smile diffuse a tense situation, but it can also diffuse tension within us. Our emotions affect us as well as others. The Bible teaches us to “get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another” (EPH. 4:31-32).

When anger or tension or bitterness threatens our relationship with the Lord and with others, it helps to remember that “a cheerful heart is good medicine” for our own joy and well-being. - LAWRENCE DARMANI

갇힌 자들을 자유롭게

아내와 함께 조지아주 사바나 근교의 ‘막강 제8공군’ 국립박물관을 방문했을 때, 우리는 독일의 전쟁포로수용소 병영을 재현한 전쟁포로 전시물을 보고 깊은 감명을 받았습니다.

아내 말린의 아버지 짐은 2차 세계대전 때 유럽으로의 비행임무를 수행한 “막강 제8군”이라고 불린 제8공군에서 복무했었습니다. 전쟁 중에 제8 공군은 47,000명 이상이 부상당하고, 26,000 명 이상이 전사하는 피해를 입었습니다. 짐도 비행기가 추락하여 포로로 잡혔던 사람 중의 하나였습니다. 전시회장을 지나가며 우리는 짐이 그의 동료 포로들과 함께 풀려나던 날 느꼈던 엄청난 환희에 대해 했던 이야기를 회상했습니다.

시편 146편은 하나님이 억눌린 사람들을 돌아보시며 갇힌 자들에게 자유를 주신다고 선포합니다. 시편기자는 “억눌린 사람들을 위해 정의로 심판하시며 주린 자들에게 먹을 것을 주시고”, “갇힌 자들에게 자유를 주시는”이를 묘사하고 있습니다(7절). 이것들 모두 우리가 찬양하고 찬송할 이유들입니다. 그러나 무엇보다도 더 큰 자유는 죄책감과 수치로부터의 자유입니다. 예수님이 “그러므로 아들이 너희를 자유롭게 하면 너희가 참으로 자유로우리라”(요한복음 8:36)고 말씀하신 것도 전혀 놀랍지 않습니다.

그리스도의 희생을 통해 우리는 죄의 감옥에서 해방되어, 용서만이 가져다줄 수 있는 주님의 기쁨과 사랑, 그리고 자유를 알게 됩니다.

Setting Prisoners Free

When my wife and I visited the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force near Savannah, Georgia, we were especially moved by the prisoner-of-war exhibit, with its re-creation of a German prisoner-of- war camp’s barracks.

Marlene’s dad, Jim, served in the Eighth Air Force, the “Mighty Eighth,” as they flew missions over Europe during World War II. During the war, the Eighth Air Force suffered over 47,000 injuries and more than 26,000 deaths. Jim was one of those shot down and held as a prisoner of war. As we walked through the exhibit, we recalled Jim telling about the absolute joy he and his fellow prisoners felt the day they were set free.

God’s care for the oppressed and liberation of the imprisoned are declared in Psalm 146. The psalmist describes the one who “upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry,” who “sets prisoners free” (V. 7). All of this is cause for celebration and praise. But the greatest freedom of all is freedom from our guilt and shame. No wonder Jesus said, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (JOHN 8:36).

Through Christ’s sacrifice, we are set free from the prison of sin to know His joy and love and the freedom that only forgiveness can bring. - BILL CROWDER

외부인 사절

내가 어릴 때 살았던 가나의 외딴 시골에는 “냠냠 때는 친구도 사절” 이라는 잘 알려진 격언이 있었습니다. 종종 음식이 부족했기 때문에 주민들은 “냠냠 때”(식사시간)에 남을 방문하는 것을 실례로 여겼습니다. 이 격언은 이웃이나 외부인에게 똑같이 적용되었습니다,

그러나 내 가 또 한동안 살았던 필리핀에서는, 식사 시간에 갑자기 방문 하더라도 집주인은 음식이 충분히 있든 없든 상관없이 반드시 나누어 먹습니다. 문화란 이처럼 각기 합당한 이유들로 서로 다른 모습을 보여줍니다.

이스라엘 백성들이 애굽을 떠날 때 하나님은 그들의 문화를 지켜나갈 구체적인 지침들을 주셨습니다. 그러나 규율은, 비록 그것이 하나님의 규율이라 하더라도, 절대로 사람의 마음을 바꾸지 못합니다. 그래서 모세는 “너희는 마음에 할례를 행하고 다시는 목을 곧게 하지 말라”(신명기 10:16)고 말했습니다. 흥미롭게도 모세는 이런 도전을 주고 나서 바로 이스라엘이 외부인들을 어떻게 취급해야 하는가에 대해 이야기하였습니다. 모세는 하나님이 “나그네를 사랑하여 그에게 떡과 옷을 주시나니 너희는 나그네를 사랑하라 전에 너희도 애굽 땅에서 나그네 되었음이니라”(18-19절)라고 말했습니다.

이스라엘은 “신 가운데 신이시며 주 가운데 주시요 크고 능하시며 두려우신 하나님”(17절)을 섬겼습니다. 그들이 하나님의 백성이라는 것을 보여줄 수 있는 한 가지 강력한 방법은 그들의 문화권 밖에서 온 나그네들을 사랑하는 것이었습니다.

하나님의 성품을 보여주는 이 작은 모습 하나가 오늘날 우리에게 의미하는 것은 무엇일까요? 우리는 이 세상에서 소외되고 궁핍한 이들에게 어떻게 주님의 사랑을 보여줄 수 있을까요?

No Outsiders

In the remote region of Ghana where I lived as a boy, “Chop time, no friend” was a common proverb. Locals considered it impolite to visit at “chop time” (mealtime) because food was often scarce. The maxim applied to neighbors and outsiders alike.

But in the Philippines, where I also lived for a time, even if you visit unannounced at mealtime, your hosts will insist on sharing with you regardless of whether they have enough for themselves. Cultures differ for their own good reasons.

As the Israelites left Egypt, God provided specific instructions to govern their culture. But rules—even God’s rules—can never change hearts. So Moses said, “Change your hearts and stop being stubborn” DEUT. 10:16 NLT. Interestingly, right after issuing that challenge Moses took up the topic of Israel’s treatment of outsiders. God “loves the foreigner residing among you,” he said, “giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt” VV. 18-19.

Israel served the “God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome” V. 17. One powerful way they were to show their identification with God was by loving foreigners— those from outside their culture.

하나님이 생각나게 해주시는 것들

내 친구 밥 호너는 예수님을 “생각나게 해주시는 데 전문가”라고 말합니다. 이것은 우리가 의심도 많고 잊어버리기도 잘하기 때문에 참 다행한 일입니다. 예수님이 이 땅에 계실 때 주님께로 온 사람들의 필요를 그처럼 많이 충족시켜주셨는데도 불구하고, 초기의 제자들은 그들이 가난에 처하지는 않을까 두려워했습니다. 그들은 기적들을 목격했으면서도 주님이 그들에게 기억하기를 원하는 더 큰 의미를 이해하지 못했습니다.

갈릴리 바다를 건너가는 도중에 제자들은 떡 가져오는 것을 잊은 것을 알고는 걱정하며 수군거리고 있었습니다. 그때 예수님은 제자들에게 “아직도 알지 못하며 깨닫지 못하느냐 너희 마음이 둔하냐 너희가 눈이 있어도 보지 못하며 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하느냐 또 기억하지 못하느냐”(마가복음 8:17-18)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러고 나서 주님이 떡 다섯 개로 오천 명을 먹이셨을 때 제자들이 남은 조각을 열두 바구니 거두었던 것과, 일곱 개의 떡으로 사천 명을 먹이셨을 때 남은 것을 일곱 광주리 거두었던 사실을 상기시켜주셨습니다. 그러고 나서 주님은 제자들에게 “아직도 깨닫지 못하느냐”(21절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

주님이 사람들의 육신의 필요를 기적적인 방법으로 공급해주신 그 일은, 주님이 생명의 떡이요 주님의 몸이 그들과 우리를 위해 “찢기실” 것이라는 더 큰 진리를 보여준 것이었습니다.

성찬식 때 떡을 떼고 잔을 마실 때마다 우리는 우리 주님의 크신 사랑과 베푸심을 떠올리게 됩니다.

God’s Reminders

My friend Bob Horner refers to Jesus as “the Master Reminder.” And that is good, because we are so doubting and forgetful. No matter how often Jesus met the needs of the people who came to Him when He was here on earth, His first disciples feared they would somehow be left in need. After witnessing miracles, they failed to understand the greater meaning the Lord wanted them to remember.

On a journey across the Sea of Galilee, the disciples realized they had forgotten to bring bread and were talking about it. Jesus asked them, “Do you
still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember?” (MARK 8:17–18). Then He reminded them that when He fed five thousand people with five loaves, the disciples had collected twelve basketfuls of leftover pieces. And when He fed four thousand with seven loaves, they filled seven baskets with leftovers. Then “He said to them, ‘Do you still not understand?’” (V. 21).

The Lord’s miraculous provision for people’s physical needs pointed to the greater truth—that He was the Bread of Life and that His body would be “broken” for them and for us.

Every time we eat the bread and drink the cup during the Lord’s Supper, we are reminded of our Lord’s great love and provision for us. - DAVID MCCASLAND

붙잡으라

중국 장가계에 위치하고 있는 천문산은 세계에서 가장 아름다운 산 중의 하나로 여겨집니다. 그 장엄하고 화려한 모습의 높고 우뚝 솟은 절벽을 보려면 7,455미터(4.5마일) 거리를 운행하는 천문산 케이블카를 타야 합니다. 케이블카 자체에 모터가 없이 그처럼 장거리를 운행하면서 가파른 산을 오른다는 것은 정말 놀라운 일입니다. 하지만 케이블카는 강력한 모터에 의해 움직이는 케이블에 단단히 매달려 있어 이 같은 환상적인 높이까지 안전하게 운행하고 있습니다.

믿음의 여정에서 우리는 어떻게 경주를 잘 마치고, “푯대를 향하여 그리스도 안에서 하나님이 위에서 부르신 부름의 상을 위하여 달려갈”(빌립보서 3:14) 수 있을까요? 우리도 케이블카처럼 그리스도를 단단히 붙잡아야 합니다. 바울이 “주님 안에 굳건히 서 계십시오”(4:1, 새번역)라고 말한 것도 바로 그런 의미입니다. 우리 자신에게는 아무런 수단도 없습니다. 계속 앞으로 나아가기 위해서 우리는 그리스도를 온전히 의지해야 합니다. 주님은 우리를 커다란 시련들을 지나 안전하게 본향으로 인도하실 것입니다.

바울 사도는 그의 생애를 마감하면서 “나는 선한 싸움을 싸우고 나의 달려갈 길을 마치고 믿음을 지켰다”(디모데후서 4:7)라고 말했습니다. 당신도 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 단지 예수님을 단단히 붙잡기만 하십시오.

Hold On

Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, China, is considered one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. To view its towering cliffs in all their glorious splendor, you must take the Tianmen Shan cable car, which covers a distance of 7,455 meters (4.5 miles). It’s amazing how this cable car can travel such long distances and scale such steep mountains without any motor on the car itself. Yet it moves safely up these spectacular heights by keeping a strong grip on a cable that is moved by a powerful motor.

In our journey of faith, how can we finish the race well and “press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called [us] heavenward in Christ Jesus”? (PHIL. 3:14). Like the cable car, we keep a strong grip on Christ, which is what Paul meant when he said “stand firm in the Lord” (4:1). We have no resources of our own. We depend fully on Christ to keep us moving forward. He will take us through the greatest challenges and lead us safely home.

Toward the end of his earthly life, the apostle Paul declared, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 TIM. 4:7). You can too. Simply keep a strong grip on Christ. - ALBERT LEE

틀린 믿음, 바른 믿음

“믿음을 가져야 한다”고 사람들이 말하는데, 이 말의 뜻이 무엇일까요? 아무 믿음이나 다 바른 믿음일까요? 1세기 전 어느 긍정적인 사람이 이런 글을 썼습니다. “당신 자신을 믿으십시오. 당신 안에는 어떤 장애물도 능가하는 더 큰것이있습니다.” 이말은듣기에는 좋은 말일지는몰라도 전혀 현실적이지 않습니다. 우리에게는 우리 자신보다 더 큰 어떤 것에 대한 믿음이 필요합니다.

하나님은 아브람에게 많은 후손을 주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다(창세기15:4-5). 그러나 그러기에는 큰 장애물이 그를 가로막고 있었는데, 그는 이미 늙었고 아직 자녀가 없었습니다. 아브람과 사라는 하나님의 약속이 성취되는 것을 기다리다 지쳐서 자신들이 직접 그 장애를 해결하려 했습니다. 그 결과, 가족 관계가 무너지고 원치 않았던 많은 불화가 초래되었습니다(창세기 16장; 21:8-21 참조).

자신의 힘으로는 아무것도 할 수 없었던 아브라함 이었지만, 그는 마침내 위대한 믿음의 사람이 되었습니다. 바울은 그에 대하여 이렇게 썼습니다. “아브라함이 바랄 수 없는 중에 바라고 믿었으니 이는 네 후손이 이 같으리라 하신 말씀대로 많은 민족의 조상이 되게 하려 하심이라”(로마서 4:18). 이 믿음이 “그에게 의로 여겨졌다”(22절) 고 바울은 말합니다.

Bad Faith, Good Faith

“You gotta have faith,” people say. But what does that mean? Is any faith good faith? “Believe in yourself and all that you are,” wrote one positive thinker a century ago. “Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.” As nice as that may sound, it falls to pieces when it crashes into reality. We need a faith in something bigger than ourselves.

God promised Abram he would have a multitude of descendants (GEN. 15:4–5), so he faced a huge obstacle—he was old and childless. When he and Sarah got tired of waiting for God to make good on His promise, they tried to overcome that obstacle on their own. As a result, they fractured their family and created a lot of unnecessary dissension (see GEN. 16 and 21:8–21).

Nothing Abraham did in his own strength worked. But ultimately he became known as a man of tremendous faith. Paul wrote of him, “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be’” (ROM. 4:18). This faith, said Paul, “was credited to him as righteousness” (V. 22).

Abraham’s faith was in something far bigger than himself—the one and only God. It’s the object of our faith that makes all the difference.

돌을 던지면 닿을 만큼 가까이

종교지도자들이 무리를 지어 간음한 여인을 예수님께로 끌고 왔을 때, 그들은 그들이 그 여자를 예수님의 은혜에 돌을 던지면 닿을 듯 가까이 데려가고 있음을 알지 못했습니다. 그들은 예수님을 곤경에 빠트리고 싶어 했습니다. 만약 예수님이 그 여자를 보내주라고 한다면 그들은 예수님이 모세의 율법을 어긴다고 주장할 수 있었고, 또 만약 예수님이 여자를 죽이라고 한다면 그를 따르는 군중들이 예수님의 자비와 은혜의 말씀을 저버릴 것이었습니다.

그러나 예수님은 고소인들의 그 상황을 반전 시키셨습니다. 성경은 예수님이 그들에게아무말씀도안하시고땅에글씨를 쓰기 시작하셨다고 말합니다. 종교지도자들이 계속해서 예수님께 묻자, 주님은 누구든지 죄 없는 사람이 먼저 돌을 던지라고 하시며 땅에 다시 글씨를 쓰기 시작하셨습니다. 주님이 다시 고개를 드셨을 때 고소하던 사람들은 그 자리에 아무도 없었습니다.

죄가 없기에 돌을 던질 수 있는 오직 한 사람이 이제 여인을 보고 자비를 베푸셨습니다. “예수께서 이르시되 나도 너를 정죄하지 아니하노니 가서 다시는 죄를 범하지 말라 하시니라”(요한복음 8:11).

오늘 당신이 다른 사람들을 비판한 것을 용서받아야 한다든지, 또는 하나님의 은혜로 용서 받지 못할 죄가 없다는 것에 대한 확신이 필요하다면, 다음의 말에 용기를 얻으십시오. ‘아무도 돌을 던지지 않으니 지금 가서 하나님의 자비로 변화되어라.’

Within a Stone's Throw

As a group of religious leaders herded an adulterous woman toward Jesus, they couldn’t know they were carrying her within a stone’s throw of grace. Their hope was to dis- credit Him. If He told them to let the woman go, they could claim He was breaking Mosaic law. But if He condemned
her to death, the crowds following Him would have dismissed His words of mercy and grace.

But Jesus turned the tables on the accusers. Scripture says that rather than answering them directly, He started writing on the ground. When the leaders continued to question Him, He invited any of them who had never sinned to throw the first stone, and then He started writing on the ground again. The next time He looked up, all the accusers were gone.

Now the only person who could have thrown a stone—the only sinless one—looked at the woman and gave her mercy. “ ‘Then neither do I condemn you,’ Jesus declared. ‘Go now and leave your life of sin’” (JOHN 8:11).

Whether today finds you needing forgiveness for judging others or desiring assurance that no sin is beyond His grace, be encouraged by this: No one is throwing stones today; go and be changed by God’s mercy. - RANDY KILGORE

오늘 당신을 위해 기도하고 있습니다

난처한상황이나어려운문제에직면할때우리는자주주위에있는 예수 그리스도 안의 형제자매들에게 기도요청을 합니다. 우리를 생각해주는 누군가가 기도로 우리를 하나님께 올려준다는 것을 아는 건 큰 위로가 됩니다. 하지만 만일 당신에게 그런 가까운 그리스도인 친구들이 없다면 어떨까요? 만일 당신이 예수 그리스도의 복음이 거부당하는 곳에 살고 있다면 누가 당신을 위해 기도해 줄까요?

성경에서 위대하고 승리에 찬 장 중의 하나인 로마서 8장은 이렇게 선포합니다. “우리는 마땅히 기도할 바를 알지 못하나 오직성령이말할수없는탄식으로우리를 위하여 친히 간구 하시느니라...... 이는 성령이 하나님의 뜻대로 성도를 위하여 간구 하심이니라”(로마서 8:26-27). 성령님이 오늘 당신을 위해 기도하고 계십니다.

성경은 또 말합니다. “누가 정죄하리요 죽으실 뿐 아니라 다시 살아나신 이는 그리스도 예수시니 그는 하나님 우편에 계신 자요 우리를 위하여 간구하시는 자시니라”(34절). 살아 계신 주 예수 그리스도께서 오늘 당신을 위해 기도하고 계십니다.

기도를 들으시고 당신을 대신하여 일하시는 하나님 아버지께 성령님과 주 예수 그리스도께서 당신의 이름과 필요들을 아뢴다는 사실을 생각해 보십시오!

당신이 어디에 있든지 당신이 처한 상황이 얼마나 혼란 스럽던지, 당신 홀로 인생을 대하고 있는 것이 아닙니다. 성령님과 성자 예수님께서 당신을 위해 오늘 기도하고 계십니다!

Praying For You Today

When we face a perplexing situation or a tough problem, we often ask our brothers and sisters in Christ to pray for us. It’s a great encouragement to know that others who care are holding us up to God in prayer. But what if you don’t have close Christian friends? Perhaps you live where the gospel of Christ is opposed. Who will pray for you?

Romans 8, one of the great, triumphant chapters of the Bible, declares, “We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. . . . The Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God” (ROM. 8:26–27). The Holy Spirit is praying for you today.

In addition, “Christ Jesus who died more than that, who was raised to life is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us” (V. 34). The living Lord Jesus Christ is praying for you today.

Think of it! The Holy Spirit and the Lord Jesus Christ mention your name and your needs to God the Father, who hears and acts on your behalf.

참된 부유함

친구 아버지의 추모예배에서 누군가가 친구에게 말했습니다. “당신의 아버지를 만나기 전까지 나는 사람이 다른 이들을 도우면서 즐거움을 느낄 수 있다는 것을 알지 못했습니다.” 그 친구의 아버지는 다른 사람들을 돕고, 웃고, 사랑하며, 모르는 사람들과 만나 친구가 되는 일들을 통해 하나님의 나라를 세워나가는데 한 부분을 담당했습니다. 친구 아버지는 돌아가시며 사랑의 유산을 남겼습니다. 그와는 반대로 내 친구의 큰고모는 그녀의 재산을 유산이라 여기고, 인생의 마지막 몇 년을 자신의 가보와 고서들을 누가 지켜낼 수 있을까를 고민하며 보냈습니다.

예수님은 그의 가르침과 비유를 통해 주님을 따르는 자들에게 재물을 쌓아두지 말고 가난한 자들에게 나누어주며, 녹슬거나 썩지 않는 것들을 귀하게 여기라고 경고하셨습니다. 예수님은 “너희 보물 있는 곳에는 너희 마음도 있으리라”(누가복음 12:34)고 하셨습니다.

우리는 우리가 소유한 것들이 삶에 의미를 부여한다고 생각할 수도 있습니다. 하지만 최신기기가 망가지거나 어떤 가치 있는 물건을 잃어버릴 때, 우리는 우리를 만족시키고 영원히 지속하는 것은 오직 우리와 주님과의 관계라는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 시들거나 없어지지 않는 것은 우리의 사랑으로 다른 사람들을 돌보는 일입니다.

우리가 가치 있게 여겨야 할 것이 무엇인지 분명히 볼 수 있고, 우리의 마음이 어디에 있는지 보여주시고, 그 무엇보다도 하나님의 나라를 먼저 구할 수 있도록 도와달라고 주님께 간구합시다(12:31).

True Riches

At the memorial service for my friend’s dad, someone said to her, “Until I met your father, I didn’t know a person could have fun while helping others.” Her dad contributed his part in helping to build the kingdom of God through serving people, laughing and loving, and meeting strangers who became friends. When he died, he left a legacy of love. In contrast, my friend’s aunt—her father’s older sister—viewed her possessions as her legacy, spending her latter years worrying about who would protect her heirlooms and rare books.

In His teaching and by His example, Jesus warned His followers to avoid hoarding possessions, to give to the poor, and to value what will not rust or decay. “For where your treasure is,” Jesus said, “there your heart will be also” (LUKE 12:34).

We might think our things give meaning to our life. But when the latest gadget breaks or we misplace or lose some- thing valuable, we begin to realize that it is our relationship with the Lord that satisfies and endures. It is our love and care for others that does not wither and fade away.

Let’s ask the Lord to help us see clearly what we value, to show us where our heart is, and to help us seek His kingdom above all (12:31). - AMY BOUCHER PYE
