겉치레

케리는 사람들로부터 칭찬받기 위해 열심히 노력합니다. 그녀는 사람들이 그녀의 즐거운 태도를 알아차리고 칭찬하도록 대부분의 시간을 행복한 것처럼 행동합니다. 어떤 이들은 그녀가 지역사회에서 사람들을 돕는 것을 보기 때문에 그녀를 지지해줍니다. 그러나 솔직히 돌아본다면, 케리는 “나는 주님을 사랑하지만 어떤 때는 나의 삶이 겉치레처럼 느껴집니다.”라고 인정할 것입니다. 다른 사람들에게 잘 보이려고 하는 그녀의 많은 노력 뒤에는 불안감이 있고, 또 계속 그렇게 할 힘이 점점 사라져간다고 그녀는 말합니다.

완벽한 동기들을 갖는 것은 불가능하기 때문에 아마 우리는 모두 어떤 식으로든 이런 상황을 이해할 수 있을 것입니다. 우리는 주님과 다른 사람들을 사랑하지만, 그리스도인의 삶을 살아가는 방법과 동기들은 때때로 인정받고 칭찬받기 원하는 우리의 욕망과 뒤섞여 있습니다.

예수님은 사람에게 보이려고 구제하고, 기도하고, 금식하는 사람들에 대해 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 6:1-6). 주님은 산상수훈에서 “네 구제함을 은밀하게 하라”, “은밀한 중에 계신 네 아버지께 기도하라”, 그리고 “금식할 때 슬픈 기색을 보이지 말라”고 가르치셨습니다(4,6, 16절).

섬김은 주로 공개적으로 하게 되지만, 아무도 모르게 하는 작은 섬김이 우리들에 대한 하나님의 마음을 우리가 볼 수 있도록 도와줄 것입니다. 그분의 형상대로 우리를 만드신 하나님께서 우리를 너무도 귀하게 보셔서 그분의 아들을 우리에게 주셨고, 그분의 사랑을 매일 우리에게 보여주십니다.

A Façade

Kerri tries hard to get people to admire her. She acts happy most of the time so that others will notice and compliment her on her joyful attitude. Some affirm her because they see her helping people in the community. But in a transparent moment Kerri will admit, “I love the Lord, but in some ways I feel like my life is a façade.” Her own sense of insecurity is behind much of her effort of trying to look good to others, and she says she’s running out of energy to keep it up.

We can probably all relate in some way because it’s not possible to have perfect motives. We love the Lord and others, but our motives for how we livethe Christian life are sometimes mixed with our desire to be valued or praised.

Jesus talked about those who give, pray, and fast in order to be seen (MATT. 6:1–6). He taught in the Sermon on the Mount to “give your gifts in private,” to “pray to your Father in private,” and “when you fast, don’t make it obvious” (VV. 4, 6, 16 NLT).

Serving is most often done publicly, but maybe a little anonymous service could help us learn to rest in God’s opinion of us. He who created us in His image values us so much that He gave us His Son and shows us His love each day. - ANNE CETAS

열두 번째 선수

텍사스 A&M 대학교 미식축구경기장에는 “열두 번째 선수의 집”이라는 큰 표지판이 걸려 있습니다. 열한 명의 선수가 한 팀이 되어 운동장에서 벌이는 경기에서 열두 번째 선수란 경기 내내 일어서서 자신의 팀을 응원하는 수천 명의 A&M 대학교 학생들의 존재를 말합니다. 이 전통은 1922년으로 거슬러 올라가, 감독이 관전 중인 한 학생에게 선수 옷으로 차려입고 부상당한 선수 대신 출전할 준비를 하라고 요청한데서 비롯되었습니다. 그 학생이 경기에 투입되지는 않았지만, 기꺼이 사이드라인에서 대기해준 것이 팀의 사기를 크게 진작시켰던 것입니다.

히브리서 11장은 엄청난 시련을 당하면서도 하나님께 변함없이 충성했던 믿음의 영웅들을 묘사하고 있습니다. 12장은 이렇게 시작됩니다. “이러므로 우리에게 구름 같이 둘러싼 허다한 증인들이 있으니 모든 무거운 것과 얽매이기 쉬운 죄를 벗어버리고 인내로써 우리 앞에 당한 경주를 하며”(1절).

우리는 신앙여정을 혼자 가는 것이 아닙니다. 주님께 충성했던 위대한 성인들과 평범한 사람들이 그들의 본보기로, 그리고 그들이 지금 천국에 있다는 사실로 우리를 격려해줍니다. 그들은 우리가 아직 경기장에 있을 때, 우리와 함께 서 있는 영적인 열두 번째 선수인 것입니다.

“믿음의 주요 또 온전하게 하시는 이인”(12:2) 예수님께 우리의 시선을 고정시킬 때, 우리는 주님을 따랐던 모든 사람들로부터 격려를 받습니다.

The Twelfth Man

A large sign at the Texas A&M University football stadium says “HOME OF THE 12TH MAN.” While each team is allowed eleven players on the field, the 12th Man is the presence of thousands of A&M students who remain standing during the entire game to cheer their team on. The tradition traces its roots to 1922 when the coach called a student from the stands to suit up and be ready to replace an injured player. Although he never entered the game, his willing presence on the sideline greatly encouraged the team.

Hebrews 11 describes heroes of the faith who faced great trials and remained loyal to God. Chapter 12 begins, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (V. 1).

We are not alone on our journey of faith. The great saints and ordinary people who have been faithful to the Lord encourage us by their example and also by their presence in heaven. They are a spiritual 12th Man standing with us while we are still on the field.

As we fix our eyes on Jesus, “the pioneer and perfecter of faith” (12:2), we are spurred on by all those who followed Him. - DAVID MCCASLAND

나는 중요한 존재인가?

동네 슈퍼마켓에서 계산대에 줄 서 있는 동안 주위를 둘러보았습니다. 스낵식품들을 둘러보고 있는 코걸이를 한 삭발머리 십대들, 고기 한 덩이와 아스파라거스 몇 줄기, 그리고 고구마 한 개를 사고 있는 젊은 직장인, 복숭아와 딸기를 고르고 있는 노부인이 있었습니다. 나는 스스로에게 물어보았습니다. ‘하나님은 이 모든 사람들의 이름을 알고 계실까? 그들이 정말 하나님께 중요한 존재일까?’

만물을 창조하신 분이 모든 인간을 창조하셨기에, 우리 각 사람은 그분의 개인적인 관심과 사랑을 받을 만하다는 생각이 들었습니다. 하나님은 그 사랑을 이스라엘의 울퉁불퉁한 언덕을 지나 마침내 십자가에 달리신 그분을 통해 보여주셨습니다.

예수님이 섬기는 자의 모습으로 이 세상에 오셨을 때, 주님의 손은 세상에서 가장 작은 사람을 섬기기에 지나치게 크지 않다는 것을 보여주셨습니다. 그 손은 우리 각 사람의 이름과 우리를 정말 많이 사랑하신 대가로 치른 상처가 새겨져 있는 손입니다.

이제 내가 욥기나 전도서 같은 책에 잘 표현되어 있는 외로움의 아픔에 짓눌려 자기연민에 빠져있는 나 자신을 발견할 때, 나는 복음서에 나타난 예수님의 이야기와 행적들을 찾아봅니다. 만약 내가 “해 아래에서”(전도서 1:3) 나의 존재가 하나님께 별 의미가 없다고 결론짓는다면, 나는 하나님이 이 땅에 오신 주된 이유 중 하나를 부정하는 것입니다. ‘나는 중요한 존재인가?’라는 질문의 답은 바로 예수님이십니다.

Do I Matter?

I stand in the cashier line of the local supermarket and look around me. I see teenagers with shaved heads and nose rings looking through the snack foods; a young professional buying one steak, a few twigs of asparagus, and a sweet potato; an elderly woman pondering the peaches and strawberries. Does God know all these people by name? I ask myself. Do they really matter to Him?

The Maker of all things is the Maker of all human beings, and each of us is deemed worthy of His individual attention and love. God demonstrated that love in person on the gnarly hills of Israel and ultimately on the cross.

When Jesus visited earth in the form of a servant, He showed that the hand of God is not too big for the smallest person in the world. It is a hand engraved with our individual names and engraved also with wounds, the cost to God of loving us so much.

Now, when I find myself wallowing in self-pity, overwhelmed by the ache of loneliness that is articulated so well in books like Job and Ecclesiastes, I turn to the Gospel accounts of Jesus’s stories and deeds. If I conclude that my existence “under the sun” (ECCL. 1:3) makes no difference to God, I contradict one of the main reasons God came to earth. To the question Do I matter? All Together Now

While Nicholas Taylor was boarding a train in Perth, Australia, his leg became wedged in the gap between the platform and a commuter car. When safety officials could not free him, they coordinated the efforts of nearly 50 passengers who lined up and, on the count of three, pushed against the train. Working in unison, they shifted the weight just enough to free Taylor’s leg.

The apostle Paul recognized the power of Christians working together in many of his letters to the early churches. He urged the Roman believers to accept each other the way Christ had accepted them and said, “[May God] give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (ROM. 15:5–6).

Unity with other believers enables us to broadcast God’s greatness and also helps us to endure persecution. Knowing that the Philippians would pay a price for their faith, Paul encouraged them to strive “together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you” (PHIL. 1:27–28).

Satan loves to divide and conquer, but his efforts fail when, with God’s help, we “make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (EPH. 4:3). - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

나는 강당에 앉아 시선을 목사에게 고정시키고 똑바로 보고 있었습니다. 내 자세는 그가 말하는 모든 것을 내가 흡수하고 있다는 것을 암시하고 있었습니다. 그런데 갑자기 모든 사람들이 웃으면서 박수치는 소리가 들렸습니다. 나는 놀라 주위를 돌아보았습니다. 목사님이 무언가 재미있는 이야기를 한 것 같았지만, 나는 그것이 무엇인지 전혀 알 수 없었습니다. 겉으로 보기에 주의 깊게 듣는 것처럼 보였지만 실제 내 마음은 멀리 떠나 있었던 것입니다.

말하는 것을 듣기는 하지만 귀를 기울이지 못할 수 있고, 쳐다보지만 제대로 보지 못할 수 있으며, 자리에 앉아 있지만 자리에 없는 것 같을 수 있습니다. 우리는 그런 상황에서 우리에게 중요한 메시지를 놓칠 수 있습니다.

에스라가 유다 백성들에게 하나님의 가르침을 읽어주었을때, “뭇 백성이 그 율법책에 귀를 기울였습니다”(느헤미야 8:3). 뜻을 해석해주는 것에 주의를 기울임으로 그들은 다 깨닫게 되었고 (8절), 그것은 곧 회개와 부흥을 가져왔습니다. 사마리아에서 있었던 다른 경우를 보면, 예루살렘의 신자들에게 박해가 있은 후 (사도행전 8:1) 빌립은 사마리아 백성들에게로 나아갔습니다. 군중들은 그가 행한 표적을 보았을 뿐만 아니라, “그가 하는 말에 한 마음으로 귀를 기울였습니다”(6절, 새번역). “그래서 그 성에는 큰 기쁨이 넘쳤습니다” (8절, 새번역).

Pay Close Attention

As I sat in the auditorium, I faced the pastor with my eyes fixed on him. My posture suggested I was absorbing everything he was saying. Suddenly I heard everybody laughing and clapping. Surprised, I looked about. The preacher had apparently said something humorous, but I had no clue what it might have been. From all appearances I had been listening carefully, but in reality my mind was far away.

It’s possible to hear what is being said but not listen, to watch but not see, to be present and yet absent. In such a condition, we may miss important messages meant for us.

As Ezra read God’s instructions to the people of Judah, “All the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law” (NEH. 8:3). Their attention to the explanation produced understanding (V. 8), which resulted in their repentance and revival. In another situation in Samaria, Philip, after persecution of the believers broke out in Jerusalem (ACTS 8:1), reached out to the Samaritan people. The crowd not only observed the miraculous signs he did, but they also “paid close attention to what he said” (V. 6). “So there was great joy in that city” (V. 8).

The mind can be like a wandering adventurer that misses a lot of excitement close by. Nothing deserves more attention than words that help us discover the joy and wonder of our Father in heaven. - LAWRENCE DARMANI

빵이요!

내가 살고 있는 멕시코의 한 작은 도시에서는 매일 아침저녁으로 “빵이요!”라고 외치는 독특한 소리를 들을 수 있습니다. 큰 바구니를 자전거에 매단 사람이 갓 구운 달고 짭짤한 여러 종류의 빵을 파는 것입니다. 전에 큰 도시에 살 때엔 빵을 사려면 빵집에 가야했습니다. 하지만 지금은 집 앞으로 배달되는 신선한 빵을 즐깁니다.

몸의 허기를 채우는 것에서 영적인 허기를 채우는 것으로 생각을 옮겨보면서 나는 예수님의 다음 말씀을 생각해봅니다. “나는 하늘에서 내려온 살아 있는 떡이니 사람이 이 떡을 먹으면 영생하리라”(요한복음 6:51).

어떤 사람은 전도란 실제로 한 거지가 다른 거지에게 빵을 어디서 찾았는지 말해주는 것이라고 했습니다. 우리 중 많은 사람들이 이렇게 말할 수 있습니다. “나는 한 때 내 죄 때문에 영적으로 허기지고 굶주렸습니다. 그때 나는 좋은 소식을 들었습니다. 누군가가 내게 빵을 어디서 찾을 수 있는지를, 즉 예수님 안에서 찾을 수 있다는 것을 알려주었습니다. 그리고 내 삶이 변화되었습다!”

이제 우리에게는 다른 사람들에게 생명의 양식을 알려줄 특권과 책임이 있습니다. 동네에서, 일터에서, 학교에서, 오락장소에서 우리는 예수님에 대한 말씀을 나눌 수 있으며, 대합실이나 버스, 기차에서도 우리는 예수님에 대해 말할 수 있습니다. 그리고 우정의 문을 통해서도 다른 이들에게 좋은 소식을 전할 수 있습니다.

예수님은 생명의 양식입니다. 모든 사람들에게 이 놀라운 소식을 전해줍시다.

Bread!

I live in a small Mexican city where every morning and evening you can hear a distinctive cry: “Bread!” A man with a huge basket on his bike offers a great variety of fresh sweet and salty breads for sale. I used to live in a bigger city, where I had to go to the bakery to buy bread. So I enjoy having fresh bread brought to my door.

Moving from the thought of feeding physical hunger to spiritual hunger, I think of Jesus’s words: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever” (JOHN 6:51).

Someone has said that evangelism is really one beggar telling another beggar where he found bread. Many of us can say, “Once I was spiritually hungry, spiritually starving because of my sins. Then I heard the good news. Someone told me where to find bread: in Jesus. And my life changed!”

Now we have the privilege and the responsibility of pointing others to this Bread of Life. We can share Jesus in our neighborhood, in our workplace, in our school, in our places of recreation. We can talk about Jesus in the waiting room, on the bus, or on the train. We can take the good news to others through doors of friendship.

Jesus is the Bread of Life. Let’s tell everybody the great news. - KEILA OCHOA

올바른 관점

랄리는 힘이 센 개처럼 보입니다. 그 개는 크고 근육이 발달되어 있으며 두꺼운 털로 덮여있습니다. 그리고 몸무게도 백 파운드 (약 45킬로그램)가 넘습니다! 그런 모습에도 불구하고 랄리는 사람들과 잘 어울립니다. 랄리의 주인은 그 개를 양로원이나 병원에 데리고 다니면서 사람들에게 미소를 선사합니다.

한 번은 네 살짜리 어린 소녀가 방 건너편에 있는 랄리를 보았습니다. 소녀는 그 개를 만지고 싶었지만 겁이 나서 가까이 가지 못했습니다. 그러나 결국 소녀의 호기심이 경계심을 눌러, 소녀는 몇 분 동안 개에게 말을 걸고 쓰다듬었습니다. 소녀는 그 개가 힘은 세지만 온순하다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다.

이러한 속성들의 조화로운 어울림은 신약성경에서 읽은 예수님의 모습을 떠올려주었습니다. 어린아이들을 반겨주셨던 예수님은(마태복음 19:13-15) 가까이 다가갈 수 있는 분이셨습니다. 그분은 절망적인 상황에 놓인 간음한 여인에게 친절을 베푸셨습니다(요한복음 8:1-11). 예수님은 측은히 여기는 마음으로 군중들을 가르치셨습니다(마가복음 6:34). 동시에 예수님은 놀라운 능력을
가진 분이셨습니다. 주님이 마귀를 제압하고, 광풍을 잠재우고, 죽은 사람들을 다시 살리셨을 때, 사람들은 놀라고 경악했습니다!(마가복음 1:21-34; 4:35-41; 요한복음 11).

예수님을 보는 관점이 우리와 그분과의 관계를 결정합니다. 만약 그분의 능력에만 초점을 맞춘다면, 우리는 만화책 속에 있는 슈퍼히어로를 찬미하는 것처럼 거리를 두고 예수님을 대하게 될지도 모릅니다. 또 그분의 인자하심만을 지나치게 강조한다면, 예수님을 너무 무심하게 대할 위험이 있습니다. 하지만 사실 예수님은 동시에 양쪽을 다 가지신 분입니다. 주님은 우리의 순종을 받으시기에 합당한 위대한 분이신 동시에 우리를 친구라고 불러주실 정도로 겸손한 분이십니다.

Seeing Well

Raleigh looks like a powerful dog—he is large and muscular and has a thick coat of fur. And he weighs over 100 pounds! Despite his appearance, Raleigh connects well with people. His owner takes him to nursing homes and hospitals to bring people a smile.

Once, a four-year-old girl spotted Raleigh across a room. She wanted to pet him, but was afraid to get close. Eventually, her curiosity overcame her sense of caution and she spent several minutes talking to him and petting him. She discovered that he is a gentle creature, even though he is powerful.

The combination of these qualities reminds me of what we read about Jesus in the New Testament. Jesus was approachable— He welcomed little children (MATT. 19:13–15). He was kind to an adulterous woman in a desperate situation (JOHN 8:1–11). Compassion motivated Him to teach crowds (MARK 6:34). At the same time, Jesus’s power was astounding. Heads turned and jaws dropped as He subdued demons, calmed violent storms, and resurrected dead people! (MARK 1:21–34; 4:35–41; JOHN 11).

The way we see Jesus determines how we relate to Him. If we focus only on His power, we may treat Him with the detached worship we’d give a comic book superhero. Yet, if we overemphasize His kindness, we risk treating Him too casually. The truth is that Jesus is both at once—great enough to deserve our obedience yet humble enough to call us friends.- JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

새로운 목적

재단사 제이콥 데이비스는 문제에 당면했습니다. 1800년대 미국 서부에 골드러시가 한창일 때였는데, 금을 캐는 광부들의 작업바지가 계속 닳아서 해어지는 것이었습니다. 그가 어떻게 해결했을까요? 데이비스는 그 지역에 있는 리바이 스트라우스 소유의 직물공장에서 텐트 천을 구입하여, 이 두껍고 튼튼한 소재로 작업바지를 만들었습니다. 청바지가 탄생하게 된 것입니다. 오늘날 (리바이스를 포함한) 다양한 형태의 청바지들은 세계에서 가장 인기 있는 의류 품목이 되었으며, 이것은 모두 텐트 천을 새로운 목적으로 사용하였기 때문입니다.

시몬과 그의 친구들은 갈릴리 바다에서 고기를 잡는 어부였습니다. 그런데 예수님이 오셔서 그들에게 주님을 따라오라고 부르셨습니다. 주님이 그들에게 새로운 목적을 주신 것입니다. 그들은
이제는 더 이상 고기를 낚는 어부가 아니었습니다. 예수님은 그들에게 “나를 따라오라 내가 너희로 사람을 낚는 어부가 되게 하리라”(마가복음 1:17)고 말씀하셨습니다.

그들의 삶에 세워진 이 새로운 목적을 갖게 된 이 사람들은 예수님께 배우고 훈련을 받아, 예수님이 승천하신 뒤에 그리스도의 십자가와 부활의 메시지로 사람들의 마음을 얻는 일로 하나님께 쓰임 받을 수 있었습니다. 오늘날, 우리는 그리스도의 사랑과 구원의 좋은 소식을 나누며 그들의 발자취를 뒤따라갑니다.

우리의 삶이 다른 사람들의 삶과 목적, 그리고 영원한 운명을 바꿀 수 있는 이 사랑을 전하고 나타낼 수 있기를 바랍니다.

A New Purpose

Jacob Davis was a tailor with a problem. It was the height of the Gold Rush in the 1800s American West and the gold miners’ work pants kept wearing out. His solution? Davis went to a local dry goods company owned by Levi Strauss, purchased tent cloth, and made work pants from that heavy, sturdy material—and blue jeans were born. Today, denim jeans in a variety of forms (including Levi’s) are among the most popular clothing items in the world, and all because tent material was given a new purpose.

Simon and his friends were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee. Then Jesus arrived and called them to follow Him. He gave them a new purpose. No longer would they fish for fish. As Jesus told them, “Come, follow me, . . . and I will send you out to fish for people” (MARK 1:17).

With this new purpose set for their lives, these men were taught and trained by Jesus so that, after His ascension, they could be used by God to capture the hearts of people with the message of the cross and resurrection of Christ. Today, we follow in their steps as we share the good news of Christ’s love and salvation.

May our lives both declare and exhibit this love that can change the lives, purposes, and eternal destinies of others. - BILL CROWDER

표적과 감정

내가 아는 어떤 청년은 하나님께 표적을 구하는 습관이 있습니다. 그것이 나쁘다고 할 수는 없지만 그의 기도는 자신의 감정을 확인해보려는 경향이 있습니다. 예를 들면 그는 다음과 같이 기도합니다. “하나님, 만일 제가 X를 하기 원하시면 Y를 해주세요. 그러면 그렇게 하라시는 걸로 알겠습니다.”

이것 때문에 그가 궁지에 빠졌습니다. 그의 기도하는 방법과 하나님의 응답이라고 생각하는 방법 때문에, 그는 전에 사귀던 여자 친구와 다시 교제해야 한다는 느낌이 들었습니다. 그리 놀라운 일도 아니겠지만, 그녀는 하나님께서 그것을 원하지 않으신다고 굳게 믿고 있었습니다.

예수님 당시의 종교지도자들은 예수님에게 주님의 주장이 타당하다는 것을 증명할 표적을 보여 달라고 요구했습니다 (마태복음 16:1). 그들은 하나님의 인도를 구하지도 않으면서 하나님의 신성한 권위에 도전하고 있었던 것입니다. 예수님은 그들에게 “악하고 음란한 세대가 표적을 구한다”(4절)라고 대답하셨습니다. 주님이 이처럼 강력하게 반응하신 것은 사람들이 하나님의 인도를 구하지 못하도록 막기 위해 포괄적으로 언급하신 것이 아니었습니다. 그보다는, 예수님이 메시아이심을 가리키는 성경에 기록된 분명한 예언들을 무시하는 그들을 꾸짖고 계셨던 것입니다.

하나님은 우리가 기도하는 가운데 그분의 인도하심을 구하기를 원하십니다(야고보서 1:5). 또한 하나님은 성령님(요한복음 14:26)과 하나님의 말씀(시편 119:105)으로 우리를 인도해주십니다. 하나님은 우리에게 스승들과 현명한 지도자들을 주시고, 예수님의 본보기도 우리에게 보여주셨습니다.

하나님께 분명한 길을 묻는 것은 지혜로운 일이지만, 언제나 우리가 원하고 기대하는 방법대로 응답하지 않으실 수 있습니다. 어쩌면 기도의 더 큰 요점은 하나님의 성품에 대해 더 많이 배우고 우리 하나님 아버지와의 관계를 더 발전시키는 일일 것입니다.

Signs and Feelings

A young man I know has a habit of asking God for signs. That’s not necessarily bad, but his prayers tend to seek confirmation of his feelings. For instance, he’ll pray, “God, if You want me to do X, then You please do Y, and I’ll know it’s okay.”

This has created a dilemma. Because of the way he prays and the way he thinks God is answering, he feels that he should get back with his ex-girlfriend. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she feels strongly that God doesn’t want that.

The religious leaders of Jesus’s day demanded a sign from Him to prove the validity of His claims (MATT. 16:1). They weren’t seeking God’s guidance; they were challenging His divine authority. Jesus replied, “A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign” (V. 4). The Lord’s strong response wasn’t a blanket statement to prevent anyone from seeking God’s guidance. Rather, Jesus was accusing them of ignoring the clear prophecies in Scripture that indicated He was the Messiah.

God wants us to seek His guidance in prayer (JAMES 1:5). He also gives us the guidance of the Spirit (JOHN 14:26) and His Word (PS. 119:105). He provides us with mentors and wise leaders. And He’s given us the example of Jesus Himself.

It’s wise to ask God for clear direction, but He may not always give it in ways that we expect or want. Perhaps the larger point of prayer is that we learn more about God’s nature and develop a relationship with our Father. - TIM GUSTAFSON

전혀 몰랐습니다

추운 겨울 저녁에 지역교회의 자원봉사자들이 저소득층 주민들이 살고 있는 아파트 단지에서 음식을 나누어주었습니다. 한 여인이 그 음식을 받고 너무 기뻐했습니다. 자신의 비어 있는 찬장을 봉사자들에게 보여주면서 그들은 바로 그녀의 기도응답이라고 말했습니다.

봉사자들이 교회로 돌아왔을 때 한 여자가 울기 시작했습니다. “그분은 제가 어렸을 때 주일학교 선생님이셨어요. 그분은 매주 주일마다 교회에 오시는데, 우리는 그분이 거의 굶고 계시다는 것을 전혀 몰랐어요!”

이 봉사자들은 분명히 바울이 갈라디아서 6장 2절에서 권면한 것처럼 남의 어려움을 덜어줄 수 있는 방법을 찾으려 애쓰는 사려 깊은 사람들입니다. 그러나 그들은 매 주일마다 보는 이 여인의 어려움을 전혀 알지 못했고, 그녀도 자신의 어려움을 남에게 알리지 않았습니다. 바울이 “모든 이에게 착한 일을 하되 더욱 믿음의 가정들에게 할지니라”(6:10) 라고 말한 것처럼, 이 일은 우리가 우리 주위 사람들에게 좀 더 관심을 가져야 한다는 것을 우리 모두에게 자연스럽게 상기시켜줍니다.

함께 모여 예배를 드리는 사람들은 그리스도의 몸인 교회 안에서 도움을 받지 못하는 사람이 없도록 서로 돕는 특권을 갖고 있습니다. 우리가 서로를 잘 알고 또 보살피게 된다면, 아마도 우리는 “전혀 몰랐습니다”라는 말을 다시 할 필요가 없게 될 것입니다.

남을 돌보는 일만큼 대가를 많이 치루는 일도 없지만, 돌보지 않을 경우 더 많은 대가를 치루게 된다.

We Had No Idea

Volunteers from a local church spent a frigid evening distributing food to people in a low-income apartment complex. One woman who received the food was overjoyed. She showed them her bare cupboard and told them they were an answer to her prayers.

As the volunteers returned to the church, one woman began to cry. “When I was a little girl,” she said, “that lady was my Sunday school teacher. She’s in church every Sunday. We had no idea she was almost starving!”

Clearly, these were caring people who were seeking ways to carry the burdens of others, as Paul suggests in Galatians 6:2. Yet somehow they hadn’t noticed the needs of this woman someone they saw every Sunday—and she hadn’t shared her needs. This can be a gentle reminder for all of us to be more aware of those around us and, as Paul said, to “do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers” (6:10).

People who worship together have the privilege of assisting one another so no one in the body of Christ goes without help. As we get to know each other and care for each other, perhaps we won’t ever have to say, “We had no idea.” - DAVE BRANON
