파도를 다스리는 분

덴마크의 크누트 대왕은 11세기 당시 세상에서 가장 강력한 사람중의 하나였습니다. 전해지는 유명한 일화로, 그는 밀물이 일때 바닷가에 의자를 갖다놓게 하고는, 바다를 향해 “너는 나의 명령에 복종해야 한다. 내가 명하노니, 나의 땅으로 올라와 네 주인의 발이나 옷을 적시지 말라.”고 호령했습니다. 그러나 바닷물은 계속해서 밀려와 왕의 발을 적셨습니다.

이 이야기는 흔히 크누트 대왕의 교만에 초점을 맞춘 듯하나 사실은 겸손에 관한 이야기입니다. 크누트 대왕은 말합니다. “왕의 능력은 아무것도 아니라는 것을 온 세상에 알려라. 하나님만이 하늘과 땅과 바다를 복종시키신다.” 크누트 대왕의 이야기의 초점은 이것입니다. ‘하나님만이 전능하신 유일한 분이시다.’

욥도 같은 것을 발견했습니다. 땅의 기초를 놓으시고(욥기 38:4-7) 아침으로 시작하시고 밤으로 끝내시며(12-13절), 눈을 쌓아두시고 별들을 운행하시는(22,31-33절) 분에 비교하면, 우리는 아주 작은 존재입니다. 파도를 다스리시는 분은 오직 한 분 통치자이시지, 우리가 아닙니다(11절; 마태복음 8:23-27).

크누트 대왕의 이야기는 우리가 스스로 너무 똑똑하고 잘났다는 생각이 들 때 떠올리면 좋습니다. 바닷가에 가서 밀물더러 멈추라고 해보거나 해를 향해 물러나라고 명령해보십시오. 우리는 곧 누가 진정으로 지고하신 분인가를 깨닫게 되고, 그분이 우리를 다스려주시는것에 감사하게 될 것입니다.

Ruler of the Waves

King Canute was one of the most powerful men on earth in the eleventh century. In a now-famous tale, it is said that he ordered his chair to be placed on the shore as the tide was rising. “You are subject to me,” he said to the sea. “I command you, therefore, not to rise on to my land, nor to wet the clothing or limbs of your master.” But the tide continued to rise, drenching the king’s feet.

This story is often told to draw attention to Canute’s pride. Actually, it’s a story about humility. “Let all the world know that the power of kings is empty,” Canute says next, “save Him by whose will heaven, earth and sea obey.” Canute’s story makes a point: God is the only all-powerful One.

Job discovered the same. Compared to the One who laid Earth’s foundations (JOB 38:4–7), who commands morning to appear and night to end (VV. 12–13), who stocks the storehouses of the snow and directs the stars (VV. 22, 31–33), we are small. There is only one Ruler of the waves, and it is not us (V. 11; MATT. 8:23–27).

Canute’s story is good to reenact when we begin feeling too clever or proud about ourselves. Walk to the beach and tell the tide to halt or try commanding the sun to step aside. We’ll soon remember who is really supreme and thank Him for ruling our lives. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

완벽하게 사랑하기

딸에 관한 문제를 함께 나눌 때 그녀의 목소리는 떨리고 있었습니다. 이 엄마는 문제아들을 친구로 사귀는 십대 딸을 염려하여 딸의 핸드폰을 빼앗고 딸이 가는 곳마다 따라다녔습니다. 그들의 관계는 점점 더 악화되고 있었습니다.

내가 그 딸과 대화를 해보니, 아이는 엄마를 진심으로 사랑하고 있으나 과잉보호로 괴로워하고 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그녀는 자유로워지길 바라고 있었습니다.

완벽하지 못한 존재인 우리 모두는 인간관계 때문에 힘들어합니다. 우리가 부모이든 자녀이든, 결혼을 했든 하지 않았든, 적절한 시간에 적절한 말과 행동을 하면서 사랑을 바르게 표현하려고 애를 씁니다. 우리는 평생을 사랑 안에서 자라갑니다.

고린도전서 13장에서 바울 사도는 완전한 사랑이 어떤 것인지를 설명하고 있습니다. 그의 기준은 아주 좋아 보이지만, 그 사랑을 실천하기가 전적으로 불가능해 보이기도 합니다. 하지만 다행히도, 우리의 본보기로 예수님이 계십니다. 주님은 여러 다양한 어려움들과 문제들을 가진 사람들을 만나면서 우리에게 완전한 사랑에 대한 실제 모습을 보여주셨습니다. 우리가 주님과 동행하면서 언제나 주의 사랑 안에 거하고 우리 마음을 주의 말씀으로 채울 때, 우리는 점점 더 주님을 닮은 모습을 나타내게 될 것입니다. 우리는 여전히 실수하지만, 하나님은 그 실수들을 회복하셔서 모든 상황에서 선을 이끌어내실 수있습니다. 하나님의 사랑은 “모든 것을 덮어주며” “결코 없어지지 않기” 때문입니다(7-8절).

Loving Perfectly

Her voice shook as she shared the problems she was having with her daughter. Worried about her teenager’s questionable friends, this concerned mum confiscated her daughter’s mobile phone and chaperoned her everywhere. Their relationship seemed only to go from bad to worse.

When I spoke with the daughter, I discovered that she loves her mum dearly but is suffocating under a smothering love. She longs to break free.

As imperfect beings, we all struggle in our relationships. Whether we are a parent or child, single or married, we grapple with expressing love the right way, saying and doing the right thing at the right time. We grow in love throughout our lifetime. In 1 Corinthians 13 the apostle Paul outlines what perfect love looks like. His standard sounds wonderful, but putting that love into practice can be absolutely daunting. Thankfully, we have Jesus as our example. As He interacted with people with varying needs and issues, He showed us what perfect love looks like in action. As we walk with Him, keeping ourselves in His love and steeping our mind in His Word, we’ll reflect more and more of His likeness. We’ll still make mistakes, but God is able to redeem them and cause good to come out of every situation, for His love “always protects” and it “never fails” (VV. 7–8). - POH FANG CHIA

다섯 나라에서 온 가족들과 함께 기억에 남을 만한 저녁 식사를 했습니다. 그날의 대화는 여럿으로 나뉘지 않고, 모두가 다른 출신 지역의 관점에서 런던에서 사는 것에 대한 이야기만 나누었습니다. 그날 밤 남편과 나는 저녁 초대를 통해 새롭게 우정을 다지고 또 다른 문화를 배우면서 경험하게 된 따뜻한 마음 등, 우리가 베푼 것보다 훨씬 많은 것을 받았다고 생각하였습니다.

히브리서의 저자는 공동체 생활에 관한 몇 가지 권고로 글을 마치는데, 거기엔 낯선 사람을 언제나 환영해야 한다는 말도 포함되어 있습니다. 왜냐하면 그렇게 할 때에 “어떤 이들은 자기들도 모르는 사이에 천사들을 대접”(13:2) 하였기 때문입니다. 그는 아마도 창세기 18:1-12에서 보는 것처럼 구약시대의 관습을 따라 세 명의 낯선 이들을 친절히 맞아 음식을 대접했던 아브라함과 사라를 언급하는 것인지도 모르겠습니다. 그들은 그들이 대접하고 있는 이들이 축복의 메시지를 들고 온 천사들인 줄 알지 못했습니다.

The Gift of Welcome

The dinner where we hosted families from five nations remains a wonderful memory. Somehow the conversation didn’t splinter into twos, but we all contributed to a discussion of life in London from the viewpoints of different parts of the world. At the end of the evening, my husband and I reflected that we had received more than we gave, including the warm feelings we experienced in fostering new friendships and learning about different cultures.

The writer of the book of Hebrews concluded his thoughts with some exhortations for community life, including that his readers should continue to welcome strangers. For in doing so, “some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it” (13:2). He may have been referring to Abraham and Sarah, who as we see in Genesis 18:1–12 welcomed three strangers, reaching out to them with generosity and treating them to a feast, as was the custom in biblical times. They didn’t know that they were entertaining angels who brought them a message of blessing.

We don’t ask people into our homes in the hope of gaining from them, but often we receive more than we give. May the Lord spread His love through us as we reach out with His

사랑과 오래 신은 신발

아내와 나는 가끔씩 서로의 말을 끝내 줍니다. 결혼하여 30년 넘게 함께 살면서 서로가 생각하고 말하는 것에 대해 아주 익숙해져 있기 때문에, 우리는 말을 끝까지 다 할 필요가 없을 정도로 말 한마디, 표정 하나로도 의사소통이 충분합니다.

여기에는 꼭 맞아서 오래도록 즐겨 신은 신발과 같은 편안함이 있습니다. 때때로 우리는 실제로 서로를 ‘나의 오래 신은 신발’이라고 다정하게 부르기도 합니다. 이런 칭찬의 표현이 우리를 잘 모르는 사람들에게는 이해하기 어려울수도 있겠지요! 오랜 세월 같이 사는 동안 수십 년간 사랑과 신뢰의 결과로 생긴 표현방법들로 서로만이 통하는 언어가 만들어진 것입니다.

하나님이 아주 친밀하게 우리를 사랑하신다는 것을 알면 큰 위로가 됩니다. 다윗은 “여호와여 내 혀의 말을 알지 못하시는 것이 하나도 없으시니이다”(시편 139:4)라고 기록했습니다. 당신이 마음 깊이 생각하고 있는 것을 예수님과 조용하게 나눈다고 상상해보십시오. 힘들게 겨우 말을 꺼내려고 할 때, 예수님은 모든 것을 아신다는 듯 미소로 당신이 제대로 할 수 없었던 말들을 대신 정확히 표현해주실 것입니다. 하나님과 대화할 때 완벽하게 말하지 못해도 괜찮다고 하니 얼마나 다행인지요! 하나님은 우리를 사랑하시고 너무나 잘 아셔서 충분히 이해하십니다.

Of Love and Old Shoes

Sometimes my wife and I finish each other’s sentences. In over thirty years of marriage we’ve become increasingly familiar with the way the other thinks and speaks. We may not even have to finish a sentence at all; just a word or a glance is enough to express a thought.

There’s comfort in that like an old pair of shoes you continue to wear because they fit so well. Sometimes we even refer to each other affectionately as “my old shoe”—a compliment that might be difficult to understand if you didn’t know us well! Through the years our relationship has developed a language of its own, with expressions that are the result of decades of love and trust.

It’s comforting to know that God loves us with a deep familiarity. David wrote, “Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely” (PS. 139:4). Imagine having a quiet conversation with Jesus where you’re telling Him the deepest matters of your heart. Just when you’re struggling to get the words out, He gives you a knowing smile and expresses exactly what you couldn’t quite say. How good it is to know that we don’t have to get our words just right to talk to God! He loves us and knows us well enough to understand. - JAMES BANKS

두 개의 초상화

한 할머니가 교회 현관 앞에서 두 개의 사진액자를 손에 들고 친구들에게 자랑스럽게 보여주고 있었습니다. 첫 번째 사진은 그녀의 딸이 고국 부룬디에서 찍은 것이었고, 두 번째 사진은 최근에 그 딸에게서 태어난 손자의 사진이었습니다. 그러나 그 딸은 갓 태어난 아기의 사진에 없었습니다. 딸은 아기를 낳다가 죽은 것입니다.

한 친구가 다가와 그 사진들을 바라 보다가 반사적으로 손을 들어 그 할머니의 얼굴을 감쌌습니다. 그 친구는 눈물을 글썽이며 “말 안 해도 알아.”라는 말밖에 해줄 수가 없었습니다.

그 친구는 정말로 알고 있었습니다. 두달 전 자기 아들을 땅에 묻은 엄마였으니까요.

우리가 겪는 고통을 똑같이 경험했던 사람들이 우리에게 주는 위로에는 특별한 것이 있습니다. 그들은 알기 때문입니다. 체포되기 직전에 예수님은 제자들에게 “너희는 곡하고 애통하겠으나 세상은 기뻐하리라”라고 경고하셨습니다. 그러나 바로 이어서, “너희는 근심하겠으나 너희 근심이 도리어 기쁨이 되리라”(요한복음 16:20)고 그들을 위로하셨습니다. 몇 시간만 지나면 제자들은 예수님이 체포되어 십자가형을 받는 것을 보고 절망하게 될 것입니다. 그러나 부활하신 예수님을 다시 보았을 때, 그들의 처절했던 슬픔은 상상할 수 없었던 기쁨으로 바뀌었습니다.

이사야 선지자는 메시아에 대해 “그는 실로 우리의 질고를 지고 우리의 슬픔을 당하였다”(이사야 53:4)고 예언하였습니다. 우리 구주는 우리의 고통을 그냥 알고만 계시지 않고, 그 고통을 직접 체험하셨습니다. 주님은 아시고 돌보아주십니다. 때가 되면 우리의 슬픔은 기쁨으로 바뀌게 될 것입니다.

Two Portraits

Clutching two framed photographs, the proud grandmother showed them to friends in the church foyer. The first picture was of her daughter back in her homeland of Burundi. The second was of her grandson, born recently to that daughter. But the daughter wasn’t holding her newborn. She had died giving birth to him.

A friend approached and looked at the pictures. Reflexively, she reached up and held that dear grandmother’s face in her hands. All she could say through her own tears was, “I know. I know.”

And she did know. Two months earlier she had buried a son.

There’s something special about the comfort of others who have experienced our pain. They know. Just before Jesus’s arrest, He warned His disciples, “You will weep and mourn while the world rejoices.” But in the next breath He comforted them: “You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy” (JOHN 16:20). In mere hours, the disciples would be devastated by Jesus’s arrest and crucifixion. But their crushing grief soon turned to a joy they could not have imagined when they saw Him alive again.

Isaiah prophesied of the Messiah, “Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering” (ISA. 53:4). We have a Savior who doesn’t merely know about our pain; He lived it. He knows. He cares. One day our grief will be turned into joy. - TIM GUSTAFSON

Lord, thank You for going to the cross for us. We certainly know trouble in this world, but You overcame the world and took our sin and pain for us. We look forward to the day when our sorrows will be turned into joy and we see You face to face.

When we put our cares into His hands, He puts His peace into our hearts.

우리와 같은 사람

많은 사람의 사랑을 받았던 연재만화 ‘피너츠’의 작가 찰스 슐츠 (1922-2000)의 추모식에서 그의 친구이자 동료 만화가인 캐시 구스와이트는 그가 보여준 인성과 연민에 대해 이렇게 말했습니다. “그는 우리 모두의 감정을 아주 잘 아는 만화 등장인물들을 세상 모든 사람들에게 보여주어 우리가 결코 혼자가 아니라는 느낌이 들게 해주었습니다. 거기에다 만화가인 자신도 함께 내어줌으로써 우리가 결코 혼자가 아니라는 것을 알게 해주었습니다...... 그는 우리를 격려해주고, 우리 마음을 위로해주었으며, 우리가 그도 우리와 똑같다고 느끼게 해주었습니다.”

우리를 이해하고 도울 수 있는 사람이 아무도 없다고 느껴질 때, 예수님은 그분이 자신을 우리에게 내어주시고, 우리가 누구 이며 지금 어떤 상황에 있는지를 정확하게 알고 계신 분이라는 것을 상기시켜 주십니다.

히브리서 2:9-18은 예수님이 그분의 공생애 기간 동안 우리와 완전히 인성이 같으셨다는 놀라운 사실을 보여줍니다(14절). 주님은 “모든 사람을 위하여 죽음을 맛보시고”(9절), 마귀의 권세를 멸하시며 (14절), “죽기를 무서워하므로 한평생 매여 종노릇하는 모든 자들을 놓아주셨습니다”(15절). 예수님은 범사에 우리처럼 되셨는데, “이는 하나님의 일에 자비하고 충성된 대제사장이 되어 백성의 죄를 속량하시기”(17절) 위해서였습니다. ‘주님, 주님께서 우리와 인성을 같이 해주심으로 우리가 오늘 주님의 도우심을 알고 영원히 주님의 임재 안에서 살 수 있게 해주시니 감사합니다.’

One of Us

At the memorial service for Charles Schulz (1922–2000), creator of the beloved Peanuts comic strip, friend and fellow cartoonist Cathy Guisewite spoke of his humanity and compassion. “He gave everyone in the world characters who knew exactly how all of us felt, who made us feel we were never alone. And then he gave the cartoonist himself, and he made us feel that we were never alone. . . . He encouraged us. He commiserated with us. He made us feel he was exactly like us.”

When we feel that no one understands or can help us, we are reminded that Jesus gave us Himself, and He knows exactly who we are and what we are facing today.

Hebrews 2:9–18 presents the remarkable truth that Jesus fully shared our humanity during His life on earth (V. 14). He “taste[d] death for everyone” (V. 9), broke the power of Satan (V. 14), and freed “those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death” (V. 15). Jesus was made like us, “fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God” (V. 17). Thank You, Lord, for sharing our humanity so that we might know Your help today and live in Your presence forever. - DAVID MCCASLAND

젊은 시절 아이작 와츠는 그의 교회에서 부르는 음악들이 애석하게도 무언가 부족하다는 것을 느꼈습니다. 그러자 그의 아버지는 그에게 좀 더 나은 음악을 한번 만들어보라고 권했습니다. 그가 지은 찬송가 “주 달려 죽은 십자가”는 영어로 된 최고의 찬송가라고 일컬어졌고, 많은 다른 언어로 번역되었습니다.

와츠의 경건한 3절 가사는 우리를 십자가에 달리신 예수님께로 안내해줍니다.

와츠가 섬세하게 묘사하고 있는 이 십자가 사건은 역사상 가장 참혹한 순간으로 남아 있습니다. 우리도 잠시 십자가 곁에 있는 사람들과 함께 서 있어 봅시다. 하나님의 아들이 그의 몸을 꿰뚫은 거친 못에 달려 힘겹게 숨 쉬고 있습니다. 처절한 고통의 몇 시간이 지난 후, 알 수 없는 짙은 어둠이 세상에 드리우고, 마침내 우주를 주관하시는 하나님께서 자비롭게 그분의 고통스러운 영혼을 거두어가십니다. 그 순간 지진으로 땅이 흔들리고, 예루살렘에 있는 성전의 두꺼운 휘장이 반으로 찢어집니다. 무덤이 열리고 죽었던 몸들이 부활하여 그 성을 걸어 다닙니다(마태복음 27:51-53). 예수님을 십자가에 못 박은 백부장은 이런 일들을 보고 “이는 진실로 하나님의 아들이었도다”(54절)라고 고백하게 됩니다.

미국 시인협회는 와츠의 시를 평가하면서, “십자가는 모든 가치에 새로운 질서를 부여하고, 모든 헛된 것들을 물리친다.”라고 말합니다. 이 찬송가는 이렇게 끝을 맺습니다. “놀라운 사랑 받은 나, 몸으로 제물 삼겠네.”

All of Me

Young Isaac Watts found the music in his church sadly lacking, and his father challenged him to create something better. Isaac did. His hymn “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” has been called the greatest in the English language and has been translated into many other languages.

Watts’s worshipful third verse ushers us into the presence of Christ at the crucifixion.

See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

The crucifixion Watts describes so elegantly stands as history’s most awful moment. We do well to pause and stand with those around the cross. The Son of God strains for breath, held by crude spikes driven through His flesh. After tortured hours, a supernatural darkness descends. Finally, mercifully, the Lord of the universe dismisses His anguished spirit. An earthquake rattles the landscape. Back in the city the thick temple curtain rips in half. Graves open, and dead bodies resurrect, walking about the city (MATT. 27:51–53). These events compel the centurion who crucified Jesus to say, “Surely he was the Son of God!” (V. 54).

“The Cross reorders all values and cancels all vanities,” says the Poetry Foundation in commenting on Watts’s poem. The song could only conclude: “Love so amazing, so divine demands my soul, my life, my all.” - TIM GUSTAFSON

어둠 속에서의 웃음

워싱턴포스트지에 “과학기술 거인들의 최신 프로젝트: 죽음에의 도전”이라는 제목의 기사가 실렸습니다. 그것은 차 아리아나라는 기자가 피터 틸레와 몇몇의 과학기술 거물들의 인간의 수명을 무한정 늘리려는 노력에 관해 쓴 것입니다. 그 프로젝트 수행을 위해 이미 수십억 불이 준비되어 있습니다.

하지만 그들의 계획은 조금 늦었습니다. 죽음은 이미 패배했기 때문입니다! 예수님은 “나는 부활이요 생명이니 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살겠고 무릇 살아서 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 죽지 아니하리니”(요한복음
11:25-26)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님은 우리에게 주님을 믿는 자는 결코, 절대, 어떤 상황에서도 죽지 않는다고 확신시켜 줍니다.

우리의 몸은 분명히 죽습니다. 그 사실을 바꾸기 위해 우리가 할 수 있는 일은 아무것도 없습니다. 그렇지만 우리가 “나를, 나 스스로가, 내가”라고 부르는, 우리의 생각하고 추론하고 기억하고 사랑하고 모험하는 부분들은 결코, 절대 죽지 않을 것입니다.

그리고 무엇보다 좋은 것은, 그것이 선물이라는 것입니다! 우리는 오직 예수님이 주시는 구원을 받아들이기만 하면 됩니다. 씨 에스 루이스는 그것을 깊이 생각하며, 그것은 단순한 것이 해답이라는 의미로 “어둠 속에서의 웃음”과 같은 것이라고 묘사합니다.

어떤 이들은 “그건 너무 쉽잖아요.”라고 말합니다. 글쎄요, 만일 하나님이 당신이 태어나기도 전부터 당신을 사랑하고 그분과 함께 영원히 살기를 원하신다면, 왜 하나님이 그것을 어렵게 만드시겠습니까?

A Chuckle in the Darkness

In a Washington Post article titled “Tech Titans’ Latest Project: Defy Death,” Ariana Cha wrote about the efforts of Peter Thiele and other tech moguls to extend human life indefinitely. They're prepared to spend billions on the project.

They are a little late. Death has already been defeated! Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die” (JOHN 11:25–26). Jesus assures us that those who put their trust in Him will never, ever, under any circumstances whatever, die.

To be clear, our bodies will die—and there is nothing anyone can do to change that. But the thinking, reasoning, remembering, loving, adventuring part of us that we call “me, myself, and I” will never, ever die.

And here’s the best part: It’s a gift! All you have to do is receive the salvation Jesus offers. C. S. Lewis, musing on this notion, describes it as something like “a chuckle in the darkness”— the sense that something that simple is the answer.

안 보이게 하는 반지

그리스 철학자 플라톤(대략 기원전 427-348)은 사람 마음의 어두운 면에 빛을 비출 수 있는, 상상력이 풍부한 한 가지 방법을 생각해냈습니다. 그는 깊은 땅 밑에 묻혔던 금반지를 우연히 발견하게 된 한 목자의 이야기를 합니다. 어느 날 커다란 지진으로 고대 산지대의 무덤이 열리고 목자가 반지를 발견하게 됩니다. 그리고 그 반지는 끼는 사람이 원하면 안 보이도록 하는 마술적인 능력이 있음을 우연히 알게 됩니다. 보이지 않게 되는 것에 대해 생각해보면서 플라톤은 이런 질문을 제기했습니다. ‘만일 사람들이 잡히고 벌 받는 것을 걱정하지 않게 된다면, 과연 나쁜 짓을 안 하려 들까?’

요한복음에서는 예수님이 이에 대해 다르게 말씀하신 것을 봅니다. 선한 목자로 알려진 예수님은 마음이 그 하는 일을 숨기려고 어두움 아래 머물러있다고 말씀하십니다(요한복음 3:19-20). 주님은 우리를 정죄하기 위해 우리의 감추려는 열망에 관심을 두시는 것이 아니라, 주님을 통해 우리에게 구원을 주시는데 관심이 있으십니다(17절). 우리 마음의 목자로서 주님은 최악의 인간 본성을 빛으로 가져와 하나님이 우리를 얼마나 사랑하시는지를 보여주십니다(16절).

하나님은 그분의 자비로 우리를 어둠에서 불러내어 빛 가운데서 주님을 따르도록 초대하십니다.

Ring of Invisibility

The Greek philosopher Plato (c. 427–c. 348 bc) found an imaginative way of shining light on the dark side of the human heart. He told the story of a shepherd who innocently discovered a golden ring that had been hidden deep in the earth. One day a great earthquake opened up an ancient mountainside tomb and revealed the ring to the shepherd. By accident he also discovered that the ring had the magical ability to enable the wearer to become invisible at will. Thinking about invisibility, Plato raised this question: If people didn’t have to worry about being caught and punished, would they resist doing wrong?

In John’s gospel we find Jesus taking this idea in a different direction. There, Jesus, known as the Good Shepherd, speaks of hearts that stay in the cover of darkness to hide what they are doing (JOHN 3:19–20). He isn’t calling attention to our desire for cover-up to condemn us, but to offer us salvation through Him (V. 17). As the Shepherd of our hearts, He brings the worst of our human nature to light to show us how much God loves us (V. 16).

God in His mercy calls us out of our darkness and invites us to follow Him in the light. MART DEHAAN

완전한 출입권

몇 년 전에 친구가 프로골프 경기를 보러 가는데 나를 함께 초대해주었습니다. 처음으로 가보는 거라 나는 어떤 경험을 하게 될 지 전혀 알지 못했습니다. 그곳에 도착하여 선물과 경기에 관한 정보, 그리고 골프코스 지도를 받고 좀 놀라긴 했지만, 무엇보다 놀라웠던 것은 18번 그린 뒤의 VIP 텐트 출입권이 우리에게 주어진 것이었습니다. 그 안에는 무료 음식이 있었고 앉아 쉴 수도 있습니다. 나 혼자서로는 후히 대접해주는 그 텐트에 들어갈 수 없었을 것입니다. 그것은 오로지 내 친구 때문이었고, 그 친구를 통해서만 내가 온전히 출입할 수 있었던 것입니다.

우리만 남겨진 채로 있었다면 우리는 절망적으로 하나님으로부터 분리되어버렸을 것입니다. 그러나 예수님이 우리의 죄 값을 지시고 주님의 생명을 우리에게 주심으로 우리는 하나님께 다가갈 수 있게 되었습니다. 바울 사도는 “이제 교회로 말미암아......하나님의 각종 지혜를 알게 하려 하심이니”(에베소서 3:10)라고 썼습니다. 이 지혜는 우리에게 하나님 아버지께로 갈 수 있는 길을 만들어주신 그리스도 안에서 유대인과 이방인들을 하나 되게 해주었습니다. “우리가 그 안에서 그를 믿음으로 말미암아 담대함과 확신을 가지고 하나님께 나아감을 얻느니라”(12절).

우리가 예수님을 믿으면 우리는 가장 좋은 출입증을 받습니다. 그것은 우리를 사랑하시고 우리와 관계를 맺기 원하시는 하나님께 접근할 수 있는 출입증입니다.

Complete Access

A few years ago, a friend invited me to join him as a spectator at a pro golf tournament. Being a first-timer, I had no idea what to expect. When we arrived, I was surprised to receive gifts, information, and maps of the golf course. But what topped it all was that we gained access to a VIP tent behind the 18th green, where we had free food and a place to sit. I couldn’t have gained entry to the hospitality tent on my own though. The key was my friend; it was only through him that I had complete access.

Left to ourselves, we would all be hopelessly separated from God. But Jesus, who took our penalty, offers us His life and access to God. The apostle Paul wrote, “[God’s] intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known” (EPH. 3:10). This wisdom has brought Jew and Gentile together in Christ, who has made a way for us to come to God the Father. “Through faith in [Christ] we may approach God with freedom and confidence” (V. 12).

When we put our trust in Jesus, we receive the greatest access of all—access to the God who loves us and desires relationship with us. - BILL CROWDER
